so this post might be pointless, and not to have yet another malconaire family thread running, but i was responding to aoife's comment <3 and i realized there's a lot i don't know about the girls' parents and i'd love to hash that out w you guys, if lizzy doesn't already know? @thelongforgottenrealm

ok so first id love to establish first names for our love birds? [ this site ] might help w that ;D next, id like to discuss a lil their timeline as well as the broader timeline re: valentina and her kids coming onto the scene etc, bc, for example, the thing tht actually spurred this comment was me realizing i have no idea if rosie remembers her mom at all!

speaking of, rosie's bio says she doesn't remember much abt when they were wealthy, so we know that she was still pr small when valentina arrived on the scene, and from that im guessing their mama died pr early into in her life but im not sure how long lord m was a widower -- was it decades? years? months? esp since the remarriage we now know was politically motivated it really could've been any timeframe at all since it wasnt him moving on, etc

but anway! yeah basically just a few basics would be great <3

so yeah to get us started imma start w what we know (using the first event as year 1 since im not sure what the years supposed to be plus lbr roderick's probs did smth stupidly dramatic like re-starting the calendar w year 1, day 1 being his coronation day etc smdh so who even knows whats going on)

year 1 -- birth of valentina (as a result of this being the first known malconaire event, this whole calendar is a timetable of valentina's ages when everything went down which is pr interesting for me as her rper heehee)

year 18 -- birth of cassimir

year 22 -- births of sonya, cillian

year 23 -- birth of eithne/presumably lord and lady m were married by this time, if not before?

year 25 -- birth of brigit

year 26 -- birth of saoirse

year 27 -- birth of aoife

year 29 -- birth of roisin/last known year in which lady m was def alive

year 48 -- surrender of astaira to roderick/battle of m may or may not have already taken place but obv would've been before the formal capitulation -- im guessing it was the same year tho since the v next battle led to the surrender, but anyway likely this is the year in which lord m died, and certainly he was dead by this time

year 50 -- the present

so some notes!! i believe @forgottencassimir said...somewhere haha that cassimir was probs abt ~teenage when valentina married lord m, so that puts the marriage likely between years 31-37, and we know that rosie hardly remembers their wealth at its full height, as well as the fact that valentina was the direct cause of its loss, so she was probs 6-8 when that happened, so that puts their marriage between years 35-37ish, most likely (also never fully appreciated the age gap between rosie and cassimir till i started really thinkin abt this alksdjfaklsdfj), so we're safe to say, i think, that lady m was def dead by year 37 also, i don't want to assume anything, but i do think we're pr safe to say that the battle of m took place in the year 48 and, therefore, that lord m died in year 48

this means that the smallest amount of time lord m spent without the woman he loved was 11 years SOB, and it ALSO means that at the smallest range valentina and he were married that long, and that its been at LEAST 13 years since the marriage of lord m and valentina and thus their kids have been siblings all that time/she's been their stepmom that long etc, but possibly for even longer!

are there any major events whose timetable we know that im forgetting? i feel like there are hahah but im drawing a blank

OK so I know it's been FOREVER since we talked BUT I have been watching a stream of someone playing FFXIV from the beginning and then I was also talking to a friend about the story of FFXIV and I thought of you.

I know if I get into FFXIV it will eat my life (and sometimes I consider it) but if I do, how should I start?

Also, what are the best parts of the story and/or gameplay?

(also Aoife is cool, I like her a lot, and I've just been casually following you long enough that she's like... my default WOL, just so you know)

anyway this ended up very long so im putting it under a readmore, but aaaaa im so happy you're interested in trying the game!!

ffxiv will absolutely eat your life, but! if you're interested in giving it a try to see if you like it, (deep breath) have you heard about the free trial of the award winning mmo final fantasy fourteen with no restrictions on playtime and content up to level 70 including the heavensward and stormblood expansio--

jokes aside, the free trial is my personal rec for where to start. you can play as most of the available races (viera and hrothgar are locked to shadowbringers unforch, but as part of the story you get an item that you can use to remake your character if you want, so if you decide to buy the game later you can use that to make the bunny or lion of ur dreams). there are some limits on things like buying items off the mb and how much gil/items you can have, but for the most part there's like 200+ hours of content that's just available for FREE. Idk if you have mmo experience, but if xiv would be your first foray into MMOs i would definitely try the trial first to see if you like it! and since stormblood is included in the trial now you can meet my favorite robot beetle without paying a CENT

the other thing to consider is that there is a big expansion coming at the end of June, which will also include a gigantic graphical update for the characters and world. right now the game is doing its best with ps3-early ps4 era graphics, but come june everything will look a lot prettier! (not that it isn't already pretty, but i won't miss the pixelated grass...). They'll also be adding furry lion ladies if that's your thing (though they won't be free to play as; you'll have to buy the full game to make a hot lion). the downside is the new expansion will be a tough time to start with everyone trying to get in for the new story, so I'd say if you want to start, either do it before dawntrail (easy to log in) or end of july (login queues have eased, and you get to see everything in the pretty graphics!)

normally here is where I'd put my "if you want to play around with the character creator, there's a free benchmark program you can download that includes it!" buuuut the dawntrail benchmark has uh, let's just say wip character models, and they're actually working on putting out an update to it sometime in the next couple weeks.... but when that update does come out, it'll be a great way to play around and see what kind of character you want your wol to be!

WHEW. Okay. that's the first part of your question.

Second part of your question - i wont discuss details of the story bc imo it's worth experiencing firsthand, but i think my favorite part about the story is that your little guy is at the center of it. a lot of the wol's narrative is left open to interpretation, and you are free to imagine how your character responds to the plot. every single person who plays this game has a different and valid experience with the same story, simply due to how they envision their character participating in it, and i think that's beautiful. i can't think of a lot else like it out there.

you'll see a lot of people online arguing that some expansions are "skippable" or base game is "skippable" but they're all lying to you. play all the main story. watch all the cutscenes. there's no need to zoom through it. the reason you are crying your eyes out at the end of endwalker is because you have watched your wol grow from the time they were killing level 1 ladybugs in the starting area. some parts might be stronger or weaker than others, but it all comes together to make one of my favorite stories videogames has ever told.

(also, no spoilers, but shadowbringers is still my favorite expansion for a reason. you've probably osmosized a fair bit of it from my posts about it but it's soooo good. it's worth seeing in person.)

also there are some surprisingly good storylines in the "side" content (raids, trials, etc), so it's definitely worth picking up those blue plus quests and seeing what adventures are to be had. not to be biased but the omega storyline is my favorite ("yes ren we KNOW you like the robot beetle"). some are serious (there's one about child soldiers) and some are goofy (in one questline you solve zany mysteries with the world's least competent detective) but all of them have heart, and a little final fantasy corniness.

as for gameplay, its probably obvious that i love the fashion aspect. Gear you obtain can be seen on your character (even jewelry!), and there's a whole system for saving outfits. people joke that glamour is the true endgame but i literally, like an hour ago, cleared a high difficulty raid because i wanted a specific shirt. So obviously the dressup aspect is a main draw for me gameplay wise.

but other than that, one of the game's strengths is there's something for everyone. if you want to be the sweatiest raider and optimize your rotation and get BiS and clear ultimates, you can, but it's not the only way to enjoy the game. i have friends who enjoy just dinking around in roulettes, friends who love to fish, friends who roleplay, friends who organize rare monster kill trains, and friends who spend a ton of time on minigames in the casino. that's just scratching the surface. there's so much to do!

ahhhhh please do not ever apologize for bringing this up TRULY it means so much to me!!!

i have never set foot in ireland or anywhere in the uk and i had also never like. studied irish history or the history of the troubles at all aside from just like. hearing a bit about it before i decided to write ni marlene for this fic so!! i was trying very very hard to get it Right.

and like the thing is...yeah because i knew my knowledge on the subject was gonna be limited i wasn't really trying to make like. huge sweeping statements about taking One Side Or The Other. although i will say in trying to show the "both sides"/multiple perspectives it was like. within ireland. like in a conflict that traces back to colonizer vs. colonized i am....not ever going to be very interested in the perspective/side of the colonizer lol. what i wanted to focus on was what was going on in northern ireland at the time and the various responses from the people around marlene, from lee who very much believes that violence is necessary to aoife who thinks lee isn't giving adequate consideration to the weight of that violence to marlene who is sort of floating in the middle not really sure what to think. because yeah at the end of the day we can look back at history and try to pick Which Side Was Right but like. war and any kind of violent conflict are so much more nuanced than that and trying to boil it down to a clear right side/wrong side pretty much always feels reductive to me.

like i think there's this tendency especially with history to try and zoom out and look at violence through the lens of these very abstract concepts or talk about war in terms of nations the way you'd talk about two sports teams but. i am much more interested in zooming in and looking at conflict on the level of individual humans and the impact it has on us as people.

favourite time of the year: fall!!! since ive always lived in the desert theres pretty much two weeks during the fall that are actually pleasant weather to be outside in and thats it

comfort foods: dark chocolate or lemon desserts!! i love baking and like to try making a lot of different things but chocolate and citrus are always my faves. i also love sweet potatoes and homemade chicken soup :)

do you collect something: LOTS OF THINGS LOL…. i like to get fun calendars so i keep my past ones, my eyes are sensitive so i always wear sunglasses and ive been expanding my collection, i like to collect pins and buttons, i collect pinapple and lemon print things, since i started wearing earrings regularly again ive really gotten a good collection of fun ones, and most importantly i have a HUGEEEE stuffed animal collection. at my old house my parents had a bunk bed in my room for no reason so i stored them all up there and they were overflowing. now idk where im going to put them when i move out but i just cant bring myself to get rid of any theyre all my babies <3333

Ok 1 LOVE THE FIC!!! 2 my taming 7 review:

it was good, I loved it and I pretty much always will. Lowkey felt like they were side characters in their own story. It lowkey got spoilt for me the ending but still wouldn’t really suspect it until a certain point. Love the two characters they have my heart🫶🏻 I FUCKING HATE LIZZIE😡 opinion might change when I get to her book but I highly doubt it like just coz you’re greiving don’t mean you can bully others. Love seeing the lynch family happy. They lowkey need another book, or get heavily mentioned in the next because there was no tention/ build up for Claire and gibs but the first 250 pages were background information that I feel with everyone’s new lives were worth it. However with it being 550 pages I feel like another 200 would be worth for a slow burn for them two. With it being the shortest it took me the longest to read

okay so i’m like 100 pages from the end but i so get what u mean abt it seeming more like they’re side characters bc it all seemed so rushed and jumpy? nothing really seemed well detailed or anything like not their relationship or what gibsie was going through idk the whole thing seemed like it was just a bit of a filler ready for hugh and lizzie’s book which is so frustrating bc claire and gibsie also deserved a detailed 800 page book😡😡but im still loving it and them i just wish more time and care had been taken and we’d been given more :(( imo hugh and lizzie could have waited. i have mixed feelings abt lizzie tho bc she was so awful in this book but i get what she was going through/where she was coming from even tho it doesn’t excuse her behaviour but im hoping we finally get to see her heal. icl my favourite parts of the book were the glimpses of the lynch family but more specifically joey (+aoife) bc🤭🤭he’s my man! him as the joker??? yes fucking please. omg and also ollie calling daddy k his dad???? and no one correcting him??? babies are all healing and i’m so happy!!! overall i’m really enjoying the book but it’s not my favourite in the series and i don’t think it should have been released just yet bc i think it needed a little bit more adding

OH HI HELLO OK THANK YOU ANON FOR ENABLING TO TALK AT LENGTH ABOUT MY OCS HEHE

so the story starts when camila (he/she) and matthew (he/him) are. created I guess? basically their main deal is that theyre human-adjacent. I say often that theyre basically anomalies within the universe that Should Not exist. theyre also perpetually a certain age (I think like 24ish) and always have been which leads to! existential crises as you do

but the universe can cope with two of these anomalies existing separately right? its only when they meet that the Problems and Horrors begin

basically when they meet theyre obviously strangers but essentially they end up dying together on a beach. it becomes strange after that when they are revived and eventually meet again. and when they die again after that. and again. you wont believe what happens next

so every time they die, matthew reappears somewhere random across the world and can Somehow end up coming back to camila who is (understandably) pretty annoyed that he doesnt have any means of knowing where matthew is. like the argument gets resolved but the lack of control is a pretty big point of contention. camila does sometimes get conversations with this like. entity that calls itself the universe but neither I or camila know if it's being facetious. im not sure what their deal is tbh. anyway yeah she sometimes gets to talk to them while being dead but theyre kind of a dick and it doesnt really help anyone but is somewhat useful in somewhat giving him an explanation. idk I kinda like nebulous and enigmatic characters (mainly bc I added them on impulse and idk really why) who are also just generally not fun to be around. hits it with a big cartoon hammer. anyway yeah that maybe evens it out a bit?

also sometimes when they die and are revived they (mainly matthew) get some sort of mutation like matthew is vaguely a vampire and also sometimes has 3 eyes depending on how I want to draw/picture him. camila also gets pigeon wings (specifically quite pale grey pigeon wings). he also one time woke up with idk just. free top surgery happened and theyre both like woahhhh holy shit this is epic

anyway it at some point becomes discovered that it's the act of them being together that causes the loop of dying and revival to happen bc like. their aforementioned anomalous status in the universe is ok on their own but impossible and overall Bad when they're together so the universe responds by. repeatedly killing them. this is confirmed to their great reluctance when they try to deliberately stay apart after they die one time and they just... dont die...

but by this point theyre like. very close (theyre queerplatonic and t4t and desperately in love. you know how it is) so they! decide theyd rather be stuck in this loop

ALSO at some point they end up working at this haunted house in the middle of the countryside with my other characters aoife and lauren (both she/her) who I! can very much talk about also if you want hehe

overall id say the main themes I wanna convey in the story (ive written a bunch of prose about them hehe but no like. concrete chronological story really) are 1. agency and 2. love as a choice and soulmates as a decision.

For Aoife, DRK 30-70 all happens during Stormblood, while she is on break from being the WoL. Her 'excuse' for picking up a tank job is wanting to take up Haurchefant's torch, but she also just. needed a way to process her grief, and Fray ended up being that for her.

Aoife didn't really vibe with Fray at first, and found their personality and outlook grating (she's never tired of being nice and doesn't want to go apeshit). As the early quests progressed, she started recognizing that some of Fray's advice rang true - she had had thoughts like that at one point or another, but kept them buried out of embarrassment or a need to not stir the pot. By the end of DRK 50 she came to understand that they were trying to help her learn to set boundaries - just by astral projecting a version of herself that isnt afraid to say no lmao.

(i skipped talking abt 50-60 on twitter, but only bc i didn't really feel like aoife had any noteworthy experiences with the sidurgu/rielle leg of this questline lmao)

60-70 was where the DRK story finally clicked for me, and for Aoife it really helped put into focus that she had spent the back half of Heavensward blaming herself for what happened to Haurchefant. For Aoife, Myste represented the desire to see her dead loved ones again - childlike, maybe, but a desire that's natural for anyone who's lost someone they care about. Fray helped her come to terms with both her grief and her longing. To miss those who have gone is natural - to obsess over the past is unhealthy.

Do not seek forgiveness, for it will not ease the burden. It weighs as it should.

Listen to my voice. Listen to our heartbeat. Listen... I forgive you. I forgive you. I forgive you...

Those words finally released her from the guilt she'd been carrying all this time, and she was able to give herself permission to move forward. To appreciate the past for what it was, but not be shackled by it any longer.

(side note, the parallels between Myste's apparitions and Emet Selch's Amaurot are not lost on her later. It was a chilling realization that, had she been in Emet Selch's shoes, she can't say she wouldn't have gone down the same path he did)

Finally, drk 80 happens post-shb and uses an original Fray monologue based on the japanese text instead of the english text for the most part. sorry localization team, you guys really beefed it on fray half the time

so As You Can See i have a lot of Thoughts about Dark Knight for aoife lmao....... this isn't even getting into the DSR AU timeline where she picks up Dark Knight in early Heavensward instead, which gives her access to a tank LB3 at the Vault :)

his excitability and his love of technology. he TRIES to anyways. he really tries to appear so normal, so not a freak who has lived alone in an ancient mountain city for years. its hard to hide. he also tries to hide his teeth cause he thinks they may be scary (he is also not good at this, he loves to smile).

i did answer this one, but i will also share a story of how hana got humiliated by someone in a group of people that i doubt will ever make it in comic, but its been in my head for a while.

okay, so it goes like this. a couple years into the elves settling on hana's mountain, aoife and some other people there are like. late teens early 20's, hana is late teens as well. so they decide it would be really fun to pull an elaborate prank on hana. so, one of the guys (they have sussed out he is into guys) pretends to befriend hana, get really close with him, pretends to pursue a romantic relationship with him. nothing too romantic, just like. maybe holding hands a few times. hana is still icky and uncool so he wouldn't want to like.. kiss him or anything, ew. so hana's pretend bf invites him over, his parents are out at a night market so he's got the house to himself. and the pretend bf is like ;) i think its time we cement our relationship (bone) and hana is so nervous, but he's like, kind of excited. and pretend bf is like (sniffs) you ought to go wash up first though, you stink. so hana hops in the bath. and while he's in there, pretend bf is like 'oh, your clothes are stinky, im going to wash them. you can just come out when youre done in there' and hana is nervous about being nude, but this is his bf! it should be fine. its not fine and when he comes out, the prank squad pops out like its a surprise birthday party and they all laugh at him. they laugh at his body, they laugh at how he's nude, about how they see his peepee, at how stupid he was to think pretend bf would want to be his friend, let alone boyfriend, or that he'd want to bone him. they dont give him his clothes back and he does have to walk all the way home nude. for extra humiliation, people are walking out of the night market and see him walking through town nude and they're like wtf gtfo. hana goes home and cries about it.

so, that's hana's first relationship (if you count prank bfs).

aoife’s younger brother (he appeared very briefly on the phone in like chapter 15 I think) is currently like failing school really bad, so aoife’s dad has his hands full with him right now LMAO. aoife and her lil bro also used to fight really bad but it’s not so bad now that she’s an adult.

luna went to a really fancy highschool that was a girls school :-)

her best friend is also the daughter of a well known celebrity, so luna has a claim to fame BUT SHE NEVER NAME DROPS THIS EVER

chapter 13 has a fun secret(ish) double meaning to it’s title AHAHA but you guys can probably guess what it is

isaac’s mum is from Yorkshire so she has a really strong accent that Isaac didn’t inherit but he sometimes says phrases that he got from her!!!

ella’s dad is in a rock band, but he is kind of retired now, but he used to be pretty big back in the day especially in the Del Sol area!

finn’s favourite game is Call of Duty and he plays it regularly, he often has game nights where he calls his friends from back home. On my Year Book post he mentions a character named ‘Rowan’. His best friend from school

avery’s mom wouldn’t let them have pets as kids but avery really REALLY loves animals and he wants a pet dog really bad :’(
