The Wives : What We Know So Far (UPDATED - 4th March 2024)
Tumblr media
The first casting announcement of 2024 has finally been announced with the news of Channel 5's The Wives.
About
Written and created by Helen Black, The Wives is a domestic thriller that centres on 3 sister-in-laws, Sylvie, Natasha and Beth who, just as they have done for the last 15 years, embark on their usual family holiday to Malta. However, this year is different.
The official synopsis reads:
Last year, four sisters-in-law and their families escaped to their Maltese holiday apartments, as they’ve done every summer for fifteen years. Sylvie Morgan, was happily married, Natasha, was swimming in wealth, and Beth and Annabelle Morgan, were thick as thieves. But this year, as they come together again, everything is different. Sylvie’s now single and loving life, Natasha’s hiding a desperate financial situation, Beth is barely keeping her life together and Annabelle is, well… dead. When Annabelle’s widower Charlie, arrives with a new woman in tow, Beth tries to be happy for them, but something doesn’t sit right. Charlie’s new girlfriend Jade, looks exactly like Annabelle. Beth’s plans to have a great summer are quickly scuppered by Charlie’s odd behaviour, and her suspicion that there is more to Annabelle’s death is heightened. With lies coming to light and evidence building, the women work together and against each other to unravel the mystery and bring the culprit to justice. But with corrupt officials, drug cartels and career criminals closer to home than ever expected, have they bitten off more than they can chew?
The Wives has been ordered for Channel 5 by Sebastian Cardwell, Deputy Chief Content Officer, Paramount UK and Paul Testar, Commissioning Editor, Drama, Channel 5 and Paramount+. The truth is, as much as I wanted to be here with Hayley, an even bigger part of me just wanted a proper family Christmas again.

the opening scene of the pilot of waterloo road is so great.
"i predict a riot" plays as a kid smashes a school window, girls practice a dance routine, boys handshake, kids on phones, some girls bully another girl, two teachers stand in the midst, one yawning the other smoking, and a student tells them the head master is on the roof. cut to a man throwing boxes of papers onto the students below, ranting and raving about how much he hates the place, one of the teachers from the ground runs up to stop him and the headmaster collapses in hysterics in the teachers arms as the camera pans to the sky to show the title and logo. that's how you do it! can't wait for the new season!

Shakespeare North Playhouse, Prescot. Nikon F65. Expired Truprint 200 iso shot at 800 iso.
According to their website the Shakespeare North Playhouse is "inspired by Prescot’s historic connections to William Shakespeare and a real love of storytelling." The main auditorium is a timber framed and holds 470. The rather impressive building also boasts a studio theatre and a "performance garden."
I went along with my camera to see Johnny Vegas in conversation with Angela Griffin.

I will preface this by saying I haven’t watched Harlots season 3 in a while and I’m not a fan of it (aside from a couple characters)
content warning - mentions of homophobia, sex work, sexual exploitation
that said, I didn’t like a lot of the story decisions and writing that season but I really wish Elizabeth Harvey got fleshed out more
I am picking up what they were putting down with her - adding another angle to the different approaches to marriage, the discourse on how many characters choose not to get married even to men they’re in loving relationships with because it means a loss of freedoms - by making her a kind of dangerous bride who takes away her husbands’ freedoms by giving him her debts
I just wish that maybe there was another layer of nuance or something there … or idk, maybe I wish she had more screen time to develop as a character
additionally I think they could’ve gone more into the topic of her being an ally and starting a Molly house with her gay son as a way to provide a safe place for men who desire other men
like she’s definitely not perfect by any means and I love messy women on Harlots but I wish they addressed the dangerous aspect of their scheme(?) where they set up a super popular house and then run when their debts are discovered. Isn’t that arguably more dangerous for their clients, when they get busted for something else and then ditch, leaving everyone else in a place that’s being investigated?
Additionally there’s also the aspect of Fredo working under his mother’s employ and what that entails - since he kinda occupies the Charlotte / Charles spot (as a bawd’s oldest child) after they both leave the show.
Like, certainly she cares for her son, but would she be as enthusiastic about starting her own Molly house if it weren’t so profitable? The taboo / illegality of men having sex with men at the time meant they could charge double what other brothels were charging…
When did he start working for her in that way? Was it voluntary, or due to their poverty? If he wasn’t into men, would they be running some other scheme for money?
I just wish the show had characters question some of the more flawed aspects of her other than the whole marriage-debt no take-backs thing
(And I feel like I’m sugar coating things but in hindsight, it is a bit morally grey to employ your own child as a sex worker. Even if they’re an adult and seem fine with it now.
Admittedly I have 0 real life sex work experience. but still, I just feel like even in ideal conditions where the person starts as an adult and chooses that job voluntarily, there’s still the aspect of transforming your relationship from that of a parent and child to that of a boss and an employee.
But knowing the canon and the Harveys’ history of debts… they most definitely did not start this under “ideal conditions” or any kind, they were most likely making tough decisions and scraping by.
I wish they had a conversation about this or something - as the whole line about her wanting a safe space is the only thing I can remember right now)
