Pose star Billy Porter is set to play James Baldwin in a feature based on the life of the legendary novelist, essayist and activist for Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group Motion Pictures.

Porter and Dan McCabe will pen the script for the theatrical feature based on David Leeming’s 1994 book James Baldwin: A Biography. Broadway-trained Porter is a longtime devotee of Baldwin, having quoted from the legendary author and civil rights campaigner during his 2019 Emmy-winning acceptance speech.

The deep dive into Baldwin’s life and struggles represents the culmination of a long-held creative ambition for the Emmy-, Tony- and Grammy Award-winning performer, who is one Oscar short of an EGOT. “As a Black queer man on this planet with relative consciousness, I find myself, like James Baldwin said, ‘in a rage all the time.’ I am because James was. I stand on James Baldwin’s shoulders, and I intend to expand his legacy for generations to come,” Porter said in a statement.

The first casting announcement of 2024 has finally been announced with the news of Channel 5's The Wives.

About

Written and created by Helen Black, The Wives is a domestic thriller that centres on 3 sister-in-laws, Sylvie, Natasha and Beth who, just as they have done for the last 15 years, embark on their usual family holiday to Malta. However, this year is different.

The official synopsis reads:

Last year, four sisters-in-law and their families escaped to their Maltese holiday apartments, as they’ve done every summer for fifteen years. Sylvie Morgan, was happily married, Natasha, was swimming in wealth, and Beth and Annabelle Morgan, were thick as thieves. But this year, as they come together again, everything is different. Sylvie’s now single and loving life, Natasha’s hiding a desperate financial situation, Beth is barely keeping her life together and Annabelle is, well… dead. When Annabelle’s widower Charlie, arrives with a new woman in tow, Beth tries to be happy for them, but something doesn’t sit right. Charlie’s new girlfriend Jade, looks exactly like Annabelle. Beth’s plans to have a great summer are quickly scuppered by Charlie’s odd behaviour, and her suspicion that there is more to Annabelle’s death is heightened. With lies coming to light and evidence building, the women work together and against each other to unravel the mystery and bring the culprit to justice. ‘American Primeval’: Betty Gilpin, Dane DeHaan, Shea Whigham, More Cast In Taylor Kitsch Netflix Limited Series

Netflix has rounded out the cast for American Primeval, its upcoming limited series from Pete Berg, Eric Newman and Mark L. Smith. Betty Gilpin (Gaslit), Dane DeHaan (Oppenheimer) and Shea Whigham (Joker) join previously announced Taylor Kitsch, along with Joe Tippett (Mare of Easttown), Jai Courtney (Kaleidoscope), Kyle Bradley Davis (American Horror Story), Nick Hargrove (Devotion), Derek Hinkey (Walker Independence), Saura Lightfoot Leon (Hoard), Preston Mota (Asteroid City) and Shawnee Pourier (Stranger Things).

The six-episode American Primeval is described as a raw, adventurous exploration of the birth of the American West. The violent collisions of cultures, religions and communities as men and women fight and die for control of this new world – for a land they truly believe is their destiny. The ensemble tells a story of the sacrifice all must pay when they choose to enter a lawless and untamed wilderness.

Gilpin will play Sara Rowell, an extremely capable woman with an air of composure and grace that seems out of place in Fort Bridger as she seeks a guide across the frontier for her and her son, Devin.

DeHaan will portray Jacob Pratt, a Mormon leading his family across the frontier to join other settlers in Utah.

Whigham will play Jim Bridger, a grizzled realist but a decent man, Jim Bridgers runs his namesake Fort, a popular stopping point for settlers and trappers.

Tippett will portray James Wolsey, a Mormon man leading a militia of men who don’t possess the moral code they claim they do.

Courtney will play Virgil Cutter, a trapper and bounty hunter who sees opportunity in the naiveté of others.

Davis will portray Tilly, one of Cutter’s trappers, Tilly is a nasty, dangerous man who doesn’t mind killing to get ahead and rather enjoys it when others fear him.

Hargrove will play Cottrell, a young man that helps out around Fort Bridger and serves as Jim Bridger’s right hand.

Hinkey will portray Red Feather, the leader of a renegade group of Crow warriors known as the Wolf Clan.

Leon will play Abish, a Mormon woman not content with being seen as the property of her husband, Jacob.

Mota will portray Devin Rowell, a sensitive soul with a curious mind, Devin is Sara’s son.

Pourier will play Two Moons, a young girl who flees her village with a strong will and drive to survive at all costs.

They all join Kitsch, who portrays Isaac, a traumatized man struggling to overcome his demons and find a reason to live in this brutal and punishing world.

Berg will direct all of the episodes and exec produce for Film 44 alongside Newman, who exec produces for Grand Electric under his overall deal. Smith will write all episodes and exec produce.

[Anthony] Hopkins will play the founder of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud, on the eve of the Second World War as he approaches the end of his life and invites author CS Lewis over to debate the existence of God.

The drama explores Freud’s relationship with his daughter, and that of Lewis’ romance with his best friend’s mother.

Hopkins has also previously played Lewis, in 1993 film Shadowlands.

AMC Networks’ Interview With the Vampire is undergoing a big casting change. Bailey Bass, who played the series’ female lead, teenage vampire Claudia in Season 1, will not continue on the adaptation of Anne Rice’s novel. She is being replaced by Delainey Hayles, who is taking on the role for Season 2, which starts production next week in Prague and will also shoot in Paris and New Orleans.

The network said in a statement: “Bailey Bass is a talented actor who did a remarkable job bringing the character of Claudia to life in Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire. For a variety of reasons, Delainey Hayles will appear as Claudia in season two. We are grateful for Bailey’s unforgettable performance in season one and wish her nothing but the best.”

Bass issued her own statement: “Due to a variety of unforeseen circumstances I’m unable to return to Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire for the second season,” she said. “Playing Claudia has been a dream role and an incredible ride. I wish Delainey the best of luck in taking over. I cannot wait to watch. I’m extremely appreciative of AMC, the producers, Jacob, Sam, the crew and, of course, the wonderful fans.”

Madame Web will premiere in February, with Sweeney playing Julia Carpenter (who in the comics becomes Spider-Woman) opposite Dakota Johnson’s titular superhero.

When she booked the role, "I was freaking out, of course," Sweeney recalls. "I went straight to the comic store, and I bought every comic that mentioned my character."

..."I think it’s different from what people expect a superhero movie to be," she hints. "Quote that!"
