My thoughts on the Fontaine characters rn (pre 4.0)

I saw someone making a post about their thoughts and they were tragically wrong and I disagreed. So here I am, being opinionated.

I'm not gonna discuss leaks, I'm just talking about the character designs and what lore we know from the trailer and teaser :))

Lyney

So, Lyney is great. I love that he's kind of sussy, and his teaser that recently came out is almost... Sinister. And yet, he also checks the boxes of being really fun and extroverted! Venti vibes tbh.

Design wise? His animations are the best in the game, hands down. They suit the performance aspect of his character perfectly and are almost enough to make me pull for him.

Tragically, his character design isn't really for me. I think the simplicity works with the bombastic animations, and I'm glad to see he's wearing a reasonable outfit for the job he does (a rarity in Genshin). And yet, I'm a bit too much of a lesbian to be uber interested in the twinky direction his design leans.

Not pulling.

Lynette

So she's super cute. We have got a lot of cat girls already (I think Lyney should have also been a cat-person tbh) but I love that Lyney isn't actually doing cat things. Like, she's this subdued introvert, no meowing during her attacks or curling up in boxes like Kirara. She's just a person.... Who's also a cat.

I like her character design better than Lyney's; the blue just stands out a lot more than his red does, and the big bow is a better centerpiece to her design than Lyney's hat is to his. Plus, her animations are also nice.

We're getting her for free so I likely won't pull, but I am already preparing artifacts to build her on my account.

Freminet

Have I said how much I like sibling dynamics? These three actually seem pretty close and like they will gasp interact with each other! In comparison to the likes of the Kamisatos, this is miraculous.

I know several people who love this guy, and I do think he looks good. I saw some complaints about his hair cut (I think it's adorable), and the chunky boots & coat really serve to emphasise his awkwardness without sacrificing aesthetics.

Unfortunately, he's a physical claymore character, so it's a big skip from me.

Focalors/Furina

Well she's a brat huh. I worry after Raiden that they'll destroy Furina's character arc in order to make her more palatable, but I want her to go full Marie Antoinette. All the lore with the Oceanids disliking her and the general stuff about using the court for entertainment make me very interested in her.

As a design, I just dislike the twin tails. I love the blazer and the huge gem and the hat that's actually a crown!! Like, Furina is extravagant and over the top, obviously self obsessed - she looks perfect in that regard.

Since she's the archon and she's Hydro, she'll probably be broken meta wise. I'll likely pull, but mostly to make cool teams with her, not because she's a fave of mine specifically.

Neuvilette

... Father?

FR though, I understand why several people are crazy about this man. I do wish he looked a bit older since that's sort of where his characterisation is - he's done with Furina's shit and he's doing all the actual work of running Fontaine. With the elf ears, I expect him to be some sort of long-life species - he has no visible Vision and his hair kind of looks oceanid-like, so I figure he's not actually human. That along with the slits in his eyes. I hope he turns out to be older than Furina, and that he has a kind of reluctant dad & spoiled daughter relationship with her; we do see him tell her off in the teaser.

Neuvilette is the most feminine tall man character and the hair is a great aspect of the design. The colour palette is good and I do like the robes since he's a Judge, however I think it might get a bit boring to look at when you're playing as him - which is probably why the hair is so dramatic, in order to bring interest to the design.

He'll probably be Hydro and he'll probably be a catalyst based on that outfit (it's not exactly maneuverable enough for anything else ':))). I am interested in pulling almost a 100%.

Wriothesley

Another man???

I don't understand people talking about the lack of husbandoes in Fontaine, like look at these fine gentlemen.

We don't have much official info on Wriothesley so I'm gonna dip a little into leaks here, skip if you don't wanna know. He is some sort of prison warden which I bop with - it's an expected expansion on the justice landscape of Fontaine. He's on the rough side of the Fontaine infrastructure, in comparison to most of the other characters. That interests me since it feeds more into the duality themes of Fontaine, though currently we're unevenly biased rn to the more santized characters.

Design wise he's one of my favourites. White/black/red looks so good, as does his kind of punk esque chains. The tie puts me off somewhat, like he looks sort of smart and put together, but then the rest of the design undercuts that.

Leaks say Wriothesley is a physical standard banner five star. This fills me with fear. I also don't know what his actual personality will be, so let's say I'm undecided on pulling him.

Charlotte

I liked her personality and en VA in that one TCG event, unfortunately much like that event, Charlotte looks boring. She's cute, whatever, but she doesn't seem particularly story relevant and her design hasn't captured me.

I'm just not that interested.

Sigewinne(?)

Okay, she's cuter than Charlotte she's a sea slug person so immediately more interesting. She was also hanging out with Wriothesley, which is so adorable considering how different they seem.

We're dipping back into leaks here, but it seems like she might be another Hydro healer. I've seen people annoyed by this, but I'm perfectly fine with it - I don't have Kokomi and I like Nilou bloom as much as the next person.

If Sigewinne is a four star, I hope she's on a banner for a cool five star.

Navia

I know a lot of people like this woman. Taylor Swift etc (I am not overly into Taylor Swift), but I think Navia could be cool.

I find her design overcrowded. I do think this suits the fact that we're playing with French Revolution ideas and she's part of the bourgeoisie, so ofc she's overdecorated and elaborate in her fashion. Even though it makes sense, I still don't like the arsthetic of it.

On the other hand, I do like the yellow - it's not a colour we see in too many Genshin designs. I don't really like how it fits with the blue jewellery though.

Personality wise, I worry a bit that she's gonna be our waifu bait, but they did Dehya's characterisation really well without falling into that trap. Navia could be very fun and I think there's a lot of promise in the idea that she might be a class traitor, teaming up with us against the Fontaine government (wow Genshin loves a corrupt government huh).

Will I pull? She's a geo claymore user and my triple crowned Itto is already collecting dust. That's a no from me.

Clorinde

I've seen so many people mad at Clorinde when I think she looks great. Her outfit is simpler than is typical for Genshin, but that's cos she's a no-nonsense fighter type! Like how we saw with Lyney, more muted designs often mean more dramatic animations, and we already saw Clorinde doing some dynamic fight stuff in the trailer.

She really interests me in that she's a champion duellist, strong enough that even Childe wants to fight her. We see Clorinde works directly beside Neuvilette in the trailer, so she must be high up in position. A gun and a sword? She's trying to kill Navia, but the Devs describe their relationship as "complicated"??

Clorinde is an Electro woman and these are always queer fyi.

I hope she's pretty straight laced, but not quite in the Sara way. She's boring tbh, mostly because she is always answering to someone else, and she gets so little screen time. For Clorinde to work, I think she needs to have independence and apt presence in the story to be explored - not just a prop/obstacle.

Her personality makes me fearful, but rn I'm pulling 100%.

- i removed/shortened the sleeves due to the nature of his ability

- i would have made his pants into shorts for the same reason but i wanted to maintain his silhouette

- there's tears in his belt and shirt neck, just to show he's a physical fighter !

- added holes to his shoes just because they're really plain

- i felt bad taking away his necktie and thus the little two pins so i made it into an earring. it also lets his shorter bang have something dangling (a bit more symmetrical?)

- there's markings under his eyes to mimic the stripes of a tiger!

- his eyebrows are also modified to be shorter and thicker for the same reason? tigers have a dot shape placed above their eyes like an eyebrow but i wasn't sure if that would translate very well in the. sort of... realistic style of bsd

- i would have taken away his gloves since they serve no real purpose in battle and in his ability, though he looks cute with it so i just left it untouched

- his eyes were supposed to mimic cats more but i'm not very sure how much i executed that well...

- i gen think his design is top tier its simple its eye catching and u can tell a lot his personality (cold, stubborn, gloomy, etc.) from it alr

- i was unsure if i should move the white tips to his roots bc at least that would make it have him smth like the marie antoinette syndrome or allude to his illness but m like. undecided!!

- gloves!!! so he has a stealthier option to attack

- added like lil triangles in his coat belt so his silhouette mimics a devil's tail!!

- I REALLY LIKED HIS WIDE EYES FROM THE MANGA THAN THE DROOPY EYES HE HAS IN THE ANIME its just very black cat coded... also would explain his wan look

So I did read it.

It actually feels like the reporter was almost unfairly (one shouldn't be so mean to blinkered people) and definitely slyly taking the pi$$ out of her and her delusions of grandeur; but, that she is too self-absorbed to read between the lines, and the journalist knows it and so takes great delight in penning the daggers that surreptitiously cut to the bone. It is a work of stealth, rather like the glittering spangly OTT beauty of a drag queen who captivates you from a stage and you realise afterwards with some disappointment that it is actually a man. The elite New Yorker and DC intelligentsia will love it. It feels and reads like a piece of criticism disguised with a sprinkling of platitudes, syrupy descriptions and words that would make MeMe's heart sing; like their office appearing as if they sit on adjacent thrones gazing out at their empire. Cue the Pink Panther theme music.

It seems clear from the article that the writer had the feeling that it was all a great big show - a put-on - with the heavy use of adjectives describing a series of staged vignettes designed to paint the picture of serene, blissful homeliness, girl guide level good deeds and dismissive largesse. It is like putting lipstick on a pig. Between the lines, it screams fake! fake! fake! as you envisage red flags and sirens popping up with regularity in the writer's head and you can almost feel the panic sweat of the author as she negotiates her way out of a near-hostage situation. What with the harvest basket and baked goods with Lili's label on them and Archie delivering a weeks worth of fruit to school once a week, and giving a back pack to the security guard to give to the homeless man on the corner. For the intelligent reader, one can discern that the writer could see it was being laid on thick, but decided to work it. The final work reads as if she is a cross between a psycho Red Riding Hood, Alexis Carrington and Marie-Antoinette, as it waxes satirically on in a dream-like manner about her glorious life. You can literally feel the narcissistic glow that she emits to capture the writer's senses. Yet, I sense the writer was not really all that captivated, but perhaps laughing up her sleeve. I could almost feel the cathartic relief at the end as the writer escaped the clutches of madness.

I am calling it... this is a cleverly constructed hit-piece - that MeMe is probably ecstatic over - but also one that will have many people especially in Aberdeenshire laughing their heads off while spitting their cornflakes! It is a magnificent creation, a Trojan-horse cover story that paints a Daliesque portrait of delusionary grandiosity. It is absolutely melting, nay dripping, with sarcasm, darlings!

I can't wait to see what River makes of it. I am sure that he will be filled with glee as he dissects it for his little fruits, you know...

It's prongsfoot Wednesday, so let's share some HCs. 🐕🦌

☆ James and Sirius live in a muggle flat. It has a cosy indoor patio and a big balcony. It took Sirius quite some time to find it but James' happy smile made it worthwhile. The moment they moved in, James filled the balcony and patio with flower pots, in every size and shape, excited to have his own mini-garden. 

☆ They have a cat much to James' distaste. She either jumps on flower pots and ruins the blooms or paws the carpets when James takes Sirius' attention away from her. She is like a possessive daddy's girl (the daddy in question being Sirius), viewing James as an evil stepmother. James swears that the cat knows that she annoys James because sometimes she sleeps between Sirius and him, as if warning James to keep his distance from her daddy. James is ready to either remove the cat from Sirius' life or tear his own hair up in frustration but then Sirius smiles and thanks him for putting up with Marie Antoinette ( the infernal cat ) and James melts.

☆ They both have abandonment issues. They are terrified of losing each other. They cannot cope with even the thought of it or anyone hurting the other. James' wand and wit are always ready to defend Sirius, dirty hands be damned. Hurt Sirius Black and you will find your life destroyed. James is like an entertainer who seeks Sirius' full attention and views his unfortunate prey as entertainment for both Sirius and himself and since Sirius is the only one who has James on a leash, that poor soul needs to beg Sirius to make James stop. In Sirius' case, the defence mechanism is either harsh sarcasm or cruel anger. Hurt James Potter and you will be skinned alive. Sirius Black makes sure of it before tossing your corpse in the town's main square for everyone to learn their lesson. . 

☆ In the first weeks of his first year in Hogwarts, James struggled with selective mutism despite his extroverted nature, overwhelmed by the sudden absence of his parents and the foreign environment. Everyone dismissed it as a simple childish shyness but befriending Sirius was what helped him to find himself. Despite the popular belief, it was Sirius who helped James to settle in Hogwarts, not vice versa. 

☆ Sirius' nails are always designed in a neat french manicure with golden tips. His ring finger is coloured in a permanent red and has a delicate golden stag on the red background.

☆ James is the hopeless romantic and the more traditional one between the two, so he wears a ring. It's an invisible golden ring, private to Sirius and him but appears on his finger  when either of them loses their temper, triggered by jealousy or possessiveness.

☆ They both used to take waltz lessons as a part of their pureblood upbringing. Remus and Lily used to think waltz is useless for blood traitors like them until they saw them dancing in a charity event with such grace and harmony that could put any professional dancer to shame.

☆ Sirius loves to watch James' sleeping face. He looks much younger and innocent when he is lax with sleep, making Sirius want to kiss him endlessly. 

☆ James is an absolute service switch for Sirius. Sirius doesn't even need to ask to receive. 

☆ James is feral when it comes to Sirius' hair. That's his private territory, hands off everyone.

oh thank goodness i was so worried after sending that in but literally you see the vision. and the other thing is. and again i cannot express enough a thousand apologies. is that Lestat would think it the most capital R Romantic thing in the world. like he is soooo proud he now has physical proof(!!!) of how possessive and in love louis is with him. especially given how much of his catting around with antoinette was designed to provoke a reaction from louis. this is categorically the Most Reaction ever he could have hoped for. they are insane they deserve each other.

Tumbletta (Tumblebrutus and Hestia):

"Friends Don't" by Maddie & Tae will ALWAYS be one of the main songs I associate with Tumblebrutus and Hestia. Their relationship is the ultimate pining childhood friends to lovers, it just takes a while for them to confess their feelings because they don't want to ruin their relationship with their favorite person.

also, "Love" by Nancy Adams is 100% a Tumbletta song, it's just so sweet and soft, and I can absolutely see tha being the song Tumblebrutus and Hestia dance to at their wedding 😭

Being a triplet one might think the three Bonfamille children had a lot in common but it wasn’t quite that easy. From the moment they came into the world Marie was a spitting image of her mother. It was always clear that she was the daughter of Duchess who had already been well known as an heiress to Madame Adelaide Bonfamille fortune as she was her only daughter. This meant that they grew up in the spotlight of society. The children would have to attend events in their finest clothes and of course, they were infamous for going home a mess. One of them would get into trouble and the other two were sure to follow. However, it was Marie who felt like she got the biggest scolding when she wasn’t acting ladylike or the way that a girl of her stature should. As she got older she started to get more restrictive of herself to make sure that she was appearing in society as the woman her mother wanted. This meant she studied music diligently, the latest fashions, and even dabbled in business. Marie cared about how people saw her or at least she was taught to. In her free time, she was just that, free. She would climb trees, sit in the grass with a white dress on, and was known to never start a fight but always to finish them. 

Things were going well or so she thought, she had plans to go to school to obtain a degree in design and finally break free of the bubble she’d grown up in when everything changed. Before their 18th birthday the triplets world changed forever. Edgar Balthazar had been their butler for as long as Marie could remember, by now he was practically considered part of the family or so she thought. When it came time for the children to get their trust fund money he was furious upon hearing how much money they were getting while he was left empty handed. That’s when he deviated a plan and kidnapped them in order to get the money he so believed he deserved. The children had been betrayed by a man they saw as family and they would never be able to see him the same way again. Each of them was pulled for their own torture since he was finally able to release all the anger he’d felt towards them all these years. Marie found out the hard way that she was desired, having always been naive when it came to that sort of thing but this event changed her. She never told her brothers the details of what Edgar did to her, not wanting them to feel as though they couldn’t protect her. Instead she held onto that silently and tried to stay hopeful that they would be rescued. The children were held captive for a total of 9 days until the ransom money was pulled together and they were able to be found. Edgar vanished without a trace, leaving the kids to deal with the trauma and no sense of closure for the entire family. Madame and Duchess decided it would be best for the children’s safety to be sent to live full time at their vacation home on the Isle. Little did they know this was also where their estranged father, Tristan Tramp also resided. Marie is doing her best to move on with her life since then. She’s been singing more, as it feels like her only way to express how it all truly made her feel. When she sings, it’s the closest to her truth. Her life didn’t end up going how she planned but Marie is doing the best with what she has. After Edgar already took so much from her she doesn’t want to let it control the rest of her life though they all can’t deny the fear of him returning. All she can hope is that he never does but she’ll be ready if he does. 

She’s been learning taekwondo and boxing in case she ever needed to protect herself again she wanted to be prepared. 

Her best friend (besides her annoying brothers) is her cat, Princess Antoinette. 

Since coming to the Isle she’s become more adventurous and found herself getting into trouble more often than back home. Without her mother’s watchful eye, she feels like she is able to let loose a little. 

She struggles with sleeping, often getting nightmares about what happened when they were kidnapped. Even though she doesn’t talk about it she’s become quite dependent on drugs to sleep but when she can’t is when she writes her music. 

Marie runs a successful gossip column in the weekly newspaper as well as a fashion blog.

Clementine the Poet’s Cat

A curious, young ginger and white tabby belonging to a book shop owner. When she’s not walking along the tops of the shelves in an attempt to be tall ,or sleeping in the window; she’s hidden away, writing (bad) poetry with stolen office supplies. Accompanying her neighbour’s cat, Jennyanydots whenever she visits the jellicles, Clementine is usually seen hanging around the older cats who coddle her like Jennyanydots’ adopted grandchild, or being rambunctious with her closest friends Etcetera and Electra.

Antoinette the Designer Cat

A glossy, arrogant ragdoll cat who was thrown onto the street after being owned by a famous fashion designer who got bored of him. He now works for Macavity as a henchcat, getting into high society and acting as a sort of diplomat. He was declawed as a kitten so he’s unable to fight but this elegant tom will find other (and far more effective) ways to hurt you. After a chance encounter and a blooming romance with an ex-henchcat called Quasi, Antoinette is having second thoughts about siding with Macavity.

Hermes the Messenger Cat

A tall, lanky, black and grey tom and son of Serafina the Tragic Queen and Macavity. Raised by an old post man’s cat with no memory of his family, he’s a charming, cheeky cat with no particular attachment to any one group who bounces from the tribe, to high society, to henchcats; sending messages, gifts and occasionally gossip. Unaware that he holds dangerous magic like his father, Hermes is happy to be unattached and making his own way. Though he is beginning to believe he’s being haunted, often seeing the figures of a group of cats out of the corner of his eye when alone.

Malarkey the Henchcat

A hot-headed, snarky and short-tempered tom with black, white and red fur. He was raised by Macavity to be his right-hand man and eventual leader of his Henchcats. He’s the little brother of Plato but is unaware of it as Macavity took him after hearing of his magical abilities and has been lying to him that he’s his father in order to keep him as loyal as possible. Malarkey would do anything and everything to get the approval of his “father” and than includes hating the Jellicles with every fibre of his little being, even if he doesn’t 100% know why the Jellicles are so bad.

Alright...so I don’t know if any of you guys have watched Micarah Tewers on YouTube (you should if you haven’t), but I just watched one of her videos and it gave me big Marinette vibes and now I need her to run a YouTube channel like this...

It’s just the scatterbrained, fashion-loving, wholesome vibes that are packed into those videos that are screaming Marinette to me. They both have the perfect chaotic energy. Like the channel might offically be for fashion, but she gets distracted with random other things so often. Like just imagine...

Okay. Well I guess you just live in a big castle all by yourself and you can’t have croissants because your too poor to hire a chef and can’t make them yourself. How sad. Chat: *nodding* it’s so sad. Marinette: yes, now hold this role of velvet- — Marinette: hey everybody it’s Marinette. You can call me Marinette. No, it is not short for Marie Antoinette. — Marinette: I live in Paris. Sir did you never bake cookies with your mom? Wait- don’t answer that. Anyway, we’re changing the channel name to Marinette Bakes now I guess- (the channel is actually called Marinette Makes or something.) — She ends up having to do an interview with editing help from Alya to prove that she’s not Ladybug when people start theorizing. — Marinette: *walking down the street after fabric shopping* that’s Chloe Bourgeois. We are going to avoid her. She’s the mayors daughter. And we are not going to say anything else about her because, you guessed it, she’s the mayor’s daughter. — Marinette: *mad that something didn’t work* *makes an animation of an akuma coming for her* oH NO- — Constant interruptions by akumas.

Anyway, the vibes are great and the possibilities are endless.
