Research into oldest known burial field in the Netherlands sheds new light on traditional gender roles

New archaeological research into grave goods and skeletal material from the oldest grave field in the Netherlands shows that male-female roles 7,000 years ago were less traditional than was thought. The research was conducted by a multidisciplinary team of researchers led by Archol, the National Museum of Antiquities and Leiden University.

The real mound is located in Oman and Archol asked me to make a 3d printed object out of a 3d scan and this is the final result. There is a Sussex Squad tweet making the rounds that is quoting sources as saying that CBS exploited the Sussexes and manipulated them into granting an interview. The tweet says after manipulating them, there was no 'after care' for them and that they left them out to dry and deal with the fall out themselves. The tweet is on royal archoles IG. I hope that is not a new angle the Sussexes want to take because Oprah and CBS will bury them alive.

We can have this conversation when Sussexes pay CBS back the millions they made from the interview.

Week5

this week’s exercise was the first one back in lockdown. i admitt i didn’t have a smooth experiece transitioning back into online tutorials. i found motivation was a significant letdown.

the exercise begal with “loosening up” where we had to freehand draw circles. i got a bit annoyed at myself for not being able to draw a goddam circle, even going fast. 

then moved onto rough sketches of curved geometry, trying to understand how the light would reflect off. i fount this difficult to wrap my head around. i tried but never made progress so i just moved on as i was beginning to fall behind.

then moved onto concept design brainstorming in a grid and 1:2 scale. although the breif said not to modify the lid, i proceeded anyways which resulted in some intersting designs. after this we were encouraged to demonstate shading and inserting curved vectors so that the eye can better distiguish the nature of the geomentry. as i had not understood this. i used pen, felt tip, copic markers, pencil standing... nonoe of it looked anything near decent. i just gave up. like how the grid is not symtrical but it still did prserve original 2:1 dimensions. i was in a rush to catch up, i didn’t really care as long as i had my concept sketches on time.

i rember asing what makes a geometry inherrnantlt feminine and masculine. the answer i got was one with more curves and the other more harsh angles. this information didn’t seems to help the cocept sketches.

next we were to draw a two point perspective with a chosen final design. i wen for a simple form with 30 degree chanfers along the y axis and roughly 5mm fillets along the z axis. i drew two views on the same sheet. although i wanted to change the angle... the two vanishing poinds whould have been off the page of somewhere in A1 maybe A0 paper. i was too lazy to get another piece of paper and carefully line it up. furthermore i didn’t have eneough phisical space to do that on my desk. so i just moved on realising it was futile.

u thought i could make the bounding box more clearer but my ignorance got the better of me. i had used a red inked countain pen and the archol based ink on the A2 cheet did’nt wan’t dry so when i pulled the steel ruller away it left a ugly smudge mark in the page.

this week was not as enjoyable as others, partly due to lockdown again.

I made a list of all the RPG I made illustrations for on Itch.io.

Adventures On A Single Page I did the illustrations for adventure n°12, The Elven Temple.

ECOPUNK: 2044 I did a spread for this book, a cutaway of a city and two illustrations. Lancer Core Book I did two spreads for Lancer, a cutaway of a "mobile base" and an illustration.

Barkeep on the Borderlands I did two illustrations for Barkeep, a cutaway of an upside down tower and an illustration of a parade. ARCHOL-EOLOGIE I did all the illustrations for this pamphlet.

Abilities Considered Unnatural I did the cover, the maps and most of the illustrations. The Cleaning of Prison Station Echo I did maps for Station Echo.

REGIO – Castricummer Ron van Wezop, lid van Werkgroep Oud-Castricum, vond op 27 juni 2017 een gave en unieke hielbijl bij de archeologische opgraving in Zuiderloo te Heiloo. Het is een topvondst. Een bronzen bijl van meer dan 3.000 jaar oud. De bijl lag op een veenlaag in de strandwal. In de buurt van deze bijl zijn eerder de bekende sikkels van Heiloo gevonden. Ook zijn er grafheuvels in dit gebied gevonden.

De opgraving werd uitgevoerd door het bedrijf Archol uit Leiden. Archol werd bijgestaan door amateur-archeologen uit de omgeving. Ron van Wezop is al heel lang een deskundig metaaldetectoramateur en heeft een enorme kennis van metalen objecten die zich in de bodem bevinden. Meestal betreft het munten en mantelspelden.

De vondst van een bronzen voorwerp is zeldzaam in Nederland. Dat komt omdat brons kostbaar was. Voorwerpen werden omgesmolten of als offer gebruikt. Offers bracht men vaak op natte plaatsen zoals venen, plassen en rivieren.

De bijl zal zeker een plaats in het Rijksmuseum voor Oudheden krijgen omdat het een vondst van nationaal belang is. De ca 20 cm lange bijl leek nog ongebruikt en is scherp genoeg om er een appeltje mee schillen.

Extraordinary Merovingian cemetery excavated by Leiden University

In the last weeks of May 2017 a team of students, PhD’s and postdocs of Leiden University led by prof. Frans Theuws excavated a small but exclusive cemetery from the late 7th and early 8th century in the town of Veldhoven in the southern Netherlands. Leiden University cooperated with the Town of Veldhoven, archaeological companies ARCHOL (Leiden) and ADC (Amersfoort) and ArchAeO Consultancy (Eindhoven).
