3- "It's three in the morning"
Kendrick rolled over, pulling the blanket up further over him. His wings twitched with the adjustment, but he ignored them.
Stupid insomnia.
Ever since getting his new roommate, he'd been finding it harder to stay asleep at night. He wasn't sure if it was anxiety or just a result of the change. Either way, restlessness was getting annoying.
Kendrick had almost fallen back asleep when he heard his door slowly creak open. He sat up, rubbing his eyes.
In the doorway stood- to Kendrick's surprise -his roommate, Arya. Their eyes were red, dark bags hanging underneath, and they were shivering slightly.
"...Kendrick? A- are you awake..?"
"...yeah?" He yawned. "It's three in the morning. What do you need?"
Arya looked down to the floor, rubbing their arm. They never seemed like this in the daytime- Kendrick was both curious and concerned.
"...can- can I sit with you for a minute..? I- I.."
...huh?
"Uhm.. sure?"
Kendrick scooted over, gently patting the mattress next to him. Arya shuffled across the floor and sat down next to him, crossing their legs.
"...you- you alright?" Kendrick's wings twitched again, fluttering softly for a moment. He mentally cursed himself.
They just wanted to sit down with you, Kendrick. Calm yourself.
Arya was quiet for a moment, staring down at the floor.
"..just- just nightmares. It- it's nothing, but.."
...but you trusted me..?
Kendrick smiled softly. "It's okay."
He reached out, very carefully rubbing Arya's back. They flinched, and Kendrick quickly pulled his hand back.
Stupid. That was stupid, why did I-
Kendrick's thought trailed off as Arya grabbed his hand, glancing up.
"You- you don't have to- to stop," they mumbled. "You just... you just surprised me, that's all.."
Kendrick blinked in surprise. Arya smiled sheepishly before letting go of his hand, looking back down. It may have been his imagination, but they seemed to have scooted closer, as well.
Kendrick's wings fluttered again. He barely noticed this time as he reached out, gently rubbing Arya's back. Arya shuddered slightly, stifling a yawn.
..they do trust me.
Kendrick kept rubbing their back, slowly adjusting so that Arya could lay in his lap. They didn't protest. They were clearly exhausted- coming into his room probably took all the brainpower they had at the moment.
Not even a few minutes later, Arya had dozed off again. They lay with their head in Kendrick's lap, curled up softly.
...they're so cute.
Kendrick carefully laid down, trying not to wake Arya up. He smiled down at his roommate one last time before shutting his eyes.

The Coast Guard plans to take the boat to a facility for further inspection. The process to lift the boat and tow it to shore involved several divers, a barge crane and water pumps.
In addition to the salvage effort, investigators are looking into questions about the accident, including ones about the weather, life jackets, the boat and the actions of the crew, officials said.
Changing routes
The amphibious vessel changed the route it took on Thursday, Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley said Saturday. The boat capsized as a storm and high winds lashed the lake.
Investigators want to know “when did the driver and (captain) of this vessel know about this storm forecast? When did they decide to alter the route of the boat?” he said. “Because they did alter the route of the boat. When did they decide that? Why?”
The state is looking into the incident to see whether any criminal acts were committed, Hawley said.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating to determine the cause of the sinking. The NTSB investigation into the sinking could take up to a year to complete, boardmember Earl Weener said Friday.
The attorney general said investigators from the Missouri State Highway Patrol will also look at the boat’s canopy and how difficult it was for the passengers and crew to get off during the chaotic event.
Early warning signs
In August 2017, mechanical inspector Steven Paul saw a glaring problem when he examined the duck boat.
“One of the most prominent things I found was the exhaust being in front of the vessel, which — according to Department of Transportation standards — would not pass regulation,” he told CNN’s “New Day” on Monday. “The exhaust has to come out past the passenger compartment.”
When he saw footage of the boat sinking, Paul said “with the exhaust coming out the front and going down below the water line, the waves are obviously pushing water up in that exhaust.” If water gets in the exhaust, he said, “the engine is eventually going to stop.”
After telling the operator of the duck boat about his findings last year, Paul said he pretty much got a “Thank you for your report.”
Paul said the regulation of duck boats need to be changed. Duck boats carry tourists on both water and land, so they’re regulated by two separated agencies — the Coast Guard for when the boat is on water, and the Department of Transportation when the vehicle is on land.
“There is a huge disconnect between the US Coast Guard and the Department of Transportation,” Paul said.
Severe thunderstorms hit Branson
Branson is about 200 miles from Kansas City, and is considered a major family vacation destination.
The town was under a severe thunderstorm warning issued about half an hour before the boat capsized. There were numerous reports of damage throughout the county, including trees down and structural damage, said CNN meteorologist Taylor Ward. The highest wind gust reported in the area was 63 mph.
“I believe it was caused by weather, yes,” said Stone County Sheriff Doug Rader.
Jim Pattison Jr., president of the company that owns the duck boat tours, Ripley Entertainment Inc., said the ferocious squall “came out of nowhere.”
“Obviously, we shouldn’t be out there in severe weather,” he said.
The victims
The victims ranged in age from 1 to 76 years, authorities said.
The driver of the duck boat, Robert Williams, 73, died in the sinking, said his widow, Judy Williams.
Other victims included Steve Smith, a retired teacher from Osceola, Arkansas, and his teenage son, Lance; William and Janice Bright, a married couple from Higginsville, Missouri; William Asher and his partner, Rosemarie Hamann from Missouri; and Leslie Dennison from Illinois, according to family friends, CNN affiliates and local media reports.
One survivor lost 9 relatives
Tia Coleman and 10 of her relatives were on a family vacation from Indiana, taking a tour Thursday of Table Rock Lake near the Missouri tourist hotspot of Branson.
Her husband, her three children and five other members of her family died in the accident. Their names were: Angela, 45; Arya, 1; Belinda, 69; Ervin, 76; Evan, 7; Glenn, 40; Horace, 70; Maxwell, 2; and Reece, 9. They had been on a family vacation from Indiana.
Only she and her nephew survived when the boat sank.
Coleman said Monday night on “Anderson Cooper Full Circle” that her spouse tried to rescue their children. “Somebody told me that when they found my husband, he had all three of my babies.”
“That right there will keep me fighting for my family forever,” Coleman said. “To know that he did (was) exactly what he always told me when we first met: ‘I will always take care of you and our children.'”
Since the disaster, a GoFundMe campaign to help Coleman has raised more than half a million dollars in just two days. As of Tuesday morning, $619,106 has been raised.
Elsewhere, Ride The Ducks Branson said it will pay all related medical bills and funeral expenses for victims. The company also said it will help with any travel or accommodation needs that will help victims’ families.
No one was wearing a life jacket
The 17 people who died in the duck boat tragedy were not wearing life jackets when found, a source with knowledge of the investigation told CNN Sunday.
There were life jackets on the boat, but passengers weren’t required to wear them, according to Rader, the Stone County sheriff.
Coleman, one of the 14 survivors, said passengers were told there was a storm coming before the trip. The captain mentioned the life jackets before they went on the lake but said, “you won’t need them so we didn’t grab them,” Coleman said Saturday.
“The captain did say something about life jackets. He said, ‘Above you are the life jackets, there are three sizes, but you won’t need them,'” Coleman said Saturday night.
She told CNN affiliate KOLR: “When that boat is found, all those life jackets are going to be on there because nobody pulled one off.”

Part 2
Arya's heart raced, making the pain in their back throb even more intensely. They grabbed at the blanket, bunching it up in their hands.
"Arya?!" Kendrick paused the game, tossing the controller to the side. "What's going on? Are- are you sick, what..?"
"I'm. Fine," they choked out, shutting their eyes. "Don't- don't worry about- aaAAGH-"
"Clearly, you aren't fine!" He said, his voice edged with panic.
Kendrick grabbed Arya's wrist, gently pulling them towards him. They didn't protest, but the pain didn't ease when they sat up. If anything, it seemed to intensify.
Arya pressed their forehead into Kendrick's arm, gritting their teeth. "I- I gotta- my room-"
"Your- what?" Kendrick sounded puzzled. "Arya, what's going on? What aren't you..?"
Kendrick trailed off, looking down at Arya. He slowly rubbed their back, grabbing at the bottom of their sweater and pulling it up.
"Arya?" He said softly. "Do you have any Winged in your family?"
"Wh-" Arya glanced up. "No, I don- I don't--"
They curled up again, clenching their fists as more pain shot through their back. It felt like their skin was on fire where Kendrick's hand had brushed.
"Are you sure? No cousins, or...?"
"No, I-" Arya sucked in a breath. "Kendrick, why- why are you-"
Kendrick slowly, very, very slowly laid a hand down on Arya's back, right between the shoulder blades. Arya immediately pulled away, barely suppressing a scream.
"Do- don't-- don't to- touch me.."
Kendrick gasped quietly, pulling his hand back. "..has this happened before..?"
Arya took a deep breath, sitting up. "N- no, I- m- my- the b- binder--"
"What binder?"
Oh, shit. I- I shouldn't have said that.
Arya went pale, reaching up and pulling the back of their sweater down. "..m- my parents had- had me wear it, to- to.."
"How long?" Kendrick looked panicked again. "How- how long have you been..?"
"Since I was- was in high school," Arya said, raising an eyebrow. "It's not--"
Arya doubled over again, choking out a sob. It felt like their back was being crushed in a vise, wound tighter and tighter until it would break.
"Come here," Kendrick said, struggling to keep his voice level. "Come back over here, Arya."
"I- I--"
Kendrick grabbed Arya's wrist again, standing up and slowly pulling Arya to the edge of the bed. He pulled them into a hug, carefully avoiding touching between their shoulders.
"I know it hurts. It's gonna be okay. It's gonna be okay, you hear me?" Kendrick whispered. "This is the worst part. You're gonna be okay, I promise."
"Wh- what- how do you--"
"You're growing your wings, Arya." He rubbed their back, pulling their sweater up again. "You're finally growing your wings."
"What? B- but.." Arya looked up at him. "I- I'm not- my family.. I'm too old."
"I don't know why. I don't. But I can tell- you're Winged, Arya. You're growing wings."
Arya opened their mouth to respond when the pressure in their back doubled, making their words die in their mouth. They lurched forward, pressing their face into the fabric of Kendrick's hoodie.
The air felt icy on their skin, so cold it almost burned. Something on their back twitched, sending another jolt of pain running up to their head.
Kendrick went quiet, just holding on to Arya. He ran his hand through their hair, gently rubbing their back underneath where- where...
..is- is he telling the...?
Arya shut their eyes, concentrating. They found that if they concentrated, pushing the pain aside just for a moment..
Air whooshed across their back, sending chills down their spine. They- they really had..
"Oh, Arya..."
Kendrick let go of them for a moment, reaching out and stroking Arya's wing. His hands felt hot, rubbing against the new feathers, but Arya didn't protest. It distracted from the pain, and that was what they needed right now.
"A- are-- are th- they like- like y- yours..?"
"No," Kendrick said softly, shaking his head. "No, they.. Arya, they're beautiful. You've got Feathers, not- not insect wings."
"It- it h- hurts.. I- I--"
"Shhh, it's okay. It's okay, it's almost over. You'll be okay."
The two sat like that for several more minutes, Kendrick slowly straightening Arya's feathers as their wings grew. Arya sobbed quietly, grabbing at the blanket, their legs, Kendrick's arms- anything to try and get their mind off the pain.
Finally- finally, the pain dulled, back to its usual throb. Arya sighed, their breath shaky as they slid back down onto the bed. Their wings twitched slightly before folding up, lying neatly against their back.
Kendrick smiled, kneeling down and hugging Arya.
"..welcome to the world of the Winged, Arya."

24- "You're trembling."
Arya took a deep breath, laying down on their bed. They pressed their face into the coolness of the pillow, shutting their eyes.
Their back throbbed, their binder rubbing their shoulders raw. Yet still they left it on.
It's for the best, son. To make sure you don't turn into one of those freaks.
Arya rolled over, letting their back sink into the mattress. They still didn't understand why their parents had been so adamant about them staying bound. But if taking it off would make them some kind of freak, they would rather leave it on.
Ever since moving out, however, the binder hadn't quite seemed to fit right. A bit too tight, a bit too rough- as if it had shrunk in the wash, or something.
Maybe.. maybe if I just leave it off, for a couple of hours... No. No, just suck it up. Pain is temporary.
Arya sighed, opening their eyes. The fan spun in lazy circles above them, making a quiet clinking noise.
Though, it wasn't loud enough to mask the sound of the front door opening.
Kendrick must be home. I should probably throw my sweater back on.
Arya sat up, reaching for their sweater. They had moved to pull it over their head when they hesitated.
...we're just at home.. it- it couldn't hurt to...
Arya slowly slipped off their binder, setting it aside before pulling on their sweater.
It won't matter if we don't go anywhere. I'll be fine.
"Arya?" Kendrick called. "You in here?"
"Yeah! I'll be right down, okay?"
"Okay!"
Arya took a deep breath before standing up, turning off the fan and heading downstairs.
Kendrick smiled when he saw them, his wings fluttering behind him. Ever since their conversation a few days ago, he'd been a lot more open about having them out at home.
"How was school?" Arya asked.
"It was alright. Boring as usual," Kendrick said with a smile.
"Well, I'm sure some snacks and a bit of gaming would be more entertaining."
"Oh?" He raised an eyebrow. "I'll get the snacks if you get the game started."
"Deal."

Arya sat down on Kendrick's bed, grabbing a piece of licorice and taking a bite. "You gonna play first?"
"If you're okay with it."
"Whatever works."
"Okay."
Arya laid back on one of Kendrick's pillows, trying to get comfortable. But as soon as they did, pain shot through their back like a knife. They quickly sat back up, startling Kendrick.
"...Arya? What's wrong?"
"Uhhh..." Arya gulped. "..nothing. I- I think I just twisted wrong, or something."
Arya forced themself to lay back down, ignoring the pain. It felt like someone was twisting a hot fork between their shoulders, burning away at their back, but they said nothing.
They took another bite of their licorice, trying not to let their hand shake. "N- need any help on the level..?"
"No, I think I.." Kendrick looked back at them, trailing off. "Arya, are you sure you're okay? You- you're trembling."
"Y- yeah, I- I-"
Arya was cut off as the pain intensified, making them gasp. They tensed up, pulling their legs up as they curled into a ball.
I should've left it on, I should've left on the binder, I should have listened, I- oh GOD, I SHOULD HAVE LISTENED

50- "People are staring."
Arya had never seen Kendrick's wings.
Arya wouldn't have pegged Kendrick as the kind of person to hide their own wings. Despite his shyness on the surface, he was usually pretty outgoing and friendly.
It doesn't matter, Arya kept telling themself. If he doesn't want me to see, then I don't have to see.
But Arya's curiosity was persistent.
Arya decided to treat Kendrick to coffee and donuts one day, to get them both out of the house. They took the food from their orders and sat down, starting to munch.
"...hey Kendrick?"
Kendrick looked up from his drink, raising an eyebrow. "..yeah?"
Arya hesitated.
"...can- can I see your wings..?"
Kendrick blinked, clearly surprised. He shoved his donut in his mouth, taking a bite and looking away.
Arya cursed quietly, tensing up. Smooth. Real smooth, dumbass.
"..sure." Kendrick's face had flushed, but he smiled. "I- I didn't realize that you hadn't.. you know."
Kendrick reached around his back, undoing the clasps on his jacket.
"You.. you won't make fun of them, right..?"
"Of course not."
"Promise..?"
"I promise."
Kendrick opened his wings, glancing down. Arya gasped quietly as he did.
Kendrick had gorgeous wings- the sun making them shine in all different colors. Though they weren't the typical feathered wings, the multicolored insect wings were far from something to be ashamed of.
"Kendrick.." Arya whispered. "They're.. they're.. why would you hide them?"
"I-" His wings fluttered slightly. "I don't like the looks I get. I don't like it when people are staring."
"..ah. Well-" Arya cleared their throat. "I think they're amazing. But whether or not you wanna show them, I support you. Okay?"
Kendrick smiled. "..okay."
