walking up to aunty em's seeing all the monster statues out front, thinking.. this place is freaky... but then you realize. no. they're statues because they're bullies. these are Monster monsters aunty em turned to stone. surely that means she isn't the monster. and she talks so sweetly and she gives you food and tells you you don't have to be like your terrible parents with their own monstrous legacies.. but then things start to feel off and you become unsettled and she's telling you to betray your friends and you can't do that, so you find a place to hide... but when the lights turn on you see that hiding place for what it is.. the tomb of the People. of the heroes and satyrs and good honest people who did not deserve to be turned to stone. aunty em can talk a pretty talk. she can show you the side of the story that she knows will compel you, but she never told you about her own monster story, did she? maybe it didn't have to do with the curse athena dealt her. maybe it had to do with how she chose to use it. and now you've learned the full story..

I feel like goth and horror lovers are great customers for Medusa at her store. Like you find this garden store that's kinda off the beaten path and the lady there has the most insane monster statues youve ever seen.
"Oh my God, this Hellhound statue is gonna look great in our garden. We'll take it!"
Or people who do haunted attractions buying stuff off her. Imagine some haunted house was doing a gorgon theme, not knowing they commissioned actual Medusa for her statues.
"Yeah, we're doing a Gorgons Garden for our haunted house. So we really want some scared people statues to put outside. Do you think you can have those made in time?"
"Oh yes, I can get that done in plenty of time."

annabeth IMMEDIATELY knows it’s medusa lol
thinking abt how sally used medusa’s story to teach lil percy that appearances aren’t everything and “not everything that looks like a monster is a monster”. very interested to see what they do with her in this version of pjo

been rewatching percy jackson now 3 episodes are out and the sally/medusa parallels are insane!
the one i picked up on the most was episode 1 in montauk, percy watches sally in the kitchen the same way he watches medusa
difference is he leaves medusa but stays with/goes to sally
bit of a reach but it could show how poseidon left medusa to her fate but in the books we are shown how he still cares for sally despite everything (calling her beautiful multiple times, low-key flirts with her at percy's birthday party, asks about her)
anyway i just love the new series!

Thinking about how Sally told Percy at a you g age "not everyone who looks like a monster is one" (talking specifically about Medusa.
He's gonna be hesitant to hurt Aunty Em.
I'm so excited to see him realizing it's Medusa because of how that previous scene will impact his reaction.
What with a bunch of people saying the changed Gabe doesn't deserve to be Medusa'd (idk how I feel), maybe... Maybe they don't kill her?
Hmmm....

yknow, one of things about the book that would have really benefited from an upgrade was a heavier focus on the characters' adhd and dyslexia. i really figured the show would build on the neurodivergency angle, since it's supposedly the updated version of pjo, but if anything there was LESS mention of it??

percy trying so hard to hold onto the lessons his mother had taught him, so hard to trust her stories about medusa and monsters... only to be presented with evidence that directly contradicted those lessons and stories. and yet the moment medusa suggested he betray his friends, he was gone. he had made his decision. he would listen to his mom and take her advice into account, but at the end of the day, she wasn't here. and the discernment of who medusa really was fell on his shoulders. it was his responsibility, in that moment, as the one who had led them into the proverbial gingerbread house, to identify who the real monster was. regardless of what his mother had told him.
i can only imagine how difficult that would have been. to question his mom when he's using her as his beacon, his guiding light, especially during this quest

I often wonder about closeted arospec celebrities. When I was a kid, it wasn't easy for celebrities to be openly queer. My friends and I would speculate, as middle schoolers do, about celebs.
On the rare occasions that I pay attention to a celebrity outside of their profession, I play a mental game of "are they arospec?" It probably stems from the same need for representation we had when I was growing up, but sometimes I wonder if there are significantly more public figures who are arospec than we realize.

One thing that was weird to me in an interview Rick made after the Medusa episode was when, in regards to the changes from the books and how Annabeth instantly figured out where they were, he says around the lines of "Oh she's a daughter of Athena, goddess of wisdom, so why didn't figure this out sooner in the books" or something like that (correct me, politely, if I am wrong). And, to that, while I understand wanting things to be different from the books it's also important to note that isn't it implicitly stated that, in the books, both Percy and Annabeth were under some sort of magical spell that basically had them throwing out basic thinking out the window? And also weren't they literally starving after having little to nothing to eat for hours? And also, again, they were kids! They probably aren't going to figure things out right away no matter how smart, especially when hungry!

usually i don't look at writers of specific episode, but can we take a moment to appreciate that episode three, medusa's episode, had a female writer of color? Monica Owusu-Breen really went i'm going to speak directly to the discourse surrounding medusa and ATE, and Jessica Kennedy took the script and ran
