I put one quip about the pjo show in the tags of my own post and I got people coming out of the wood work telling me that I just "don't understand what the show did!!!" and once again, it seems I must clarify that unfortunately I do understand <3 I simply didn't like it <3

Rick Riordan constantly trashing the movies for not sticking to his books then releasing a show in which he rewrites everything and loses the spirit of the books entirely

the percy jackson show feels like rick riordan broke into my house and moved all of my furniture a little bit to the left. everything is familiar yet distressingly unfamiliar at the same time and i can't get comfortable

My prediction for son of neptune is that Percy is going to wake up and immediately go: "I know who I am. I'm Percy Jackson and I got kidnaped by Hera and she erased all my memories so me and Jason Grace could bring greek and roman demigods together"

My biggest beef with the way Annabeth was written in the show is that I think Rick fell into his own trap. Like his whole thing with Annabeth is that just because someone doesn’t look smart doesn’t mean they aren’t. And while it’s about their literal looks for both the show and the book, book Annabeth also sometimes acted in ways that people wouldn’t stereotypically associate with “smart” because I think we’ve all be condition to think bbc sherlock no emotions genius is the only way to be smart. Book Annabeth acts super flustered around Luke because she's a kid and she has a crush on him, she's afraid of spiders, and wanted to see the arch just because she thought it was cool. In general book Annabeth is allowed to be sillier and have a wider range of emotions than show Annabeth without it detracting from the fact that Annabeth is smart. I find this whole "stoic genius" idea is often used to put down teenage girls for being dumb and superficial just because they show emotions and the only way to beat it is to be cold, calculating, and emotionless and most people just aren't like that.

Changes are expected when a story is translated from books to the screen, and than there’s whatever the hell the pjo show is doing

Something that is confusing me is how many people are defending the changes Rick made and defending Rick himself in regards to the show.
He lied to us.
He got the entire fandom to hype up the show, got the show made on the basis of getting a book accurate adaption. This was supposed to be something accurate to the books, including the book characters, the book scenes, the book stakes- we were supposed to get to see our favorite moments in the books on screen.
And then he went and rewrote the book.
This adaption isn't the book we read. The characters aren't the characters we read. Grover's personality was wholesale replaced. This is something entirely new-
And whether you like it for itself is a different matter entirely, but the point is that... this isn't The Lightning Thief that we read years ago.
He lied to us.

I do think the gateway arch being a secret Athena temple or whatever is interesting but I will always hold a place in my heart for the book reason as to why they went to the arch which was simply "Annabeth really likes architecture and wants to see the Arch really bad so we're going to take some time away from our high stakes, time sensitive quest to do so."

never a lukabeth(?) shipper because gross and not why annabeth loves luke at all but the LACK of relationship exposition between the two of them in the show is PISSING me off genuinely. luke and annabeth's relationship is CRUCIAL to the conflict Luke has with the gods and his subsequent redemption, as well as the entire driving force for book 3,4, and 5. it was a relationship that percy was jealous of, not simply because he liked her romantically but because it was a side of Annabeth that he never got to see and a type of bond that he never had with her, despite going through so much together.
letting Luke say "oh Annabeth and I are like family" and then never even let them interact with each other makes absolutely NO SENSE. this lack of relationship exposition between the two of them completely takes away Annabeth's emotional investment when facing Hermes and explaining May's curse. its PAINFUL for her to talk about them because it PAINS Luke and she can TELL.
if you're not gonna build up their relationship, why do we waste precious screen time with Hermes and make the Lotus Casino Scene so... meh??? When it could have been fun and whimsy and silly and the kids can take a shower and hear some weirdo say groovy and realize gambling is a trap!!!??
It also robs Annabeth of such character depth in PAINS ME. shes just a girl. shes awkward and have crushes and is emotional and is scared of losing people she loves. shes not just "six step ahead of everyone child soldier prodigy" MY GOD.
and of course i love seeing percabeth on my tv but dear LORD having luke say "youre like an old married couple" is SO OUT OF CHARACTER and to have Annabeth not even respond flustered or embarrassed?????? ITS THE SLOW BURN OF THE CENTURY I DO NOT NEED YOU TO HAMMER IT INTO MY HEAD THAT THEYRE MARRIED AT 12. I FIGURED THAT OUT WHEN HE SACRIFICED HIMSELF TWICE FOR A GIRL HE JUST MET.

listen i understand hades was funny and cool but i need us all to sit down for one second and reflect about how much Hades not being the Hades of the books will affect the story because. this is the guy Nico is supposed to be terrified of. the story doesn’t work if Nico’s relationship with his father isn’t insane. this is the guy that refuses to fight Kronos until last minute!!! this is the guy that rules the Underworld with an iron fist!!! be so serious rn😭

when I say I’m annoyed at the show’s changes, I don’t mean that I expected it to be 100% the same as the books, that’s impossible and would’ve been a bit boring even.. no, what I’m upset about is that they sold the show as this
Tumblr media
and then made it this

no suspense, foreshadowing, buildup, or ominous vibes in this show. nothing feels like it has weight. like this is supposed to set up a series-long conflict with kronos. I hate how percy was just like "it's kronos" like omg. so anticlimactic. kronos is supposed to feel like a major threat. when annabeth starts to put the pieces together, she doesn't even want to say it. the revelation should have been built up with some effort like damn

rip to percy stacking the drachmas that was so cunty of him
on a serious note i'm surprised they didn't include any mention of hades not paying charon enough or playing with cerberus enough considering how much they're honing in on the "gods suck" angle. like damn the book already gave that to you

People saying that it makes sense for them to know everything about the monsters the second they encounter them because they know a lot about greek mythology don't get that the point of the books was that even if Annabeth did knew a lot about monsters and gods the real world was completely different to everything she had been training for at camp. At the end of the day they are just 12 year olds in their first ever quest and they are going to make stupid mistakes like entering a random women's house just bc they smelt cheeseburgers or going to the gateway arch just bc annabeth wanted to see it even if they literally had no time to do it. Which in my opinion is way more realistic and enjoyable than seeing them know exactly what they have to do five seconds into the episode
