The EARTHSHOT PRIZE AWARDS 2022 Ceremony will take place at the MGM Music Hall at Fenway on December 2nd.
THE FINALISTS:
FIX OUR CLIMATE:
44:01 (Oman) - According to the UN, removing CO2 is essential if we are to limit global warming. Oman-based 44.01 removes CO2 permanently by mineralising it in rock.
LanzaTech (USA) - Carbon, released into the atmosphere, heats the planet. LanzaTech are using bacteria to recycle carbon pollution into profitable and sustainable products.
Low Carbon Materials (United Kingdom) - Concrete is responsible for an extraordinary eight percent of the world’s CO2 emissions. Now, thanks to UK based LCM, production could soon go from unclean to green.
CLEAN OUR AIR:
Ampd Enertainer (Hong Kong) - The construction industry is difficult to decarbonise and is one of the biggest drivers of air pollution. Ampd Energy has revolutionised the way we power construction.
Mukuru Clean Stoves (Kenya) - Across Africa, 700 million people use traditional cookstoves, which emit harmful chemicals and lack safeguards. Mukuru Clean Stoves are different.
Roam (Kenya) - The electric vehicle revolution is coming to East Africa. Roam is bringing affordable, electric transport to one of the world’s fastest growing regions.
BUILD A WASTE-FREE WORLD:
City of Amsterdam, Circular Economy (The Netherlands) -  In 2020, The City of Amsterdam committed to becoming a circular economy. By 2050, it aims to waste nothing and recycle everything.
Fleather (India) - Flowers cast into the Ganges river contain highly toxic pesticides. Phool used this floral waste to make a sustainable alternative to leather.
Notpla (United Kingdom) - 6.3bn tonnes of untreated plastic waste currently litter our streets and fill our seas. Notpla shows us that the future is not plastic, it’s seaweed.
PROTECT & RESTORE NATURE:
Desert Agricultural Transformation (China) - The climate crisis means more of the Earth will become inhospitable desert. But now, thanks to Desert Agricultural Transformation, barren landscapes are turning into lush, green oases.
Hutan (Malaysia) - In Malaysian Borneo, research organisation Hutan is working with the local community to develop a more harmonious coexistence between its wildlife and people.
Kheyti (India) - Eight in ten of the world's farmers are smallholders. Beset by climate-affected harvests, Kheyti's Greenhouse-in-a-Box is helping them reduce climate risk and increase yields.
REVIVE OUR OCEANS:
Indigenous Women of the Great Barrier Reef (Australia) - The Great Barrier Reef is under constant environmental threat. Now, the Indigenous Women of the Great Barrier Reef are empowering each other to protect critical ecosystems.
SeaForester (Portugal) - Human activities and the climate crisis are decimating underwater seaweed forests. Pål Bakken and the SeaForester team are on a mission to restore them.
The Great Bubble Barrier (The Netherlands) - Every year, more than 8 million tonnes of plastic ends up in the world’s oceans. The Great Bubble Barrier's solution intercepts plastic waste before it reaches the sea.

Why can't south america bid? what rules? what's going on???
currently when a country from a certain federation (like uefa [europe], conmebol [south america], caf [africa]) hosts the world cup, no other country from that federation can host the next two world cups. for example, since qatar hosted in 2022, no member of the asian federation could host 2026 or 2030. or since russia hosted 2018, no uefa member could host 2022 or 2026
so as a result, since north america is hosting 2026 and countries from europe, africa, AND south america are hosting 2030, only countries from asia and oceania will be eligible to bid for 2034. i assume the bids for 2034 will be saudi arabia and australia, who are both (as @elishamanning reminded me) members of the asian federation. no matter which one gets it (cough probably saudi), 2038 will be interesting because then only north america and oceania will be able to bid, and there's not really an obvious country in there who could feasibly host besides the us, canada, or mexico, who are all hosting in 2026 and therefore probably won't want to do it again. tldr expect fifa to change their own rules when it is convenient for them (after 2034 has already been awarded to saudi)

DESN512 FORMATIVE PITCH DECK!
Introduction:
My name is Danica Petersen and I am a communication design student who has developed an interest in design since year 12 in high school. I first discovered the subject design through high school when I returned to Auckland in 2022 and was curious if that was where my potential career path lay. I often avoided art, however, in year 12, I found an interest in digital design. I never had a clear idea on what I wanted to pursue in the future with the fear of regret, yet I always felt passionate about expressing my thoughts and feelings through something creative. While growing up I moved around numerous times, mainly in the countries New Zealand, Australia and South Africa, therefore I struggled to feel at home. However, returning to Auckland allowed me to experiment and play with my feelings through design. Although I always felt like a beginner in the field of design, there was a moment during my last year of high school when I submitted a poster for a competition and received the merit award (second highest award). This achievement encouraged me to continue design in university. Therefore, while starting university i have started to consider what career to pursue. I would hope to do something in relation to designing products and promoting companies.
Rationale:
The posters ‘New Beginnings’ and ‘Freedom is Peace’ both reflect my lived experience in Aotearoa today. I have chosen to represent my posters on my lived experience in Aotearoa today through peace, freedom, and new beginnings. Personally, I have never truly felt freedom until I came to New Zealand. Having the feeling of freedom makes me feel safe, and therefore at peace. Coming to New Zealand not only exposed me to many opportunities but opened up many new beginnings through those opportunities, such as meeting new people and learning a different curriculum in school. Hence, I have dedicated these two posters on how New Zealand has impacted me positively. The poster ‘New Beginnings’ includes two pieces of typography which were handwritten by myself to reflect the curvy and flexible nature of trees. Moreover, an arrow is positioned in the centre of the poster to convey that there are multiple directions in life and thus, lead to multiple new beginnings. In the poster ‘Freedom of Peace’ I have designed the typography to appear as if it is breaking. This conveys the phrase ‘breaking free’, as the pieces of the text literally ‘break free’ from ‘freedom’. I have incorporated soft pastel colours to reflect the calm and peaceful feeling freedom presents.

A New High for the Indian Whiskies & Spirits Industry
A few years back, if you were offered an Indian whisky, at anyone`s residence, you may have felt offended, since the basic standard was a single malt or a premium blended whisky. Over the years things have changed quite interestingly & today Indian whiskies are not just being sought after but also being served with pride. Lot of new Brands have entered the mainstream Indian whisky market post the launch of the “First” global Indian whisky, Amrut in Glasgow in 2004.The response to Indian Single Malts has been very encouraging and the acceptance level by consumers across the world has been great.   Specially the malt connoisseurs, who are willing to experiment and try out the new world single malts.  “This augurs well not only for Indian Single Malts but also all new world whiskies. The world has taken notice of what is happening in the whisky world outside of Scotland and keen to support great quality malts that are being produced.  The standard Indian Whiskies (IMFL) continue to grow in traditional markets like Middle East and Africa.  We do hope that UK, EU and Australia will soon lift the non-tariff barriers on Indian Whiskies and give a big boost to exports of Indian Whiskies” avers, Sanjeev Banga, President – International Business Radico Khaitan Ltd.
India’s whisky Industry has been growing for over a decade, though in the last three years, the rise of Indian whisky brands has brought much recognition to the Indian whisky market. Indri Indian Single Malt Whisky has already bagged prestigious awards like International Spirits Challenge 2022 and is the only Indian Single malt to win a Gold Medal in the World Whisky category Single malt – no age statement category 2022.
According to Thiruvikram Nikam, JMD at Amrut Industries, “In the last few years there has been a constant increase of interest for Indian Whisky. We at Amrut are exceeding the demand expectations which can be considered a good response for Indian Whisky. To add to this, we are present in 55 countries and the response has been very encouraging. India`s huge demographic spread, coupled with exposure to various types of spirits, has led to increase in sales across different segments of spirits. In context to the improvement in sales of premium whiskies, in the last few years we have seen a very active interaction between the brand and consumers thereby increasing brand awareness, quality and so on. Social Media marketing has also played a major role in bringing the consumers to the brands”.  As they say, change is the only permanent thing. In that light, consumers trends and preferences keep evolving. Currently, there is a trend where the consumer is willing to try and appreciate a variety of spirits, including a surge in Indian Gins. One also senses a Rum boom in the coming years, with of course premium whiskies continuing to do better and dominating the figures. A good growth for Indian whiskies, not only in India but across the globe, is possible provided Indian Spirits maintain a good standard and disciple in manufacturing the produce.
“Despite the global pandemic and changing economic scenarios in the last three years, the Indian Spirits market has seen growth in its consumption. Due to the second wave, the alcohol Industry took a significant hit in the pandemic itself, but the government regulations on taxes helped drive sales still. We at Indri have seen that lot of people are experimenting with Premium Indian Single Malts in the past 2 years. The critical word here is an experiment. The Indian liquor industry has changed over the last three to four years. As demand for high-quality goods has increased, the Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated the trend, particularly in metropolitan areas. The dynamics, on the other hand, have changed. The changing drinking habits of the younger generation and the rising liquor industry in the Indian subcontinent have resulted in a significant shift in how individuals use alcohol.”, according to Praveen Malviya, President Piccadily Agro Industries Ltd.
Despite the pandemic and related restrictions, Indian beverage alcohol industry has also performed well in the last 3 years, in the domestic Industry.  It is heartening to note that the state governments have realized the significance of revenue generated by this industry and they are taking pragmatic steps to not only improve their revenue collections further but also to create a better environment for the industry as well as related players be it Retail, On Trade and Hospitality industry to function more efficiently and effectively. Premium and luxury category are growing at the fastest pace.  There are challenges due to global logistical issue on sourcing of some of the packaging material but hopefully things should settle down soon.
“During the pandemic, there was a drop in Spirit markets however certain segments showed remarkable resilience and growth despite the closure. Categories such as premium Whisky, Scotch Whisky bottled in India, Single Malts, etc continued to grow and have been leading in the recovery back to pre-pandemic volumes, while the overall spirits market declined in terms of volume growth. In India, rising affluence of Indian middle class with rising aspirations levels & increasing disposable income, the urban Indian consumer is seen to be globally aware and treats alcoholic beverages as any other beverage category, this leads to growing experimentation and thereby to the growth of premium whisky. Also this is the category where price laddering is available for the consumer to choose from for every occasion which allows for more experimentation.” According to Paul John, Chairman, John Distillery.
In recent times, India has become a game changer in Alcobev segment. Spirits like gin, vodka, rum, whisky (single malts and blended) and Indian agave have emerged as a strong portfolio, competing in the international market. Indian spirits are also been recognised globally. Though India is still a whisky market, in recent times good scope of Gin and Rum has ben witnessed. With new bartending schools in India, we also see a major shift in the bartending community who give an experience to customers with fresh flavours of Indian spirits.  With high engagement on social media, there is a faster knowledge transfer on methods or etiquette of drinking a particular spirit. Retailers are trending with new customer experience at the stores.
So where will we see significant growth in the Indian market, reaffirms Sanjeev Banga, “Innovation and experimentation will remain the key drivers of growth.  Whilst Indian Single Malts have a unique opportunity to showcase what India can offer to the world, at the same time we feel there are lot of local / regional spirit drinks that need to be brought forward and shared with the world.  Staying at home during the pandemic made lot of us experts in making cocktails, so DIY and premixes should also see growth in near future.”
Consumer trends too are changing & evolving In India. Drinking at home during the pandemic unshackled the taboo surrounding alcohol consumption in India.  Indians are drinking less but better. They no longer drink to get drunk but to enjoy the moment / occasion / togetherness. Also, Indians are well aware of the global trends and classic case is growing acceptance of Gin.  A category that was nonexistence till a few years ago is seeing lot of consumer interest and newer brands being launched at regular interval.  Following the global trends, we see Luxury Rum and Agave based spirits the next big thing.
Premium and luxury category are also growing at the fastest pace.  There are challenges due to global logistical issue on sourcing of some of the packaging material but hopefully things should settle down soon. Innovation and experimentation will remain the key drivers of growth.  Whilst Indian Single Malts have a unique opportunity to showcase what India can offer to the world, at the same time we feel there are lot of local / regional spirit drinks that need to be brought forward and shared with the world. Indians are drinking less but better. Following the global trends, one sees Luxury Rum and Agave based spirits the next big thing.
Ruchika Gupta, Marketing Director, Beam Suntory India – “We founded Oaksmith on some very solid foundations and Japanese principles of Gemba (or deep consumer insights) and monozukuri, our high quality techniques around purity, precision and process. It’s a blend by one of the finest in the blending world, gentleman behind iconic brands like Yamazaki Japanese Single Malt and Hibiki Japanese Blended – Shinji Fukuyo, from Suntory, epitomizing impeccable Japanese craftsmanship. Innovation seeped into everything we do for this brand, Oaksmith has rapidly expanded to almost all state markets. It’s been nothing short of a remarkable journey for Oaksmith to have gained consumer and industry recognition in such a short while. It strives to keep elevating the category as it moves forward.”
Today’s youth are seen to mature early, have more disposable incomes and different needs which have given rise to various consumption occasions. Awareness has increased, and experimentation & exploration have led to craft spirits and cocktails being the new trends. Riding the “ Premiumisation “wave, everyone is opting to go up the price ladder to find products better suited to their tastes. Also digital revolution has given brands a presence across social media as well. Craft Spirits, small batch, Single Malts especially with special finishes, Barrel Aged Rum & and Gins etc are the current flavours of the market and will definitely grow in next 3-5 years.
According to Jai Prakash Chopra, Co-founder of Spaceman Spirits Lab, which owns the Brand Samsara Gin, “I would say all categories have a bright future. There is innovation in every segment. But gin is picking up tremendously. We can see the sudden emerge of new Indian Gins and are doing well overseas too. It`s to early to comment on UK India FTA, but it is good to see many opportunities for both the countries for tie ups, ease of doing business and knowledge transfer. Maybe, this would equip us better to step up the product Outlook through innovative measures.  There is a lot of scope for Indian spirits as Indian consumers are not yet aware of the variety of spirits in international trade. With continuous tie ups with local international brands and innovations in packaging, India is an emerging marketplace.”
Indian single malt exports have grown at an average of 25% over the last 3 years and the biggest growth is seen from countries like USA, France, UK, Australia, UAE, Canada, Japan, as well as in Duty Free. New markets like Russia, Israel and Turkey are expected to see a healthy growth in the next few years.
The Indian spirits brands have been on a steady growth across the country and also across different price categories. Though with the FTA, it seems too early to comment in absence of complete information but if there is a drastic reduction in the duties, it may impact the sale of Indian produce, which may adversely affect all the stakeholders within the Indian spirit ecosystem.
UK is one of the biggest markets for Indian single malt brands. Exports to UK have been consistently growing at the rate of more than 10%. In India however the impact of UK India FTA will create challenges for Indian whiskies producers, especially premium Malt Whisky producers. The challenges are not due to quality, as Indian Whiskies are today at par with the best in the world, but rather due to the taxation in favour of imported brands. Beyond the state laws, there also remains the challenge of competing with Imported brands that can advertise globally and also reach Indian consumers online.
Over the last few years, there has been an engaging interaction between Brands & Consumers. Social Media marketing has also played a major role in bringing the consumers to the brands. Indian spirits have also been gaining global recognition primarily due to exceptionally good quality. Indian manufacturers have evolved to produce truly world class whiskies & Spirits and Indian consumers are also slowly accepting this and trying domestic spirits. The wide range of spirits that Indian manufacturers have created have convinced the world on the quality of Indian spirits. The category  has gained the confidence of the consumer and we expect this growth to continue and accelerate over the next few years as well.

Elaine Alsup, age 85, passed away peacefully on December 31, 2022, while undergoing hospice care. She was the daughter of William and Eileen Andrews, beloved wife to James Alsup, and mother to Andrew Alsup (wife Brendy) and Rebecca Lindblade (husband Chris). She was grandmother to Samuel Alsup, Rain Alsup, Grace Alsup, Katie Alsup, River Alsup, Trinity Alsup, Matthew Alsup, Noah Lindblade, Bria Lindblade, and Hannah Lindblade. In August 2022, Elaine was diagnosed with deep-vein thrombosis in both legs, which led to chronic pain that could not be resolved after extensive hospitalization in the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, AZ.
Ruth Elaine Alsup was born March 26, 1937, in Danville, Illinois, and was raised on a farm in West Lebanon, Indiana. She was the first born of three children and is survived by her brothers Donald Andrews and William G. Andrews. Elaine graduated from West Lebanon High School in 1955, and was awarded a BA degree in education from Bob Jones University in 1959.
Elaine taught school in Flint, Michigan in 1959-1960, in Hacienda Heights, California in 1960-1969, in Dakar, Senegal in 1965-1966, and in San Diego, California in 1987-2000. She taught mostly in the elementary grades, and especially liked teaching fifth grade.
Elaine married in 1968, moved from Glendora to San Diego in 1970, and became a full-time Mom in 1971 with the birth of Andrew. She was an active member of College Avenue Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, led Pioneer Girls, took part in Bible studies, and made many lifetime friends. She later continued her church activities at Legacy Church and Shadow Mountain Community Church in the San Diego area.
While single, Elaine spent a year teaching elementary grades at a missionary school in Senegal, the Dakar Academy. After retirement, Elaine led for many years a weekly after-school on-campus Bible club for elementary kids called Sonshine Club. She was passionate about leading kids to Christ, and kept a "Lambs Book of Life" notebook where the kids would write their names after they accepted Christ.
She delighted in her family, and was present at all her children's activities, including driving them to their many sports and musical interests. She continued this emphasis on family as her grandchildren were growing up. She also loved to travel, and joined with friends on several cruises, and with family on trips all over the US, Canada, Mexico, Central America, Middle East, Europe, Africa, and Australia.
Elaine was always lively in any group or setting -- witty, fun and pleasant. She enjoyed walking around the lake, and she loved reading Christian fiction. She always asked others about their lives and interests. She was a devoted consumer of Starbucks chai tea latte. She loved to laugh and tease and make life interesting. Elaine is loved and cherished by her friends and family and will be forever missed by all who knew her. Her last two words were "I sing", which she sang as an intro to the chorus "I sing because I'm happy, I sing because I'm free; for His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me."

Saudi Arabia virtually secures 2034 World Cup bid, likely to be held in winter again
Tumblr media
Saudi Arabia is set to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
Saudi Arabia has been awarded the 2034 Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup.
"The 2034 World Cup will be held in Asia (Saudi Arabia)," FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced on social media on Monday (June 1). "The FIFA Council has decided on the hosts for 2026, 2030 and 2034."
The 2026 World Cup will be held in North and Central America (United States, Canada and Mexico), while the 2030 World Cup will be held in Europe and Africa (co-hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco). In addition, the 2030 World Cup will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the World Cup and will include a few matches in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay, where the first World Cup was held.
In keeping with FIFA's regional alignment, the 2034 World Cup was expected to take place in either Asia or Oceania. As such, a two-horse race was expected, with Saudi Arabia hosting the tournament and Australia and Indonesia bidding to co-host.
However, on October 18, Indonesia announced its support for Saudi Arabia. Australia then withdrew its bid on Oct. 30.
The deadline for submitting an expression of interest for the 2034 World Cup is Oct. 30, but with competitors dropping out, Saudi Arabia is likely to win the bid with time to spare. FIFA is expected to officially announce Saudi Arabia as the 2034 World Cup host in December.
If Saudi Arabia hosts, the 2034 World Cup is expected to be played in November and December, just like the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
"The average temperature in Saudi Arabia in June and July is 37 to 38 degrees, rising to a high of 41 degrees," said L'Equipe, a French media outlet, adding, "Following Qatar, the World Cup will once again be held in winter." 슬롯

Now it's time for my own Festival ideas! And as I have World Cup fever I have taken inspiration from the beautiful game! May I introduce World Film Festi! My venues would be the biggest and best sports stadiums in the world - one from each continent. For example, Mercedes Benz Stadium, United States, North America
Narendra Modi Stadium, India, Asia
FNB Stadium, South Africa, Africa
Estadio Alberto J. Armando, Argentina, South America
Stadium Australia, Australia, Australia
Wembley, England, Europe
And I am still awaiting planning permission in Antartica
But the point is to have a showcase in each continent so the entire world can enjoy! With huge capacity stadiums huge numbers of cinephiles can come to enjoy. Due to the venues being purpose built stadiums, tickets would range from regular seating to exclusive (VIP) private boxes meaning each venue can accommodate all. The Mercedes Benz stadium is estimated to earn ticket sales of up to 5 million dollars at full capacity but how do we fill seats? What is our unique selling point? I would advertise for sponsorship deals with technology brands to provide cinema screens, speakers etc at a discounted rate for advertisement. Furthermore, pop-up stalls could occupy the outsides of stadiums for a percentage of profits. This sponsorship, along with huge ticket sales would hopefully grant a massive budget for entertaining the crem de la crem of the film industry. ON THE MOST PART the festival would include films (obviously) as voted by from a selection by ticket holders but would also include live band performances, meet the director/cast, half time music performances (as relevant to film) etc. I'm thinking red carpets with top celebrities and showcasing all the award winning films with all the award winning actors and directors. I would also implement a half time show as music is a key element to film where soundtracks would be performed. For example Top Dawg Entity performing the Black Panther soundtrack with hit songs such as 'all the stars' and 'X'. Overall, I would do my upmost best to make a film festival bigger and more spectacular than ever.
