Multiverse War Part 8
(Continued from here on @formerchaoslord )
Tumblr media
"Teseo, Analogman, the new recruit we seek is a very powerful and very dangerous individual... Although, it may be more accurate to say he is two individuals at the same time. A fusion of two beings..."
Tumblr media
"A fusion, you say? Similar to DNA Digivolving? These two beings merged into an even more powerful being?"
"Yes. That's the idea," Slur said, "But they not only fused themselves together; They also fused their universes together, creating what could be considered a Paradox Dimension... Maybe Artificial Paradox Dimension is a more accurate term since it didn't spawn naturally..."
Tumblr media
"So... Are we supposed to, like, pretend we know what a Paradox Dimension is, or are you going to explain it to us?"
"Of course, your primitive mind wouldn't know what that is..." Slur was a bit annoyed by Teseo's lack of knowledge, despite not being surprised, "To put it simply, a Paradox Dimension is a dimension that combines two or more worlds into one and making it it's own unique world. For example, if we ever find a dimension where Adepts like you and Digimon like Analogman's Chaosdramon body coexist, that would be a Paradox Dimension. Understand now?"
"So it's pretty much a giant Fanfic Dimension. #CHEESY!🧀 BUT SWEET!🍬"
"...Sure, whatever," Slur didn't feel like elaborating any further, "This being you must find is known as Ultron Sigma. They were two of the most powerful robots who were also computer viruses. When they met each other, they fuse themselves and their worlds together. I'm sending you to the branched timeline where he successfully ruled his new Paradox Dimension. Someone like him will be essential to our team... But as I said before, recruiting him will not be easy. That's where your hacking skills will come in. But I fear with someone like Ultron Sigma, that alone will be insufficient. That's why I have Obake on standby. He has a chip that will reprogram him. While you two hold him back with your hacking and create an opening for him, Obake will place the chip into Ultron Sigma. And if you have any trouble, Obake, hopefully Nega and Dr. Starline will arrive on time to lend you a hand."
Tumblr media
"Dr. Starline...? Oh, yes, the other new recruit you sent Nega to fetch. I have full confidence in my abilities, but I appreciate that you will have very capable geniuses working with me. I do hope this Starline is as promising as Nega is."
"Believe me, Starline is brilliant. Nega still surpasses him in many aspects, but with you three working together, the possibilities are endless. I promise you that."
"Interesting," Obake said with a smile, "In that case, I look forward to working with this man..."
"Platypus," Slur corrected him, "Like Scourge and Rosy, Dr. Starline is a Mobian."
"Makes no difference to me, so long as he has potential," Obake said.
"Before you two go," Slur said, "Do you two remember the Anti-Virus I asked you to create?"
"Sure did!" Teseo said, "Making it was a snap!"
"It was like no ordinary Anti-Virus, though," said Analogman, "In fact, the virus itself was unusual. It could turn organics into robotic beings. That is almost like when I used the BH Virus to force Digimon into Digivolving into Machinedramon... Only this is a real world virus. It would be beneficial if wehad that kind of power at our disposal, but very problematic if something like that was used against us."
"Precisely why I this Anti-Virus needed to be made," said Slur, "That kind of power is far too dangerous to fight head-on. That's why we all need to be immune and place the chip Obake made inside him. Not only will it take away his ability to use the virus; it will also make Ultron Sigma completely loyal to Obake."
"I must say," Obake said, "I'm quite surprised you'd allow me to have such a powerful being become my loyal henchman. Wouldn't you prefer he be loyal to you?"
"Well, Obake," said Slur, "Unlike the members who have access to their armies, you do not have that kind of access. You have that brilliant mind, but no army to command. So I feel having you take control of Ultron Sigma and his army of lesser Ultrons and Mavericks would make up for that."
Obake smirked. Despite the fact that due to being supervised by Slur when creating the chip that he couldn't create something that would give him full control of the virus, therefore giving him a big advantage in overthrowing Slur and ruling the Multiverse himself... And perhaps taking Nega and possibly Starline with him since they had potential to do great things together, this was still a huge plus. Having control over an army this powerful, and it's leader being one of the most power entities in the entire Multiverse, he no longer felt like a was at the bottom anymore. Brilliant as he is, he didn't stand a chance against even the childish Teseo with his limited resources.
"Thank you, Slur," Obake said, bowing like a gentleman, "I am very grateful for this."
He knew one day he would rise up and take control... But due to this gift he'll be receiving from Slur, he's actually considering returning the favor somehow. After all, despite knowing there could only be one ruler in the end, he did get along with Slur well since they had a similar way of thinking.
"Don't thank me yet," Slur said, "Wait until you actually have Ultron Sigma under your control. Remember, this mission will not be easy. We can expect he will fight back. And I'm sure he's smart enough to know we'll try to reprogram him. It'll be tough having a Mega Level Digimon, and a powerful Adept to hold him down. Just imagine how difficult it will be for a man with no superpowers to get close to him.
The two hackers were sent to the Paradox Dimension where Ultron Sigma ruled. It was truly overrun with robots and Mavericks, and from what Slur mentioned before, some of these robots were once human until they were hit with the Ultron Sigma Virus.
"It's a good thing we've taken the vaccine," Tesseo said nervously, "I wouldn't want to end up like them..."
"I agree..." said Analogman, "Despite being in this Chaosdramon body, the virus probably wouldn't stop me from turning into a loyal Maverick if I got infected..."
Some of the robots noticed the two, and rushed towards them. After getting close enough, they were prepared to attack.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" Teseo said, "Chillax, guys. We're not here to fight. We just want an audience with your leader."
The two robots looked at each other, and then back at Teseo and Analogman.
"...VERY WELL," one of them said, "FOLLOW US."
It was no surprise that Ultron Sigma would be in the giant castle-like building. Things were starting off pretty easy so far, but both Teseo and Analogman knew they had to be on their guard. Ultron Sigma would be their most dangerous member to recruit yet.
The two finally stood before their target. His presence alone was pretty intimidating.
Tumblr media
"So... You are the ones my henchman told me about. You're the first to actually request in audience peacefully. I will give you this time. Speak."
Analogman spoke up rather quickly.
"Ultron Sigma... We come from different dimensions, and have formed a team to rule the Multiverse..."
"I'm aware of the Multiverse." Ultron Sigma said, "My world is literally a combination of many."
"Gotta say, that's really awesome, dude!" Teseo blurted out.
"Teseo, pipe down!" Analogman scolded, "The adults are talking."
Analogman cleared his throat before he continued.
"Our leader, Slur, is very impressed with your abilities, and wanted to recruit you. Together, we can rule the Multiverse!"
"I see..." Ultron Sigma said, "Yes, I can see why your leader would need me. I was able to murge the worlds with the Infinty Stones. However, I was given the information that these stones don't work in every dimension, which is why I could not merge every single dimension together. Am I correct to assume these stones will be useless pebbles if I were to cross over to your leader's domain?"
"I believe so..." Analogman answered, "Slur did mention one time in a meeting that because the stones don't work in every dimension, they were unreliable. That's why she's seeking a power that's even greater that can work in every dimension..."
"That kind of power would be nice to have. It would seem I will be in need of your resources."
"So you'll join us then?!" Teseo said excitedly, "Great! That was easier than I thought..."
"You misunderstand," said Ultron Sigma, "I am in the need of your resources, but I DON'T need YOU. Or your Leader, Slum."
"It's Slur," Analogman corrected.
"Whatever," said Ultron Sigma, "My ideal universe is one without organic life. And seeing as how that child seems to be an organic beeing, it would mean teaming up with organics. And since it seems I can't seem to infect you with my virus, I can assume you created a vaccine that negates it. I can't have that. So no, I won't be JOINING you. Instead, I will be taking your resources for myself. The entire Multiverse will belong to Ultron Sigma, and no other!"
"With all due respect," Analogman said, "Slur did warn us that you would most likely not cooperate."
"Your point?" Ultron Sigma said, probably raising an eyebrow if he had any and if his face could show emotions.
"Point is," Teseo said, "It would be really stupid if we didn't have a backup plan!"
The two hackers immediately began the hacking progress. Ultron Sigma was actually caught of guard, but a powerful being like him was able to resist it. However, he could tell he couldn't resist it forever, judging from his slowed movement and his sudden stuttering. He had to destroy these two before they could convert him.
"Mav... Ericks.... Ultron... Soldiers... Attack...!!"
Despite his broken sentence, Ultron Sigma's soldiers followed his command.
"Keep the soldiers busy, Machinedramon!" Analogman cried out.
Tumblr media
Coming from dimensional rifts created by Slur once she got the signal, an army of Machinedramon came and attacked the Mavericks and Ultron Soldiers. They seemed to be evenly matched.
"I... Will not... Yield...!!"
Ultron Sigma, for the first time in awhile, began to feel desperate. It seems these two already thought everything out. It has his own foolishness for both underestimating them and believing they didn't have an army on standby. What's worse, he began feeling his control dwindling. He had to do something...
"Now's your chance, Obake!" Analogman said, "Hurry up and put the chip in him! This guy's really strong!"
On cue, Obake came out of another dimensional rift, sporting a sinister grin as he came out.
"Don't worry," he said, "This won't hurt a bit. It will just make you more loyal. Specifically to me."
Ultron Sigma, loyal to a meatbag?! Never! He could not allow that to happen! Despite the hacking slowing him down, the Maverick robot fusion became even more aggressive, enough so that Obake couldn't get close.
"Well, you're a stubborn one, aren't you?" Obake rhetorically asked, "Looks like we'll need more help..."
The super villain then turned to the Mega Level Digimon.
"Analogman. Do you have a spare Machinedramon to fight Ultron Sigma and pin him down?"
"I'm afraid not," Analogman answered, "They're all taking care of Ultron Sigma's army!"
"And we have to put our full concentration in hacking this guy!" Teseo added.
"Very well," Obake answered, "You two power up and continue hacking. I'll see if Slur can send Nega and Starline over. They should have arrived by now."
Obake made the call, and unfortunately, it seems they haven't arrived just yet.
"I'll see what's holding them," Slur said on the communicator, "Try to hold him off as long as you can in the meantime."
At that moment, the two hackers powered up.
Tumblr media
Teseo entered his Armored Phenomenon,
Tumblr media
While Analogman activated the X-Antibodies, transforming him into a Chaosdramon X.
Although there was signs of more struggling, Ultron Sigma continued to resist. He could not allow an organic to control him.
...
Meanwhile, back at HQ, Slur called Nega on the communicator. It took a few minutes, but Nega finally picked up.
“Nega! What’s taking you so long?!" Slur immediately shouted, "Did you get Starline to join us?”
“Yes, Lady Slur,” Nega answered on the communicator, “We just had a run in with some of our adversaries is all.”
“Well, put it on hold. The time will come to destroy them. But right now, we need you and Starline over here! The other recruit isn’t cooperating! Teseo and Analogman’s hacking is keeping him under control for now, but his resistance is strong! Obake will need your help in reprogramming him!”
“Very well,” said Nega, “We’ll be right there.”
After a few minutes, Nega and Starline appeared through dimensional rifts.
Tumblr media
"Greetings, Lady Slur. It's a pleasure to finally meet you in person..."
"Save the formalities for later," Slur said, "Right now, have your armies help Obake. He needs to get that chip into Ultron Sigma if we want him to be our ally. With your armies combined, you can outnumber the Mavericks and Ultron Soldiers!"
Tumblr media
"As you wish. Starline, let's show that Maverick that we have the superior robot army!"
"Absolutely!" Starline said.
The two evil genius went through the rift to meet up with Obake and the hackers, their armies following them.
"You came just in time, Nega," Obake said, "And I assume you are Dr. Starline. Slur told me great things about you. Do not disappoint."
"Oh, believe me," Starline said, "You won't be disappointed."
With the combined forces of Starline and Nega's robots, the Mavericks and Ultron Soldiers began to become overwhelmed. Even so, as weakened as Ultron Sigma was now, all it took was Metal Knuckles to pin the Fused Maverick Overlord to the ground.
"It's all up to you now, Obake," Nega said with a gentleman bow.
"Many thanks, Nega," Obake said before approaching Ultron Sigma, "You put up quite a fight, my friend. I respect your strength. But now, that strength will belong to me."
Obake installed the chip into the Fused Maverick Overlord afterwards.
"GRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!"
Ultron Sigma let out a shriek as he felt his free will melting away. Even now, he tried to resist, but was too weak to even go up against the much shorter Metal Knuckles.
No... This can't be... I can't be controlled by an organic... I can't let him rule over me... I must fight... I must fight... I must...
Soon, it seemed Ultron Sigma stopped resisting. Seeing this, Starline commanded Metal Knuckles to let him go. Afterwards, the Fused Maverick Overlord slowly got up.
"Soldiers, Mavericks... Ceasefire!"
The Mavericks and Ultron Soldiers obeyed. Ultron Sigma then looked directly at Obake... Before bowing to him.
"Your orders, Master Obake," he said.
A large sinister grin appeared on Obake's face the moment he heard that. He let out a satisfied chuckle.
"For now, you and your army return with us to the Dreadnought. We have much to discuss about ruling the Multiverse."
"Yes, master," Ultron Sigma said, before commanding his army, "You heard Master Obake! My master is YOUR master as well. We follow him to the Dreadnought! Understood?"
"UNDERSTOOD, LORD ULTRON SIGMA!" the Mavericks and Ultron Soldiers answered.
"Phew... That was intense..." Teseo said, "I couldn't break my concentration once for that guy. That was no fun... I like it better when I can multitask hacking and playing videogames..."
"Enough complaining, Teseo," said Obake, "Let's get back to HQ and meet with Slur. We have a lot more work to do."
Slur's team now had a very powerful member join them. Will RiFT and his team be able to win against such a being?
To be continued...

Other than Seer/Wraith, what other Apex ships are your jam? I'm very curious!
Seer/Wraith is fun but tbh not a “jam” persay, but flattered you asked! Big Jams incoming~
(these are in no order whatsoever, I like some more than others, some barely qualified as a jam but you know, jam is jam)
-Mirage/Hound, Miragehound, is an OG fave of mine, I think I was (am?) one of the more prolific miragehound writers. Love them still. Like many, big factor is the seen/unseen aspect and that they each fill holes the other has.
-Horizon/Bangalore, Horizonlore, came to me in S7 with help of my friend and is one of my more active ships I fuckin' love. Mary deserves love and so does GrumpyLore.
-Horizon/Bloodhound, Horizonhound, it’s good shit. Gay as fuck. Valid as hell. I have a very long fanfiction that is ALMOST done but I kinda had to abandon it a-while back. Might try and finish it up and publish it though it’d be out of date with the seasons we’re in lmao.
-Crypto/Wraith, Cryptaith, this ship is like my main underground jam. I love it, I think it has a lot of potential and is a far “quieter” ship than a lot of the other ones. Two melancholy people trying their best to become themselves again who are also huge meganerds There is basically zero content for this besides a one-shot I made for it last I checked, which is personally a shame. But they live in my head rent free.
-Loba/Octane, Lobatane, this isn’t as big for me as it used to be but I find it fun, basically a crackship. The fact they canonly work together/are friends (lorebook) helped lmao. I like the opposites attract dynamic. And I like the idea of making fun of Loba for liking twinks.
-Lifeline/Rampart, Rampline, lookit these lil’ lesbians. I love them. Soft. Chaotic. Dangerous. I think Lifeline needs someone a little chaotic like Octane but unlike Octane, Rampart is actually pretty chill off-field. I just feel they really match each other’s energy, just at different angles.
-Wattson/Mirage, Wattage, my friend got me into this one. They both like puns. Massive dorks. Might have a rocky start but I think as they get into it they’d grow together.
-Loba/Bangalore, Lobalore, I didn’t really like them until more recently. They’re my go-to “if they’re gonna actually put a canon relationship in Apex, this is the best one they could do”, and honestly I mostly like them in art and canon, but they are really fucking good. I think they have good chemistry, and obviously there is interest on Loba’s part, and this is my personal musing regarding canon, I think Bangalore is also interested, but not immediately. She has her brother to find; Loba has issues with Rev but she’s found him and exacted most of her revenge, so she’s ready to move on where Bangalore can’t yet. Once that changes, I think they could meld well.
-Fuse/Bloodhound, Fusehound, yeah I’ve fallen down the same hill everyone else has. Truthfully I think BH just needs a friend, but like Lobalore they have really good chemistry because of this. Fuse pulls them out of their shell, BH makes him realize/confront that he has his own issues (ex. Maggie’s suicide) and I think they both like to party.
Also, Fuse is a DILF and BH has a type don’t @ me.

6, 8, and 16 Alliance asks, please 😉
6) Are there any NPC’s from the class stories you’d like to see/HC join the Alliance? Ex: Master Timmns, Ardun Kothe, Watcher One, etc
Jonas Fucking Balkar. He should be a full romance option for Troopers and I will die on this hill.
Also, Fuse! He should have played a role in later chapters of the Trooper story if you saved him, and he definitely joins Ves's Alliance. I also like to think he helps Havoc out during the years she's in carbonite.
I wish they hadn't killed off Crysta during SoR and that she and her daughter could have joined the Alliance. I headcanon that more Mando'ade than just Torian join up (Clan Ordo, at the very least, since they have an established history with Torian and the BH)
I wish Master Orgus's Force Ghost had stuck around to just annoy the hell out of Valkorian. Just the idea of Valk being constantly Statler-and-Waldorf'd by a dead Jedi Master is hilarious to me.
Trooper and BH are the only classes I've finished all the way through (so far), so I may have more to add to this in the future ;)
Also, I headcanon that both Vette and Torian are saved because I hate Bioware's obsession with "choose which beloved companion will die". Ves saves Torian while Kade saves Vette and Marii helps Arcann and Senya protect the Gravestone and everyone wins.
8) Are any of your other OC’s part of the Alliance? If yes what do they do for the Alliance? Do they get along with your Commander?
My "canon" Commander is Vesiya Hallis Jorgan (Colonel Jorgan, officially, but she doesn't use her rank anymore. f!Trooper, Medic Commando, mostly LS), but I've really enjoyed adding the others to her story in a non-Commander capacity. I like the idea of having a complete set of all of them working together eventually.
Marii Shan (former Jedi Battlemaster Aramarii Wrinn. f!Jedi Knight, Watchman Sentinel, mostly LS) is a really good combat tactician and an equally good spy. During the five years Ves is in carbonite, she gets a reputation as a terrorist among Arcann's forces for saving rebels and dissidents from his wrath. Once she officially joins the Alliance, she is Theron's favorite lead scout, she goes behind enemy lines for recon missions. Briefly, during the Order of Zildrog business, she's promoted to Spymaster, until her then-boyfriend (now husband) comes home.
Kade Mithal of Clan Cadera (f!Bounty Hunter, Bodyguard Mercenary OR Pyrotech Powertech (both, really, because I've never been able to choose), full LS) joins when Torian does. They're a team and she goes where he goes, no matter what. She's a very good bounty hunter. If you need someone found, she's your girl. I'm fairly certain she's the one who found where Ves was being held so Lana could rescue her.
I'm pretty sure Riykas (Jedi Shadow, full LS) and Jayce (Sith Juggernaut, full LS) join Ves's Alliance too, but I haven't decided in what capacity yet.
Ves and Marii become really good friends during the Revan business, and that continues once Marii joins the Alliance. They work well together and balance each other out. Really, the Jorgans and Shans in general get along well. Also, the two of them teaming up has got to be terrifying for Valk personally because they are the two biggest pains in his ass in the whole galaxy.
Ves and Kade have a lot of respect for each other, though they don't spend much time together outside of work until after Ves saves Torian during Vaylin's assault on Odessen. After that, Ves is as good as family as far as Kade is concerned, and she is an unofficial part of their clan.
Marii and Kade get along surprisingly well, considering the animosity between Jedi and Mandalorians. They have a bit of a playful rivalry, but trust each other completely when the shit hits the fan (which it often does). When one of Kade and Torian's daughters ends up Force Sensitive, Marii offers to train her.
16) From our OC’s point of view, SoR -> KotET wasn’t a fun experience, did they develop any fears as a result?
Ves is scared of carbonite stasis, and will absolutely fight to the death before ever being put in it again. She still sometimes wakes up from nightmares with psychosomatic stasis-blindness, and on really bad days has to remind herself that she isn't just having a very detailed coma dream.
Marii would never ever admit it, but she's scared of Valkorian getting in her head again. It's happened twice now (once during the JK story, once on Ziost), and she's not sure she'll be able to break free if it happens a third time. She stays behind when everyone else goes to free Satele from Valk's plague, even though her connection to Kira and Scourge would have probably protected her. Just in case.
I don't think Kade fears anything lmao

Hide and Seek
Summary: Clemencia wants to play a game of hide and seek. It only makes sense that the lord of darkness wishes to partake…what could go wrong with that?
Words: 1080
Characters: Clemencia and Black Hat (duh XP)
Warnings: Mentioning of violence.
Wrote this for @amarynthian-fortress. For being a really awesome friend and dealing with my shizz. Anyway, hope you enjoy! Also, I wrote this extremely late at night, so sorry for any errors. I’m too tired to change them.
~~~
Hide and seek was one of Clemencia’s favorite games that she loved to play with pretty much anyone that was willing, or even unwilling, to partake in such seemingly childish game. However, sometimes the unicorn witch would love to add a little stake to the game or a form of consequence. If the participant was unwilling, then their consequence to being found was getting their face caved in by a sparkly mallet or even getting each finger broken and hearing each tiny, cute crackle. If the participant was willing, then they both got to choose what happens to the loser.
So, when Clem found out that the only person she could play with was Black Hat- due to Dem and Slug having alone time together and Fug and White Hat were either killing animals or going at it hard and rough in the bedroom -she was a little…nervous. The man had never been one for her more childish games. Granted, they did sit and cuddle together during quiet, solitary moments and he did mess or braid her hair when he believed she was asleep, but…the eldritch still never cared for her unicorn games. So, it was quite a shock to Clemencia when Black had said yes to the game, even wanting to keep their consequences a secret, until she was found. It made her wonder what the eldritch had in store. Nevertheless, that didn’t stop the eccentric witch from vibrating in pure excitement as she poofed away.
Why does Clemencia only get to hide and not the other player? Well, the better question would be: How is this big poof ball of pink and blue supposed to hide in a mansion that’s mainly black and red? …Carefully and cutely.
Clemencia giggled as she watched shadowy tentacles crawl along the walls and eyes on portraits move oh-so subtly, searching for even the slightest bit of movement. She currently was hiding within an armoire that was in one of the many guest rooms in Black’s home. She cautiously took a peek out from a crack between the doors, but stopped when the door lightly creaked and a few shadow tentacles suddenly halted in their movements. The unicorn witch made a little “meep” sound and quickly teleported outside into the halls.
Unfortunately for the little unicorn, the moment that she used her magic and was within the halls, the many paintings of BH all instantly looked to her. Shadows once again crept along the wall, writhing in pure anticipation and thrill for a swift, sweet capture, while the paintings spoke with a dark, carnal purr, “Well,well, well, what has the little princess gotten herself into? Rather unwise of you to place yourself in corner~”
The eyes on the painting the slowly and creepily shifted back to their lifeless positions as the shadows on the wall quickly compiled right in front of Clemencia. The shadows wriggled and pulsated as they melded into a gooey, bubbly substance that shifted into other colors like red. It wasn’t long before the tall, unearthly creature himself appeared before Clem. Black Hat grinned down at the calmly blinking unicorn witch as she innocently tilted her head. He cooed, “It appears that I have won the game, haven’t I?”
Clemencia then stopped blinking as she exclaimed, “Huh? Nnnnooooo! You still gotta catch me first, silly!”
She then giggled before suddenly disappearing and leaving behind a small pile of sparkles and streamers. Instead of normally becoming annoyed or disgusted by such cuteness, Black Hat just chuckled at such an act, finding it amusing, and simply transformed his legs to slimy, grotesque, eye-filled tentacles before charging down the hall after Clem.
Clem giggled happily as she skipped down the hall, creating “boing” noises to go with her hopping somehow, and looked back behind her, seeing nothing but empty hallway behind her. Although, she knew that he was behind her and was possibly pretending to not be close to her just to scare her. Luckily, she found his scares more adorable than horrifying, so this just made the witch even more excited that it caused her to glow with magic. Before she could do anything, Clemencia ended up teleporting to a random part of the house.
The unicorn witch looked around and saw that it was just an ordinary living room, but with no Black Hat around or any paintings. Clem cheered victoriously, thinking that she had won, even started changing the furniture to much cuter, pastel versions to fit her tea party. Unfortunately, somewhat,while she was busy, she didn’t notice shadows slithering into the room, hiding within the darkness. They all crept up to the unsuspecting little unicorn and slowly wrapped up one leg. Clemencia hummed at the feeling of coldness on one of her legs and the moment she looked down, the shadows shot up and quickly wrapped themselves around the unicorn witch.
Clem tried to struggle and get out of the shadows, but their texture was too viscous to break through. When they had encased her body, Black Hat appeared from the miry muck, walked onto the shadows over to Clemencia, and then tapped her horn, smiling, “You lose.”
Clemencia blinked before blowing a raspberry at him.
Black Hat just chuckled before snapping his fingers and the room went back to normal. Before Clem could fall to the ground, Black wrapped his arms around her and slowly floated to the floor, giving her a kiss on her forehead. She pouted, crossing her arms, “Well…you won. What do you want to do with me?”
Black hummed as he continued carrying her, “Well…I had been thinking about what to do with you, trying to wonder what would cause your skin to crawl. However, I then thought about something that could benefit both of us. You and I, sitting on top of my manor, while we watch one of your party bombs explode in random houses and watch everyone run around in a literal blind panic from the shards of disco balls in their eyes!” He cackled at the very thought before asking, “What do you say?”
Clem’s eyes sparkled before she gave him a peck on the cheek, giggling, “You had me at “You and I”.”
The eldritch blush a soft green before coughing at the moment, pretending as if he were unaffected, and then teleported the two of them away. This was the best game of hide and seek Clem will ever have!
Fullmetal Alchemist OG vs. Brotherhood: Tucker Chapter (OG 07, BH 04)
We’ve caught up to Brotherhood’s timeline! This isn’t quite a 1:1 comparison, as some of the introductory bits were covered in OG 06, but for the most part we should be able to compare the two episodes directly.
Fullmetal Alchemist Episode 7: "Night of the Chimera's Cry"
Ed is now a "dog of the military" for having passed the state alchemy examination. Mustang gives Ed a silver pocket watch, being a symbol of his rank and an alchemical amplifier. Ed writes a letter to Winry, and Nina writes one to her mother. After Tucker's reluctance in answering Ed's questions concerning the talking chimera that he created two years ago, Ed investigates at the state library but is denied access. On the way out of the library, Ed encounters a mysterious man with a cross-shaped scar across his face, and a strange tattoo on his right arm. After Brigadier General Basque Grand finds out about Ed's investigations, he orders him to cease and desist, having the Elrics moving out of Tucker's mansion. However, the Elrics sneak into the mansion into Tucker's laboratory in the basement, where he has just finished creating another speaking chimera in order to satisfy his yearly examination requirements. Ed then verbally places the pieces of the puzzle together, revealing that Tucker was responsible for using his wife for his first chimera, and now he is using Nina and Alexander for his new chimera. Tucker tries to accuse Ed that he is guilty of this as well, and Ed nearly beats Tucker to death in response, though is stopped by the Nina-Alexander chimera. As Tucker is arrested, Ed manages to free the chimera, which escapes into an alleyway and encounters the scarred man. He declares it to be a sin against nature, and ultimately deconstructs it. The scarred man disappears, and the Elrics discover Nina-Alexander's blood-smeared remains on the alley wall.
Tucker watches Nina play in the yard with an anguished expression.
Mustang tosses Ed his State Alchemist watch quite callously, and Ed is disappointed.
MUSTANG: Congrats. You're a dog of the military now.
Nothing about it letting you do alchemy without a circle, so I guess we’re left to assume Cornello just didn’t know what he was talking about.
Ed makes a crack about Mustang wanting a promotion, and Havoc tells him seriously that yes, he'll do anything to move up the ranks. Foreshadowing.
There is a serial killer targeting women.
Havoc reminds Tucker his assessment is coming up soon. Tucker looks nervous.
Tucker claims that his wife left them because he was too poor, and that if he fails the examination, they'll fall into poverty again.
Ed restrains Scar from entering the library, saying he needs to pass the exam like everyone else. As a kid, I think this is more excusable from him.
Ed goes to Hughes when he's denied access, because Hughes said he was in intelligence last episode. Oh, that's clever! Hughes tells him Tucker's chimera said it wanted to die and then starved itself to death. He also reveals Tucker's wife is actually dead.
Ed has a PTSD attack when he sees the woman's mangled body. When he recovers, Tucker explains that he figured out that they did human transmutation, but he understands their reasons.
Tucker's lab looks like a torture dungeon. Everything is very poorly lit.
Tucker claims the real reason he fused Nina was to prove that he could, and insists that Ed's attempt at human transmutation was no different. Ed flies into a rage, beating him so savagely he draws blood. Nina stops him, and Ed attempts to separate her. I think this is a really important part of Ed's character: he's a very dark and flawed person, but at his core he really is a genuinely good person, and it's vital he gets opportunities to show that.
Ed flips out at Grand, accusing him of covering it up and planning to use Nina as a test subject. Grand punches him, and Ed visibly staggers and clutches his stomach for the rest of the scene. Ed uses alchemy to warp the road and topple the van.
Scar has not yet started killing State Alchemists. He's still figuring out how his arm works and what he's supposed to use it for.
Ed has a breakdown when he finds Nina's bloodstain, and actually cries.
FMA Brotherhood Episode 4: "An Alchemist's Anguish"
A mysterious man with a cross-shaped scar across his face attacks and murders Brigadier General Basque Grand. The Führer orders Hughes and Armstrong to use all available resources to stop the murderer. Meanwhile, to avoid being in their debt, Mustang introduces Edward and Alphonse to state alchemist Shou Tucker, the "Sewing-Life Alchemist", who obtained his credentials by creating a chimera which could understand human speech. He opens up his library to the Elric brothers to study living creature transmutation, but they also spend time playing with Tucker's daughter Nina and the family dog Alexander. On returning to the house for another study session, they find that Tucker has created another speaking chimera in order to satisfy his yearly assessment requirements. However, Edward is furious to discover that the chimera was created by combining Nina and Alexander. He then realizes that Tucker did the same with his wife two years earlier and Alphonse stops Edward from nearly beating Tucker to death. Mustang tells him that by being a state alchemist, he must prepare himself to take a life if called upon by the military. While Tucker is arrested for his actions, he is visited by the scarred man, who kills him, and then delivers a mercy killing to the Nina/Alexander chimera.
We get a recap of the previous episode before the title card. Not sure why it thinks this is necessary.
We open with Scar already killing State Alchemists. Grand makes cannons out of the cobblestones. As with Ed's train cannon, I have to wonder where he's getting the gunpowder – though since this is his specialty, he might carry the materials on his person.
Grand also raises massive metal walls from the road. We can presume he is drawing metal ore from the rock, but he's still making an awful lot of metal.
And Scar just... kills Grand. Okay. Well, that was a waste of a character.
There's a lot of blood spurting when Scar kills Grand, but no visible wounds. I was expecting his head to explode at least.
Then we cut to Team Mustang doing clerical work. There's a report on Yoki and a reference to the Youswell incident, but no details beyond that the Elrics were involved. So I guess Brotherhood wants to assure us that's still canon, but didn't think it was important enough to spend an episode on. Reasonable.
Ed groans when he hears he has to meet with Mustang. It hasn't been established why he hates him yet, so that's a little weird. I guess we can take it as an in-medias-res thing, to be explained later.
The hook to make them meet Tucker here is that they start going on about how impressive it was that Cornello made a chimera with the Stone, and that they don't know much about biological alchemy. That seems… really random. That was hardly the most impressive or even the most visible thing he did with the Stone. It's reasonable for them to take an interest in it, but that just highlights that it should have been the first thing they researched when they got to Central. It's really bizarre that the people looking to restore their bodies completely ignored an entire field about that for three years and only now go "Oh hey, actually that sounds useful."
Mustang is referring them so he's not indebted to them for handling the Liore case. So apparently they actually were on military business there.
Mustang tells them the story of the talking chimera in place of Hughes, on the ride over there. Okay wow, so we are really speedrunning this then. What is pacing.
Tucker doesn't apologize for being sexist, and more directly says his wife ran out on him when explaining the mess in the house. Possibly this is just different translations?
Tucker is a lot more aggressive, demanding that they tell him why they're interested before he shows them his research. Goes into scary shiny glasses mode when he says this. Ed tells him everything.
Tucker shows them his lab right off the bat. It's better lit and much less sinister-looking. He also mentions he hasn't been doing very well.
Tucker is framed as much more obviously evil in pretty much every scene. He keeps doing the creepy glasses-adjust thing while making creepy expressions and having creepy music play.
Ed gets angry at Al for playing with Nina.
Ed gets comically angry at the dog and fights it. For once I can say without reservation that the comic relief is totally appropriate.
The Elrics leave for the day, and Havoc gives his message about the assessment. Tucker just says "I know" creepily, with no indication of anxiety or conflictedness.
Tucker exposits about the assessment to Nina. Shouldn't she already know from last year?
Tucker does look solemn when he hugs her.
The next day, Nina tells the Elrics her mom left. Nothing about the letters or anything.
Nina says her dad's always in the lab. There's a small flashback to the Elrics remembering their father doing the same, and Ed suddenly decides to play with Nina. That's sweet, and nicely subtle.
While they play with Nina, there's a cut to Tucker in his lab. This time it is all shadowy, lit only by one gaslamp. Geez, Tucker, you're already wearing glasses, stop ruining your eyes even more.
Cut to Team Mustang discussing Scar's murders. Armstrong brings up the perverse nature of State Alchemists, saying alchemy is supposed to be for the people but State Alchemists turn it into a weapon of the State. The Ishbalan War is also mentioned.
Cut to Tucker giving his backstory about his wife leaving him and why he needs to pass the assessment. Why, exactly, is he telling them this? They're just random strangers in this continuity. Also odd that the Elrics would ask in the first place. This reeks of needing to deliver exposition regardless of sense.
The lighting actually is darker in this scene, but it doesn't feel as natural to me, more like it's cel-shaded.
There's a mini-flashback to him arguing with his wife.
Tucker offers to play with Nina the next day. The Elrics find nothing suspicious about him doing this so close to the assessment.
Pathetic fallacy is in full force: we get a shot of the storm clouds outside as Ed discovers the Nina chimera. This seems over-the-top to me.
Tucker actually covers himself better here, telling Nina "That person is Edward," instead of "That's Edward, your friend."
We spend slightly more time on the shot of Ed's realization.
Tucker's "not so different" speech is very similar but a little compressed. I feel like it loses something when they didn't have a philosophical conversation earlier. I thought that lent him a bit more credibility, because Ed didn’t refute it then. There’s also the element of perversion in how it was initially framed as positive advice given by a father figure and now that’s all been twisted... there’s a lot of nuance lost here.
Ed looks more sad and anguished as he's punching Tucker. The beatdown actually looks less violent to me – the camera keeps shaking and cutting between perspectives so quickly we can't really focus on anything, and I don't think there's any actual blood splatter. We do actually see Tucker's bleeding face for a split-second, but I personally thought it was more horrific to just see Ed wailing on him as blood flew everywhere. Let the audience’s imagination do the work for you.
One of the blood splatters makes it look like Ed is crying blood. Like it literally looks flush with his eyeball. In later shots it isn’t flush, so I guess that was just an art goof.
Nina doesn't restrain Ed, but she does ask if her dad is hurt.
The brothers don't try to unfuse Nina, they just say it's beyond their power.
We spend more time on Tucker saying how great it is he'll be a State Alchemist again. Ed kicks the watch out of his hands and he crawls over to it like Gollum. This feels over-the-top.
Mustang handles the case this time, and muses that they're not so different because he's killed people in war. That's not really the same thing, Mustang.
Ed is sulking, but it's unclear if he was crying – he sounds like he's sobbing at a few points, but there are no tears. Mustang tells him to suck it up and deal because there's plenty more cases like this, implying that he may have sent Ed here on purpose to teach him a lesson.
EDWARD: Whether we get called dogs of the military, or cursed as devils, Al and I are going to get our bodies back.
I find the phrasing here noteworthy – Ed is only concerned about persecution, not the implication that he will be doing things to deserve it.
Ed starts going on a dramatic rant and Mustang and Riza just walk away. LOL.
Scar shows up and kills Tucker. I initially asked "How did he get in?" but that is actually explained with a helpful cut to the guards outside having been turned into bloody messes.
Nina cries when she sees her dad get murdered in front of her. Jesus, Scar. He still kills her, but all she says is "Dad", nothing about being in pain, so he looks like he's just killing her for being a chimera. Yeesh. You're not scoring a lot of points on the sympathetic villain front, Scar.
Conclusion
I think these two episodes are lessons in "show, don't tell," and "less is more". Brotherhood's version just feels so rushed, a villain of the week with no greater significance. Ed couldn't save the innocent girl, isn't that sad, now let's move on. We don't linger on anything long enough to form a real emotional attachment. Even if it did, the endless HEY HAVE YOU REALIZED TUCKER IS EVIL YET HAVE YOU HAVE YOU would have wrecked that anyway. It's so trite. It's also so forced – there's no real reason for Ed to be visiting him at this point, and if they actually learn anything from the research, it's never mentioned. It's so transparently just an excuse to place them in position.
In OG's version, this becomes part of an actual arc in the brothers' lives. We have time to get invested, get a sense of wrongness without it being obvious, to feel like we got the rug swept out from under us instead of expecting it. There is a sense of progression, with real foreshadowing as Ed slowly pieces it together. Moreover, the change of Tucker becoming their guardian informs so much of this. These are no longer skilled, hardened shonen protagonists dealing with the tragedy of the week. These are desperate children who have to see this horror destroy their adoptive family. Even after you process the tragedy of Nina's suffering, you're left with the tragedy of: what will these kids do now? Who will take care of them? Will they be able to trust anyone ever again?
It’s also just so important that Ed actually plans to separate Nina, and moreover puts his life on the line by fighting a scary general for her. He knows there’s probably nothing he can do, but he wants to try anyway, because he cares. Because that’s the kind of person he is. It’s so easy to tell yourself you don’t have to try because there’s nothing you can do. That’s almost never actually true. To do nothing is, itself, a choice. And indeed, Scar shows that there was a solution here -- it was just one they couldn’t bear to take. Now, was that the correct solution? Is it right to give a mercy killing to a suffering toddler when you can’t ask her permission because she does not even know how to express such a concept? Should Ed have tried to separate her anyway, even knowing it likely would have killed her? And of course, the elephant in the room: should we really be expecting a sobbing 12-year-old to be a rational moral actor in the first place? OG gives us so much to engage with, important questions, important choices, important feelings.
I cried so bad I could barely focus on this writeup when I saw the OG episode. I didn't cry at all when I watched the Brotherhood version. That should really tell you something.
I also prefer OG's portrayal of Scar here. You can see how he is, himself, lost and confused. He's a mysterious figure I sympathize with and want to learn more about, not just a one-note murder machine.
We are already beginning to see divergences in the plotlines, too. In Brotherhood, Tucker and Grand were both killed. In OG, they're still around. Followup on that, there will be.
