At the time Zs'skayr is not in the watch, so it's 100% Ben. The reason he vanished is similar to what you mentioned though, in that due to Ben's fear of this form, even if Zs'skayr is not there, still gives Ben quite a lot of anxiety. It also doesn't help that there are times that Ghostfreak does showcase aggressive elements, even without Zs'skayr in him. So Ghostfreak ditched in order to keep himself from doing anything bad. In fact, after the other nine aliens are found and everyone learns what Ben did, Julie is the one who finds Ghostfreak. She was upset with Ben for both lying, and doing this to himself, and wanted some space to think, heading to the Pier. She just so happens to find Ghostfreak there playing some of the games, with people around being too scared to stop or speak to him. The two talk, as Ghostfreak is fairly honest and open about his emotions and thoughts, somewhat feeling depressed. Julie asks him why he came to the pier, and he admits he thought coming somewhere with good memories would keep him grounded, given the pier is him and Julie's special place. All in all, Ghostfreak is not a happy chap.

I rewatched Duped for the heck of it, and I’m pretty sure Kevin was the only one with the braincell that day.

If you extend that to the writers for trying to make Ben out to be the bad guy, I’ll agree with you. They’re so good at writing an inspirational hero that they somehow don’t know how to break that down and give him flaws.

In Defense of Julie Yamamoto

I want to talk about Julie as I’ve noticed she gets a lot of hate from all corners of the fandom. Omniverse fans consider her boring, some fans write her as a toxic girlfriend especially Bwen shippers and she got the short end of the stick from the writers. As an Asian American, I want more Asian rep as well so that’s another reason I’m defending her and am still salty about how OV treated her.

The thing is, she always tried to be supportive of Ben since the start of Alien Force. She was willing to help during Big Chill’s pregnancy and tried to reassure Ben after his identity was leaked. While she was upset with the way the arrogant clone acted in Duped, she accepted Ben had responsibilities as a hero. She only got mad at him after learning he snuck off to watch the Sumo Slammers movie. That wasn’t even the first time he did something like that. Back in Pet Project, he lied so he could stay home and watch a movie. That doesn’t make him a bad guy, he probably doesn’t get much time to himself as a hero. The problem is a lack of communication as they could have just talked about it.

As for the claim that she was boring, we see glimpses of her personality that go beyond tennis player. She’s a bit headstrong as she would often charge into danger, examples being Pet Project, Greetings from Techadon, and Inspector 13. She can be a bit stubborn about what she believes in and really wants to help people when joining the Flame Keeper’s Circle, something she shares with Ben who also has a hard time changing his mind and really enjoys helping people. It’s a shame we only saw her dad once. Something UAF didn’t do nearly enough was flesh out the characters families more. Let Julie interact with Carl and Sandra and vice versa. Have them stage an intervention with Ben and their concerns about his fame. Ben meeting Julie’s parents could have been a motivation to be a better boyfriend. Flesh out her relationship with her dad. Dwayne McDuffie was a big supporter of diversity in comics. It would have been a great opportunity to show a healthy Asian parent-child relationship as opposed to the Tiger parent stereotype.

Now onto Omniverse. For starters, like the AF trio, her design feels like a step in the wrong direction. Julie was always shown to be very mature and yet like Gwen, she dresses more like a 10 year old in OV. As @vreedleedleedle pointed out, her design looks much more like a racial stereotype than in UAF especially her eyes. Second, the end of Ultimate Alien made her important as a character where she was able to talk some sense into Ben when he was about to remake the universe in his image. You’d think from the ending that she’d be part of the team more often. Then OV doesn’t mention her until the end of season 2 where we learn they broke up. Even if you prefer them as just friends, they didn’t do nearly enough with her character and she doesn’t make another appearance till the harem episode where she’s used for jokes. Julie deserved better than how the writers or fans treated her and she’s not a bad girlfriend. She respected that Ben had a job to do and only got angry when he didn’t care about her interests. Again, them having flaws doesn’t make them bad people, they’re emotionally immature teens who’ve been through a lot of traumatic events. They’re going to make mistakes.

“Why do you guys even watch RWBY if you hate it so much!?”

I am a fan of a show called Ben 10.  As controversial an opinion as this is, my favorite installment of the franchise was Alien Force.

One of the things that Alien Force did that I enjoyed was set up a romantic relationship between Ben and a new character named Julie.  I loved their relationship, the episode where they began dating showed off how great their chemistry was and how the two worked perfectly together.

The next installment, Ultimate Alien, gave serious blows to their relationship.  Almost every time their was an episode with the two, that episode was driven by the conflict between them.  And that all started with the episode Duped, which was the first time I ever disliked an episode because of how forced the conflict felt.

The next installment, Omniverse, felt like an insult to anyone who ever liked these two together.  Julie only has one speaking appearance in all eight seasons of Omniverse, and that episode had Ben and Julie break up in a flashback because Ben was playing video games and couldn’t be bothered to pay attention to his girlfriend.  That episode had a flashback to say that Ben accidentally broke up with Julie and didn’t notice for who knows how long.

And that’s just one of the criticisms I can make.  Earlier Omniverse feels like Ben 10 at it’s worst.

And Omniverse does get good.  It gets so good.  It is the perfect end for the Ben 10 franchise.  If I gave up on Omniverse because I didn’t like its first season, I would have missed out on so many cool new aliens.  I would have missed fun new or returning characters.  It would have missed stories that further expanded on the concepts the show had (When it wasn’t trying to retcon the last two installments).

Just because I’m critical of certain aspects of the show doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy it.  Far from it, actually.  I’m angry about Omniverse’s flaws because I’m a fan of Ben 10.

It’s no different with RWBY.  People are upset about its problems because they enjoyed some part of it, or because they wanted to enjoy it.

If you have to write a clone story like Animorphs' "The Separation" or Ben 10's "Duped" please place the story at a point where the character is facing some intense internal struggle, and actually use the cloning plot device to explore how the character feels split. Don't immediately separate the clones and have them face wildly unrelated problems - make the two halves undergo some kind of contrasting/complementary development, so the viewer actually understands the character's internal conflict better.

Anyway AU where Ash is the wielder of the Omnitrix and Pikachu is also the wielder of the Omnitrix but for animals.

But isn't that just the Neme- Azmuth made a second Omnitrix for nonsapient species fuck you and your idiot crab.

Because Pokemon are a weird grey area they're in both databases, because it would make more sense for them to be in the Omnitrix wielded by an actual Pokemon but given that Meowth, most Legendaries and Alakazam exist they also absolutely have to be considered sapient.

The capsule drops in the woods just outside of Pallet Town about a month before the Journey begins

Pikachu's Omnitrix messes with Pokeballs so he's technically wild but between the fact he can't be caught and Professor Oak manually inputting his information into the League Files to avoid potential issues everyone assumes he's Ash's and nobody in the know sees any reason to challenge that assumption.

Delia, Oak and Gary are all in the know because they were there that night.

As always, first actual Villain is Animo. You'd think that having Pokemon to work with instead of ordinary animals would give him an advantage but then you remember that everyone else has Pokemon too.

Team Rocket takes forever to figure out that Ash and Pikachu are the alien heroes who keep wrecking their plans.

I got sick and so I finally got some free time to finish Ben 10: Alien Force and Ultimate Alien. I am finally on the last season of Ultimate Alien (like half way through it) and I can safely say I enjoy it far more than Alien Force. I have no idea if that's actually a hot take but there it is. Now that I have finally watched this stuff and am nearly finished... I am still kind of shocked this is like considered top tier for the franchise. I find more issues with it than I did Omniverse. Not to say Omniverse is better because, aside maybe for my tastes, it isn't. To me they're pretty equal if I put my personal bias aside. It's just shocking in a sense because... I expected with how hated Omniverse was and how beloved these two were (besides season 3 of AF) that this would be amazing. It's not. I suppose I should learn that I can't take everybody at their word, especially when it comes to nostaglia. I still think the Og is top tier and these three other shows can't really compete with it. They each bring their own fun and frustrations to the table though. I can finally tell you my favorite versions of each character based on all I've watched. My favorite Gwen is Og, I think the following franchises didn't do her any justice. My favorite Grandpa Max is Og. I find every other iteration of him a pain. My favorite version of Kevin is obviously AF/UA. He is literally the best thing about those two shows. But my favorite Ben is in Omniverse. And I think this mostly has to do with the fact he's the most like Sonic (one of my most favorite fictional characters of all time) in Omniverse. Obviously he's still his own character but I can't ignore the comparison. I enjoy him the most in Omniverse as he's not quite as annoying as in Og (though I still love Og Ben), he's actually entertaining compared to Alien Force Ben who was kind of boring to me, I'm sorry. And while Ultimate Alien Ben was better his whole "I have a big ego and saved the universe dozens of times" jokes felt very inappropriately timed and wrong? Omniverse really gets that right for me, for whatever reason. I also feel as if it remained the most faithful to his character even in the poorly written episodes whereas in Ultimate Alien there's like this whole plot where Ben is ready to just kill a friend he’s known for a while now simply because they went a little insane with power which I wouldn't normally take issue with if this hadn't happened before and Ben wasn't like vehemently against hurting anybody originally. They even go as far as to point this out in the episode and Ben kind of steamrolls over it with, "Well, it was my fault so I should take this more seriously" despite the fact he never acts like this again so I don't get the point of it. It was actually really depressing, to be honest. Also, the amount of digs at Og Ben in Ultimate Alien is honestly frustrating. It's not huge or anything but it's enough to annoy me. It fundamentally misunderstands what Ben 10 Og was to prove some sort of point about their Ben. Look, I get it. They changed a lot so I'm sure so many fans at the time were complaining about how AF/UA Ben is nothing like Og Ben but do you gotta be this gosh darn insensitive about the source material your show is based off of and inspired by? Like in the episode Duped Ben splits into 3 different Bens and the rude and obnoxious one says, "I'm Ben 10 classic. Miss me?" Am I the only one who finds that mean? And then that episode where they have Og Ben actually show up and he's just an obnoxious asshole the entire time except that one deep moment they give which was to justify why he was an asshole as child which they didn't even need to do. He was 10. Of course he would be a brat. But he wasn't always a brat in the original and he did actually understand he could hurt peoples' feelings. Omniverse actually has a similar episode to this except big Ben and Og Ben switch bodies and in that he is not as a big of an asshole as Ultimate Alien made him out to be in that episode. I do not understand why it was necessary to make him so gosh darn mean. I really, really like Ben 10 so to constantly have these digs at the source material is frustrating. Aside from this Ultimate Alien is pretty great. I find Julie much less frustrating as a character, the episodes are fun, I have actually laughed out loud more than once, and, again, Ben is actually fun to watch. I cannot stress enough how much more fun it is that Ben actually seems to act like the teenager he is rather than some mini adult. I know realistically after all the hell he's been through he would have matured a lot but that doesn't mean he doesn't still have a teen mind and won't act like a kid sometimes. Also, Ultimate Alien actually killed a character on screen. Like no cut aways or some kind of logic to explain it or off-screen shenanigans. An alien just flat out died on screen and that took me so off-guard I laughed. I'm having so much fun enjoying an old cartoon I loved, despite my frustrations. This has been great. I couldn't recommend the whole of the Ben 10 franchise more. Aside from the reboot which I still have yet to watch in full but considering how upset the first two episodes made me, I'm a little scared to give it a chance again.

Writing

The Sunday Currently! Idk if this is really my 11th TSC post. I forgot? I promise to write longer than last week. But I can't promise that I will do it today :) So how was your week? Mine is.. meh. It's been pretty calm. Which is good!

Feeling

Cold! I was up (5th floor) and out (the podium) earlier to capture the sunrise. And Goddddd. What a view. What. A. View. Always worth the wait! But I think I was waiting for a good 10-mins out in the cold, morning air. It's fine. I got to see the sunrise for the first time this year. I always see it when it's up already kasi.

Loving

My beautiful sunrise & sunset shots! It became my morning & afternoon routine when I found out someone likes seeing them. But I mostly, those shots are for myself. It reminds me to be thankful that I get to see the sun every day. Oh, the litol things~

Wanting

To quit my job. I know, I know. I've been saying this a million times. But I want to quit, and find a new one here. I know, I know. I told myself that I will go home after quitting. But as a balisang Gemini.. idk idk. Let's just cross the bridge when we get there, I guess?

Mostly veggies, fish, seafoods, and fruits! It's because we're trying to eat healthy. Well, my roomie is trying to be healthy. Damay damay daw. But I'm eating istapeggy & burger right now. So do each of the split transformations have a primary aspect of Ben's personality like the 2 bens in "Duped"?

Like would Rath become a representation of Ben's more intense emotions? (because I mean.... well it's RATH)

What would you attribute to each transformation, and how would they handle the tasks they're given, because I'd imagine Brainstorm would do well in an argument with Harangue, while Ripjaws might just be a bit inconvenienced since he can only be without water for so long before he can't breathe.

So each of the aliens isn't really an aspect of Ben's personalities, but instead it's Ben being slightly altered by the alien's instincts and biology. Some more so than others, cause I really like the idea that while each form is still Ben, different aliens make him behave slightly differently. So to explain how each behaves and how they handle their tasks. Big Chill is rather calm, wise, and slightly nurturing due to the event of the baby chills. However, he can get aggressive in a cold and sharp manner when defensive or protective. So at Julie's game, he would be very supportive towards Julie, cheering her on (though rather quietly since he's not a loud alien), but due to Ben being in an alien form, and his fame, many people would be pestering him, cameras flashed at him, and Big Chill would try and hide under his winds, go invisible at times, before eventually snapping and hissing at everyone to back off. Rath is fairly obvious for anyone who's seen him, lol. Loud, aggressive, and willing to fight anything, so him fighting the Forever Knights certainly causes a dent in their plans, being too much to handle. Unfortunately, it becomes a problem when Kevin can't get him to listen, and the two get into some nasty and even personal arguments by mistake. XRL8 has a hummingbird brain, in that he's always having to do something, keep talking and be on the move. So running around dealing with criminals is a fairly easy job for him, but due to how much crime there is, both large and small, even it can overwhelm him. Especially when trying to hide from those that are noticing how Ben seems to be in two places at once, posting photos online. Ripjaws by this point has a water breathing, so he can stay on land for a long time. But today happens to be quite a hot day. So at first, he's able to help his parents, like fixing up the garden, even if they're questioning why he's in alien form. But after a while, the heat becomes a bit much, so they end up all going to the beach to have some quality family time. Goop comes across as flexabile, adaptable, and has a slightly goofy personality, so dealing with fans allows him to keep up a good charismatic charm, and get a lot of people laughing. Also able to stretch himself around to do things with lots of people. But things do become a problem when people either wanna see another alien form, or aren't a fan of dealing with Goop's slime. Brainstorm has a lot of brain power to process, and often speaks openingly, bluntly honest, and speaks what he's currently doing to help process his mind. Doesn't quite have a filter. So he is good at debating against Harangue, which also makes him prideful. But when Harangue gets word on social media that somehow Ben is elsewhere, Brainstorm starts struggling to come up with a reasonable lie or topic to focus on. Upchuck is naturally a hungry fellow, has some poor manners, and basically goes with the flow of things as long as he's happy in the end. He's happy enough to fight Animo, eating up his tech. But after a while it can get very boring and repetitive due to how stubborn and crazy Animo is. Even Animo feels like Ben's off and questions it. Upgrade is calculated, loyal and creative. Taking in details around him and following those he trusts. And given his connection to Galvans, it seemed reasonable to have him go chat with Azmuth, even using it as an excuse to ask questions about the Galvans and Mechamorphs to distract his mentor. But out of anyone it was always going to be Azmuth to figure out something was wrong first, especially about the Omnitrix, and given Upgrade's loyal side, he can't help but let slip what happened. Nanomech is similar to Upgrade, but very loyal to the point that he struggles to say no, due to nanochips being used to taking orders. And once given an order he'll want to see it through to the end, no matter how hard or annoying. But given he also has a mix of human DNA, he'll be very open about his frustration while in the middle of doing a task. So as he tries to find Ghostfreak, he mumbles a lot to himself. And just never finds him in the end. Ghostfreak is quiet, distant, honest and even somewhat depressed. Ben has many conflicting feelings in this form, and due to it's apparent aggression issues, he does what he can to keep it under control. He does have a playful side still, but anxiety can push those feelings away at times. But he is honest in a clear and simple way that doesn't sound harsh, but not sugar-coated as well, hence why he had an actual nice and truthful conversation with Julie.

So there's this scene in "Duped" where Ben brings up that the live action Sumo Slammers movie was opening in theatres that day, and I feel like nobody sees it from his perspective. It's very popular to say that this is wrong on his part because Julie's tennis match was the most important thing in the world that day, apparently. And perhaps even he himself would say that, in hindsight, he didn't absolutely need to go see it at that exact moment in time. But that isn't even my point here.

As I've stated several times before, many episodes try to paint him as the bad guy while maintaining that he's morally sound and generally has good intentions in line with his hero characterization, and "Duped" is no different. But, what I'm saying is that, from his perspective, this isn't a big deal.

He can literally fly or run off in the blink of an eye. If he really wanted to get to another location and come back faster than humanly possible, he could. It is possible for him since he has super human abilities. His powers are something that he uses every single day at that point in time, so using them is like second nature to him. Any time he has to make a choice in how to go about a situation, he will think of how he can use his powers to do things as efficiently as possible. He even mentions this out loud within the show, like at the end of his first date with Julie in Alien Force, where he says that he would fly them home if the Omnitrix wasn't timed out.

That's why he ended up literally trying to use his powers to split himself into three to be everywhere at once and appease everyone at once: literally just because, unlike regular humans, he physically could. It wasn't to hurt anyone. The creative way he uses his powers can only serve to benefit everyone if people just took into account where he was coming from. He is literally a teenager who has had to learn how to use an arsenal of super human abilities to protect the galaxy. Of course he would think that way.

Ben slowly backing away and whipping out his phone just leads me to believe that when Gwen and Kevin start arguing, they get really carried away and it probably goes on for a long while, and it's better to stay away from both of them when they do.

And lol Ben's little smirk, like he knows he can get away with whatever he wants now because he's seen enough of their arguments to know they tend to forgot everything else when fighting with each other.

I kinda wanted to headcanon that Gwen and Kevin were probably already fighting and Ben just happened to be a way they both sort of projected their issues on.
