In honnor of the 20th anneversary of Evanescene's album and it now being back on store shelves, have some thoughts I have on it!
I used to listen to it, back in the day lol. When it came out. I can remember vividly my mom singing it in the car. It was one of the few things that we were allowed to listen to that wasn't 'traditional' christian music.
At the time I didn't even know what any of those words meant. I was 5 afterall lol. But growing up, my view on faith was a weird one. I thought it was a cool concept but, to me, it felt like an interesting book that I wanted to write my own twist ending for. I played pretend like *i* was the one coming back from the dead and stuff. (Yk normal kid things)
And now, looking back 20 years later, despite this album and artist being a 'christian' band, their music still holds up. To me at least, it's probably because they kept the more epic side of things. Being a literal broken person and needing help. Yk all the immagry from the song Tournequte. It still is so cool to me because, even tho I firmly don't follow any religions, the message is still interesting to me and I can honestly interpret it any way I wish. Kinda like having a friend who's christian and they get comfort from that, and me being like, that's good I'm really glad you have this thing that comforts you. yk?
I love the mesh of genres too. I'm bad with names and this is jsut a ramble so I'm doing no research to make this post. But I love how it's a good mix of grunge, early early emo, and christian rock. Like the songs Fuck and they have that signiture flare lots of rock ajacent genres had around the time it came out. The cool beeping at the end of Going Under, I think. And ofc the infamous Wake me up duet thing. I read somewhere they were pressured into that by their label, having a guy do a 'rap'. But it was very iconic and to this day is one song by them that I guarantee everyone probably knows. Or at least can recongnize. I also love how you can have heavier songs like Bring me to life and then the super soft ones like My Imortal. Which, the latter always brings me to tears bc it's so fucking beautiful and haunting and Defined my fucking emo phase.
Also, also fuck if I don't talk about the vocals I will die. I grew up listening to this album and her others. I know the words by heart. I knew them today in the car listening to this cd even tho I havn't played any of these songs since highschool (2013-2017 era). They stuck with me. I taught myself to sing by parroting these songs. And I don't think anyone would disagree with me about how fucking *amazing* of a singer Amy Lee is. She is incredible and honestly I respect her so much. She went out and wrote these songs about loving yourself and finding yourself and fuck what everyone else thinks. It's like, yeah theres the undrlining of god saving you but she also doesn't sound like the majority of the christians nowdays yk? She's not condeming anyone else. She's simply saying that she found comfort and herself through That and that's what saved her. And honestly I respect that so much.
TLDR: Despite being 'christian rock' this album and band are So good and honestly people who call it cringe clearly did not listen to the same album lol

Elvis Music Tag
Thank you darlin' @powerofelvis for tagging me! 💗 Sorry it took me a thousand years to get to!!
I’m tagging @aconflagrationofmyown @tiredbuthappy @fic-over-cannon and whoever else wants to do it!
Last Elvis Song You Listened To: Okay, so I JUST discovered the Home Recordings album and I love it for so many reasons, but one is that he sings part of "If I Loved You" from Carousel and my musical theater loving heart is BURSTING because even though he's like screwing around a bit and it's certainly not "perfect," it gives the tiniest glimpse of how amazing he could have been in a stage musical (especially with even a smidge of extra training). *sob* Also, I'm pretty sure he's the one playing piano on it and I love it when he plays piano. And for some reason he also says "shit" in the middle of the track in between his beautiful singing which is just hilarious considering the song.
Current Elvis Song Stuck In Your Head: Wearin' That Loved On Look and The Girl of My Best Friend are both so catchy, I wake up in the middle of the night with them playing in my head!
Favorite Live Performance Moment: UGH, this is like choosing a favorite child. He just has so many good ones!! I love his performances from the first '69 Vegas concerts (audio only, unfortunately). He still has really endearing nerves and he tells bad jokes and laughs at himself a lot and there's just a lot of unique energy. The famous Are You Lonesome Tonight laughing fit comes from one of those nights and that is one of my favorite things EVER to listen to. My favorite visuals are probably Trying to Get to You and One Night from '68 and maybe You've Lost That Lovin Feeling from '70. And literally so many more...
Favorite Genre/Era You Like To Hear Elvis Sing Most: This often depends on my mood, but overall, I love where his vocals are at from '68-'70. He still has that youthful grit, but is really beginning to develop that delish lower register. I also like 1960 a lot, with that lighter, tenor-y feel. VERY different vocal sounds, but I think that was the utter magic of Elvis, was that he could sing so many different styles and had such an incredible range as a vocalist.
Current Favorite Elvis Song (bc how can you pick!): Without Love
Elvis Song You Tend To Skip: Anything after about '71 is hard for me to listen to. It's not that he didn't have some good stuff going on (I mean, Unchained Melody is a freakin' marvel), but because of the decline in his health/drug use, it's like I can HEAR how sick he is because the voice is such a physical instrument and so dependent on the health of the person it's attached to.
What Kind Of Music Did You Listen To Before/Besides Elvis: Besides E, I have a pretty eclectic music taste, but you can always find musical theater tracks and good vocalists on my playlists. Faouzia's new album was on repeat prior to the rebirth of my Elvis obsession.
Are You Collecting Elvis' CD's, Cassette Tapes, 8-Tracks, or Records? Nope, that's not really my thing. My partner collects all of that stuff (non-Elvis) and our place is full of it LOL. I like the convenience of streaming for sure.
Is There Any Other Music You've Started Listening To Because Of Elvis: Elvis has always been around for me, so I wouldn't say that BUT I am really enjoying discovering different Elvis music that I wasn't necessarily aware of before!!
Last Live Performance You Were At: I went to see Hadestown (the musical) in July. Last concert was...good lord, I don't even remember. Maybe Kelly Clarkson? Or something local.
If You Could Have Been At Any Of Elvis' Live Performances, Which Would Choose: '68 Special, '69 Vegas (pink scarf, baby!!), and the '70 Vegas shows. I'm not much for huge, crazy crowds so the 50s stuff would definitely be OUT unfortunately, and the 70's arena shows were too big. I mean, I would've gone if I'd had the chance, I'm sure!

i must ask.... since you brought up the jolo.... what do you want it to sound like???
okay this is. Way too important to me literally i am so thankful that you gave me a reason to talk about it. i have two ideas though buckle up. and i will talk about concepts too because once i start i can’t stop sorry in advance 🤷🏼‍♀️
For title track ik he is a ballad guy so i guess let him do a ballad but please let it be heart wrenching maybe like To you (one of my favorite svt songs ever and i’m am NOT a ballad person) farewell, neverland or 20cm by txt, baby you are by exo. i don’t like ballads i really don’t but i like songs that are very dramatic and you feel heavy after u listen to them like ur heart is shattered. Concept wise i want him to tap into his 1004 mixed with son of venus kind of vibe because its Right There okay he wasnt born on oct 4 for nothing so i have a moodboard inspired by what i want for him 😭 but yep concept wise i see carat colors, fairy like makeup like txt did just now, lots of pearls, blonde wavy hair and flowy fabrics, think sade no ordinary love like i want everything to be through that hazy, dreamy lens. and then BOOM brings me to second idea - could be second comeback where he does complete 180 or just a song from the 1004 mini album but okay. let’s talk about that one.
So let me start off with saying something: i am big tvxq fan and i love Jaejoong. A lot. And jeonghan reminds me of him so much especially the huge jpn cult following they both have so i would love for him to go that route like think good morning night and love you more 🫶🏻 My idea? Fallen angel. Use the clothes he had for the angelic concept but make it torn, draw cuts on his face and back and bc the clothes is torn u can see white feathers coming out of cuts. Veils, lace, rosaries, burgundy white and black, gold details. Sharp choreo a la Taemin, just sensual and simple in the best way possible (looks simple, is incredibly difficult to execute).
so yeah that’s where i am at i have ideas for albums and covers and CDs i’m just a very visual person like spent my whole life creating so i enjoy brainstorming like this. and these are the moodboards i made ages ago. If you read all of this Please tell me your thoughts love and kisses mwah

okay so awhile ago you posted something about Yosuke (crazy, right?) and in the tags I believe you mentioned something about how you don’t like Yosukes parents? Could you elaborate? bc I have not stopped thinking about it since you mentioned it (sorry this is so vague my memory is horrid skjdjfjgj)
OYSUEJGHHBKEJHDSGVDH oh my god okay SO. At first I just got ~vibes~ from him... like, I couldn’t quite pin down what made me think he had abusive parents, because obviously he never says anything to indicate it explicitly, but then I started noticing... small things.
I don’t want to say outright that I think they’re abusive (physically or verbally) and I also don’t think that Yosuke hates them, or necessarily even sees anything wrong with how they treat him, but I do think that their behavior has severely impacted Yosuke and led to a lot of the negative traits he displays.
To me, the most telling example is this conversation where he talks about Teddie being praised by his parents for being “thoughtful” very pointedly in front of him. It seems to be a reoccurring thing where they compare him to other people (primarily Teddie) and make him feel inferior. Yosuke’s a bit of a pushover, and frequently gets taken advantage of monetarily, and in this case he’s caved and lent Teddie a significant chunk of his savings for their trip to Tatsumi Port Island... only for him to spend it on presents to suck up to Yosuke’s parents which makes Yosuke look unthoughtful. Yosuke clearly sees it that way, even if Teddie hadn’t intentionally planned it out from the start as such (he calls Teddie “surprisingly shrewd”).
Tumblr media
Yosuke gets told off either because a) he didn’t want to fight back/argue, and instead just took a passive stance instead of telling his parents that he was the one to lend Teddie the money in the first place, and thus didn’t have any left to buy them gifts, or b) his parents think so little of him that they don’t believe him at all. He specifically says he doubts his parents understand, which makes me think that he did try to explain the situation.
There are also several instances of a large Junes event being Yosuke’s responsibility, or at least of him thinking that he has to scramble to make things work, like the Junes concert, where he says he’ll have to move away if it doesn’t pan out; maybe this is his own thinking, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if it was something his dad said to scare him into helping, especially considering he MUST know that Yosuke is friends with Rise, or the time during the summer where he calls Yu and begs him to help out. Yosuke isn’t a manager, but he’s still got all the responsibilities of one, and even tries his best to work out other employees’ problems as well (look at his SL).
The Junes concert in particular really sent up some red flags for me, especially because Yosuke says this.
Tumblr media
“Awfully nice for some reason”?
Yosuke’s got terrible self-esteem, there are countless times where he’s shown to be overwhelmed and embarrassed by completely genuine praise from his friends. In one of the drama CDs he mentions that he intentionally doesn’t try his best in school because he doesn’t want to disappoint himself by doing poorly while also knowing that he gave his all. It really makes me think that his parents just have an abysmally low opinion of him, and he’s adopted that same view of himself.
There’s also several scenes where he talks about his parents finding his porn (or Teddie showing it to them) and in his SL he says his mom “read the title out loud to [his] family” which on top of obviously indicating his family is pretty conservative about that kind of thing, also means he’s had to learn to be secretive with them to some extent. In Arena, Yosuke’s mother goes as far as burning the porn Teddie finds. Even if it's meant to be humorous, Yosuke's property is still being destroyed.
Now these next few things are more... abstract and can definitely be argued, but personally I still find them important to point out when discussing the topic.
Yosuke obviously struggles with toxic masculinity, and similarly to Kanji, feels like he needs to be the ideal, strong man that protects the weak, etc. Even without looking at specific dialogue, you can tell that Yosuke’s been raised to think he needs to be a “real” man, that displaying more “feminine” behaviors is a sign of weakness; because that isn’t just subtextual, it’s something he very visibly displays, it’s part of his arc. He can’t mourn and cry, he has to get revenge (because he couldn’t protect Saki at the time and he watched helplessly as she died, it makes it his fault), he says hugs are for girls (a common sentiment, but he had to learn it from somewhere), and any time he slips up and reveals his actual feelings, he has to overcompensate, let everyone know that he’s just your average teenage boy who’s definitely interested in women. Yosuke’s not the most masculine guy, he likes fashion and cares about his appearance (the bar is so low) and I’d bet that if he were given space to explore his interests without any expectations, he might actually find he’s into stuff that goes against what he’s been taught. He admits to liking crossdressing, then walks it back; not because he’s ashamed of it (on the contrary, once he realizes people found him cute, he openly brags about it), but because he thinks he SHOULD be ashamed of it.
It’s why he feels so threatened by Kanji, who completely takes him by surprise when he realizes his outer appearance and interests don’t match up. Now Yosuke’s got to compete with Kanji over who’s the manliest, show that he’s not like Kanji, because Kanji’s already accepted that side of himself, and it totally goes against everything Yosuke’s been taught to think is “normal”.
So then we look at lines like this.
Tumblr media
On its own it’s nothing special, but it’s not just the slogan itself, it’s the way that Yosuke specifically says that his dad is still saying it. Combining this with what I mentioned previously about Yosuke’s behavior, and a few other tidbits, like Teddie mentioning that he watches violent war movies with Yosuke’s dad, it definitely makes me think he’s the type of guy who’d try and push Yosuke into being more masculine, being a traditional, unshakable, unemotional man.
Lastly, there’s the recently identified album on Yosuke’s shelf in arena, and what do you know, one of the songs on it (The Chain, by Mr. Big) has these lyrics...
Tumblr media
In my mind, I see Yosuke’s mother as an incredibly controlling, strict woman who expects her son to be utterly perfect, and even when he’s good, it’s never good enough. Yosuke’s father is busy with Junes, and while he isn’t around the house too often, Yosuke sees him at work quite a bit, large and in-charge, not allowing anyone to see weakness, he leans on his son because he can’t bring himself to ask for help. Yosuke’s left to pick up the slack, and he’s taught by example that relying on others is cowardly, that being intimidating gets you further than being “nice”. Even though Yosuke obviously goes against this, he can't fully commit for fear of standing out and disappointing his parents, and that makes him passive; he ends up being a pushover, and neither of his parents are happy about that. He’s a “disappointment” to them, it’s one of his defining traits that everyone loves to bring up. It's something that's shown to really get under his skin, but he can never do much more than get angry, because he truly thinks he is a disappointment, he doesn't think highly of himself, even if he protests.
Maybe I’m reading into all of these things a little too much, but... I don’t know, I’ve said it before, but I just don’t see how half of Yosuke’s personality would have been shaped by anything other than his parents being Not Great.

1. what is the first song you remember hearing? Oh man uhh... i remember my my dad playing the video for... oops i did it again I think? by britney spears and i was very obsessed with it. if i saw the video I would know but i don’t feel like doing that. hard to say if that is my earliest memory of music tho. i remember listening to the R.E.M. In Time greatest hits in the car late at night and feeling weird out of body as Man on the Moon came on. i like that story better but I have no idea when that memory is from. i also feel like i heard my mom singing along with Sarah McLaughlin or Norah Jones a lot when i was very young.
2. what is the first band you got into? hmm... i  really loved Bon Jovi when I was very young but i didn’t like. have any knowledge of them or their discography I just liked slippery when wet and their greatest hits. and also thats embarrassing so i am trying to think of an out... probably the first real musical obsession i had was lana del rey when I was 14 /15 but thats also not great. just take the L buddy... i didnt actually get into music i would now consider very good until about 16.
3. do you collect any physical music? during quar i started trolling ebay and other similar sites for cheap cds and I have gotten a pretty good collection! you would be shocked the number of people who just really do not want to have their R.E.M. albums anymore. I have a few vinyls- a couple of cheap Joni records, Station to Station, the mats Dead Mans Pop boxset thing, and the R.E.M. single So. Central Rain. Oh and I have a very cool cd single of beastie boys body movin’. I also have a collection of cassettes that used to belong to my mom- she passed 5 yrs ago so they are very special to me! she had some R.E.M., U2, Eurythmics, Squeeze, Crowded House, Indigo Girls, and I recently dug up a bootlegged Tracy Chapman tape! she might have some more at her childhood home and if I find a tape of murmur i’ll like blackout. the sad thing is that now I really like all these musicians my mom apparently liked but i was not into them when she was alive so :/ figuring things out feels like archeology. was listening to In Time greatest hits the other day and was like she definitely skipped E-Bow the Letter every time it came on lol bc i did not hear this song until like last year.
4. what is your favourite piece of music memorabilia? do you know that picture of R.E.M. where they are all holding roses like they are all going to the prom together? i scored a poster of that off Ebay for the incredible deal of $50!! a deal at any price :) I don’t have much that is like legit valuable lol. But here you have to see the picture
Tumblr media
5. what's your favourite concert you've ever been to? hmm i havent really been to any truly mindblowing concerts I don’t think. I got to see Tommy Stinson play an acoustic set at 7th street entry in 2019 which was very cool. I feel crazy saying thats my favorite but it was incredibly special.
6. if you could see one artist who is no longer alive in concert, who would it be? If you ask right now I would probably have to say Replacements with Bob Stinson. Prince would be a close one
7. have you met any musicians? almost! when i went to see tommy stinson, afterwards he was hanging in a bar next to the club and was taking selfies with people. i kept thinking about getting in line and eventually i decided to just do it. when i finally went to go look for him he was deep in a conversation with someone and I also realized i had nothing intelligent to say, so i sat and stared at him talking for a bit until i left and went back to the show.
8. what is your go to album when you're feeling sad? Tim by the mats! i think i maybe listened to this album every day my senior year of high school. it is legitimately strange how I feel as if this album just knows me very well. everyone says this about the mats but every song feels like it’s about me and my life. I think a perk of being a lower middle class Minnesotan with an alcoholic father is just really really getting the replacements. but i guess it depends on the kind of sad I am. If i’m just looking to be cheered up i might go with Lifes Rich Pageant or Green by R.E.M. because invariably by the end of Tim I will be bummed out !
9. what is your go to album when you're feeling happy? somehow this is a very hard question. Radio City by Big Star was a big one for me when i was still on campus. maybe an obvious one but rubber soul is a good being happy album
10. what is one music documentary you love? the doc Every Everything about Grant Hart from Hüsker Dü is a favorite. it’s just all interview with him and he’s a fascinating guy. I’ve never watched an interview with him where i wasn’t like woah u’re smart :0... the director of that also did a good replacements doc but at certain point with mats journalism im just like well i could’ve just read trouble boys.
11. what is one concert DVD you love? I think I only own one concert DVD, Prince’s Lovesexy show which i was very obsessed with back in high school.
12. do you prefer listening to playlists or albums? i prefer albums usually, sometimes i’m in the mood for a playlist but albums are def superior
13. do you prefer to listen to albums in order or on shuffle? in order !!!! What am i a psychopath
14. what is your favourite deep cut song by your favourite artist? Portland by the mats is a top ten song of theirs. very in character for it to be a b-side i’m not even mad
15. what is your favourite cd/cassette/vinyl you own in terms of packaging? I love the inner sleeve of my Grandpaboy cd which is just Paul Westerberg’s doodles and scribblings. sometimes when i buy stuff off of ebay it comes with notes and stuff too which is my favorite. my copy of suicaine gratifaction came with a very sweet note of how much the previous owner loved it. and my copy of mbv’s loveless has this very hard to read note which i can maybe make out half of. if you can read it please translate for me.
Tumblr media

congrats on 250!!! you’re so talented and i can’t wait to see you grow more and more :)) can i do 🦋 for my fav begin again and 🔪 for my favorite episode (normal) :)))
thank you so much!
🦋 red is such a special album to me because it’s one the first cds that i owned. begin again is a quintessential taylor song, it’s a little bittlesweet and the lyrics really shine. she’s such a great storyteller that it feels like you’re watching these small intimate moments of two people falling in love. my favorite line from it is and for the first time, what's past is past i think that it just totally captures what red as an album is about. red is full of heartbreak and it’s about being able to move on from that. a lot of red especially the slower more twangy country pop songs reminds me of folklore and evermore. it’s like she never shed those country roots!! also the music video is so beautiful. the coloring is a little blue (ahhh she’s so incredible how she describes love as blue in so many songs)!!
🔪normal was a such a great episode and season 4 as a whole was an amazing season for criminal minds. i watched it so long ago so i rewatched it last night bc i didn’t remember anything from it.
One thing I really liked about this episode is that in the beginning we really are just watching Norman’s delusion
Full stop: I’m a cat person so instead of picking out baby names I pick out future cat names and Norman is one of them (I also feel like Spencer would be a cool cat name but that’s a family name so I think people would think I named the cat from them and not a fictional cop 🙃)
I digress.
Was Norman going to kill his wife at the party bc it seems really weird to give her a shotgun for a gift.
It’s such a sick episode like when we find out that his family was dead even before that bau got there
Emily was like “there’s too many mid aged white dudes that can be serial killers” 🧐🤨
The car chase was so intense, especially Spencer’s reactions to Derek going so fast and the crash scene was really well done. They came so far from the cringey graphics of season 1-2
The wrap up was really sweet with JJ bringing Henry in 🥰 she looks so pretty too
Gas! That’s so cute makes me almost forget how fucked up this episode was
When JJ calls Hotch out for smiling I swore I heard him say gas but I know the captions say yes but I’m saying that he said gas.
Overall: it’s a very intense episode that really messes with your mind. It’s bad guys like Norman that seems so normal that are really the scariest. It has so cute moments but it really makes me miss JJ. I don’t hate Jordan but it’s not the same dynamics ya know? The song choice “well respected man” — kinks was a good choice!!
Thank you for sending emojis in and supporting me 😘💕💕

warnings: i feel like i dragged this on for too long but i hope it’s still cute :’)) also i put in a joke like twice LOL anyways lil wooz only gets tongue-tied around you so you become his muse for songs
You were looking for a place to stay in bc “I am a grown adult i am not living with yall anymore” you @ your parents
And they’re like lol ok Good Luck Kiddo
After a month and a half of deeeeep searching you finally find a reasonably priced place to live in
It’s quite a distance from your parents’ home but it’s the point of you moving out to begin with
On the move-in day, you’re carrying your boxes up to your new apartment complex and you hear some tunes drifting from your next door neighbor
And you’re like hey this is actually really good music but i’ve never heard of it
You shrug it off and continue settling in
Once you finished hauling your boxes, you were about to pass out on your couch
Ok you actually did pass out on your couch
But you had to unpack some necessities later that night for bathroom and bedroom purposes
All you had for dinner was pop in some instant ramen and call it a night. You then hopped in the shower and got ready for bed
The following morning it was primarily you unpacking and shifting around your furniture a little but it was challenging by yourself
You were making a good amount of noise and in the middle of the day you were met with a very loud knock on your door
And you were in the middle of unpacking your kitchenware so you were like oh shoot ahh i’ll be right there!!
Little did you know your next door neighbor wasn’t having any of it
Can’t I get some peace and quiet around here? He grumbled as he impatiently waited for you to open the door
I swear, I’m gonna tell them off they won’t even knOW what will hit--
You finally opened the door, and he’s like oh. My gosh.
You had a few pieces of hair sticking to your forehead and your hair was tied back in a messy bun
You were dressed in a faded coral tee underneath a pair of worn-out denim overalls with house slippers
Everything he planned to complain about suddenly vanished and his first thought was:
“Is that Pikachu on your front pocket?”
Apparently he said that aloud, which he didn’t register until he saw you giggling
“Yeah, it was a hand-me-down! Still cute, right?”
And he’s kinda still just staring at you with his mouth slightly agape
And you’re like oh right ahem did you need anything?
That’s when he notices the utter mess behind you: plastic covering still over some of your furniture, half-emptied boxes littered in almost every inch of the floor, etc.
And that’s when it hits him: all that noise was you unpacking
“O-oh yeah, I just,, wanted to let you know that it was getting a little loud since I live right next door”
He silently curses at himself like i almost went off at my new neighbor rip that wasn’t gonna be a good first impression
Luckily for him, you were chill about it and you’re like omg sorry!!! It’s a little tough doing this by myself, sorry for the ruckus
Before he could stop himself, he blurted out, “do you need any help?”
Jihoon internally: u doofus u have an album to produce whAT ARE U DOING
Jihoon externally: i can help you :))) no matter how smol i may be
But that internal reprimanding melted away when he saw your eyes light up in relief and you’re practically bouncing up and down
“Would you, really??? It would be great if I had another hand around! Oh, but you’re probably occupied doing something, right??” and you feel bad that a stranger, your next door neighbor nonetheless, was about to abandon his work just for you
A cute neighbor, at that
Jihoon is like ok this is your chance to get away and go back to work cmon man
But there’s just something about you that pulls him in magnetically and he finds himself trying to reason internally that it’ll just be for a “few moments”
Yyyeaaahhh that doesn’t happen lmao rip Jihoon’s songs
Jihoon is just like “nah it’s fine I can help out for a bit” and you’re like god bless this human being
When you open your door further to let him in, he’s like oh right btw I’m Jihoon
“I’m y/n! Sorry about the mess, I only got here yesterday evening”
He shakes his head and quirks up his lips ever so slightly, “i remember when my place looked like this too except replace this space with music production things”
And you’re like ooOOoOoOO you make songs??? That’s amazing!!
And that’s when you got the ball rolling!!!
“A few moments” turn into hours and the next thing you know it’s dinnertime
“Oh crap sorry for keeping you for this long,,, those songs won’t produce themselves, right? I think I can take it from here”
Admittedly, jihoon didn’t wanna leave just yet bc he actually enjoyed your company and it was nice taking a break from staring at his screen frustratedly
“Well, I don’t mind helping out. I could show you my work one day if you want”
And you’re like holy cheeseballs yES
He starts getting up and brushing off his clothes and you’re a little sad that he’s leaving and he kinda is too :(
“If you’re not too busy tomorrow, you’re welcome to help me out more! I mean, you already helped me a whole lot today, but there’s still some things left to do”
As much as his brain is telling him to NOT DO IT,,,,
He does it
Next thing you know, jihoon is at your door again around the same time and he has something in his hand
As you let him inside, you ask him what it is and he’s like ;))))
“It’s a CD that compiled just a few songs I thought you might like”
And you’re #shook bc did he really just have a CD like this out in the open or did he really take his time yesterday to transfer songs on it??
“Do you have a player or a laptop?”
“Yeah, my laptop is on my bed, you can bring it out here!” You shout over your shoulder as you arrange your things in the living room
Shortly afterwards he emerges from the hallway and he presses a few buttons and clicks here and there and beautiful melodies ring out from your speakers
You can’t help but stop rustling to take in the sweet tunes and you’re just like :’))) have i heard anything so beautiful??? :’)))
One of the songs sound vaguely familiar and you realize it’s what you heard when you first arrived here
“Did you actually produce this??? This sounds like an actual song you can hear on the radio”
And he’s like yep made by yours truly!!!
He was only using “yours truly” half-metaphorically if you know what I mean ;)))
You keep bouncing to all the catchy tunes and swaying to the soulful ones
And in all honesty, seeing your reactions makes Jihoon feel really warm and even a little proud bc it’s one of the biggest reasons why he loves his job so much
He makes eye contact with you and you’re like :D and he’s like ahEM COuGh coUGh i’m gonna dust this shelf over here
He suddenly stands up and busies himself and you’re like ???? okie dokie
He’s a real help around the place and you’re practically done settling in
As you survey your fresh living space, you can’t help but feel a little…. Disheartened?
Bc it was actually really fun to have him around even while he made blunt remarks about your taste of decorations
“This looks like something my five-year-old niece would have”
“For your information, I got that from a five-year-old!! It’s cute, alright!”
You spent the past three days with Jihoon unpacking and talking about whatever comes to mind
Jihoon is pretty devastated that he has to go back to his makeshift studio in his room as much as he will never admit it
He eventually leaves your place and the both of you are just sad little puppies
From then on, every time you pass by each other, you greet him with a friendly smile and wave and you never fail to make his heart skip several beats
You don’t talk as much as how you first started bc he’s gotten much busier trying to mass-produce a lot of songs
For some strange reason, every time you hear a melody coming from the other side of the walls, you feel like you’re somehow connected with him
Well, except for the muffled cursing LMAO
And sometimes you would also hear several male voices at once and you’re guessing they’re his friends or the people he’s working with on the song, but based on their friendly banter and the constant run-throughs, it’s probably both
You would hear the same melody play over and over again, and you’re guessing he’s stuck on a certain part of a song as he tries to recreate new melodies from that point on
“aaAAGHGHHHGGHHHH” *deep sigh* me trying to overcome writer’s block LMAO
This would happen for about half an hour and you can’t help but wanting to reach out to him, but you’re not exactly the most musically-inclined person sadly
When he ultimately calms down, he goes back to working on the song until he finally gets the results he desires
More often than not, you fall asleep from hearing the slow ballads he creates with a smile on your face
Lil Jihoon does try to visit you and vice versa!! He sometimes shows up with random food and more CDs and you’re wondering just how many songs has this guy produced in his lifetime??? He looks around the same age as you but he’s probably produced 26+ songs by the way he packs a decent amount on each CD
Usually his excuse to sharing a meal with you is that “the guys brought over too much and i have a ton of leftovers that i can’t finish by myself”
In reality, he stared at a restaurant’s menu and contemplated for about twenty minutes about what you would like. This guy’s got dedication not just for work
“Would it be weird if i get fried chicken?? Maybe just a bowl of noodles?? What if soup is better??? It would give weird vibes if i bought drinks too, right?? Or should i just go ahead and buy them???”
Regardless of what he buys, you’re eager to eat anything and everything with your fav neighbor *wink wonk*
You feel bad when he would do that though, so you try to return the favor every so often as well
One time, you ordered some takeout but the servings were waaaaay bigger than advertised and you’re like Idea!! Let’s head over next door!! So you took the plastic bags and put in some drinks before heading out the door
You knocked on the door and that was when you heard light chatter on the other side of the door
You’re like sldjfljds i hope im not interrupting anything aaa mAYBE I SHOULD JUST LEAVE--
Too late, someone’s voice rang out “I’ll get it!” and next thing you know, the door swings out to reveal a face you’ve never seen before
“Oh, hi!” He says a little surprisedly but with a smile nevertheless
“H-hi, umm,,,, is Jihoon there?”
The guy is nodding his head in the direction of the back hallway, “yeah, he’s in the bathroom” and that’s when he looks down at your hands and his eyes instantly light up
“Omg did you bring food?? You’re so thoughtful!! Come in, come in!!” and before you could protest he literally drags you in and you’re met with a bunch of other strangers who are staring back at you like :oooo????
“Who’s this?? Jihoon never mentioned someone coming over today,, AND YOU CAN’T JUST DRAG SOMEONE IN THIS ISN’T YOUR HOME”
And you’re like ya i didnt know either lmao
You’re awkwardly shifting on your feet and praying jihoon will pop up instantaneously bc you’re gonna melt in embarrassment
“I just wanted to give him some of this,” you hold up your hands to gesture your food, “since it’s too much for me to finish on my own”
“Oh that’s cool! Some of the other guys are actually out to get more lunch, but food goes out fast with all of us here,” another guy says as he pats your shoulder reassuringly. “Well, since you’re already here, you can join us!”
“I-it’s ok! I hope I wasn’t interrupting anything, I just wanted to deliver this,,, I’ll get going” and you’re about to zOOM outta there but the same guy who ushered you in is like nO DONT LEAVE
“We’re taking a lunch break, so it’s cool if you join us! I’m Soonyoung” and he’s like :DDD and you’re just like ,,,, what a hyper guy but i like him
Everyone goes around to introducing themselves
you do a headcount of 8 and you remember there’s more guys getting food for them,,,, holy heck how many people do they have???? You’re about to introduce yourself after them but then
“Soonyoung, who was at the door--” a familiar voice calls out in the hallway before he emerges
And jihoon is like dsljLSJDF what the hELL
“Y/N??? What are you doing here???” *side eyes soonyoung*
And everyone’s making eyes at each other like waIT WAIT THIS IS Y/N???
“Soonyoung dragged me inside”
“Gdi soonyoung, how many times do i have to tell you that you can’t go around dragging people to join us???”
This guy who you think is named Seokmin pipes up, “yeah he does this all the time at our workplace too. A lot of our coworkers always end up extending their stay for far too long” and you’re nodding slowly like yeahhh i can see that happening
Soonyoung’s eyes are widened and he turns to jihoon like “is this the y/n that inspired your recent so--”
And jihoon is quick to cover his mouth so his voice is all muffled
“aHahaAHHAH soonyoung’s always the joker, april fools day!!! Let’s set the table, the others should be back soon”
jihoon whispering to soonyoung: you better sleep with one eye open tonight boi
And you’re like uhh alrighty :)))???
About twenty minutes after you’ve arrived, there’s another knock on the door
Soonyoung is practically bouncing on his way to the door and you can hear more unknown voices
They’re filing in and they suddenly stop and look at you like wait what
Them: :o????
You: :))),,, what up
Jeonghan briefly explains the situation to the guy who came in the door first and you’re lowkey intimidated bc he seems to be eldest and looks like he could beat you up to a pulp
BOY WERE YOU WRONG
After jeonghan tells him, he breaks out into this gigantic, cute gummy smile like welcome!! :DD i’m seungcheol! And the other guys behind him follow suit
Jeonghan’s like “this is,, y/n” and everyone tries to be subtle and nods like they didn’t hear jihoon babble on and on about you for weeks
You: ok why do yall act all weird when my name is brought up whAT DID JIHOON TELL YOU
Them: i would tell you but i don’t wanna die just yet sorry dude
Jihoon, somewhere in the kitchen: SET! THE! TABLE!
You end up staying there for a pretty long time, bonding over the whole feast you have and it’s really lively and fun, not to mention super loud with 13 guys in the same room,,, but you’re genuinely having a good time
Jihoon would glance at you nervously occasionally to check on you if you’re uncomfortable in any way
Jeonghan, who’s sitting next to him, notices jihoon’s eyes are practically glued to you and he’s like “is this the part where you confess your undying love and propose”
And jihoon is like shUT UP NO WHAT this chicken tastes great *quickly chugs down water*
You look back at jihoon sometimes and see he looks flushed but it’s not like he’s drinking alcohol
“Jihoon are you feeling ok?? Your ears are bright red” which obviously makes them redder rip
“I-i’m fine,, wow is it hot in here maybe it’s just the spiciness of the chicken let’s open the windows”
You eventually leave them as much as they protest and even try to get Jihoon to guilt trip you (unsuccessfully)
“Don’t leave just yet y/n!! You should stay, right Jihoon???”
“Huh?? O-oh yeah, I mean, you can if you want,,,,, we kinda need to work though”
Everyone’s looking at jihoon like bro wTF are u kidding me
Rip reader i can feel your heart drop :’(((
You’re feeling slightly dejected but you nod understandingly. You’ve already stayed far longer than you anticipated anyways, and work comes first for Jihoon
“Yeah, I totally get it! Good luck on the album guys!” You put on your shoes and close the door
When they finally hear your own door close, they’re attacking jihoon like
“SO Y/N IS THE ONE BEHIND ALL YOUR SAPPY LOVE SONGS HUH!!!”
“I knew it, the lyrics just suddenly got cheesier -- there had to be someone behind all of that”
And jihoon is just praying you won’t hear what they’re saying like “SHUT UP THESE WALLS ARE THIN”
Back at your apartment, it suddenly feels much emptier and lonelier
“What am i doing,,, I just met the guys for like two hours???”
You sigh and you try to busy yourself doing other things but you hear a loud commotion on the other side of the walls with just a bunch of incoherent shouting
You smile and laugh to yourself when you think about how close they all are
Your smile slowly fades when you start wishing you wanna be close to Jihoon and you’re like snAP OUT OF IT!!!
A couple of weeks pass by uneventfully but you notice that Jihoon has gotten more reserved around you
It’s just him being bashful around you and he panics every time he sees you but obviously he doesn’t want you to know that
You’re standing at your little mini balcony and admiring your cute little cactus plants
Just as you start thinking about him and his wellbeing, you hear your name and you’re like wHO’S THERE
You look down and see Jihoon staring back at you and honestly he looks like he’s awestruck by your whole beauty bc seriously everything you wear always looks super good to him
[insert photo]
(also pretend he’s holding plastic bags)
He holds up his hands and you’re laughing bc you know exactly what that means
“Come on up!”
There’s a knock on your door promptly afterwards and what do you know!!! It’s the man himself!!!
It’s just funny how the both of you have this ongoing routine that you know what to expect
When you let him in, he places the bags on your table and quickly smiles to himself when he sees your laptop on your bed
You and Jihoon both mindlessly do your respective roles as usual
He slowly comes out in the living room with your laptop and he’s like “so the album is pretty much done now,,, i can’t release all of the songs yet but there’s one i want you to listen to. I’ll show you after we eat”
You’re like ooo im excited and you start catching up with him as you’re eating
You can’t contain your excitement any longer, so as soon as you eat the last bit of your food, you’re like “oKAY SHOW ME IT NOW” as you’re restlessly shifting on your legs
He nods and pulls up the media player on your laptop. He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath before pressing play
It’s a melody you’re quite acquaintanced with after hearing it countless times at night, the same tune that lulls you to sleep
You have high expectations for this song, and surely he surpasses them with flying colors
You’re enjoying the song and telling him “wow this is a really good song!” when suddenly some lyrics catch your attention
You hear something about messy hair pulled back, ruffled clothes, eating meals
And you’re like huh that sounds a lot like us haha is that supposed to be me??
Jihoon is avoiding eye contact with you and looking down at his fidgeting hands as the song progresses in its later verses
The lyrics talk about wanting to develop a deeper relationship, one where “it’s okay to tell me anything, your hardships and desires. I just want to see you smile” and you’re like wait,,,,
And one of the final lyrics says something about “i can’t help feeling like this, will you accept my hand?” and you’re like wait wait w a i t
The song comes to an end and silence fills the room
You’re not sure whether you should speak up first or wait for him, but either way you’re speechless and wouldn’t know what to say anyways
Jihoon clears his throat awkwardly and stumbles on his words poor bby
“S-so, yeah,,,, I’ve been working on this one the longest,,,, umm do you,,, like it?”
But you know better that he’s not just talking about the song
“Nah sorry man i’m not interested”
“O.”
April fools kiddos ofc you are
“....yeah. I do like it”
And he finally brings himself to look at you and he’s like !!!!! really????
“Wait, for real??? You actually like it???”
He’s pretty much paralyzed in shock and all he can do is watch your hand move towards his and hold it
“I like it a lot, Jihoon :)”
He blinks slowly and he can’t fight the grin that spreads on his face as he grips your hand back
“I’m accepting your hand now heehee ^^”
“Okay let’s not talk about that”

An interview with: NOMVDIC
Tumblr media
Could you introduce yourself to the readers?
Hey I'm James from Nomadic. Or NOMVDIC or NOM∀DIC or whatever. sometimes we spell it with a V because we’re weird. but metals weird so who cares.
What led to the inception of Nomvdic?
The original drummer and guitarist of this band had a project called "Nomadic" which had recorded a 2-song EP with me. They asked me to fill in for a gig for them as their vocalist bc the actual dude couldn't make it. Over time, we hung out more and wrote some theatrical death metal songs about horror movies. We were asked to play a gig as a "Nomadic comeback show" even though it wasn't the same band. So we played as Nomadic and that just kinda became the band name, haha. Not sure how the V thing started, I think it was a group chat change back in 2016 and then we just kinda started doing that with our new logos.
'Euphoria' has been on repeat ever since the record was released, this album is a masterpiece, 2.5 years in the making definitely proves that. What is the album about, what insights can you tell new listeners when diving into 'Euphoria'?
Wow thank you for the love. Hearing something you've created and put time to is a "masterpiece" is always a shock and always awesome. so thank you. Euphoria is at its core is about feelings, but at its hidden core is about me and my feelings haha. The argument of the album is essentially that anything felt in an extreme way, even negatively, is Euphoria BECAUSE you are feeling. But, we get to that conclusion by telling some pretty horrific stories and then "giving up" in the 9th song. If you can, try to listen to the whole thing - it's quite the roller coaster haha. That being said, I think it can also be a fun listen without having to jam the whole thing or having to pay attention to all the lyrics and whatnot.
youtube
'Euphoriɐ' has officially been out for over a week now, you guys released the Billboard chart numbers, being an independent band were you guys expected to have such great numbers?
Honestly dude I worked my ass off on shooting for the stars on this and doing as best as I possibly could, but I definitely did not expect to get 8 chart positions. That's badass. Technically only 7 positions because 103 / 100 isn't a position BUT I thought it was insane that we were only 3 off from top 100 current albums. I'm blown away. It's mad cool.
Tumblr media
Since the whole world is on lock-down you guys had planned a CD release show/tour, word of mouth will still forever reign as a reliable carrier for news and excitement, what creative ideas have you come up with to combat not getting the word out about the release of the album?
I think staggering singles out every two weeks helped a lot with getting a lot of fans through Spotify, that was huge for us. I've been constantly trying to get press, and am working on ad ideas through Facebook and Google. I'm also going to start a "street team" type of Facebook group and come up with interesting merch drop ideas
As I was working on this interview I was listening to the album and the song "I've known you for so long but know nothing about you" stopped me dead in my tracks to actually listen and follow along with the lyrics, the lyrics feel extremely personal, what was the writing process like did you have to get into a certain headspace?
That's cool that you stopped and really looked into it dude, thank you. I'll just say this, man. Our last album was about freaking horror movies, haha. I had to get a lot of help with writing for this album, not because I can't write but because it was really hard to be truly vulnerable with my words for this album. I'm kinda happy things worked out that way. Like I know what the songs are REALLY about and what the lyrics really mean, but people can derive so much meaning for themselves out of the words. It's cool. I love this record and I love that song
youtube
When everyone receives the okay to resume to life as normal are you guys hoping to pick up where the last tour fell off?
Oh fuck the fuck yea dude. I want to be playing more than we ever played before. I want Euphoria all over the US and Canada and Europe. Hell, even fucking Australia. I wanna blow this up
Dream tour with NOMVDIC on the bill?
Oh, good question. Wow. Man, I'd LOVE to tour with bands like Oathbreaker, Deafheaven, Warforged, and Kardashev. I also think the direction of the last two The Devil Wears Prada albums suit our sound as well, so it would be so cool to tour with them. Also, Sleep Token, Code Orange, and Gojira are like my favorite bands, AND I heard Job for a Cowboy is coming back. Not to mention incredible bands like Rivers of Nihil and The Contortionist. Honestly, any combination of any of the above would be a dream come true.
Anything else you would like to tell the readers before we go?
Please! Jam Euphoria! We have a full album visual stream up on YouTube, and all of our music is on Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, and all that good stuff! Buy some merch! Thank you for all the love everybody, it means the world.

BC native Kristin Carter has had a busy and productive run over the last couple of years, and what’s happening right now is maybe the wildest piece of it to date.
The two-time semi-finalist in the Top of the Country contest, Carter has recently released her debut single (and video) with SteelHead Music, Karma as well as a cover of Blake Shelton’s massive hit God’s Country to the excitement and appreciation of Canadian country music fans. As an emerging artist, the importance of this kind of success and exposure cannot be understated, and it is fantastic to see it coming for Kristin Carter.
We had the chance to catch up with Kristin by email to ask a few questions and to play a round of 5 Quick Questions and we’d like to thank her for sending over some awesome answers and playing along. Check out both parts of the Q&A, hit play on the videos for Karma and God’s Country, and stay tuned for more from Kristin Carter – because it’s coming!

Kristin Carter Q&A
Q. Your debut single, Karma and your cover of Blake Shelton’s God’s Country have both caught the attention of country music fans. Have you had a chance to take that in and enjoy it?
KC. It’s been super hectic since the songs got released! Releasing your first songs to the world is nerve racking but I try to remind myself to soak it all in, I’m really grateful for the response to the music and the support people have been giving me so far.
Q. You’ve got a great team at SteelHead that is known for embracing new artists. What has the experience been like working with Dallas Smith, and having Shawn Austin as a labelmate?
KC. My team is AMAZING. I’m so grateful for all that they do for me. I’m a die hard Dallas fan and have been for years, so to have someone that you idolize be championing you and investing their time in your career is pretty indescribable. I’m glad they took a chance on me, and I just hope I’m making them proud in return!
I’ve been friends with Shawn for a few years, we met performing around Vancouver. His growth as an artist has been great to watch, and I think I have to give him credit for getting my teams attention. Dallas first reached out after I posted a duet on Instagram with Shawn, so thanks bud!

Q. Canadian Country Music Week is always exciting, and this year in Calgary you were busy – do you have any highlights that you can share?
KC. The “Blue Jay Cafe” sticks out in my mind because it was such an intimate setting and a very unique opportunity to showcase my music. You’re right up close with all the audience, so you could see how they were soaking it all in and appreciating it so much. Plus, all my Calgary friends came out to that one, so it was great to see them. Also, Bamford Bash was a blast (say that 3 times fast), and being part of the CCMA official songwriters round are things I will never forget.
Q. You’re in a unique spot as the only artist to be part of both the 2018 and 2019 Top of the Country contest. How did those experiences help you move forward in your career?
KC. That contest was integral to my career growth. It was my first taste of national exposure and it really put me on the map in Canada, so to have that happen twice is pretty amazing and I feel very lucky to have their support two years in a row. It also allowed me to record at The Warehouse Studio twice. It’s such an iconic studio in Vancouver, it helped me look cool at family gatherings for a while!

Q. We know that you’ve got love for and have been influenced by Shania and Beyonce – so here are a couple tough questions…
KC. Love is an understatement… but I’ll let one that slide haha
A) Which Shania song do you think Beyonce should cover?
KC. You’re Still The One – Bey has the range to SMASH this ballad. I’ll be dreaming about this later
B) Which Beyonce song do you think Shania should cover?
KC. Daddy Lessons – A lesser known song, but it has a country sound so I think Shania would slay that.
Q. You’re going to be at The Commodore with Tebey on The Good Ones Tour to kick off 2020, is there anything else you can tell us about what’s coming for you in the new year?
KC. Yes!! So exciting. The Commodore is such a storied venue in Van, I can’t wait to rock that stage and open up for Tebey. I’ll have to make a “denim on denim” outfit in his honour to thank him for the opportunity.
We have lots of new and exciting music coming down the pipeline, so stay tuned! I can’t wait to share it.

Brian Chase Interview: The New York Drones
Tumblr media
Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Brian Chase performing his Drums and Drones solo project
BY JORDAN MAINZER
For the casual listener, it’s easy to simply categorize Brian Chase as the drummer of massive indie rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs. But while that band has released only four albums in almost two decades, Chase has become a prolific leader in the New York experimental and improvisational jazz scene. For over ten years, he’s dedicated time to Drums and Drones, an ambient percussion project equally inspired by LaMonte Young/deep listening and the output of Chase’s close friend John Zorn. Drums and Drones expands your notion of what percussion can sound like; the three collections of tracks share overall themes and a tuning system but not much else. The recordings are improvised and treated with little post-production. “With each track, there’s structure that’s composed and pre-determined,” Chase told me over the phone earlier this month. “But the details within that framework come about through the performance at the moment.”
The project started in 2007, with the first batch of material completed in 2011 and released in 2013. (“It took me a while to figure out what I was doing,” Chase said.) When he considered releasing Drums and Drones II, he was already thinking about the third installment. Fast forward to last Friday, and Chase has released all three installments in a triple CD and book entitled Drums & Drones: Decade. It’s the first album on a new label he’s started, Chaikin Records.
The second Chaikin record isn’t far behind: It’s the recorded debut of Chase and Ireland-based saxophonist Catherine Sikora. Untitled: After is much more traditional improvisational jazz duo music. It’s out July 13th. The third record will be a release from 13 Million Year Old Ghost, which he’s kept under wraps. During our conversation, however, he revealed it would be a solo record from none other than YYYs guitarist Nick Zinner.
Chase brings Drums and Drones to Constellation this Sunday with video artist Ursula Scherrer. Read the rest of our conversation, edited for length and clarity, during which Chase talks about the history of Drums and Drones, his new label, and balancing being a new dad with being a working musician.

Since I Left You: Did you want to make the compilation specifically as your first record for the new label?
Brian Chase: Yeah. It kind of came about step by step. I had a new Drums and Drones record in the can--Drums and Drones II--and then a friend of mine suggested I re-release the first album which came out in 2013. He said, “You should put them together.” Thinking about it more, I had an idea to make a third record. So I put them together. What started as one release turned into a double release, which became a triple release.
I was thinking I could put it out digitally, or just CDs. But nobody buys CDs anymore, and I love LPs, but a triple LP is expensive. So I was thinking about what medium would best represent this material. [The answer was] a book!
SILY: How much does the release give you an opportunity to reflect on how far the project has come since its beginning and since when the first record was released?
BC: I guess it makes me appreciate the different forms it can take. The basic concept for the project has remained the same throughout. Each album represents a different aspect of that same concept. With all this experience, I can look back and appreciate these different ways.
SILY: Looking through the book, it struck me that you talk not only about your overall process but the context behind each track. How important is that detailed context to the type of music you make?
BC: Sometimes, it can be hidden, and sometimes it can be revealed. What’s exciting about this music is the process as well as the final product. Each of the compositions function as etudes--they explore a specific topic or technique. I find each technique poetic in a way--it carries a special significance. I felt it was meaningful to relay those details to the audience.
SILY: Similarly, there’s an entire page on the Chaikin Records website listing your influences.
BC: I think it’s really important because I see myself and the label as one small part in a larger community. Each individual is doing something different, but we feel a strong kinship with one another. We wouldn’t exist or do what we’re doing without the influence of one another. I’d like people to recognize that and feel the label as a way to connect with other members of my community. I definitely feel that bond is important, and it’s good to let people know.
There’s a link to playlists at the bottom of that page, and most of them are based on a radio show I host at a Brooklyn radio station called The Lot.

SILY: How does your approach when working with Catherine differ from Drums and Drones?
BC: With Drums and Drones, I’m interested in exploring very specific techniques and details related to the drum. It’s much more sound-oriented. It has much more to do with the resonance of sound waves. The project with Catherine is straight, traditional instrumental improvisational performance.
SILY: What did you hope to convey with yours and Catherine’s recorded debut?
BC: Catherine is a phenomenal saxophonist and improviser. When we perform together, it feels great. The energy is incredible. We really complement each other’s sound. I wanted to convey our music together and the sound of that artistry.
SILY: The third release on the label is the 13 Million Year Old Ghost record. Can you tell me a bit about that?
BC: It’s the solo project of Nick Zinner, who plays guitar with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. He has this instrumental project he’s been doing on and off for the last few years. It’s dark guitar and synth music.
SILY: What would you say is the percentage breakdown of how you spend your time among projects?
BC: Things come in cycles. There are times when the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are really busy. Now’s a big Drums and Drones time. That’ll probably continue until the end of the month, and then stuff with the Catherine record will probably pick up. Then, it’ll go back to Drums and Drones. I’ll do some improv gigs in town, and it’ll go back between different projects.
SILY: Do you still gig pretty much every night?
BC: That pretty much goes in cycles, too. Now, I have a kid, so that really changes things. It’s definitely inspiring in its own way but impacts the gig schedules.
SILY: How have you adapted to the challenge of being a working musician and a parent?
BC: Greater efficiency. When I have the time for myself, it’s really precious, so I use it to the max.
SILY: How was your experience playing on the most recent Man Forever record Play What They Want?
BC: That was actually an excerpt from a recording session I did with [John Colpitts aka Kid Millions] years ago. It wasn’t actually there for the record, but he had some material I recorded with him from a while back, and he thought it would be good for his new record, so he put it on there.
John is a really close friend of mine, and we’ve played a lot together. So he wanted to include some of my playing on the new Man Forever record. It sounds great.
SILY: What have you been listening to lately?
BC: I checked out the new Mary Halvorson record Code Girl. I was really diggin’ that. There was a band from Kingston, Ontario I heard recently that I was digging, too. They’re called Deux Trois.
