These images, captured by Alex Davies, are from an early version of my work in development, Shivah, which I performed as part of LIVE DREAMS: THRESHOLD curated by Victoria Spence and produced by Performance Space and Carriageworks.
Shivah is a performance art piece that explores the intersections between mental health, intergenerational trauma, spirituality, and mourning through reflections on my family history.
My paternal grandparents, Alick and Sue, married in 1949. Alick was subsequently disowned by his Jewish family for marrying a non-Jewish woman. His family sat shivah, a Jewish ritual of mourning, symbolically declaring him dead to them. Alick suffered a breakdown in the 1960s and was diagnosed with “manic depression”. He died from a brain haemorrhage in 1967 when my father was sixteen years old. A number of my family members have since struggled with mental health problems, including one who took her own life. Like my grandfather, I also live with depression and I wish to spare my son the same fate, if I can. My performance engages with this personal history and with the broader themes related to mental health, death, and intergenerational trauma, through one particular custom from shivah, the covering of mirrors.
I have been supported in the development of this work by my mentor and friend Alan Schacher.

William Yang is of course the coolest dude of all time he almost single-handedly preserved this city's queer history post-AIDS through his photography but also I will never forget the time I was sitting behind him in the audience at a carriageworks panel about lgbt spaces in Sydney and he was playing solitaire on his phone

Break down moment today … sigh
Bella came to my rescue with Sam tho wah they brought sooo many snacks and sat in my room with me and told me about their days and the places that Sam would camp in the blue mountains during covid. Bella observed the peppermint oil - ofc they did - they love nice smells so much. I showed Bella the album I’ve been making for her and they loved it. I told Bella and Sam that they made me feel so much better and Bella said that made them really happy too. Gah I feel grateful. And I feel proud of myself for just finally giving in and admitting I’m not okay right now. Also proud of myself for taking the food crip rave shift. I can’t believe it’s the person I met at firstdraft who I’m working with - the one that was like heyyy friend! (At Carriageworks when we reunited) and that also makes videos when they’re at work and is like lol fuck capitalism and talks abt massaging time… they actually emailed me a while ago (I have checked now) and wah it makes me so happy that they are also like, so nice to have a reason to reach out to you! I have such trust in this funny person already, I knew our paths wud intertwine again 💖 thank u universe…….
And there’s a new season of blown away, im so happy

2013 was a busy year for Collarbones. We played about 40 shows that year alone.
We brought in 2013 by supporting Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Midnight Juggernauts on the central coast of NSW.
Made a quick stop at Sugar Mountain where we were broadcast on Boiler Room and played amongst Dirty Projectors, ESG, HTRK and Laurel Halo.
Travis played the Space Jam theme song at the Big Day Out silent disco with Animal Collective in Adelaide.
We then rigorously toured with Jessie Ware, Clubfeet, Chela and How to Dress Well.
Russell Crowe came to the Jessie Ware show after making friends with her on Twitter. She was an immaculate performer.
That guy Chris Lilley was at the Clubfeet show for some reason. Who invited him?
There was a party with Van She hosted by the Australian idol Rob Mills. Rob came up to Travis and stressed that Collarbones should be bigger than Frank Ocean.
We played at the Australian Museum amongst dinosaur fossils and News Corp did a photoshoot with us. Succession, eat your heart out!
The rigour continued as we did the rounds yet again with PVT, Dappled Cities and Owl Eyes.
Following that, we played Vivid, the Freemason’s Hall with Kaytranada, Carriageworks with The Presets, stopping off at Strawberry Fields. We were destitute but felt so rich.
At the very end of 2013, we were asked to play with one of our favourite overseas bands, Deerhunter.
They’ve been nothing but extremely lovely each time we have interacted.
2013 was capped off by us receiving this glowing review of our Deerhunter support slot. Those 40 shows paid off!
What a year it was.
