In anticipation of the (now virtual) New York Caribbean Week and the annual Labor Day Parade, this August we're highlighting artworks in the Museum's collection that celebrate the presence of Caribbean culture and its diasporas.
Born in Cuba to Jamaican parents, Art Smith grew up in the neighborhoods of Downtown Brooklyn and Bedford-Stuyvesant. In this portrait, Smith wears his Linked Oval Necklace, displaying his trademark use of open lines, negative space, and material elegance. On the wall behind him we see a picture of four-year-old Arthur and his baby brother, Marcus, who died of scarlet fever just a month after their picture was taken. Smith had a strong connection to his family and heritage. His older sister Ina taught him Spanish and, along with his mother Mary, helped buy his first art supplies. Both women were supportive of his artistic ambitions, opening the way for him to become the prominent modern artist he is recognized as today.

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Africa witnessed an explosion of missionary activity. The success of missionaries during this period was due in large part to the onset of colonial rule, which made clear to Africans the benefit of European education.
Robin Horton writes: “With the advent of the twentieth century … Europeans came to be seen as symbols of power, and Christianity itself came to be seen as part of a larger order, comprising Western education, colonial administration, commerce and industry, with which everyone had henceforth to reckon. These changes created a much more favorable climate for conversion.” (Horton 1971, 86). The provision of education soon became the main reward used by missionaries to lure Africans into the Christian sphere, and so much so that even by the late colonial period, nearly all education was still provided by missionaries.
The decision of where to locate foreign mission stations is of central importance for the empirical analysis. A number of factors played a role in determining a mission’s location. Among the most important were access to a clean water supply, the ability to import supplies from Europe, and an abundance of fertile soil that could be used to grow crops (Hildegard Binder Johnson 1967). The locations of missions also exhibited a form of path dependence. The routes of initial missionary explorers determined which parts of Africa were the most well-known
Tumblr media
From these first stations, larger networks of stations, that together formed a series of trans-shipment points from the coast to the interior were developed. By creating these networks, missionaries could penetrate deep into the interior while maintaining access to supplies from Europe. The colonial railway network also provided an additional means of remaining connected with Europe, and therefore was another factor that affected mission locations.
The final factor of importance was the slave trade. Missionaries sought to bring an end to the slave trade within Africa, and thus a concerted effort was made to locate mission stations in areas where slavery was prevalent (Johnson 1967). In the analysis, I am careful to control for these potential determinants of the locations of mission stations. If these factors have an independent impact on long-term conversion, then not properly accounting
Tumblr media
The early planters of Christianity did not intend to enter into the thoughts world and patterns of the Africans, into their religious psychology, their ethos, and ethical conceptions and values. Struck and shocked by those gross and transient aspects of our culture, the missionaries shuddered and glossed over the positive merits of our cultural institutions.
Christian missionaries in their invisible if inculpable anthropological ignorance of the Africans conceived or seemed to have conceived their mission as that of imparting not only the Christian religion, but also culture and civilization-and the Western civilization precisely. The battle of the cross and the crescent and other local studies revealed certain major characteristics which formed a pattern in missionary expansion.
When the humanitarians and evangelicals turned their attention to overseas mission and away from alleviating the dismal by-products of early industrialization in England, they had to depend on the aid of the colonial governments.
Tumblr media
Toyin Falola asserts that there were some missionaries who believed that "the agenda of colonialism in Africa was similar to that of Christianity".
Falola cites Jan H. Boer of the Sudan United Mission as saying, "Colonialism is a form of imperialism based on a divine mandate and designed to bring liberation – spiritual, cultural, economic and political – by sharing the blessings of the Christ-inspired civilization of the West with a people suffering under satanic oppression, ignorance and disease, effected by a combination of political, economic and religious forces that cooperate under a regime seeking the benefit of both ruler and ruled.
Tumblr media
Edward Andrews writes: Historians have traditionally looked at Christian missionaries in one of two ways. The first church historians to catalogue missionary history provided hagiographic descriptions of their trials, successes, and sometimes even martyrdom. Missionaries were thus visible saints, exemplars of ideal piety in a sea of persistent savagery. However, by the middle of the twentieth century, an era marked by civil rights movements, anti-colonialism, and growing secularization, missionaries were viewed quite differently. Instead of godly martyrs, historians now described missionaries as arrogant and rapacious imperialists.
Christianity became not a saving grace but a monolithic and aggressive force that missionaries imposed upon defiant natives. Indeed, missionaries were now understood as important agents in the ever-expanding nation-state, or "ideological shock troops for colonial invasion whose zealotry blinded them
Tumblr media
Adriaan van Oss wrote: If we had to choose a single, irreducible idea underlying Spanish colonialism in the New World, it would undoubtedly be the propagation of the Catholic faith.
Unlike such other European colonizing powers as England or the Netherlands, Spain insisted on converting the natives of the lands it conquered to its state religion. Miraculously, it succeeded.
Introduced in the context of Iberian expansionism, Catholicism outlived the empire itself and continues to thrive, not as an anachronistic vestige among the elite, but as a vital current even in remote mountain villages. Catholic Christianity remains the principal colonial heritage of Spain in America. More than any set of economic relationships with the outside world, more even than the language first brought to America's shores in 1492, the Catholic religion continues to permeate Spanish-American culture today, creating an overriding cultural unity which transcends the political and national boundaries dividing the continent.
The Native Americans only gave way to the force of the European after they were overcome with the diseases the Europeans had spread. The Evangelization of the natives in the Americas began with private colonization. The Crown tried to establish rules to protect the natives against any unjust war of conquest. The Spanish could start a war against those who rejected the kings authority and who were aware and also rejected Christianity. There was a doctrine developed that allowed the conquest of natives if they were uncivilized.
Friars and Jesuits learned native languages instead of teaching the natives Spanish because they were trying to protect them from the colonists’ negative influences. In addition, the missionaries felt it was important to show the positive aspects of the new religion to the natives after the epidemics and harsh conquest that had just occurred
Tumblr media
The Spanish were the first of the future European countries to colonize North and South America. They came into the region predominantly through Cuba and Puerto Rico and into Florida. The Spaniards were committed, by Vatican decree, to convert their New World indigenous subjects to Catholicism. However, often initial efforts (both docile and coerced) were questionably successful, as the indigenous people added Catholicism into their longstanding traditional ceremonies and beliefs.
The many native expressions, forms, practices, and items of art could be considered idolatry and prohibited or destroyed by Spanish missionaries, military, and civilians. This included religious items, sculptures, and jewelry made of gold or silver, which were melted down before shipment to Spain.
Though the Spanish did not impose their language to the extent they did their religion, some indigenous languages of the Americas evolved into replacement with Spanish, and lost to present day tribal members. When more efficient they did evangelize in native languages. The introduction of writing systems to the Quechua, Nahuatl and Guarani peoples may have contributed to their expansion.
In the early years most mission work was undertaken by the religious orders. Over time it was intended that a normal church structure would be established in the mission areas. The process began with the formation of special jurisdictions, known as apostolic prefectures and apostolic vicariates. These developing churches eventually graduated to regular diocesan status with the appointment of a local bishop. After decolonization, this process increased in pace as church structures altered to reflect new political-administrative realities.
Ralph Bauer describes the Franciscan missionaries as having been "unequivocally committed to Spanish imperialism, condoning the violence and coercion of the Conquest as the only viable method of bringing American natives under the saving rule of Christianity." Jordan writes "The catastrophe of Spanish America's rape at the hands of the Conquistadors remains one of the most potent and pungent examples in the entire history of human conquest of the wanton destruction of one culture by another in the name of religion

Cuba Travel Tips
Havana, Cuba trip report and pro tips for a safe, personalized family travel adventure to Cuba.
Tips for family travel to Cuba - A guide to exploring Cuba with kids, friends, family or multigenerational groups.
Tumblr media
Did you know that you can in fact still travel to Cuba independently?
Updated: July 2019 with new Cuban travel rules.
We cruised prior to the US restrictions. You can however, still enjoy these Cuban tours by traveling by air to Cuba. Keep reading for more details.
Our family of six enjoyed a 5 night Key West and Cuba overnight cruise aboard Royal Caribbean’s Majesty of the Seas in December 2018 prior to the cruise ship restrictions. We traveled with four kids ages 13, 10, 7 and 5 and thus felt that a cruise was a comfortable way for us to explore Havana. We’re hooked and already planning a return land trip in order to enjoy more of the island. The Cuban people were gracious, funny and talented. Our guide Dayami is fluent in both English and Spanish and a breath of information about the history, culture, art, music, architecture and food of the island.
2018 Cuban travel update: The U.S. announced new travel rules for Cuba. Americans can no longer travel to the island under the People to People category as an individual and you're unable to patronized any military - owned business.
Legal travel to Cuba is still possible under the Support For The Cuban People category and my recommended tours can assist you in planning a safe, educational and cost effective trip to the island.
Have Kiddos Will Travel Cuba Tours offer: A one of a kind safe, private tour option for those wanting to visit Cuba and experience it like a local.

What we did in Havana:
Dayami picked us up at 9:00 am at the Saint Francis of Assisi Square
(the plaza right across from the cruise ship terminal in Old Havana).
We started with a guided walking tour in Old Havana (about 2 hours) which included:
-       All four main squares
-       Some of Hemingway’s favorite places in the city
-       Handcrafted perfume shop - the perfume is inexpensive and comes in beautiful hand made pottery.
-       Free entrance museums - our kids loved these museums. We had to drag our 10 year old son out of the art museum.
-       Cigar/coffee/rum shopping - Dayami was an angel and sat with our kids at a nearby table while my husband and I enjoyed this amazing tasting. I can’t recommend it enough. There was a live band playing during our tasting. In fact, music and dancing was everywhere in Havana. Buy Cuban coffee (I regret not buying more as gifts). Dayami is incredibly knowledgeable about Cuban rum and cigars. We bought two boxes (4 bottles total) of Havana Club 3 year white and 7 year dark rum for approximately 20 CUC. We also brought back 25 (fiftieth anniversary) Cuban Cohiba cigars. We bought handmade individual cigar boxes for the ones that we gave as gifts.
We did a coffee-rum-cigar tasting/sampling. This service (about 1 hour) is provided by a Habanos sommelier Cuban cigar expert). I highly recommend this tour option. We learned so much and it added to our overall experience in Havana.
After the walking tour, Dayami had a air conditioned car with ready to drive us to the main places of interest in the city. I loved that she was flexible and worked with our children. We took extra breaks for water, snacks and to use clean bathrooms. She knew all of the best places to use the facilities and though I was prepared with my own toilet paper, we ended up never needing it.
Our family’s personalized itinerary:
-       Ride along the Malecon (sea wall drive)
-       Colon Cemetery (World Heritage Site)
-       Callejón de Hamel (rumba performances/Afro-Cuban religion/art scene)
-       Central Park
-       Capitol building
-       National Hotel
-       San Jose Handicraft market
-       Fusterlandia community/art project
-       Revolution Square
-       Rainforest of Havana (National Park)
-       Bay fortresses and the Christ of Havana (viewpoint)
Dayami made a reservation for us a privately owned restaurant and we enjoyed it. We were lol a bit when we arrived because we literally walked behind a normal looking home in Havana and entered a massive outdoor restaurant which was packed with people and even had a live band. Our total lunch cost was 74 CUC which included drinks, 3 orders of chicken and all you can eat white rice and beans.
The whole tour was from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, take into consideration that lunch may took over an 1 hour.
What to buy in Cuba:
- While cigars and rum are the main things that people buy when in Cuba, we also bought an amazing art piece (beware that customs will attempt to charge you art fee if you travel back with it in an art tube), engraved leather baseballs, Cuban key chains that I then turned into Cuban Christmas ornaments and a small piece of wood art. We ran out of time to stop by Clandestina, but they do have an online shop that you will not want to miss.
Pro - tips: - Everyone (including children) will need a passport book (not a passport card) that is valid for at least 6 months after your trip. Two pages are required for entry - exit stamps.
- Each traveler will need a Cuban Visa if you're a US citizen (please research Visa laws for other countries) which cost $75.00 per person. Take your time completing this simple form, as mistakes are not accepted and you will have to buy another one.
-   U.S. credit and debit cards generally do not work in Cuba. Bring cash to cover your stay. The Cuban government requires that travelers declare cash amounts over 5,000 USD. Travelers should note that the Government of Cuba charges a 10 percent fee for all U.S. dollar cash conversions; this does not apply to electronic transactions or cash conversions in other currencies. - US dollar and credit cards are not accepted in Cuba. Do your research regarding how much money you will need and plan accordingly.  I recommend changing money into Cuban Convertible Pesos (CUC) before meeting your guide (for lunch, souvenirs, rum, the sampling, etc.). It is recommended that you change US currency to Euros prior to your trip (AAA will do this without an additional conversion fee for members) and then change euros to CUCs upon arrival. At the time of our visit   The official exchange rate (at the time of our trip in 2018) is 0.87 for every 1 USD (due to the 13 percent US dollar fee). The exchange rate for the euro at the time our trip was 1.15.
-  The export of Cuban convertible pesos (CUC) is strictly prohibited, regardless of the amount. When departing Cuba, U.S. travelers are advised to exchange Cuban convertible pesos (CUC) back to US Dollars well before reaching airport security checkpoints to avoid potential confiscation of the CUC. For other currencies, travelers may export up to the equivalent of 5,000 USD. Anyone wishing to export more than this amount must demonstrate evidence that the currency was acquired legitimately from a Cuban bank. - Dayami was very helpful in regards to helping us figure out how much cash we would need for all of our tours, meals, and shopping.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Getting there:
- You can fly to Havana depending on your group size and family needs. We’ve had family members fly and we did an overnight Havana cruise with Royal Caribbean as we were traveling with small children and wanted access to the comforts of the cruise line. Cruising if no longer an option as of June 2019.
Where to stay:
- If you’re flying, I highly recommend Casa Habana for a one of a kind, local Cuban experience.
What to pack:
- Bring sunblock, hats, and sun glasses. I packed a back pack with safe drinking water, snacks and treats for our kids.- Wear comfortable walking shoes. Havana streets are beautiful, but the cobblestone is hard on your feet.
Tumblr media
What NOT to do:
- Leave your jewelry and fancy items at home.
- Don't take pictures of Cuban police or military.
- Keep your strong tourist opinions about Fidel, the Castro family, the Revolution or communism to yourself. Avoid discussing politics (history discussions are okay) and you're good.
- There are two currencies in Cuba. The first is the Cuban Convertible Peso CUC  (which tourists use) and is worth 26 Cuban Pesos CUP. Count your change and keep your street smarts about you.
- Don't expect to have access to the many comforts of home. There is almost no access to many of the consumer goods that are common for us in the United States. So, make sure to bring that which you can't live without. If you wan't toothpaste, a toothbrush, toilet paper, hand disinfectant, mints or snacks, make sure to bring them with you.
- Print out all of your relevant travel documents prior to your trip. I know, we’re digital people but access to technology in Cuba is pretty much nada. If you think you’ll need it, print it at home.
- We’re big foodies and thus find it crucial to discuss Cuban food in Havana versus Cuban food in the United States and other parts of the world. Due to trade restrictions and general lack of access to ingredients that we take for granted, (our guide Dayami did a great job explaining the Cuban rations to our kids) we found the food to be good enough, but not something to write home about. The saving grace was that our kids love white rice and beans and literally were “starving” from all of the walking. They ate their food and loved it, with no complaints. Pro tip: if you’re traveling to Cuba, pack some salt and hot sauce. You’ll thank me.
- Book your Cuba tours before you travel. The internet is hard to come by in Cuba and thus, don’t expect to be able to research or use the internet to communicate with tour guides while on the island. We arrived via a cruise ship, and I had all of my confirmation information from Dayami printed and I had confirmed pick up times and location with her while we were in Key West and still had internet service.
By booking a trusted private tour, you will save hundreds of US dollars on your excursion time while on the island. Our tours are priced per car, not per person for a group of four and can be coordinated to accommodate larger family - group sizes.
- Lastly, let’s talk about safety. We’re a family of avid travelers. Our kids have had passports since they were newborns and we travel extensively throughout the United States and abroad. This cruise to Cuba was our third cruise in 2018 alone and all six of us are Diamond Crown and Anchor with Royal Caribbean International. Even with all of the stamps in our passports, I was perplexed by how safe we felt in Havana. Despite what our history classes and news tell us about communism and Cuba, we felt safer in Cuba than any other place that we’ve traveled to. Use common sense and respect the local culture and you’ll have a blast.

Florida Treasure Hunters Unearth Trove of Silver Coins From 18th-Century Shipwreck

Florida Treasure Hunters Unearth Trove of Silver Coins From 18th-Century Shipwreck
Tumblr media
Treasure hunters on Florida’s southeastern coast have discovered 22 silver coins dating to a 1715 Spanish shipwreck, reports Denise Sawyer for CBS12 News.
The coins, valued at an estimated $5,000 to $6,000, washed up on Florida’s “Treasure Coast” when a storm system moved across the Gulf of Mexico and over the state on February 22, per Jan Wesner Childs of the Weather Channel. As winds of up to 40 miles per hour swept through the area and 13-foot-tall waves crashed offshore, friends Jonah Martinez, Cole Smith and Jeremy Prouty set out to search the beach for newly unearthed artifacts.
“It takes an element like that from mother nature to move the sand away in such a way that we can get down to the stuff from the 1700s and 1600s,” Martinez tells the Weather Channel. “ … Maybe [just] four times [per] year I can go out and pick up items from that era.”
As Martinez explains to WPTV, major storms carry away much lighter sand and leave heavier metal artifacts in shallow water by the beach, where they can be recovered with the help of a metal detector. Previously, the trio of treasure hunters has discovered belt buckles, pieces of porcelain, cufflinks and cutlery by combing the beach for artifacts or salvaging the wrecks of 11 treasure-laden ships lost in 1715.
The ships sank during a hurricane while carrying goods from Cuba to Spain. Only one vessel in the fleet, a French ship called the Grifón, escaped the storm intact.
Tumblr media
A selection of Spanish coins unearthed on Florida’s “Treasure Coast”
(Courtesy of Jonah Martinez)
The first modern salvage expedition to the so-called Treasure Fleet took place in 1928. Between 1932 and 1964, according to Jill Nelmark of Hakai magazine, Florida issued more than 50 salvage licenses, including one granted to treasure hunter Kip Wagner.
Wagner recounted his team’s discovery of artifacts worth an estimated $6 million in the January 1965 issue of National Geographic. The group recovered a 50-pound lump of silver “pieces of eight” coins, corroded black on the exterior but still shiny in the middle, as well as gold doubloons, jewelry and weapons.
Today, the Treasure Coast wrecks are a point of contention between treasure hunters like Martinez and marine archaeologists, both of whom have increasingly found themselves caught in contentious court battles centered on the question of who owns underwater heritage.
“Archaeologists regard themselves as protectors of history and the human story, and they see salvors as careless destroyers,” explains Hakai. “Salvors feel they do the hard grunt work of searching for ships for months and years, only to have them stolen out from under them when discovered.”
As USA Today’s Max Chesnes points out, Florida law requires recovery permits for those who hope to explore or recover artifacts on state-owned lands underwater—but this stipulation does not extend to public beaches.
In 2015, Martinez and a different crew of treasure hunters recovered 350 gold coins then valued at about $4.5 million. In total, he estimates that his finds, collected over a period of 24 years, are worth between $13 and $15 million. But Martinez, Smith and Prouty don’t plan on selling the coins they’ve found. Instead, they say they’ll either donate the artifacts to museums or keep them for their personal collections.
“It’s carrying on that tradition and being able to pass that on to future generations,” says Prouty to WPTV.

Obama Out: 3 Things the First Family Can (Legally) Swipe From the White House
Michael Reynolds/Pool via Bloomberg
On Friday, the new president, Donald Trump, will move into the White House. But equally monumental is the fact that Barack Obama will move out. He and his family will no doubt take with them many fond memories of living in 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., from sliding down the banisters (mostly the kids) to being staff-pranked by images of creepy snowmen (a strange phobia of the 44th prez). But recollections might not be all they take with them when the moving vans pull up to America’s most famous home.
After all, first families are constantly showered with jaw-dropping gifts from foreign diplomats, celebs, and others eager to curry favor. Michelle Obama received two sets of jewelry from the late King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, valued at $1.1 million. A bit less impressive, the Clintons were given boxing gloves by Sylvester Stallone. And the president of Indonesia gave George H.W. Bush a live Komodo dragon!
Are these presents theirs to cart to their next dwelling, or do former commanders in chief have to forfeit all of this swag once their time in office is up?
Well, it turns out these gifts aren’t technically theirs—unless they choose to take an unusual step.
The White House rules on swag
“As gifts are received, they go to the National Archive to be logged in and have their value established,” explains former U.S. diplomat Michael Montgomery. “Everything above $375—and the vast majority of things are below that limit—stays at the National Archive.”
Live gifts like Bush’s dragon are placed in the care of appropriate families or zoos. (You can see the lists of gifts received on the U.S. Department of State’s website.)
These presents are considered property of the United States, Montgomery says, and any gift the first family wants to keep must be purchased from the government at fair market value.
So if Michelle wants to don those million-dollar diamonds, Barack will have to reach deep into his pockets. Time to crank out that next autobiography!
Some former presidents and Cabinet members have indeed coughed up the funds to keep their favorites. George W. Bush purchased a $14,000 shotgun and bike gear totaling $532. After stepping down as secretary of state in 2012, Hillary Clinton purchased a $970 black pearl necklace given to her by the state counselor of Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi.
However, outgoing presidents are not allowed to purchase or take items that are given to the White House rather than themselves as individuals. It’s a rule that landed the Clintons in hot water over two sofas, an easy chair, and an ottoman from furniture company Edward Ferrell + Lewis Mittman. The Clintons assumed these were personal gifts, but muddled paperwork suggested otherwise. So, back the furniture went.
What will the Obamas keep?
The Obama family has received thousands of gifts since moving into the White House in 2008; they have ranged in value from that million-dollar jewelry set to a decidedly less valuable framed picture of Prince Harry. So which are the ones President Obama is most likely to shell out for? Here are our expert-vetted bets:
Lifetime passes to Wrigley Field
“The lifetime Cubs passes would be intriguing to him,” says Montgomery. Although he’s a devoted White Sox fan, Obama still has a soft spot for any sports team from his adopted hometown of Chicago—especially the newly crowned world champions. Indeed, the president seemed genuinely excited when he received this gift this week from baseball’s reigning world champs. Although the Obamas will be staying in DC for the near future, it will give them a good excuse to visit Chicago.
7 boxes of Cuban cigars
Obama quit smoking years ago, but such a fancy gift—with so much historical significance for the president who reshaped the United States’ relationship with Cuba—seems like it would be worth holding on to.
“He might want to keep the cigars … as long as he’s not caught by Michelle,” says Montgomery. The smokes were an official gift from the Cuban government. “Seven boxes of Cubans would certainly be above the $375 value limit—$4,158, in fact—and so he would have to pay for them.” That’s money well-spent!

Kenyan art
Of the more personal gifts Obama has received, it would make sense for him to hold on to those that speak to his Kenyan heritage. The president of Kenya gave Obama several pieces of art, including a miniature elephant statue, an oil painting of the African plain, and hand-sketched portraits of his family.
Even Bo and Sunny, the first dogs, made the family portrait.
Collins Okello
While Montgomery doesn’t foresee these going to Obama’s new DC digs, he thinks they’ll be kept in a place where the family can easily visit them.
“My guess would be the Kenyan gifts will ultimately go to Obama’s planned presidential library in Chicago,” he says. The library should be completed in 2020.
While some might think it’s weird that an outgoing president should have to pay for something that was handed to him as a gift, nothing in life is free, right? And after eight grueling years running the country, whatever Obama takes, we’d say he’s earned it.

Cuba’s Real Estate Market Shaken With End of Privileged Emigration to the US
Cuba's Real Estate Market Shaken With End of Privileged Emigration to the US / 14ymedio, Zunilda Mata 14ymedio, Havana, Zunilda Mata, 16 January 2017 – The sign is still hanging from the balcony. "For Sale," it says in big letters that can be seen from the street. But Jorge no longer wants to auction off the apartment on Emilia Street in Santo Suarez. With Barack Obama's decision to end the "Wet Foot/Dry Foot" policy, this 52-year-old Havanan has lost interest in obtaining, at any cost, the money to get him to the United States. The buying and selling and private homes was authorized in Cuba at the end of 2011, after having been prohibited for decades. Decree-Law 288, approved at that time, allowed the transfer of property between both "Cuban natural persons living in the country," and "permanent foreign residents of the national territory." After the authorization, numerous private real estate companies emerged, and a flood of classified announcements inundated the housing sections of digital commerce sites such as Revolico, Por el Techo, Cubisima and Casas Cubanas. Many of the property descriptions include, "Selling to leave, I'm in a hurry." "They are more likely to lower prices and accelerate the whole process, because they need the money as soon as possible" "The housing market has been fueled largely by houses whose owners have plans to emigrate," Juan Alberto Fonseca, an economist and manager of a small office in Vedado that helps interested people sell or buy a home, tells 14ymedio. "That motivation makes them more likely to lower prices and accelerate the whole process, because they need the money as soon as possible," says the specialist. The end of the program that allows Cubans to automatically obtain residence in the United States "will directly influence the number of houses in the market," he says. Since the implementation of the immigration reform in January 2013, some 671,000 nationals have traveled abroad. Of these, 45% have returned to the island, and of the rest, according to figures released this week in the daily official Granma, many have not yet been gone longer than 24 months, the maximum time away that had been set in the law if a citizen wanted to maintain the right to reside in Cuba. (Prior to the reforms the maximum time Cubans could remain outside the country while keeping the right to reside in the country was 11 months and, under the new agreement with the US, the Cuban government has said it will extend that time to four years.) Official figures do not specify whether travelers or emigrants have paid for their departure from the country with the sale of a car, a house, land or other properties such as appliances, jewelry or a cemetery plot. It has become common in recent years to exchange one's possessions for an amount that will allow emigrants pay visa fees, tickets, transportation and payment to the coyotes that lead to the US border. "We have sold everything, we can not go back," says Charly Medina, a Cuban who was stranded in Turbo this week and received "like a bucket of cold water" Washington's announcement that it was eliminating the immigration privileges enjoyed by the islanders. "With the sale of our house in Santa Clara we were able to get here, but we do not have anything else," he explains. Charly's story is also the story of many of those who have stayed on the road to the United States border. If they were deported to the Island they would face the harsh reality of not even having a place to sleep. "So far we have not noticed a drop in the number of houses for sale, but we are preparing for this measure to have an impact on the market," an employee of Zafiro Real Estate, located in the suburb of Miramar, tells 14ymedio. The real estate agent predicts that many will remove their homes "from the listings, so it is possible that there will be a rise in prices in the coming months." However, she believes that in the short term little will change. "The vast majority of those interested in emigrating do not yet believe that the United States will strictly uphold Obama's provision," she adds. The latest official figures, which are for the year 2013, indicate that the emerging real estate market reached about 80,000 transactions that year, double that of the previous year, according to Aniuska Puente Fontanella, a specialist at the Registry Office for Property, Commerce and the Heritage of the Ministry of Justice. The practice of two-part payments, the first in Cuba in convertible pesos (CUC) and the second in dollars or euros in the destination country of the seller, has become common in the national real estate market. The law, however, states that transactions must be made in Cuban pesos (CUP) or CUC. Each property's title establishes a minimum reference value in CUP for the dwelling. That is the value that is usually stated during the purchase transaction and, on that amount, the buyer pays a 4% tax on the transmission of goods and inheritance and the seller the same amount on personal income. However, the actual transaction is made for an amount that is often ten times the declared amount. Economist Juan Alberto Fonseca explained to this newspaper that "many owners prefer that part of the money be delivered to their family in Miami, Madrid or any other city to avoid having to take too much cash through the airport if they are going to emigrate."
