The idea that Daemon survived the fall after the Battle above God’s Eye is absurd (the idea that he abandoned his family so he could run away with Nettles is beyond that).

Daemon Targaryen loved his family more than anything, for starters. He loved his daughters, he loved his sons and he loved his wife/his Queen (the woman he waited years and years for). He would have never abandoned them at their time of need, especially during a war deciding the future of House Targaryen.

Secondly, our favorite Rogue Prince has always been highly interested in getting House Targaryen back in shape and at the height of the reign of Aegon the Conqueror. It was his life goal. He wouldn’t have abandoned that cause for anything. Prince Daemon Targaryen was one of the few true dragon lords House Targaryen produced.

If Daemon had survived that fall, he would have returned to King’s Landing with Aemond’s head on a platter, not hesitating to take pride in how he eliminated the Greens’ single ace card (and by that, I mean Vhagar. Aemond was nothing without her). And with that, he would have proved his unwavering loyalty to Rhaenyra, and protected the claims of their remaining children.

Daemon Betrays Rhaenyra.

This discourse has been here since I started posting so I should explain.

Daemon does, in fact, betray Rhaenyra when he saves Nettles and his subsequent actions in more than one way.

1. He doesn't punish the Mootons for their treason.

The Mootons are given a direct order from their queen to kill Nettles. They conspire and plot about ways to avoid the order, to carry it out, and possible consequences for that. By the end, they decide to disobey her and give the letter to Daemon under the false pretence that they hadn't seen it. They are made aware that the queen has a suspicion that Nettles is a witch charming the prince and still do this. None of this is known or punished, and they declare for the Greens.

2. He allows Nettles to escape.

When Daemon reads the letter, he stays with Nettles for the night and watches her escape on dragon back in the morning without interference. Choosing to leave Maidenpool and go to Harrenhall instead of what Rhaenyra called for, his urgent return.

3. He does not return to Rhaenyra.

By not returning to Rhaenyra, he disobeys and betrays her. By letting Nettles escape, he disobeys and betrays her. Nettles is specifically tied to his survival in the narrative. Without her at his side, it is impossible for him to survive.

4. He fights Aemond, Alone.

So he dies. The bards and I have a misunderstanding because of this (fuck the bards) but Daemon himself says that neither one of them can take Aemond on and survive. He chooses death.

We can argue over why he did it, but in the written narrative, the only catalyst we have is Nettles' departure. Before that, we can see his expression go from happy and them small talking to him, genuinely distraught by the letter and staying with her for the night.

Saying that this is only because of Rhaenyra fundamentally misunderstands one point:

The catalyst for the Battle Above the God's Eye is Nettles' departure. Before it, Aemond evaded Daemon, and Daemon stayed at her side. Both in the book and more so the show, known reactionary Daemon Targaryen would not have hesitated to prove himself, at least bringing her to the court to prove their loyalty.

This is not a man who has made a plot against Rhaenyra to ruin her, oh no this is a man who drinks to tame the pain/lust all of the feelings for a woman he isn't supposed to want. He has done the deed and paid for the rumors to be spread, he should be happy. Daemon has the self-esteem to be a king, he has won wars, and he isn't going to let some knights or his brother treat him like he is lower than them, he has standards and now he lets the king beat him like he is a common dog. He could have gone to some whore exactly as Rhaenyra said but he didn't he went somewhere to hide and drink himself to death. There is way more in him, he knew he shouldn't have done this to Rhaenyra she even might hate him and maybe that's what he wants so they would not let each other have one another. Well, destiny is a destiny it has to happen and we have spoilers/ trailers so let's enjoy the ride.

I love the fact that Daemon unlike all the others wants to make Rhaenyra understand that, although she is a "woman-grown", she can still be in control of herself and her being.

Viserys still sees her as a "just a girl" (most likely because for a father a daughter is never old enough) and as a political pawn so he forces her into that role that is tight for her.

Alicent sees her as what she couldn't be so with jealousy, which is why she reacts badly to the virginity argument, because Rhaenyra could choose her lover.

Otto sees it as an obstacle to be eliminated and to do so he uses any means possible.

Only Daemon sees Rhaenyra for what she is, a young woman discovering her being. I love that he explain her that marriage is a duty but that marriage doesn't preclude to find pleasure elsewhere.

"Marriage is a duty... Yes. But that doesn't stop us from doing what we want. From fucking who we want."

I love the fact that he wants to free her from labels, free her in general and make her discover her sexuality.

Then I believe that everyone is free to interpret their relationship as they want, I personally do not think that he is using her to get to the throne indeed I believe that he is really fond of her and this scares him because it is a situation out of his control. I believe that his:

"I want Rhaenyra. I'll take her as she is, and we'd her in the tradition of uor house."

is an explanation of Daemon's feelings.

And above all I find it amazing when Viserys exclaims that no one will want Rhaenyra in marriage since she is no longer a maiden, Daemon replies that he does not care what the Lords think, because for him Rhaenyra is not a trophy to be exhibited, but a person, and that the fact that she is no longer a maiden says nothing about the woman that Rhaenyra really is.

Daemon and Rhaenyra are two sides of the same coin just as Viserys points out.

"Daemon and Rhaenyra shared the blood of the Dragon. They are restless and chaotic."

Ok, I just have to say this: nobody finds it even a little strange that at one point someone mentions in the book that Daemon was cheating on Rhaenyra with Mysaria, and that Rhaenyra was totally fine with it and gave them her blessing, but when Daemon was supposedly cheating on her with Nettles, she flipped out?

Where is the truth here?

Was she or was she not ok with Daemon sleeping around during their marriage? Was he even cheating on her to begin with?

I have already made a pretty big post about how Daemon is most definitely not a “cheater”, so I will not bother once more. The signs are rather obvious, and more and more I am believing that all the reports of him sleeping around during his marriage to Rhaenyra are pure fabrications.

Daemon was a lot of things, but he waited for years to finally have Rhaenyra all to himself and then what…you’re telling me that he starts sleeping around with a former mistress who is way older than his wife or that he takes for a mistress a girl with no Valyrian features whatsoever (features which Daemon actually looks for in a woman he wants to bed)? The anti-Daemon and anti-Rhaenyra propaganda in the book is so obvious at this point.

devastated Daemon seeing his brother suffer...

wanting to inform him about what's happening behind his back... but at the same time not wanting to make him fee worse :"(

These two are the ONLY ONES that genuinely loved him, and they loved him so much :"( ...it's heartbreaking :"(

Had Viserys noticed this LOVE all those years ago... he would have made Daemon his Hand, give him Rhaenyra to take to wife, wed them in the tradition of their house, and together they would turn House of the Dragon to its proper glory, make it GREAT AGAIN.

They had all it took, Daemon and Rhaenyra loved Viserys, and they loved each other. They would've been a force no one would dare stand against... :"(

This is so heartbreaking... Viserys was so good... loving... but ultimately blind and easily manipulated... should've trusted his loved ones despite the fact neither Daemon nor Rhaenyra were perfect. But both of them saw right through Otto and the council RIGHT AWAY and wanted to help Viserys not be fooled or misguided. And they had what others surrounding Viserys never had: the undying and deep love for Viserys :"(
