Big Time Rush & Dixie D’Amelio – TD Pavilion at The Mann – Philadelphia, PA – June 28, 2022
Two words perfectly describe last night's Big Time Rush concert at the Mann Center in Philadelphia – electric and nostalgic. It's not often you can head out on a Tuesday night, re-live your childhood, get "Rick Rolled," sing, dance and leave covered in sweat and colorful confetti.
Tumblr media
Now, back from their six-year hiatus, the guys of BTR – Kendall Schmidt, James Maslow, Carlos PenaVega and Logan Henderson – have hit the road again on their Forever Tour 2022! Like they told us back in December when we chatted with them at Q102's Jingle Ball, they have missed being on the road, their fans and making music together.
Tumblr media
Dixie D’Amelio opened the night and entertained the crowd as fans continued to pour into the stadium and the lawn above. Her set included her most popular tracks like “Be Happy” and “Wild.” Fans also went wild when she covered Carrie Underwood’s mega-hit “Before He Cheats.”
Tumblr media
During a short intermission, the stage crew lifted a Big Time Rush curtain while they prepared the stage for BTR's set. When the curtain fell with the guys poised to perform, the crowd went wild. The lights, their choreographed dance moves and back flips, all added to the fact that their harmonies and voices still sound great. They made it a night to remember for thousands of fans.
Tumblr media
BTR played an extremely long set with no complaints from their fans. They performed about two dozen songs, which was a perfect mix of their old and new songs. They opened the night with "Windows Down," "Music Sounds Better With You," and "Honey."
Tumblr media
The lighting was in every color of the rainbow, with awesome strobes synchronized to the music and dance moves. Confetti fell a few times in the evening, including during their hit song "Confetti Falling" and during their encore which included their biggest hit – "Big Time Rush." During their performance, the guys showed love and "pride" in support of all their fans that they lovingly call Rushers. Later in the set, the foursome left the stage, danced through the seats, performing, singing, hugging and wearing pride flags.
Tumblr media
And as mentioned earlier... It's not every day you get Rick Rolled, but we did last night! It was quite the surprise and fans lost their minds when all of the sudden, out onto the stage popped Rick Astley (who happened to be in town to perform with New Kids On The Block in the Mixtape Tour 2022) to sing his classic hit "Never Gonna Give You Up" with the boys! It was an awesome moment and not one person was in their seat, as they were all standing and singing every word.
Tumblr media
Other music that filled the summer air included "Love Me Again," "Halfway There," "Not Giving You Up," "Amazing" and "Boyfriend."
Tumblr media
The guys didn't miss an opportunity to engage with their fans. They answered questions, (and yes, James has had Lasik), shared stories and even picked one lucky fan to come up and sing "Worldwide" with them. All in all it was a high energy night filled with great music by a group that feels like old friends. If BTR is coming to a town near you, definitely check them out on the Forever Tour because you are in for a fun, nostalgic evening you will remember forever!

TICKET TO PARADISE (2022)
Starring George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Kaitlyn Dever, Billie Lourd, Maxime Bouttier, Lucas Bravo, Sean Lynch, Arielle Carver-O'Neill, Ling Cooper Tang, Charles Allen, Francis McMahon, Geneviève Lemon, Romy Poulier, Dorian Djoudi, Ilma Nurfauziah, Agung Pindha, Ifa Barry, Cintya Dharmayanti, Nom Gunadi, Inaya Servais and Ida Pandita Putu Wirata.
Screenplay by  Daniel Pipski.
Directed by Ol Parker.
Distributed by Universal Pictures. 104 minutes. Rated PG-13.
Ticket to Paradise is a fun, sometimes silly rom com filled with some of the most gorgeous views of Bali that you could imagine. The entire film could undoubtedly be turned into an advertisement for the Bali Tourist Bureau to sell a million trips.
The film is directed by British writer and filmmaker Ol Parker, known for his past romantic comedies in exotic locales like Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! and both The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel movies.
There is an exceptional cast. You really can’t go wrong with stars Julia Roberts and George Clooney because, while they already have built-in chemistry, they are both über talented and charismatic. Also let’s face it, like the scenery, they are also extremely attractive to look at as they continue to age so gracefully.
The story starts when Lily (Kaitlyn Dever) graduates from college. She leaves on a fun vacation to Bali with her crazy, often drunk roommate Wren, (Billie Lourd) before she is due to settle into her cushy law job back in the States. While partying through the vacation, Lily meets and falls in love with handsome seaweed farmer Gede (Maxime Bouttier). Somehow this extended vacation becomes the lead up to their traditional Balian wedding. Lily finds she is willing to give up all of her aspirations for a new one; to live in Bali with the man of her dreams.
When her divorced and always bickering parents – Georgia (Roberts) and David (Clooney) – find out about Lily’s upcoming nuptials, they decide to put their differences aside and work towards a common goal. That goal is breaking up the engagement and bringing their daughter home to live out her dream – or theirs – of being a successful lawyer. When they teamed up, I started enjoying the film more because the constant fighting early on between the two of them was somewhat over the top, in my opinion.
After joining forces, the two parents cause some bumps in the road for the couple but also learn a whole lot about themselves. Georgia’s current boyfriend/pilot Paul (Lucas Bravo) follows her around like a puppy dog and beyond giving David more fodder to throw his ex’s way, doesn’t seem to have much purpose.
The best scene of the film for me is when out at a bar as a group, David and Georgia relive one of their favorite memories from college – playing beer pong. After challenging the soon-to-be bride and groom to a game, with House of Pain’s 1992 hit song “Jump Around” blasting in the background, you are reminded why you love Julia Roberts and George Clooney so much as they dance around, goofing off and just having fun. No dialogue, just fun.
Although you won’t see any of this talented cast up on the Oscar stage for this specific film, it’s okay. It was still a fun, light film that’s easy to watch on a cold night and to fantasize about being in Bali… with Clooney, Roberts and some friends.

Rian Johnson
Peeling A Glass Onion
by Jay S. Jacobs
The new face of modern mystery may very well be Rian Johnson. The writer director is releasing Glass Onion the second film of a planned series of Knives Out mysteries which will be filmed for Netflix. The first Knives Out film was a huge hit with a more-traditional theatrical release a few years ago, leading the streaming giant to contract Johnson to create a whole series of Benoit Blanc mysteries, which has only the brilliant detective played by Daniel Craig in common. (Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery also had a brief theatrical run last month.
So, why does Johnson think that people enjoy old-fashioned parlor mysteries?
“I’m a puzzle nut myself,” Johnson explained to me recently on the red carpet at the Philadelphia Film Festival. “I love solving puzzles. There's always that element of our brains. The other thing about them – and this is why I love the genre – you think about [the story].”
They don’t call them brain teasers for nothing…
“You get a good mystery,” Johnson continued. “You get a rogue's gallery of interesting characters, all trying to kill each other. You get a charismatic detective at the center of it. What's not what's not to love? It's the most fun you can have [while] telling a story.”
Tumblr media
Johnson feels this is why the genre has such a resounding history and popularity.
“[The mystery] seems to always come back around, right?” he says, brightly.
As a longtime mystery fan, it seems only natural that Johnson has toyed with the genre for years. Even before hitting paydirt with his popular comic mystery Knives Out, the writer/director has always toyed with the conventions of mysteries on such earlier films as Brick, The Brothers Bloom, Looper, and even to a slight extent in his blockbuster Star Wars: The Last Jedi. He also has a new TV series coming on Peacock called Poker Face with Natasha Lyonne, which is said to be similar to the old Columbo mystery movies.
However, it was Knives Out that brought Johnson’s love of old-fashioned parlor mysteries into sharp relief. A classic locked-door mystery – with a wicked sense of humor and style – and an all-star cast including Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette, Michael Shannon and Christopher Plummer. It tells the story of a famous mystery novelist who dies mysteriously in his spooky mansion. Of course, his extended family are all sniping over his fortune as the body still hasn’t gotten cold. And Detective Benoit is always around, capturing clues and surreptitious conversations as he endeavors to find the killer.
Tumblr media
Knives Out took the old-fashioned mystery films and added a wonderfully modern, comic aspect which only added to the film’s popularity. The follow-up, Glass Onion, has Detective Blanc in the middle of a COVID-era murder party at the grand private island mansion of a tech billionaire (Ed Norton) which leads to real death. The suspects here are a group of college friends – all of which have become somewhat successful, but all of whom are having behind-the-scenes problems, played by Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, Leslie Odom Jr., Kathryn Hahn and Janelle Monae.
What were some of the classic mysteries that inspired Johnson to make the films?
“[Mystery] series in general,” Johnson said. “I was thinking about the Agatha Christie movies that were coming out back in the 70s – and her books. [One was] Death on the Nile with Peter Ustinov. On this movie, a huge influence is Evil Under the Sun with Ustinov as Poirot. It was a glamorous European vacation movie.”
It’s not all Christie films though, Johnson acknowledges.
“Also The Last of Sheila, which was so good. I keep trying to mention that because more people have to see that movie.”
Tumblr media
I noted to Johnson that, by total coincidence, that film was the first PG-rated movie I ever saw in a theater and has long been a favorite of mine. The 1973 mystery – written by the odd-couple screenwriting team of actor Anthony Perkins (Psycho) and musical theater icon Stephen Sondheim (Sweeney Todd) – was also about a murder mystery game in a yacht on the French Riviera which leads to a murder. It had a Nixon-era superstar cast of James Coburn, Richard Benjamin, James Mason, Raquel Welch, Dyan Cannon and a young, mostly unknown Ian McShane. It’s fun seeing the sly nods Johnson made to The Last of Sheila in Glass Onion, particularly during the early scenes.
Knives Out was a passion project in which Johnson had been working on the script for about a decade. After the popularity of that film, he has to come up with and film the follow-up in just a couple of years – mostly during the pandemic.
“That just was no pressure. No pressure,” Johnson laughed.
Hey, Agatha Christie wrote like 80 books, plays, poetry books, autobiographies and short-story collections in less than 60 years….
“Yeah, that's true. So, I'm slacking,” Johnson laughed again.
Well, maybe not quite slacking. But it was quite an experience to suddenly have to come up with a whole new mystery scenario, with only the Detective character in common with Knives Out.
“I came up with this one from scratch,” Johnson continued. “I started writing it after the first one came out and people liked it. It was a little scary at first, but you dive in, start working and then you're just doing your job and don't have time to think about it.”

Elsbeth: show so nice it premiered twice
First episode
okay so we're Only Murders In The Building-ing
If they're trying to make this any bit intentionally tied (even if not in same universe) to So Help Me Todd, I doubt it went as deep as casting Jane Krakowski because she was the original choice for Margaret but she does still keep up the tradition of Broadway guest stars on cop shows like this
Is Elsbeth just going to make friends with every person-we-know-is-the-culprit until she knows they're the culprit
(unless that'd accomplish the job and make the narrative shorter) just say he freaking threatened to shoot you
Elsbeth's wardrobe basically nicer Margaret Wright
bringing snacks (if that's even a snack and not just an abomination), is that good cop or just "mom cop"
hmm does casual drop of ADD from character set up as her narrative foil mean potential ADD Elsbeth reveal later
nice meta references there with the length of decree
I can't count how many procedurals-of-various-sorts (both cop and not, both realistic-fiction and supernatural) I've seen the whole handedness test trick in
That is not how I've ever heard tzuris said, by either of them
Okay heels on a treadmill how?
I take back what I said, more like Only Murderers In The Building
Nice twist at the end with the extra body
Second episode
oh hi Mitch, what are you wearing AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING
Not Elsbeth almost literally going attention deficit oo shiny
You go girl supporting other people and their hyperfixations
Didn't hit me until now that (in addition to her being good at both their specialties and dressing like Margaret while acting like Todd down to the neurodivergence) Elsbeth and Todd both work in the closet
nice expose of the reality TV process, I'm guessing the only way CBS let them get away with that is that The Amazing Race and Survivor are too different
And in true NYC-set procedural fashion a Broadway reunion in the guest star cast (Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Deborah S. Craig from the original cast of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee)
Even if I didn't know he did it I'd still find Skip's reaction bad acting
Loving Kaia letting her hair down both figuratively and literally bonding with Elsbeth over the show
And Katrisha just adding to the veiled-expose-of-how-things-work-in-reality
OK between the "silly women" thing, him turning Elsbeth's question about the memorial on the show being in poor taste into asking her if Kaia had poor taste liking the show and him basically telling them what they're supposed to do like he's running this show anyone else wanna kill Skip or at least do severe damage to areas they, well, can't show on TV
she actually got to explain herself and Wagner came this close to actually believing her
I know I've heard that piece they played at the memorial before, was that the freaking "Criminal Minds creepy music" or something
*Judy Hopps voice* "actually it's your word against yours"
okay between some of the meta talk earlier (and even in the previous episode), her echoing Skip's words about reality is my business, the episode cutting to black right after she said "can I say cut" and her first-person-narrating the trailers for what she's going to do, if (kayn ahora) the show lasts as long as I'd want there's the beginnings of a bit of a subtext of Elsbeth being a bit of an Abed

Deborah Secco simplesmente arrasou no visual.

All of this talk this season about the challenges of trying to have a personal life while also being obsessed with your work, I would just like to point out again my essay about how Deborah and Ava are comparable to Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner, comedic duo and romantic partners for 50 years.
Lily and Jane knew they couldn’t turn it off either and that didn’t stop them from being with the love of their lives and they made great work together.
While Lily is the more famous one of the two, Lily has always been 1000% supportive of everything her wife has done. When you see them together, you get a sense they’re complete equals. They’re equally inspired by and respect each other.
They made it work...there’s no reason why Ava and Deborah couldn’t.

It makes a play at it in the very start of the film. It loudly proclaims that, HEY, WATCH THIS MOVIE, IT’S ABOUT FREE SPEECH AND THE HOLLYWOOD BLACKLIST!!!!! And it does it as loud as it can… …and then it kind of forgets what the movie is about up until the last 15 minutes. However, the bulk of the movie does seem like the kind of film that would fit in the Hollywood Blacklist Era. The plot, the acting, the setting, all seems to be very much a 1950s feel good movie… …and then it veers off again and delivers on the 1st Amendment moral to end the film with a light heavy hand…if that makes sense. So, it feels disjointed, but in a way that oddly fits the premise to begin with. Almost as if it is trying to be a movie in a movie, which might have been the point. Watch it once, it will entertain you. Watch it more than once and you’ll be bored.

I s2g if season two just ends with Deborah and Ava going their separate ways and then… nothing else.
Like can you envision Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner going their separate ways? NO. No you cannot. They are a TEAM now.
These are two extremely messed up characters full of contradictions, messiness, secrets, lies, and G-d knows what else. Who in the world would ever think to end their storylines here? And for what reason? So the audience can fill in the blanks ourselves? This isn’t Mad Libs y’all.

Jim Carter, Kevin Doyle, Imelda Staunton and Michael Engler
Going Back to Downton Abbey
by Jay S. Jacobs
Downton Abbey was served at the Philadelphia premiere party for the movie of the beloved TV series.
Show favorites Jim Carter and Kevin Doyle, new cast member (and legendary British actress) Imelda Staunton and director Michael Engler met with fans, doing a quick Q&A at a party at Stratus Bar on the rooftop of the lovely Monaco Hotel on Chestnut Street, before retiring down the block to see a preview screening of the film at the Landmark Ritz at the Bourse.
The Downton Abbey fanatics were out in force, many dressed in period clothing, eating hors d’oeuvres served by waiters dressed as butlers and bartenders dressed as scullery maids. A sense of anticipation pervaded the rooftop bar, waiting for the stars and the film. The show has obviously become a phenomenon over the years. So, what is it about the show that has inspired this kind of adoration?
“No idea,” Kevin Doyle, who plays valet-turned-teacher Joseph Molesley, good-naturedly laughed to me before doing the Q&A, “I’ve been asked that hundreds and hundreds of times. I have no idea. I don’t know if it’s a fascination with the period, or the aristocracy.”
“There’s no simple answer to that,” agreed Jim Carter, who plays Downton butler Mr. Carson. “Nobody has ever been able to come up with a simple [explanation]. It’s a combination of many things. It’s almost a romantic view of the past.”
Tumblr media
“First of all, I think whoever you are in the world there is a way in,” surmised Michael Engler, an American filmmaker who directed several episodes of the series and now was behind the lens for the movie. “There is a character – or characters – that you can relate to. Aside from things that everybody can relate to, there’s all these odd little things about what life was like. It is fascinating to learn about, to see how other people dealt with things.”
“People like to go back to the safety and comfort of it,” Carter continued, “to a time when things seemed to be that everyone was in their place and satisfied with their place in life. Life was simpler. The upper crust was shown to be incredibly benign. The working class loyal and hardworking.”
“I think we’re looking back with rose-tinted glasses,” Doyle told me. “It wasn’t as easy as it looked. It’s also just the characters. The characters and the storylines. I think that’s it. It could be set almost in any period and any place. It’s the mixture of those characters which make it memorable.”
“Everybody is looking for love,” Carter said. “It’s about romance. Daisy the maid [Sophie McShera] is looking for love. Lady Edith [Laura Carmichael] is looking for love. Carson finds love. It’s a mixture of all of those things. It’s relaxing. It’s comfortable. You can simple down with it. Like I’ve said before, it’s like getting into a warm bath. We can relax with this.”
Now, the cast of Downton Abbey – or at least the ones who live downstairs – are drawing another bath. The TV series, which finished filming in 2015, has become a movie. Due to popular demand, the actors are returning to characters that they loved for six years.
Tumblr media
This state of affairs was more surprising for some than others.
“We knew early on they were going to make a movie, so we were expecting it,” Doyle explained. “It was just a matter of getting us all back together again, which is quite a feat.”
Director Engler thinks that statement may be stretching it a tiny bit. “Not really knew,” he said. “Never really knew, and I certainly didn’t know that they would necessarily ask me to do it. It started to become clear at a certain point that the fan excitement for it didn’t seem to be dying out. So, if Julian [Fellowes] could come up with a story that he was excited to write, then I think everybody felt like they would make the effort to get together.”
Not only did they make the effort to get together, they picked up some new cast members on the road back to Downton. Perhaps the biggest name is British actress Imelda Staunton, who has played such classic roles as Miss Umbridge in the Harry Potter movies, her Academy-Award nominated lead role in Vera Drake and dozens of other roles on stage, screen and television.
However, it was not quite that big a leap for her to join the inhabitants of Downton Abbey. She felt at home “very quickly, because I’m married to Jim,” she laughed. “I’ve been with it for as long as he has. So, I felt very comfortable, but still very special. Very relaxing. Everyone was very welcoming, as you’d expect them to be. It was easy.”
Tumblr media
Wow, married. How long have they been together?
“35 years,” Carter stated.
“And it took six years to get into this show,” Staunton said good-naturedly. “I had to work pretty hard on that.”
In fact, after I spoke with them, Staunton explained to the fans that they had made Downton Abbey a family tradition for years before she joined the cast for the movie.
“I didn’t have much choice, but yes,” she teased. “No. It was lovely. Sunday night, family entertainment. Our daughter was about 15. The three of us would sit down and watch it very happily. It’s a feel-good thing. Let’s face it, that’s what we all need, certainly now. This movie came around at absolutely the right time.”
Ironically, after waiting all these years to work together, Carter and Staunton didn’t really get to do any scenes together. It was a matter of classes. Their paths didn’t really cross. She was upstairs with the upper crust; he was downstairs with the servants.
“That’s how it is” Staunton teased.
“At home as well as at work,” Carter good-naturedly acknowledged.
“We wanted to travel to work together about three days and got quite over-excited about that,” Staunton explained. “Then, really, he’s at one end of the dining room and I’m at the other. I didn’t even get a glass of red wine out of him. He knows his place.”
Doyle certainly was happy to return to his role for the film as well. “It was a treat. It’s an absolute gift of a part.”
Tumblr media
So, when did Carter and Doyle realize that they were part of a complete pop-cultural phenomenon? Carter allows the ubiquity of Downton Abbey sort of snuck up on them. When it originally ran in England, it did well, but wasn’t a huge success. It wasn’t until the show crossed the pond to the United States that it “took off like a rocket.” He knew he was in uncharted territory when he came to the US for a press tour for the second season – and people at the hotel recognized him by his eyebrows.
Doyle realized he was in a stone-cold hit when he appeared at the Screen Actors Guild awards and lots of the big stars – people that he was in awe of as a fan – started asking him if they could get selfies with him.
“Suddenly I was confronted by a thousand fans staring at me while I was staring at them,” Doyle said.
When talking to the fans, Carter told a story about that first US press tour. “We went to a reception at the British ambassador’s residence in Washington,” he said. “The great and the good of Washington behaved disgracefully, as if we were a boy band… A very large boy band. A senior citizen band. Then at 10:00 at night, we were whisked in a fleet of black, shiny cars to a private tour of the White House presented by the Obamas.”
The crowd whooped.
“Yeah, I remember those days,” Carter smiled, and the crowd laughed. “I feel the same. It was Michelle Obama’s favorite program. We thought, this is something special now.”
Tumblr media
Of course, it was so special that it has attracted some of the great actors in Great Britain over the course of the series, and now of course for the movie. So, what is it like to work with some of the greatest thespians on the planet?
“Umm… intimidating,” Doyle told me, good-naturedly.
Intimidating, perhaps, but also very rewarding.
“I started as a theater director,” Engler said. “It was really very gratifying, because it was like my days in the theater, where they really want to work through scenes together. They like being challenged. They like being in a process where they’re experimenting and playing around with ideas.”
And Dame Maggie Smith, one of the greatest actresses in history? A woman who has had a celebrated acting career that has stretched over six decades. Someone whose career is so celebrated that the Queen gave her the female equivalent of a knighthood. Is it intimidating to work with her?
“Yes. Maggie can be intimidating,” Engler said. “But she’s also delightful and funny and smart. It’s only intimidating really because she is so good that you clearly want to do your best and come as prepared as you can be, not because she’s difficult.”
Tumblr media
“Oh, she’s a sweetheart,” Doyle concurred. “She’s a pussycat.”
By strange coincidence, while making a movie about the royal family visiting Downton Abbey, a member of the royal family visited the set.
“The Duchess of Cambridge, who is a big fan,” Doyle told the crowd.
“Kate Middleton…,” explained local Philadelphia anchorwoman Rosemary Connors, who was moderating the discussion.
“The Duchess of Cambridge,” Doyle corrected. “We don’t presume to use those names. She was a big fan of the show. She was eight-and-a-half months pregnant. She insisted on coming to see the sets. We guided her around. She meant to stay for about an hour. She ended up staying all through, to the trepidation of security.”
Tumblr media
So, what were the most memorable moments on set?
“Oh, now…,” Carter mused, excited.
“Your wife is next to you,” Staunton teased.
“Seeing my wife across the field with 100 horses was very memorable to me,” Carter acquiesced, then said seriously. “No, what I loved most, and it’s in the trailer so it’s not giving anything away, but I did have a walk up the gravel drive towards the castle. In my head, I’m Clint Eastwood walking up there. I mean, clearly, I’m a fat, old butler in a bowler hat, but in my head I’m Clint Eastwood. That was my moment.”
Staunton didn’t have to think a second for her favorite moment.
“Sitting on a stage working with Dame Penelope Wilton and Dame Maggie Smith,” Staunton said. “It doesn’t get better than that.”
Now that the Downton Abbey movie is on the books, there is just one more question. Will there be a sequel?
“When the series ended, everybody thought, ‘This is great, who knows, maybe there could be a film if it made sense,’” Engler said. “Then it started to seem like it was a steady groundswell. Everybody was willing to get together. This was a big, hard thing to pull off. Just to get everybody together after all this time in this same tight period of time. So, who knows? Never say never. There are no plans. It’s nice that people still love us so much that they want more.”

YouTube on Stage at VidCon 2019
You’d think the world’s largest video-sharing website would be all about video, but you’re wrong. The execs at YouTube also know how to put on a pretty incredible live show. Each year as the excitement from day one of VidCon in Anaheim, California winds down, YouTube on Stage turns the heat back up with 90 minutes of excitement and fun. It’s one of our favorite annual events at the convention. As thousands of thrilled fans poured into the Anaheim “YouTube” Arena, they were treated to appearances and performances by some of their favorite YouTubers, actors and performers.
Usually following the format of an old 60’s variety show, YouTube on Stage 2019 mixed it up a bit, making the show more of a mashup of a variety show, videos and a cool award show. Many fav artists hit the stage, including big names like Rhett & Link, who performed their hysterical parody about being irrelevant. On a more serious note, Kyle Hanagam spoke to the crowd about the most difficult time in his life before introducing a beautiful and moving dance performance he choreographed.
Tumblr media
R&B music group Next Town Down kept the crowd going with their performance that included a cover compilation of hit songs like “The Right Stuff” by NKOTB and “My Girl” by the Temptations and an original song. Another fun performance was Verbal ASE and KRNFX’s beatbox battle, which brought down the house.
For the second year in a row, one of the highlights of the night was eighteen-year-old America’s Got Talent alum Sofie Dossi and her mind-blowing acrobatic and aerobatic performance from high above the audience while hanging from hoop dangling from the rafters. Crazy cool!
Tumblr media
Some of the award winners from the night were:
Crazy Contraption – Mark Rober
Unconventional Covers – Big Marvel
Dessert Noms – The Icing Artist
As in years past, each attendee received a light-up bracelet as the entered the arena which transformed them into part of the show. Like seen in many big concert tours in the last years, the bracelets blinking to the music gave the impression of an interactive light show throughout the arena, which was a fun addition to the laser lights and pyrotechnics that lit up the night.
Tumblr media
As in past years, YouTube on Stage always finishes out the night with one of the hottest musical acts around. In 2018, the uber popular electronic DJ Marshmello headlined the evening and 2017 it was R&B superstar Jason DeRulo that left fans screaming. This year’s headliner was Grammy award winning singer/songwriter Meghan Trainor. She brought her high energy performance to the stage with her mega hits like “All About that Bass,” “Like I’m Gonna Love You” and “Me Too.” Keeping in step with her talented line of dancers, Trainor and YouTube on Stage was a perfect ending to our Thursday night at VidCon.
