Realism is Bad, Actually

* Description: * We say we love "realistic" fiction like Batman, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Horizon: Forbidden West. We say we love when our characters "act like real people" and "have realistic dialogue." But it's worth asking: Are these things ACTUALLY realistic? And if not, is realism even worth trying to capture?

Apparently, Vitruvius wasn't even a particularly renowned architect during his lifetime; he was just some guy who wrote an architecture textbook that was rediscovered in the west 1,500 years later after everyone had forgotten what he was talking about. It would be like if society collapsed and everyone somehow forgot about physics until one day they found a copy of Serway and Jewett's "Physics for Scientists and Engineers with Modern Physics (6th Ed.)" in an old library and it sparked a cultural and artistic movement.

Forgotten feminist authors of supernatural fiction:
A Jessica Amanda Salmonson appreciation post
While working on the ~spooky~ ghost story posts for Halloween, I noticed that quite a few works had the same editor: Jessica Amanda Salmonson. Salmonson, an author in her own right, edits anthologies of oft-forgotten women authors of supernatural fiction. Salmonson's introductions of these collections include detailed biographical information and in-depth literary analysis. She won a 1989 Lambda Literary Award for her anthology What Did Miss Darrington See? (which we don't have in the Cairns Collection, but UW does have downstairs in Memorial Library) The authors she profiled were late 19th/early 20th century feminists, most were New Englanders, and some were likely queer*.

*We don't know how she would have identified today, but Sarah Orne Jewett was in a long-term "Boston Marriage" with Annie Fields, and it is widely acknowledged that several of her stories include lesbian characters and/or subtext. While it's unclear if the feelings were requited, Harriet Prescott Spofford's friend Louise Chandler Moulton often referred to Harriet as "beloved" or "the woman I love." Finally, Salmonson argues that Olivia Howard Dunbar wrote her short story The Dream Baby in support of Harper's Bazaar editor Elizabeth Garver Jordan, who "with her lesbian lover adopted from France an infant to raise together!"

Wonder Wheel
(USA 2017)
For whatever difference it makes, I had no idea Woody Allen had a new movie coming out, like, now. Being a fan, I didn’t hesitate to sign onto a prerelease screening of his latest, Wonder Wheel. Having seen it, I must say that I’m not disappointed.
Set in 1950s Coney Island — in case the title didn’t cue you in — Wonder Wheelis a tawdry story of multifaceted infidelity told by…

Hey pagan fam! Make sure you pick up my Yule art for your altar or wall! This link takes you to the 5x7 size for $10 but I also sell it in 11x17 for $20. Grab it in time for Yule!
Here’s the bio on my Etsy profile:
Fine artist, Jessica Jewett, has one philosophy: "Live fabulously with a wheelchair and a paintbrush." She was born with a condition known as Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita. Due to the circumstances of her birth, she is a quadriplegic who has no meaningful use of her hands. She want ed to be an artist like her mother and grandmother but that wasn’t always considered possible. There was no one to teach Jessica, so she took matters into her own mouth before she could read or write. Learning to paint and draw was in her from such an early age that she taught herself to do both with the tools utilized in her mouth instead of hands. An art style developed as Jessica grew into adulthood focused on history. She is a devoted student of women’s history, the American Civil War, the French Revolution, and so forth. Those subjects heavily influence her art, making her style much more classical than modern. She is a portraitist and also makes an artistic record of endangered historical places. Besides being an artist, she is also an author. Her publications range from historical fiction to paranormal nonfiction and poetry. She is also a pagan – a Celtic polytheist – and intuitive reader with divination tools like tarot cards and scrying mirrors. Much of her artistic endeavors reflect her spirituality as well as her love of history, almost creating a Southern Gothic aesthetic. Whether charcoal pencil, colored pencil, watercolors, or oils, Jessica has a varied approach to art.
