YAYY A QUESTION
idk if this makes sense but yh
I briefly touched on this in my divine warriors explanation here.
Irene: Irene is worshipped all over the regions although most commonly in Ru'aun. Where the Church of Irene has the most control. Because of this and because Ru'aun's cultures are very closely aligned together there isn't much difference from village to village. Irene is associated with doves and lavender, around churches and royalty/nobles homes, you will see statues of doves and fields of lavender. It's very much like how people in the west worship gods. Very Catholicism coded if you will. They have cathedrals, stained glass depicting her and the other Divine (excluding Shad other than depictions of them "killing" him), and painted walls.
They make plays and either play in theaters or churches, depicting different parts of her life, they write about her (fanfics basically (Dante's inferno reference)), sculpt her, paint her, pray to her. Practious modesty, and whatever screwy things the church has painted her out to be.
older paintings depict her eating a heart so many priests eat hearts (Zane eats actual human hearts)
yeah so like Catholicism
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
yep
Shad: (I'll be using he/him for Shad as of right now) Very rarely worshipped as he's seen as the worst of the worst. So there isn't a select region that worships him. But those who do are either people who are edgy or those that want to go against the church. Any depictions of him that were prais have been burned and the only depictions of him are those of him being tortured or the great war between him and the Divine.
Any statues of him have crumbled to the ground and those who worship him are seen as less than. As well in every depiction of him, his gender is different. In one she is a woman, the next he is a man, and after then they'll be neither or both. This is depicted as such because of Shads fluidity in his gender. So he is commonly worshipped as many genders. (She's so cool)
Crows and Lily of the Valleys are associated with him as well. Back after the great war. The church used to take crows and burn them as offerings to Irene (ew) nowadays they are more or less treated like how cats were treated in the Dark ages and how crows normally are treated. Lily of the Valleys are often burned at funerals to "ward off Shad's spirit". (whatever tf that means) Lily is also a name rarely used and if you use it for your child you're either an Irene stan or a Shad stan.
Depending on which will grant you immunity to twitter discourse or you'll be doxxed. /j
Lucifer and how the church sees satanism core
(w/o the wings)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
doomed yuri go burrrrr
Esmund: Also Ru'aun core sadly. But the reason for this is because he is seen almost as Irene's right hand rather than an equal (by the church).
He is very rarely worshipped anywhere except Ru'aun but Gal'Ruk seems to like him (and shipping him with Enki, there are a lot of writings about them) (which is funny because Enki was in love with Esmund's brother).
He isn't worshipped like Irene, he's more personal if you will. Depends on the village but most worship him to a degree, there are like 2 villages that ONLY worship him.
Shields usually have his symbol embedded onto them and jewelry is a very common thing for those following his faith. (he is associated with both of these).
There is a common saying (used towards men/masc presenting ppl) "Beautiful like Esmunds jewels." (erm something like that), it's basically saying you are coming close to matching Esmunds beauty.
Catholicism but in a pretty greek gay way

bisexual ahhh
boom catholic bitches done, wait for me to come up w/ ideas for Menphia, Enki and Kul'Zak later

Make a jean-chain thing with all of the divine warrior symbols! Had trouble getting a decent picture of the chain as a whole but got alright ones of the individual symbols.
Thought you all would enjoy it, seeing as the pendants I've shown in previous posts did pretty well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Symbols are made after this image (not mine) which depicts the symbols.
Tumblr media
Edit: Since there was an ask about it, yes, I will be giving credit to whoever drew the symbols I referenced. Problem is, I don't have the info of the original artist so until I find it or someone is able to let me know who the artist is, I can't tag them or give other information. An edit will be made whenever I get that information.

Alright sooo, i did a little redesign work or did alittle touch ups on each symbols of each divine god for Misteria about a few weeks ago...
Tumblr media
i double checked at least a few times to be extra sure the symbols of each god at least looked like SOMETHING and so i came up with this!
kul'zak's is a tree (to represent him being the god of destruction and karma)
menphia's is a firey bolt (to represent her being the god of war and hope)
shad's looks like a torn apart heart (to represent him being the god of death and reanimation)
esmund's is a shield (to represent him being the god of protection and judgement)
enki's is shears (to represent him being the god of time and the space)
and
irenes is a sort of plant like it always has been, basically unchanged honestly (but its to represent her being the god of life)
also if you want to compare these with the og designs look no further! here they are for your eyes....

I have gotten inspired from my most recent ask, about my opinions on the DW. This time, I am going to talk about how I believe they are worshiped by the people, and how they affected the present world. Not going by village, just the general most common ways they are worshipped.
--
Irene: Much like how hospitals have the red cross symbolizing medicine and hospitals, Irene's symbol is that. Wherever a doctor and where a hospital is, is the Irene symbol. The matron symbolizes healing due to her many healing abilities, and so that translated over to hospitals and doctors when the idea of medicinal herbs and such were made popularized. Churches are typically where she is worshipped, sermons and days specified when they will join together and pray. The believers also believe that all plant life should be looked after and taken care of, destroyed only if necessary. Many of the bigger villages have green houses filled with medicinal herbs and native flowers that are religiously taken care of. However, there is a dark side. Bandits, kidnappers, just evil doers in general, use the promise of prosperity the name of Irene brings, to bring down and dangers unto others. There were even historically recorded times of people sacrificing others in the name of prosperity and good health.
Enki: Enki was the one who coined the idea of recording history and knowledge within books, less in murels. He was also someone that pushed education buildings and the idea that everyone should get the chance to learn, even if societies at the time did not want that to happen. He was also the cause of the publishing of the first maps to be made of the entire world and the nations. There is one major university using his symbol as the colleges symbol, even if that is not historically accurate. However, most books were destroyed in book burnings that he had created, ones not stored in a major library that is still hidden to this day. He is worshiped by scholars and sailors alike, though there is not one set place people worship him. Though the library could count.
Kul'Zak: Kul'Zaks symbol is used at camps and hotels people own in order to convey the idea that this is where wanderers and travellers can stay. He also had helped Enki publish the maps, though he was the one who had created them. He is not necessarily worshiped, but he has a small mantra that goes around camps that adventures learn, one that is said to bring safety and protection to those going between cities and nations.
Esmund: Esmund is the symbol of the guards order and is used at the guard training facilities around the different nations. He is the symbol of protection and people use his plus Irene's when them or a loved one is sick or injured. Irenes for health and healing, and Esmunds used for the protection of the person. It is also a symbol used alongside head guards, next to the cities symbol. It is only used by the head guards of said village, since they are the main protectors. It is rumored that one can learn the skin hardening ability he has, but it had only been done once, and it was an old man close to death.
Shad: Before he became the destroyer, he was the fighter. Unlike the idea of the protector, he was always on the front lines. He worked with blacksmiths to make different types of weapons that are used today, some were even the basis of better weapons made at later dates. He was worshiped among brash men who only want to become fighters within the wars, but he had the respect of weapon makers. When he became the destroyer, he was worshiped by small cult like villages, ones who praised him to the brashness he had faced as well. They do not believe in the other DWs, and they believe that Shad is the one and only being, the one true DW. Whenever someone was close to death, they were killed to be sacrificed to the Shadow Lord. When young promising fighters come along, they are sacrificed to Shad. Thus, the Shadow Knights began.
Menphia: She is actually the most less known DW, one who is not widely known. Only the oldest witches (and that's few) know of her and worship her. Other than that, there is folklore surrounding her. She would stay in the back lines and rain fire or ice balls from the sky to hit enemies in the lines. Though, that story became less of her and more of a ghost story that surrounds battle fields. That if the battle is gruesome enough, the sky would rain fireballs to torch those who dare make such a gruesome display on nature. Though that type of story is common within Irene believers. She was fine with being the most less known DW, as she did not want fame or worship.
YIPPEE!!!!!! I hope you like and pls expand on your own ideas as well :3

Another thing to help me characterize my Divine Warriors - Vices
Shad: Bloodshed - After becoming the Destroyer he was always hungry. He craved to consume and destroy everything in his path, whether it be people, animals, or towns.
Irene: Attention - While attention in itself isn't bad, too much of it can be bad. Irene was subscribed to "Any attention is good attention" and was how she became the most worshipped god. She encouraged it so more people would come to her for help. She was a fixer.
Enki: Power - The man was a hoarder of knowledge, and in this world, the quote "knowledge is power" is directly inspired by Enki. She was the Keeper, and they constantly wanted more.
Menphia: Booze - She was the fury, the one who constantly got into fights. The definition of a warrior, but as a warrior, she often killed people in her bouts of fury that she never meant to. This led to her taking moments to... calm her mind with a stiff drink.
Esmund: People - This man was a self-sacrificing maniac. He desperately wanted people to love him and, more specifically, Irene to love him. He wanted to wrap everyone in his big strong arms so no one would ever be unsafe again.
Kul'Zak: Smoking - After becoming immortal against his will, he took up the habit so he could at least feel like death. After all, a smoked fish is a dead fish.

Every divine fell in some way. It was bound to happen, no one figure could be holy and pure forever. Each shaped the soul of the divine in some twisted way, something that changed them completely.
Enki's ravenous thirst for knowledge, to become all knowing no matter the cost.
Irene's loss of all emotion and draining of compassion for those under her.
Drae'lic (Shad)'s loss of his own soul and spiral into beasthood.
Menphina's abandonment of those closest to her.
Esmund's thirst for power and control, his want to become stronger than even the other divine and gods that came before them.
Kul'Zak's sudden dissapearence after watching all his fellow divine rip each other to shreds.
The divine's flaws were covered up, twisted and changed to seem more holy. After all, no one wants to admit the god they devote their whole life to is nothing but a desprate, scared, bloodthirsty child.

@queeryutbrb you have opened a can of worms you're not ready for /j /j
This all, like all my needlessly extensive worldbuilding, is subject to change until I write it down in my lore notebook or it's written into the rewrite itself. So be warned I guess✨✨
@romeave-wives-club you probably wanna see this post too
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Starting off with the world map reveal to show (roughly) where Gul'rak is! Things keep shifting nonstop so, don't mind the other regions/continents quite yet.
So! The region of Gul'rak is technically split up in two, the Enki Warrior Island and Gul'rak proper. The reason it's this way is simply: The Demon Warlock, who like canon pulled his magic bs to seclude the island, letting in only who he wanted in and letting no one out.
The island is technically part of a series of islands, and on top of that it's- kinda small. Not tiny, per say, just small.
It's a mystery and an enigma to anyone living on the other islands or Gul'rak proper, people will swear there used to be another island, it had to be there right? But when they look for it, they can't see it. God forbid they try and sail, they'll either crash the shore or get turned around and lost.
It's something of an urban legend on Gul'rak, by the time we get there in the story.
The Enki Warriors, surprise surprise, primarily worship Enki. Which is funny because they refuse to believe Travis when he's trying to give them very valuable information but that's fine-
Anyways, Gul'rak proper primarily worships Esmund the Protector and Isana the Determined (have either me or @romeave-wives-club gone over our divine warriors fully?)
I could. Talk for hours. But that's the basics of Gul'rak! Once I get the entire region ironed out, there's gonna be a huge lore post probably, however until then if you want more info you can always send an ask! :>

i feel like The Divine concerts are always crazy as shit, theres always some drama or some stunt being pulled by the band or some crazy shit happens in the crowd due to lack of concert ettiquete
Irene has def played a surprise break up song which is her very clearly being petty about Shad. It comes out later that night that Shad and her got back together. She also seems like the type to give fans kisses, think Nana Osaki from the anime Nana type vibes. She’s also def done some VERY suggestive dances and acts while on stage and will continue to do them without shame. Shes probably also been on stage either drunk or high off som.
Kul’Zak decides to have a pre concert qna over on twitter or som which ends with him calling someone an idiotic bitch due to them running a fan account of him and treating him like hes an illiterate child instead of the full grown adult he is and getting cancelled (first time thats happened its ussally everyone else getting cancelled)
Enki posts a story of him in irenes dressing room with the caption “new things coming soon. . .” mid album tour before deleting it as it starts trending. Enki & Menphia got caught making out pre concert by a fan w a VIP w backstage access badge who took photos and posted them immediately after. Needless to say that person got kicked out pretty quickly.
if someone throws something on stage and menphia gets up and throws it back at them 10x harder because it almost hit someone on the head and shes getting real pissed of people throwing stuff on stage ( she also gets controversy over this because it did, indeed, hit the fan who threw it in the first place, not in the head but it still hit them )
i feel like this is probably someones (dont remember who) yung gravy garroth leaking into my view of esmund since garroth is esmunds descendant, but you cant tell me esmund hasent been handed and or thrown bras during concerts. he takes em and asks if their sure cuz he knows bras are expensive asf, but he takes em. ussally washes and donates them afterwards, but its always funny to hear him yell thank you over all the loud music, theres complilation videos of it happening
its happened once or twice that a fan manages to get on stage due to security lacking and nothing is more terrifying than watching a 6’9 Shad grab the person by the arm and DRAG them towards security if they manage to get too close to someone with a death stare. Shads a pretty big and strong guy and intimidating, and is absolutely TERRIFYING when he uses that to his advantage.

SOOOO UH HI
I redesigned the Divine Warriors sigils
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
People often shorten Irene and Shad’s to only the upper or lower half respectively, but the full symbol is mirrored from the top to bottom. somethingsomething balance somethingsomething reflection somethingsomething morality is in the eyes of the beholder while reality is merely a series of lines and shapes and it is up to the viewer to decide which of them may represent ‘good’ or ‘evil’ somethingsomething the truth behind a symbol is always so much more then those who blindly believe in it
Besides those, Esmound, Enki, Menphia, and Kulzak’s are each meant to vaguely resemble a shield, an infinity symbol, a burning star, and a compass.
As with the rest of my HCs, please ask if you’d like to use these designs for your own work and credit me if you do.

I have all the Divine Warriors deaths in mind. I'll eventually draw somethings about them but here you go.
Shad: Never truly died, as we know. Which is funny. God of death yet she continuously tries to live. He wears clothes not meant to be buried in a casket. But ones made to attend the funeral because they are alive. Even after becoming who he is today, her "armour", although reaks death. Shows how he will kill to live.
Irene: She never really died, just "disappeared." (or something I haven't thought that far). Much like Shad but different. God of life yet she tries every waking second to die. All those that she has loved, have been met with a tragic end. Her clothes resemble that of the body laying in the casket. Even in her new form she can't help but wonder when her death would come.
Menphia: She died while saving the one she loved. Enki. In the fierce fight with Shad she was the first to go. The one to make the sacrifice that saved centuries of people. Menphia wasn't one to make sacrifices, she was a selfish woman. Yet, Enki and Irene were important to her.
Enki: He set fire to himself inside his library. It was suicide. He took all the knowledge with him. No one knows why, as they never found his journal.
Kul'zak: He died doing what he loves best. Getting drunk and dancing on a ship. He death was peaceful, and calm. Mature if you will. Much like himself.
Esmund: He was mauled to death. Perhaps it was Xaiver, the boy he helped build into a man. Xaiver was the first Shadow Knight. But who knows. It was a gruesome sight. Despite Esmund's eagerness to protect those. He seemed to have failed at protecting himself.

Make a whole post about your favorite Divine Warrior ship
I was gonna make this post about Kul'zak and Enki cause they are my fave Divine ship, but then I realized I can make a comparison of Araphel and Esmund to Gilgamesh and Enkidu and that idea is eating me alive.
Gilgamesh the corrupt king, once loved before power pulled him into sin, desperately needing someone on his level to keep him in check. Enkidu who was created by the gods to be Gilgamesh's equal, rival, and friend.
Araphel who began to pull on the strings of a corrupt king and give into his vices due to power, desperately chasing the one person he's ever felt close to. Esmund who chose to acquire this power and uses it to protect his friends, even when they become enemies. He can never quite bring himself to kill his dear friend.
Gilgamesh and Enkidu who fought for seven days and gained respect for one another, enough respect and love that they would literally go to the ends of the earth for one another. Araphel and Esmund who once fought side by side and are now willing to throw one another to the end of the world if it means they never have to see the other again.
You can see the way they could have been. The lives they could have had. Where Irene is Inanna/Ishtar trying to seduce Gilgamesh away, but he stays head strong and only dedicates himself further to Enkidu. Where Araphel and Esmund could have had a truly beautiful relationship, one where they bettered one another both in combat and in spirit, supporting one another in a way only warriors can. Maybe they did have it at one time.
But even if that did happen, there's certainly no kept record of it. Even if Enki is a Keeper, even if Menphia wrote countless journals, there's no record of Esmund and Araphel's relationship before it turned sour. It's too painful of a memory when they see what it became. Enki who could have read these ancient texts and seen his friends in them, weeping over how much better things could be.
Kul'zak who's known Esmund longer than anyone else and knows what it's like when he's in love. He knows that even until the very last moment, Esmund still held love in his heart for the man he once knew. Faintly he still thought they could forgive and learn to love one another once more. It was only when things got so bad that Kul'zak went to the extreme of suggesting they seal him away that Esmund finally agreed to do something substantial.
Kul'zak wanted to do more than that. But he knew that most of the Divine would be against his initial idea of just straight up killing Araphel. Only Enki and Xavier would agree to that. Because he knows that Esmund still loves some past version of Araphel, that Menphia is still incredibly bitter about Irene and Araphel's relationship, that Enki lost someone he loved because Esmund decided to pursue Irene.
Esmund and Araphel love each other so much they'll literally tear the world apart just so they don't have to kill each other.

I am going to using tumblr as my notes app rn, feel free to interact.
For right now, I am going to label my Kul'Zak story "Dear Fellow Traveler" after the song by Sea Wolf because I find it fitting.
So, for Dear Fellow Traveler, I am going to have to have a major plot point being the fact that the Divine Warriors were divine warriors, not divinely kind. Like most gods, they thought that they wanted what was best and not what was actually good. In regard to how much humanity they had, this is my list from least to most.
Shad: After becoming the Destroyer, the be all end all, he quickly lost all ability to appreciate life. It got much worse after Irene's betrayal, where instead of finding life tolerable, he found it downright disgusting if it didn't fit in with his image. He was above life.
Irene: In this story, I am going to be making her unknowingly cruel. She, much like Aphmau, works in complete obliviousness and constantly believed that what she was doing was right. Irene could only view the future, never the true current. She was above humanity.
Enki: In my story it is not Travis's mom that is the descendant of Enki, but the Demon Warlock is Enki, or at least what's left of him. Enki was the keeper of knowledge and experimented with magicks to make himself live forever without any regards for the consequences. He is above death.
Menphia: She was a warrior through and through. She fought with little remorse and didn't stop until her opponent was destroyed. Her rage knew no limits but no body could do anything about it. She was above consequences.
Kul'Zak: He tried to be human, but as a being of the sea, he knew he would outlive many of them before he even got a gray hair. That was before he was cursed with immortality, but even then, he treated every moment like it was fleeting before the world came crashing down. He used to be above time.
Esmund: He was the only true human being, and he wore that on his sleeve. He protected humans from the other beings diligently, knowing that they were the weaker species when it came down to it. Though it later bred ignorance and hate, making him the most human of them all. He truly was human.

What are some of your rewrite ideas regarding religion in MCD regions, worship of Irene and her comrades, and of the relationship Irene herself has with others (the divine warriors, normal people, lords, etc).
Also just ideas of the Divine warriors in general? I find them very interesting
[picks up Kul'zak by the scruff of his neck and shakes him around like a chew toy]
I have a lot of reasons to throw hands with Jess on some very personal levels, but I want to throw hands with Jess on a creator v creator level over how bad the Divine Warriors are handled. We have exactly one picture of Kul'zak and one picture of Menphina. I started spelling her name with an extra n during my original rewrite and it's just a habit that I picked up because she matters so little that I didn't even notice. It's not like I was going to the wiki page to find information about her BECAUSE THERE'S NOTHING THERE!!
The fact that Shad and Irene have so much detail given to them, but the others get JACK SHIT will never not piss me off! Enki and Esmund get a little more, but it's still next to nothing!! These are key characters in her lore, and yet we know next to nothing about most of them.
So, I did some tweaks in my first rewrite that color how I view this world overall, so let's jump into it, starting with the most neglected of the bunch, Menphina and Kul'zak.
I believe Menphina was the Divine Warrior of Tu'la, and the first of the catfolk (oh yeah I call Meif'wa catfolk). The kingdom of Havas is the central kingdom and home to the primary church of The Furious, a warmongering kingdom that once controlled the main city and primary port, but over the years the King sought more and more power in the name of his divine. Menphina encouraged fighting for survival, not for conquest. Her Fury was not in the name of power, but in the name of fighting off those who backed her into the corner.
Much of Menphina's history has become lost on her people. They remember her as a fierce warrior, not the scared and cornered animal she once was. They remember her as a romance-less woman who only reproduced to continue her bloodline, the royal family. They've forgotten that she expressed love for Irene and Shad. They've neglected the pain that would have caused as Irene erased Shad from the story.
Her best friend was Kul'zak. They were akin to siblings, spending hours with one another around a lake in the Tu'la country side. A willow tree with rose vines climbs around it, and after the defeat of Shad, she turned it into a subdimension of Irene's (like the sacred tree Aph and Garroth met under). Her people know she was friends with Kul'zak, but few know the nuances of said friendship. They don't know how much these two would do for one another.
Kul'zak never had a kingdom, never had a church, the closest he gets is a following. Many wanderers and traders consider him a high inspiration, especially ones from The Gal'ruk Islands. Ru'aun has forgotten that he was a wanderer, not a keeper. He kept quite a bit over his travels, but lots of the treasures he gathered were meant for Enki. His closeness to Enki was well documented, if you could read their encoded messages to one another.
Historians call them best friends. If they remember Kul'zak. He doesn't lose sleep over whether or not the rest of the world remembers him, just that those who matter do. His friends, his fellow warriors, and his fellow wanderers. Those are who matter.
Kul'zak was at least a little in love with all the warriors (except Menphina, they're childhood friends and frequently call one another siblings). This isn't well documented or well remembered due to his... Odd expressions of love. The Divine understood it and no one else could.
Also here's a Picrew I did using Brights Picrew Hell of Kul'zak because he's my fave Divine Warrior (I held back talking about him so I can talk about the others)
Tumblr media
Kul'zak lost his eye in the fight against Shad, and Menphina was also badly wounded, though details of her exact injury are unknown. She fled to Tu'la before any of her friends could see the real damage.
I think Enki used to be a man full of life and love, happily helping the islands he called his home. He's greatly remembered and highly revered by these people, though the details of his personal life aren't as well known. It's known that he settled down with a woman, and spent the rest of his days fighting the Demon Warlock.
As time wore on he became weary of his position and held resentment for all the knowledge he feels is now a burden. His extensive library started to feel like a prison. The only solace he got was whenever Kul'zak would visit. One day Kul'zak came and he just knew. He could tell by looking at both of them that this was the last time they would see each other. It was the happiest Enki had been in his entire life.
Esmund was also born in Ru'aun, but Ru'aun is only known as the birthplace of Irene. And as a protector, he doesn't mind at all. Some theorize that Esmund could have resented Irene for living in her shadow, but that's exactly what he wants. He wants to use his power to protect and uplift those he holds dearest.
There's no dedicated following to Esmund, but he and Irene ensured that the guard system was a success, and he lives on in the heart of every foolish guard willing to throw their life away for a lord.
Random headcanon that I treat as canon because there's literally nothing to contradict me: It was Kul'zak who suggested that they send Shad to the Nether. He first thought of it after seeing how sad Menphina got every time Irene and Shad fought. He wanted to see her smile. So he went to Enki and the two developed their method with the help of Esmund and the wyverns to seal Shad away.
After sending Shad to the Nether, Irene tried to erase him from the story. Obviously she wasn't able to erase him completely, people still knew who he was, but she spun a narrative that he became power hungry and betrayed them. She made sure there was no record of Kul'zak coming up with the plan, and solely took any blame for it. Afterwards Irene became far more reclusive, and far less kind.
Not that she was hostile, but she responded to the plight of mortals with a general "Learn to take care of yourself" statement. She would only step in if absolutely necessary. This caused many to become disillusioned with her over time, often moving to other regions out of resentment. They expected her to bring their fallen relatives and friends back to life. She never did that after Shad left, not even to her own loved ones. Death seemed like a luxury to them.
And Shad. Man, I FUCKIN HATE THAT NAME. Listen we love renaming shit in this fandom for very understandable reasons, and I think we need to rename Shad more. Like, I don't object to the cast of MCD calling the Shadow King "Shad" as a way to shorten his name in conversation, I think that's fine! I really wish it was that! But noooo, Jess had to be clever and make that the name of the Divine Warrior even though it's a really dumb fucking name. It's not sinister, it's not intimidating, it's not even a good name. It's just Shad. It's a sad Chad.
I'm personally a big fan of calling him Araphel (so much so that I forgot his name was Shad when I first got back into MCD), and that's what his name is always going to be in my brain and my rewrites. Now that I've gotten that out of the way--
I think Araphel is a truly sad, pathetic, broken man. One who once had it all, but it wasn't enough. He needed more, he needed to have something else, he felt he was owed the romance he desired with Irene. And while she reciprocated, it felt inauthentic. As if he loved her more than she could ever love him. Araphel was doomed not by a desire for power, but a lust for someone he could never fully have. Lust turned into desperation, desperation turned into anger, anger to rage, and rage to resentment.
During his rageful state was when he was sealed away. It was during this rage to resentment that he created the Shadow Knights. He knew exactly what Irene and Esmund wanted, guards who would lay down their lives for lords, and lords who would lay down their lives for their people. That's why regardless of your previous attachment, if you're a guard assigned to a lord, your calling latches onto your lord. No exceptions. No excuses.
The thing Kul'zak, Esmund, Enki and Menphina were fighting for was to stop Irene and Araphel from fighting. In the end, they failed. Araphel made his Shadow Knights, and Irene had her lords. And one day, a reincarnation of both were born and sent on a collision course towards one another without any hope of stopping it. In the end, they could never stop finding, falling, and fighting.
