Struck by lightning, sounds pretty frightening But you know the chances are so small Hit by the A-Train, crashed in an airplane Better chance you're gonna buy it at the mall But it's a twenty-three-or-four-to-one That you can fall in love by the end of this song So get up, get up No I'm never gonna let up so you might as well sing along The odds are that we will probably be alright Odds are we gonna be alright, odds are we gonna be alright tonight The odds are that we will probably be alright Odds are we gonna be alright, odds are we gonna be alright tonight The odds are that we will probably be alright Odds are we gonna be alright, odds are we gonna be alright tonight The odds are that we will probably be alright Odds are we gonna be alright, odds are we gonna be alright for another night
I always love singing along to Barenaked Ladies, and thus did so when Odds Are came up on the radio when we were in the car earlier! I love this song; it always cheers me up and I find it comforting!

Being Neut: Don't Pick Favorites!
"I accidentally cheered for the maple leafs when matthews scored a hat-trick today. And which cold-blooded Torontonian wouldn't? A neut, that's who.
Every time I pick favorites, I'm carefully reminded not to. In this particular instance, my opposition theory kicked in. It went a little something like this:
<mathhews for the leafs scores>
"YES! GO LEAFS!" -me (oops. careful, you should be neut, neutralg. therefore, here comes the calculation): "Montreal is opposed." -the voices. "oh please. GO leafs!" -me
Sometimes you just gotta pick favorites, and screw being neut. Go leafs. What y'all think? Should I remain neutral, and impartial to world events, as a spectator and telepathic emulator? Probably. I just hope bad things don't happen when I pick favorites. We remain unscathed today: Montreal lost regardless. GO LEAFS!
gg. ee too ("Evil Empire").
I think my guild is evil in my head, and i'm a neut.
shit. Took me 23 years to realize that the voices were evil, and I was a neut.
"Whatever it is, so may it be!" -NeutralG ("And therefore, it is so!")-the voices."
--- Stephen M. Miniotis "NeutralG" or "Neut" is a part-time undergrad studying English literature at the prestigious University Of Toronto. Mister Renoviction
Tumblr media
Mister Renoviction,
You’re disfiguring my city. Your backbone is made of almighty dollars; you’re making a mockery of what a city should be. Nowadays, I can’t even count the multitude of cranes and high-rises protruding on my skyline. Developers of cold and icy shorelines, dealers of kitsch à la carte, you set up giant cubic figures all over the city. These huge rectangular boxes belong to the rich and famous on Lakeshore Boulevard, Spadina Avenue, Bloor Street, College Street, Dundas Street West, and the list goes on. Mister Dishonest, there is no more Honest Ed and its myriad of lights in my city. I remember when they sparkled day and night on the Toronto pavements and into the soul of Torontonians.
Your appetite has no limit. You go East, West, North and South like a rampant gangrene. A virus that has no boundaries, symptomatic of a disease called savage capitalism or putrid neoliberalism. Mister Renoviction, you are addicted to money. Look at the monkey on your shoulder! You have no compassion to spare. The city can fine you 135 000 dollars for dishonest renovations, but you don’t bat an eye. It’s pocket change for a filthy rich man. Filth is your middle name. You open your wallet, on the verge of boredom, and pay, knowing very well that you’ve just evicted hard-working families and created more homelessness.
Mister Renoviction needs more profit. Next, you increase the rent or turn your apartments into condominiums and let the rich fight for their panoramic view of the CN Tower or the Skydome. Then, you listen to the offers, sweet music to your ear. You enjoy the bickering of clients, their competition to get the closest spot to the sky. You feel like a Roman emperor enjoying the gladiators’ morbid circus.
The politicians, with whom you play golf, every Sunday, won’t complain. You’ve paid the fine for renoviction, a slap on the wrist, and you’re in the clear. Now, your name’s on their financial contributors list for the next election. So, who’s complaining? Let sleeping dogs lie. Unhappy people are simply jealous of your good fortune. You’re a self-made man remember? Your detractors must be frustrated socialists. They forget, we’re in Canada after all, in Toronto, the land of the free. Free to kick parents and kids onto the street under the pretext of renovating, free to impose hideous buildings anywhere and destroy the sense of urban communities.
Rent control? What’s that? A prehistoric vision of fairness with no teeth. Landlords and property owners can hike rents for new tenants with no real repercussions. Mister Renoviction, you can have your cake and eat it too. Meanwhile, skyrocketing rents are driving out longtime Torontonians, people who care for the city. Wealthy people looking for a place away from their mansion are coming, in an unstoppable tide, to replace the irreplaceable. There’s no substitute for the love of a city. You can only find it in genuine people who are enjoying their neighborhood, the public parks and the ride on their favorite streetcar.
Torontonians aren’t here only for Caribana or the Toronto Film Festival. They also march, and demonstrate for more affordable housing, good healthcare, and lower daycare fees. Appalled by gun violence, police brutality and homelessness, they stand united. They don’t zoom in and out in their Mercedes Benz to see the new musical in town or the latest NBA star. They stay and experience the city, the good and the bad.
Mister Renoviction, you do not love the city. You do not love at all. Your heart is a dollar sign. I can hear it beating to the rhythm of the Toronto Stock Exchange clock.
Didier Leclair, writer, author of the novel Toronto, I love you, Mawenzi House.

I need to tell you a story.
Two weeks ago, November 6Canada had one of those huge countrywide moments that had 1/3 of Canadians turned to the CBC, our national broadcaster, at the same time. We weren't watching the summer Olympics; in fact, the CBC pre-empted the Olympics for this event. The CBC was airing a three-hour, commercial-free, blissfully uninterrupted concert by The Tragically Hip.
Those of us who love this band love this band. We have memories about how a Hip song has woven its way into our own history. Or many Hip songs. Their discography is, thankfully, extensive.
Anyway. Here's why we were all watching: The Hip's lead singer, Gord Downie, has incurable brain cancer, and this was his last show ever. Unlike what happened earlier this year when we unexpectedly lost the beloved triumvirate of David Bowie, Alan Rickman and Prince, we got to say goodbye to Gord. And so those of us who love The Hip cleared our Saturday night and found the biggest damn tv we could, and gathered our friends to watch.
I sat, as Torontonians do, on a patio (this one equipped with multiple huge screens and fabulous speakers), with a pint in one hand and a tissue in the other. The concert began, and everyone clapped after each song. We cheered often.
At one moment (and here's where the knitting comes in), my friend Brenna said, "he's wearing a scarf made out of socks!" Indeed he was. (see below) At the next song break, he held up the unbuttoned creation and said, "I've learned I need to keep my instrument warm." He wrapped it around his neck, buttoned the toes together and launched into the next number.
Knitty's own Kate Atherley is a Hip fan, too, and she was watching and weeping just a little further west. I texted her, asking if she'd seen the scarf and if, as she's an expert sock designer, she thought we could do a tribute to it in our upcoming issue. Which was going live in two weeks. With some yarn from Kim McBrien of Indigodragonfly – also a Hip fan – Kate made it happen. (Kim's favorite Hip song is Ahead by a Century.)
This scarf, then, is two fraternal socks in colors reminiscent of the metallic leather suits Gord wore on the tour -- in magenta and turquoise. The first suit of the night was made

San Francisco; or, How to Destroy a City | Public Books
San Francisco will always be my favorite City.
“We were a sanctuary for the queer, the eccentric, the creative, the radical, the political and economic refugees, and so they came and reinforced the city’s difference. she bore witness to the Gold rush, the Transcontinental Railroad, Japanese internment, the Beat poets, the free speech movement, the AIDS crisis and modern LGBTQ politics, and the birth of the semiconductor and motherboard.” This mix of factors—along with the region’s clustering of complementary industries (“agglomeration economies”), its “liberation from rigid corporate culture,” and its mix of cyberculture and counterculture, military contracts and university research, progressivism and libertarianism—made the Bay Area a fertile ground for the growth of Silicon Valley.

Also rereading CoT, and what is the deal with Uriel? As a non-Torontonian, I'm obliged to be offended that she is from there, but the fact that you decided the scrubby, hard-drinking little punk angel who is overly affectionate was the Canadian delights me.
The deal with Uriel is this: from the second she stepped into my headspace in 2004, Uriel didn’t sound American like Raphael did.  I thought about the speech cadence and inflection that I had, for some reason, automatically assigned her, and I realized, oh, wait.  That’s how a few of my Canadian friends sound.  Having Raphael stationed in San Francisco seemed to demand that the other Archangel he was stationed with, i.e. Uriel, should be farther north in North America.  Toronto seemed like a fitting place; I did very much want her to be a die-hard hockey fan, too.  The deal with all four of my OC versions of the Archangels in CoT (and in my other GO stories where they appear, too; they even turn up in my collaborations with @procrastinatingbookworm) has always been about balance: two of them are on Earth (Raphael and Uriel); two are in Heaven (Gabriel and Michael).
Archangels have different functions from Principalities (Aziraphale’s title, as per novel canon), although they’re almost as lax about their jobs as Aziraphale is about his.  Tossing a sarcastic, camp American and rowdy, earnest Canadian into the immortal social milieu of my GO stories made for some thrilling plot developments.  They’re my first original characters in a fandom context to ever become noteworthy/popular for their own sakes, and I’m beyond grateful!  Uriel in particular seems to be a consistent reader favorite.

Cheap flights to Toronto
Toronto is a very cool, in fact, it's quickly become one of my favorite cities. Toronto is a BIG city with a population over 2.5 million. It's also a very international city. In fact, just over 50 per cent of Toronto's residents weren't even born in Canada! In a city with so many foreigners, it shouldn't be surprising that Torontonians speak all together over 140 different languages. In a city as international as Toronto (rated one of the most multicultural in the world), it's no surprise that there are plenty of hipsters and hipstery things to do.
