Narkopop (2017) Rausch (2018), Gas
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Narkopop was another very elegant, very atmospheric Gas album dominated by swells of natural movement and cinematic drama. An accomplishment of a different kind to its predecessors: it was not the work of a plucky interpreter of orchestral minimalism but of Voigt as an accomplished artist reviving his most celebrated style.
The professional naturality of Narkopop is thoroughly impressive and perhaps its most notable feature. So far as modern ambient records go, it is professional and competent, if not as stunning as its predecessors. It is eventually in comparison, however, rather than content, that one finds Narkopop faltering. It is simply not a record of the stature of any of the Zauberberg, Konigsforst and Pop trilogy. Maybe it’s the lack of techno, the larger sound or the polished production but it’s less rough, less eerie, less textured. Unlike those records, it is more soundtrack-esque, feeling like it should accompany a visual element - though that isn’t inherently bad, its three predecessors never felt like they required any extra stimulus other than the pieces themselves.
Rausch, Narkopop’s sister record, succeeds more satisfyingly on its own terms. More active and slightly more dramatic but still of the same polished production, I find myself drawn more to Rausch, as an angrier, more enveloping and beat-driven work. It towers over its listener, not in the manner of the undulating textures of Gas’ earlier trilogy but as rather vast and cavernous – and entertaining all the same.
In summation, Narkopop is an impressive and skilful work from an icon but is far from as significant or groundbreaking as his previous, most renowned pieces. Rausch, while also not as compelling as those canonised works, is more interesting, a spectacle in a different manner.
Pick: ‘Narkopop 5’

GAS - ‘Narkopop’
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even though there was not a single GAS project release for about 17 years, it is hard to say the German producer behind it Wolfgang Voigt was ever inactive. Since ‘Pop’, the last GAS album released in 2000, the Cologne-born musician has released albums, EPs and singles under various aliases, as well as releasing compilations including all his work. However, last year the GAS moniker saw a brief comeback, remixing a Robyn track for her RMX/RBN project, and it was a perfect example of his excellent, heavily textured ambient-techno.
This year he came back with the release of his first album in a while. ‘Narkopop’ is released under his own label, Kompakt, and for those who know Voigt’s music, we know what to expect - tracks that lack a proper title (they usually have the album title + a number), minimal beats that sound very distant yet blend perfectly with the organic, lush atmosphere and very abstract melodies (if there are any at all) popping on occassion. But just because it is slightly predictable it does not make any less appealing.

In fact, that is quite the opposite, there is a lot to be interested on when he takes the usual “formula” of his typical release, and does something new with it. The second and tenth (and final) tracks on the album take on the sound of an album like ‘Zauberberg’ and make it sound expansive, reaching over ten minutes (and in the case of the latter, sixteen) in a completely justified way. Also, “Narkopop 5″ includes some vague industrial elements, which make his tracks sound a little more ominous than usual.
And even though quite a few tracks are fairly usual “ambient”, like on track one, three and four, they still sound good enough that one can realise why Voigt is considered to be one of the most influential figures of the genre. I have seen someone say that ‘Narkopop’ was the night to ‘Pop’’s day. And I can see it as the more ethereal, field recordings-based elements on that album are less dense than those in the new one. But even without considering that, ‘Narkopop’ remains as another strong release in GAS’ catalog, now let’s hope the next one does not take 17 years!
Highlights: “Narkopop 1″, “Narkopop 2″, “Narkopop 5″, “Narkopop 10″

Can you rec some modern composer besides Basinski or Glass, please
Yeah absolutely
Going off the two examples you listed I think you’d really like Wolfgang Voight. He released Pop under the alias Gas but it’s a beautiful ambient project with warm synths and Narkopop is another beautiful album but with more classical/symphonic touches.
Ravedeath by Tim Hecker is worth checking out as well if you haven’t already, lots of church sounds mingling with older synths.

17 years on from his previous ambient masterpieces, including Pop and Königsforst, Wolfgang Voigt enters the world of Gas once again with a new album, Narkopop.
Reiterating his utilitarian style, this electronic music auteur offers up 10 new tracks of distant and impossible dense soundscapes. Gas has always been a curious character in my musical peripherals. Quiet, reserved and at a first glance, and to the untrained ear, possibly even boring and repetitive. His music and legacy is as deep as you are willing to throw yourself into, It can be hard to take his music at face value.
Being tipped off to Gas through the internet some years ago, I felt, was akin to being dropped arbitrarily in the middle of an endlessly dense forest. With the logistics of individual tracks being blurred around the edges, and no defined starting and ending point, it never felt so much as pressing play as it did diving deep into separate worlds designed with care and nuance. Like a hike for the mind, I used the word utilitarian earlier, the music of Gas is great for meditating, sleeping, walking, exploring inwardly, diving deep and seeing what comes up.
Narkopop is more dense and darker than Pop, running a parallel theme of forestry and sleeping, maybe Narkopop is deeper into the forest of sleep than its predecessor.
The idea that a sleeping landscape, in this case, a deep forest constructed by ambient musical texture, can be coloured or influenced by the artist’s waking life is an interesting idea. With this idea we can speculate if this album and the work of Gas in general can be used as a sort of abstract social commentary. In the case of Narkopop, this may be quite critical, maybe if the world was a more forgiving place, with less daily atrocities, the forest would be less dense and twisting, maybe Voigt would sleep more easily at night.
The fleeting nature and minimalist style of Gas, means there is often not so much tune to hum or to sing along, and maybe that’s what keeps it so fresh.  As you would revisiting a park or forest, special places that would be impossible to retain the detail inside your head, its almost an obligation to come back and engage with the environment, nourishing for your mind and body.
From listening to Pop, I feel happily vexed, stuck somewhere between sleep and waking, the lines are blurred, it’s hard to tell. It’s not always pleasant, but I feel the music is honest. Here we see Gas going deeper into the void with Narkopop, it feels this shade is being explored deeper and darker, just as the forest runs deeper and more elusive. More and more trees engulf and inhibit the light. When it does break through, by contrast it shines bright and of course, signature to Wolfgang Voigt fleeting and delicate.
