Feeling pretty smug about this Grand Cru burgundy I have on paw. Riper fruit on the nose with juicy raspberries, cherries, wild blackberries, and stemmy notes. Pretty juicy on the palate with notes of fruit-flavored black tea. Sturdy tannins on this guy.

Whisk an egg yolk, sugar and vanilla in a bowl, then fold in mascarpone. Next, combine coffee, sugar and Kahlua. Dip savoiardi biscuits in the coffee mixture and arrange them in a martini glass. Cover with the mascarpone, dust with cocoa and chill. Then watch the delight in your guest’s eyes when you serve them tiramisu in a martini glass.

The recipe serves four, but on this occasion, I serve three (one for each couple) and leave one remaining in the fridge to enjoy with tomorrow’s coffee.

After dessert Flood opens another bottle of Grand Cru Bourgogne and the couples cozy up on the couches surrounding the fire pit. I sit down next to Cheyenne “at a respectful distance.” I’m trying not to be a personal space invader, and I don’t want to assume she’s interested in snuggling with me, so I leave a few inches between us. Autumn is rummaging through a wicker basket near the backdoor, finds a blanket and tosses it on top of us.

Cheyenne takes the bait. She stands up, wafts the blanket, plops down right beside me and covers us both. Under the blanket she takes my hand in hers and snuggles her body closely against mine with her nose up against my neck.

We are officially snuggling under a blanket.

We both kick off our shoes and warm our feet by the fire. The stars are out, the air is cool, and much great conversation has been made this evening. Now, everyone is content with being quiet and being held. The yellow and blue flames are flickering and dancing in our eyes as we quietly pass the time and sip down the last of our Grand Cru.

It would be very very easy to fall asleep next to the fire tonight and Henrik and Beri look like they might be the first victims as the sandman comes. When Beri starts nodding off, Henrik jostles her back to life and proposes their departure.

Henrik: We’re going to take off man. Thanks for a great evening.

Me: You’re welcome to stay in the guest room.

Henrik: We’re getting up early tomorrow to drive down to Santa Cruz for the day and we don’t want to wake everyone up. So we’ll stay at Beri’s place tonight.

The three couples get up and quickly tidy up the wine glasses and turn off the fire pit. We wander through the living room to the front door. Flood and Autumn give a round of hugs then saunter somewhat drunkishly down the hall toward the guest bedroom. Cheyenne watches as I give hugs to Henrik and Beri, and offer them the guest room once more out of courtesy even though I know they’re dead set on leaving.

Beri is unsure if Cheyenne is spending the night and offers to give her a ride home. 

Beri: Cheyenne, do you need a ride home? We’re heading that direction. It’s not a bother.

My heart flutters with anxiety.

Swords have been drawn from their scabbards and there’s a medieval war raging between my inner monologues. Side one is pleading at the top of his lungs for her to “please please please stay!” whilst side two is gently trying to persuade side one that spending the night together on the first date is moving too quickly.

I’m trying to play it cool and not act like I’m desperate for her to stay. Cheyenne on the other hand is having none such difficulty. I can see clearly that she’s made up her mind about spending the night. She’s got a coy smile on her face, but I honestly can’t tell if she’s staying or leaving.

She clutches her purse as if she’s thinking about leaving, then takes a long steadied look at me and a long look at Beri before delivering the verdict.
