Hi. Hello.
If you've found this blog it's probably because we either RP together or you just randomly found it. Whether you're here because we write together or you're here for fandom or x-reason, welcome to my little mess of the intertubes. I collect various resources, references, and basically end up dumping all my fandom stuff here now because I'm too lazy to log into my actual personal blog. You'll find quite an eclectic collection here that you can navigate by using the links below.
Comments or questions? Feel free to ask anytime. An earlier version of this blog can be found at aerynnn-archived.

Fandoms (and Characters Within Them) I Enjoy Writing For
I’m only listing the fandoms/characters I enjoy writing for, and then my all time favourite characters to write for will be indicated as shown below. If you request a headcanon for a fandom, without one specific character/a few select characters, I will write for most of the characters on the list below said fandom, provided the list isn’t too long.
Feel free to ask if I’ve watched a show/movie and/or if I’d be willing to write for a certain character. I might have left it off the list, or might be interested in getting into it.
Also, I’d like to preface this list by saying that me writing romantically for kid characters doesn’t mean I’m romantically attracted to them. Funnily enough, I (born in 2005) have no romantic interest in a 12-year-old character. To me, it’s no different than an author romantically pairing up two of their same-age child characters. That being said, I have indicated under certain fandoms that I’d prefer writing for characters as being aged up at least a couple of years if the request is romantic.
If you have any requests or questions, leave them in my ask box!
*___* = one of my favourites to write for (though not always a reflection of my opinion of the character/show; I love a lot of characters/shows that aren’t listed with *_*, but I’ll just find them a bit tricky to write for)
-___- = I’ll write for them, but only platonically/not romantically
---------
Here’s a quick reminder to please please please read through the post regarding requesting rules, things I will/won’t write and just general information you should know before sending in a request. It’s linked HERE.

Written in 2019***
Every summer me and my brother go somewhere new. This summer we're going to Seoul South Korea. He's in love with kpop or better say, BTS, and few other groups so he is dragging me along to Seoul with him.
"You know they're on tour you won't see them here." I tell my brother.
"I know! But still it's fun to be here. And I'm not just here to go celebrity hunting. I'm here to film the music video to my new song." He says.
"Mira Yoandri, I love you but we both know you picked Seoul because you wanted to go celebrity hunting. And besides why didn't you bring Ivan, I haven't seen him in while. And he actually speaks Korean." I say looking out the window of our hotel room.
"I didn't bring him because his busy and besides you speak Korean. now come one let's go site seeing before it gets too dark. And then we can go have dinner to this place Ivan told me about."
We take our bags and walk out the room. My bad have my portable charger, my cameras, Polaroid and digital, my wallet, and my headphones.
We take a cab to a shopping center and walk around for a bit. We hear screaming coming from outside the store we are in and soon the doors a closed.
"What happened?" I asked Yoandri
"I don't know, but we should look around and see. I don't want us to die." He says. I roll my eyes at him and walk around the shop. We see a few people and by a few I mean like 12 people.
"I think there was two people looking around when you guys came in. Would you like for us to look for them we could take them out?" The lady at the counter said
"No, if they're shopping let them. We're doing the same." One of them says.
Me and Yoandri pick out the shoes and sweaters we wanted and go to check out.
"It's NCT. The people that are in the store are NCT127." Yoandri whispers in my ear.
"NC-who?" I say looking at him.
"You really don't know anything do you?"
"No, you're the one thats friends with Ivan. You guys are the ones that know kpop."
"Yet tu hablas coreano."? We start talking in Spanish and i look around with him.
"Okay. I just realize, our Spanish is soo bad." Yoyo says. I let a small laugh out and say "yeah, I don't think I've ever been this bad at being Latina. I can't even speak Spanish properly. What use is speaking four languages if I'm losing the most important one. I'm so ashamed I don't think I should be considered Cuban." I say in a disappointing tone.
"Don't be. It sucks when you start to forget words in your first language but if you know more than one then you should be proud it not ashamed for forgetting a few words." A voice says from next to me. "I'm Mark Lee"
"I'm Y/n Cabrera, and thank you. It means a lot to hear words like that." I say back. He smiles at me and takes a second before asking "So what are you doing in Seoul? I mean I heard your from Cuba but just curious."
"Well I'm from Miami, my parents are from Cuba. And me and my brother visit a different country every summer, it's kinda our tradition. This summer he picked Korea and just as a plus I'm helping him film his new music video." I say. He looks at me and smiles.
"Sounds fun, wait music video?"
"Yeah, He was in the tv show, well I guess it would be a survival show for you guys, where a band of 5 was made and he came in 6th place. He didn't make the band but got quite a big following from it. He does his own work and stuff. We're supposed to film by the river tomorrow." I say
"Really? Which bridge?" He asked
"Um Yeongdongdaegyo. A friend of mine said it was nice." I say.
"Which Friend? Sorry I'm being nosy." He says
"It's okay I enjoy the conversation anytime  to not talk to my brother about KPOP really."
"You don't like kpop?" He asked. I could hear the worry in his voice given he is a kpop idol and here I am doing anything to not talk about kpop.
"It's not that I don't like it. I just like listening to it on my own accord. My brother and his friend Ivan listen to it a lot and the few groups I liked they killed by over playing. Don't worry Mark Lee I'm not an anti, my favorite llama plays SM artists music once in a while." I say
"Favorite Llama? You know Amber?" He asked as we keep walking around the store.
"Yeah, Ivan met her through her sister then me and Yoandri met her at a party Jackie had. She saw I felt out of it so she talked to me and we ended up becoming friends. There might be a lot of people in the world but it's a small world Mark." I say. Me and Mark hear our names being called I turn to might right and he turns to his left. Our faces were inches apart. I back away blushing and walk over to Yoandri.
"It was nice meeting you Mark Lee" I say walking backwards so I'm still facing him.
"You too Y/N Cabrera." He says as one of his members comes up from behind him.
I turn around and walk out of the shop with Yoandri and go get ice cream.
"What happened back there?" He asked as we wait for our taxi to go back to our hotel.
"Nothing, I was just talking to him." I say.
"Okay" He says. We get back to the hotel and up to our room. Yoyo gets out his laptop and FaceTimes Ivan. I swear their friendship is something to envy.
I lay in bed and go on YouTube. I look up NCT and start watching some videos. To my surprise Mark is in almost every video.
Yoandri lays next to me and sees my phone.
"Mark Lee, Pro at debut. He is in half of the NCT units now. He was in all of them but Way V debut and he graduated from Dream last New Years. Nct the group with unlimited members." He says. I lock my phone and look at him.
"I thought you only knew BTS stuff." I say raising an eyebrow.
"I know more than just BTS. Okay okay let's stop talking about nct and watch a movie." He says. He puts his laptop on his lap and I cuddle into him. Half way into cars I fall sleep on his chest.

Review: Knives Out (Johnson, 2019)
“Look around. The guy basically lives in a Clue board.”
(major spoilers below)
Rian Johnson, you dog!
Knives Out is lightning in a bottle. All at once a tightly wound thriller, a hilarious comedy, a dysfunctional family drama, an old-fashioned murder mystery, and a new-fashioned commentary on modern politics, Johnson as writer and director not only has his cake, but eats it many times over. He's assembled a pitch perfect cast, with virtually every actor getting a moment to shine: Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc (omfg that name) is beautifully droll in the most ridiculous southern accent imaginable; Chris Evans masterfully subverts his Captain America persona and reaches back to Scott Pilgrim territory as one of this year's most engaging assholes; Jamie Lee Curtis is an exquisite ice queen in a hot pink pantsuit; Michael Shannon is warm and frightening and hilarious all at once; Toni Collette makes an absolute meal out of every single line she has; Christopher Plummer (hot take alert!) continues to be maybe the most impressive and consistent actor of the last fifty years. Even folks who get slightly less to do than the rest of the family -- the always reliable Lakeith Stanfield! Don Johnson! Edi Patterson! Katherine Langford! Jaeden Martell! Noah Segan! Riki Londhome! K Callan! Frank Oz, for crying out loud! -- operate perfectly within the intricate set of cogs that Johnson has mapped out. I could have watched them continue to be terrible to each other for at least an extra hour. I was expecting to love this movie, and I was expecting to love this cast. What I was not expecting was how staggeringly good Ana de Armas is.
Let's talk about Ana de Armas as Marta Cabrera (expect spoilers). First off, her character is remarkable: the daughter of an undocumented immigrant who inadvertently goes head-to-head with a family of evil wealthy white people and out of sheer kindness actually wins. The film doesn't shy away from political observations (one charged family argument about the current occupant of the White House is remarkably effective even with its relative restraint), but the entire thing is taking white liberalism to task just as pointedly as Jordan Peele's Get Out did in 2017. Obviously, these are very different movies, but the comparison is there (as are inevitable comparisons to 2019's other comedy-thrillers about class warfare, including Peele's Us, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillet's Ready or Not, and, of course, Bong's Parasite), but Marta's spot at the center of the film is pretty remarkable. De Armas knocks it out of the park, too -- her eyes have deep wells of unspoken terror and guilt and sadness in them, and even as her body betrays her with her bouncing leg or her projectile vomiting, she remains nearly unflappable as the everywoman wandering around this maze. It's a pretty tremendous performance.
Pretty much everything about this movie worked for me. The gorgeous production values, the perfect score, the magical cast, Johnson's remarkably assured writing and directing. That flawless final shot. If you'll forgive another comparison to Parasite, it's pretty amazing to watch both Johnson and Bong -- filmmakers who are not quite young but certainly not old -- reach a career high-point at virtually the same time, dealing with some similar ideas and dipping from the same river, continuing to grow and make good on the promise of their debuts over a decade ago. I can't wait to see what both of them do next.
I hope we get a whole series of Benoit Blanc mysteries. I hope this cements Ana de Armas as a major star. I hope this becomes the stone-cold classic it has every right to be. The whodunnit is alive and well and vital.

The kitchens symphony
My dad found a tape recording of his mum cooing to him as a baby. He had finally decided to convert them into digital format - who has a tape recorder anymore? It was the first time I had heard her voice. I thought it was beautiful and I felt close to her. It made me realise the significance of voices owned by the people you love. A quality of personality perhaps taken for granted and often overlooked.
As we were listening to the recording our hob started aggressively beeping - our coffee was ready. Both of us hastily ran to turn it off ‘oh just shut up.’ My observations of the voice lead my attention to the soundscape within my kitchen. Whether the coffee screams it’s done, an object sitting on the hob without an invite, the microwave reminding us we left hot soup in its mouth or the dishwasher beeping its awoken. This unique soundscape seems to solely aggravate my family instead of it’s designed intention to inform.
It made me wonder how an object sound alters its interpretation. For instance Nissan used sound design as an opportunity to create a personality for their new electric vehicles. To associate the approaching car with clean energy (Mars , 2019). I can therefore only think the intention of connecting high pitch sounds to the kitchen is to signify modern technology which efficiently cooks.
Most significant is how this soundscape consumes my everyday life due to my current context. No longer do I hear the unique spontaneity of urban life. The urban soundscape is known to reduce efficiency and increase emotional anxiety and blood pressure (Cabrera and Lee, 2000.) I work, socialise, watch T.V and exercise whilst also cooking and eating in my kitchen. Perhaps therefore this deprivation of urban sound is a good thing? But I wonder, what the effects of hearing my kitchen's symphony hour after hour when it is designed only to be heard during meal times, must be. I don’t believe however that urban and technological sounds are inherently bad. After all Jazz music is said to be a musical rendition of the soundscape of the modern city (Thonpson, 2002.) Urban noises, however angrily uncontrolled, inspires creativity in many ways. Perhaps my monotonous kitchen rendition is depriving my sparks in creativity as well as fuelling irritability?
I am determined to think of an alternate solution to my kitchens beeping. Hearing a loved one seems to create a calming response. Elinor Hamilton speaking on the podcast Everything is Alive describes what it’s like to hear her husband, also one of the voices behind  the London Undergrounds trains, informing her which tube to catch - ‘ it's always lovely to hear him,’ and expresses ‘He's looking after me’ (Chillag, 2019.) I believe using a voice or sound of something or someone you love, find amusing or admire may be the solution. This could even be a favourite T.V quote, song or bird call to indicate the microwave is done. Perhaps eliminating the mechanical qualities and the even the act of consciously choosing your own soundscape will transform our indoor spaces into calmer and more productive ones.

Rian Johnson became a famous director when he directed 2017’s controversial The Last Jedi, known for its deconstructionist take on the Star Wars mythos. Some people loved it! Some people didn’t. But if nothing else his take on the story was bold. The movie played with your expectations in ways rarely seen in Star Wars, and it was clear that Johnson wanted to do something different and create a memorable filmgoing experience.
And then a couple of years later, he unveiled his newest project: a film called Knives Out. When the trailer hit the Internet, the movie looked spectacular: a fun and stylish mystery movie, filled with big name actors and awesome set design. It seemed like it would be a promising original film that we’d be talking about for years to come.
Having now seen the movie, I can tell you that these impressions are completely accurate.
Our story goes like this: Harlan Thrombey, a world-renowned best-selling murder mystery novelist, is found dead from an apparent suicide, having cut his own throat in the middle of the night after his eighty-fifth birthday party, which his entire family attended. However, the family is all called back to the house for further investigation by famous private detective Benoit Blanc, who was hired by an anonymous client to look into Harlan’s death. What follows is a lively and fast-paced whodunit (or is it?) as Blanc does his darndest to uncover the family’s secrets and discover what really happened the night that Harlan Thrombey.
Whether or not you liked The Last Jedi, it was a memorable movie in that it contained an awful lot of plot twists. Rian Johnson puts that obsession to good use in the genre that it fits in perfectly: the murder mystery. While ultimately it follow the general shape of a classical murder mystery in the style of an Agatha Christie story, including the detective explaining everything at the end. But the road getting there? It’s a winding thing that will surprise you. Maybe the plot twists won’t surprise you, but the way in which they’re revealed will. Things that feel like they should be revealed in the last third of the film are spilled in the first, only for everything to connect in a slightly different way (or does it?).
Making the movie unique even more than its Plot is its fantastic cast; just about every performer here is bringing his or her A-game to this project. Some highlights: Daniel Craig plays our detective, Benoit Blanc, as a true southern gentleman, albeit one who is, in the tradition of memorable fictional sleuths, a bit different in his approach to thinking. He very easily could have been annoying, but Craig makes him lovable. Christopher Plummer does fantastically as Harlan Thrombey, the body; that sounds lame, but there are several flashbacks of him while he’s alive and he’s able to convey a likable, if a bit aloof figure that loves his family even if he doesn’t always see eye-to-eye with them. He’s not just a sweet old man or a grumpy one; he’s a fully-developed something-in-between old man. Ana de Armas plays Marta Cabrera, Harlan’s good-natured nurse that finds herself in over her head in how the scenario has evolved. Again, her character could easily have been pigeon-holed as a stereotype, and though she does fill certain parts of the ‘Good Immigrant’ cliche, she’s still an endearing enough character to the audience (or is she?).
Jamie Lee Curtis stands out as Linda, Harlan’s oldest daughter and the strongest-willed of the bunch. She’s never likable, exactly (and she’s not meant to be), but of the family she stands out as having a stern and memorable character that’s fun to watch. Her husband Richard is played by Don Johnson as the kind of guy you kind of want to sock in the face, which is the point, as a full-of-himself man who clearly has no idea what’s going on (or does he?). Their son Ransom is played by Chris Evans, going against type as a complete and utter foul-mouthed smarmy douchebag (or is he?) that displays the family’s dysfunction in full force.
Then there’s Joni, played by Toni Collette, the lifestyle guru who’s Harlan’s widowed daughter-in-law. She’s fun, self-centered and a bit out-of-touch with the rest of the family, not as close to them as she thinks she is, even if she is trying (or is she?). Her daughter Meg, played by Katherine Langford, is the progressive activist who always wants to do the right thing (or does she?).
The next thing that makes this movie stick in your head: its setting. A good chunk of this movie takes place in Harlan Thrombey’s house, a massive manor on its own full to the brim with books, sculptures, souvenirs, and of course, knives. One of the detectives even likens it to a Clue board. Every shot within the house clearly establishes the mood as a fun mystery movie that knows exactly the sort of story it’s telling and how to play with the audience’s expectations.
If there’s one weakness I think this movie has though, it’s that some of its cast feels a bit underused. I’ve read that there are deleted scenes featuring more of Walt, played excellently by Michael Shannon, and his wife and child, but ultimately they didn’t add much to the Plot and were cut. Walt himself stands out quite a bit with a few memorable scenes, but his family? Not so much. So these characters feel a bit like there should be more to them, and yet there isn’t. The movie already has a lot going on, so I understand why that material was cut, but it feels a bit off in a film so good at utilizing its resources in other respects.
So see Knives Out! If you love a good mystery movie, I think this will satisfy your hunger. If that’s not your usual fare, this might whet your appetite to it a little. It’s a great, quotable movie with a lovely cast and an amazing story.

ACTORS AND ACTRESSES IN QUESTION
This is going to be my favourite portion of this process, especially with my interest in getting to know the people behind the characters. I feel like I should focus on around 5 female actresses and then 5 male actors, meaning I’m gathering enough content but not too much that it’s overwhelming.
1. Florence Pugh
Tumblr media
Pugh is an English born actress who made her acting debut in 2014 in the film ‘The Falling’, but then began to gain recognition for her work in ‘Lady Macbeth’ (2016).
Though her real breakthrough didn’t happen until 2019, her portrayal of the wrestler Paige in the biographical sports movie ‘Fighting with My Family’ produced by Dwayne Johnson. Following her success from ‘Fighting with My Family’, one of her strongest pieces ‘Midsommar’ was released with her portraying an emotionally damaged woman Dani. She finally peaked with her portrayal of Amy March in ‘Little Women’, which resulted in her receiving not only a BAFTA nomination but also an Academy Award nomination.
While these are some of her best pieces of work have you heard about her upcoming movies or her past pieces that didn’t receive half as much recognition.
2. Victoria Pedretti
Tumblr media
Pedretti is an American born actress who made her acting debut in 2014, participating in two short films. During this time she was focused on her studies, though once she graduated she was represented by The Gersh Agency.
Some of you may know her for her portrayal of Eleanor Crain in the hit Netflix horror series ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ which was released in 2018, this resulted in her receiving both Saturn Award and MTV Award nominations. Though her real climb to success didn’t really begin until 2019 in which she starred in Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’, then in the same year gained real recognition for her portrayal of Love Quinn in the Netflix Thriller ‘You’ and will return to the role for the third Season.
While this is what she’s best known for you should check out some of her beginning projects, as well as those up and coming.
3. Ana De Armas
Tumblr media
De Armas is a Cuban-Spanish actress who made her acting debut back in 2006, in the Spanish film ‘Una rosa de Francia’. Following this she went on to star in the television show El Internado from 2007-2010.
She then began the transition to working in American films, her first being ‘Knock Knock’, which also starred Keanu Reeves. After this she made starred in two other movies, before making her initial breakthrough as the AI hologram Joi in Blade Runner 2049 (2017). Her next big hit was in the mystery film Knives Out (2019), starring as Marta Cabrera.

2. George MacKay
Tumblr media

He started gaining real recognition in 2013, in which he portrayed Eddie in ‘How I Live Now’ alongside Saorise Ronan, followed by the role of Davy in the musical film ‘Sunshine on Leith.

Cast Of The Movie Knives Out
Tumblr media
The new murder mystery movie Knives Out is filled with famous actors many audiences already know and love. But there's one face in the cast who might not be as familiar to fans. For now, at least. In Knives Out, Johnson will play Richard Drysdale, the husband to Jamie Lee Curtis' Linda. Recently, the Tin Cup actor went on The Deep Cut podcast and raved about his experience on set. Knives Out features a massive ensemble cast including Daniel Craig in Knives Out, Christopher Plummer, Chris Evans, Ana De Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, Michael Shannon, Toni Collette.

The new murder mystery movie Knives Out is filled with famous actors many audiences already know and love. But there's one face in the cast who might not be as familiar to fans... for now, at least. Ana de Armas, who plays Marta Cabrera in Knives Out, is a total standout in the film, and has audiences excited to see more of her (which they will).
In Knives Out, De Armas' Marta is the protagonist and caretaker of the famous and wealthy author Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer). When Harlan dies suddenly and gruesomely, Marta is forced to deal with his greedy extended family — and a big secret of her own — while a team of detectives investigate the whole situation. Even among the big, stacked cast, which includes Daniel Craig, Jamie Lee Curtis, Katherine Langford, Chris Evans, Toni Collette, and more, the relative newcomer stands out in her dynamic role.
With Knives Out as well as another major upcoming blockbuster, it's been a busy time for de Armas. 'I’m not complaining, because it’s taken me a long time to get here, and I’m living my dream,” de Armas told the Los Angeles Times. 'This is exactly what I want to be and what I want to do — but gosh, I’m tired. I feel like I repeat that a lot. But I’m tired. I think 2020 will be the year for me to sleep a little bit more.”
The actor might be going to sleep in 2020, but that'll be the year audiences will definitely be seeing a lot more of her. Here are the key facts you need to know to get ready for what's shaping up to be the Year of de Armas:
1. When She Arrived In Hollywood, She Didn't Speak English
De Armas was born in a small town just outside Havana, Cuba, in 1988. At age 18, she became a TV star in Spain, and she then moved to the U.S. in 2014 to take on Hollywood. She didn't speak English when she arrived, so she did months of intensive language studies before landing roles in movies like War Dogs and Blade Runner 2049.
2. She Initially Turned Down 'Knives Out'
The character description for de Armas' character Marta simply said she was a 'pretty Latina caretaker,' and, unhappy with that description, she decided she didn't want to be involved with the project. She explained to The Hollywood Reporter:
Getting an email that described the character like that — without any more information or a script attached because it was high-profile and secret — just really didn’t speak to me. So, because of the character description, my imagination immediately went to a portrayal that was not necessarily very positive or exciting in relation to Latin culture.
Tumblr media
Luckily, she learned Marta was much more nuanced. She said to THR, 'When I finally read the script, I realized that the description didn’t fit at all because Marta is so much more than that.”
3. She's Co-Starring In A Film With Ben Affleck
De Armas and Affleck are playing a wife-andohusband duo in the upcoming thriller Deep Water. The movie is expected to come out toward the end of 2020.
4. She's The Next 'Bond Girl'
James Bond is known for having a badass woman by his side in each movie, and de Armas is going to play the part in the upcoming No Time to Kill. Unlike some Bond films of the past, however, the Los Angeles Times reports there will be 'a very different dynamic' between 007 and his co-star this time around.
Knives Out is in theaters now.
By/Nov. 18, 2019 6:18 pm EDT/Updated: Oct. 19, 2020 12:01 pm EDT
After directing critically-acclaimed films like Brick, Looper, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson turned his attention to the murder mystery genre, giving us the star-studded Knives Out. The movie currently sits at a lofty 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, which is quite the accolade, and Vox's Alissa Wilkinson describes the flick as 'a delightful Agatha Christie-style whodunnit made for 2019 America.'
Perhaps the film's most obvious asset is its wildly talented cast, consisting of former superheroes, super villains, super spies, a few legendary Hollywood superstars, and everything in between. But while watching a murder mystery movie, the only thing you want to be trying to solve is who the killer is, not who the actor or actress playing the killer is and what other films you've seen them in before. So, before you watch the movie, here's a handy who's who for Rian Johnson's whodunnit, Knives Out.
Daniel Craig steals the show as Detective Benoit Blanc
Unless you've been living under a rock for the past decade, chances are good that you're familiar with Daniel Craig and his prestigious body of work. The English actor's breakout role was that of the iconic 00 Agent, James Bond, in 2006's Casino Royale. It was a role that, thanks to multiple sequels (four to date), landed him on Forbes' World's Highest Paid Actors list in 2015. However, the handsome Brit is far from a one-trick pony. Over the years, Craig has excelled in a vast array of genres, ranging from dramas like 2002's Oscar-winning Road to Perdition to comedies like 2017's Logan Lucky. He's certainly come a long way from playing a love-struck stableboy in Disney's mid-'90s medieval stinker, A Kid in King Arthur's Court.
In Knives Out, Craig plays Benoit Blanc, a private detective brought on to investigate the apparent suicide of a famous crime novelist. Craig was actually the first actor to sign on to the project, and he was apparently flattered to have been offered the part. As he explained to Cinema Blend, 'I hadn't read something like that (screenplay) before, and I was just over the moon that he (Johnson) offered it to me.' With a lead like Craig, it's no mystery why so many critics are crazy about Knives Out.
Chris Evans stars as Ransom Drysdale
Agatha Christie lovers ... assemble! Although the MCU's Captain America obviously won't be making an appearance in Johnson's murder mystery, Chris Evans, who's played the star-spangled Avenger several times since 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger, will be. The Boston-bred hunk has flexed his dramatic ability in films like Before We Go and Gifted, but not as often as he's flexed his impressive physical physique in action flicks like Push, The Losers, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.
With an apparent affinity for playing 'the good guy,' Evans has played not one but two different superheroes, first starring as the Human Torch in the Fantastic Four franchise. His role of Ransom Drysdale in Knives Out, however, will be quite the opposite. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Evans explained, 'I'm usually tasked with playing guys who are a little more noble, and this guy is a little bit more vile. It's fun.'
Toni Collette is Joni Thrombey in Knives Out
Although it didn't exactly light up the box office, 1992's The Efficiency Expert, starring acting legends like Anthony Hopkins, Russell Crowe, and even a young Ben Mendelsohn, marked the film debut of Toni Collette. In the decades to come, the Australian actress would enjoy a highly successful career, most evidenced by her massive award-season love.
Cast Of The Movie Knives Out
In 2009, she was cast as the lead role (or, perhaps more appropriately, lead roles) in Showtime's United States of Tara. As Tara, a mother coping with dissociative identity disorder, Collette earned wins at both the Golden Globes and the Emmys. On the big screen, the actress has excelled in dramatic comedies like Little Miss Sunshine and About a Boy. However, she's perhaps most recognized for her work in a pair of iconic horror flicks: 1999's unforgettably twisty The Sixth Sense and 2018's disturbingly dark Hereditary.
In Knives Out, the decorated actress plays Joni Thrombey, a 'lifestyle guru' (drawing obvious inspiration from Gwyneth Paltrow and her company, Goop) and daughter-in-law of murder victim Harlan Thrombey. When speaking to Deadline, Collette showered the murder mystery's script with praise, saying, 'It was all in the writing. In reading it, it just kept opening up and changing, and it was so swift, and so smooth, and so surprising.'
Katherine Langford appears as Meg Thrombey
What Katherine Langford's filmography lacks in quantity, it makes up for in quality. At the ripe age of 20, the young Australian actress landed the role of ill-fated high school student Hannah Baker in the Netflix smash series 13 Reasons Why. Langford stole the show as Hannah, even earning a Golden Globe nominee for her performance. Her newfound stardom landed her parts in two movies in 2018, The Misguided and Love, Simon.
Although she'd previously worked with some fairly big names, such as Jennifer Garner and Josh Duhamel, Langford was admittedly quite starstruck when seeing her Knives Out co-stars in action. Talking with Yahoo! TV, Langford said, 'I get so in awe of everyone. ... I've watched all of these people.' While sharing the screen with A-listers like Daniel Craig and Chris Evans must've been incredible, the young starlet, who plays Meg Thrombey in the whodunnit, went on to specifically give praise to her fellow Aussie actress. 'Toni Collette, who plays my mom in this film, she's a legend in her own right. To work a lot with her is amazing, and to work with everyone is amazing.'
Knives Out features Michael Shannon as Walt Thrombey
Michael Shannon has quietly evolved into one of the most well-rounded actors in Hollywood. The two-time Oscar-nominated actor has appeared in a plethora of movies over the past 20 years, ranging from action blockbusters to dramatic thrillers. The first movie he ever popped up in was actually 1993's classic comedy, Groundhog Day, but he's really made much more of a name for himself in serious roles, such as the mentally disturbed John Givings in 2008's Revolutionary Road.
You might also recognize Shannon from parts he played in films throughout the 2000s, including Vanilla Sky, 8 Mile, and Bad Boys II. He's given notable performances for director Jeff Nichols in movies like Take Shelter andMidnight Special, and on HBO's Boardwalk Empire, he portrayed Nelson Van Alden, an agent for the Bureau of Prohibition. He even went toe-to-toe with Henry Cavill's Superman as General Zod in 2013's Man of Steel.
In Knives Out, the Kentucky-bred actor plays Walt Thrombey, the new CEO of his father's publishing house. In an interview with Slash Film, Shannon mentioned how great it was to work with Rian Johnson on the set, saying, 'I had a blast, man, that was so much fun. ... Also, Rian is a super, super sweet guy.' Having a sweet boss must be a major plus on a movie production.
Ana de Armas is playing Marta Cabrera
Although her official acting debut came in a Spanish film in 2006, Ana de Armas' Hollywood career really started in 2015, starring alongside Keanu Reeves as Bell in the dark thriller Knock Knock. After that, she played Miles Teller's girlfriend, Iz, in War Dogs, and then the holographic Joi in the trippy Blade Runner 2049.
Although she's starring alongside Daniel Craig in 2020's new Bond film, No Time to Die, the gorgeous Cuban starlet first shared the screen with him in Knives Out. As Marta Cabrera, the recently deceased Harlan Thrombey's live-in nurse, de Armas is one of the prime murder suspects. But while de Armas admittedly had a wonderful experience on set, shooting in Boston had one particular downside. As she explained, 'It was my first time in Boston. It was freezing, for a Cuban especially.' The actress may have been cold, but is she actually Knives Out's cold-blooded killer?
Jamie Lee Curtis is showing up as Linda Drysdale
Jamie Lee Curtis is truly an American treasure. The California-raised actress has appeared in so many films and TV shows through the years that it's hard to keep track of them all. If you're a horror fan, you probably know her best as Laurie Strode in John Carpenter's Halloween franchise. However, she's so much more than a scream queen. Curtis has starred in action classics like True Lies, kids' movies like Freaky Friday, and a slew of feel-good comedies, including My Girl and You Again.
With an ensemble cast as star-studded as that of Knives Out, it's hard to imagine any one person really standing out. However, when speaking to Entertainment Tonight, director Rian Johnson had a clear cut MVP: Jamie Lee Curtis as Linda Drysdale. The award-winning actress would show up early to set every day, even when she wasn't scheduled to be in the scene. 'I was like, 'Jamie Lee Curtis is here! Film her!' She got into scenes she wasn't even supposed to be in — just because she was there!' Talk about being in the right place at the right time!
Knives Out stars Don Johnson as Richard Drysdale
Tumblr media
Detective James Crockett has certainly aged well. Don Johnson, who won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of the snazzily dressed, undercover detective in the classic '80s TV series Miami Vice, remains a big name in Hollywood, still popping up in movies while well into his 60s. Since 2010, the Missouri-born actor has starred in a few Western-themed action flicks, such as Machete and Django Unchained, as well as a couple of romantic comedies, including The Other Woman and Book Club. He's also been an apparent go-to-guy for HBO, starring in both Eastbound & Down as Kenny Powers' father, Eduardo Sanchez, and more recently as police sheriff Judd Crawford in Watchmen.
In Knives Out, Johnson will play Richard Drysdale, the husband to Jamie Lee Curtis' Linda. Recently, the Tin Cup actor went on The Deep Cut podcast and raved about his experience on set. He also disclosed that he was able to see an early screening of the film, and it blew him away. 'Actually it's so good that I am super proud of it.'
Christopher Plummer is playing Harlan Thrombey
Canadian actor Christopher Plummer solidified his status as an acting great by taking home an Oscar for his portrayal of Hal, a closeted gay man, in 2010's Beginners. With acting credits dating back to the 1950s, Plummer has enjoyed an exceptionally long and fruitful career, and it's still going strong. In 2001, he played Dr. Rosen in the Oscar-winning A Beautiful Mind, and in 2017, he played J. Paul Getty in the Oscar-nominated All the Money in the World. He certainly has a knack of being attached to prestigious projects, going all the way back to The Sound of Music.
In Knives Out, Plummer is playing Harlan Thrombey, a famous mystery author who's found dead. In the film, Harlan is tended to by his live-in nurse, Marta, played by Ana de Armas, and it sounds as though the two performers really developed a strong relationship on set. When The Hollywood Reporter caught up with Plummer at TIFF, the Barrymore actor was asked, of all the people in attendance at the film festival, who he would most like to be stuck in an elevator with. And the man replied, 'Apart from my wife, I think Marta (de Armas), our beautiful lady who is such a good actress. ... That would be very pleasant.' It's safe to assume that most guys would agree with Plummer's response.
Jaeden Martell is taking on the role of Jacob Thrombey
He may look young, but don't make the mistake of thinking Jaeden Martell isn't already the man. He's not even 20 years old yet, and he's already starred in a couple of major movies and TV shows. Before playing Bill Denbrough, the leader of the Losers' Club, in 2017's It, the young star shined alongside Bill Murray in 2014's St. Vincent, and he also played Johnny Masters in Showtime's often raunchy drama, Masters of Sex. (He was also the title character in The Book of Henry ... although the less said about that particular film, the better.)
Cast Of The Movie Knives Out Full
In Knives Out, Martell plays Jacob Thrombey, the internet-trolling son of Michael Shannon's Walt. Interestingly enough, this isn't the first time Martell and Shannon played father and son on the big screen. In 2016, the duo co-starred in the thrilling sci-fi mystery, Midnight Special. It must be nice to have a father figure like Shannon on set.
Movie Knives Out Cast
Lakeith Stanfield will try to solve the mystery as Detective Lieutenant Elliot
Life has been especially good for Lakeith Stanfield over the past ten years. The California-raised actor's first big break was getting cast as Marcus in Short Term 12, alongside Brie Larson. He then was cast as Jimmie Lee Jackson in 2014's Oscar-winning Martin Luther King Jr. biopic, Selma. Since then, his career has really caught fire. Although he's appeared in popular films like Get Out, Sorry to Bother You, and Netflix's Death Note, perhaps his most recognizable role is that of the philosophical stoner Darius in Donald Glover's comedic drama Atlanta. Then again, he also portrayed a young Snoop Dogg in 2015's Straight Outta Compton, so you be the judge.
For Knives Out, Stanfield is playing Lieutenant Elliot, a detective investigating Harlan Thrombey's death who initially believes it to be a suicide. However, as more clues begin to surface, his character starts to suspect something more sinister is afoot. The award-winning actor will, much like the audience, try to solve Rian Johnson's whodunnit.

Riki Lindhome will be appearing in Knives Out as Donna Thrombey
Who Is The Cast Of Movie Knives Out
Riki Lindhome is undoubtedly one funny chick, but she doesn't limit herself to just comedy. Although she and fellow comedian Kate Micucci make up the comedy duo Garfunkel & Oates, Lindhome's first on-screen part was as Mardell Fitzgerald in Clint Eastwood's Oscar-winning Million Dollar Baby. After that, she landed the recurring role of Juliet in the sixth season of the Gilmore Girls, as well as parts in films like My Best Friend's Girl, Changeling, and The Last House on the Left.
Cast Of The Movie Knives Out Cast
In Johnson's murder mystery, the Emmy-nominated actress is playing Donna Thrombey, the wife of Michael Shannon's Walt and mother of Jaeden Martell's Jacob. In addition to working with some major movie stars, Lindhome has certainly enjoyed the movie's many twists and turns, telling Yahoo! Entertainment, 'You see a lot of movies, and they'll have like one big twist. With Knives Out, there's just one after the other after the other. ... By the end everything's woven together in this sort of masterful puzzle.' Count us in!

The Oscars 2020
The last two years (2018 and 2019), I've managed to watch every single Oscars feature film, partially at least due to being in the US in the lead up to the Oscars, so being able to capture those last few films that seem to be nowhere else in the world besides a few bespoke cinemas in New York or Los Angeles.
This year, however, I knew well ahead of time that I wouldn't be able to do this, and as a result, my completist tendencies were broken enough to make me not even bother seeing all the films I could see. In fact, this year, I missed 7 films, 3 of which I couldn't find by any legitimate means, and 4 of which I could have seen but just went "eh...". Missing from the former category are the foreing films Corpus Christi and Les Misérables, plus Richard Jewell, which infuriatingly comes out in cinemas here in Australia on Thursday. The films I actively decided to skip were Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (I'd subjected myself to the first one, which was enough for me), the "live action" remake of The Lion King, Frozen II (only up for Best Song), and Breakthrough, an evangelical Christian film again only up for Best Song. I feel comfortable with my choices here.
I also, as usual, watched the short films, which I'll talk about at the end. This time, I watched all the Live Action and Animated films, and 3/5 of the short documentaries. The other two I couldn't find before the Oscars.
I'll probably be a bit briefer in my write-ups of some of these films than I usually am, mostly due to time pressure. But some which deserve it (both good and bad), I'll give the regular treatment to. Anyway, let's get started:
1. Knives Out
Topping my Oscars list this year is Knives Out, which was an absolute delight of a film. Often times, I enjoy finding the hidden treasures in the Oscars list: films like Away From Her, First Reformed, On Body & Soul or The Broken Circle Breakdown. But this year I have to give Best Film to one of the actual Best Film nominees. Because this was just a brilliant piece of filmmaking. At times, it delivers the best whodunnit story of the past decade, at others it feels like it's lampooning every whodunnit since Agatha Christie, but it's done with such joy and love with every frame that I couldn't help but watch this with a permanent grin on my face. It's an excellent cast they've assembled here, and you could talk about the pitch perfect performance from anyone, but you have to single out Ana de Armas as MArta Cabrera, the suspect who throws up when she tells a lie (I mean, what a concept), and Daniel Craig as the "southern gentleman" detective Benoit Blanc (I will watch a hundred movies revolving around him solving cases, please make this a franchise). What's more, the film kept me guessing right up to the end, thanks to a whip-smart script from writer-director Rian Johnson, one of the most inventive and exciting directors working at the moment. I wasn't exactly sure, before I started this writeup, what would actually end up at #1 this year, but seeing Knives Out at the top of the list I realise it should have been obvious.
2. Little Women
Another truly wonderful film this year was Greta Gerwig's Little Women. I'd seen Gillian Armstrong's adaptation from 1994, and loved it, but this is better. Taking the smart choice to tell the tale in non-linear time, it manages to cleverly pull together contrasts between the youth and early adulthood of the characters, and play on our sympathies in new and revelatory ways. In many respects, this film makes you see the story in a different light to any adaptation that's come before it, and it's a rare thing to be able to do that with such a canonical text; the result is honestly very moving in a way I'd not found from this story before. The performances throughout are excellent, of course, Saoirse Ronan is always very strong, of course, but I also loved the support, especially from Florence Pugh and Emma Watson, who is genuinely putting her early-years-of-Harry-Potter far behind her. Timothée Chalamet honestly always feels like he's playing the same character to me, but somehow it continues to be charming on screen. All up, an excellent, affecting film. Oh, and can we just mention how hard done by Gerwig can feel for not getting a Best Director nod? Hmm?
3. The Lighthouse
Thirdly, we have The Lighthouse, a nightmarish comic horror, which is completely predicated on being compelled by Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson. And I'm only human, so of course this worked for me. The two leads are brilliant here: Dafoe's lighthouse supervisor is a thrilling antagonist, with enough mystery to engage you. Pattinson's newcomer is unsettled in a way that mirrors the audience, especially as the film progresses. It's shot in stark, wonderful black-and-white, with a cinematic style that dovetails perfectly with the desolation and destruction of the film, while the 1:1 aspect ratio adds to the overall sense of claustrophobia. It's a quite singular film, one of the most original and interesting pieces of cinema I've seen in many years.
4. For Sama
Topping the documentary stakes this year is For Sama, a film set during the siege of Aleppo, from the point of view of a mother narrating the early life of her young daughter, born as the regime forces encircle, and ultimately recapture the city. It's quite a brilliant, emotional and affecting piece of filmmaking; one, I must admit, that I had to pause half way through to get myself together again. There are scenes here that are stark and harsh, such as the parents exiting the city for Turkey, avoiding the encircling army via back roads, all with Sama strapped inside a baby carrier on her father's chest. It was a beautiful exposition of life under siege, because it brought to the fore that shared human experience. It was an extremely powerful film, and one which I truly hopes ends up taking out the award in its category.
5. Pain & Glory
Next up we have a truly excellent film from Pedro Almodóvar, his best in many many years. Helming the performances is Antonio Banderas as an aging director dealing with a lack of creativity and a degredation in his health. Reconnecting with the actor with whom he most famously collaborated, he takes up heroin, and reminisces about his early life as a young boy, and the discovery of his sexuality. It's such a rich film, without an easy narrative. It's a film that, like life, shows the many turns and dead-ends that lead us to the present. Like I said, I think this is one of Almodóvar's best, and for a director with such a rich oeuvre, that's no small thing.
6. Parasite
Eveyone in the world seems to have been absolutely blown away by this film, in a way that I was not. That's not to say that this isn't a good film, because here it sits at #6 in my list of Oscar movies. But this feels like another entry in what's a really strong cinematic tradition coming out of South Korea at the moment. It doesn't help that I find Bong Joon-ho one of the less subtle directors from the country (for example, I deplored Snowpiercer, admittedly, a much, much worse film than this one). But even compare this film against another Korean film from last year, Lee Chang-dong's Burning, and this feels like an almost cartoonish portrayal of similar themes. I know, this writeup talks mostly about not-this-film, but I'm probably mostly talking about how much better Korean cinema is than this one example. Anyway, when Parasite inevitably wins Best Internation Feature this year, it will hopefully get more people interesting in the excellent cinema coming out of this country. And that's nothing but a good thing.
7. The Two Popes
I honestly found this film to be thoroughly engaging and amusing, and found myself rapt in the machinations of the elections of Pope Benedict and Pope Francis, as well as the theological debates between the two when Benedict was considering his resignation. It helps that the pairing of Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins is perfect, with each an ample match for the other. And the script sparkles with a cleverness that often wrings a wry smile from your lips. I very much enjoyed it—and while it feels like the kind of film which just rounds out the numbers come Oscars time, I hope that it will have the longevity it deserves.
8. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
Another charmingly unassuming film, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood follows the story of an investigative reporter, known for being hard on his subjects, who gets assigned the task of interviewing beloved children's entertainer Mr Rogers. In this latter role, Tom Hanks is brilliant: so warmhearted and human that you get a sense of Mr Rogers both on and off screen (subtly different but no less magical in either). It's perhaps fair though that Best Supporting Actor is this film's only nod. Otherwise, it's fairly straightforward, but no less affecting for it.
9. Harriet
I was really pleasantly surprised by this film: a biopic of abolitionist Harriet Tubman from Kasi Lemmons, which has been received in fairly lukewarm terms by critics more generally. It follows something of a standard biopic format, but it always manages to ensure the story ticks along. I was thoroughly engaged throughout the film, and always enjoyed wherever the film was taking me. At least part of the appeal comes from the strong central performance from Cynthia Erivo (an O away from an EGOT, I'll point out), who presents the strength of Tubman with a human realness. A much better film than you've probably heard, if you've heard about it at all.
10. Marriage Story
Another very affecting film, that explicates the trauma that divorce can be, even when undertaken in the most amicable situation imaginable. It's the kind of film which feels a bit like an emotional workout. There are good performances throughout, especially, I feel from Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver in the leads, and weirdly, less so from Laura Dern, who actually gets a nod for Best Supporting Actress here (she was better in Little Women). She’s the short priced favourite to actually win it though, so good for her I guess.
11. 1917
Apparently the front-runner to take out Best Picture, this is indeed a good film, and a technically excellent one. It tells the tale of an impossible mission of two young men sent from the trenches into enemy territory, and does so in a carefully edited way to make it look like one continuous take. As a result, it gains a senss of immediacy and power that other films lack (especially ones which rely on rapid fire cuts to capture the madness of a battle). It's honestly one of the best war films I've seen in, well, probably ever. It's not a genre I generally like all that much, but the fact that this managed to find itself so high on this list is a testament to its quality.
12. Klaus
I found this an utterly charming animated film. It's from a new studio, created from ex-Disney animators whose goal apparently is to see if they could capture what traditional animation would have become had the big studios not all switched to computer animation instead. The answer is that it is quite beautiful, in particular the way they integrate the characters and the scenery. The film itself tells an alternative origin story of Santa Claus, and a redemptive tale of a rich playboy sent to prove his worth in the world (which doesn't work out exactly as you might expect). It's honestly just a lovely piece of film making. It perhaps feels like it's from a different age, and that's both to its advantage and disadvantage. But there's certainly something worthwhile in it. I'll honestly look forward to what Serio Pablos does next.
13. Toy Story 4
Hot on the heels of Klaus is Toy Story 4. You know the deal by now. Just when you think there's a nice easy place for ending the Toy Story franchise, they come up with another way to extend it, and it fits perfectly. Where 3 explored the themes of what happens to toys when their children grow up, 4 explores what happens when toys get lost or forgotten altogether. It also amusingly touches on the whole concept of toys becoming alive—what is a toy, and what is garbage becomes a key question of the film. It's also beautifully animated, with a level of detail which is exquisite—and yet it still feels like it's suitably within the style of the franchise overall. A good film. I feel like Toy Story as a whole could finish here happily. But I've felt that since the first film, and I've always been proven wrong. So, Toy Story 5, have at me.
14. American Factory
An interesting film, about a Chinese corporation which opens a factory in the midwest USA, thereby bringing back the vaunted manufacturing jobs to working class America. The conflict comes from the cultural disconnects between the expectation of the corporation and the workers, especially as there are moves to unionise the workforce. There's a lot to unpack here, especially when you consider the incentives that were given to the corporation to open where they were. But it's not overly political either—rather, it is, but it's presented in such a way as to appear neutral; letting you the audience make up your own mind. The fact that this is the first film produced by the Obama's production company is not lost on me.
15. Ad Astra
I'm honestly surprised this is as high as it is, because in many ways this is a bad film. There's some truly shockingly poor science and plot points in this, and the emotional connection of the film is weak. But what I honestly loved, and which I kept coming back to, is the world building. As we move out through the solar system, we see the wilder and less civilised reaches of space come through piece by piece. From the genteel comfort of a Virgin Galactic flight to the moon, to the rough and rugged outpost of Mars, to the isolation of a solo flight to Neptune. There's something so believable and meditative about it. But, like I said, the brilliance of this doesn't eradicate the bad parts, and if you don't particularly enjoy what I did in this film, it's easy to focus on jumping between spaceships through Neptune's rings using a door as a shield. I mean, jeez.
16. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
I really, really wish that Tarantino would realise what he's really good at as a filmmaker. And it's not violence or shots of women's feet, like he thinks it is. He is truly excellent in managing to extract tension and drama from otherwise benign and potentially overextended conversational set pieces. It's most infuriating in this film, because in so many ways, this film is excellent: one of his best, right up until the last sequence, when you feel as though Tarantino lost the will to resist his natural urges. It's such a shame, because it could have been the moment when you feel like Tarantino has matured as a film maker. But no, let's have a flamethrower, yeah?
17. I Lost My Body
An interesting animated film about a young man in Paris finding his own path in the world, juxtaposed with the bizarre counter story of a dismembered hand searching for its body again. It's beautifully animated, and actualyl quite emotional when it gets to its conclusion. Not the best animated film this year, but another that shows the interesting places animated film can go.
18. Rocketman
Another fairly straight forward biopic, but I feel one which does its job admirably. It's honestly a fairly intriguing story, and one which director Dexter Fletcher tells admirably. Especially good is the integration of the music into the picture, which is often something that feels janky, or else cops out by ensuring that all music is diegetic. Anyway, I thought a pretty good film all up.
19. The Edge of Democracy
Another good documentary, this one explicating the fight for democracy in Brazil, in particular the threat of corruption tainting otherwise socially responsible politicians, and the rise of the far-right in recent years. There are a lot of parallels to be seen in this film and other western democracies, and the story of Brazil is told to be both personal and universal.
20. Jojo Rabbit
I was honestly more disappointed in this than anything else, because the premise is wack, and I trusted Taika Waititi to pull it off. But it's tonally very odd, in a way that is obviously intentional, but which often means that its impact is blunted. I really wanted to be pummelled between the extremes of the humour and the horrors of the end of the Nazi regime, and this film feels like it pulls its punches at every turn, possibly because each element numbs the other. It's not all that funny, nor is it that emotionally impactful as a result, as much as it probably wants to think it's both. Anyway, it's a shame, because I wanted more from this.
21. The Irishman
Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of Martin Scorsese. But I can appreciate his craft, and there's certainly something to be said for a film like this, which is genuinely very much the kind of picture he was making in his heyday. It's also a fine moment to get Pacino and De Niro back together, as well as a technical achievement in their de-aging, which is seamlessly done. But what you'll find I'm not talking about is the plot, or the characters. They're fine, but they don't grip me on a human level, and while it's kind of fun to watch the endless stream of gangsters arrive and depart, they leave very minimal impact. That's generally my problem with it, I guess. Epic in scope, but no space for real human connection.
22. Judy
A reasonable biopic, documenting the latter period of Judy Garland's life, leading up to her last marriage and death. It's a sympathetic portrait, in particular when engaging with Garland's early years (told in flashbacks). The main draw, of course, and the sole nomination it receives here, is Renée Zellweger in the lead, who can be quite challenging as an actress to me, but who here completely disappears into the role of Garland. The rest is only so good, but it's a fair nomination for Best Actress.
23. Ford v Ferrari
This film honestly has some things going for it, and I'm going to probably malign it unfairly for being too much of a banal historical drama in the way that biopics often can be. Partly, the choice of story is poor, because there's a true sense that Henry Ford Jr the Fourth or whoever he is, is a really nasty piece of work, and for too long in the story he is at least the force behind the protagonists, if not the protagonist himself. That really put me off to some extent, and managed to completely detach me from any true emotion in the story. Otherwise, it's a fairly straightforward, stock-standard success-against-the-odds underdog story. There's a place for that, but not a place near the top of my list.
24. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
Eh, the discourse has already covered this for me hasn't it? This was a disappointing end to the Star Wars trilogy, especially after Rian Johnson had managed to inject something meaningful into the previous episode. But, there's still at least the spectacle to be had, and there's always something intrinsically enjoyable about spending time in this universe, even when it's done as blandly as this.
25. How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
I'm honestly not a huge fan of this franchise, although I have a soft spot for this particular film now, as it's the first film I've managed to watch all the way through with my son Hal (he is now an avowed fan of all things Toothless). This particular outing sees the village grappling with the question of what is truly best for the dragons themselves, especially as Toothless starts to find himself enamoured of a female Night Fury. It's perhaps an interesting place to take the film, thematically, but as with all of these films, what happens in between the big strokes of the idea is largely interchangeable.
26. Honeyland
It's probably actually a bit surprising that this is so low, because this is a very much acclaimed documentary, about a woman who lives off the land in North Macedonia, in particular using traditional techniques for gathering wild honey. The conflict arises when a nearby family tries to modernise the process, thereby damaging the natural hives on which the woman relies. There's things to enjoy about it, but aside from the obvious thematic elements, I found the film rather dour and tired. It's one of those films which has merit for merely showing that there are stories everywhere in life. But that wasn't enough for me this time around.
27. Joker
I was quite ambivalent about this film when I first saw it, but my ambivalence has turned one way rather than the other as time has passed, so it finds itself down towards the bottom of this list. Firstly, the good: Joaquin Phoenix is always a compelling presence on screen, and even when his characters are inscrutable as Arthur Fleck, there's something engaging about watching him doing his thing. But thematically, this film is a mess, especially in its engagement with violence, and its questions about the underlying discontent in the populace at large. You could read this as an indictment of the masses' willingness to be spurred to evil through a charismatic leader and bit of misinformation. But I'm more inclined to believe that director Todd Phillips just doesn't really know what he's doing, and so the film is unintentionally ambiguous on this. I haven't even gotten into the fact that plot-wise, it, shall we say, "borrows liberally" from Scorsese's The King of Comedy (actually, one of his best, despite my lukewarm Scorsese appreciation above). So yeah, in the end, the more I thought on this film, the less I liked it. Betting wise, you'd be a fool to go against Phoenix to take home the award though.
28. Bombshell
I was quite surprised at how much I didn't like this film, because I feel as though there was the potential for this to be a wonderfully astute indictment of a whole world. But instead, this took the very disappointing route of taking down Roger Ailes and not what he represents. There's a sense at the end of the film that everyone can dust off their hands and say "good job, sexism is solved forever". And this is not something that they engage with in this film—that is to say, they don't examine the fact that this is a potential interpretation. In fact, at the end of the film, the tone is more celebratory because "yeah, we won! The good guys won!". It makes the film feel overall very shallow or hollow.
29. Missing Link
Lowest of the Best Animated feature films, is this very underwhelming stop-motion number. Animation-wise, it's quite nicely done, and technically very strong. But the plot and the characterisations are very bland. Zach Galafianakis's sasquatch is annoying to the point of tears, and the other characters are stereotypes. There's not enough that's interesting in the film. That's the problem. I do feel a little bit bad for the film, because this was also an amazing box-office bomb. And it feels more like it just "wasn't for me" than it feels like it deserved to fail spectacularly. But, to be honest, I do think it has itself to blame for both.
30. Avengers: Endgame
A perennial entry towards the bottom of my Oscars list is the latest Marvel film, in particular the Avengers films. The problem with all of the Avengers films is that they cannot at all give enough screen time to any character to warrant their inclusion in the film, and as a result the whole film feels pointless. This is never more obvious than in Endgame, where they're attempting to both wrap up an entire era of the Marvel enterprise, and include all of the characters they've introduced to this point. I really, really, don't get the appeal, and I honestly think this is one of the messiest examples of the Avengers films. I would have thought the time travel aspect would have given me something to enjoy at least. But, no.
31. The Cave
Bottom of the list this year is a very surprising entry, but one which ultimately I felt I could justify being this low. It's another film from Syria, again telling of doctors working in a beseiged region of the country, this time Ghouta, as the forces of Bashar al-Assad bomb and attack. But this film was honestly, so unbelievably dull. It very much has the philosophy of "point a camera at something and see what happens", but very much misses out on constructing anything interesting from the resulting footage. There's a sense of, yes, claustrophobia and anxiety as the bombs come ever closer. But there's almost no narrative thrust. There's no human connection. There's not enough focus on any character to feel like you're connecting with them. I was unsurprised after this film, when I discovered that its director also directed Last Men in Aleppo, a documentary short I watched a couple of years ago, which also managed to turn what should have been an excellent idea into something boring. I think it's extremely telling that when there are two films covering such similar ground in the same year (as For Sama above does), one can be so emotionally devastating and one can be so dull.
Anyway, that's it for the features. As always, I also attempted to watch the short films. I didn't manage to see all of them this year, as two of the documentary shorts (St. Louis Superman and Learning To Skateboard In A War Zone (If You’re A Girl)) weren't available before the Oscars telecast. But the rest I'll present in order here from favourite to least favourite. But as always, all of these are excellent, and all (maybe apart from the bottom) worthy of your time:
1. Une Soeur (A Sister) (Live Action) 2. In the Absence (Documentary) 3. Hair Love (Animated) 4. Sister (Animated) 5. Brotherhood (Live Action) 6. Life Overtakes Me (Documentary) 7. Nefta Football Club (Live Action) 8. Memorable (Animated) 9. The Neighbors' Window (Live Action) 10. Saria (Live Action) 11. Daughter (Animated) 12. Walk Run Cha-Cha (Documentary) 13. Kitbull (Animated)
And, last, but not least, is my annual Oscars ballot. How would I vote if I could, and the only things I could vote for are the nominees? Read on:
Best Picture: Little Women Best Actor: Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory) Best Actress: Cynthis Erivo (Harriet) Best Supporting Actor: Tom Hanks (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood) Best Supporting Actress: Florence Pugh (Little Women) Best Animated Feature: Klaus Best Cinematography: The Lighthouse Best Costume Design: Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood Best Director: Sam Mendes (1917) Best Documentary Feature: For Sama Best Documentary Short: In the Absence Best Film Editing: Parasite Best International Feature: Pain and Glory Best Makeup & Hairstyling: Judy Best Original Score: Little Women Best Orignal Song: "(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again" from Rocketman Best Production Design: Parasite Best Animated Short: Hair Love Best Live Action Short: A Sister Best Sound Editing: Ford v Ferrari Best Sound Mixing: 1917 Best Visual Effects: The Irishman Best Adapted Screenplay: Little Women Best Original Screenplay: Knives Out
And we're done. See you again next year.

TWITL – week thirteen – the way days blur
I’m not sure why I didn’t start this post during the weekend. Then again, what is a weekend when you spend everyday at home? The days have really just blurred together and every time I think about what day it might be, I have to confirm by asking the hubby or looking at the calendar. Small things compared to the rest of this whole situation.
It’s not so hard, is it, adhering to the shelter in place order? It seems like such a small thing for all of us to do to get flatten the curve. You can still go outside for short bits for exercise and such, as long as you do the social distancing. Why do people think we can’t or shouldn’t do all that we can to get through this?
the pattern
As you can see from the above picture, I screencapped William Gregory Lee and Charles Mesure and featured them on my IG. To my delight, Charles received a more than fair amount of likes. Who knew so many people had great taste? At the very least, Greg and Charles provided some variety to my IG. Love that!
work face
So I go back to work on Wednesday. I’m not sure what that will look like but I think first off, I’m going to wear jeans with the thought that we won’t be open to the public. I do have a fair amount of work on my desk right now and it will definitely keep me busy for the coming days. I did go in one day last week for a few hours. It wasn’t so bad since no one was in my building. I practiced my social distancing when I did go to the front building for couple of things. It was nice to speak with a couple of my co-workers.
Santiago Cabrera on Star Trek Picard
TV
Star Trek: Picard – The first season finale aired. I thought it was a good ending and my favorite scene made me almost cry. I thought it was a proper end to one of the characters (I won’t say who just in case). On the whole, I found the first season of Picard to be immensely satisfying. I enjoyed it very much even though it’s different from TNG, which is my favorite Star Trek series. My heart will always be with that series but I am looking forward to next adventures.
Tiger King (Netflix) – I kept seeing people I follow talking about this show and we decided to watch it. By the end of it, I thought, WHAT THE HELL DID WE JUST WATCH?! Yes, it was entertaining. Yes, it was a train wreck. Yes, we couldn’t stop watching. The CRAZY thing was seeing someone familiar in episode 4. If you know, you know… None of the “main” people featured were particularly sympathetic and I kept wanting the tigers to turn on the humans. I feel like those big cats were plotting the demise of their human caretakers. You could see it in their eyes…
The English Game (Netflix) – This was an interesting mini-series about the beginnings of football (or soccer, as we call it here in the US). I thought it was well done, though it apparently takes some liberties with the timeline. Nonetheless, an enjoyable watch, especially if you like football.
The Mentalist – I’m a little sad we got to the end but I did like how it ended. It was a good show (from what I saw of it). Greg’s episode was all right. His character deserved what he got in the end. My friend is turning into a silver fox, I must say.
current best nine
The stuff keeping sane during this time…
Tyler & Sabina – The live IG stories have been so entertaining and wonderful! I love them so much. I love the acoustic sets and the Sunday brunches.
Simon Kassianides – Simon has been reading a poem every day and I will keep telling the world how much I love it. It’s super lovely that he’s keeping up with it and how can one resist poetry recited with an English accent? One cannot resist, especially if the one is me.
Jacob & Jordan Davis – They did a live IG story and it was SO GOOD. I’m so glad I caught it. I loved seeing my Jacob Davis Squad girls in the chat. And the boys sounded great. Such a treat!
Jack Whitehall & Jamie Redknapp – These two did a live IG story as well and the bits that I saw were great fun. I need to finish watching it because those two are a hoot.
Jack whilst on lockdown
Baseball was supposed to start this past weekend but of course, it did not. On Opening Day, I wrote the following poem:
the stadium is empty the air is still the sun shines bright the skies are clear
no churros no nachos no popcorn no hot dogs
the bleachers are empty the field untouched the concessions shuttered the dugouts deserted
no diamond no bats no gloves no bases
the parking lot is empty the ticket windows closed the game is postponed the start of the season unknown
