Welcome back to Tumblr's Poorest Wettest Saddest Littlest Meow Meow Competition! Before we announce the final verdict, let's see how our "lovely" contestants are doing backstage!

VRISKA SERKET, hailing from welcoming Homestuck, is in the blue corner! She's a TROLL, a TELEPATH, and a THIEF. She has also attained GODHOOD, and I'm informed she did nothing wrong! Just off the heels of a dramatic loss in the recent Tumblrwoman Election, she deeply resents being trapped in this narrative device!

Her attire today is plain by Earth standards, but well put-together by ALTERNIAN ones. Nevertheless, she has been known to dress up on occasion, particularly in the colors of her ANCESTOR, the Marquise Spinneret Mindfang!

She is extraordinarily determined, and extremely manipulative. She will do anything she can to make herself into the hero her story needs, consequences be damned. Her actions have made her the source of eternal, vitriolic discourse. Some believe her entirely justified, some believe her a heartless villain, and others believe everything in between; every one steadfast and passionate about their specific stance! Love her or hate her: VRISKA!!!!!!!!

HARRIER DU BOIS, also known as HARRY, sometimes referring to himself as RAPHAEL AMBROSIUS COSTEAU or THE REINCARNATION OF KRAS MAZOV, is here representing scenic Disco Elysium! He is a DETECTIVE, an ALCOHOLIC, a recent AMNESIAC, and a WASTE of ENERGY. Having just recently recovered from an attempt at drinking himself to death, we thought inviting him to compete might raise his spirits some! Unfortunately he does not seem to be totally aware of his surroundings, as he has already tried to touch himself twice on air!

His garish and mismatched clothes are STAINED with seemingly every substance a human body can produce. His face is locked in an EXPRESSION that can only induce disgust and discomfort in those who view it.

The few memories he can draw from his fractured mind paint him as violent, selfish, cruel, and pitiful. He has been trying to get over a breakup for six years, and has only partially succeeded through near-total retrograde amnesia. Worst of all, he's still somehow a decently successful cop. He has no friends and few allies on Revachol, with perhaps the sole exception of the impossibly patient and composed Lt. Kim Katsuragi. Even among his fans, you'd be hard pressed to find one who'd defend him, and ever harder pressed to find one willing to stand in the same room as him. Nevertheless, from the safe distance of fiction, let's hear it for HARRY!

OK so I have this problem that I've tried googling in the past and so far it has not turned up any results that I think match the problem. so here's my attempt at describing it is in case any of you recognize this at all. also i'm sorry if this is worded/explained really badly bc i just wrote it all out in one go

so about once a year I will have this problem where I'll wake up in the middle of the night, half asleep, and

1) I have these weird involuntary thoughts(?) where I have one specific thought or one specific series of thoughts that loop around my head really quickly, quicker than normal thoughts, and it's really repetitive and i keep thinking them over and over. it's not racing thoughts (even though I think racing is a very applicable adjective) because they aren't thoughts about something that makes me anxious, the topic is completely random. for example, the first time this happened, my brain was trying to list all of the trolls in homestuck in order(idk), but it wasn't actually the correct order or the correct names, it was more like a completely incoherent jumble (bc I was half asleep) it's like my brain was trying to list all these names and it was just completely incoherent and I couldn't stop it. It was really uncomfortable, almost to the point of being physically unbearable

2) along with this and I'll also get this uncontrollable feeling in my legs that I have to move them (I think that this is restless legs because I will sometimes have that on on its own, but this specific time it's these two issues together (the involuntary thoughts and the restless legs))

Another time this happened I was thinking about splitting wood over and over very quickly and picturing it happening without being able to stop and with the urge to kick my legs. Again, it somehow feels quicker than normal thoughts. At the time I just wanted it to stop (both because of the physical/mental discomfort and bc i just wanted to sleep). if I got up from bed and woke myself up properly, like getting a drink of water, this would stop temporarily and resume once i got back into bed as I start to fall asleep again. so this only happens when I'm half asleep.

this might sound a lot like OCD, but I REALLY don't think it's OCD because I don't have any other symptoms related to OCD and it only happens about once a year when i'm half asleep. it's almost like i'm in a weird uncontrollable half-dream state. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT THIS IS i'm so curious

hi. i just read the last chapter of your fic went blind last year and HOLY FUCK it is so good. i get it if you don’t want to like spoil things about your fic but i have many many questions and thoughts so im just gonna write a bunch of them.

the whole thing with like. dirk tapping into ultimate dirk and part of canon and then being shoved out? and then kind of realizing that he is a small part of something very big and wanting to be a bigger part of it, and then getting orange eyes representing a stronger connection to dirk-ness? fascinating. and is daves eyes turning red then symbolic of him becoming closer to dave-ness? and speaking of that- dante??? great character, very interesting. is he like somehow a version of dave? and what was he talking about on the swings? is he also in some sort of a loop? and what was it that dirk did at the end of chapter four? he did something with the sword, right, did he make dante decapitate him and then somehow come back to life?

and hal. and cal! holy shit, i can’t believe it but you kind of made me LIKE cal somehow? in the sense that he can be violent and outrageous and insane and vengeful when dirk can’t and its kind of cathartic.

its interesting to see where things stay the same as in canon and where they dont. like dave has chat logs with rose in 2014 and 2015? but hes only fourteen. so he’s technically both older and younger than he is at the beginning of homestuck. and dirk was like 13 in 1997, which is about when daves meteor should have dropped? but did they come with the meteors at all, in this world? dirk came with lil cal on his meteor in canon, but here he got him when he was 12. but dave still seems to be somewhat in touch with his time powers, and dirk with his heart powers, so some things carried over from the game?

god. this is all so fascinating and good. i will be probably rereading the fic and eating drywall until a new chapter comes out. you are an amazing writer.

wahhh thank you very much! for what it's worth i too have been thinking a lot about went blind last year. glances at the +50k word txt document of story notes and wip chapters. so i do love getting to talk about it even if working on it is very slow at the moment! i will put this under a readmore cos i got carried away but

there's a lot of things i don't want to spoil yet yes... but i think i've laid enough of the groundwork that these things won't feel terribly out of place within the story.

one thing i do feel comfortable in divulging is that any connections to canon are deliberately tenuous... how far can a character diverge from canon while still being understood as fitting the mold for that character? when a character is deliberately obscured, how much does fanon interpretation impact what feels in-character?

when you read fanfiction or fancomics or whatever kind of work about a specific character, your mind creates a superposition of the character as they exist in the original work and the character as they exist in the fanwork. as long as the "shape" of the character in the fanwork doesn't stick out too much from your perception of the canon "shape", you can accept that character--as written by someone else--as the same as in canon. some of the choices i have made are deliberately contradictory to the text of homestuck the webcomic. i have made these choices in order to tell the story i want to tell. even so, the basis for the characters in wbly are understood to be the same as in homestuck, creating an expectation for what these characters will act like, what their baseline is, and how you as a reader approach them. your feelings about cal changing within the context of wbly is an interesting case of this in my mind--the cal within wbly is presumably still close enough to canon that you can call it the same character, but the role of cal is changed enough that your impression of him is changed. that kind of thing is FASCINATING to me.

the reason wbly would not work as an independent work is the same as why the homestuck epilogues do not work without the pre-existing fandom of homestuck: there need to be expectations for these characters and relationships in order for me to challenge those expectations.

another thing i will divulge is that went blind last year is not the full title of the story in my mind--i won't tell the full one, but it does tie into just about every conflict in the story.

Homestuck: Beyond Canon Upd8 for 2/10/24

We got our news post a little late and our upd8 a little early. I'm struggling today and behind on progress for everything, but I still want to read.

James is being a bit hammy, but he's teasing some good news. It looks like we'll be getting [S] pages in the future. Hopefully with more than one person and a slower upd8 schedule, they won't ever need to pause for them.

Kinda curious about the VTuber mentioned. I like watching people experiencing Homestuck stuff! It's the whole reason I started live blogging.

Now onto the upd8!

Looks like I might have been right about Yiffy potentially having something to do with that ominous red glow. Let's see what's going on.

Like all teens, the worst thing that can happen to her is public parental affection. Though Jade is laying it on thick! Where's Rose with a quip about contacting CPS? Although she'd be calling them on herself.

Not sure how I feel about the gag, honestly. It's pretty cliché, and Tavvy is right there. We don't know how badly Yiffy has suffered, but like Tavvy it's been real abuse and neglect. This comic does have a habit of trying to make child abuse a joke, though.

Kanaya is obviously still struggling, and I can't blame her. Yiffy is one of the most controversial aspects of this comic, supposedly handed down to us from on high by AH himself. One of the great complaints about the Epilogues is that it takes the characters in directions that were intended to challenge fans. But even then, the idea that even a Candy Rose would cheat with Jade to have a secret love child and hide it from her all this time is so fucking out there. Everything about it feels wrong.

And then, of course, they get into a silly dare and name her Yiffany Longstocking Lalonde Harley!

But I'm not saying things that haven't already been said a million times. It's always felt like one of AH's epic troll moments, like the ones I both love and hate in the original work. And I hoping it will eventually pay off to something.

Looking at the text here, Yiffy's color could definitely be the red. Hah! Pepis.

Yiffy's mind is also on Kanaya it seems. We're also getting a sense of her attitude much more clearly now. I'm kinda getting Susie vibes.

Oh wow! They're actually calling it "The Yiffy Reveal" in universe!

Wow! Wow! Fucking wow!

The fuck!

I think my jaw just splintered the floor at my feet!

Rose used her power. She actually used her fucking power! And not only does she believe this will all be fortuitous (it's practically fated since it gives us a set of four kids), but that fortune would dictate Kanaya's eventual forgiveness.

She didn't just decide on, "Easier to get forgiveness than permission." She believed it inevitable, so that made it okay!

The fuck!

We're digging a little into Jade's adult life now. And yeah, it's just as bad as we probably imagined it was. Doesn't justify them going behind Kanaya's back, but you can understand her yearning.

That . . . that oddly makes sense. It still seems wrong, but it's the kind of backward logic that might occur on Candy Earth C. I don't know if AH had this explanation as part of Yiffy's backstory, or if it's writing we can attribute to one team or the other. But it's an actual explanation for how we got here.

Still not enough to pay off the trolling yet.

How . . . Tavvy, what were you doing?

Yeah, no. I'm betting right now Kanaya is feeling a lot more forgiving towards Jade and a lot less forgiving towards Rose.

That's Meenah's symbol, so we know who to expect a call from next time at least.

Of course a lot of attention is payed to the captchalogued corpse in Jade's possession. Did she find Dave's body and is still not dealing with it? Has she considered her taxidermy tradition dealing with it enough? Is this somehow another corpse considered fitting for the Harley traditions?

I would like to take a moment to acknowledge how fucking hilarious it is that people will decide and then assert that I’m white whenever I point out that there is racism in Homestuck. Especially the Anti-Blackness.

I would also like to point out that it is kind of disgusting to assume that scrutinizing the writings of a white author who is known to have been racist both before and during the writing of a particular body of work is somehow indicative of whiteness on behalf of the analyst.

It is frankly horrendous, considering this fandoms long, sordid history of silencing critical Black voices within its community. A big reason a lot of Black creators + analysts aren’t saying anything about the racial aspects of anymore is because so many other Black people got brutally harassed off their platform if they dared to breathe even one criticism in the direction of Their Lord And Savior, Andrew Hussie. People still get sent torrents of hate and threats if they speak their mind, especially if they approach it with any level of emotion… Even though Anti-Blackness would be something that affects them directly.

Which is… Both tragic and unsurprising. Black people are hardly ever afforded the right to their emotions when speaking about the racism that affects them every day. They’re often not allowed to be passionate, not allowed to get heated. They have to be calm, professional, and, most of all, palatable. Non-threatening. Words can’t express how much this sucks.

Here’s the thing. I know if I was an openly Black creator, I’d be getting a lot more shit for saying the things I do. People will reject what I’m saying based on the false assumption that I’m white, sure… But I can’t help but think that there’s also a lot of people who are only accepting what I’m saying… based on that same false assumption that I’m white. When people see criticism of Anti-Blackness in media by someone who is openly Black, they take that as them painting a target on their back. Racist people take Black people speaking their mind as an opportunity to pull the trigger on a gun that they were already aiming.

There’s absolutely plenty of normal people in between, but I’ve been in this community long enough- hell, I’ve been on the internet in general long enough. People just fucking hate listening to Black people about their concerns.

So I can’t help but think there’s some kind of… Ulterior motive to dismissing my criticism with the assumption that I’m white. I don’t have my race in my bio, so I haven’t painted the appropriate target on my back. If I haven’t said I’m Black- someone easy to harass into silence- then I must be white- something easy to label as ignorant to the struggles of any and all People of Color. I am neither white nor Black. You guys need to realize that other races exist.

And you need to stop being so fucking protective of a racist white guy that you don’t even know.

Seriously, just how often do people have to point out the sheer volume of times this guy has said the whole ass N-word and utilized Black caricatures in his work for people to accept that maybe Hussie was just actually racist, and that this has a tangible impact on what he writes?

Fucking hell, this isn’t rocket science, people.

omg yes that makes me so happy i’ll have to write more .. writing dave in particular is so fun

what jade meant by clicky chest noise was a certain noise crows make. crows do a lot more noises than just an abrasive “CAW” which probably wouldnt be nice to have right into your ear.

ive heard it called a rattle, a comb call (which i guess is because it sounds kind of like dragging your finger along a hair comb).. also chitters. and since davesprite doesnt have a beak the clicking noises would have to come from inside somehow. but i can make click sound in my throat with my mouth closed so maybe its something similar

scientists arent really sure exactly what the call means but crow enthusiasts who make friends with them in their yards say it’s a friendly, content, and intimate sound. this is a pretty apt description:

This rattling noise is an intimate sound crows make to the closest members of their family. It's an intimate, familiar, friendly rattle I don't hear very often but when I do, I count myself lucky. I've heard mated pairs making this sound to one another, especially in the springtime. Sometimes, I hear a lonely crow rattling to itself, almost as a self-soothing reflex or perhaps longing for a mate. Once, when its parents left to find food, I heard a baby crow try to cajole them back by rattling at them from the top of a tree. When crows are playing together, I've heard them rattle at one another and it sounds like they're sharing a friendly little joke.

anon i'm taking this as an opportunity to talk about my stardew valley au i hope you're satisfied.

i view this au from the lens of it being an actual mod for the game, cus idk how to code or make mods. but anyway it would be an expansion type mod similar to rsv where there's a whole other town to visit that for the most part is separate from the vanilla game . and here we have homestuck characters to meet.

the trolls are human in this au (except kanaya who is a vampire) and while theoretially you could romance them there's more of an emphasis on helping them with their own issues and relationships with others.

i am grabbing your hand so gently i am looking you in the eye and i am saying this to you directly. i'm not sorry i made this into interstitial homestuck AU but i probably should be. oh well!

"I don't get it though," Shigeo says, looking out at the belt of rocks littering the incipisphere. "There were asteroids though. I was breaking them with my uh, with my powers. Or as many as I could anyway."

"I only saw one," Al says, frowning as he looks out over the scene. "It only showed up after my brother took the house and vanished."

Audrey frowns, her eyes looking off into the distance the way they do when she's working on a puzzle. "...I saw them too. Trish?"

"I wasn't really. 'Looking' at that point."

" ...Your house vanished, Al?"

"Yeah! It just left a massive crater in the ground which was, you know-"

"Oh my house did that too," Mob chirps, looking around.

"- I'm guessing the barn did the same after I entered," Al carries on.

"Did...You said your little brother was also playing a game that day, right Shigeo?"

"Him and a bunch of his friends from the Awakening Lab. I guess, uh. I hadn't really thought about what they were playing since then, but I think they might be playing the game too"

Trish takes the moment to mouth [LAB?] at Al over Shigeo's head, who just answers her with a shrug and a shake of his head. Sometimes Shigeo says stuff that's just concerning, and that's coming from her.

The four of them keep looking out at the asteroids, none of which are going to go anywhere. They've all been getting little bits and pieces of prophecy from their lands and consorts, but Audrey's the one who's been collecting them off the others and collating everything. Once the Black King defeats the White King, he's meant to usher in some kind of Reckoning which would throw all of these at Skaia which would respond by throwing them all somewhere else. That somewhere else was meant to be their homes. There's a lot of destiny and predetermination tied up in it all. With Skaia and the eternal war in its current state, though...

Trish closes her eyes and sinks herself deep inside herself, opening her eyes to survey the scene again.

"These comets," Trish says, "They're not moving. They cannot 'move'. These comets...They aren't the ones we all 'saw' before. Those 'shooting stars' must be from 'somewhere else'."

"Noah and Emma were up to something that day, but I didn't think about it," Audrey says quietly. "If - if they're playing too, then..."

"Then it's a good thing," Mob says quietly. "If we all saw asteroids coming out of the sky, and those were meant to be these asteroids, then - then that means all of them must've had a game that could get far enough for that whole thing to start, right? So that, uh. That means their games must be working right because there was something to send back in the first place. They got far enough to trigger that, that whole situation."

That doesn't mean they'll survive it, Trish keeps to herself.

The thing about breeding universes is that the Game only needs to spit out one or two viable ones per universe to keep multiplying, and there are so many planets in even one galaxy that it's practically 'uncountable'. There's no guarantee any one of their worlds would've managed it, even if the four of them weren't somehow locked in this weird hybrid session together.

"We should fucking loot them," Trish does say. "I want to see what we can make from asteroid pieces."

also someone tried to ask me for the url on twitter before i decided to use it for my side account (back before i deactivated my old twitter) and i just... ignored their DM lmfao 🧍‍♂️ i was kinda put off bc i always had DMs closed and they somehow figured out the like... two days window i kept them open for an art raffle and i was like okay that's kinda weird tho

pete:

he gets cast by the fandom as being the sweet innocent one because he's paired with a guy like Vegas and was the comedic relief character for a while. like gosh the problem with hooking up with Vegas wasn't because Vegas was a bad person, but because Vegas is a very powerful person on the opposite side of the mafia war and Pete is just a bodyguard. he doesn't even believe in people being heroes or villains! he gets his dick electrocuted by Vegas while being tortured and laughs! he spits in Vegas' face when Vegas tries to degrade him and force him to eat! the problem isn't that Vegas kills a lot of people, it's that he's not killing them on behalf of Pete's boss! and Pete is into all of Vegas' fucked up shit! when he's doing the little sobbing in the noodles the scene and thinking about Vegas, he includes the times Vegas choked him, something that he only did when he was torturing/hurting Pete!

people keep acting like Pete is going to somehow reign in and tame Vegas meanwhile Vegas is like "you like it when I suddenly switch to being evil" and Pete does nothing to refute that except give him a half-hearted "you're a psycho" while melting into his tough and initiating their first proper kiss. like babes where is this idea of Pete somehow being a soft boy who got roped into Vegas's shit and is going to domesticate him come from???? the whole appeal of Vegas to Pete is that he doesn't have to hide himself under false pretenses and let himself be as much of a monster that he is as well. he also beats the shit out of Vegas till his mouth is full of blood so there's that too

JANE CROCKER (HOMESTUCK)

1.) Pretty cool character in the comic proper, the alpha kid’s whole thing is just taking a break from the cool plot to have a teenage drama break but she has some quite interesting moments and a personality. Then in Homestuck 2 and the Epilogues she out of nowhere becomes an actual fascist girlboss(/neg) who abuses her gay husband (cause she can’t handle that he isn’t into her despite getting over that already) and puts shock collars w/leashes on her niece who she keeps in a cage and gives dog food. She also suddenly gets super xenophobic towards trolls (despite being very good friends with Calliope who is an alien). All of this to make her an actual fascist dictator. They couldn’t think of a more interesting way to make a follow up story to the most convoluted and lore dense piece of media this side of the afton criticality other than giving one of the less popular a fascism bomb and going “oh shit they’re gonna do the bad and racisms (but it’s against aliens so it’s smart commentary)”

2.) its clear shes supposed to be an inversion of the typical american housewife but she got so caught up in the bullshit going on in act 6 and some stupid romantic drama with her sort-of brother (she didnt know at the time) that any character development was completely sidelined and thus she just stayed at "housewife" without any inversion or character development which just looped back around to being misogynistic

3.) Caliborn (other character in Homestuck) called her an "IDIOT WOMAN." and "STUPID EARTH COW." and a "DUMB BITCH." :(

JADE (DRAGON QUEST 11) (CW: Mind Control)

1.) Despite being a calm and collected big sister protector to the party as well as a warrior princess, Dragon Quest is basically required to have one sexy female party member and with the other two being a girl who looks like a child and the other basically being a nun that left Jade, so despite it not being in her character at all she gets attacks that make her attack enemies with her butt and get the classic bunny girl costume. The worst of it is that there's a timeskip in the game and a lot of the party members get a little side adventure during it to flesh them out more, well instead of that Jade just get's captured by a monster and brainwashed into being a sexy demon for him, and said demon form/her vamp form is just get in the bunny girl outfit but with paler skin and red eyes. And once she's rescued she can go back into that form somehow and get's access to all the charm skills because 'of course'

2.) She's a cool martial artist but she also has skills like Blow kiss and sexy beam that do not fit the no-nonsense fighter she's introduced as. I haven't even finished the game yet but there's a sidestory where you get to walk around as her but a monster puts her in a cursed sexy bunny costume and you can't change her out of it even though the game has a system for cosmetic changes and doesn't restrict it anywhere else so far, also the monster's wife blames her for trying to 'seduce' her husband the monster, the same monster that put her in a bunny costume and keeps being creepy and flirting with her and also captured her and enslaved her. She fights back and beats them both but Booga activates the curse on the bunny suit, and makes her faint. I haven't gotten to the point where she comes back to the party yet.

You know, seeing Jake and Jane here again, makes me wonder what happened to Rose, Jade, Kanaya, Yiffy and Tavros. I mean, last time we saw them they were in a confrontation with Jane at the church.

I mean, yeah of course it's different writers now and all, but I'm curious to hear what their explanation is for how it ended. Did the rebels simply manage to abscond?

Anyway, it's really cool to see Jake more actively rebelling against Jane.

And finally we get to see what Meenah looks like now!! We only got a very limited tease before, in the scene of her with Karkat, before we got to see Karkat in full during his conversation with John.

It's interesting how much she looks like the Condesce, just like how Karkat looked a lot like the Sufferer.

All. Those. Fish puns. Hahahaha

It took me a while to get the Pierce Brosnan - Mamma Mia reference even though I did see the movie (and its sequel) a couple of years ago.

This whole scene reminded me of the Dreambubble gathering which also included Meenah, Jake, (sleeping) Roxy and Brain Ghost Dirk. Which I believe is also pretty much the only prior interaction we've had between Jake and Meenah?

Speaking of being reminded of things, Meenah warning Roxy about Jane and Roxy thinking Jane can't be that far gone, kind of reminds me of the old days where Roxy tried to warn Jane about how Betty Crocker (AKA Meenah's grown-up version) was not as harmless as she seemed and Jane not wanting to believe it. How things have changed since then…

It kind of makes me sad how Jake still has Dirk in his Pesterchum contacts, even though his Dirk's been dead for many years and isn't coming back. Did Jake keep him as a contact just to remember him, or did Jake really hope that some day he'd see Dirk online again and it turned out he was still somehow alive after all?

I suppose that in a way he did get that after all, what with Brain Ghost Dirk having entered his life again, haha.

This also shows how much Jake cares about John, with John being his only non-B2 Kid contact in this list. Jake's narration of Jane putting "his son" in danger was probably referring to Tavros, but I suppose you could say it also counts for John!

About the Vriska scene

MAN, a SBAHJ reference!!! That has been SUCH a long time.

I love how the "BIMP" can still be seen on the vent when John's talking to Vriska. And the "Thanks for Playing" still being on the sun made me laugh.

Vriska correcting John when he said "leafs" reminds me of those old gags where people corrected one another even though they were actually speaking out loud to each other, haha. Never gets old.

What with how Vriska feels she's stuck with a "fake" John reminds me of her alternate (dead) self being stuck with the Doomed John who was killed by Typheus.

oh my god dude. sorry i'm gonna have a homestuck interlude to classpect qpac and his role in the narrative because i'm thinking about him

he's. SO Page of Hope coded. he's so page of hope fr. his class being a Page makes so much sense because throughout homestuck, every single Page are all people pleasers. they're walking doormats who rarely stand up for themselves. they feel like they can't do anything right, so they sit down and shut up half the time so they don't do anything wrong. and his aspect being Hope makes so much sense because like. Hope is about optimism and doing right for right's sake and helping those who are down. he holds optimism as his greatest shield even when things are crumbling around him. it's so important to him!!!!

but also being a Page means that he lacks his aspect in a way, and his journey will be long and arduous before he can see the fruits of his labour, and when his efforts pay off, MAN it will pay off. there are so many times when he has just seemed to have completely given up hope. he's been broken down again and again and again and you can see the peak of that during the risus pills arc, when he was so out of it he was actively suicidal. but somehow he keeps bouncing back!!! he found the cure anyway, he left it for Cellbit, the guy he's terrified of, and he saved himself and Forever. he will step between something that scares him and something he wants to protect even as he cries and shakes and sniffles the whole time.

the thing about Pages is that it takes a long time for them to reach their full potential, and there will be so many bumps in the road before he even comes close. but when a Page finds that potential, they can be one of the most helpful, powerful, and dangerous members of their session. Pac is an extremely useful member of the server, he's extremely skilled, he just doesn't see it, and he can't reach his full potential as a Page until he can recognize his own accomplishments. the only problem is that when Pages reach their full potential, they have a tendency of dying right away. when Jake faces Aranea in Game Over, when Tavros stands up to Vriska, they both die almost immediately.

Pac and Jake "yes and" everything because they don't want to be a burden, and Pac and Tavros don't know how to face the people who traumatized them. the inaction of Jake and Tavros is what ultimately leads to their deaths at the hands of the Light players who hurt and manipulated them. (coincidentally, i also see Cellbit as a Light player, a Prince or Bard of Light, but that's for another post!!!) Tavros didn't stand up to Vriska sooner, Jake couldn't say no to Aranea, and Pac folds as soon as Cellbit, one of his greatest fears, is in front of him with a knife.

Tavros and Jake forgive people who hurt them no matter what they've done. Pac has faced his own Light Player and died multiple times at his hands in both Purgatories, and now after a brief interrupted apology, they're supposedly just fine. Cellbit doesn't mean to be, but he is Pac's own personal Serket.

the difference with Pac though is that he is like if Jake or Tavros got a well-rounded continuation to their character arcs. his story isn't done!! it's still going!! he's getting there!!! he's getting more confident, he has support from the people around him, and i think eventually he can break this doomed-by-the-narrative cycle that fully fledged Pages seem to have.

yeah! so these wont be in order of what i like the most, they're just going to be here in whatever order I think of them. i'm also trying to go with what I think are more lesser-known ones, and if one is more popular it'll because I think it's one people write off that are actually good. as i'm writing this i'm going back up to say the descriptions for these will become less detailed because i got tired and cant keep repeating the art!! the atmosphere!!

Scarlet Hollow: A heavily choice-based horror mystery visual novel about going back to Scarlet Hollow- a small town in south historically ran by your family- for the funeral of your late aunt. its episodic and there are currently only 4 of the 7 episodes out. even with just them it is my favorite game. I love the writing and the art and the whole atmosphere of the game AND the soundtrack brought Brandon Boone (the composer) into my top 5 artists in my spotify wrapped last year

Slay the Princess: Another choice-based horror visual novel (and dating sim!) by the creators of Scarlet Hollow where you are tasked with, well, slaying the princess to prevent the destruction of the entire world. It's only a demo right now-releasing q3 of this year- but I'm excited for the whole game! my selling point for it with my followers is that the narrator (and some other characters) are voiced by Jonny Sims and hey podcast fans you like him check out this game

Endacopia: A click and point horror game inspired by Humongous Entertainment games such as Pajama Sam. Currently also a demo and set to release in October of 2024, I can not emphasize enough how excited I am for it. The game's style is so fun and there's lots of little details and the music??? There's two musical numbers in the demo alone. Some of the style and writing also reminds me of Undertale and even Homestuck somewhat (I say as someone who hasn't read homestuck)

FAITH: The Unholy Trinity: This is an 8-bit style horror game inspired by the 1980s Satanic Scare coming in 3 chapters with multiple endings, a very good example of games not needing high-end realistic graphics to be scary

Doki Doki Literature Club: Glances at my icon. who could've seen this one coming. I feel like most people know about ddlc by now, even if they don't know anything past "horror anime dating sim". It starts off for a long while a seemingly normal, if bland, visual novel dating sim until-seemingly suddenly- twisting into psychological horror. There's, however, a lot of foreshadowing once you see the beginning again after knowing what will happen. Honestly I think this games brilliant and its such a shame it somehow got lumped in with "cringe" mascot horror (its not even a mascot horror game?). For me a lot of the horror comes from the amount of scares left up to a random percentage- and how subtle a lot of them are. You can replay it and have a fairly different experience than you did the first time- and be scared by completely new things. There's also this existential and cosmic horror element that is less one you experience while playing it, i think, and more thinking about it afterwards. This isn't even touching on a lot of the secrets and easter eggs. a few years after the original game came out, Doki Doki Literature Club Plus was released, and it leaves the og game experience essentially untouched while adding a new vn experience the length of the og game (thats seemingly horror-less) as well as some more lore to the world, not of the game, but around the game, and builds more on the existential/cosmic horror. Needless to say from the length of this, I adore this game. also take the content warnings seriously, in the (free) og the game opens with warnings and a link to a page with specific tws, and in ddlc+ you are given the options to see those warnings listed before starting the game, as well as the ability to turn on tw pop-ups before game events

Home Safety Hotline: Also currently a demo, a horror game where you work for a home safety hotline, answering calls to help people deal with pests and other household problems. as the game progresses you get some more... off-putting calls and access to more unusual problems. I love games that put you into the role of someone who works a mundane job dealing with horrifying shit (similar reasoning to why I like the I'm On Observation Duty games, which I think are more popular rn than I want to put on this list)

NiGHT SIGNAL: By the same creator of Home Safety Hotline, this one's a short one about getting a new tv set and finding some strange channels during the night, inspired by The Twilight Zone and a 1995 game, The Dark Eye. A lot of the art in the game is done with clay which creates this really nice uncanny look and atmosphere- details about which you can see in an artbook you unlock after playing the game, which is REALLY cool I adore seeing the creativity behind and what goes into games like these.

and there's a bunch more I like, these are just the ones off the top of my head and I also dont feel like typing a bunch more dfnafnsk I'll also say if yall haves one you really like that I havent mentioned feel free to send an ask talking about them
