How is John holding up?

He's not.

Refusing to believe it, refusing to stop looking. He would've refused the service as well, but he needs to keep at this as long as he can, and maybe the kidnappers will show up. Maybe he'll find some clue or bit of evidence not considered before. It's only been a week and he knows Masa is strong.

Another week, they'll laugh and call it vacation if when he gets back. Chuckle and joke that it was all staged for a vacation.

Another week. A Long vacation.

A month. He had a long day, maybe he just didn't feel like checking in. Got tired of John and his antics, decided he didn't like coffee and couldn't face him to see it.

A month-- two months. Business as usual. Wake up at his desk. Ring Masa's phone. Not even the dial tone anymore, service cut off. Skip lunch, there might be a clue he could find, a tip he could miss on the hotlines. The precinct had a shower, but there's no time. Not until later. Lunch break. Freshen up, ask around again.

Three. Using his Rocket ties to get into places he's not supposed to be.

Four. Visit the grave. There's no body, there never will be. But just to be sure. Masa would leave him a clue here to find him. He knows his brother wouldn't leave him like this. Not willingly.

Five. He's irritated Masa didn't think to bring him to the bahamas with him. The alcohol there is so strong you might even forget your name. It's probably happened a lot to Masa by now. Retirement must be nice.

Six. Clock out, leave the precinct for the first time that week. Greet the guard in Masa's apartment building. Drop off the rent check for that month at the front office. Open the door, not even sitting down. It's a crime scene. Everything covered in clear plastic sheets, and even then a layer of dust.

A year.
