#salty talks#this one is personal but not in a scary just in a i need to say this shit somewhere way#botw/totk… i do not fucking like th. like gameplay is fun puzzles are cool world is cool but like.#the lackluster story and characters honest to god drag it the fuck down for me#none of the characters are actuslly interesting and ganondorf is the only one i want to see in totk#like i got the master sword. i got it and its like whatever. i know whats up with the light dragon and i dont care#totk is making me start to dislike this version of zelda and idk how to feel abt that#no one feels like. interesting. everyone is either good or evil or a fucking side character with a paper thin life#and totk with its fucking no-nuance go kill ganondorf plot is just. stop making half of the plot take place in the fucking past#i havent really done much story stuff but like. GOD. no one in totk is meant to be morally gray its all so fucking black and white#what happened to having major characters who were morally dubious and were actually fascinating to watch#i dont like that most of the major characters in totk/botw are Good Guys and Nice To Link nobody actually interests me#i was SO excited that the lurelin pirates would be a new group of characters to contend with but no. monsters. fuck#they had a chance to maybe get into the kingdoms more dubious past concerning the sheikah and then made the sheikah barely important#and then made the yiga more of a joke instead of like. doing anything with their interesting past#no fuck you heres some all new shit that has nothing to do with what came before and the same shallow conflict and characters#theyve dipped their toes into morally dubious characters and genuinely fascinating characters and the idea that the kingdom of hyrule isnt#all that and gave more room for drawing your own conclusions and totk just hands over the most black and white experience#im playing to finish the story and finish the game i actively do not care or expect much from these characters#and it just seems like the narrative is going to bend over backwards to put hyrule as the ultimate moral good and any opposition as bad#and all but force you to accept that because it just proves that sentiment correct over and over again and its fucking bland#idk. aomething about the writing of this game fucking frustrates me esp when i think abt how past games were written#imperialist shit aside this game’s story and characters are so fucking. par for the course bland. i dont care beyond ‘oh thata charming’#i dont think about this game’s story. it doesnt make me think it just shoves events and character actions at me and moves on#fuck.#it feels like its just. telling me shit. not giving me much room to really decide for myself. zelda is good ganondorf is bad fuck nuance ig#it seems so fucking scared of being a little bit complex. this is why i say 'i miss linebeck' i miss complicated ideas and characters#just. totk seems like it REALLY wants you to have specific thoughts about these events and characters. doing everything it can to prove#the good guys right and the bad guys wrong and having pretty much no one be in between or like. anything. its all standard

wondering how many zelda games take place in a version of hyrule in an age of decline
-OoT: hyrule had a huge civil war approx. 10 years before the game starts, which is what kills link’s parents -Wind Waker: king daphnes asked the gods to do an apocalypse, whoops -Twilight Princess: the entire kingdom is strewn with abandoned crumbling ruins. their infrastructure is just FUCKED. -Skyward Sword: war between hylia and demise was essentially a “scorched earth” scenario, whoops -BotW: this game is literally post apocalyptic

it's been only like. Half a week since I beat Jedi survivor but I can't stop thinking about that ending holy shit. I was not expecting it to be so somber, especially when compared to the rest of the game. fallen order was a good game but survivor improves on it in almost if not every aspect.
#there will bw spoilers in the followinf tags. just a warning bc if you think youre going to play the game but havent yet. dont read#jedi survivor spoilers#that ending mission knocked me out. just the tension in the air after killijg dagen is. ough. like you can just feel somethings off.#at first i was extremely pissed they brought vader back and revealed bode was a former jedi but by the end i came back around to it#bv they did it really well!! and holy shit im so excited to see where cal goes as a character. im praying that he goes full darkside#but then he becomes a grey jedi. also the next game needs to make kata Force-sensitive. i can already see hwr being a main character.#like!!! the potential of her mentor being cal!! the guy who literally killed her dad in front of her!#the third game should be all about the struggles with the dark side that cal and kata fave#face. like cal is already on that slippery slope but kata is also going to have to face that when she grows up#ofc this is me assuming shes Force-sensitive. i think it makes the most sense with her character.#like going forward#honestly maybe even make her the protag of the third game#and god. i cant get over bode. what a great antagonist.#like having the protag main antagonist and twist antagonist all be reflections of each others obsessiveness and destructiveness.... mwah#like all these guys are so fucked up and awful in different ways. and the best part is that in another game bode wouldve been the protag!!#but yeah besides the um. performance issues (which i didnt really have any of thankfully) what a great game.#genuinely a contender for goty for me. we'll see how zelda is but rn its a toss up between re4 make and survivor.

I just had a dream were perry the platypus found out about their father and went out on a journey to visit him. Their father was a naked, light skin colored platypus PIRATE CAPTAIN that was able to glow in holy golden light and also fly because it made a deal with a creepy demon-zombie DUCK that looked like it was taken straight out of a horror movie. ... And was also the mother of Perry...??
Both were super happy to see each other for the first time and the father wished for Perry to join his crew of animal-pirates.
Then they all took a selfie.

how do u play zelda games... or are u just very familiar w the lore without having played all of them? i only have a switch and have played botw and totk it's the only console i've ever had and i'd like to play more games like ocarina of time and wind waker and majoras mask but idk how to access them and also. expensive 😭
i've played every game I talk about on here! I try not to talk about ones i havent played bc i don't have a full understanding of them lol. for me it's been about 10 years since I started playing zelda games so I've had some time to get this many under my belt but I can definitely recommend some good games & methods for new players!
since you said you only have a switch, i'll start with legal ways to get older zelda games on the switch. many of these will be expensive and arent actually the method i recommend to play them but. for the sake of being thorough. im gonna mention them.
skyward sword HD remake (highly recommend!!) this game would probably be a pretty good starting point after botw and the remake is notably easier to play than the original. it is $60 tho when the original game was $30. so
NES and SNES virtual consoles which are free with a nintendo online subscription have the original zelda, zelda II, and a link to the past on them. as a new player i wouldnt SUPER recommend any of these but alttp is definitely worth it if you DO end up liking some of the more modern games in the series.
the dreaded n64 virtual console has oot on it but im just straight up gonna tell you not to buy that shit. oot is a must play but there are millions of better ways to play it
the fucking $60 links awakening remaster. don't buy this
the way I personally played most of my games is either via console or hacked console. if you're willing to invest in a secondhand wii to hack you can emulate basically any console that came before it, including the n64 for oot and the gamecube for wind waker. if you're willing to invest in OR you have an old 3ds lying around (preferably that hasnt been updated recently but you can get around that) you can hack it to play GB/GBA/DS/3DS games, which includes link's awakening, minish cap, albw, oot 3d, and majora's mask 3d!
if you're looking for a COMPLETELY free option, my next suggestion is emulation. you want a decent PC to be able to run most of this shit without speed drops, and some newer consoles won't run perfectly no matter what. wii games especially are really dicey because of their reliance on motion control so there's not a lot of emulators out there for them.
for anything before the N64 (majora & any game released before it) I recommend the MAME vintage game emulator. this thing was originally built for arcade games but runs a lot of vintage consoles pretty well too and is generally intuitive and user-friendly.
Visual Boy Advance is a good option for GBA games (link's awakening, 4 swords, minish cap, oracle games.) these may also work on MAME
Desmume for DS games (phantom hourgass, spirit tracks)
Citra for 3DS games (requires high processing speed & decent graphics card, most laptops will not run it) (oot & mm 3d, albw)
for gamecube (wind waker) I used dolphin emulator on my hacked wii so I can't vouch for how it'll run on anything else but i believe it should also be able to emulate wii games? (sksw, tp)
hope this helps fuel your loz adventures! if you ever have specific questions about emulation or hacking i might be able to help also lol i hate paying for games so i do this a lot

Which animation companies, are the best choices for, animated movies for
Kirby
Captain Falcon
Samus
Ness and Lucas
Fox and Falco
Olimar
Splatoon
Link & Zelda
Idk why but Pixar feels like it would do a good job with Kirby. With feel good movies like Up or Inside out, a wholesome yet HEARTWRENCHING story for a Kirby film would be in Pixar's hands (if you know the lore, then you understand)
I havent played any Falcon or Metroid games to know, but perhaps libe actions by Universal Studios would fit (cant guarantee a good film lol)
For the Mother games, Sony. No doubt.
Starfox is HARD....perhaps Warner Brothers...particularly whoever worked on Happy Feet and Guardians of Gahoole. Two gorgeous films btw. Perhaps Laika instead...A stop motion film in SPACE would be awesome to see.
Pikmin WOULD GO WONDERFULLY with Cartoon Saloon. Have you SEEN their films??? Pikmin would DEFINITELY fit their aesthetic!
SPLATOON OMG I CAN TOTALLY SEE DREAMWORKS OR ILLUMINATION DOING THAT. SPLATOON ESPECIALLY WOULD WORK IN ILLUMINATION'S SENSE OF HUMOUR. AAAA
As for the Zelda games. This is too obvious. Studio Ghibli or Studio Ponoc. No questions asked. After all, Princess Mononoke is probably the inspiration for Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

I really do firmly believe that botw is a better game than totk. I don't think it's the novelty aspect that some people claim it is either. I think that totk should be just as compelling considering it's the same world but expanded. And I've been wracking my brain trying to figure out why it's not. I haven't come to any conclusion yet, though other than 'it's too big', which isn't much of anything.
tbh my main problem with TOTK its how it deals with the lore and plot
its very weirdly written as a sequel of BOTW, as if they tried to sell it for people who havent played prequel but they didnt do any good job to make it well connected and intriguing for a new player who would be motivated to go play BOTW as well
and yeah, map is expanded but sky islands are just places for puzzles and shrines, not like... it has much pieces of lore or history tbh
underdark is pretty repetetive for me too, just some places was actually interesting to find and its all main plot related or with a forgotten god statues.. too many things left untold.
sure new game mechanics were cool, they expanded stuff with enemies so cheers to that
i was just also naive to think we would see more of the past where Zelda happened to be, with all this time magic... oh well.
Ganondorf was plain baddie with no well written motivation to be baddie, even though he was considered to be "hero of his people", Rauru and his sister are the only zonai for some reason (the hell happened), Sonia is pretty boring as a character bc didnt have much screentime etc etc
they added too much and didnt work out with it, i think, so thats why BOTW works better for me

For the TotK rewritten project: What would be the main tutorial area? I 100% agree canon caters way too much to people who didn´t play BotW before but having an isolated area to get a hold of the controls and systems at least in the tutorial feels pretty neccessary. Love all your work so far!
Hi! and thank you!!
been thinking about it alot and while i love how botws tutorial especially is kinda not overtly a tutorial and blends naturally into the gameplay, i think trying to do it again is a little forced, i guess it makes sense in canon totk but in my rewrite i think i might just directly make it a more typical tutorial
so you know after the intro when zelda gets link out of the caves and his arm is heavily damaged, they make their way to purah, who has a proper lab now, so she can save link by getting rid of his infected arm and replace it with the prototype shiekah prosthetic
since thats a big operation and thing to get used to i think its kinda logical if purah wants to test whether it functions at all, sicne it was an improvised quick solution to save link and keep him in a fighting condition so zelda, while able to defend herself now, isnt fully on her own
so, ill be honest, this is a part im kinda stuck at, bc slowly introducing abilities is a really good thing to do but i want it to feel natural, it did in botw but it kinda failed to feel as natural in totk imo
so im wondering if it would be better if you get a few abilities at the start, like two for example right away, but purah needs more parts to improve it, so you need to visit the hateno and maybe the akkala lab as well so fetch some parts that will get you the next ability once you get them to purah, an incentive to go to interesting locations too, getting you started with the yiga stuff in akkala and with the sagono (fashion lady) stuff in hateno
im also thinking about how to better integrate the sages abilities, bc i think in canon its very much not ideal to have 5 ghosties glitch all over the place while killing the frame rate making you yell at the screen bc you keep getting ahold of the wrong ones
im wonderign whether it would be better to integrate it into links arm abilities so you can choose which one to activate or at least to make it more natural feeling like the champion abilities in botw
this is a big thing to im trying to get to work out and havent yet gotten to it much but i will absolutely make a bigger post about it once i think of something, im taking ideas for it too if you got any!!

Rating How understanding I am if you dont ship Zelink on a per game basis
The Legend of Zelda: There really isnt any shipping options here, aside from Zelda. so 5/10
Link's Adventure: 6/10 The health shop girl be wild lol
Link to the past: 4/10 Link and Zelda are kind of adorable but I get it
Link's Awakening: 8/10 Zelda really isnt in this game and Marin and Link got a good thing going. Too bad its a dream
Ocarina of Time: 6/10 There are a lot of options for Link in this game, and while I still stand that Zelda is best girl here, I do understand the appeal of the others
Majora's mask: 9/10 You got 3 days and Zelda isnt even here, so I get it.
Oracle of Seasons/Ages: 8/10 Zelda isnt really in this one and there are other mortal goddesses to woo
Four Swords/Adventures: 5/10 There arent really that many options unless you read the manga
Wind Waker/Phantom Hourglass: 4/10 Tetra is best girl and she is Zelda. Yea there are options but Tetra is easy choice
Minish Cap: 7/10 Not really an options thing but just the way the game is.
Twilight Princess: 10/10 Midna was best girl in that game so I totally get why people didnt ship this iteration of Link with TP Zelda.
Spirit Tracks: 1/10. Anyone that DOESNT ship ST Zelink is not someone I could trust. Its not that I think you are a bad person, I just dont know if you have a soul. I will pray for you.
Skyward Sword: 2/10 So this is my favorite Zelink, but at least there is an option or two. Unless you ship Link with Groose, I refuse to accept the other answers to why you dont ship the most PERSONAL ZELINK
Link between worlds: 7/10. Lowrule zelda is cool, and also you got Lowrule Link. So there are some combos here that are interesting
Triforce heroes: Havent played it so I dont even bother.
Breath of the wild/Tears of the Kingdom: 7/10. While I am all for the Zelink. There are a LOT of options for Link and Zelda. Mipha is a precious bean and I wish she was still alive. That being said, I still love the Zelink

So TotK seems to be clicking where BotW wasn't. Any insight on what the key differences are that work for you?
note: i played botw up until the calamity ganon fight and then went "yeah ok ive played a zelda game before", put it down and never went back. didnt play the dlc
i dont think anyone would be surprised to know that im a "majoras mask was the best zelda" guy but the reason has little to do with the "darker tone" or the lore but because reusing assets allowed the dev team to greatly (GREATLY in this case holy shit) expand on the actual contents of the game itself. i love gold/silver best for the same reason.
botw is like running around an empty movie set. theres nothing in that fucking game. at the time, due to the proliferation of crafting mechanics infesting literally every AAA game, it felt like nintendo was more focused about hitting all the checks on a checklist of tired mechanics that were included just for the sake of saying they had it. crafting! weapon durability! open world! pbbbbt.
none of these things proved to be enjoyable to me. keeping in mind that ive been playing zeldas since the snes (skipping only a handful of handheld games), the changes felt like steps away from what makes zelda games unique. crafting felt like an arbitrary step between me and potions. i wanted to swing my master sword with power, not experiment with clumsy weapons that stop existing after i finally get a feel for them. and the open world, frankly sucked.
mm rewarded me for my curiosity. experimentation and exploration would lead to interesting or gratifying results (did you know theres a paper airplane in ikana canyon...). botw is like playing in the window xp background. theres barely any landmarks, except shrines, or anything to do outside of getting the yiga clan's ass. theyre easy to pick out because theyre literally the only people on the road. the world is put to waste; i cant play with it, i can just observe and be extremely artificially hindered by its vastness.
this doesnt really fit anywhere else in the above open world rant, but trading the shrines for small and sparce dungeons was a huge let down. i was hoping for a series of cohesive puzzles intended to help my mastery of my newest weapon or ability. you know. like a zelda game
totk fixed this and every other problem in the best way possible; the devs dumped a ton of toys into my playpen, gave me a hot glue gun, and told me to go buck wild. i love to build a horrible contraption to solve my stupid problems or kill me instantly. i love that experimenting with weapons involves actual experimentation if you desire or you can have an inventory exclusively full of spear type weapons with vastly different properties by gluing a bunch of rocks or monster parts to it. but most importantly....the "stock up->head out->explore->return" loop no longer feels like i have to go to the dmv over and over.
sure, the depths are artificially large in the way that the map in botw was; theres not a lot to do except reveal the map and do plot stuff. but the overworld was given a complete overhaul using the empty map as a starting point. theres actually stuff to look at, ruins to explore, caves to investigate, holes to jump into, and all that shit in the sky to explore. the sky map might be sparse but its meticulously crafted so that just the process of explorating the archipelagos feels like a puzzle you need to solve, as opposed to a hurdle you have to jump.
there is so much more to do in totk that im pretty sure im over 20 hours in and havent done any of the regional main quests. ive been running around picking up side quests, uncovering the map, exploring the depths, fucking around in the sky, and dying my clothes. but its not annoying or overwhelming. it feels more alive and less like a weird map in an abandoned gmod server. im having fun.
for crit: imo, one of the biggest criticisms i have for both these games is that the voice acting is horrendous. nintendo has too much money to be tapping people who sound like they just got out of the shenmue soundbooth. zelda was not improved by voice acting and they should probably go back to everyone just having short exclamations like "HEH HEEH!" or "hmmm...".
also link doesnt roll anymore and its really fucking me up. im really struggling here lol. i keep trying to do dark souls shit and every fight involves me accidentally zooming in with the sheikah slate instead of locking on, hitting l1 istead of shield, and whistling for my horse instead of drinking estus.
also nerf rain
