Last year I started this huge project of redrawing a bunch of my Self Inserts in my more plump body style, a few of which I posted sporadically as I made them. The plan was to full a whole page with all my old S/Is and then full color all of them and post them all together.
I recently picked that project back up and added a few more S/Is but.. The longer I look at my massive canvas the less motivated I am to color it and then the less motivated I am to do other art
So! Here's the clean sketches for all the ones who go together, the rest I'll be posting as before, just random bunches of unrelated S/Is, uncolored until someone asks about them.

Bread Baking For Beginners: Tips and Tricks
As part of @homesteadchronicles QuaranTEAM thing, I’m hoping to post a bit of a series on bread baking, to hopefully show you all that it’s actually... not that hard. I don’t know where the idea that baking your own bread is some luxury thing that only highly skilled professionals can do, but it’s a lie! Anyone can bake bread! Even if you are a busy person, you can bake bread, because most of the time the bread is rising and you can do anything else. If I can bake bread weekly in college with a full course load, you can too.
We’ll be starting off with some basic tricks and advice that’ll apply to all bread recipes regardless of type. I’ll also touch on some of the science of bread, aka the Why of what you do these things, and clarify some of the vocabulary. AKA this is going to get long. Let’s go!
Making The Dough
First things first, you’ve got to make the dough, which is fairly easy. But, here are some good tips to keep in mind.
Buy your yeast in a jar. They are like $6, and will last you a long while. Keep the yeast in the fridge, and it will be good for months. Most recipes ask for a packet of yeast, which is about 2 1/2 teaspoons! (A note - you can make your own yeast and cut that cost, but we won’t get into that since this is for beginners)
Start your yeast before adding the rest of the ingredients. Use warm (NOT boiling) water or milk, add the yeast and any sugar the recipe calls for, and let it sit for about 5 minutes, or until you see foam (It looks a bit like sea foam for reference).
Keep salt separate from direct contact with the yeast. I usually put the flour in first, then add the salt and any butter or eggs asked for on top of that. Salt will kill the yeast that you just spent time getting all happy, which we don’t want!
If you have a stand mixer, use a dough hook (the one that looks like Captain Hook’s hand). If you don’t have a stand mixer, use your hands, not an electric mixer or wooden spoon. Spatulas and wooden spoons just make it harder, and a hand mixer will clog in seconds.
Kneading
It seems to me that, other than time, kneading is the biggest concern beginner bread makers have, but it’s not a nightmare. Now, the reason you knead bread isn’t actually because of the yeast, but because you want to build up the gluten strands. This is why bead pulls apart all nice and has that tension when you pull that you expect (whereas cakes and pastry crumbles, because you don’t build up gluten). It seems complicated, but it actually isn’t at all, especially if you have a stand mixer.
If you have a stand mixer, just let the thing run for about 5 minutes and that’s it.
If you don’t and have to knead by hand, there’s a bunch of techniques. The one I use is to take the lump of dough, stretch it out with the base of my palm, roll it back up, turn it to the side, so the now longer side from rolling it is pointing away from me, stretch it again, and repeat. I recommend this method for beginners.
If you have to hand mix it, then keep this in mind - If you added olive oil, use OIL to grease your hands and surface. If you did NOT add olive oil (or another type of oil) then use FLOUR. This has to do with whether a dough is enriched (has eggs, butter, or milk) or standard (no eggs, milk, or butter). Just in general, don’t use anything to knead that you haven’t already added in.
You should need for about 5 - 10 minutes as a general rule of thumb, but there are a few ways to check that it’s read to prove.
The Window Pane Test - This is a test to make sure you’ve built up enough gluten. Stretch a chunk of dough between your thumbs and pointer fingers. If you can stretch it so you can see light through it, without the dough breaking, then you’ve got enough gluten. This test isn’t a be all end all - if you stop kneading before it passes the test, then you’re bread won’t automatically suck, it’s just a good way to double check it’s just right.
The dough looks smooth. Dough goes through a lot of stages when making bread. When you first start mixing, it tends to look weird, all separated and nasty. Once it’s mixed into a dough, it’s lumpy and sticky. Once it’s properly kneaded, the dough will look smooth and won’t stick to your hands or the bowl, which is what you want
If you press your finger into it, and it bounces back, that’s another good sign.
Proving
Ahh the easiest part of baking bread. The leave it in the corner and do something else phase. Proving bread allows the yeast to work it’s magic and grow, giving bread those beautiful air bubbles that make the texture so light and perfect. You almost always will have two proves, the first one when it’s in ball form, the second after you’ve shaped the thing.  Between the first and second prove, though, always punch down your dough before shaping it. “But Elliot,” you say, “I just got all those air bubbles in there! Why would I get rid of them? You just said we need them!” Right you are. But punching down the dough allows it to have structure. Doughs that don’t get punched down tend to spread out all over the place and be a bit of a mess, and if you don’t punch it down then shaping it gets difficult. So just give the thing a few wallops before making it into it’s final shape.
The timing of the proves varies per recipe but in general, about 45-60 minutes for a first prove, and 30 or so minutes for a second is usually good. This WILL vary depending on the type of bread you are making. If you’ve added eggs, butter, or milk (an enriched bread remember), it will need a longer prove, since those slow down the rise of the yeast (we call it retarding the yeast), if you are making a bread that needs bigger air bubbles, like ciabatta, you’ll probably need longer too, stuff like that. So follow your recipe! Just a couple of tips for the best proves -
Let the bread prove in a warm spot. This makes the yeast happy, happy!
Cover the dough while proving, either with a plastic bag, ceran wrap, or if  nothing else is available, a slightly damp towel. Covering the dough keeps a crust from forming, which will hinder the prove.
Shaping and Baking
This is all fairly explanatory stuff that relies mostly on the recipe and type of bread you’re making, but I wanted to touch on it briefly. Namely, it’s okay if the bread looks ugly. Trust me, most of my baking looks like crap. But it all tastes good, and that’s what matters. If you do want perfect looking bread, here’s a few tips
Use a wash. There are three types of washes - Egg white, egg with milk, and milk. Egg washes will give a darker color to the bread and make them nice and shiny, and milk washes make them soft, which is useful when making burger buns or other dinner rolls.
If you want a nice crust, use steam with an egg wash. Steam creates that beautiful, crunchy crust. Professional bread ovens have a steam injector, but you can create the same affect by putting a pan with sides in the oven as it’s preheating, and then pouring cold water in as you put in the bread. Just remember to keep the door closed until it’s ready to come out!
Remember that the bread will rise a bit more in the oven. The heat will give the yeast one final burst of action before it dies, so don’t be surprised if your nicely shaped cinnamon rolls suddenly start overflowing the pan and become truly massive (which has happened to me). This can also be good to know with the second prove - if the bread/rolls/whatever starts looking big during the second prove, even if it’s only been 15 minutes, throw the thing in the oven because it will get massive. Once you put bread in the oven, it’s all in the hands of the gods.
Slice the bread once it’s cooled if you want precise, clean cuts like for sandwich bread. If you don’t, eat it warm with butter and experience the beauty that is freshly baked bread.
In Conclusion...
I really hope that these tips can help you start baking bread with a bit more confidence. It is possible, and it’s really not all that hard. You could ignore 99% of these tips and your bread would probably be just fine as long as you kneaded it at least a little (unless it’s no knead bread!) and proved it. Bread is not inaccessible. It’s not something that only the most AestheticTM of Cottagecore people can do. You could do it. Yes you, and you could save a shit ton of money doing it! One bag of flour can make six loaves of sandwich bread, and a jar of yeast lasts months, so overall cost is so much lower long term. Plus, it’s really hard to stress about quarantine with fresh baked bread and butter, all I’m saying here. Hopefully the first recipe, a basic sandwich bread, will be up by the weekend, and I’ll reblog the other recipes I’ve posted in between then. Happy baking!

Worlds Colliding - Chapter Eleven
Tumblr media
Here’s the next chapter!! I hope you guys are excited :) Please like and reblog, let me know if you would like to be added to the tag list!
Relationships: Dean x OC, Sam, Stiles x OC, Scott
Warnings: Mention of car accident
Description: The two groups unite to find out what’s coming. Dean tells Natalie about his true feelings.
Catch up here:
Chapter One Chapter Two Chapter Three Chapter Four Chapter FiveChapter Six Chapter Seven Chapter Eight Chapter Nine Chapter Ten
Natalie sat at the kitchen table, not a single emotion passed over her face. The plant on the other side of the room had captured her attention, effectively causing her to ignore every person that was sitting around her. The ticking of the clock was echoing in her ears, louder and louder. Stiles’ thigh was pressed against hers, barely any space existing between their chairs. His face was pinched into an angry scowl, his eyes never leaving Dean and Sam, who sat across from them.
Dean tapped his foot up and down in nervousness. With each passing moment, he resisted the urge to pound the skinny dork in front of him and take Natalie into his arms with a passion. She looked so gorgeous, more grown up than he could have imagined, but exactly the same as he remembered. His Natalie. Her hair was in a messy bun and she didn’t have any makeup on, but she was still flawless in his eyes. But he knew that she hated his guts. So he resolved to keep a blank face on and squeezing his hand into a tight fist over and over again.
“Why don’t we just explain what we’re doing here?” Sam finally offered, shifting in his chair.
Natalie scoffed and kept her eyes on the fern. She bunched up her shirt sleeves in her hands, needing to hold on to something for support. Something that wasn’t attached to a raging, testosterone-filled boy.
“I can tell you’ve really grown up, Nat.” Sam muttered under his breath. Natalie’s eyes widen in such disbelief at his comment.
“You have got to be kidding me. You don’t know anything about who I am, Sam. Not anymore.” He rolled his eyes at her, an annoyed expression twitching at his face.
She took a long look at Sam. He had gotten even taller than she had remembered, his hair starting to grow out just a little bit. His muscles were larger now and were fighting against his t-shirt. Natalie didn’t want to admit it, but he looked good. Although, he still carried himself the same way, his attitude was as if he was doing her a favor by being her. That attitude that made her want to reach out and yank his hair harshly.
“Nothing seems to have changed to me, you still act like a baby when things don’t go your way.” Sam said angrily. Natalie’s jaw dropped.
“Okay, Sam, that’s not effective for the situation. Can you cool it?” Dean directed his comment to his brother.
“You two ditched me, out of the blue, and expect that after five years of silence, I’ll welcome you back with open arms.” She turned her pitiless gaze to Dean, who still had yet to say a word to her since the diner. “You ripped my heart out and just left me to pick up the pieces.”
Dean’s heart punched against his chest in pain. “Nat... I’m so sorry. You have to know I was doing what I thought was best.”
She ignored his statement. “And now, I find out that you also knew about me being some sort of... supernatural... being and didn’t think it was information I might need to know?” Her voice had gotten low, animosity leaking from every word.
Dean went to speak but Natalie held a hand up to interrupt him. “Just save it. Let’s just stick with the facts that I need to know. The sooner I know, the sooner we can go our separate ways.”
Scott and Stiles watched the exchange back and forth like a tennis match, unsure when to jump in. Stiles reached under the table and put a soft touch on her thigh, reminding her that he was there for every step. She didn’t need to be afraid because he wouldn’t leave her, but he was proud of her for sticking up for herself. The soft touch of his hand lit a fire within her, giving her strength.
Dean sighed in defeat and looked at the table, studying the grains. Sam’s arms were folded across his chest as if to show that he was in protest. Again, the ticking of the clock took over the strained kitchen.
Finally, Dean spoke. “When you were sixteen, I started noticing that all these weird things would happen around you. It’d be at times that you got very excited... or extremely angry. It was like a vacuum was sucking all of the air out of the room-out of my lungs. And you could move things, but I don’t think you noticed it.” Natalie’s heart thumped excitedly at his words, words of memories she didn’t have. “One night, you and Sam had a fight. He had caught you smoking weed with some kids from school. He forced you to come home and you were pretty upset.” She looked to Sam but his eyes were fixed downward. “You two kept yelling at each other, and even though I was trying to stop it, your...power...took over. You lifted off the ground and everything around you was flying into the air, straight at Sam’s head.” This story was scratching a part of her brain that was dying to come bursting out and she could feel a headache coming to the forefront of her brain.
Stiles’ mind was reeling at this information. He was dying to ask questions but he didn’t want to burst the moment, instead opting to let Dean continue uninterrupted.
“The thing is... my dad, us, we’re hunters.” Scott’s ears perked up at this confession. “My dad hates supernatural things. Something supernatural killed our mom.” Natalie frowned and a pit of sadness swelled in her stomach, but she shook it away. She refused to let this turn into some pity party.
Dean continued, “Sam knew that my dad would kill you if he ever found out what you were. And he’d probably disown me if he knew that I’d known. I was so scared, Nat. I didn’t know what I was supposed to do, but I didn’t want to lose you. So I contacted our family friend, Bobby Singer, and he put me in contact with a Shaman.
“I took you to his shop one day and he performed a ritual that would take away your powers... but it also took away your memories of anything having to do with your powers. So you didn’t ever remember why Sam was so mad at you... why he didn’t want to be around you.” Sam’s shoulders tensed up at that comment.
Scott suddenly spoke up, “So you’re telling us that this shaman removed her ability to use her powers? How does that even work?”
Dean ran a rough hand over his face. “I’m not really sure. He had some ability to control spirits. He was chanting and her body was fighting it. Both of them were hovering in the air, her eyes turned completely white, and she... she created this type of force field; I couldn’t get near them. She was screaming and the sound of her screams were wrecking the room. It was terrifying...” He trailed off quietly. “All I know is that nothing ever happened after we went there. You were normal.”
Natalie’s eyes were piercing a whole through Dean’s head, harsh and unrelenting. “Why did you leave me alone? Why would you do that to me and then toss me aside like a used tissue?”
“Nat, I love y-loved you so much. I thought it would be better - safer - for you to live without the complications me and my family bring along. Especially now that you’re human.” His arm was begging to just reach out and grab her hand, but he ignored it just like he was ignoring every other urge in his body. He looked up at Natalie, his eyes pleading for her to understand where he was coming from.
Everything Dean had said had just made her angrier and angrier. Instead of staying with her - loving her - he had left her. He had taken a part of her soul just because she was different than his own family. The person that she had grown to love as a child was gone. Because her Dean would have never done something like that.
“So what am I? Because I sure as hell aren’t human.” Was all Natalie could say. All other words were escaping her mind at the moment.
A hurt look washed over his features, but he answered. “If I knew, I would tell you. But I’ve never seen someone else with those abilities.” He paused and closed his eyes. “I was just trying to do what was best, Nat.”
Stiles had been quiet the whole time, storing all the information he could. He had never heard of any supernatural creature with those abilities, but he was sure that Deaton would know if something like that existed. He kept his hand steady on Natalie’s thigh, rubbing his thumb in circles softly. Stiles could tell that she was clinging to her sanity, wanting to crumble into the floor.
“Why are you here then? If she’s not supposed to have her power anymore, why did you show up and mess around with her life?” Scott inquired. He was just as confused as the rest of them but he saw how hurt Natalie was and she was his friend first.
At that, Sam directed his attention to Scott. “We were hunting a demon a little over a month ago and it was begging for us to let it free. Started talking about a girl that has these crazy insane powers, saying that their boss wants to use her for it’s own demented plans.”
“Yeah and...?” Stiles prompted.
“So, we’re questioning this little bitch some more and she’s telling us all about the things this girl can do. I don’t know how she knew, but she said every single one of your powers.” Natalie’s eyes looked back and forth between Sam and Dean. Everything that had come out that day was starting to suffocate her and she was trying to break her way out.
“You’re telling me, that a... demon... wants to kidnap me and force me to do his bidding. With powers that I don’t even have anymore.” The words were hanging in the air around her, closing in with each moment.
Stiles’ pulls her a little closer and whispers in her ear. “I won’t let that happen, baby. I won’t let anything hurt you. Ever.”
Natalie smiled at the sentiment, though in her heart of hearts, she knew that he would never stand a chance against a demon. A demon. Something that she thought only existed in her nightmares. Although she truly had no idea what kinds of things Stiles and Scott had fought in their high school career.
Dean tensed as he watched Stiles caress her back and whisper into her ear. He pictured yanking him out of his seat and breaking his arm with barely any effort. Scott sat a little taller as the reeking scent of jealousy increases in the room and he kept his eyes locked on Dean, who’s eyes were locked on his best friend.
Sam cleared his throat to get everyone’s attention again. “Natalie, I’m sorry for what’s happened in the past, but Dean and I won’t let those things get close to you.”
“But just to be safe, you should probably start wearing this again...” Dean slowly slides her necklace across the table and Natalie froze in her seat. The small little pendant stared up at her, waiting for her to bring it to its home around her neck.
“Wha-what the hell? Why would I wan-want to wear that, Dean?” She stuttered.
“This charm keeps you from being possessed by demons.” Sam and Dean pulled down their shirts to reveal matching tattoos of the design.
Natalie scooted the chair back as far as it could go and sighed. She grabbed the necklace reluctantly and started to head out of the room. “I need some time to think. This is all way too much.” Her voice cracked as a tear escaped its rightful place.
Stiles turned and started to follow her out of the room but Scott grabbed his arm. “Just let her have some space, man. I’m sure she’s really overwhelmed with all of these confessions today.”
Stiles knew that Scott was right, but every fiber in his body was calling out to Natalie. He wanted to pull her into his arms and shield her from all of this crap. He wanted to kick all of these people out of the house and spend the rest of the night watching movies with his girl. But... he also knew that Dean wouldn’t leave without a fight. Stiles knew that he cared about Natalie just as much as himself, and it was petrifying to him.
---
Two hours later and Natalie was still perched in a chair on the front porch, trying to soak up the last of the warmth for the day. Her eyes were puffy and her face completely flushed from crying, soft sobs occasionally bubbling back up out of her chest. For the most part though, she was done crying and just enjoying the view of the sun sitting on the horizon. Occasionally, the wind would sweep across the porch and blow through her hair, giving her the extra help to take a deep breath.
The door creaked open and her heart started pounding as she caught a glimpse of Dean sauntering out of the house. He had his hands stuffed awkwardly in his pockets and his shoulders were tense, like he was holding his breath, expecting her to start yelling at him.
“Hey there...” Natalie mumbled. She pulled her jacket around herself tighter, trying to create a barrier.
Dean plopped down on the stair steps and looked around at the neighborhood. “This is a really nice place you have here.” He sounded sad, his green eyes were searching through memories instead of the yard in front of him. Natalie’s body desired to reach out and rub his back, but she refrained. It was an automatic response that she didn’t know was still in her.
“Thanks, it’s a nice place to call home...” She trailed off.
“How can you afford this nice of a house? You’re only twenty-one. You have some fancy-pants job now?” He glanced over at the girl.
Natalie’s gaze fell to her hands, sitting lonely in her lap. “Laura passed away a couple years ago.” Dean’s stomach flipped.
“What? H-how?” He croaked out, shocked. Her aunt had been one reason that he had convinced himself that Natalie would be alright. And now he was hearing that she had been alone for years. He was such an idiot.
“Um, a car accident. It was near the end of winter and this car hit some black ice, crossed over the line, and hit her head on. She never even made it to the hospital.”
The color had left Dean’s face. “Oh my god, I am so sorry, Nat. I can’t even imagine how difficult that must have been. I know how close you and Laura were after...everything.”
Natalie started to speak but the words choked in her throat and water clouded her eyes.
He stood up and moved closer to Natalie but she waved him away. She had a couple tears running down her face but she wiped them away quickly and chuckled. “I’ll be okay, Dean. You haven’t worried about me for five years, no reason to start now.”
Dean sighed and sat down in the chair next to her. “I thought about you every single day, Nat. You have to believe me when I say that it nearly killed me to leave you that night. I’ve been running on autopilot all these years without you.” He reached for her, struggling to hold her hand in his.
“That’s a nice story, Dean, but not one of my favorites.” She said bitterly, avoiding his eyes.
He lifted his hand and cupped her chin, pulling her face closer to his. A small gasp left her lips in surprise, she could feel his warm breath on her face. Their lips were barely inches apart.
“I have been lost without you, Nat. And I’m so sorry that I hurt you and that I left you to pick up the pieces of your life alone. Especially after what happened to Laura. But I love you, I have since the day I met your sassy six year old self, and I promise that I will never hurt you ever again. I promise that I will love you until the end of my life. And I won’t let anything...else...hurt you either.” Natalie’s lip trembled, tears growing again, the lump had returned to her throat.
“I-I don’t know what to say, D” She managed to say. Her green eyes darting between his eyes and his lips with uncertainty.
Determination flooded through Dean’s eyes. “Just say you love me too. Say that you’ll forgive me and let me earn back your trust.” He pleaded.
Natalie wanted to scoff but something held her back. “You make it sound easy.”
His hand tightened around her tiny one with hope. “It is easy, baby. All of this has taught me is that I don’t want to ever be without you again. You make me strong.” His thumb brushed against her cheek, sending sparks dancing across her skin with passion. She was sure he could hear her heart banging in her chest.
The man that she had loved for a majority of her life was here, in front of her, declaring his love for her. She wanted to scream that she loved him too and that she could forget everything he had done. It would be so easy to lean forward and kiss the lips that used to feel so familiar to her. It would make things so much easier if she could just forgive him for what he did. But her heart clenched at the thought of the past and her walls hardened again. A empty look passed over her face and she dropped his hand.
“I really appreciate everything you’ve said, Dean. And I don’t have any ill-will towards you. But it’s too late. Let’s just get this over with and we can go our separate ways.” With that, Natalie stood up and walked back into the house, leaving Dean alone in the night.
Dean cleared his throat and dried the tears that had escaped. He wished he could forget the look on her face, expel that memory from his head. Now he had to come to terms that the girl he’d loved for longer than he could remember was lost to him forever. He would never have her to call his own.

disconnected thoughts on fandom and the indieweb
Recently I discovered the IndieWeb project, and I... think I am a lot more intrigued by it than by other Better Social Media Platform pipe dreams and decentralization projects I’ve seen? Because it’s not a monolithic platform that has to be all things to all people, or even one that has to gain a critical mass of userbase before it’s useful for anything. It’s just a bunch of people, making sites that work for them, and banging out protocols so their sites can talk to each other and hook up to the social-media hangouts du jour.
The basic idea:
- Have a personal website, preferably a personal domain name, that is the hub for your online identity and stuff. Posts, tweets, pictures, links, reading list, events, whatever you’d normally be posting to social media. You host it, you control it, you own it. You tweak it to fit your needs, no Xkit required.
- Once the original archival copy is up on your personal site, cross-post it to whatever social media sites it belongs on. You don’t have to quit your Tumblr habit, or convince your friends to quit theirs, or give up the audience you can reach on a large site.
- Use a pingbacks-on-steroids tool to collect all the responses (likes, reblogs, comments, etc) from the various sites you’ve cross-posted to. Ideally, display them at the bottom of the post back on your website.
As an idea, I like it a lot. In practice, a lot depends on what tools are already available, how useable they are, how capable you are of coding/templating/configuring to fill in the gaps, and how difficult large sites make it to push/pull from them automatically. That’s pretty much what I’m interested in exploring in the near future, for my own use if nothing else. I already have most of my Tumblr content backed up to a Wordpress install on my own shared hosting account, so I’m kinda curious see how much IndieWeb compatibility I can manage using plugins and template tweaks.
Indieweb and fandom:
As a potential tool for fandom to wean ourselves off the various hellsites we’ve inhabited over the years... okay, it’s an interesting thought. One with lots of unanswered questions, but interesting.
Lots of unanswered questions, so the rest of this is going under a cut.
- Upside: I know a lot of older fans are still nostalgic about the early blogosphere and even--heaven forfend--the Geocities days. Many things about them were shit, but the archipelago of personal fan shrines, indie blogs, having a personal site with a personal archive of your work, etc. was awesome. And the “own your own creations” ethos fits in nicely with AO3′s “we have to own the servers” philosophy.
- Enabling factor: Fandom builds and customizes stuff like crazy. Yes, including the younger generations who weren’t around for the “build it yourself” days and seem to think AO3 burst fully formed out of the forehead of a long-lost deity. What, you haven’t noticed that even on a hobbled hellsite like Tumblr, teenagers are using the relative freedom of the theme system to spontaneously rediscover all the sins of Geocities web design? (I rib with affection, as someone who definitely had a page with flaming torch gifs and a sparklecursor back in 2001.) Full, out-of-the-box, point-and-click setup is necessary to get fandom to adopt something in any decent numbers. But once we’re there, a disproportionate number of us start tinkering with anything that’s customizable, and when someone with actual coding skills comes out with a useful tool to supplement missing capabilities, it spreads like wildfire.
- Gaps and directions to expand: Indieweb principles include “scratch your own itches,” so here are my itches, which I’m going to shamelessly project onto fandom at large.
Import--needs rock solid LiveJournal-clone and Tumblr support if your site is to serve as an archive. I don’t know if there even is a working Wordpress plugin to import from LJ or Dreamwidth. The best-supported Tumblr->Wordpress importer is actually better than most standalone Tumblr backup tools, but it still mangles video posts/embeds. It’d also be cool to have import tools for AO3, Deviantart, and other major fanwork repositories.
Once your Tumblr posts are in, there's no way to automate the very first thing I’d want to do upon liberating my data from the vise-like jaws of What Tumblr Wants You To Do With Its Site: separate out posts I created, posts I added comments to, and posts I just shared via reblog. A nice addition would be the ability to copy Tumblr tags to a metadata field that’s separate from Wordpress tags--WP tags tend to be organizational, whereas on Tumblr, tags are often a sidechannel for comments that don’t propagate on reblog, thus filled with all sorts of crap.
On that note, Itch #3 is mass-organization tools. Select all posts that fit certain criteria and do a mass edit on their tags, categories, post types, or other taxonomy data. Lots of fandom folks have years or decades worth of content from various sites, making organizational tasks highly impractical to do manually. I’ve dicked around with a few Wordpress mass-edit plugins, but none of them seemed to work that well.
Not sure how well the existing backfeed tools support Tumblr notes, but for fandom to bite, the Tumblr support oughta be pretty damn slick. And the cross-posting should ideally support all the features of a native Tumblr post, because by god, we will use them, and we will notice if an expected one is missing. I can spot IFTTT cross-posts from AO3 without even reading text, and tbh my eyes usually skip right over them, unfair as that may be.
If this project extends to feed readers/aggregators, the embrace of multi-site cross-posting implies a need for deduplication. Preferably getting rid of Tumblr’s charming “barf the full post back out onto your dashboard every time someone you’re following shares/responds to it” behavior in the process. For fandom use, it’ll need a blacklist feature. And I’d love some more heavy-duty filtering, selective subscriptions (like to just one tag of a blog), creating multiple feeds based on topic or on how much firehose you want...
This may be a personal itch, but at least for personal archiving needs, I’m sick, sick, sick of the recency bias that’s eaten the internet since the first stirrings of Web 2.0. Wikis are practically the only sites that have escaped chronological organization. It would be cool to have easily-manipulated collections with non-kludgey support for series ordering, order-by-popularity, order-by-popularity with a manual bump for posts you want to highlight, hell even alphabetical ordering. None of these things are remotely unsolved problems, but they’re poorly supported on the social-media silos most people’s content lives on these days. Fandom’s suffered from this since at least the days of LiveJournal, which had the ominous beginnings of what’s since become the Tumblr Memory Hole. Relentless chronological ordering + the signal-to-noise ratio of any space with regular social interaction = greatest hits falling down the memory hole unless a community practices extensive manual cataloguing. Hell, LJ fandom did practice extensive manual cataloguing, but even within that silo, there was so much decentralization that content discovery was shit if you didn’t know the right accounts to search through. Like, fuck, at least forums bump threads to the top if they’re still active--LJ and blogs have the same "best conversation evar falls inexorably off the map as new posts are added, no matter how active it is” problem that InsideTheWeb forums did in 1999. (Anyone else remember InsideTheWeb? AKA 13-year-old me’s first experience with platform shutdown, frantic archiving attempts, and massive data loss. Fun times.) Tumblr and Twitter, meanwhile, spam you with duplicates of the original post every time someone you’re following replies to/shares it, a key component of the endless firehose of noise drowning out any attempt to hang on to the signal.
All those itches are things I could probably code myself if I got a stubborn enough bee in my bonnet, which might well happen. On the other hand, I have some deeper doubts, ones that aren’t going to get addressed by Wordpress plugins or shiny backfeed support:
The whole concept of IndieWeb fails to address (and might even worsen) what I suspect is the core dysfunction of social media. Which is the degradation of community spaces, and their replacement with a hopeless snarl where all content lives in individual accounts. There are a lot of weird effects that arise when the “social” sphere is built entirely upon the one-on-one connections created when someone subscribes to another account or gives someone else permission to view their restricted posts. Echo chambers, shame mobs, out-of-context remarks going viral, popular accounts setting off harassment storms whenever they disagree with someone, the difficulty of debunking hoaxes once they’re out in the wild... all of those are either created or made much, much worse by the lack of any reasonable, stable, shared expectation of who a post’s audience is.
Basically, if “own your content and host it on your site” also applies to your comments, interactions, etc, it starts running counter to one of the strengths of the Old Web. Which was community contexts where you explicitly weren’t posting to your own space or addressing everyone who might be looking at the main clearinghouse of all your different stuff. You were posting to the commons shared by a particular group with a particular culture and interests, not all of whom were people you’d necessarily want to follow outside that limited context, some of whom you might disagree with or dislike, but in any case you knew what audience you were broadcasting to. You knew what the conversation was, how similar conversations had gone in the past, and the reputations of all the main participants--not just the ones you yourself would subscribe to and the ones attention-grabbing enough to get shared by the people on your subscription list. And you weren’t spamming all your other acquaintances with chatter on a topic they weren’t interested in.
Shared spaces can also establish whatever social norms they need and moderate accordingly. (Plus, plurality of spaces = plurality of norms for different needs, which would solve a LOT of what’s currently ailing fandom.) Peaceable enforcement of a code of conduct, beyond the “minimum viable standard” sitewide abuse policy, is fundamentally impossible on social media, where individual muting is the closest thing you can get to moderation. That + unstable audience = any social norms that exist are so unenforceable it turns people into frothing shame-mob zealots, ratcheting up the coercive pressure on everyone the more it fails to work on the handful of unrepentant assholes who would’ve been permabanned from any self-respecting forum within a week. Moving onto personal sites with beefed up syndication/backfeed capabilities ain’t gonna fix that. Meanwhile the truly heinous dickweeds who’d ordinarily run afoul of the sitewide abuse policy will have the same capabilities, minus any risk of getting banned.
If there haven’t already been epic drama meltdowns caused by the “reply in your own space by making your own post, which includes a copy of the original post for context” model... it’s only a matter of time. You don’t even need malicious actors, just a human conflict where one party has overprotective subscribers. Or information turns out to be faulty and in need of correction. Or an argumentative type stumbles on the permalink of an acrimonious reply post that was actually resolved amicably several replies downthread. Or someone edits an apology into their controversial post and someone who’s been attacking it refuses to update their copy because tilting at strawmen is more fun. Or someone tries to make an embarrassing post go away by deletion and their co-conversationists don’t cooperate. Tumblr’s “reply by reposting in your own space and adding commentary” system already spawns endless floods of drama and misunderstanding, and that’s a system with some limits on the participants’ control, and relatively disposable accounts/identities if the shit hits the fan.
Basically, I’m all for personal websites as archives of your creations, but seriously dubious of them as archives of your interactions. Especially if the interactions aren’t well-segregated from the regular content feed that goes out to everyone who follows you. Yes, abuses of moderator power when interaction is all taking place on a site the mod controls are a thing. But if those sites are an archipelago of indie spaces rather than a monolithic platform, shitty mods don’t thwart the development of a healthy social ecosystem, they just drive everyone away to a competing space whose mod sucks less.
(Private/access-restricted archives of your interactions might be a compromise? You still have your stuff in case the other site goes down, but it’s not out there replicating the ill effects of the Tumblr reblog-to-respond model.)
Leaving aside all that, the IndieAuth component--using personal sites as stable identities you can log in with--is just as workable for community platforms as it is for cross-blog commenting. Proliferation of unlinkable accounts was one of the downfalls of forums, after all. That said, one potential point of friction is that fandom is far more pseudonym-centric than the devs and tech hobbyists who’ve coalesced around IndieWeb so far. But stable pseuds with years of reputation behind them have social effects that resemble real names more than anything else, so as potential culture clashes go, I’d hope that’s fairly surmountable.
As noted in the musings on LiveJournal archiving above: CONTENT DISCOVERY IS A BITCH IN DECENTRALIZED COMMUNITIES and that’s a major stumbling block for fandom. OTOH, platform-agnostic protocols with customization potential = room for experimentation with independently-run discovery/search/tagging layers. (Life goals: stay uncool enough that my “Like Uber, but for ___” elevator pitch ends up being “It’s like Technorati, but for fanfiction of Kirk drilling Spock.”)
Okay, that’s it, jesus christ it’s time for me to go to bed.
