Buddie 509 - Eddie & Telenovelas

In 509 buck calls eddie on watching telenovelas with chris. It was the most adorable call out this season imho. Others have already noted that buck knows eddie’s secrets (and vice versa). That of course happens because buck and eddie trust each other, spend a ton of time together, and confide in each other. There’s more to eddie’s love of telenovelas though I think. Let’s talk about why eddie might be reticent to admit that he (not just abuela!) consumes highly emotional melodramas.

Eddie tries to front and pretend that he watches them to practice spanish with chris. Okay I guess. Telenovelas are good for that. I know because I’ve done it and had spanish teachers in the past recommend it. Still, eddie speaks spanish fluently and has family in town (abuela and pepa) that speak spanish fluently too. So his reason for watching telenovelas is purposefully thin. But the bigger indication that he’s just making up excuses is his refusal to look buck in the eye while he spits those little white lies! No, my dude enjoys watching telenovelas, independent of chris (and abuela).

I think eddie actually loves telenovelas because they are chock-full of intense emotion that he denies himself. Eddie is reserved and in control. Telenovelas are not that. Like at all. Telenovelas are driven by tons of emotions as well as secrets, and eddie has plenty of both. Buck is the person closest the eddie’s inner/emotional life and buck is the one who knows eddie secrets, even the low stakes domestic kind like watching telenovelas.

Toni and clive’s story has strong telenovela energy and eddie is hooked. He wants to know the details of their story. He actually encourages pursuing the “long lost love” and even asks “what happens next in the story”. Eddie is a romantic at heart! He believes in the love story and wants it to work out. But it’s interesting that he doesn’t see romance for himself. He’s on the outside looking in. He’s watching toni and clive’s story unfold but not pursuing anything similar for himself at the moment. He’s living vicariously through others, whether they be on his tv screen or members of the firefam.

I think eddie’s resignation??? to his own lack of romance at the moment is at least partially why he also stays on the sidelines in the buck/taylor conversation in the fire truck. He’s watching buck’s love life unfold just like one of his telenovelas.

Laughing, exchanging knowing looks with other viewers (i.e. hen, ravi, and bobby), and occasionally talking to the tv (i.e. “when was the last time a woman told you she had to go home to wash her hair” and “yeah. who does that?”). Eddie has given up on love, at least for now, so he’s decided to just watch other people’ love lives unfold. Still he was a tiny bit active in toni/clive’s story, encouraging hen to get involved and help make that love story happen. But with Buck, he mostly just watched. I have more thoughts about how that scene went down but I’ll leave that for another post.

Buck happily calls eddie out and eddie doesn’t make eye contact with him after the call out. I see you avoiding, shying away from your truth, eddie. Buck however is looking at eddie the whole time and when eddie tries to save face, buck lets him and just say “uh huh” with the sweetest “soft shit like this makes me love you more everyday” face. Buck just loves finding eddie’s heart, no matter how hard he tries to hide it.

I legit think eddie wishes that he had even half the permission for free and open emotional expression that telenovelas and one evan buck buckley have. I also think it’s interesting af that telenovelas aren’t just high emotion but they are also dramatic. They are messy emotion, and we know how eddie feels about messes. But the telenovela idea at least implies that eddie is maybe trying to at least LOOK at emotions, especially messy heart/true love emotions, even if he’s not quite ready to deal with his own yet. Eddie watches telenovelas because he loves them and wants permission to feel out loud...even if it’s a little messy. He just hasn’t given himself that permission yet. Or maybe he’s waiting on buck to give him that permission, to step up and lean in.

my first listen of resonance pt. 1!

i wanted to start doing these since i’m very interested in music and stuff and i wanna learn how to properly express musical things etc. etc. so yea!! feel free to ignore and these are just my opinions, so pls don’t come @ me thanks :)

track 1: make a wish (birthday song) - nct u (ft. taeyong, doyoung, jaehyun, lucas, xiaojun, jaemin, shotaro)

i actually really liked this, if we’re talking purely about the music (the mv is another thing....i won’t talk about that). the music was interesting all the way through and was full of unexpected twists. all the members did so well!!! but the members that really stood out to me in the mv and also just listening to the song were jaemin and xiaojun! they did so well and they nailed their parts so well!!! there’s just something very satisfying about jaemin’s rap in this song, and all of xiaojun’s parts suited him really well and it was nice to see him sing in a style that was different to the typical wayv style. also rapper jaehyun!!! his parts suited him so well and i’m so happy we got to see him do a rap-esque part hehe :) the only part i probably didn’t like was the part where there was that time-warp effect before the final chorus like that felt so out of place ... why is it there?? also where’s shotaro tho?? like i didn’t even hear him,,, if you’re gonna add a new member at least use him sm :/ | okay so i just watched the line distribution and jaemin has so little lines :((( shotaro doesn’t have many solo parts but has a lot of adlibs and honestly? good for him!! it’s really good for a debut!! doyong and lucas should’ve had more lines too :/ anyways overall i really love this song and i’m so excited to see the stages!!!

track 2: misfit - nct u (ft. johnny, taeyong, mark, hendery, jeno, yangyang, sungchan)

this is legit my favourite song so far it’s incredible!! when the song started i just started full-on vibing!! this song is so fun and has so much energy and i had no expectations at first but the track video blew me away, which made me so excited to hear the full song, and it did not disappoint :) everyone in this song SLAYED. i have nothing else to say except that because the raps were fire and each member pulled their verse off so well it continued to make me smile line after line after line. for sungchan’s debut, it was incredible to hear him spit fire like that and i am so excited to see how he grows as a rapper if he’s already this good at debut oh gosh. but my favourite part has to be mark’s second verse where the music cuts out and he keeps going and his rhythm actually speeds up once the music cuts. that blew my mind in the track video and still has the same effect on me listening to it again. the genius of cutting out the music is incredible and it adds so much not just to the rap but to the song overall. my only complaint for this song is that johnny got like...4 lines. cmon sm please give him lines he’s more than just a visual!! overall this song is something i really enjoyed and something that the members pulled off so well even though it’s so different and unexpected from nct :)

track 3: volcano - nct u (ft. taeyong, doyoung, jaehyun, winwin, jungwoo, lucas, mark) (aka nct 2018 boss unit)

what is going on in this song......at the beginning it gave me similar vibes to limitless but as i listened to more of the song, it kinda fell apart for me ;-; like the vocal parts were really good (jaehyun high note!!) and the rap parts were really good but they didn’t flow together as well as they should have, and it ended up feeling as if i was listening to the rap of one song and the vocals of another song :/ also where are sicheng’s parts?? i thought i just didn’t hear him but when i went to check all he has is like...2-3 adlibs?? why is he even in the song then it doesn’t even have choreo?? feels like boss all over again rip sicheng :’(

track 4: light bulb - nct u (ft. taeyong, kun, doyoung, and sungchan)

wow this song...i was very fascinated by the member lineup at first, and then i heard the song and it all makes sense :) everything melds so well together, with ty and sungchan’s rapping pairing perfectly with kun and dy’s vocals, and there are kinda ‘pairs’? like ty and dy and sungchan and kun,, and their voices compliment each other so well aaaaaaa. the only part i felt weird about was the start when ty was rapping over the piano...the rhythm clashed a little but as the song went on it resolved itself thankfully. the vibes reminded me of yestoday and it’s a very different mood from the first 3 songs on the album so i’m kinda confused as to why they’ve put it as track 4 but oh well. sungchan showcased a different side of his rapping here and he’s really beginning to show himself as a very well rounded rapper so i’m actually super impressed but as expected from nct :) my favourite thing about this song has to be kun’s vocals tho. the first time you hear him in the song is when he harmonises with doyong and i tell you the way i Lost It. and every time he sang as sungchan rapped it blew my mind. and doyong and kun’s harmonies,,,, chef’s kiss. can you tell i really love this song aaaaaa okay end of ramble. i think overall i just really appreciate the change in pace of the album since the first 3 were very hype lol.

track 5: dancing in the rain - nct u (ft. taeil, johnny, yuta, kun, jaehyun, jungwoo, xiaojun, chenle)

ok this song blew my mind 🤯 firstly, can we talk about jaehyun and johnny rapping??????? i’m so happy that we got to hear them rap!! it was so beautiful :’) secondly, vocal kings!!! chenle high note!! their voices sound so beautiful together and i’m so happy we got that in this song!! the vibes are also so pretty?? like a lofi jazzy vibe and honestly it feels like singin’ in the rain modern version and i am living :) the only minor issue i have is that because there are so many vocalists in the unit, some of them had really few lines :/ but i think they needed more people to create that effect in the chorus of a lot of people harmonising together, so we gain some we lose some i guess,, but wow i love this song so much can someone write a fic or make an mv based on this song pleaseeeeeeee i would love to see it :’) p.s. i listened to this song twice once on spotify and once on colour-coded lyrics (just to see who sang what) and the more i listen to it the more i love this song aaaaaaaaaa :)

track 6: interlude: past to present

ok this was interesting...i was so confused about the first part cos i couldn’t make sense of what was being narrated, but the second part is another story,,, it’s chock full of references - like there’s that one sound (idk how to describe it) but it’s in both the awaken the world interlude and the neo zone interlude, and the part after that is reminiscent of the punch intro thing...which is why it’s so interesting,,, would the theorists like to have a go? but honestly it was very interesting musically and very nct lmao...i have nothing left to say lol that’s it.

track 7: déjà vu - nct dream (OT7)

wow the vibes on this song are so fun!! this song really suits dream and i think it’s a fitting return for ot7 :) it’s got the playfulness of we go up with a bit more maturity which is very representative of dream’s current phase where they’re growing up but they’re still kids hehe :) i will complain about the line distribution again except everyone’s probably sick of hearing about it lol...but mark has a lot of lines and jeno and jaemin don’t sigh. the line distribution for the vocalists was really quite fair tho :) also renjun bridge!!!! it was so good!!! and haechan intro!!!! wow i love this song so much heh but my favourite part has to be the bgm,, like the dang dang sound that was in the bgm for the entire track really helps to push the song forward and adds a spring to the song that really makes it more playful and fun!! i’m super impressed by this as well since the track video didn’t make me that excited but now i really like it so i think this song was so fun :)

track 8: nectar - wayv (OT7)

let’s formally welcome nectar to the list of nct’s hoe anthems 😌 okay but that aside, i quite liked the song!! the intro was weird but once you get into the song it’s pretty okay!! it’s also slightly different from the wayv sound we’re used to but the members pulled it off well!! i love the bgm too hehe :) ten and sicheng!! i can finally hear them!! and it was so nice to hear them both sing aaaa. also wayv’s vocal line continue to astonish me...that’s the highest i’ve heard kun and dejun sing and it sound so good!!! the rap was fire too and lucas, yangyang and hendery have done it again, they sound so swag which really fits the vibe of the song!! i also love how most of the song is pretty low and starts pretty low but the vocals are such a complete contrast cos they’re so high and that really adds to the song!! i’m so wayv biased but i genuinely really do like this song and ‘gimme that nectar’ will be stuck in my head for the next 24 hours :/

track 9: music, dance - nct 127 (OT9)

this track is so hype 😳 and i enjoyed that so much!! what stood out to me more than anything else in this song was the bgm, and i love how they cut the music, yell “drop that beat!” and then the beat actually drops 🤯 also the bridge,,, a masterpiece...i thought we were gonna get a solid high note and the airy high note comes from nowhere and suddenly i’m so stunned 😳 also this album really is the return of rapper jaehyun huh :) it’s so nice to hear him rap again :) and this song is really satisfying in so many ways, like the rhythm is really good and the bass hits deep and the dance break music thing was so well timed and so well produced and oooooooh i like this track more than i expected :)) oh and ‘music, dance’ will be stuck in my head for the next 24 hours with ‘gimme that nectar’ :/

track 10: faded in my last song - nct u (ft. taeil, johnny, yuta, ten, lucas, renjun, haechan, jisung)

the way i was trying not to SCREAM throughout this song :’) IT’S SO BEAUTIFUL AAAAAA i mean it in the best way possible when i say this could be an ost it’s so beautiful :’) the VOCALS i nearly lost it when ten sang the pre chorus then nearly lost it when renjun sang the second pre chorus and then almost completely lost it during the bridge (especially cos haechan and taeil) holy moly that was a journey :’) also johnny and yuta’s rap style and lucas’ lower tone really fit so well with the song, like it didn’t take away from the sad vibes of the song but it added to the mellowness of the overall song. and can we just take a moment to talk about park jisung’s rap??? it was so short but he nailed it!!!! this entire song was a masterpiece because all their voices fit perfectly together and complement each other so well it just makes this song shine in a different way??? i have so many things that i wanna say about this song but i’m internally screaming so i’m basically incoherent lol. one thing i will say though is the bgm is so pretty and the piano is so nice :’) (also p.s. idk why but this song lowkey gives me got7 vibes but in the best way possible)

track 11: from home - nct u (ft. taeil, yuta, kun, doyoung, renjun, haechan, chenle)

i’m crying........i’m actually crying.....can they not come for me like this..........this song is so beautiful o m g :”) hearing them sing in their native languages about home is so moving?? like it hits a spot and suddenly my eyes are sweating :”) and the way that the transition from one language to another is so smooth and seamless?? like renjun and chenle are singing in chinese and suddenly yuta pops in with a line of japanese and i completely lost it lmaoooooo. and the way they all come together in the bridge is so beautiful, and taeil’s high note after!!!! and the bgm of this song suited it so well, it allowed you to focus on the vocals and still adds to the overall mood and atmosphere of the song, plus at the start it’s a bit muffled out as if it’s being played on an old record and then it becomes unmuffled and the sound is so bright :) and the way that this song sounds a little bittersweet?? i swear when the mv comes out and when i read the translations i will cry even more i’m not even ready and we still have a week to go. this was the song i was looking forward to most and honestly? it didn’t disappoint at all :)

track 12: from home | korean version - nct u (ft. taeil, yuta, kun, doyoung, renjun, haechan, chenle)

it’s just as beautiful, but with less tears lol :) there isn’t really much to say, it still flows just as well in korean as it did in 3 languages, so i think sm just wanted there to be a version that was completely in korean since nct are a korean group lol.

track 13: make a wish (birthday song) | english version - nct u (ft. taeyong, doyoung, jaehyun, lucas, xiaojun, jaemin, shotaro)

well this is interesting....the english version of the song sounds a bit like a hoe anthem (only a bit!!!) so i’m curious about the lyrics to the korean version o_O also i find it a little strange how they say ‘i can do this all day’ in the korean version but say ‘i can do this all night’ in the english version,,, like what’s the difference?? i literally don’t know why they did that but oh well :) still a great song hehe :)

overall, it’s a really interesting album!! it’s a little different from what i expected, but i still really love it!! i think the songs will grow onto me more as i listen to the album more, so yea :))

College adventures! | Part 1 of ?

Jimin + Prompt: “Seriously though, I need to get fucked by somebody other than my life.”

College!AU, Hot Nerd!Jimin, Enemies to Lovers, Swearing.

Rooh’s note: so this happened and it will be little scenarios under 1k on adventures jimin and y/n will have that will eventually lead to smut? That’s my plan, but let’s see where this goes. Jimin chocked on his soup spitting some of it on the table you both were sitting on.

“What the fuck Jimin, close your mouth!” You complained while cleaning your arms that had bits of carrot in them.

“It ain’t my fault you have the weirdest phrases to say at inappropriate times, honestly!” He complained as he tried to clean his tray, in his defense you’re not unusual to say weird stuff but he still had not gotten used to it. “If you want to get fucked so bad why not call Taehyung? You know he said he’s willing to take it from you.” He continued not making eye contact with you.

“I’m not gonna give my v card to Taehyung, god that kid knows me since we were 6, and he’s joking. He has seen me naked more times than I can count, no way he’s the one poping this cherry.” You pointed to your inner parts not really caring about the people around you. Not many could listen to you, but you didn’t really care anyways.

Jimin in the other hand was more than used to it, and took another spoon of his soup ignoring you. “It’s not the end of the world, you can pass this next year, just study more.”

“Study more? What the fuck jimin, I’ve been taking this subject for the last 2 years how the fuck am I gonna study more than I already did? Jesus fucking Christ!” You grunted throwing your body dramatically on the chair.

“Well if you spent more time in the library and less in your room playing videogames maybe you would’ve passed at this point.” He changed plates to proceed to the main course.

“Well if you had spent more time in parties and less in the library you would’ve probably lost your virginity by this point but I’m not calling anyone out.” You hissed, and once again he chocked glaring at you, your tone a little too loud for others to notice.

“You know, if you would’ve been a little bit more nice to me I would probably help you in the first year, but all you did was make fun of me, look at you now.” He kept on eating trying to seem unfazed. “And guess what, at least I-“ he lowered his voice and approached you in front of the table. “I passed all my classes and if everything goes well, I will be leaving this university in the next 2 years” he glared at you again and continued “And, I’m probably gonna leave here with a girlfriend” you laughed, but he ignored you. “you on the other hand, will stay here for another 4 years and your pussy is gonna be as dry as the Sahara desert since all the fucks you get on your online games aren’t enough to actually get you real men.”

Your were furious, but you let it go. “Was I really That mean to you in the first year?” You asked looking into the window, your university cafeteria had a nice view you had to admit.

“You called me fatass every time I walked past you. I mean it’s obvious I have a big ass but now everyone in the university knows about it cause you screamed it every 30 minutess.” He looked down picking his plate, probably loosing his appetite. “You know, that wouldn’t even be so bad, but when you told everyone I was a virgin that’s when I thought you crossed a line. I trusted you with something, and you betrayed me. So give me one reason why I should help you with Mechanics?” Jimin looked at you waiting for your answer, but you seemed embarrassed enough with what he said so he backed of, going back into picking into his plate.

“I’m sorry ok, I didn’t know I hurt you that bad. And I’m sorry I betrayed your confidence. I, I legit thought you were joking around, I mean, who would’ve thought you were a virgin.” You shrugged.

“And why would that be? Huh? Why would I joke around about that?” He looked at you curious, quirking his eyebrows.

“Cause you know, it’s you, you’re… Park Jimin. Hot park jimin, every girl wanted a piece of you, who would’ve thought you were a virgin? I mean I didn’t.” You looked at him as if what you said was obvious.

“So I would’ve told my friend, that I was a virgin because???”

“I thought you wanted to get into my pants, ok? and I told you I was a virgin you said that you were one too, like what the fuck, who says that kind of stuff? Someone who obviously wants to fuck you. Right?” You looked like you were making an obvious statement again.

“You have some serious problems you know that? Have you ever thought I could’ve been feeling the truth? Maybe because I wanted you to believe me? Wanted you to know you’re not alone?”

“Jimin I’m sorry ok? I didn’t think of it that way… sorry.” You look away. “It’s been 2 years, can’t you let it go?”

“I’ve let it go a long time ago, you’re the one who brought it back up. Why did you even come to me anyways? Where’s Taehyung? Aren’t you always with him? Why not ask him to help you with mechanics?” Jimin asked as he stared gathering his belongings.

“Tae is into photography and Art, how the fuck will he help me with physics? You’re the smart one and you know it. Please Jimin I really need your help…” you almost begged.

Jimin sighed for a 10th time probably in this conversation. “I really want to help you, but I don’t have time. I’m all fed up with Chemical Processes, so I can’t. Sorry.” He said getting up and grabbing his tray, walking towars the exit.

You got up desperately and started walking behind him, he ignored you for a few seconds after placing the tray where it belonged, until he turned to face you and asked “What?”

“I know you hate me cause I told your secret, but… do you really want me to end up here another 4 years? Do you? I can’t Jimin, please!”

“Y/N I literally have nothing do to with that, you’re the one who decided to stop hanging out with me and go with the cool kids, and I can’t really do more to help you at this point I don’t have time.” He exhaled while turning around to keep his track, and you kept following him.

“What if I give you somethig in return?” You asked dodging people in your way keeping up with his pace.

“What could it be, that you have that I want enough to take up my precious time?” He asked still walking.

“What if I give you something no one else can have?”

With that you caught his attention.

“What could that be? Money? Your underwear collection?” He laughted it off.

“What if I give you my v card?” Jimin halted abruptly, turning to face You.

“What did you say?”

“Ok not that, I was trying to call for your attention.” Jimin’s heart almost dropped as he sighed. “Wait, you wanted that?” You asked looking into him and for a second you saw hesitation in his eyes before he denied. “You do, you want me to sleep with you don’t you?”

“Don’t be ridiculous, that’s anti ethical. Plus, I haven’t wanted you since our first year, after you betrayed my confidence.” He kept walking, you wonder when will he drop this, but then you realized he said he wanted you, which means he did like you back then.

“Wait ok, ok!” You said stopping in front of him. “What if I make it up to you, what if i… uhm, go out with you a couple times, pay for some dinners, uhm? What you say?” You asked with puppy dog eyes. “Cmon jimin, free food, and nice company. Let me make it up to you, and you help me pass. What u say about that?”

Jimin looked thoughtful for a minute, then he sighed and complied, you jumped and hugged him. “Thank you so much, I promise you I’ll give you everything you want, anything you want it’s on me.”

Jimin sighed again. “Let’s start Saturday at 9am, the sooner the better. You’re a lost cause in Physics.”

“Ok, sure, I’ll be at your place. I’ll even bring those pancakes you love.” You said as you trailed off into the hallway. “Thank you” you shouted.

Jimin looked at you walking away, once again his crush for you had gotten the best of him. “You’re weak” he whispered to himself before heading to class.

Smokey brand Movie Reviews: I’m In Lesbians With You

It occurs to me that i don’t have a proper review of Scott Pilgrim on here. I really should work through the current backlog of films that i still need to watch; Uncut Gems, The Lighthouse, Parasite, Ready or Not, but i f*cking love Scott and his shenanigans so... Scott Pilgrim it is! Considering how much i love this film and the fact that I’m just going to be gushing about it for however long this review is, let’s just get this out of the way immediately: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is an excellent movie and you should go watch it right now!

The Outstanding

Yo, before anything, can i just express how much i adore this f*cking soundtrack? My taste in music is varies wildly but, at it’s core, my heart beats for the Indie and the New Wave and the Post Punk. For this soundtrack to be packed with so much excellent, underground, indie fair? Oh, my goodness! It’s musical sex to me. Shout out to Nigel Godrich. Motherf*cker did the best of jobs on this one!

Even more than that, the way all of this music is integrated in each scene s absolutely brilliant. There’s not one note out of place or out of line. It’s rare that happens, so deftly that i actually recognize it. Usually, it’s all background noise to accentuate whatever scene but i legit took in everything.

While on the subject of music, i want to take a minute to acknowledge the sound design as a whole. Scott Pilgrim is based on a graphic novel, which i also love, so there is a rather kinetic energy that needs to be conveyed. It’s chock full of all the spastic nonsense us Millennials grew up with like Mario token sound effects and obscure cartoon references. Integrating certain sound effects like the random game noises here or there is absolute brilliance. It lends an air of authenticity to this adaption.

While i can gush about all of the audible genius for years, i would be remiss if i didn’t speak on the goddamn eye candy of this film. Holy sh*t is thing gorgeous! And not just the Evil Ex set pieces, even though those are absolute chaotic bad-assery, this entire film is a work of art. It really is. You can frame almost every shot in this thing, it’s that gorgeous.

Speaking of gorgeous, these costumes are amazing. A lot of them are ripped right out of the comic but they’re like, real clothes. Nothing feels cartoony or comic book-ish, it all feels organic to the tone of film and characters therein. Like, i wear the same kind of sh*t Scott wears. It’s all graphic tees and jeans with me, much to the chagrin of my darling missus.

The writing in this flick is absolutely brilliant. Like, seriously, nothing feels out of place, the dialogue feels organic, and the plot is a pretty decent condensing of the graphic novels original six volumes. I have interactions like these with my friends. I legitimately talk like this. Of course, there is a little polish on some of these line but, overall, it’s pretty on point.

All of this standout awesome can be traced back to the vision of it’s director, Edgar Wright. No one believed in this little experiment so he had carte blanche to create whatever he wanted and he did just that. You can tell there was a real love for this material and while not everything from the books made it into the movie, he did an excellent job of capturing the major beats and important aspects with his absolute mad style of movie making.

The cast in this thing is weirdly perfect. All of them. Every one of them. Seriously, it’s like a who’s who of young Hollywood from way back when, almost all of whom have grown into proper A-list talent and i love it! Alison Pill, Anna Kendrick, Jason Schwartzmen, Ellen Wong, Brandon Routh, and Mae Whitman are all excellent in their respective roles. There are, of course, standouts but before i get to them, i just what to acknowledge how great the casting is, overall, in this movie. You can feel the comradery onset and it’s reflected in the fact that there are no weak performances, at all, in this flick. F*ck, dude, there’s even a Thomas Jane and Clifton Collins cameo in this thing that feels absolutely at home!

This film would be nothing without the right person in the lead. Scott Pilgrim is a neuritic, self-centered, anxiety ridden, asshole of person but still lovable in a very dry and sarcastic kind of way. There are very few that can capture that energy so when i found out Michael Cera as cast in the lead, i knew this movie was in good hands. Every movie i have ever seen him in, Cera carries that energy expertly. He is he living embodiment of Scott Pilgrim. Like, this is MCU levels of casting, for real.

The second role you had to nail to make this work was definitely Ramona Flowers. You had a little more leeway with this one but i think they still nailed it with Mary Elizabeth Winstead. I’ve been a fan of hers since way back when she was in Sky High (I actually love that movie SO much) and even further back with The Ring Two, but that’s more a deep cut than anything. Anyway, Mary is perfect as Ramona and one of the best things about this movie.

So the performances of the Evil Exes are spectacular, Particularly Schwartzman’s. His Gideon Graves was just so smarmy and condescending and disingenuous you couldn’t help but hate his guts. Dude was awesome, no doubt, but he was outshined by what Chris Evan was able to create with Lucas Lee. That’s right, Captain America himself was in Scott Pilgrim as the first Evil Ex and he f*cking killed it! I’ve loved Evans for years. Not Another Teen Movie is actual one of my favorites and he was easily the best thing about those first two Fantastic Four films but you can see him shine in this role, even if it was only a few minutes.

It’s no secret i love Brie Larson. I’ve raved about her performances in the past but it was this movie that made me take notice. Her interpretation of Envy Adams was pitch perfect. It’s melodramatic and over-the-top but at the same time, incredibly vulnerable. Natalie has one hell of an arc in the book and it’s a little short-changed in the movie, but Larson makes gold with what she has to work with. Plus, she actually performs the cover to Metric’s Black Sheep. Those are her vocals and i find that to be absolutely dope.

Of course, you can’t talk about Scott Pilgrim without talking about his gay roommate, Wallace Wells. Dude is one of the best characters in the book and is an absolute scene stealer n this film, thanks to the deft hand of Kieran Culkin. It’s hard for me to praise gay character in cinema because cats always right them as caricature but Culkin’s Wells feels real and grounded, none of that Hollywood gay bullsh*t. Dude is a person that just happens to be gay and i love that.

And last but not least, Aubrey Plaza. There’s a little picture of Julie Powers that is the spitting image of Plaza. Like, her casting is as perfect as Scott’s casting. Seriously, she is what Michael Cera is to Pilgrim. It’s rare a cast in a film is so goddamn perfect. Even the MCU has had some missed but literally every one in this film is absolutely prefect and Plaza might be best of all.

Also, all of the LGBT representation. While the movie didn’t capture all of the many, many, sexual presentations, they didn’t shy away from some of the most prominent. Pilgrim’s roommate Wallace Wells, is extra gay and he has a myriad of boyfriends throughout both the book and film. Nothing too graphic, but there are scenes with them in bed and one pretty heavy make-out sessions early in the film. Hell, they even included Ramona’s one female Ex, Roxy Richter, in one of the best Evil Ex fights of the entire movie. Bravo film, bravo.

The Verdict

I said this in the beginning and just in case the previous gushing didn’t give you a clue, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a f*cking great film, man. It stands on it’s own as a wonderful coming of age story but it’s so much more than that. It’s a love story to music. It’s one of the best comic adaptions i have ever seen. It’s an ode to the Millennial coming-of-age journey. It’s a nostalgia bomb for kids my age, who did sh*t like play video games all day then spend all night in coffee shops that had live music and f*cking waffles. It’s an amazing representation, and unique presentation, of those early twenties when you aren’t sure of yourself or your direction or anything and you just want to drift through life for as long as possible. It’s heartbreak and new love and learning about who you are, deep down, not some shallow representation or facade. I love Scott Pilgrim because it tells a great story. It tells MY story. And it does it with a banging ass soundtrack, too.
