#I love OG Cale a LOT and I just think that his character has a lot behind it

OG Choi Han they could never make me hate you cause if some random rich boy was yelling at me and telling me my family deserved to die like a day after it happened and all I wanted was to know how I could get help I’d beat him up too
This plus the added fact that the Harris Village people were the first people to take Choi Han in and take care of him after years and years in the dark forest. Like he’s obviously not going to be mentally stable after all that, and he was so young when everything happened to him like I cannot blame him at all. I don’t think I can ever hate OG Choi Han like ever, he’s flawed, he has problems, but I love him dearly. He deserves the world. This kid who had to fight for his life, was taken away from his family, and in the process had to give up parts of his own humanity to survive, and like went to war two years later, they could never make me hate u OG Choi Han…
Like yeah violence is bad I guess but OG Cale had it coming(saying this as an OG Cale fan, I love him, but he was mean as hell when he was younger!)
If I’m honest, I think they were both in the wrong to an extent. Like OG Cale shouldn’t have said all that no matter the circumstances, and OG Choi Han shouldn’t have beaten him up so much. But u say mean shit and you get hit, that is how it will work when you’re talking to the guy who just saw his entire village get murdered like idkkkk man
I understand where OG Cale was coming from, but he had many issues and while he wasn’t an awful person, he was capable of doing bad things because of his own internalized pain and emotions that he never got to properly process because of his emotionally distant childhood and relationship with his father who should have been there for him more when he was younger.
Okay speaking of his childhood, Deruth isn’t the WORST father in the world but there are a lot of things he could have done better. I think a lot of Deruth’s flaws come from his fear of failure and messing up. He’s scared of doing the wrong thing, and so he sticks to doing what he knows and using what he knows best. That’s why he uses his money, that’s why gift giving is his way of showing affection, he knows that it is one thing he cannot mess up.
The problem is that money and gifts is NOT what OG Cale needed. I think what that guy needed the most was a parent who wasn’t afraid to talk to him, to ask him questions. Not to say that Deruth gave up on OG Cale, but I think in a way he gave up on OG Cale by giving up on himself. Deruth didn’t trust himself to have the capabilities to talk to OG Cale, which is why he never did. It’s because that Deruth was scared, and didn’t trust himself, that he could never face OG Cale
If Deruth was able to trust himself a little more, and pull himself together, I don’t think OG Cale would have turned out the way he did. As a kid, he probably thought the only way he could help his family without relying on anyone(no doubt this whole ‘I have to do it myself’ thing came from the fact that he couldn’t rely on his father when his mom died, and instead was acting as a pillar of support for his father when it should have been the other way around) was to sabotage himself, the only heir. If he was shown to be unfit to be heir, then everyone else would have no choice but to direct their hatred towards him instead of his family.
If Deruth had talked to his son at least ONCE when he was a kid, asking him why he was upset or why he did the things he did, I think OG Cale would have told him. Why? Because he’s a kid!! A kid will obviously want to rely on his father, if he just had one sign telling him that he didn’t have to do it alone I’m 90% sure OG Cale would have said something.
Basically, while Deruth isn’t the worst father, he’s not really a great father either. I think he does do his best, but he has issues with communication lol
OG Cale and OG Choi Han are both complex characters and had their own reasons to behave the way they did. The thing is with people is that they’re complicated and have layers, so the situation with them would have layers behind it as well with multiple co-existing truths and stuff
#guys I’m a big fan of Choi Han#and I get sad when people bring up this scene and all the blame is on him#like okay he was wrong but if YOU saw your entire family dead and some random rich boy started yelling abt how their lives were worthless#you’d be mad too no?#like his feelinsg were totally justified cause OG Cale was REALLY mean in that scene#‘their lives are worth less than the bottle in my hand’ OHHHHH OKAY OG CALE THATS ENOUGH THATS ENOUGHHHH#I love OG Cale but u have to admit he wasn’t very nice when he was younger#like the statements ‘he had his reasons’ ‘being trash was an act’ ‘he wasn’t a bad person’ ‘but he did say bad things’ can co exist#yes being trash was an act but he is ALSO capable of saying mean things and things that are wrong#LIKE TELLING THE GUY WHO JUST GOT HIS FAMILY MURDERED THAT THEIR LIVES WERE WORTHLESS#HE WAS NOT INNOCENT FOR THAT#Younger OG Cale is not a black and white character#and neither is older OG Cale but this post isn’t abt him#okay I’m gonna bring up someone who isn’t from TCF#but take Eunyung Baek from no home as an example okay#eunyung did bad things and was a bad person because of his childhood right#the reasons to being a bad person do not take away the bad things he did#but just cause he did bad things and was capable of them did not mean he could not change#I love OG Cale a LOT and I just think that his character has a lot behind it#Older OG Cale is obviously very different from his younger self#years and years of war and tragedy have matured him and like he’s not the same person he was anymore#okay back to Choi Han I love that guy I will defend him with my life#beating up people is wrong yeah but with the circumstances I’d say OG Cale had it coming#like okay it would be different if it was unprovoked but it was very much provoked#I swear I love OG Cale I just think he was very wrong for that#not to say he can’t change or isn’t capable of change he definitely is#idk I guess my point is that OG Cale was wrong but he changed as a person#and OG Choi Han was wrong for beating him up so much but it wasn’t unjustifiable#tcf#lcf

Let me drag you into hell named “Trash of the Count’s Family” with me...
So, I have found a new interesting webnovel lately (Action, Comedy, and Fantasy genres) and it’s driving me crazy, lol. I haven’t finished all of it yet, but I’m unashamed to admit I never cared for spoilers, and I already checked out the ending and all major plot points. I’d like to recommend it to everyone, even though the size of it might frighten even the most devoted fantasy lovers.
It’s worth it, though, I promise! I promise! ;_;
Here are my reasons (without Spoilers):
1. Summary:
In "Trash of the Count's Family" (or “Lout of the Count's Family" depending on translation), the main character - originally Korean named Kim Rok Soo (KRS) - suddenly transmigrates into Cale Henituse, a minor villain in the beginning of a fantasy novel (in-story, not a real book) that KRS was reading, named "Birth of a Hero". This red-haired character starts to use the name Cale from that point. The Original-Cale (OG Cale) was a supposedly a useless "trash" alcoholic son of a very rich Count. KRS-Cale wants to avoid getting beat up by the protagonist from "Birth of a Hero" named Choi Han (CH), who's also Korean - unlike KRS he kept his original body though (and CH doesn't know his life is a novel). As the result, Cale gets involved with CH and the plot, despite the fact that all he wants to do is live a painless, peaceful life - his "slacker life". As the result he becomes the main hero, even though he's quite oblivious to the fact, insisting that people won't remember him in the long run and that CH and others will take the spotlight eventually. Meanwhile, CH and the rest of Cale's crew become very loyal to him and don't mind not being the main heroes at all, much to Cale's dismay.
2. About the Main Character: Cale does a lot of shady things to reach his peaceful future, but most characters agree that he is ultimately the good guy, since he's doing everything he can to make sure no innocent people get hurt. The comedy comes from his obliviousness to how the others percieve him, insisting he's "trash" even tough everybody calls him a hero, the way he shamelessly scams people for money, robs places of hidden treasures and magic powers like a thief from a DND game, and trolls the bad guys by wearing their uniforms. Oh, and he also throws up blood a lot from overusing his powers, so gore warning, I guess...? (He has recovery powers, so he's juuust fine! [Cue the panic of his loving family as he faints])
(A running joke is that Cale's weak, but that's not entirely true. His crew calls him that, since they're all basically the strongest people on the continent, and he's the weakest member physically. But Cale is extremely OP on his own, and hardly a damsel in distress. He literally leads armies and is quite fearless, despite not liking pain and wanting to just live comfortably. As a protagonist, he is a very decent one, despite having some major weaknesses - his stamina being the biggest one.)
3. About the Story: The first 100 chapters or so are a bit slow. Cale explores a bit, finds his crew members, gains his powers, plans for the future war. I haven't read everything myself, but the story gains significant momentum by chapter 200, when the fighting really begins. Everything is a build-up to a huge war arch that I think doesn't really stop for at least the next 150. The fights are really interesting. And the interactions between the characters are extremely fun, and all of them are very unique and interesting as well. The plot is very tightly written and quite engaging.
4. About the (non-existent) Romance: What I especially like is that there is basically no romance: Cale is pretty much uninterested in anything except Money and his Slacker Life (an MC who is not a pervert??? What a shocker!!!), but gains a huge family throughout the the story. There are kittens, dragons, princes, mages, assassins, humans, elves, beast people et cetera. Each race has typical fantasy characteristics, but they're all very "human". Even the villains are well fleshed-out and interesting. Most characters have platonic relationships with each other, and there is very little romantic subplots, is any at all. (Also, love all the female characters. Even though most of the cast is male, the women present in the story are not sex icons written for fanservice - just how rare is that!?)
5. About the Writing: While it's not perfect, I think the writing is pretty good. Things go slow at first, then extremely fast and epic. Cale's perspective on things is usually hilarious. The other characters usually either fear him or love him, and as a reader you can tell why - he is no Mary Sue. Cale uses his knowledge of the events of the first 5 volumes of "Birth of a Hero" to his full advantage. He helps quite a lot of people, and ruins the plans of a lot of villains. He's a good person yet a scammer, generous yet very greedy, oblivious yet extremely charismatic - he is a complex, interesting character and VERY fun to read about.
6. About the Length: ...It's almost 800 chapters. And it's just part 1. No, I am not joking. It's half the size of the entire Lord of the Rings series. Truly, the size of this story is monstrous - however! That's because the author really cares about fleshing out this big, amazing world they had created and the characters. While it uses a lot of common tropes and cliches, they are mostly cliches done right. I've heard some complaints about how some people get annoyed by the "mental dialogues" Cale has with other characters, but personally I've enjoyed them. They're funny. Even though I couldn't finish the whole thing yet, I will definitely do it one day. Still, I deeply pity the current manga series (about 70 chapters at this point - barely 1/15 of the story complete), or any possible future anime adaptations (don't jump at me with names, I KNOW this is Korean and they use different names for comics and cartoons, okay??) - because that'll be at least "Naruto" size of a story to adapt, if not "One Piece" once it's finished, and that's... insane. I don't they can do it without a global following fanbase. While the story would deserve it, I doubt that will happen any time soon. IF they manage to do it, though? Believe me - it will be some of the most entertaining, epic stuff ever. I'll be cheering them on. This is first Korean stuff I've ever read, but it's really good.
7. Conclusion: I say it's worth checking out for anyone, despite how long it is. Even though this ~770 chapters-long monster of a novel might seem daunting, I personally started get invested already about chapter 20 - since I am a big dragon fan. The dragon lore alone in this story is something really incredible. Any fantasy fan will enjoy it. Though it is "just part 1", it is a very satisying story with a neat conclusion. Laugh with me as Cale faints from power overuse, and the other characters fret around him force-feeding him apple pie while he insists he's fine. It's cute, it's hilarious, it's epic, and it's very interesting.

hey sorry if youve already mentioned reading this before and i havent seen it yet but have you read trash of the count's family? it has that wholesome found family vibe that i really liked about orv
also what would u think of a crossover between them?
Yeah I read it last summer!
Well, I know its still currently updating but the last thing I read was (SPOILER FOR TRASH OF THE COUNT'S FAMILY)
when they started talking about OG Cale's mom and i haven't had the chance to get back to it. Like I said in the last ask I'm into drama/romance rn and TCF is very firmly like aromantic in my opinion which I really appreciate about it. Like you said, the similarity with ORV is that Cale is like: I'm here to build and maintain a found family, not fuck around. Really scratches my face-slapping/action itch when I have it.
I've never really read fic about it tho, I think that's mainly because most fic I see advertised in the tag is ship fic with Cale getting some and I just so happen to think he's an ace/aro king, comes down to personal preference. I think there's a lot of potential for people to take the TCF characters and make a narrative about how platonic love can be inherently queer and subversive, because in so many cases the one thing that saves the characters from their fates in the original novel is Cale just... knowing about them and caring that they continue to exist, which is sweet.
Then like I said before most of the x-over stuff I like is characterxsetting swaps, not character-character meet-cutes. I think the main difference of ORV characters in the TCF setting from OG TCF is that KDJ as Cale would be just slightly more of a loser, okay? So like they both have these elements of "I know this story so I can seem cool and OP at the start as I slowly start making more and more sacrifices to maintain that image." But I think that Cale's absolutely hilarious POV that's slowly revealed of "actually I'm an apocalypse vet who read one book ever on his day off to try to keep the PTSD at bay" is a REALLY different perspective from Mr. Kim Reader who is obsessed with Ways of Survival and creates the universe by writing self-insert fanfiction. There's also the "I'm just here to slack off because I already lived a life full of trauma and strife" vs the "I've been showing a suicidal lack of care towards myself and don't believe I have a future because I already lived a life full of trauma and strife." Then, critically, I think that both the character of KRS and KDJ are getting something from their new world that they couldn't get in their old one, bonds with other people. ORV, however, in contrast to TCF, asks the question "Am I using these people for my own gains? Is saving them really something they should be grateful to me for? Aren't I the same guy who is alone and deserves to die?" and Cale is just like "I saved you, you're gonna live in my house now, I won't emotionally confront the impact that caring for you has had on my life unless its in a trial of life and death, k thanx bye."
Okay okay, this got away from me... basically what I'm saying is that it's hard to do 1 to 1 roleswaps with these characters, so I think the crossover setting would be a bit complicated.
Luckily, ORV as a narrative is literally constructed to make any crossover narrative ever completely possible. I would like take a point in time in the cannon of ORV, right after the divorce arc where YJH found out he was in a book and then they were put into like a scenario based around a different world (Kaiznex arc or however its spelled idk) and then have those roles be the world of TCF. So like KDJ wakes up as Cale and YJH wakes up as Choi Han and KDJ has to explain the setting to YJH and its like...
KDJ: OH haha this must be one of those books were a regular guy ends up as a character and knows everything about the protagonist so he helps him and...
YJH: ...
KDJ: ...
And then they just keep going, so I know they weren't in the kaizer permanente or whatever but imagine: biyoo as Raon, SYS and LGY as On and Hong, obvi very cute. And then I literally cannot be arsed to recall if there are any couples in TCF so IDK where JHW or LHS would end up that would have the same emotional resonance as the whole two palace people who are only kept sane by each other thing.
and I think HSY should be the white star AND also Choi Han's ancestor who wrote the cryptic books okay next question.
KRS in ORV setting would honestly be just like "oh not this fucking shit again." Literally hanging on by a thread in this universe where he read a book that he thought was a poor fictional history written by someone who wasn't there about "skills" from "stars" instead of having just plain ability users. I think if Choi Han were a regressor, it would be most fun if Cale didn't know and only read the first part where he messed everything up in 3rd and was like I can fix that and Choi Han is like Who?? Is??? this guy??? and then Alberu should be the author because him and Cale are funny like HSY and KDJ are funny. Alberu stealing jobs from women by being a funny bitch smh... Honestly I think that TCF characters in an ORV-like setting is sort of already answered by the Cale goes back in time in KRS's life thing and fixes stuff for them then has to go home bc he's white now.
OK. those are just my thoughts tho its been a while since i read tcf so idk how accurate that is, judge for yourself

So to preface this for anyone new, I have.... a LOT of AUs for my characters. Traditionally speaking, I give them all nicknames or completely different names just so it's a little more clear which one I'm talking about. The android version of Rockwell in this instance being the original-- and the one my screen name references, (who still needs his own sheet but it's going to be a lot bigger). In this case though, this particular AU was... well, the first one I ever made. So the original name really just, stuck, now that it's been like 4-5 years. Whoops..? This was basically a fantasy AU where he was a human who fought monsters that threatened people, pretty straight forward. Eventually he got a vampire boyfriend (MZ) who we named Miden for this run. VH AU = Vampire Hunter AU-- since Rockwell... also sometimes fought vampires before he met Miden. There are a lot of tensions between sentient races at this point in the world's history so you can imagine their relationship is... awkward, to say the least. Fast forward several years and we're still working on their story, adding lore, and it even has a sort of branching/alternate path due to some time travel magic shenanigans-- whoops x2? It also took me THIS LONG to make his reference and that's a total disservice to how much I love him (then again Vox, OG Rockwell, and Cale are all still waiting for theirs so...), but I tried some new stuff with this one! I've been wanting to include alternate outfits for either casual use, or story specific events depending on the character-- yes I spend that much time thinking about them. Chibis are an excellent way to do that since they're smaller and take up less space, so you will see more of that in the future! As for Rockwell himself, he can be hotblooded at times, but he's a real sweetheart when you get to know him. He and twin brother Caleb come from a long line of Hunters. It's basically all their family does, so training started at a pretty young age for them. While they're both vastly knowledgeable about non-humans and magic in general, they have very different approaches to combat, with Rock preferring weapons, and Cale having basically classed into a mage. While Rockwell can use magic, the execution is often heavily linked to the caster's emotions, which can be really volatile if one isn't cautious. Rockwell is also anemic which has proved to be a double edged sword when dealing with supernatural entities. On the one hand no one wants to eat him, on the other, a lack of self care gets him into trouble more often than he'd like to admit.   I did NOT include any weapon designs on this sheet purely because they break and get traded out so often I didn't feel the need to create a default. He doesn't really have a signature or trademark weapon, just fighting styles and preferences (two light swords over a heavier two-handed blade, cross bow over bow, etc). We've talked about how we want to share their story with everyone but haven't quite decided the best format yet, so if you have questions feel free to ask <:
