SERENDIPITY ✦ DR3
Tumblr media
“Serendipity is an unexpected and very lucky finding, that is, a coincidence that fills us with happiness. Serendipity in love implies the feeling that the universe conspires in our favor, bringing that special person into our lives at the right time and oh boy, did the universe send her everything she ever needed in the form of a 5'10" man with a built-in accent, a love for Tim Tams, adrenaline-fueled spirit and a smile that could light up a whole town.”

digging out the eah content i created in a frenzy during last year’s summer of obsession part 1: my personal sapphic multishipping guide (created to explain to my friends which of these dolls i think should hold hands)
(more in-depth discussion of the ships below the cut)
the polycule that will take over ever after
kitty/lizzie; kitty/maddie; maddie/lizzie
self-explanatory. frequently purchased together do not separate. bonus shoutout to maddie canonically giving kitty a little kissie on the cheek and getting off scot-free in the books though. a wonderlandiful world was a banquet to me
cedar protection squad
once again a wonderlandiful world and once upon a time i owe you my life. kitty ESP being so adamant abt not giving a shit then turning around and fucking up those boys who were mean to cedar...... i love friendship
kitty/cerise
also self-explanatory. she was a catgirl she was a wolfgirl can i make it anymore obvious. also doribuki’s phenomenal fake dating fanfic....... transformative foundational transcendental
cerise/raven
YOU MUST UNDERSTAND. i entered eah a rapple shipper and exited the book series ready to burn at the stake for cerise/raven. book two was SO MUCH. it had everything. raven befriending cerise despite her attempts to isolate herself. texting in class. winking at each other. raven meeting the parents and hearing embarrassing baby cerise stories. cerise putting it all on the line to save raven. i’m ambivalent about shadow high but cerise gets literally one (1) mention and it’s in raven’s internal monologue wherein she equates cerise’s hood w feelings of warmth and safety. like how was that in any way necessary. i rest my case
raven & maddie
self-explanatory as well. dabesties. the ride or dies. it means so much to me that raven always has a friend in maddie no matter how many clowns and jokers (derogatory) treat her like the antichrist. maddie the character ever
raven/apple
WHAT IT SAYS ON THE TIN. the gelphie dynamic is a classic and i am EXTREMELY vulnerable to it. they are THE ship and i will pay my respects to the end of time. i am a big fan of how they trade their roles throughout the franchise and how rich the drama and history are between them. it’s pure fucking poetry.
raven/darling
TBH. a serve. the only thing juicier than evil queen/damsel in distress is evil queen/princess charming. big big fan of darling giving raven the five star princess treatment after a lifetime of being feared and shunned and vilified. equally big fan of raven’s momentous act of rebellion giving darling the courage to be true to herself. ALSO. the absolute archetype-subversion slay of the Pure-Hearted Hero(TM) confronting the Mistress of Evil(TM) and dropping their sword. looking through the smoke and mirrors and the will of Fate itself to see the girl who has wanted nothing but to be kind beneath. swearing their heart and soul and sword to the one true good they have found. picture it. i can almost see the 100-word drabble
raven/apple/darling
now THIS is just THE fairytale couple. the evil queen, the damsel in distress and the princess charming ALL holding hands and riding off into the sunset together. dappling on its own doesn’t do it for me but raven in the mix just makes everything gel perfectly. she’s the tomato in the ratatouille the cornstarch in the spring roll water, etc etc
darling/holly
this is one of those ships where i read a really convincing fic and the more i thought of it the more it just made sense. like they'd read swashbucklers and tales of courtly love together. holly would 100% write a darling placeholder in her self-insert romance fanfic pre-relationship as a way to express her feelings. darling would 100% find out and gently pull her out of the pit of sheer mortification she drilled into the ground to escape. also the height difference is a thing of beauty
safe from the polycule
duchess/poppy
they have one singular episode to their name and it was enough. it was Everything. the dynamic you can extrapolate from that one single interaction is so incredibly appealing to me. duchess’s bitchiness belied by her palpable air of vulnerability coming up against poppy’s spine of steel tempered by her skill in gaining perspective. poppy can challenge duchess into being a better person and duchess can be poppy’s character flaw like idk she just has shit taste in women that was the price she had to pay to be moisturized and unbothered by destiny. i just think they have the potential to be the unexpected, inexplicable power couple of eah
briar/faybelle
do i even need to say anything they had a whole movie to make their case. they’re rapple if rapple got their shit together before armageddon, with the bonus of a potential curse-breaking true love’s kiss for the fanfic authors to thrash between their teeth. truly unlimited. also unlike rapple where raven is 100% against being a villain and therefore it’s apple who has to do the mental gymnastics to open herself to the possibility of a relationship w raven, faybelle is just chomping at the bit to make her momma proud and presents a compelling perspective for the whole “falling in love w your fated nemesis” thing
blondie/cupid
they are icons, they are legends, and they ARE the moment. these two are so chaotic individually, what with blondie’s criminal skillset and habit of menacing innocent woodland creatures and cupid’s matchmaking powers combined w her shitty aim, that putting them together can only mean good things. there’s this whole element of their shared passion as public figures who at their best seek the truth and guide others through matters of the heart respectively that’s always interesting as a point of irony/obstacle when they start catching feelings and have to decide what to do with them. their joint youtuber/podcaster slay can level nations

My Thoughts on Gotham
My mom and I finished watching Gotham on December 29th, and this analysis has been sitting in google docs since then. Some of this is a bit incoherent, some of it I wrote as I was watching, and some of it I wrote after finishing the entire show. So here it is. 2,000 words or so of rambling about Gotham.
My thoughts on the show as a whole: Gotham changed my opinion on a lot of Batman’s villains. I used to be indifferent towards Penguin, now I love him. I used to hate Firefly, now I love her. While there were one or two decisions that I disagreed with, the portrayal of these characters was satisfying and the tone of the show as a whole was refreshing. The writing was good for the most part, however there are issues with sexism and homophobia that I personally noticed.
And now I’m going season by season cause I’m a nerd.
Season One
Season one is a bit of a mixed bag for me. It seemed to me that the show writers and the younger actors were still trying to find their footing and decide what kind of world their Gotham was. Some episodes are slow, but overall it’s intriguing and I was invested after a couple of episodes.
The pilot has a lot of moving parts and it still works. They did a good job of intertwining all of these characters before starting them all on their own paths.
I can’t imagine anyone else playing these roles. I am really happy with the casting choices for this show. Jim Gordon, Harvey Bullock, and Bruce Wayne especially.
Fish Mooney is an interesting but welcome edition! To be honest, the first time my mom and I tried to watch Gotham, we hated her. The second time around, however, I LOVED her and her role in the rise of Penguin.
Having Edward Nygma start at the GCPD was a really cool idea! I think they executed his descent into madness perfectly. I wanted Ed to prevail and to be a goodman just as much as I wanted to see the Riddler emerge.
Speaking of the GCPD, the corruption and the conflict within the precinct is very believable and compelling. It’s easy to believe that Jim Gordon is a young and optimistic detective who believes wholeheartedly in doing good. I also appreciate the fact that Jim Gordon doesn’t lose that drive for good throughout the show. I also don’t find it too cheesy, even if it’s a common trope.
The Batman universe is huge so I was expecting references and easter eggs at every turn, and I was half right. There's plenty of references and cameos but they work and they aren’t essential to the plot which helps casual fans keep up with the story.
A lot of seeds are planted during this first season, and it’s rewarding to see them pay off. I don’t feel as if the first season suffers from the thing that a lot of movies do where they are clearly trailers for the next part in the franchise.
I think my favorite episode of this season is episode 20 “Under the Knife.” The stakes are high and the story line with the Ogre is definitely unexpected and horrifying but in the best way. Also Ed kills Dougherty and it’s very satisfying.
Season Two
Rise/Wrath of the Villains!
Theo Galavan and Hugo Strange were the big bads of this season and I think they were written and acted very well.
Something I’ve noticed about some of the villains on this show and their interactions with children and Bruce in particular is that they’re... unsettling. I suppose that’s intentional and I definitely think it makes some of the villains more intimidating, but it’s really creepy. There are a lot of adults that are preying on Bruce’s innocence in this show.
Theo Galavan was not my favorite. He was intimidating for a bit, but I kinda grew bored of him. I did enjoy the nod to Azrael.
Hugo Strange! I was kinda indifferent to him when playing Arkham City but I enjoy him in this show! Loved when he showed up again in subsequent seasons and you immediately knew some Fucked Shit was happening.
So Mr. Freeze. I’m not too sure how I feel about Gotham’s take on this story. The casting is solid, but killing Nora? Not the move. Actually very angry about that to be honest. The Mr. Freeze episode could’ve been so much more compelling and emotional but instead it was a way to move Lee and Jim’s relationship forward :(
They managed to make Firefly not annoying, but I only found Firefly annoying before because of that stupid boss fight in Arkham Origins. But I liked Bridget.
Penguin and Nygma’s relationship is very fun in this season! More on them later, but at least in season two it’s very enjoyable to watch them learn to trust each other. My mom and I adored their story line.
I LOVE Nygma’s character arc in this season. His interactions with Gordon are some of my favorite bits from this season. They are very rewatchable and I find their relationship to be one of the more intriguing ones in the show.
Overall season 2 was decent. Some of the villains were forgettable, but the relationship arcs and character arcs that were compelling kept me interested.
Episode 15, Mad Grey Dawn, was one of my favorites this season. Seeing the Nygma v Gordon thing play out was so so so fun. I really loved being able to follow Nygma’s logic and feel Gordon’s frustration at being framed.
Season Three
Mad City/Heroes Rise!
There’s A LOT I have to say about season 3. I liked it. There’s a couple of big issues I have with season 3, but overall it was compelling and I enjoyed it.
While I’m not usually one for the “this character has a darkness inside of them” trope, I really didn’t mind it with Gordon. I thought it was believable and interesting enough to be engaging. bounty hunter Gordon was pretty fun, too. And hot. Anyway.
The Mad Hatter v Jim Gordon stuff is intense. Episode 6 where Gordon is forced to choose between Valerie and Lee is where the “dark side” trope lost me a little but I do like that they make a point to have Gordon always make his way back to the light. Valerie’s exit felt very rushed and sudden? I don’t know if the actress was written off for some reason, but it felt very weird.
So. Penguin and Nygma. I don’t know if I would necessarily call it queer-baiting, but it definitely doesn’t sit right with me. Here’s the thing about Gotham’s queer representation: it’s not good, but it’s not bad. There is 100% an issue with making all of your queer characters villains. And there’s a HUGE issue with having Barbara’s attraction to women only be present when she’s a) acting as an antagonist to Gordon’s work at the GCPD (Montoya in season one) or b) on the side of the antagonist and framed as crazy (Tabitha in season two). Also, notice how in season five she’s “sane” when she’s with Gordon. It’s homophobia luv.
However, in the case of Penguin and Nygma, the added layer of Penguin’s love for Nygma makes their arc a little more interesting and compelling (there’s still an issue with queer love being framed as toxic and obsessive in this show, but if I don’t stop talking about that this post will be miles long).
The Ivy thing is certainly a new plot device, but I don’t hate it. Took a bit to get used to, but older Ivy makes sense and to be honest, I wasn’t a huge fan of child Ivy. Not that her character was bad, but I personally found her a tad annoying.
SEASON 3 EPISODE 14. THE GENTLE ART OF MAKING ENEMIES. I HAVE A LOT TO SAY ABOUT THIS. Bruce’s character development in this episode made me extremely happy. I haven’t talked a lot about Jerome-Joker yet, but I really like him. Joker is one of those characters you can take a lot of liberties with and it can either really work or really suck (looking at you Jared Leto). Gotham’s version of Joker, while a bit rushed, is a good fucking Joker.
The reason why I like s3e14 so much is THIS is what the Joker vs Batman relationship is about. This is why they are perfect foils. Batman always has a reason, a method. Motivation and a cause. He believes in Gotham and he believes that EVERYONE has the capacity for good. Joker does things just for the hell of it (i.e. kidnapping Bruce). His point is anarchy and chaos. His point is that everyone has darkness and that they are “one bad day” away from giving into that darkness (subtle nods to The Killing Joke, very nice). This is illustrated SO beautifully in this episode. However, I do see an issue down the line of Joker knowing who Batman is instantly, but I digress.
The birth of Riddler! The development of Penguin and Riddler’s animosity! mwah!
Also. Bruce standing above Gotham in an early version of the suit. There’s no ears or cape but my mom and I were VERY excited. I felt so giddy.
Bruce’s vow not to kill was beautifully framed, props to the DP on that one. It felt nice to hear a live action version of Bruce Wayne say that. (Note from the future: yes he breaks it. Sorta. I’m mad about it, but I explain my feelings in depth later).
Season Four
A Dark Knight!
Alright. Season 4. To be honest, it took me a while to warm up to this one.
Scarecrow. Love his costume. Love his escape. Scarecrow is one of my favorites because he’s creepy and cool and terrifying. Well done. The episode where Jim goes after him is really brutal. He goes there alone, not even Harvey by his side, and he is forced to stare his biggest fear in the face. I loved it!
The Pax Penguina. I’m easily won over by references to old literature and history. This show has made me actually like Penguin. I used to find him annoying and didn’t understand why he was people’s favorite, but this show has proved him to be a competent and cunning villain. I love to hate him. It’s fun seeing him at the top of Gotham.
Riddler’s escape and Nygma’s return. His friendship with Lee and Grundy (Grundy!!). Ed and Lee was certainly an interesting choice. I didn’t hate it, it just seemed really odd. I enjoyed Lee’s rise to power though!
Sofia Falcone. Not really a fan tbh. Didn’t trust her from the start and it was SO satisfying to see her get shot in the head. Talk about a ruthless mastermind. To be fair, I did love to hate her in the beginning, but then she kinda got on my nerves? The actress that played her was really good though!
Captain James Gordon. Yessir. What a legend. One step closer to Commissioner. But also ouchie he had to go behind Harvey’s back. That subplot hurt so good.
Professor Pyg is. A lot. Gotham is a mature show, but it’s hard to like Pyg even as a villain. He’s unsettling and his episodes are a bit too much. I tolerated him but it just got to be gratuitous. I will say that I am relieved that they weren’t heavy handed on the cross-dressing thing. Would prefer not to see that played for a joke anymore, and this show does not need to vilify queerness more than it has.
Jerome and Jeremiah! ahhhhh!!! What wonderful interpretations of the Joker! Jerome was great, but I think I’m partial to Jeremiah. Maybe because his costume looks so much like the Joker from the animated series and Mark Hamill will always be my Joker. Either way, I LOVED their story line in season 4.
Kinda love Barbara being involved in the League. Very sexy of her. Also very sexy of her to not be dead.
Alright. Here we go. Ra’s Al Ghul and Bruce Wayne. I have mixed feelings about this. So Bruce kills. Technically he’s not Batman yet, and obviously Ra’s didn’t stay dead, but he already took the oath. I have a hard time staying with any adaptation that makes their Batman a killer, but this one wasn’t awful? And then technically Barbara uses Bruce’s hands to kill Ra’s in the finale. I’m upset that they went with a “what if Batman kills” story line in the first place, but the resolution wasn’t too terrible.
Those last three episodes of season 4. Wow. My mom and I couldn’t stop watching. The nods to The Killing Joke were cool but not too on the nose. The stakes felt high and I was so deeply invested because this story line in particular was very well crafted and planned out and it definitely shows. There’s so many loose ends at this finale, and somehow it works and you still have hope. But holy shit, those bridges coming down, the utter panic and confusion as you’re wondering “is X person okay? what happened to X?” wonderful, chefs kiss.
Season Five
Legend of the Dark Knight!
Oh gosh. I have so much I want to say, but I don’t know how to put it into words. I loved this season. I loved the post apocalyptic vibes of Gotham. Loved the rise of the villains into the people who will one day face Batman. Loved Gordon’s leadership and rise to Commissioner. There’s a few things I have issues with this season, but I’m just so in love with that finale. What a beautiful send off.
I loved how the finale was crafted, how we didn’t see the full Batman suit till the end. I did, in fact, cry when that thing was revealed. The score was beautiful. It felt so much like an episode of The Animated Series, yet so unlike any other piece of Batman media. It was so refreshing to have everything wrapped up nicely, so refreshing to have hope and satisfaction in a finale.
Overall, this version of Gotham City feels like a living, breathing thing that is lived in and flawed. It is wonderful. The set designers did wonderfully and it feels so timeless in the way that the Animated Series did as well. I think that’s part of the reason why I loved this show so much. It made me feel the same way that the Animated Series did.
I know I’ve missed a lot of details and plot lines, so if for some reason you are interested in my thoughts on a particular thing in this show, my inbox is open!!

I’ve been tagged to do a writing recap by @positivelyamazonian (and @luluvonv but I didn’t see that post nor the notification because tumblr hates me and suffering is the essence of my existence) Now, I’ve not read too much lately, as I’ve struggled find books that interest me, and because I just can’t focus on them, even ones I love)
BTW: imma go with past year as if I just did this year, I’d be limited to the Six of Crows duology.
Best book you read so far this year
I’d have to say The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan. The final book in the original Percy Jackson & the Olympians series. This book was a ride. The tension of this book was so great I had to put it down every few minutes just to stave off an actual heart attack. I could feel my heart being crushed and torn inside me chest it was great. I was panting and hyperventilating the whole time, I’ve never had a book do that to me. Like, if you watch any of the battle episodes from Game of Thrones, the entire book is that and it is just marvelous. I knew that Percy and Annabeth and Grover would live, was pretty sure Nico would too, but the other campers I didn’t and when any of them died, and mind you all the campers are kids, Percy is like, 14 or 15 in this book, Luke Castellan was the oldest of all the campers and if I remember he was 23 in this book, the rest are children. And each time they died, and often in not pretty ways, my heart would just shatter for these poor innocent children. The plot is great so I won’t spoil any more of it, but yeah, best book I’ve read in the past year, probably the best I’ve read ever. If you read anything I write about in this post, read the first PJO series, because I cannot say enough how incredible this book is.
Worst book you read so far this year
Hhhmmmmm… I’d say The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. I’d heard such good things about Sanderson but good gods did I not like this book. The biggest issue I had with it was a lack of quality time with any characters. The book opened with an assassin character, but I spent most of the chapter with him, trying to learn what the fuck he was talking about, what the names were tied to and how his magic worked. I didn’t start getting into him until the end of his chapter. But then, the next chapter is from a completely different characters perspective, in a completely different place at a completely different time. Now this new POV character, is like 15, a novice soldier on a battlefield, so I ofc feel sorry for him and want to hold him and protect him so OKAY! I have a character I can care about, great. Then the battle happens and it’s okay, tbh ASoIaF and TLO kinda ruined battles for me. Then the battle goes awful the kid gets injured, then the battle goes well, and he’s at a medical tent when a surprise army fall upon them. So now I’m thinking “Oh gosh, did he live?” but now we’re stuck with a person who I think was mentioned in the prev. chapter, but he’s a complete asshat so now I’m wondering if the one character I liked and cared about is alive. He died and so did my patience with this book. In A Song of Ice and Fire, and The Heroes of Olympus, Martin and Riordan introduced multiple POV characters at once by having them all in the same place. If you ask me, that’s how you should introduce multiple POV characters, because in that way, even if you only like one of the characters, you still get that character, just form someone else’s perspective. It keeps you from having to repeatedly shift gears, which is the last thing you want at the beginning of your novel if you ask me.
In addition, I had an issue with him using names or words without explaining the meaning of them. He’d talk about a certain ethnic group, and say they’re from this place, but then I’d look on his map, and find no such place. Then we only get a slight description, of their place in society, but I don’t know anything about that society, so that place is without a reference point. He also used the names “lighteye” and “darkeye” but didn’t explain upfront what those descriptors mean, so I’m sitting here trying to ask what that means, but not getting anything. However, they are clearly described as rather important traits in the story, but I don’t think you should introduce such consequential, important parts of your world, and then not explain them. At least, not without good reason.
Completed any series?
Yep, last fall I just slammed through Percy Jackson & the Olympians and its sequel series, The Heroes of Olympus, both by Rick Riordan again. I also read through in 2018 I believe, Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows duology. Loved all three to death.
Anticipated read for the second half of the year?
Nothing in particular. I checked out the first Mistborn book by Brandon Sanderson (hopefully it’s better the Way of Kings), I’ve also though about reading through some history books or something, to see if those catch my interest.
A book that disappointed you
I’d say The Hidden Oracle, or just all of the Trials of Apollo series by Rick Riordan. I’ve only been able to read through The Hidden Oracle, and that was really just because of Nico and Will. Nico is easily my favorite book character (sorry to my former first place, Bran Stark) and his relationship with Will is so fucking cute and funny I just adore every second of it. However, making Apollo, the actual god, Apollo, the main character was a really stupid idea. The Olympians are by and large the most vain, sadistic, self-centered deities I’ve ever heard of, and making one of them his protagonist was just stupid; those aren’t likable traits, and a lot of the times, it seems like the inflated ego of Apollo is played more for laughs than as an actual character flaw. In addition the other main character, Meg, I find to also be rather annoying. A bratty little kid. No thanks.
I tried to read the second book, The Dark Prophecy, but I just couldn’t. The story left Camp Half-Blood, and thus, Nico and Will aren’t there. Instead we get Leo and Calypso. I never really cared for Calypso, and often found her just kind of meh... and since she hates Apollo, and the book is from Apollo’s perspective, she’s either mean and angry, or just really bland. Regarding Leo, I liked Leo, but, his character arc got resolved in The Blood of Olympus from the previous series (The Heroes of Olympus); he’s learned to fully accept his pyro-kinesis and to stop blaming himself for his mom’s death. Other than that however, Leo’s other defining characteristic is him being a joker. Constantly cracking jokes, and being an all around goofball, and a bit of a ladies boy, but all of that has been dulled quite a bit from the previous series. He’s grumpy, serious, and in a relationship with Calypso, and just lacking in the charm he had from the previous series.
I don’t know if I’ll just try and power through it in the future, because I’m sure Will and Nico will be back towards the end of the series, and because a... cataclysmic event happened in the latest book (the third i think) and... imma have to read that... but... I don’t know.
How many books for have read so far this year?
???? IDK!?!? 13?
A book that made you laugh
... Every book by Rick Riordan has made me laugh. Sometimes the normal wheezing i do, sometimes and actual guffaw, and sometimes I’m having to lie down and contain myself before I die from laughter.
Estimated read count for the year?
Don’t know, don’t care, not like I’m getting paid for it.

Look, I know I said I was going to have to take a break from this site to focus on school or whatever, but since Gotham’s final episode is on tonight, I felt as though I wanted to get all of this off my chest. This may or may not be pretty long, so all of my thoughts are under the cut.
Gotham is pretty much the reason why I joined the DC fandom in the first place. It may seem pretty hard to believe, but it’s most definitely true.
I was watching Shameless at the time (as I’m sure a lot of people who joined the fandom at the time were as well), and about a week or so before Cameron’s first episode came on, I saw vids/gifs of what he looked like on the show, and it looked creepy as shit to me (almost like I’m watching a live-action version of the goddamn Chucky doll or something), so then I was like, “okay, maybe I’ll catch this episode and see what’s going on.” Mind you, I didn’t know much about Gotham (the city or the show) at the time I started watching this episode; the most I knew about DC back then were some of the household names like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, etc. Then I found out that Selina, Oswald, and Edward were on the show, which was pretty interesting, but judging by the way the show looked in the first season, I thought it wasn’t going to be a thing that I was going to stick with long term.
Boy, I was so fucking wrong.
[Spoilers if you haven’t seen 1x16 I guess, though it’s been out for years so idk wtf you’re doing if you haven’t] I remember seeing Jim and Lee towards the beginning of the episode being all cute and stuff, and idk how, but Lee just became my favorite character from there, because she was just a huge ray of sunshine with lots of kindness in her heart and everything, and all she wanted was to do cute couple things with Jim or whatever, and she’s very smart/intelligent and all of that. I think about all of the screen time she’s had since then and wonder why people still hate on this woman, because she’s not right all the time, but she shouldn’t be burned at the stake compared to some of these other characters (literally the villains are running this town, so it’s crazy to even think about).
Anyways, my Lee Thompkins appreciation rant aside, they brought up Dick Grayson’s parents (the dude wasn’t even born yet in the universe, and I thought about Dick and Bruce meeting at some point later on, only to realize that it probably won’t even happen), Fish Mooney trying to escape that prison she was in for most of the episode, Jerome killing his mother, etc., and all of this made me wonder what happened next. Obviously, Cameron wasn’t in anymore episodes after that one, but I still wanted to check out the other stuff going on in Gotham because it seemed genuinely interesting at the time. Sometime during the hiatus between season 1 and season 2, I caught up with the entire show to check out the main plot of the first season, holding on to some of the highlights of the season (e.g. Edward going mad towards the end, Barbara getting hypnotized by The Ogre, Selina and Ivy hanging out in Barbara’s apartment, the whole mob plot, etc.) until the next one came on. By then, I was hyped for the show and tuned in for every episode, and it’s been that way ever since. I found myself loving more things about it that previous episodes didn’t have (e.g. Tabitha Galavan, Hugo Strange, the Maniacs breaking out of Gotham, more mad Edward Nygma, etc.), and it instantly became one of my top favorite shows.
Some of that joy and happiness may have gone away with new episodes, whether it be because of the writing or the lack of suspense or whatever with some of the plots or the lack of interest in others, but I still kept going because I learned more about the DC universe through that show than I ever would have expected. Every time I heard a name drop on the show or a reference to a comic book story that I was interested in, I would look up some of that stuff online and get more information on it. Gotham, in a way, got me into watching the DCEU as well, especially with all the fan edits I saw going around on here and on Vine when it was still active. Around the show’s second season, I found out that one of my favorite actresses (Viola Davis) was gonna be in Suicide Squad, which had some familiar characters in it that I recognized as I continued my journey with Gotham (namely Joker and Harley), so I ended up watching it in theaters. The movie came out at around such a difficult time for me. I had lost my great grandmother a couple of weeks before its official release, and while things didn’t get much better after watching that particular film (my mental health was so fucked up to the point where my GPA dropped significantly that fall), I appreciated what that film gave me, despite flaws in the script and the ways in which people were talking about it online.
That following year, Wonder Woman came out. I wasn’t sure what I expected, really, because I didn’t watch that many trailers at the time, so I went in with literally no expectations, yet I came out with it being one of my favorite solo comic book movies ever. Then I found out that she was gonna be in Justice League and ended up watching it, too (though I didn’t know too much about the behind-the-scenes stuff at the time; all I knew in relation to that was the Henry Cavill face debacle, and tbh, that was one of the things about that movie that made me cringe). And then after that, I watched Batman v Superman and Man of Steel on my own time before I started glancing over some other DC-related media. I even caught a couple of episodes of some other DCTV shows (e.g. Supergirl and The Flash). This is what I mean when I say that Gotham got me here in the first place, and honestly? I haven’t been more grateful. I’m typing all of this as I’m wearing one of the Shazam shirts that I got from my school, just reminiscing on all the experiences I have shared with so many wonderful people in the DC fandom, which wouldn’t have been possible had I not tuned into that one episode of Gotham in 2015. So to know that this show’s series finale is right around the corner is a bittersweet feeling — but mostly bitter, because it ended under unfortunate circumstances and that I’ll never see all of these cast members together again.
It didn’t hit me for weeks leading up to this moment, too. Like, I was upset that the show got cancelled, but I wasn’t very emotional or anything just yet. And then Camren made that one Twitter post saying that 5x11 was her last appearance on the show. I was literally out in public reading all of the heartfelt words she put into her post, and I remember feeling like I was gonna cry in front of everyone. It was slightly embarrassing because I hate crying in public, but if we’re being honest, I didn’t give a shit. I’ve spent so much time dedicating at least an hour a day to a show I’ll never get to see again after April 25th, and that shit hurts me, you know? I’m sure we’ve all felt something like that when one of our favorite shows ended (and you’re probably coming up with a list of names as we speak). No matter what the circumstances are, we’re all mourning the loss of a show that meant so much to us at one point in life or another. Once upon a time, I didn’t think Gotham would be one of those shows, and yet here we are, and I am forever grateful for what the writers, the directors, the cast, and the rest of the crew has given its small little nest of DC/Batman fans.
With that being said, I want to thank everyone who was directly involved with this show and put hours upon hours of labor into creating something unique and interesting for new comic book fans. I want to thank the writers and directors for bringing so many wonderful DC characters to life. I want to thank all of the supporting / guest cast members, regardless of how much screentime you had while you were on this show. I want to thank Chris Chalk, Morena Baccarin, Jessica Lucas, Erin Richards, Cameron Monaghan, Sean Pertwee, Donal Logue, Robin Lord Taylor, Cory Michael Smith, Camren Bicondova, Ben McKenzie, David Mazouz, etc. for being probably one of the best TV show main casts a fan could ever ask for, as well as some of my favorite portrayals of your respective characters. I want to thank all of the wonderful people whom I’ve met on this wonderful journey throughout the past five seasons. Overall, I want to thank this show for everything it’s introduced me to within the DC universe. Your legacy within the DCTV universe will not be forgotten.

Finally giving my opinions on Persona 5
Here’s a read more because this is honestly just me gushing about the history i have with the series
Prior to the summer of 2013, the best game I had ever played was not Pokemon Emerald (which if you know me irl, I fucking love Pokemon Emerald). By 2013, I had played a lot of really great games: Jak 2 &3, Sly Cooper 2 & 3, Red Dead Redemption, Halo 3, Kirby, Wind Waker, Ape Escape, Fire Emblem....a lot of really good games. But the game that stood out, the game that I played over and over at least once a year was Radiata Stories. This game stood out because 1.) I love character driven games and 2.) Radiata is one of the greatest (granted under-appreciated and quite frankly under the radar) JRPGs of all time.
Anyways, back to summer of 2013. Just completed my first year of college and was about to spend the summer alone....I forget what the hell I was doing but end of the first week I had set up a blanket fort in my living room and only had the company of a neighbor who didn’t like me much but kept coming over anyways. So I did the natural thing you do when you’re alone and depressed off your balls and went to gamestop and asked the employee for the best and longest JRPG they had. She recommended Eternal Sonata (a game I ended up not finishing) and Persona 4 for the PS2.
Long story short, I fell in love, and cried my eyes out when I said my goodbyes to a virtual cast of characters. I played it every summer, bought a Vita shortly after the ps2 version just to play golden, and eagerly awaited for 5 to be released. Hell, I found the original trailer before I even played golden. I have a huge emotional attachment to this franchise, which before my biggest emotional attachments to video games were Radiata and Pokemon (the game of my childhood). The reason is I had found this game when I needed the storytelling and themes the most (because I was depressed and alone and drowing my problems in alcohol). The cast of great friends combined with the immersion of putting yourself in the avatar’s shoes made it feel like I wasn’t so alone and got me through every summer I spent alone working until someone came to visit (or until I adopted my cat, Harley).
Between then and now, I got my hands on a few more great games: Dark Souls, Persona 3, Bloodborne (which holy shit this game is also fandiddlytastic), FFXV, more Pokemon and Fire Emblem etc. All great games.
8 years later, Persona 5 came out and was the first game I had been waiting for and said “wow, the wait was worth it.”
And to be perfectly honest, its the best damn game I’ve ever played. I played it for 2 weeks straight, got the platinum my second playthrough, and I’m halfway through my third playthrough with nearly 200 hours logged.
Y’all. This game is great.
To get into the specifics, I’m just gonna start off by leaving the soundtrack as holy shit, all bias aside this is the best video game soundtrack, going on par with the likes of Final Fantasy and Zelda (although in terms of OST of the year, I would say Nier is gonna be going toe-to-toe with this one).
Next up is the art direction. Everyone is talking about how this game eats, breathes, and sleeps style. They aren’t wrong. The art direction for this game is insane, the screen is always in motion. If you cycle through the menu screen, there’s animations for every selection. Even in the shops. The victory screen is running around and watching the flashy animations for your battle results. Its insane and despite running on a ps3 engine, the game feels beyond that.
As far as gameplay, the game is basically Pokemon, but with extra turns for hitting weaknesses. Also the way you catch the Personas in this game gets an added feature if you’ve only played 3 and 4, which is demon negotiation. You hold them up outlaw style, and mug them for money, items, or use their personality traits to answer their qeustions and get you to join them (provided you’re at the appropriate level). Everything else is a giant life sim/visual novel and the game nails it with its cast of great characters.
The characters in this game exceed anything done in the other games. Every one of them, from party members, to the side characters (which in past games were pretty lackluster imo), has an interesting story to tell that keeps you engaged as they try to tackle their problems with your help. And buidling up these relationships adds more than just extra exp when fusing personas; they add combat elements, help with negotiations, the option to switch characters out mid battle, discounts, the option TO FUCKING DO SOMETHING AFTER YOU EXPLORE A DUNGEON BESIDES SLEEP TAKE THAT MORGANA. Its good shit.
The game comes together, and since its an Atlus game in the SMT realm, the story is gripping...for the most part.
Keep in mind, this is my favorite game of all time, but it does have its problems.
First and foremost, we have the cast and relationships.
While the cast is the best to date, there is one problem I have with them: the game’s writing doesn’t give the main cast enough events to make them feel like good friends over time. This isn’t to say they aren’t friendly with each other, because they are and do genuinely want to forge stronger friendships outside of Phantom Thieving, but the game doesn’t have as many side events due to its shorter calendar coming from P4G. However, even coming from P4 vanilla, there’s just not as many in-game events of them hanging out as there were, and so as an ensemble, they don’t seem as close together as the game tries to play them off. This is just a nitpick though.
Second gripe I have with the cast, and this one is bigger and hopefully something that gets updated in the rumored (and lets face it this is probably gonna happen) Ultimate Edition which I will buy in a heartbeat because I’m fucking trash, but I’m a little let down that on a game this big there’s no option for a female Joker, and that you can’t be gay/bi. And this is even a bigger disappointment given that there’s plenty of set ups within the confidants’ dialogue to do so.
Granted, no matter what I would still date Makoto or Haru, but the lack of male romance options is a let down because at the end of the day, Joker is an avatar character and should represent the player as such. This part of the game actually disappoints me over my 3 major complaints. Its obviously not a deal breaker but it is a disappointment nonetheless.
The last disappointment I have is actually something of a spoiler if you’ve played the past two games so I’m gonna hit some spaces and mark where the spoiler starts and ends.
*************SPOILER STARTS HERE*********************
The game’s ending. The game has a very strong start, and keeps up the pace for about 90% of the game, but falls off in the last dungeons. The storytelling here starts to fall short mostly do to cliches. I won’t get into specifics but I will say the final boss is very much a recycled theme from the past 2 games, and the boss before that just doesn’t seem to fit minus the exposition about him you’re given from the start. In fact, the ending to his arc just feels anti-climatic, and while there’s a story-based reason for that, the link between the two happens a little too fast and could’ve been fleshed out more, which I feel the fix could’ve been just making the game longer. I feel like Atlus was worried the game was too long but when you go into these games, you’re going in because you want the longer experience and I personally feel you should try to tell the story to its fullest rather than speeding things up. The speedup especially feels awkward because its at the game’s climax.
But this is also a nitpick.
**************SPOILER ENDS HERE FAM****************
anyways, those are my thoughts on the game.
I love this game. This isn’t anywhere near a review but mostly just a rant and i’m sorry if you read the entire thing because I needed to give my irl friends a break and shut the fuck up about it but I wanted to get my full thoughts out somewhere. So yeah.
12/10 gonna play again tbh
