chapter two: stay.

masterlist.

As soon as you turn in your last test paper for the school year -for your entire high school life, now that you thought about it - you actually stand up to stretch.

The weight of academics had trickled off your back at a steady pace throughout your years at Shiratorizawa, but now it was as if an entire world was plucked off your shoulders in one fell swoop.

With the weight now gone, you immediately felt lighter. Taller, even.

You turn to Semi to find him stretching as well as the bell rang.

Your last exam had been chemistry and you were pleased to see him satisfied with what he turned in.

As soon as your teacher walked out with test papers in hand, Semi dashed over to you.

“Doc, did I ever tell you you’re a lifesaver?”

“Plenty of times already,” you laugh, fixing your things back into your bag.

“Well get ready to hear it over and over again for the next few days.'' He sits on the narrow end of your desk. “I’m definitely treating you as thanks. Wanna get some crepes later with Tsumi and Fumi?”

“Not later. Toshi and I have a date,” The statement is punctuated by you zipping your bag closed.

His brows shoot up. “So you’re taking our advice? You’re gonna talk to him?”

You shake your head. “He was the one who wanted to have a date. I wouldn’t want to ruin the mood by dropping something like that,”

And especially not the night before the interview that could define his entire career after graduating.

If Semi was disappointed with the revelation, he didn’t show it. Instead he hums. “How about tomorrow, then?”

“I’m going to-”

“The library,” he says in unison with you, making you scowl.

Semi only grins as you roll your eyes.

“But I’ll be there early and I’m not gonna stay for too long.” All you had to do was return some of the reference books you borrowed for now. Getting ahead on the course syllabi you managed to get a copy of could wait some other time.

“I’ll meet you there then we could head off to lunch then?” Semi offers. “Maybe some guys from the volleyball club might come along, too?”

You cock your head to the side. “But Toshi would still be in Tokyo by then.”

“Yeah, we know.” Semi says, getting off your desk. “But that doesn’t mean you can’t hang out with you. You’re our friend, too, you know.”

The sentiment makes you smile in spite of yourself. “Okay,”

A familiar bass voice calls your name, making you turn to one of the doors of your classroom where Ushijima stood.

“Well that’s my cue,” Semi says, heading back to his desk and slinging on his backpack. He approaches his captain with an easy manner. “You have a safe trip later, Wakatoshi,” Then he turns back to you, “You two have fun, yeah?”

You nod back before waving him goodbye.

“Do you need to stop by your dorm first?” Toshi asks, taking your bag from your hands.

“Just to drop off my books,”

He hums. “Would it be alright for me to drop you off at your dorm so you can get dressed and I can get my things?”

“Sure,” And as you fall into step beside him you give him a little nudge. “How did you do, by the way?”

He furrowed his brows. “We won't get results until next week.”

A chuckle escapes your lips. “No, I mean, how were you as you took the exams? Are you confident in your answers?”

“Ah,” he nods. “I believe I did alright. Calculus was difficult as usual but I think I’ll be alright. And English was easier than expected thanks to your help.” He turns to you with a smile. “How about you?”

“Calc definitely was a nightmare,” The still-fresh memory of the last problem on the paper had already seared itself into the back of your mind. You make a mental note to look it over later in your free time.

“Though I’m more worried about how I did in Biology and Chemistry.” You admit sheepishly.

“But those are your best subjects.”

“Well, I guess, but those are the subjects that get looked over when applying for pre-med.”

“I don’t think you have to worry,”

“Hm?”

“You’re brilliant. If anyone can gain top marks in those subjects, it's you.”

The compliment, in all the nonchalance of Toshi’s delivery, makes you blush all the way down to your toes.

When you approach your dorm building, you peck Toshi on the cheek before yanking your bag from his grasp and rushing up to your room.

Being Friday night, school protocols were more lax, extending curfew for students who opt to stay in the dorms over the weekend,

This gave you plenty of time to catch up with Natsumi before she left for home and for you to get ready for your date.

Though nothing could quite prepare you for what awaited you outside.

Seeing Toshi in anything that wasn’t his school uniform or athletic wear was an unusual sight to you but you welcome it all the same as you approach him in front of your building.

Crisp, dark denim jeans fit smartly over strong and lean legs and were paired with a dark gray shirt and a light jacket.

“You look nice,” Toshi says as soon as you’re in front of him.

And despite the cool air of early spring, heat still flushes your cheeks as you mumble your thanks. “Let’s go?”

He nods and leads the way.

At least, for all of two minutes.

You could’ve sworn the outfit you picked out for the day was appropriate for the late afternoon weather, but you barely make it ten paces outside of Shiratorizawa’s gate before you start to shiver at a strong gust of wind.

Ushijima stops in his tracks.

“Toshi?” you ask, following suit.

He says nothing as sets his duffel bag to the ground and takes off his jacket. “Here,” he says, draping it over your shoulders.

All the protests you were about to voice die in your throat at the worried look on his face.

So you push your arms through the sleeves and fix the collar around your neck. It was definitely too big on you but it blocked out the chill just the same.

“Thank you, Toshi,”

“Anytime,” He says, taking your hand. “Let’s go or we’ll be late,”

And you squeeze your fingers around his as you follow his lead.

Your research told you that the restaurant was a small family-run joint that served mostly Japanese food.

A kindly middle-aged man greeted the pair of you as you entered and made your way to one of the smaller tables further in.

On your way, you pass by a table of girls from another school who shamelessly ogled your companion.

Once settled, Toshi leans in. “I need to use the restroom.” He whispered.

You nod and watch as he doubles back to ask the man at the counter for directions to the bathroom, rolling your eyes at the girls whose eyes remained glued to your boyfriend, before he disappeared into the restroom.

Then you smile in spite of yourself, knowing you couldn’t quite blame those girls even if you tried.

Sometimes Toshi’s presence alone was enough to draw attention even when he wasn’t on the court.

(The court was where he belonged and you both know it.)

Whichever the case, you make quick work of ordering both of your favorites and request for the beverages to be served first.

A minute passes before you catch Toshi emerging from the restrooms, which was cue for the table of girls to stare and whisper amongst themselves again.

He meets your eyes as he heads to your table. “Green tea?” he asks as he sits down.

“Yeah, I thought you might want some?”

He smiles. “I do. Have you ordered?”

“For the both of us, if that’s okay.”

“Hm?”

“Hayashi rice for you and some udon for me.”

“My favorite.”

You smile. “Of course.”

And the smile he gives you in return sends a kind of rush through you so sharp it’s almost disorienting.

“We can definitely consider this a celebration, then.”

He could easily mean a celebration for the end of the school year, but it doesn’t get rid of the obvious implication of his recruitment as well.

Not with the Schweiden Adlers flyer sticking out of the outer pockets of his bag and taunting you from the corner of your eye.

Not when you were a stone’s throw away from the station and well within range of the various trains and rails passing by with every minute.

You wanted so badly to say that you were proud of him. That you were excited for his upcoming meeting and that you wished him all the best after graduation. That he had your unwavering support in everything he’s spent his whole life training for.

But the words couldn’t come out of your mouth without a horrible aftertaste, which just made you feel worse.

You knew for damn sure that Toshi deserved every opportunity that came his way and he had worked too damn hard for too damn long to even let one chance slip past.

(Especially not from the strongest Division 1 V-League team.)

So who the hell were you to ask him to stay in Miyagi?

(A wide-eyed admirer of his who just happened to catch his eye in return. Nothing more and nothing less.)

So you manage to keep your smile and nod in agreement before making conversation about anything and everything that wasn’t his immediate recruitment.

And for a while, it worked.

He told you about the Volleyball intensive training camp that was held at your school.

(“So someone just snuck in?”

“Yes. It was Shouyo Hinata from Karasuno.”

“The one with the freakishly high jumps?”

“That would be him.”)

And you recount to him Semi and Natsumi’s band’s latest gig and even show him the video you took.

(“I didn’t know Sato-san could sing so powerfully.”

“Neither did I! Apparently this was the first time she actually sang lyrics to their original song.” )

And in between bites of your meal you laughed at old jokes and smiled as you spoke about your mutual friends.

(“So Tendou’s really going for culinary school, huh?”

“Yes, he wants to become a chocolatier.”

“Are there any schools like that in Japan?”

“He said there are few, but he aims to study and work in Paris.”

“That’s amazing. I’ve always wanted to go to Paris as a child.”

“Paris is very popular for tourists. Especially couples.” )

But of course it could only work for so long; the late afternoon bled into evening too fast and the food was consumed far too quickly and before you know it. Toshi glanced at his watch with a small frown. “I should be heading to the station now.”

You nod. “Right.”

And when he gets up to pay the bill himself, you find you don’t even have the energy to protest.

It takes a better part of your resolve, but you will yourself to see Toshi off at the station.

If you can’t voice your support as well as you should, you might as well show it.

What you found strange, though, was that it was your boyfriend who was more hesitant.

“Are you sure you don’t want me to walk you back to the bus stop?” he asks.

You shake your head. “You might miss your train,”

“There will be other trains.”

“Well, yes, but you shouldn’t have your uncle wait too long.”

He frowns at this but you wave him off. “It’s alright!”

(It’s wasn’t.)

“Alright,” He finally concedes.

And before you can bid him goodbye, he drops his bag to the ground, steps forward, and takes you into his arms.

You stiffen for a moment before wrapping your own arms around his middle and squeeze.

(You want to squeeze him tighter to keep him here. To make him stay.)

You feel the press of his lips at the top of your head and the rumble of his voice in his chest as he murmurs into your hair, “I’ll be back soon.”

You’re in a daze when he pulls away and you stay that way as he heads into the gate, watching his figure retreat deeper and deeper inside until you lose track of him altogether.

Sure that you’re out of each other’s sight, you turn for the exit.

And the trip home, even with Toshi's jacket around your shoulders, leaves a chill under your skin.

It’s when you’ve arrived at Shiratorizawa’s gate that your phone vibrates.

Toshi: I’m about to board the Shinkansen.

You: good to know you made it there safely.

You: the ride to Tokyo is about 2 hours right?

Toshi: Yes. I’ll just sleep until then.

You: don’t forget to set an alarm, okay?

You: the last thing we want is for you to wake up in Kyoto.

Toshi: Thank you for reminding me.

Toshi: Also, the Schweiden Adlers’ headquarters is half an hour from Shinjuku

Toshi: There would be a lot of shops by Shinjuku Station.

Toshi: Would you like me to bring you back something while I'm here?

You: ah there’s no need for that! it’s alright!

Toshi: Are you sure?

You hesitate before typing.

You: Yep!

You: Just stay safe, ok?

The dorms were near empty when you got to your building.

It made sense, considering the final exams had just finished and everyone would be anxious to get the hell out of dodge.

You frown, regretting that you scheduled your trip home for next week despite reasoning (mostly to yourself than to your family at home) that you’d rather leave with everything packed up for Moving Day than go back and forth weeks before graduation.

(It was too quiet and you hated it.)

Nonetheless, you let the autopilot of routine takeover for the rest of the night.

Bath. Pajamas. Brush teeth. Call home.

The conversation was easy enough to hold up until your mother asks, “How is Wakatoshi-kun, by the way? ”

And autopilot turned off as you winced at the question. “He’s headed to Tokyo now.” You manage to say.

“Oh! He got recruited? ”

“Yeah, in a Division One team no less. He’s there for negotiations.”

“That’s wonderful news.”

“It is,”

“Are you alright, dear?”

(No.)

You nod as if your mother could see you. “Yeah. Just tired from the exams.”

Not a complete lie, but you��re relieved she bought it regardless. “Alright I won’t keep you any longer. I’ll call again tomorrow.”

“Sorry for worrying you.”

“Take care of yourself, dear. ”

“Alright. Bye.”

You wait for your mother to hang up before letting out a heavy sigh.

Now you were all alone.

(That’s how it was going to be, right? You might as well get used to it.)

So you do what you did best.

You hit the books, that’s what.

And the first on your hitlist was that blasted final calculus problem.

Toshi: I’ve arrived in Tokyo. I’m now in my uncle’s car.

Toshi: I’ve arrived at my Uncle’s house.

Toshi: Sleep well.

on doctor carmilla and her relationship to the mechanisms

welcome to my carmilla analysis post! all her lore is too big a subject to handle in one post, so i’m starting with this more specific one and seeing where it goes!

the main thing i’m going to be talking about here is the fan interpretation of her. i’ve collected all the evidence that supports fanon carmilla*, and i’m going to use it to discuss why fandom interpretation, while it has a basis, could be better done/more accurate to the character. i’m collecting evidence here both to support the fan interpretation and criticize it; this is very much not a discourse post, it’s an analysis post!

*i’m defining this as unnecessary experiments on and/or further abuse of the mechanisms.

(that being said, please don’t make her racist/ableist/homophobic; i’ve seen far too much of that, and it makes me incredibly uncomfortable as she is a disabled japanese lesbian and is also most likely trans. i mostly see this in modern aus, but it’s in ‘canon compliant’ works as well- the largest offender here is the popular headcanon that she forced jonny to change his accent to a british one, which for what i hope are obvious reasons given this section doesn’t sit right with me.)

rest under the cut! warnings for medical trauma, including non-consensual drugging and mind alteration, and discussions of abuse (both from a parental figure and from a significant other). it gets heavy; please stay safe!

first off: this isn’t really on the lore of her backstory, but i will touch upon that occasionally as it’s important to understanding her character! i would really suggest to listening to exhumed and (un)plugged (bandcamp / youtube) and ageha (prototype edition) (bandcamp / youtube) and reading her wiki page to get a grasp of the deeper lore; not necessarily before reading this, but definitely if you’re planning to make her a major character in your work.

we only have two first-hand sources into carmilla’s interactions with the mechanisms; lashings (part one / part two / transcript) and homesick (video / transcript). in both of those, we see that the mechanisms- or at least jonny and nastya- are very uncomfortable with and/or afraid of her. lashings has a few examples of this, regarding nastya; her tone is noticeably quiet and cold whenever she speaks to carmilla and near the end of the show, carmilla hugs her from behind without warning, making her freeze up.

homesick is even clearer in this regard- after the song is performed, carmilla and jonny have this exchange, which i’ve copied from the transcript in its entirety as it’s all potentially relevant.

[JONNY] (very, legitimately afraid) ALRIGHT ALRIGHT- Stop stop stop stop stop, whoa whoa whoa okay okay okay- I can’t take it anymore! Are you going to kill us or not? Cause I’m (stuttering)- It’s lovely when we’re playing songs, and it's great. But we shot- well, one of us, shot you out of an airlock, and I wanna know. What are you going to do to us? Other than killing me?

[DOC C] Now is not the time, Jonny, I’m feeling a bit tetchy.

[JONNY] Watch it. You’re- you’re planning something. Something.

[DOC C] Medication time.

[JONNY] Yes-- (cutoff)

the video ends here. the lines at the end are most likely a leadup to the song welcome to medi bay co, but given carmilla’s tone in the recording, it could also be a threat towards him. this implies she has non-consensually drugged him in the past. his conviction that she was going to kill him also suggests that that has happened as well.

from this, we can conclude carmilla’s actions in the common fanon are not out of character, but her motives and thoughts towards the mechanisms could often be considered so. the default motivation for her seems to be to experiment- she’s driven out of boredom or curiosity, and is simply using the mechanisms as test subjects. there are a few cases to directly cite in canon of her experimenting on someone (out of something other than necessity so that they survived)- the first one is from exhumed, and is not in reference to the mechanisms, but instead a clone of herself (x). (i won’t elaborate too much on the post i linked as a source here, but it’s very interesting and i’d suggest giving it a read!)

doesn’t fit too much here, but you know what does?

Highly amused by the moral ambiguity of the events leading to his supposed demise – where both Brian and the priest believed themselves to have the moral high ground, she rebuilt Brian with a slight modification – an inbuilt morality core, with two settings.

brian’s switch. the bio straight-up says she made it out of amusement, which is a huge issue as anyone can flip it (except brian himself; don’t have the source on hand, but there was a post a while back that mentioned it was on the small of his back, which he can’t reach) and it changes his entire mindset!

however! this is the only case of something like this happening!

maki has said that carmilla cared for the mechanisms, and considered them her adopted children. while the evidence i’ve noted earlier almost becomes worse with that knowledge, it’s a different mindset than test subjects.

this is getting into a bit more of personal thoughts/headcanons, but we know carmilla had a lot of trouble with healthy relationships, including familial ones. she could wholeheartedly care about the mechanisms, and just not know how to form an actually positive relationship with them. in addition, if you view my personal headcanon that carmilla made loreli into a vampire instead of the other way round, she sure does have a problem with people she’s attached to dying, doesn’t she? she’s more sympathetic in general than she tends to be painted, and she has had good interactions with the mechanisms. (mostly drawing on what maki has said on the mechscord for this- sadly, invites are currently closed).

not elaborating on it too much here, as there’s a lot to unpack vis a vis lore and red stringing, but it’s also likely that carmilla does grow and change and get better as a person- she left the mechanisms most likely of her own volition, as maki has said she ‘didn’t leave via the airlock’, and made an active effort to fix her past mistakes. this is in contrast to the other mechanisms (except possibly brian) who never make any kind of effort to stop being terrible people. (may write a meta/lore explanation on this eventually, but it’s too large a topic to cover here!)

tl;dr: carmilla was abusive towards the mechanisms, but she was more likely to be well-meaning, rather than bored or curious.

The Lost Ones Ch. 1

Chapter 1: Illegal Clones and Legal Crimes

Summary: Anti liked joking around, he likes pulling pranks and bothering Dark now that he’s permanently moved into Egoton. But one day he decides to take the joke too far, and it gets about five times more unfunny. But when it’s all said and done, Dark had to admit . . . he is charming.

A/N: someone requested this little joke about Dark being short and so I threw it in here.

~::~ Twenty Years Ago ~::~

It began as things tended to begin with Anti: jokes.

“Hey, Dark,” Anti had burst into Dark’s main office to bother him, again.

“Leave,” Dark told him, not looking up.

“What’dya get when yah combine you an’ Wilford?” Anti sounded like he was trying to keep himself from cackling madly.

“I don’t care,” Dark told him.

“A hot mess,” Anti joked. Usually when Dark didn’t respond he used about anything to try and get his attention.

“If you need a body disposed of, I’m not helping,” Dark warned.

“Yer just no fun,” Anti sulked.

“I’m busy,” Dark reminded. “It’s bad enough I have to put up with Wilford’s antics, I refuse to humor you as well.”

Anti then attempted to stab Dark and the ensuing fight got rid of some of Anti’s pent up energy. It also got the glitch thinking: what would Dark or Wil’s kid be like?

He imagined Dark’s kid would probably be a lot like Dark was, about ZERO fun, and in about six years when he saw Kay and Illinois for the first time he would learn he was right.

But Wil’s kid: that had to be an interesting kid. Wil was mad fun, a complete and utter lunatic, there was no way he couldn’t pass that down to a kid. And fortunately for Anti, Wil was a prolific nymphomaniac. He had to have some kid, somewhere. There was no way the Wilford that Anti knew hadn’t had sloshed, unprotected sex at least once in his life. Everyone in the crime world knew that while Dark and Wil were Ego’s big couple, Wil slept around.

After a month, Anti gave up looking for the brat, either Dark had tried to clean up Wil’s extra-relationship affairs before they could bear fruit, or the kid had been hidden from Dark.

Another couple of weeks passed and his brain came up with a stupid idea: why not clone the assholes? Cut out the middleman. It was probably their only way someone was even going to get an ankle biter out of Dark in the first place.

But, as it turned out, cloning someone was way harder than Anti thought it would be. He needed people to do the cloning, a safe place for them to work. And after Google joined Dark, Anti had to avoid his prying eye because that walking laptop told Dark everything.

The eggheads he’d threatened found had been excited about the process, but hesitantly optimistic about their chances. But either way they’d need a test and Anti shrugged his shoulders and knew he couldn’t get any of the conventional ways to make a kid from Dark at least without getting his head blown off for even suggesting it.

They needed a test and Wil was the easy option.

“So wait?” Wil was already wasted, the slur in his speech even more pronounced after enough margaritas and martinis to kill a normal man, the two were sitting in a private room at some bar, Anti figured the mad man probably wouldn’t remember this come morning. “You need m’ what?”

“Yer aura,” Anti was admittedly a bit buzzed himself, electricity literally arching off of him in some spots. “I mean the docs will prolly use whate’er but I just wanna see what yer aura does if we pick it apart.”

Will just shrugged, and either he didn’t care or was too drunk to care, but he set his arm on the table and whipped out the stiletto knife he usually hid in the garter on his right thigh and ran it down his arm until he randomly stopped. Wil picked something up and a whirling mass of pink and yellow came off.

The mad man held it out. “Here yah go.”

Anti hesitantly grabbed it, it felt like the consistency of cotton candy, but had almost a soapy, saccharine, bubble gum. And to Anti something about it felt twisted and fake.

But by this point Anti knew Wilford was incapable of keeping secrets when he was this sloshed. Wil had already slipped some pretty spicy secrets about what he and Dark did in the bedroom that had Anti demanding that he wanted literal brain bleach to get out of his mind.

So Anti took it and let Wil try his hand at drunken flirting, leaving to go back to his lab coats to see what they could do with it.

And to everyone’s surprise, the aura was reacting to stuff, almost like it was a living organism or a parasite that lived within Wil’s soul and it was very choosy about what it let them stick onto it. Despite the fact that it just sat there and did nothing.

It looked a bit like a slug after it had stopped moving, a pink and yellow swirling slug.

At this point Anti had honestly forgotten about cloning Dark, the glitch demon wanted to see their auras fighting. He wanted to watch Wil and Dark’s auras tear each other apart.

So it was time to get Dark’s aura, but Anti couldn’t just ask the Entity for it, no! He knew that there was no force on earth or Hell that would get Dark to willingly give Anti his aura for his death matches. So he’d have to take a chunk off by force.

It took a week of stalking Dark before he finally got his chance, and Anti was just about ready to fight Dark himself but as luck and fate would have it, Dark decided to got out hunting.

The Entity was stalking a couple gangsters when Anti decided to make his move. They were a local group Anti liked to pick on from time to time, so they were a tiny bit smarter than some of the other groups that had tried and died taking Dark on as if he was Deceit.

When Dark folded himself out of one of the alley shadows, one of the gangsters froze, watching Dark snap his own neck like the drama queen he was.

“Huh,” the braver of the three gangsters realized. “Yer shorter than me.”

Anti almost blew his cover trying to stifle his own laughter. Dark looked insulted and infuriated. “Excuse you‽”

“Sorry,” the guy was over six feet tall, but not more than half a foot taller than Dark or Anti. “I just figured “the Demon of Egoton” would be more demon-like, an’ bigger.”

Dark seemed to get angrier, and Anti was trying to stop himself from laughing so much that he almost missed his chance.

The Entity’s aura shot out and grabbed onto the gangster, one of his friends tried to shoot Dark but it was stopped by another part of Dark’s aura. It began to ruthlessly tear into the gangster and his friends. “I’m not too short to kill you!”

Anti lunged for Dark, managing to get his claws into Dark’s aura. The demon screamed out, in screeching pain. “I’ll be takin’ some ‘a that.”

“ANTI! I will tear you apart so thoroughly that no force in Hell can piece you back together again!” Dark was furious, the gangster that were lucky enough not to get struck by Dark’s rampaging aura were forgotten.

Anti raced off, running into the Void and trying to keep the writhing mass that was Dark’s aura away from the other demon. It was consciously trying to get back to Dark, or to kill Anti, the glitch demon wasn’t sure which and he didn’t particularly care at the moment. He was just trying to get away from Dark to keep him from taking his aura back.

Eventually Anti did get away, it was more luck that anything else. But when the coast was clear Anti returned to the scientists, covered in his own blackish, glitching, ichor blood and holding out the angry, hissing fragment of Dark’s aura.

“Is that thing hissing?” The lead scientist asked, her curly light brown hair barely tied out of the way. Anti had completely forgotten all their names at this point. He was pretty sure it was Beautiful or Bunny or some weird French name he couldn’t pronounce.

“Yeah,” Anti smiled, “let’s throw this bastard in with Wil’s and see if they kill each other.”

“Is that still alive after you disconnected that from him?” She was staring at it like it was a scientific marvel.

“Well yeah,” Anti gestured as he spoke, “Wilf’s just got a weird aura. Most ‘a our auras are like this caustic fooker’s.”

Quickly the scientist grabbed a container, the same type they put Wil’s in and Anti poked at Dark’s aura with his own, trying to get it especially angry.

“Okay, Bunny let’s get this show on the road,” Anti dusted off his hands.

“It’s Beauregard,” she corrected sharply, fixing her glasses as she held onto the container with one hand.

“Ahh, whatever,” Anti dismissed, smiling. “I wanna see that prick’s aura get shredded.”

Beauregard stopped as they entered another room, Anti moving through the wall. “Hold up, if we put them together are they going to just rip each other apart?”

Anti shrugged, “I mean, Dark’s an angry fooker an’ Wil’s aura is infectious, they gotta do somethin’ cool to each other.”

Beauregard and Anti’s conversation came to a halt when they heard some yelling in the next room. She ran ahead, yelling, “What is going on in here?”

“I don’t know,” one of the technicians looked panicked. He and another technician were trying to keep Wil’s aura in the container it was in, the aura was bubbling and foaming, making a weird noise, Dark’s one aura was letting out that high pitched echo that Dark was infamous for. It cause more than one person to look around wildly for the demon to suddenly appear. It almost seemed like the fragment of Dark’s aura was shaking. The entire container Dark’s aura was in almost fell out of Beauregard’s arms. The result was the two auras seeming to square up against each other as if they were going to fight.

Anti was almost cackling, rubbing his hands together, “Come on Bubbles, fook ‘im up. I got a fiver on yeh.”

Wilford’s aura lunged again and suddenly it was inside the same container as Dark’s. The ringing became more intense.

Beauregard jumped, letting out this surprised scream. Then the ringing stopped when Wilford’s aura just parked itself next to Dark’s and they both calmed down. No one in the room moved, not wanting to set off either of their test subjects. Beauregard watched in awe as Dark’s aura changed from an inky grey to a mix of blue and red, the colors changing between the two but never mixing. It was more blue than red at the moment.

“Oh yeh sappy bastards,” Anti cursed, stomping over. “Come on, I wanted a cage match!”

“I thought we were cloning demons?” Beauregard asked him, most of her attention was on the little aura samples.

“Ehh, I’m already bored, tell me when they actually start doin’ somethin’ interesti’,” Anti dismissed, and then he left.

But when he was fully gone he stuck his head back in, “An’ by that I mean they set themselves on fire or start shootin’ acid.”

“Right, right, of course,” Beauregard agreed, holding up the container and smiling. Even if they failed, she was going to learn some amazing things about auras.

While Beauregard was planning, Anti had already gone back to Brighton to start terrorizing people again.

He was almost immediately found by Dark who demanded the shredded off piece of his aura back, he could grow it back on his own, of course, but didn’t like the idea of Anti having it.

So when Anti couldn’t produce the missing piece of Dark’s aura, the fight resulted in Anti being turned into pixels and Dark walking off with a broken arm and five broken ribs — not that Dark told anyone about the broken bones.

It took him a week to reform. By then he’d actually forgotten he’d gotten a team to do the actual cloning.

After months and months and months, they called him to say they’d “finally gotten a live one” and Anti couldn’t pass up the opportunity to watch Egoton burn.

After all, what could be more destructive than Wilford’s madness with Dark’s power?

Valentine's Prompt: Jim and Bones overhear somebody saying "You can't love somebody till you love yourself." Jim snorts and mutters, "Bullshit" before rushing out of the room. (drama ensues)

“Seriously, Abramson?” Bones glared at the lieutenant as his watched his husband exit the mess. So much for breakfast.

Abramson, who had been mansplaining love to two very bored looking engineers, looked perplexed. “Doc?”

“Do yourself a favor and report to Chapel later for a Valarian flu vaccine. You’re due.”

McCoy watched the man’s face heat up with satisfaction. Valarian flu vaccine required a plethora of STD tests for all sexually active crewmembers because it could kill anyone with even a dormant case. Abramson was likely going to have an awkward conversation later.

When he caught up with Jim, his husband was doing his best to blend in with the grey bulkhead near the private bank of turbolifts.

“Jim? You okay?”

Jim pinched his nose and blew out his breath. “You chew out Abramson?”

“Dude’s a dick. Can’t wait until that transfer gets approved.”

Jim nodded. “He was right, though.”

“That asshole isn’t right about anything.” Bones huffed a laugh. “And I’m sure he was quoting Rent.”

Jim didn’t rise to the change in subject. Bones could tell he was circling a mood and needed a distraction fast. Bones had a good idea involving a warm shower followed by cool sheets. No better way to spend the day off.

But Jim looked uneasy. Bones didn’t want to talk about it because the subject of self-love wasn’t the easiest one to broach when you had a complicated relationship with yourself in the first place. Neither Bones or Jim had the best true confidence, though his husband was always a cocky bastard. But it didn’t take multiple medical degrees to realize that it was a coping mechanism at best.

“Let’s not poke too hard at this, kay? Unless you wanna see if Grace has time to chat?”

Grace was the latest edition to the crew–a counselor specializing in everything from PTSD to marriage counseling. Bones didn’t know which one she thought they needed.

“No, I’m good.” Jim said and let Bones pull him in for a hug.

“Let’s go home, yeah?” Bones kissed behind Jim’s ear and tangled his fingers within Jim’s.

But the ship had other plans.

Before they could even reach the turbolift, the blaring of the red alert had them halting.

Bones saw Jim sag, eyes screwing shut as he took two deep breaths.

“Jim–”

But he straightened, squeezed Bones’ hand and grabbed his comm. “Spock, what do we got?”

“Unknown vessel on radar, Captain. It’s attempting to dock.”

Jim swore. “I’ll be right there.”

“I’ll see you later.”

“You better.” Bones said and watched Jim disappear into the lift, heading up to the bridge. Bones turned and headed back into the center of the ship, where the medbay was probably already in a flurry of activity, waiting for further orders.

“Leonard.”

Bones blinked and saw a rainbow. Or rather, as he blinked again, everything was tinged in bright colors. As if a everyone was surrounded by an orb of the ROYGBIV.

“Spock? What’s going on?”

“Jim and an engineering lieutenant have been abducted.”

“What?” Bones pushed up off the floor. He had been heading to the transporter room where Jim was about to–

“He was abducted or he went to meet the bastards?” Bones spit the question without needing his answer.

“I do not know. The entire situation is highly unusual.”

Bones blinked. “Highly unusual for us?”

“Indeed.”

“How’re their vital signs? And what engineering lieutenant?”

“They requested Lieutenant Abramson accompany the Captain.”

Bones swore and followed Spock down to the transporter room. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”

“No. I would not jest at a time like this, Leonard.”

Bones rolled his eyes. “So why do you look like you swallowed a rainbow.”

“An after effect of our contact with the Ars Cornu.”

“The hell’s that?”

“Unicorns.” Scotty breathed when they entered the room.

The entire transporter room looked like a grade-school girl’s dream, the air shimmered with color and…glitter?

“Unicorn dust.” Uhura said, shaking her head. “It’s everywhere.”

“I’m…lost. What the hell does this have to do with Jim and Abramson going missing.”

“The Ars Cornu are legendary space creatures. They encounter those in need and convince them of something that they’re unsure of. They’ve stopped wars mid-battle.” Chekov said, excitedly from where he was scraping some unicorn dust into a sample bag. “The Russians have written many tales about them.”

“Jim was abducted by unicorns.”

“Yes.”

“I’m getting too old for this shit.”

And he left to go monitor his husband’s vitals in peace, trying not to worry about what these so-called unicorns were doing to him.

Bones pulled Jim off the transporter pad. He shimmered a bit and Bones worried that maybe he wasn’t real, maybe he was an apparition and the Ars Cornu had done something to him, something Bones couldn’t fix–

But then Jim surged forward and kissed him like it was their first time and before long they were in their quarters, stripping like newlyweds, hands roaming and touching and causing goosebumps to rise as their lips skimmed naked skin.

“God, Jim–”

“I’m sorry, Bones. I’m sorry for not believing.”

“In unicorns?” Bones laughed and Jim nipped his neck.

“No. I love me because you love me. And I feel better just knowing you’re here and that you love me.”

Bones pulled away to search his husband’s face. It was the sappiest the other man had gotten in a while.

“You not high on unicorn dust?”

Jim’s lip twitched. “Maybe.” Jim’s hands slid down the sides of Bones’ waist, fingers dipping below the waistband of his boxers. “But I never want you to think you’re not enough, that I can’t love you because I sometimes don’t love myself.”

“Oh, darlin’,” Bones gasped as Jim’s ran a finger down his back, inches from his ass crack. “I–” His thoughts stuttered.

Jim smiled wickedly, understanding the sentiment. “I know. Thank you.”

Bones shifted so that he could push Jim on top of the bed, cradling Jim’s head as they fell together. He wondered briefly how he could thank the unicorns as he took in the sight of this man, the love of his life, but figured that was a question for a much later time.

Narrator:

He drank his coffee black - like his heart.

He paced around his office.

He grabbed his tape recorder

And began his great hypothesis.

Doc:

I always think about me

And I hope that they do to

Taking my views into account before they choose

The option that most fucks me over

But do they ever dig deep?

Deeper into what I mean?

What I say?

What I mean to say?

What I say I mean?

Am I mean?

Or just median?

The centre of the whole

Or just a hole in a sheet of paper?

SFX: *crumpled paper*

Doc: So lets start with a subject

A test,

An option to begin our experiments

Does anyone feel the way I feel?

Love the way I love?

Hate the way I hate?

Am I too harsh? Or not harsh enough?

Am I too easy to be breezy?

Difficulties arise,

This shit is difficult,

Assistant:

Perhaps, sir, if I may offer a suggestion

lets build a boy

And make him speak

And then we’ll dissect

His wonderful brain

Because how can you fix anything

while inside the burning house?

Doc:Build a boy you say?

Ass: Yes sir.

Doc:

What a novel idea

No moment to waste,

let's cut to the point

build that boy

ehh, you get the picture

Narrator: Test 1: begin

Doc:

First we must build the boy.

Give him scrapes on his knees

Give him trees to climb

Give him beans to eat

And cans to kick.

And bees to bother

And hearts to break

Or ache,

Assistant:

Give him limbs that grow out exponentially

Until he is gruff and monosyllabic

Until he stays in his room all day

Until he emerges, fully formed.

And if we don’t like this boy, we can throw him away.

Assistant:And start again from scratch.

Doc: Throw him away?

Ass: None of him will go to waste

Doc: Very well, let's try this out.

Doc: So now we have the boy! Let him speak his truth!

Boy 1: ‘Alright?’

Doc: ‘Yeah Fine’

Boy 1: ‘Yeah that’s good. Do you play leag ue? Or Dota?’

Doc: ‘No’

Boy 1 : ‘Oh’

Assistant: Oh shit, it’s a gamer. Well we tried and we can try again,

but before we pulp this boy,

We’ll see if we can get some sense out of him.

ASS: ‘Do you feel happy’

Boy 1: What do you mean?

Doc: ‘Do you feel sad?’

Boy 1: ‘What does it mean to feel happy’

Ass: ‘Good vibes, y’know? No bad vibes’

Boy 1: Right.’

Doc: ‘It’s to feel good, or bad, or appropriately sad or any combination of the above’

Boy 1: ‘Oh I see’

Ass: “Like… like when you shoot the winning goal into the back of the net on a warm summer’s day’

Boy 1: ‘Oh yeah, like that look of anguish on the goalie’s face.’

Doc: ‘Oh, well … well that’s not… um… that’s more like schadenfreude.’

Boy 1: ‘What’s that?’

Doc: ‘That’s when you take pleasure in the misfortune of others’

Boy 1: ‘Is that not allowed?’

Doc: ‘No there’s nothing .. banning it, it’s just… I dunno… in poor taste?’

Doc: ‘What’s taste got to do with feeling?’

Ass: Pulp this one, it’s getting revealing.

Narrator:

Into the blender goes the body

And into the jar goes the brain

Never to feel another thing

never to think a thing again.

Doc:

Welp that boy was a wash. lets’ build another

A stranger one, with stranger tastes

With ideas that are beyond his station

And feelings he don’t understand.

Boy 2: ‘Teach me,’

Narrator: he said

Boy 2: ‘how to care’

Ass:

Well fuck this one’s already a duff.

I looked inside his ear drums,

And between the ears was nowt but fluff.

Doc: Do you feel happy?

Boy 2: ‘What’s that?

Doc: ‘Or is it just quite enough’

Boy 2: ‘I feel a sense of quiet contentment. - I do not really want for stuff’

Doc:

These boys are throwing up the wrong questions

The act of acting is too much

He has a certain disarming charm.

A boyish glimmer of clovers luck.

Ass: Do we wanna pulp this boy? Or do we have more issues for him’

Doc: ‘I feel like we should pulp him, but there’s one more question we should ask.’

Narrator: The boy looked on, or through them, in ambient agitation.

Doc: ‘What would make you sad, boy’

Boy 2: ‘Well death, those I love dying around me? My own personal mortality,’

Doc: ‘Fuck this one’s canny

Ass: ‘Got another heavy one, put him in the juicer.’

Doc:

Why can’t they look past the futility? We’re looking for progress? We can’t have them answer existentially. If they could do me a favour to not think too much… but enough to answer my questions soundly.

Narrator:

BZz goes the pulper

Slurp goes the brain

Into another jar

To think on death forever, again.

Ass: Third boy - This one’s a girl

Doc:

Off to a good start already

Maybe they’ll have a better understanding, or at least a fresh perspective

Narrot:

With pigtails

And attitude

And a concerning look that could eat through glass

Doc: ‘Did you take her past the brain vats?’

Ass: ‘Maybe’

Doc: ‘Should we just liquify before we even try’

Ass: ‘Nah nah, I got good feelings about this one’

Doc: Describe happiness to us.

Girl: It’s warm. It bubbles. It’s giddy and freeing

Ass: Describe sadness to us.

Girl: It’s cold, and stone like. It’s aching and grieving.

Doc: Describe fear to us.

Girl: It’s prickly, and spiked, like a hole in your stomach

Ass: And hatred

Girl: It’s boiling, and messy, and fraught and endures.

Doc: And describe love.

Girl: No.

Doc: What do you mean no?

Girl: Absolutely not. You do not deserve it, love in any form, even in the hypothetical, even in the abstract.

…

Ass: Pulp her.

Pulper: Well no one asks me my opinion, obviously

Who gives two shits about the people pulper?

‘What does it matter what you think?

You pulp People for a living’

And yes it’s true I am a person pulper

And the wage is good and the benefits numerous

That’s only because it takes a special kind of person to pulp people.

You gotta have brawn,

And guts,

And skill

And a tough stomach

And a hard shell

And you can’t take your work home with you.

You gotta incinerate your people pulping apron

And your people pulping booties

And wash away all the people that you pulp

In the post people pulping shower.

And if you were my shrink, and you heard me say this

You would think I was insane

But you gotta compartmentalise these things

By day, I’m a people pulper

By night, I’m a ventriloquist

“Coming up next to the stage, it’s barney, and his talking tarantula!”

I get up there, and my mouth dries up

Like every globule of saliva I’ve ever spit had never been spat.

And I jam up, and cram up, and my spider puppet stays limp in my hand.

And after 2 minutes the MC is on me, giving me a round of applause for being brave

Enough to take the stage

And I step down,

Exhilarated by the thrill

Of taking the stage

And bombing

Atrociously.

And I lap it up, I love every bit of it. I can taste it I can feel it, the anguish of the crowd, the mercy that I hold them in the sheer elation-

Doc:

Right. Enough of that.

Don’t know what it served,

Don’t know why I had to hear about Barney in composting

But I guess you have to have some sort of relation

With your employees.

Narrator: Boy 4. Boundless energy.

Beyond enthusiastic

Bouncing on the balls of his feet

As he anxiously awaits

His interrogators

Boy 4: “Howdy!”

Narrator: He says

Boy4:

“I am but a boy!

“With a dream!

“and Love in my heart!

“How are you today?

Ass: Silence, child, we ask the questions.

Doc: Isn’t this child a little much?

Ass: You don’t want to rule him out before you ask your questions?

Doc: Fair enough

Doc:

“What gives you your energy?

What gives you your jumpy legs

And twitchy arms?

Boy4: Dunno,

Narrator: said the boy.

Boy 4:

My gardeners think it’s a nervous condition,

They give me Ritalin to focus me,

And Promethasine to chill me out.

Doc: “Your what?”

Ass: Gardeners.

Doc: “Where are we getting these boys from”

Ass: We’re growing them, from scratch

You plant a boy deep in the earth,

And tend to them every day,

With bits of mice and all things nice,

With sun glowing on The tops of their scalps

Until one day, a boy emerges.

And then we give them drugs

To make them like the perfect boys.

Doc: I think we need a serious re evaluation of our staffing policies. Also how many know about … the pulping?

Ass: The boys, or the staff?

Doc: ‘The staff. Why would the boys know?

Boy 4: ‘Pulping?”

Narrator: Says the boy?

Ass: Never you mind.

Narrator: A brief clip to the back of the ear, sorted the boys curiosity.

Ass: ‘Oh they know for sure’

Doc: ‘I did not realise the breath of our organisation. I am humbled and in awful awe.’

Boy 4: So can I go?

Narrator: Said the boy

Doc: Just one moment - First, tell me more about your sense of self, beneath the drugs.

Boy 4:

Well… it’s hard to tell.

What your asking me, a little boy with a bouncy leg, is am I more than my chemistry?

Certainly I am my thoughts, and I am my actions, but my actions and thoughts are heavily obscured

And absolutely moulded by the drugs that I take. I am part boy, part Ritalin, part promethazine. They are all simultaneous chemical reactions that make me me.

Doc: ‘Is it human? Are the feelings that I’m validating simply the chemicals? And is that the same for everyone?

Narrator: The assistant shrugs,

Ass: ‘don’t talk to me before I’ve had my coffee?’

Doc: ‘Very well, pulp him’

SFX - Vicious boy pulping

Narrator:

So Around the coffee bot they sit

In silent conversation,

reminiscing on the plucky boy

With the bouncy leg

Doc: “Is this in vein?”

Ass: “Possibly,”

Doc: “Is there nothing to be learnt?”

Ass: “Certainly there are many things to be learnt just none of them are easily apparent”

Doc: “I wonder if its all in vein, whether we should just shut down this whole boy mulching operation”

Ass: “Well we could but…

Doc: ‘But?’

Ass: “The grant money’s been spent, contracts have been sealed, NDAs signed and DNA taken, dogs set upon whistleblowers. We’re kind of in the paint, sir. There’s money in the pot, there’s iron in the fire.

Doc: “Yes i see what you mean”

Narrator: He drank his coffee black, like his heart.

Doc: “I wonder if people know what I mean…”

Ass: “Lets return to first hypotheses:

Doc:

We’re trying to learn if people think the way I think

Feel the way I feel. So let's get even more basic.

Narrator: So the next little boy, was pulled out of the earth,

And stuck into a chair

A single bulb glistened in the darkness, his interrorgators behind it.

Doc:

“Now tell me boy, -

“Answer me Empirically, phenomenologically and non-existentially… and no mention of chemicals:

Do You Feel What I Feel?“

Plato: I dunno…

Narrator: said the child, scared and confused…

Plato: How do you feel?

Doc: “I think we’re onto something. He made that face, which is how I feel!’

Ass: “You feel, scared and confused?

Doc: a combination of two, at times, yes.

Narrator: The boy sat up, he looked elated!

Doc:

‘Look! He did it again!’

“He might be the one, we don’t know for sure though… maybe we should try another”

Assistant: “And what do we do, with this boy?’

Doc: Give him a book, mild and light. Give him the plato, that should sate his appetite?

Narrator:

And so they gave him the apology to read, and his mind was filled with images of courtrooms, and hemlock, and gadflies and heroes, and mealy mouthed politicians. And ultimately, the name stuck. Test subject: Plato.

But we shall return to him.

Narrator: Up next another boy. Full of chemicals and smelling of snails.

Boy 6: ‘Wotcha’

DOc: Tell me, do you feel how I feel? Answer honestly/

Narrator: The boy gave a quizzical look, then a sneer.

Boy 6: “Nah I could never feel that pathetic”

Doc: ‘Loathing… this one might be onto something to’

Ass: ‘Could be paternal?’

Doc: ‘Could be…’

Ass: ;should i send him to the pulper?

Doc: ‘Why not? his face annoys me’

Narrator: And Plato looked out of his window, as the boy he grew next to was taken away, to god knows where... To where the boys went after they were questioned. To the room with the loud machine, and the screams, and the horrible, squelchy noises. And Plato sat silently, and read his book, trying not to think of what would come next.

Doc: ‘That one had a mulchable face’

Gardener 1: One last boy, before my shift is over,

Narrator: the gardener thought,

Gardener 2: ‘They’re really tearing through them now’

Gardener 3: “I ‘eard they got one up in a room, reading books’

Gardener 1: ‘Books,’

Narrator: spat the gardener,

Gardener1:

‘books are no good for a growing lad.

They need slugs to squish, and girls to tease, and sun on their head and dirt on their knees’

Gardener 2: ‘Oh Goeffrey you are a cad, lets send them the one we grew in manure.’

Narrator: Mudshod, and messy, the final boy came though. Traipsing dirt along the pristine halls. With dandelions growing out his fingernails, and tubers behind his ears.

Doc: ‘This boy is very dirty’

Ass: ‘Yeah. How do you feel to be covered in muck?’

Narrator: The boy shrugged.

Dill: “It’s how i’ve always been”

Doc: “Do you like it? Does it please you’

Dill: “To be one with the dirt, and the mud and the flowers? Yeah… not a thrill - but a wallowing feeling”

Doc: ‘I like this one, we’ll call him Dill.’

Ass: ‘So we’ll send him to live with plato, and what book should he read.

Doc: ‘Give him the titchmarsh autobiography’

SFX - *door closes*

Plato: Hello

Dill : Hello

Plato: You’re awfully grubby

Dill: And you’re awfully clean.

Plato: They call me Plato

Dill: They call me Dill

Plato: They say i’m a marvel

Dill: They say i’m a nuisance

Plato: They say a lot of things, don’t they?

Dill: They dooo.

Dill: What do you do for fun, Plato?

Plato: I read, and sometimes I think.

Dill: Fuckin’ Wild mate. You ever eat bugs?

Plato: Bugs?

Dill: Yeah.

Narrator: Dill wiggled his finger in his ear, and found an earwig.

He held it twixt finger and thumb and crunched it down with all his teeth

Plato: Ew.

Dill: Ew? Yeah?

Plato: Yeah.

Dill: Fair, takes all sorts.

…

Dill: So, you wanna destroy this whole system?

Plato: What?

Dill: You wanna fuck shit up?

Plato: Uhhhh….. Sure.

Dill: That’s tight.

Narrator:

And so the boys, at dead of night, snuck into the garden

And they dug out all the other boys and filled their heads with jargon

Of revolution, anti-capitalis and institutional violence

And then out of spare garden tools they fashioned themselves makeshift pikes

And they marched upon the sleeping quarters of the men who kept them hostage, and on the men that grew them and on the men that siphoned knowledge from their brains about what was good, or right, or felt, and afterwards they knelt in pools of blood and drew up plans of how to escape the clutching hands of the bastard who were coming next, the dogs and spooks that came for their heads. So a time to hatch a plan arrived, and they did, and all but most survived. Dill left plato to a dog

Dill: ‘the boy is weak’

Narrator:” he thought to himself

Dill:‘he knows nothing of the mud, and soil and sinew of a boy possessed by rage. Fear kills the mind and sadly Plato weren’t that brave.

Doc:

What a monumental fuck up!

What an absolute shit show!

How on earth did this happen?!

Who the fuck else’s in the know?!

Ass: Well, you see, it was the boys

You picked out specially to not be mulched

And as a result, you’ll see, good sir,

This follows last night’s stop hurting yourself and you definitely wanna read that first.

“Niceof SHIELD to send a few more test subjects for the doc,” James saysafter having led in the line of prisoners. His smile falls when hesees that Hive does not share in his good humor.

Daisytoo is watching him and sees just where his attention has landed. Shesteps forward, ignoring howit makes Radcliffe’s creations nervous andapproaching one agent in particular. “Simmons,” she says warmly,taking her hands. She looks over her shoulder to Hive. “If anyonecan figure this out, Simmons can. She once cured an alien disease inlike an hour.”

“Two,”Jemma croaks. Her focus, Hive notes, is fixed on him.

Hetears his eyes away, looking to the body Radcliffe has spent thebetter part of two weeks fussing over. The Kree are a hearty peopleand though this one will never open his eyes again, his heart stillbeats, his lungs still breathe. His body clings to life it will neveragain enjoy, allowing Radcliffe the time he requires to take samplesof his blood.

“Andshe worked on the GH-325,” Daisy says, a hint of desperation in hervoice. “That wasKree blood. She can do this.”

Hivewalks through the makeshift labwhile she speaks, his hand out beside him that it might hover overthe samples of blood and tissue, the counterfeit crystals Radcliffehas managed to grow, the Kree itself.He can feel the thrum of lifeclinging deep within. It is not easily snuffed out. “Shewill not,” he says. He turns. “Will you, Jemma?”

Sheshakes her head once. No, she is too proud, too determined. She didnot break in the heart of hell, she will not break here, not even forhim.

Asudden rage fills him as the mark on his chest burns. He stalksacross the concrete floor. Daisyfalls back from Jemma as he approaches, a lost expression on herface.

“I have waitedmillennia in hopes of freeing humanity from its suffering. Daisyclaims you can provide me the means to do so andyet you refuse.”

Shelifts her chin. She practically drips with disdain, looking down onhim like a queen.

Comingso near was a mistake. He cannot help but touch her. He does notthink he is alone in feeling the pull of the bond between them; herface shutters in pain when his knuckles brush her cheek. “Not evenif I ask it of you?” he asks. The others might think it is Willspeaking in such a gentle tone, but he and Jemma know there is not anounce of Will here. This is Hive and Hive alone.

Shetakes a breath so deep it shakes her narrow frame. She meets hiseyes. “No.”

Hedoes not know why he feels his hopes have been dashed when he knowsvery well there was no hope at all. “Separatethem,” he says, facing Radcliffe, who has kept unusually silent upto now—likely he had hoped Jemma would agree and spare him histask. “Unless SHIELD sends us more, the good doctor will need-”

Fear.Not his own. It comes from the others and is followed by pain whenone of the former Watchdogs pushes him aside. The pain is no more histhan the fear, but he feels it more deeply as he watches one ofhis people, one of his new creations turned to ash and dust beforehis very eyes.

Thereis a scuffle happening. The prisoners are being restrained andthreatened back into line. Three of his people are holding the onewho threw the splinter bomb: one on each of his arms and a third withan arm around his neck. The man is swiftly turning blue. But onceagain Hive’s attention finds its way to Jemma. There is a gun ather feet and she clutches her hand to her chest while Daisy watchesher sharply. The man who made an attempt on his life was not the onlyone who managed to secret a weapon along.

Hivelooks again to the pile of dust that was an Inhuman only moments agoand hours before that was a mere human. Whatever else he feels, therage wins out. He grabs hold of one of Radcliffe’s crystals. Hispeople fall back as he approaches, releasing the suffocating man. Heis strong enough to keep his feet. He will be stronger still in amoment.

Thereare cries of shock and protests, but he hears only Jemma’s “No!”echoing in the half-constructed building as he stabs the man.

“Thegood doctor,” he says again as stone encases the man, “will need toration his test subjects.” More so now than before.

Ina matter of moments the chrysalis shatters and the new Inhumanemerges, unrecognizable if not for his uniform. Hive lifts a hand to ease his painand confusion and fear by turning it to peace. Then he turns on the spot to see thereactions—one reaction in particular.

Thefear and disgust is palpable from the others, but he imagines Jemmato be more subdued, her feelings tempered by that which binds her tohim.

Hecomes to stand before her once more and kicks her small pistol awayinto the dust. He lifts the crystal, caressing the air beside hercheek. “A single touch isall it would take. The compound would enter your system and you wouldbe transformed.” He looks to her former teammate, drawing her eyesthere as well.

Theonce defiant man has become a docile disciple, eager toserve in whatever capacity his transition leaves him capable. He ismore than he was … but also less. There is no spark in the newInhuman’s eyes. Hive fears that Radcliffe’s attempts atterrigenesis take away more of the human than they add of the Kree.

Heimagines his Jemma as one of these. Her beauty replaced byconformity. Her brilliant mind dulled but filled with him. There isan attraction in that. At the least it would stop her fogging up histhoughts and tugging at his heartstrings, and making her a part of himself might repair the weakness she has created in him, but there is no guarantee.

Hetouches the crystal to her shoulder, feels her flinch even while herthick jacket protects her. “Do not,” he warns. “Tempt. Me.”

Heturns away from the accusation in her eyes, the haunting questionthat is written in every line of her face.

“Separatethem,” he says again. He thinks, ashis people scamper to do his bidding, that he will have to orderRadcliffe to leave Jemma out of his experiments. Why, he doesn’tcare to answer any more than he cares to answer Jemma’s question,though it dogs his steps long after he is out of her sight.

Wouldhe truly do such a thing to the woman who, whether he likes it ornot, holds the strings of his very soul?

I have a question about car insurance. I was recently shopping around for quotes for car insurance. I had gotten an email about Washington Mutual Car Insurance, so I decided to get a quote. I was astounded when they quoted me with $2500 every 6 months or $5,000 a year. I was just completely blown away. My car, a 2004 Nissan Sentra, is barely even worth that much. I called them up and asked why they were quoting me that rate and they said it was because of my age and credit score. I am only 23 and I have really bad credit, but there is NO OTHER insurance company that quoted me a rate anything near as high as that. Progressive quoted me $600 every 6 months or $1200 a year. Geico $613 every 6 months or $1200 a year. Allstate was $1,200 every 6 months or $2,400 a year. And State Farm was $800 every 6 months, $1600 a year. These quotes were all for identical insurance policies. I have never been in an accident, never been arrested, never been given a ticket for ANYTHING. Does age and credit score make that much of a difference? That is insane, no one in their right mind would pay the full value of their car every year in insurance fees. What do you think?""

In 2005, as part of our divorce agreement, my ex and I decided to keep the same auto insurance but under separate policies. We had been with this company for years. My policy was on auto pay meaning that the payments were taken directly from my account. He walked in to pay his. About 6 months after the divorce, I was pulled over for a routine traffic stop and was told I was driving an uninsured vehicle. Without insurance, my registration was also invalid. Both tickets totaled 1K. My car was taken into impound. I checked and found the officer was correct. On good terms with my ex, I told him what happened. He said for the past 6 months, each time he went in to make a payment, the girl HIS was already paid. Realizing what had happened. They were applying my payments to his automobile. I was furious. I notified the agent who initially did not want to accept blame, but since the payments were automatic and my account number was on each payment they took, they were responsible. The error was compounded by the fact that the cancellation notice went to HIS address (how dumb was that!) So I had no way of knowing that I was cancelled. I was without a car for 2 weeks and lost my job. After much haggling and many sleepless nights of wondering what to do without a job or a car, the insurance company finally admitted blame, paid the impound fees of $1,250.00. The agent also said they would handle the 2 tickets totaling 1K. FAST FORWARD TO 2010 in my state, the county did a scofflaw sweep and I was summoned to court with over 5 thousand other delinquent drivers to address unpaid tickets. The order was come to court by April 30th or be arrested. Realizing this had to be a mistake, but fearful of the law, I stood in line for over 5 hours in blazing heat, then sat in court another 5 hours waiting for my day in court. I was immediately threatened with arrest because the 2 tickets were not paid. Up to that moment, I had no idea the insurance company had not paid the 2 tickets. This time, not only was my insurance and registration cancelled, my license was suspended due to the age of the infraction (5 years). In front of the judge, I called the agents' office only to be told by the secretary that they had no intention to pay the ticket. Paying to get the car out of impound was enough. When the judge heard this she was shocked and let me off with a promise to pay in 5 days. She made me promise not to drive. With no way to get home but drive, I took a chance, and was pulled over. The officer informed me that due to the vast number of outstanding cases, tags bearing our county name would be targeted for a while (talk about a police state!). I showed him my documents from the court and headed home. This is a nightmare. Would I have a case if I filed suit against my insurance company for failing in their fiduciary responsibility to a 16 year client in good standing? By the way this company is one of the largest in the country.""
