See the thing about Cecil and Reigen is that one of them was actually a tumblr sexyman and the other absolutely was not.
The thing about the Once-ler and Sans is that one of them was The Original Tumblr Sexyman™ and the other is the only character that has ever come close to replicating and/or surpassing him.

"Carlos, if you could just pause your experiment for a second--if you could only hear me out, hear my hypothesis! I think once you understand the science of the situation, you--" Carlos opened the door. He was crying. She had never seen him cry. He was overwhelmed and unsure of how to express his emotions, since he usually only did so in carefully worded sentences, not with water from his body. "The science of the situation?" he snarled. "That Otherworld. I was trapped there, Nilanjana. I couldn't see Cecil for ten lonely years. I was kept away from the people I love, in that desolate place where you never get hungry and you never have to drink water and so you never live. It is a place that devours. It is a place that is empty. That is the science of the situation, and I study it so I can fix it. Only I can do that. Only these experiments can do that. I'm sorry, Nilanjana; I'm not going to stop so you can tell me what science is."

#Tyto listens to WtNV#spoiler warning I guess for a book that came out a few years ago now#anyway yeah hi I finished the book#the resolutions to the plot and to Nils' character arc were pretty good. nothing to write home about but fun and serviceable#I personally get annoyed whenever a story pulls a ''you thought this romance would end with these two TOGETHER? lol NOPE''#like we get it it's more realistic for whirlwind romances to end in a breakup and sometimes it's better for people to just stay friends#but firstly this isn't real life; it's fiction. with narrative devices and such.#and secondly WtNV of all media does NOT get to preach about realistic relationship trajectories when its lead fell in love at first sight#lmao I'm just saying. I'm not MAD about it or anything it just made me roll my eyes.#ANYWAY. that aside: it was good. and I do genuinely like the friendship Nilanjana builds up with Darrell at the end#but obviously the real star of the show was Carlos and the completely unprecedented character depth that they smothered him in.#not ONLY recontextualizing over a year's worth of the podcast but ALSO saddling him with LAYERS of guilt over the events in this book#he *KILLED* the *GODDAMN* *CENTIPEDE*#after his beautiful little speech about not killing things just because we don't understand them!#he was just SO traumatized by his time in the Otherworld and SO afraid for his family after Janice nearly got Got that he KILLED IT!!!#and THEN!!!! not only do they find out that the centipede wasn't responsible for the destruction!!#but it turns out it was HIS OWN MACHINE THE WHOLE TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!#his attempts to keep everyone safe were what actually caused the danger!!!! AUGH HE WAS ONLY TRYING TO HELP#HE'S JUST SCARED AND HE WANTS EVERYONE TO BE SAFE AND NOT EXPERIENCE THE SAME HORRORS HE DID AUGHDUSHGHDH#...anyway yeah back to my regularly scheduled episode listening tomorrow

Night Vale Summer Literature Camp au
(Dpxdc w/ a dash of wtnv)
Brief plot setup / background: Danny and Damian are twins, they were both trained to be co leaders of the loa. Danny and Damian had a very rocky relationship before coming to live with the Wanyes because of the fact that Danny had "specialized training", which was really Danny being experiment on with Lazarus water. During these experiments Danny and Respawn met, Danny for a long time considered Respawn as more of a brother to him than Damian, they still consider each other brothers but now Danny actually considers Damian a brother. One of the experiments done on Danny was an attempt to replace his blood with Lazarus water which made him need to drink a shit ton of Lazarus water for his body to keep producing blood, which is also how he managed to survive the portal accident of this au. On the summer of their 14th birthday (I headcannon their birthdays to be during the summer) Danny had begged their father to let him to go to a literature summer camp in a small town called Night Vale with his friends, Sam and Tucker, a program which lasts the entire summer. Bruce is reluctant to let him go because of the whole Lazarus water thing and so is Damian because it would be the first time they would be without each other for longer than a few days, but eventually other members of the family and other leaguers convince Bruce to let him go because Danny might develop an unhealthy dependency on them if they don't let him be independent.
As it turns out a whole class from a school called Casper High would be attending the camp as well. Chaos insues when Danny, Sam, Tucker, Jazz, and Jazz's cousin, Pearl, find an ancient portal underneath the town accidentally turning it on causing Danny who was standing in it to turn into a halfa, now the portal is premently turned on letting all kinds of creatures through.
(Sidenote: I have yet to listen to the actual Welcome to Night Vale podcast, the portal underneath the town came from me. I'm thinking about changing the town to Amity or just let it be a random ass town because of this. No WTNV characters will appear Night Vale is just the setting.)
Here's some fake tweets to go with this.

Audio Drama Sunday - 7th April ✨
Happy #AudioDramaSunday! I’ve had such a long week - here’s what made it better!🌈
👻 @tellnotalespod (S2E7) I loved the April Fool’s episode, it really brightened up my day. And the main ep was lovely too. I do so love a parakeet and the idea that some kids can actually see ghosts 🥺 but what the hell was Frank doing at the end there? Please can this be the thing that pushes Leo back into Julia’s (arms) and Riley’s circle of friendship????? Please!
🌲 @hellofromthehallowoods (146) Danielle!!!!! I am rubbing my grubby little hands together waiting for more information on how Clem and Danielle came to be Like That. The fun thing about this ?time skip is that it makes me want to be omnipresent in the narrative too. I need to know what’s happening to everyone everywhere!!
🎙️WTNV (245) Maybe I have father-related trauma, but I am HUNGRY for the Grandad Gershwin lore.
🏛 @the-mistholme-museum (FRANTIC) ohh I was wondering when the Queen was going to make an appearance (Hero is too good not to be featured LBR) but now it’s happened I’m scared!! I think the next episode is the finale and I have no idea what kind of ending is going to emerge!
🔎 @224bbaker Fawx and Stallion released the second part of their Q+A which was so much fun to listen to. We love self-indulgent show runners, particularly when we all want the same things (AKA lava-filled cage matches). Please be really cool and intelligent like me and support the S2 crowdfund! I need the case of the Birthday Boy or I’ll perish.
🍾 @ameliapodcast (30) This was such a cute episode!! Not going to lie, if the first human voice I heard was Amelia’s, I wouldn’t be mad! Not sure that they’re going to get them back as a client though . . .
🍎 @notquitedeadpod (XXX-XXXII) help, oh my god, listening to Alfie talk to Cas is actually destroying me emotionally 😭 I hate how evasive (and manipulative??) Neige is being. I KNOW there’s something huge that hasn’t yet been revealed and I’m not ready to find out what that is!
Hope everyone has had a good week! I'm so excited for more Camlann next week and I think The Silt Verses is returning too!!

It's quarter after 1 in the morning, there's a Tumblr Sexyman Poll, and it's MY turn to talk about Welcome to Night Vale.
I listened to WtNV back when it first came out, through the first three or four years. I took a break, then caught up again just after the 100th episode. Then I took ANOTHER break... and caught up last year on episode 210, right before they went on break for July 2022. Now I'm behind again by a half a year.
I say that in order to make the point that I am, more or less, STILL listening to Night Vale, 10 Years Later.
Welcome to Night Vale is extraordinary. Much like Cecil did with Carlos, I listened to the first episode and I fell in love, instantly.
There have been some amazing plot lines and some not so good ones. Some great reoccurring characters and some who are boring. Some earworm weather songs, some drop dead funny jokes, and some deep, true, heartfelt love.
I remember literally SCREAMING when Cecil came back, holding a cat.
I cried at Carlos and Cecil's wedding.
"Death is the end only if you believe the story is about you"
"Alligators. Can they kill your children? Yes."
...I can't think of more quotes at this exact moment but this represents the dichotomy well.
I love Night Vale. The small desert town where the lights twinkle overhead as we all pretend to sleep.
And all of us will wait together, in the rain, for a bus that comes every month twice a month, until there is no longer a bus to wait for.
And that bus will take us to Night Vale.

I really loved WTNV way back when, but I fell off of it pretty early on and in the back of my mind I always wanted to get back on, but there were so many episodes that it was daunting, and now there's over 150 and counting.
But now that's not an excuse anymore because 1) I binged four forty-episode seasons of The Magnus Archives before the fifth came out, and 2) I've been steadily working my way through all of Campaign 2 of Critical Role, which is 141 episodes that average about 4 hours each.
...
I'm coming Cecil I just gotta finish up with the Mighty Nein first.

bulk i absolutely need to know what you think about carlos fitting into the current wtnv arc
‘Carlos looked at the setting sun. “I used to think it was setting at the wrong time,” he said, “but then I realized that time doesn’t work in Night Vale, and that none of the clocks are real. Sometimes things seem so strange, or malevolent, and then you find that, underneath, it was something else altogether. Something pure, and innocent. —
We understand the lights. We understand the lights above the Arby’s. We understand so much.
But the sky behind those lights – mostly void, partially stars? That sky reminds us we don’t understand even more.
Goodnight, Night Vale. Goodnight.”’
— Episode 25, One Year Later
Carlos is someone who knows what the power of knowledge holds. City Council keeps a close eye on him (as mentioned in It Devours), fears him even, for what he could be/ have been— had he not fallen in love with the town and Cecil.
Carlos could have very well been Lubelle— but he fell in love with the town, the people, and Cecil. I’ve spoken before about Carlos’ loneliness, and how Cecil being his friend and having an interest in him and his work really altered the course of his life (as he’s mentioned a few times). Carlos literally fell in love with a walking and talking mystery. He’ll never completely understand Cecil. Discovery is glorious and worthy of celebration— but there is also the thrill of the chase. The mysticism and glory of something you can’t dissect let alone know how. There is a poetic sadness in spending so much time and dedication into figuring something out, only to lose sight of why it was so fascinating in the first place. Demystifying. The itch you get in your brain once there is nothing left for your brain to focus on and work through.
The town still wears meat crowns and creates bloodstone circles but do not know who or why they worship. Why do our interests, our beliefs, ours facts bend and warp with time? Is a fact not just an echo of knowledge until something, or someone, comes along to disrupt it? That’s the way knowledge works. Thats the way beliefs work.
I think Carlos’ role in this arc is to bridge that gap between factual analysis and mystification of the mundane. Carlos is one of the few people in town who understands both sides of this struggle— and i think he is going to be forced to pick a side that explores who he is as a person first, instead of a scientist.
His goals might have been similar to Lubelle’s at first, given that he had no attachments other than his work, and came from the same university— but he always used science to help better a situation in town. The one time he realized he was hurting it with his ‘solution’ in It Devours! he immediately stopped. It was always people focused— whereas Lubelle has already demonstrated she doesn’t much care for what her discoveries might do to the people of the town.
Idk I started rambling — but basically, with the culmination of a science institution, the introduction of a new (?) god, the reemergence of a preexisting religion, the feelings of rightfully opinionated people in town and one man who has experience with all four things…. he’s definitely there bridge some sort of gap. carlos is the town hero after all. ill write more abt it when im less tired— but i have so many thoughts on how human beings dont have as many awe inspiring experiences anymore/ when things are so easily explained you lose the joy and wonder of the thing/ how what is easily known to us now was not 5, 10, 50 years ago etc etc.
and i think carlos learned that very early on

WTNV quick rundown - 100 - Toast
I'm not lying when I say this episode contains almost if not every single character we've been introduced to thus far.
More rundowns here!
I know many of you have a few things you’d like to say. So let me start things off. Welcome to Night Vale.
This episode's focus is on Cecil and Carlos' wedding, or at least the after ceremony toast section.
The first person to speak is Leonard Burton, ex radio host, ex Cecil's boss and very confused as to why he's 'suddenly' there and apparently making a toast. He has no idea why he's there, but comments that Cecil looks like he hasn't aged a day since he started to work for Leonard.
The FOW also gives a toast, though she mostly talks about herself. She is covered in blood and is able to drink despite not having a mouth. She is allergic to mice, so recommends that people eat them themselves if they want to keep infestations at bay.
Diane's speech is very quick because Josh has a dance recital and grew several extra legs just for the occasion.
John Peters (you know, the farmer?) comments that he believes the whole world is just a manifestation of his inability to believe that nothing actually exists but congrats anyway.
Deb plugs Ritz Crackers in her toast.
Michelle and Maureen give a speech together. Michelle says she guesses that being happy is popular and isn't that upset that she's also happy and therefore like everyone else. She also says she went to a Katy Perry concert where Katy peeled off her own skin, plucked out her heart and batted it towards her backup dancers. Maureen says she's not angry any more and she once tried to be happy when she was 13 but gave up when she noticed everyone was copying her.
Maggie and Donald Penebaker give an almost normal toast except it's still phone like and ends with reminding everyone to pay their electric bills.
Kevin and Lauren also do a toast together, via videolink. Lauren says she wandered dry-lipped and starving through an endless looping desert until finally coming upon Desert Bluffs Too where it was explained to her that Strex is no longer in charge, Kevin is. Kevin mentions how he's been told that they'll all attack him if he tries to come back to NV and that as welcoming as that sounds he's far too busy. He's also obviously gleeful about Lauren's misfortune and new status under him. They then 'smile' which causes mass panic and a cry to turn the video off.
Melony says she's fixed Computer, who prints out a picture of a gift wrapped box. Earl says he made the cake and was happy to do so. Melony says she has no idea who he is, even though he's sitting next to her and Earl says they've been friends for years and came to the wedding together. Given that Melony forgets Cecil whilst talking to him, it's likely Earl is right.
During Tamika's speech we hear Basimah calling out admiringly. Tamika reads a book passage.
Dana and Pamela make a speech together, with Pamela being her usual self and Dana translating it into a 'congratulations'.
They then 'move' because of the weather: "Second Song" by Joseph Fink.
Old Woman Josie tells us that Cecil wasn't good at bowling when he joined their team, but he was so friendly and entertaining that they let him stay and he soon got better at it. She also reveals that the Hall of Public Records has a list of everyone's death dates.
Steve's toast is more like a tradiational toast. He says he loves Cecil and Carlos both and is very happy for them.
Carlos talks about how he finds it hard to talk about his feelings because they're not logical facts, which he understands better. He mentions how he had throat surgery and that's why he sounds different now but his feelings are the same. He says he's glad he made that call for personal reasons.
Cecil sings Carlos' praises and says that everything is better now Carlos is there. He also says that Carlos' love of science is inspiring and also deeply erotic.
Stay tuned next for a drunk, newly married couple, long after all the well-wishers have left, piling up bags of garbage and stacking chairs in a rented banquet hall because they want to get their deposit back.
And good night, Night Vale, and every person who can hear my voice. Good night.
Proverb: "It's always darkest before the dawn, we are often reassured by people who are totally wrong about how the sun works."

ben and i were on vc last night ironing out some wtse stuff and we got on the topic of what fear rules desert bluffs too and how that all shakes out. and i've talked before about how it's ruled by the flesh but benny finally asked the pressing question: what about the corruption?
and i'm so glad they brought it up because for a couple days i'd been thinking about how, if at all, the corruption fits into it.
in wtse the fears aren't divided and identified the same way they are in TMA,because the fear designations in that universe were just something smirke and his buddies came up with and not The Real Thing and night vale's universe provides different opportunities for the fears to present themselves in different ways. night vale is ruled by an amalgamation of the beholding and the spiral, for example. not the beholding and spiral jon knows, but close enough to be familiar
and while there are slaughter-y elements to desert bluffs, senseless violence isn't a core tenant. the violence is controlled and purposeful, even if it may not seem necessary to someone outside of the culture. it isn't really violence for violence sake, whether it's for food or decor or worship purposes, there is always an identifiable motive or rational for causing harm
and putting aside the fact they worship a big bug, the joyous congregation does have some of the corruption in it, namely the import it places on community and conformity. the corruption is, after all, an entity that works off the power of love, of belonging to a larger process, of being so entwined with it you let it literally eat you alive.
makes me think of a hive of grinning office workers, whose worth is only measured by their productivity.
but also, in it devours when darryl is showing nilanjana the Eleven Stages of Human Education, it seems like the primary figure killed its family to keep them close
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the line "had a toothy smile—or possible snarl?" always reads to me in the same tone as when people comment about kevin "is that a smile," and given kevin founded the church and stephanie muses they use fox imagery because kevin likes foxes it makes more wonder about kevin's own beliefs about keeping his loved ones close
which then makes me wonder about what someone (i think it was bulk) said to me about kevin not being interested in carlos' work, only the results. more importantly, that kevin wanted carlos to keep finding results, he wanted to keep carlos busy, and he wanted to keep carlos busy to keep carlos in the DOW
one of the first faults carlos has to over come in WTNV is being a workaholic, it's the first complaint cecil has when they start dating. but when carlos goes to the DOW kevin pulls that fault right back out of him, encourages and enables him to keep working. and work is the excuse he gives cecil about why he can't leave. a toxic dynamic forms between kevin and carlos where kevin brings out the worst in carlos in order to keep him there
and thats what the joycon does: it encourages working yourself so hard you have no energy left for anything else and encourages you to keep yourself ignorant except for what the pastor spoon feeds you. and all of this is for the good of the community, the good of the collective
anyway, i'm at that point where i either need to stop or i'll start really getting on my soap box. the point is, dbt is flesh-corruption aligned

The "Changing of the Guard"
So this is a concept I've had difficulty explaining to others, and I'm going to try and explain it.
As someone who uses fictional characters to cope, I invented a system many years back that I still use now, even though my living situation is a lot better.
Essentially, I created a space within my head for all of these characters to live. I described this place briefly in my fic, 'what is this, a crossover fic?' But that's not the focus for this post.
So as these characters are accepted into my head, they have a focus of making sure I stay alive, no matter what. I craft their personalities so that they are *slightly* different from canon, and round out their rough edges if they have any. And I carry them with me.
This mechanic was something I designed where I would put focus into one character at a time, receiving serotonin and coming up with creative ideas involving them. The other characters I've had in the past would still be there, but generally I focused on one comfort character at a time. The thing is, this idea grew quickly in complexity as I retreated into my head while living at my parents place. I don't use this creation I built as a child often anymore, but it is something to fall back on when I'm stressed, anxious, or depressed.
Eventually it developed into a series of rulesets where they would act friendly towards each other, and recognize that the time they were spending with me wasn't permanent. And that when the time came, the main character I was focusing on would be switched out for the next one. All of them recognized that keeping me alive was their priority, and if one character was better suited to looking after me, there were no hard feelings involved. And all of them recognized that in an emergency, I might call upon one of them to help, and that was an okay thing to do.
It's not dissociative, these characters didn't take over my brain. I was always aware of myself, and 100% in control of them. It was maladaptive daydreaming, I think.
But then this other concept developed, the 'Changing of the Guard.' The ritual by which one character would be replaced by another to act as the main support. If I trace my past, I can see when one character shifted to the other.
Papyrus from UT was the first, then Cecil from WTNV, then Aziraphale from GO, Julian from DS9 appeared somewhere between those four, you see what I'm saying.
So for a long time, the narrator was acting as guard, to keep me from doing stupid things, and acting as a voice of reason when stressed. Now, he's no longer in that position. Believe it or not, it's transferred back over to Aziraphale now. There's nothing to note here specifically. In a time of need, I may call upon the narrator again. I can do that, they're all focused on keeping me alive, that's the whole goal. All this to say, I forgot that the concept of 'changing of the guard' is not common among everyone. And I brought up the concept to a few people and got a whole bunch of '??????' in response.
Essentially, the fictional characters I love most take turns holding the line so that I don't make permanent mistakes.
And this is a thing that not everyone does.

ive noticed people tend to take sides in the kevin and carlos dynamic a lot (either people portray carlos as a lot shittier to kevin than he ever was for angst or people make kevin really manipulative to carlos in a way he also never was, the former one seems a more modern wtnv thing and the latter a bigger problem when it first came out) and i think its real sad bc to me . to ME . the fascinating thing about their dynamic is how they both go about it in such a shitty way . and their ways of going about it are both opposite and identical . both of them handled things so badly . they are both so bad at forming genuine connection w each other and i think that is soooo fascinating
