Thinking today about how Shepard's conversation with Charles Saracino in ME1 is yet another example of Ashley disapproving of racism/xenophobia and parties like Terra Firma (samples below!). Still boggles my mind how people call her a space racist tbh

• If you ask him why the party commemorates Armistice Day (the day Shanxi was liberated from the turians) by protesting, the conversation goes like this:

Shepard: You're marking the end of the First Contact War with a protest? Saracino: As we have every year for the last 26 years. The war taught humanity a lesson that some would forget. If we don't stand up for ourselves, no one else will. Shepard (Paragon): I thought the lesson of the First Contact War was that there's other life in the galaxy, and they have opinions too. Saracino: Perhaps so, Commander. But if aliens feel free to express their "opinions" at gunpoint, why shouldn't we? Ashley: We should. But you're just looking for a reason. Saracino: I disagree. We have a backlog of grievances the aliens have ignored. Starting with Shanxi. Ashley: Were you at Shanxi? If not, shut your piehole. OR Shepard (Renegade): Every day I stand up for humanity. Often in the face of bullets. What have you done lately? You really think speeches help? Saracino: We all serve in our own way, Commander. I'm not a soldier, but I can tell the public why they should support your efforts. Ashley: Wearing a lapel on your uniform makes you a hero, huh? You wanna help humanity? Get out of your office and pitch in.

• If you ask him about Terra Firma, the conversation goes like this:

Shepard: I don't know Terra Firma's platform. What do you stand for? Saracino: Our core value is that Earth must "stand firm" against alien influences. Politically, culturally, and --in the worst case-- militarily. Ashley: It's a noble goal. Too bad so many of your supporters are just racists.

She disapproves of Terra Firma looking for ways to justify deliberate conflict with alien species, and gets worked up when Saracino uses Shanxi as a talking point in his own benefit. She, whose family was personally impacted by Shanxi for at least three generations, still refuses to fall for the easy trick of treating it as an excuse for xenophobia. Renegade dialogue options also show that she hates Saracino's guts for being all talk and putting no real effort into supporting humanity. I just love her.

#she's a pragmatic and intelligent soldier who realizes humanity is in a critical position in their interaction with alien cultures #and believes humans need to be smart/cautious in their dealings with the Council #because it's completely predictable (and rational) that the Council would choose self-preservation over helping humans if it came to that #and then ME3 comes around and proves that SHE WAS RIGHT #Ashley Williams defense squad #mass effect #commander shepard

7. What character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because of how the fandom acts about them?

Easy pickings again, it's Garrus. Granted, I wasn't the biggest fan of him either in canon since I didn't like the "no shepard without vakarian" thing they had going on, but the fandom pushes him everywhere, some ppl act like you have to love him and never say anything bad about him, and it's so tiring seeing ppl treat sha///karian as the "canon" ship which is BS. There's more but that's the jist.

12. The unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them.

Jacob is a perfectly fine character with some really shit writing decisions, and tbh, I'm sure most of the people who hate him for the cheating thing never even romanced him anyway to get that scene. He's a normal, well-adjusted guy who can be a good friend to Shepard between all the messy drama from some of the other squadmates, and I've always liked him just fine. so when I entered the fandom and saw all the hate, I was... shocked, but also not tbh.

Plus the Corsairs are really interesting and I always wanted to know more about them.

16. You can't understand why so many people like this thing (characterization, trope, headcanon, etc)

I don't really get the obsession with default femshep. Sure, she's fine and I'm glad she got a default appearance like mshep but... I've never been the biggest fan of her appearance (why are her eyes so big, I sculpted my OC Wren off of her and made the eyes like, 50% smaller I swear) and she's sometimes treated as the canon default, which I never like to see. "Bonus points" if she's a renegade for her enemies, paragon for her friends kinda character. Which again, is fine, but it's tiring seeing it everywhere. I prefer seeing custom sheps anyway.

And I also prefer Mark Meer's voice acting overall.

God to be a male Quarian getting hit on by femshep, should’ve been me, anyway looked him up and apparently he was based on Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, specifically a combo of the two, and considering they both die at the end his ending probably wouldn’t have been too happy. He was also described as a boisterous ladies man, so I guess that’s why he gets excited when someone actually likes him. You wouldn’t have been able to romance him if you were too renegade for him and his goal was to prove that the Geth are now less of a threat. His introduction seems to have been given to Garrus considering they’re similar (shootout with criminals on Omega) maybe Garrus wasn’t gonna return before they cut him?

Also random fact I came across Garrus is 2-4 years younger than Shepard

By the way how is Miranda in your ME3 playthrough?

Glad to know we all collectively are down bad for femshep in here. Oh, to be a barracks bunny for the femdom lieutenant commander, a person could only dream.

Like it doesn't even have to he a full romance or anything, just being Shepard's squeeze toy whenever she's too fed up with this demandinh world outside, and instead would rather spend time with you in this soft bed inside. She'd be absolutely relentless and insatiable, I don't think her libido is ever sated tbh, a lot of times it is the other person insisting that she waits to sleep with them rather than the other way around.

Hell Shepard seems down for it 24/7. You'd get some bullshit job on the Normandy but will spend 90% of your time on her personal deck. The second she boards the ship after a mission, she's requesting your presence upstairs in her qaurters to...debrief you on the aftermisison report, nothing else. Mhm.

I'm just saying I am a simple person and I would put out on the first ever conversation femshep has with me, no renegade or paragon pointchecks. No required time to romance me, and not even locked by a certian level or plot checkpoint. If a woman like her tells me to shut up and bend over after five minutes of meeting me then you know that's exactly what I'd be doing.

Anyway, so back to the main topic.

Miranda is doing well! I saved her sister in ME2 but didn't let her shoot her bestfriend, then I encouraged her to speak to her sister. I took her to the final mission in facing the human reaper and she told the illusive man that she quits after he threw a hissy fit over me destroying the reaper.

In ME3, she asked for some documents from the alliance and I gave it to her. Then I met her again during the Kai Leng chase and she killed her father and saved her sister. Miranda is dandy as far as I'm aware.

And I can't stop thinking about the male Quarian. Ugh. Imagine someone who knows he can't have sex with people but still is a relentless flirt with the ladies, like the clear cardboard faux playboy badge he wears is so pathetic and adorable.

It's like he is using the Johnny Bravo method of hitting on every woman he sees, and eventually, one of them has gotta bite, right?

So for someone like him not to only have his "incel mimicking a chad" strategy work but also hit the jackpot and get the commander Shepard? Hallelujah! Ring the bells! Call your mom and tell her you've fucking made it Ma!!

Because Shepard too can be a bit of a playboy at times, except with the game protagonist logic, we get to be the successful one with the smoothest flirting lines. Now you have two people interested in each other, with one that's an embarrassingly terrible flirt and another who people would pay to sleep with them.

Personally, I really like that he is on the side of the Geth because Tali starts off being hostile to them, and it would've made a perfect chance to view both sides.

His dynamic with Tali would've been very interesting, two people with similar backgrounds and experiences who came to two totally different conclusions on how to handle to the Geth.

Because it is so easy for paragon Shepard to side with the Geth. Like of course you feel sympathy for them, you're human. It wasn't earth they stole from you.

Imagine it. Imagine the outrage if some random species you made steals earth from us and we are forced to move onto fleets. I would've fucking gone full renegade and demanded my planet back immediately.

But because we are just outsiders on the geth problem, we can't relate or have a clear perspective on how the qaurians must feel. We only get to see the most hostile of them and the hate towards the geth. That other admiral was the cloeest thing to a pro-geth quarian but even he was an annoying character who antagonises you and Tali as his introduction in the ME2 loyality mission.

So the male quarian love interest being sympathetic towards the geth would've filled a perfectly empty spot we were missing for the full picture of the geth quarian relationship.

Samara has a similar thing in ME2, where if you're too renegade, she doesn't indulge you in the romance attempt and immediately shuts it off. But if you have very little renegade points then she says your heart is pure and indulges you more, let's you try and convince her and it's so clear she is struggling not to give into the temptation before leaving the room.

The Quarian kink is so real, now I understand why you like Tali so much oh god. Someone willing to experience sickness just to fuck you? Damn that is some determination.

Mass Effect Trilogy Tag

Lovingly borrowed from a great Mass Effect blog @whiskynorocks ya'll should go follow them they're rad as hell and have excellent taste

Been a fan since: I'd heard great things about the series since 3 came out but I never had the opportunity to play it until this year. I can safely say I'm pretty hooked.

Favorite game of the series: 2, without a doubt. There are things I loved about 1 and 3 but 2 stood out to me especially with the writing and how I developed my relationships with my crew. I wasn't thrilled about joining forces with Space Terrorists, but at least I was able to walk away from TIM at the end of it.

MaleShep or FemShep? FemShep, hands down. I do have a BroShep save, but he's not as...invested as FemShep is.

Earthborn, Colonist or Spacer? Colonist or Earthborn for FemShep, Earthborn or Spacer for BroShep

Paragon or Renegade? Heavy on the Paragade. I usually try to go mostly Paragon, but there are some motherfuckers that need slapping

Biotics or Tech? I like Tech but I go Biotics more often than not

Favorite class: Oh Vanguard full stop. Give me a shotgun and biotic charge and I'm up on the front lines gunning down assholes like I was born for it

Favorite companion: Garrus, but also Tali, Wrex, Legion, Kasumi, Zaeed, Vega, and Liara when she didn't sell my body to terrorists

Least favorite companion: Miranda (strictly just due to ability, tbh), Ashley (I saved her a few times, I get that she has a lot of emotional baggage and the way that the Alliance treats her is extremely wrong, but I just can't like her ya'll. I'm sorry. I've tried.)

My squad selection: Who wants to third wheel with me and the Space Kitty? In all seriousness, it's usually Shep, Garrus, and Tali in 1 unless I switch Tali for Kaiden a few times. Or Wrex if I need more fire power lol. In 2, soon as I get Garrus, I tend to keep him around for everything save Tali's trial since I like to bring Legion to that just to be a troll. Mostly, it's just me and the Dream Team. Vega third wheeled a lot in 3, though lol

Favorite in-game romance: Shakarian for the long haul, baby. But Talibrations is also extremely adorable too. My BroShep is hella bi so he's romancing Kaiden after losing Ash in Virmire and he's Damaged™ so maybe Kaiden can fix him

Other pairings I like: Tali/Reeger (that dude was so in love with her it's amazing), EDI/Joker, Wrex/Bakura, Nyreen/Aria, Cortez/Vega

Favorite NPC: Anderson, Councilor Sparatus because he's a dick but he comes through for you in the end, Saren, Nihlus for the five seconds you get to know him, Kirrahe, Nyreen Kandros, Primarch Victus, Aria (she's very hot), the bartender in the Asari bar, Biotic God Volus, Padok Wikks

Favorite antagonist: SOVEREIGN. Hands down, he is the most terrifying thing you encounter in the games. He's just so other, so alien, and so...mechanical. His lines are delivered with this matter-of-fact contempt that is so perfect for a sentient machine. He has no motive other than he just Is. And I love that. Harbinger never shut up, but Sovereign knew when to start and end a conversation. He said his piece and he said nothing more. And that is exactly how you introduce an Eldritch Being.

Favorite mission: Noveria. I loved meeting Lorik, and how the whole thing spirals down from dirty business deals to all out creep-fest when you encounter the Rachni. And the Rachni Queen's voice acting was stellar. She was just sympathetic enough to warrant pause from outright killing her and terrifying enough to consider it.

Favorite loyalty mission: Its a tie in between Garrus and Kasumi. Garrus for how it ties into his relationship with Shepard and just how their death truly affected him and how it reflects on his character (I have only allowed him to shoot Sidonis once, and it was not a good feeling). And Kasumi because dressing Shepard up is always a good time and Kasumi is a sassy, classy lady who lost someone dear to her and giving her that closure she needs makes me happy for her. She deserves pretty things. She's also cute as hell.

Favorite DLC: Either Citadel, Omega (for Nyreen), or Overlord because David's story made me cry. I'm also autistic and the story was handled very well with Shepard being so furiously angry that the Paragon Interrupt was to pistol whip Gavin was very cathartic for me.

Control, Synthesis or Destroy? 100% Destroy. I do not and will not trust the Walmart-brand Alexa that is the Catalyst. That little asshole is dying with the rest of those genocidal machines.

Favorite weapon: The Talon Heavy Pistol. Baby can pack a punch.

Favorite place: I actually really love the beauty of the Ardat Yakshi monastery. I hate that the Reapers destroy it and turn it into someplace so nightmarish but it really was such a beautiful building and felt really peaceful beforehand.

A quote I like: "You exist because we allow it, and you will end because we demand it."

Didn't Have the Heart - ch.9 Comparative Study of the Alliance Dress Uniform

1st we have Kaidan wanting to kill the quarian that nuked the ship Shepard was in (she stops him)

Then we have Shepard suckerpunching him (best renegade option EVER!)

And the rest is a formal meeting with the other memembers of the quarian council, screaming at each other, while we see what my Shep is thinking on the meantime... And that's how we end with what I'm calling "imaginary table sex because Kaidan looks too good in his formal uniform"hahahahhahahahah

I'll leave what I have for this one under the cut because I think my notes are quite funny (but maybe I'm biased ehehehehehe)

Shore Leave - ch.1 Wake me Up

Well... The end of the previous chapter (final one of Didn't Have the Heart) is "The Next Time", so this one had to be "Wake me Up" XDDD

And what happens? Weeeeelllll... She does stay *wink wink* eheheheheh errrrrmmmmm... idk if I can manage to say this in a ladylike way but... In the immortal words of Bo Burnham... She does use him to tickle her throat with XDDDDDDDD let's just say that, this time around, she has the heart to "wake him up"... no words needed XDDDD

Shepard stops him and tells him to take a walk

The quarian starts with his whole speech

And shepard suckerpunches him giving me the best renegade momen in the whole triogy

— You wanna blew the ship I’m in because you’re a fucking moron fine, but if ever dare to put a finger against my crew… blah blah blah… Now get the hell out of my ship

Kaidan (and the rest tbh) are like: oooohhhmmmmmmggggg.

(Citar) the rest of the quarians in 20 mins in the meeting room.

Add a: wtf? You said we shouldn’t hit him

She: I said “you” couldn’t hit him… Never said anything about me.

“I thought I’d be able to keep my feelings outside of this whole thing”

“Yeah… well.. neither do I… Why do you think I slapped the bitch?”

//Have some fluff cute moment

“So… Now what?”

“Well, now I go look for something that isn’t my hoodie and meet with the rest of the quarians… see if we can do something to mend this whole grave the quarians have dug for themselves.”

“Okay, I’ll leave you to it.”

“I could use your help…”

He stares at her.

“I mean… I feel that if I go in there alone I’m gonna strangle somebody or something worse.”

“You just need to ask, Mio.”

“Mind to join me, Kaidan?”

“Whatever you command.” Grabs her hand and kisses it before looking at her eyes. “I should go change into my formal uniform then…”

Shepard goes into an inner monologue of cursing the day formal uniform was invented while she changes into it.

Meeting with quarians (except for the one Shep suckerpunches lol)

And she’s like: allow me to correct my previous thoughts after seeing Kaidan.

The quarian start screaming at each other

My shep: too distracted by the fact that Kai is wearing formal uniform -> Fantasy Table Sex

Comes back to reality

Stops the discussion

And an: okay let's get ready for the next mission (the one with legion were they enter in the mainframe)

I finally played a renegade Shepard that killed Wrex and it was actually hard to do it.

It was hard because he actually doesn't need a lot of convincing - well, relatively speaking.

At the end, what it boils down to for him is that he's tired of being a tool. He's a idealist. He wants to fight for something. He wants to do and be more in a galaxy that sees his life, as a krogan's, as inherently lesser. A tool, or a slave. Just something to use.

All you have to do is show that you see him, and his people, as more than a tool.

And tbh, a Shepard that tells him to fall in line and refuses to indulge him shows that, at the end of the day, everyone, not just the krogans, are expendable. And if you play your Renegade Shepard that way, I cannot fathom that this kind of Shepard is also a Shepard that has friends and romantic partners. There is no reciprocity of respect. This kind of Renegade Shepard sees their subordinates as, well, pure subordinates - almost to the point of cannon fodder.

The only companion who even thinks like this is Javik - the Prothean descended from an imperialist race who has also been so traumatized and forged by Reaper atrocity that his character development culminates with a goddamn handshake at the end of ME3.

Maybe I'm just overthinking things but goddamn do I hate Renegade Shepard.

I am a fan since: 2016? I think that's when I started playing the games

Favourite game of the series?: Man. Idk...maybe 3??? I've played 1 the most though vs. 3 which I've only played like...1.25 times

MShep or FShep?: FShep

Earthborn, Colonist or Spacer?: Spacer is my personal fave but I've played all three and honestly like them all

Biotics or Tech: Tech though throwing ppl is fun

Paragon or Renegade: Paragon

Favourite Class: Engineer BUT with the sniper talent from Infiltrator, (played it on my 2nd playthrough)

Favourite Companion: Wrex, though very hard to pick for this one. I also have a bias for Ash b/c I've used her a lot

Least favourite Companion: I like them all ... i'll cheat and say Brooks. She's cool too LOL

My squad selection: I switch my primary team every run so I usually don't have the same matchups. For each of my sheps so far, these were my mains though i didn't always stick to them : Andy - Liara+Ash / Thane+Kasumi / Liara+Ash Alanis - Garrus+Wrex (or Liara) / Jacob+Garrus (or Thane) / Garrus+Liara (so far, haven't played much of 3 with him) Cavendish - Wrex+Kaidan / Thane+anyone / didn't play 3 yet Isabel - Ash+Tali / haven''t played 2 or 3

Favourite In-game romance: Really hard to pick, probably Ashley's though it's a bit lacking in 3 in some parts. Otherwise Traynor or Liara (especially in 2). The others I just need to actually play haha

Other pairings I like: I like most if not all of the "canon" leaning pairings, also like James/Steve, Liara/Garrus, Ash/Liara, tbh I'm open to a lot

Favourite NPC: Nyreen Kandros. I also love Nihlus a lot even though he lasts like 30 mins

Favourite Antagonist: I don't have strong feelings about a lot of them but probably the Illusive Man bc of the whole "betrayal" angle plus how involved he is in 2/3. I used to not like Udina either but now I have some respect for him

Favourite Mission: i like the find the IFF mission in 2. I like a lot of 3's mission's too but it's been so long since I've played I'm forgetting lol

Favourite Loyalty Mission: Kasumi's probably, or Thane's for the chase - or Grunt's! Love that Thresher Maw fight

Favourite DLC: Citadel + Lair of the Shadow Broker but I like leviathan a lot as well

Control, Synthesis or Destroy: Destroy

Favourite Weapon: Black widow (sniper main)

Favourite Place: Tuchanka

A quote I like: Not very deep LOL but Shepard's line to Ash in the ME1 romance scene along the lines of "sometime's I don't want to lead you, sometimes I just want to stand beside you"

Abt the dragon ages:

I'd rec playing them in order for it to make most sense

It doesn't use the renegade/paragon system like me used; instead they played around with some different... Stuff. Origins simply gave you multiple dialogue choices in npc convos, 2 introduced dialogue tags that denoted your character's emotional intent: aggressive/direct, humorous/sarcastic, diplomatic/helpful (or smth like that. It wasn't always employed well tbh); and inquisition added even more on to that approach, so much so that they introduced perks your character could pick up to unlock additional conversational value (like if you had like. An underworld perk, you could inquire abt criminal activity or something)

There's no sexism in thedas (world where dragon age is set) except there is! Origins is a 2009 game and it shows

Idk how it is with mass effect but quite a lot of the worldbuilding and lore is found in codex entries

Where me had commander shepard, dragon age played around with the game protag: in origins your choice in race and class open up different 'origins' for your character (there's a total of 6 of those. Well 7 if we count the expansion one but i don't); with dragon age 2 they tried the mass effect approach: the titular character is hawke, they're a human, you just choose their gender and class and the pain train starts; in inquisition they went back to the origins concept and you could choose race, gender, class and voice.

The combat is different from me and it might take some getting used to as it relies on pausing combat to redirect characters and such

Bigger party! You can take 3 companions with you. You can take 4 in origins and 2 by including the dog if you mod it right

There's a romance system like in mass effect. I do hate 2 for introducing the rivalmance system. The wiki is your friend 😔

WHERE'S THAT SECOND MOON BIOWARE. WHERE'D IT RUN OFF TO.

beware the fade portion in origins. Maybe the deep roads too. Also beware the fucking hinterlands in inquisition

Speaking of maps/zones: dragon age 2 had rushed development and so a lot of the zones were just. A handful of maps that they re-used, positioned differently, with different assets and stuff like that. It WILL feel unsatisfying, but what can ya do 😔

Dragon age WANTS to play at grey morality... But it doesn't do so successfully.

You will like some characters. You might even love some. You might fall in love with this world and its stories like i did. I also want to smash this series like a pinata. It WILL make you angry, so be prepared for that (though i suppose the mass effect ending already prepped you for that?)

Make lots of saves and consult the wiki liberally!

anon i'm gonna be real with you, u had me at 'you can include the dog in your party'. 5 stars 10/10 game of all time if true.

i'm glad to hear it's similar but also different from mass effect, worldbuilding and lore being found in the codex is definitely a mass effect thing too (and i loved reading every entry). anything that fleshes out the world i'm playing in is a huge plus in my book.

honestly, after years of playing wow, skyrim and the fallout series i feel like i'm (hopefully) prepared for the epic highs and lows of dragon age. when exactly i’ll get around to it is anyone’s guess but i will definitely keep ur advice in mind.

Yo I fucking LOVE Miranda okay---she kind of fulfills the Cassandra role in ME2; there when you wake up, very competent but mistrusted by some of your teammates, skeptical of you but follows orders and doesn’t question your leadership, able to be won over and be a very warm and close friend. Idk man call me a sucker for the Bioware ice queen archetype lol but I loved Miranda pretty much immediately. And of course think she’d make a great f/f romance option but we suffer in this world.

Full disclosure I’ve never once made the Paragon/Renegade check by the time Jack and Miranda face off, and I’ve always sided with Miranda lol. Last playthrough I actually committed to going full Renegade so I was able to win Jack back over, but idk Jack the way she is in ME2 just kinda drives me crazy and I don’t really mind foregoing talking to her for awhile. So it’d be hard for me to ship her with Miranda just bc I’m kinda meh about her. I definitely feel a lot of sympathy for her situation/don’t hate her or wish her ill at all, I just don’t like a lot of her dialogue. I do like her a lot more in ME3 but I was an idiot last playthrough and didn’t do Grissom Academy in time so :(((

Nah, I don't have any actual OBJECTION to it. Like, I'm not saying people SHOULDN'T do it and tbh I should have included it in my post, because it's not the same as Ruthless in the "okay but nobody actually does this right?" category.

I know people who regularly play Spacer tend to be very genuinely fond of Hannah Shepard! I can also totally understand the things Spacer!Shep people like about it--the sense of (ironically) grounding, the ties to the Alliance, the sense of having something to live up to, the personal history it gives her.

I think that background also gets a lot of its content DURING the game as opposed to giving CONTEXT and a lens through which to view the game. Your unexpected death and resurrection? That hits badly enough when you don't have to figure out how to call your mom about it. Letting the Fleet cover your ass is a lot harder when one of those ships is captained by your mother. Hackett very clearly pulling Hannah out of her usual command and putting her with the Crucible because she's your mother and this is a really obvious, like, Saving Private Ryan situation where your mental health is fucked enough without having to learn your mom died in a skirmish is a lot!

I can totally understand why people like it.

It's just so emphatically not for me that it doesn't factor at all into my builds.

At last, I have finished Mass Effect 1!

I have heard some mutuals say they wish they could play it again for the first time, and you kind of can--through me! I’ve been posting little “episodes” of live-tweet-stream-of-consciousness as I play, and now I’ve compiled them into one post to make my life easier.
