hi. xiv analysis. i'm putting some stuff under the cut because that's all things relating to spoilers for the later half of the video jic.

firstly, xiv is a tiefling, but the exact tiefling subrace isn't specified in the video. i'd assume they're a Mephistopheles tiefling, given their appearance in game and the fact that meph tieflings are proficient in arcane magic. they're also known for being in more colder climates. i'll bring this up later.

they're a wild magic sorcerer, which is, in my opinion, super important to know to understand about their character. there's a multitude of ways I can describe it, but I think dnd 5e does a good job as it corresponds with Xiv's story. (link)

now. the spoilery content ^_^. also because this post is going to be like so long every kid with autism. [also very big warning for in-depth discussion of child abuse, particularly from a father, and the affects that has on said child. if you don't wanna read that part you don't have to]

xiv's father, even with the 13 other arcane batteries, is a very powerful man. he's a meph tiefling, giving him proficiency with arcane magic, and is probably a sorcerer like xiv. so, given that... the most logical explanation of xiv gaining the wild aspect of their magic is through enduring exposure to raw magic. Sure, it could potentially be "marked by a demon" given the fact they're a tiefling, but... Xiv's father isn't the best person.

bringing back the meph tieflings living in cold climates thing!! xiv mentioned they lived in a tower of sorts, far enough away where their father could keep them secluded. judging by the usage of negative space and scene layouts in their background animatic, we can retain the information that besides their father, they basically knew very little about the outside world growing up.

^^ tldr abt that. the animatic noticably gets more detailed as xiv both gets older and starts to doubt their father, and has its most detail when they have the wild magic explosion, and when they're escaping only to be put on the mindflayer ship ^_^.

anyway. with all of this to say, xiv's father is not a good man at all. he's done this 13 other times before getting to xiv, and didn't even give them an actual name. just the roman designation of it. he gave xiv a false, hopeful promise about how if they "honed their power, they could leave the tower", but fully intended to keep them there. it is slightly implied that their father got more abusive, more impatient and violent towards Xiv the more they messed up the more their magic lashed out even though it was wild by nature.

this is not good fatherly behavior!! telling them something that would never come true, especially basing it on their skill, they must have the worst damned imposter syndrome known to man!! second guessing themselves, thinking they're never good enough or having to check with the man who made that rule to see if anything they do is good... that isn't healthy!! that isn't a good thing to teach to your child!!

now back to xiv. that one "sex book" throwaway thing is brief but it says. so much about how xiv's father raised them?? i do not care if im looking too much into it but it literally implies that xiv just. doesn't know a lot about things beyond what their father's told them or what were in the books he probably gave them as a kid. combine that with the fact that they immeadily "push out" the mournful thoughts about rai's death to deal with "more important matters"... oh my god... they call me mx head of the xiv emotional support group... the ceo if you will...

and now... another important stepping stone to understanding xiv... rai's death.

first off xiv shapeshifting in the middle of the fight and going "no, not now, goddamnit-" its said in such a tone thats just so... not only is it because it's during such an important moment while they're fighting someone they consider a friend. it's almost as if they've been conditioned to believe that aspect of them isn't good. even though its what helps distract Rai so Tal can attack him. it's like they view it as something that needs to stop instead of something they can't control. which is. probably what their father saw it as! something that xiv needed to stop doing instead of honing to their abilities!

secondly... xiv is a sorcerer. you might be asking "eden!! weren't we just over this?" yeah but. rai... is also a sorcerer. he has the power to harness the storm. the first thing xiv says to rai during the fight is "you see, this is exactly why sorcerers shouldn't learn how to read! you always acted like you're so much better than me; we never should have trusted you!"

and that line in general. it's so. it's the last thing xiv says before rai dies. how did rai act like he was better than xiv? did they tell him this beforehand? is it something they kept locked up, never expressing until this moment? was it on purpose, or was it accidental? was it xiv, seeing rai do things they never learned how to do, and feeling jealous, angry, that he had a chance and they didn't? that rai got the joy of not knowing his parents, while xiv knew their father all too well?

and the sorcerer part... it's not only a dig at rai but themselves. they should've never learned how to read. they shouldn'tve been forced to spend ages in that library, learning spells and incantations instead of just trying to be a little kid. its so subtle yet it speaks so much about how xiv views themselves.

okay. that is basically it for canon stuff. this next part is headcanons/theories that i think are important for the discussion but aren't canon but. i still wanna yap <3

I think the tower/castle xiv grew up in is like, in a snowy mountain close to baldur's gate. it's quite the hike to get there and back but you can kind of see it through certain higher areas of the city. the tower is either positioned behind or to the side of the mountain. the side would be so evil because xiv seeing only a glimpse of the city...

i have this theory that xiv's father was a general or colonel for a war that tal was involved in, with tal's mother being a general as well. thus, i think xiv's only contact with people is either the other generals of this war, or their potential children that were brought over during the occasional meeting or dinner party. very vauge but regardless. smirks.

finally i think xiv was allowed out only on very slim occasions, usually when they begged their father hands and knees or when they did good on training. they were allowed to go with their father into the town of baldur's gate, but if they strayed from him they would be punished. severely. xiv usually went to bed that night hungry, in pain, but happy^_^

a headcanon you weren't sure about at first but have come to like!

that janus is loveless. i will say my hesitance didn't last very long and wasn't really hesitance, it was more "oh loveless janus is a hc? i can see how people can dislike it, but i love it." (so this option doesn't really count but i quite literally cant think of anything else)

there is a headcanon that janus is loveless/cannot feel love/doesn't love because he is a snake and snakes don't feel love. and as a loveless aromantic I absolutely love this headcanon.

i know people don't like this headcanon because people tend to view love as an inherently positive force and if you don't love or refuse to love that it's negative and offensive. & because people will try to use the lack of love to demonise janus, an already very demonise side. which... the demonising janus one is a valid reason to dislike it, the other reasons aren't.

i only ever consider patton to be loveless and i never see loveless hcs in fandom so knowing there's already a hc for janus being loveless makes me so so so so happy. i think there's something so sweet about janus not feeling love or choosing not to love or being critical about how society views love, but still being compassionate & caring towards the other sides & c!thomas*. that whether or not he loves them that doesn't control how he treats them. that his care isn't controlled by one singular feeling, but a multitude of feelings or opinions; he cares for the sides & thomas, because he knows they need it. & that idea means the world to me.

*obviously, loveless people can care & be compassionate. im loveless & im so compassionate to the people around me. but i mean more that, choosing janus 2 be loveless when he is literally self preservation & cares so much about the other sides & their health is soooo smart & beautiful. i know it probably originated to demonise him (or write aus where he "thinks he loveless but finds out he CAN feel love" eugh), but i like that you can switch it on its head & go "he doesn't feel love but that doesn't mattwe & wont ever matter. he feels so much compassion for the others" & choose not to demonise him.

i probably explained that all strange & worded it so bad i just woke up. BUT LIKE. YOU CAN CHOOSE TO DEMONISE HIM FOR BEING LOVELESS, BUT YOU CAN ALSO RECOGNISE THAT IF HE IS LOVELESS THAT LOVE DOESNT PUSH HIS CARING ACTIONS. HE JUST CARES.

also janus 100% would be loveless in the sense that he's criticising how society views love as the most "important thing" or as an inherently positive thing , as if people don't do horrible things bcuz of their love.

a tiny detail in canon that you want more people to appreciate

PERHAPS A REALLY SMALL DETAIL, but the way remus pauses & actually thinks about what is being said to him when logan is talking to him at the end of working through intrusive thoughts

maybe im crazy & insane & making things up bcuz i want them to be friends so bad BUT thruout the entire ending scene w/ logan & remus, remus is shown turning his back and reading a book and taking a cockroach out of his ear and eating it. very actively ignoring him.

BUT . IN THIS SCENE:

logan tells remus how he can see how remus can be helpful (albeit. thru gritted teeth.) & then asks him, "but perhaps, you can also see the merit in what I'm trying to do?"

& remus pauses.

he hesitates.

you can see him sit there and actually think about what logan is saying. & ofc he immediately goes back to ignoring him but it makes me crazed that logan tells remus that he can see why remus is doing what he is doing & that it can be helpful & then asks remus, straight forwardly, to try & see what logan is trying to do & remus stops in his little schemes and thinks about that. he has a little moment of hesitation.

though it could also be remus going "hmmm should i eat the tongue lollipop first or should i do the cockroach?" /j

FINALLY. YES YES YES- An opportunity to be unhinged about Wyrm. Give me a sec, all these thoughts are scrampled and I need to make them sensical.

First, I have to say that a good portion of this is heavily based on Hoops, String and Other Placebos, so no, the concept is not entirely mine at all. Also, this is insanely off-character and canon. It's also made with a female reader in mind.

So, quite like the fic, reader gets somehow thrown into this unknown world full of sentient bugs and whatnot, yadda yadda- A very painful adaptation process follows wherein you have to learn to live there, and blend in. I have in my head that you spent a good portion of your first months or so here known as a "beast" from the depths of Deepnest. You're much bigger than basically every bug in this entire place, not to mention a lot more dense and therefore stronger, so not much constitutes as a threat to you. To survive, you probably had to eat bugs at some point. Because, let's face it, these poor people never saw a human before, they're either scared shitless or attempt to kill you anyway. You don't feel too bad about it, telling yourself you act in self-defense.

You eventually start gathering the material possessions of perished bugs, including one who had a mask big enough that it could fit on your face. You've also befriended a small group of weaverlings by tentatively feeding them. I have a design for the way the reader "looks" in this scenario.

Let me explain a few things about you.

To the few bugs that have bothered to know your person, you are addressed as Venne, or Woevenne. You coined the name when you were pressured to introduce yourself, remembering your weaverlings and the reputation you had acquired along time as a strange "bug" with many woes. At the time, it sounded ridiculous to you, but everyone you got to know seemed to accept it instantly, some even going as far as to compliment it. The mask you wear is one you picked up from a long-perished husk, painting a couple of patterns on it both out of creative impulse and to distinguish yourself from the previous bug who wore it, in case anyone could recognize the mask. The cloaks you wear share tints of red, purple and pink, you've mastered how to arrange them in a way that leaves no inch of skin exposed. Even when your hands must be used, your weaverlings managed to craft very delicate silk gloves that hide the coloration of your skin- Though nothing can mask the malleable nature of your digits/hands;

You avoid speaking for a multitude of reasons. You've learned from experience that your voice carries itself in a much more imposing way than any other bug's. They say you're loud, that the vibrations of your vocalizations resonate within rooms, shake the people near you. You never thought being "too clear" was a real issue, but it seems that is the case. This tends to intimidate most bugs, with some either branding you a beast or questioning if you are of higher status. Not only that, human voices apparently have a wider range of pitch than a good portion of bug vocal chords, the ranges your voice can reach beffudle some bugs. Noises such as whistling, clicking your tongue and popping your lips rise unwanted attention as well. You have taken to remaining quiet for the most part to not raise suspicion, though unfortunately, this silence makes others fear you more when paired with different uncanny features of yours;

As I mentioned before, you hold a level of strength that is concerning to most bugs in Hallownest. Even if certain breeds are bigger and wider than you, they are nowhere near as compact and dense as a human. You could lift a watcher knight if you tried, you could rend their flesh from its shell. You can and have cracked the masks of many, deformed chitin beyond repair even. It is easy to kill bugs, have you ever a need for such. It's not much of a problem, since you avoid touch as much as possible. Direct contact with you will instantly let others know you are "weirdly soft" and inordinately warm. Bugs will still gawk when you casually move something that would otherwise require a herculean level of strength for them. Sometimes you have to pretend to be burdened, not that you're very good at it;

Most bug magic does nothing to you. This is purely because their brand of magic requires a connection to function properly. A projectile blade cannot pierce you because you have no "soul" which is compatible with the attack, therefore it simply phases through your person as if you are nonexistent. Healing magic also does little to nothing for you, so that's a downside. Regal seals meant to block pathways will have no effect for you either, you can venture into places that are usually off-limits for all and can even touch or harm objects supposedly protected by high-level seals. This makes you a bit of a hazard, and it is one of the blaring clues to others that you may not be a bug at all. Are you overpowered? Yes. Do I care? No, it's funny, let me be cringe;

You tower over most bugs. Including the Pale King. You're basically almost as big as Root herself.

Changes I made to the Pale King

My ""interpretation"" of PK is not canon compliant physically speaking thanks to the height I have given him. Everything else about his structure can be excused and safely incorporated given he wears robes that eclipse basically his entire form. What I can try to do, is use degeneracy to explain this sudden development (because, let's face it, at the end of the day this is largely made for porn purposes). Like sure, in the beginning Wyrm is rather small and rounded, maybe even quite worm-like, but he honestly dislikes his incarnation in spite of what his wife and consorts may have to say regarding it. Selfish as he is, he finds a way to induce changes in his form, via the bodies of others. Hence why he initially starts eating others. It started as just criminals going missing, but as his form shifts to something more regal and desirable, his appetite opens up and he starts taking people that just get on his nerves, then vessels, then just outright random bugs. Hence why he suddenly starts gaining a lot more height and refined structure in his form. He grows stronger and elegant the more he consumes. When asked about it, Wyrm excuses it all on a molting process that's been a long time coming;

Coming as a surprise to probably no one, I made Wyrm into a bit of an arrogant cock, a very fake king who seems calm, collected and benevolent to his subjects but is actually a very rotten, angry man deep down. You get to see this basically in your first moments alone with him.

How you get to meet him

I'll admit, since I never took this too seriously, there's a gap in logic I haven't quite worked out here yet, which is how exactly you get in contact with the king.

My current vein of thought is that someone discovers you're not a bug in public and gets a scene started, guards are called to capture you. Afraid of certain death, you retaliate, eventually accidentally killing someone in your attempts to break free, before you're swiftly hit unconscious by someone who finally manages to fetch enough blunt force to knock you out. The reason you're directly lead to the king is because you're deemed too dangerous to stay with just trained guards, seeing as you easily ripped one to shreds, and the rest only managed to get you because you froze in shock at your own actions. The King is probably strong enough to handle you, they think, plus he'll know what to do with the likes of you.

The thing is, you're delivered to Wyrm's office during a phase where he's extremely stressed out for a variety of reasons. The infection's spreading, his subjects are starting to question him, and his marriage with the queen is hanging by a very thin thread due to both their actions in an effort to stop the infection. Wyrm doesn't want to have to deal with this supposed ""beast"" that honestly just looks like a large, quiet bug to him. You're even civil, whatever is the point about making such a fuss, can't his people see he has bigger fish to fry?! Of course they can't, because they're like needy, dependent, intolerable children who can't do anything for themselves! Nonetheless, he thinks about simply executing you, but he's sure you'll be hard to kill, and Monomon would likely strangle him if he didn't let her have a chance to study you up close. But Wyrm doesn't have the time to make preparations to send you over either, there's just no time in his life to deal with you.

What ends up happening is that he forces you to stay in his office, whether he's working or not. He makes servants brings food by, he lets you bathe yourself (though with him there, it's sort of invasive, even if you're offered a mockery of privacy via curtains), it's awful but it's not the worst, you're just very confused as to why you're essentially held hostage in a cage inside the king's office. The more time passes, the more stressed and depressed he gets, spending more time in the office with you. He's frustrated, you get to see Wyrm throw massive fits, destroy his own property, going as far as to stay inside those very same walls essentially the entire day- Not working, purely as a means to escape his responsibilities and especially avoid his wife.

It's odd for you to see this, pitiful even. You never though you'd pity a God-King.

Eventually, perhaps in his loneliness and mania, the king starts talking to you. You don't really converse back, soured that he kind of treats you like a mindless brute, but you let him rant and rave about what drives him up the walls, about how his kingdom is nothing but a huge disappointment and he was expecting so much more and everything's out of control and he hates his fucking wife- It's honestly so amusing. You find yourself listening avidly to these little spiels, nodding along every now and then to let him know he's not talking to thin air. More and more, the Pale King begins finding it cathartic to vent his feelings to the supposed beast in his office. The "beast" that hasn't tried to harm him once, that behaves like any other person, that listens and agrees with him- Really, you're better than most of his subjects at this point. He's glad they brought you here.

Wyrm gets so comfortable that he starts talking to you about things he shouldn't. About how he sometimes eats his own peasants and servants. He might be a bug now, but he was once a formidable, massive god entity, and his instincts still flare up from time to time, so he indulges a couple of forbidden meals here and there. You won't judge him, will you Venne? You've eaten bugs before too. He can tell. He talks about how much Root gets on his nerves nowadays, how he wishes he could simply separate from her but that would further ruin the kingdom's very tenuous calm and disorient their plans for dealing with the Radiance... You won't say a peep about this to anyone, of course, you're always so quiet. Even if you did, Wyrm could easily convince most of the idiots he rules over that you're simply a lying, poisonous creature trying to slander him.

Overtime, the Pale King gets so sick, so tired, so stressed and angry with everything happening outside his office, that he starts romanticizing you. You're the only positive constant in his life anymore. His silent listener, his source of peace. He can be himself around you, and you never seem to judge him, or at least you don't care to, but that's a freedom he doesn't have with anyone else. He likes how warm you are compared to the usual coldness that follows him everywhere. You hardly say a word but you're so alive... One day, he demands to see you uncloaked. You hesitate naturally, but this bug is already such a freak, would the sight of a bare human really scandalize him? At most, he'll be disgusted and that'll be the end of it. Au contraire...

Wyrm is stupefied when he first sees you. Everything about you reminds him of the Root, but even more alluring. Your body is softer, more inviting than hers ever could be. Your eyes may not be as big but they shine brighter with a fantastical color to them, you have these wonderfully plush-looking lips with very strong teeth behind them. Even the mane of hair on your head, it contrasts with the rest of you but flows beautifully (let's face it, you probably don't get the opportunity to take cut it much)... There's these appendages on your chest that fascinate him endlessly, a strange crease on your belly and your genitals certainly seem built different than a bug's. He thinks you're the most gorgeous thing he's ever seen. What a fool he was, thinking you to be some brute beast, when you're actually a goddess. He falls in love near instantaneously, seeing you is the final nail in the coffin for his sanity.

You're now the mad king's object of desire, and in his mind, the queen's replacement.

His lust is also immediate, and instead of keeping himself chaste, Wyrm will take any opportunity he can to touch you. He's not gentlemanly about it either, unlike anything you'd expect from someone of kingly status, this guy rubs his hands everywhere on you while he speaks, slurring about how pretty and full you are, how he'll stuff you full of his eggs one day, acting like a completely lovestruck pervert. You allow him to do this, because you've grown attached during your months in captivity, he's also been the one constant thing in your life. And maybe, just maybe, you also think he's elegant, in a way. It's been so long since anyone looked at you with love in their eyes, it's been so long since you were wanted, appreciated for who you are as opposed to the carefully woven facade you wear. You let yourself indulge, the two of you budding a sickly romance amidst a dire situation.

Excuses are continually made so the king can keep you around. Oh, he's studying you personally. He's testing if you can be affected by this type of magic or if you react to void- He needs to evaluate your strength- But the best one, aka, the thing that makes people not question your continued presence too hard, is when he says you must be kept around because you're immune to the infection... And the more time he spends "picking you apart" in his office (fucking you stupid more like), the faster alternative cures may be reached! Soon, you're accompanying him everywhere.

Some of the king's consorts spot rare instances in which Wyrm forgets to be stoic around you, moments where his carefully-contained hysteria surfaces and he coos something at you, holds your hand even. Murmurs spread, you start being referred to as a "concubine" of sorts, a plaything, a mistress even. While the queen herself never paid you much mind, you know it's only a matter of time before she catches wind of the palace's gossip, until she starts questioning why Wyrm is ever so distant and always so irritated when you're away, why he won't even kiss Root anymore.

You feel a bit like a homewrecker, but at the same time, you have nothing to lose ever since you were dropped into this world. Why not let her find out and watch the fallout of a royal marriage brought to ruin?

Hey! I’m an alter who was formed to be a protector (im not familiar with did terms, but I think “protector” is the right word). I fronted during traumatizing events and I front sometimes to handle triggering situations or to take over the body while another alter experiences ptsd/any other Bad Things

I haven’t fronted very often since we moved out of our abuser’s home (years ago) and I’ve never fronted for more than a few days. Usually when I front, our gatekeeper will kinda be there with me and talk to me (idk if that’s co-con). But right now it’s all quiet. I can’t hear anyone, I can’t talk to anyone. And I’ve been fronting for almost a month.

I’m older than the body (and most alters) and I know I’m supposed to be the one that has everything under control, but right now I’m stressed beyond belief and no one will talk to me. I’m the one who fixes stuff but I got thrust to the front with nothing to fix, and I just don’t know what’s going on.

hey, we’re so sorry to hear you’re going through something like this!

we know this probably isn’t too reassuring, but from what we understand it’s common for many systems to experience extended periods of silence from the rest of their system sometimes. this could be for a multitude of reasons, and unfortunately we worry that the best way through it is to try and wait it out!

maybe you could try poking around your headspace (if y’all have one), compiling collections of things that remind you of your system members, and occasionally reaching out internally, even if you feel like you’re alone, to see if you can get a response. we know it’s not much, but maybe one of these things could help you discover a headmate, feel like you have a bit more control over your situation, or at least help ease feelings of loneliness and isolation.

from one protector to another, i (kip) really understand how scary and difficult it can be realizing that you don’t have as much control or ability to fix situations in your system as you used to or once thought you had. i also know how exhausting it can be fronting for much longer than you had ever expected to! we want to reassure you that you’re not alone in your struggles - there are lots of systems out there who have been through very similar situations.

if you are out to anyone in your life about your system (a therapist, family member, friend, etc), it may be helpful for you to tell them about what’s going on and how you’ve been handling it. even if they don’t know much about system experience or how to help you, it may be beneficial just for you to speak about this to someone who knows and cares about you and your system. sometimes just vocalizing our struggles and sharing them with a friend can do so much to ease inner tension!

regardless, we truly are so sorry you’re having to go through this difficult situation alone. we hope that your headmates will resurface soon and you won’t be alone for much longer!! in the meantime, please do your best to take care of yourself and not beat yourself up for things that are outside of your control. we’re rooting for you, and we wish you the very best!

the record being essentially an album full of love songs about friendships

I first listened to the album at a listening party and the whole time i was very emotional just thinking about their friendship - when i left the listening party i texted one of my friends “it feels like a bunch of love letters that they wrote for each other”. ever since i haven’t been able to not view The Record with a different mindset. Hi. I hope this doesn't come across as if I'm making your abuse about me (some rando). But I'm studying to be a CPS worker and already have a lot of hesitation because of how many articles come out of people abusing their position to take advantage of vulnerable minors. It feels more confirmed now that, from my perspective, it seems to be mostly power-obsessed/controlling individuals who enter the role, given the likes of your mother. I don't know what my question is exactly. I'm sorry if this was unfair to put on you, that wasn't my intention. I guess I was mostly hoping if you or any of your followers had any commentary/insight on such a topic?

ur fine dw, im ok talking about it but can only rlly provide personal experience however it has been documented that cps has high rates of abuse and neglect from workers, u can find specific statistics online but in my personal experience a lot of the workforce for cps are older women, my mother would tell me they rarely fired anyone even when they did something egregious (hitting the kids during visting hours / interviewing / in building case work, having sexual relationships with the boys, faking visits / making fake documents of visits, and general abuse) so often they’d get “written” up but nothing would actually be done bc it (atleast in nj) cost more and required more labor to train new hires and get them in than to keep someone that’s been there for twenty years, i was personally brought with my mom often to her visits / her office and many of her coworkers were the same as her some not as bad but a lot of them thought a lot of the abuse happening was normal and played down things, in the black community whooping is seen as pretty normal in parents regardless of severity so there’d be times when i’d come with her to houses and the parents would literally beat the kids / teens in front of her and she’d just go “that’ll teach them respect” “you should’ve listened to your mother” and then rlly mom and the mom abusing the kids would bond over basically doing the same thing coming from the same background, obv a lot of black mothers don’t stay with black fathers for a multitude of reasons, so many of my moms coworkers who were also black women would quickly be on the side of the moms being reported for harming their kids On the basis of “we r all single parents so i get it” this isn’t unique to black ppl obv but the job definitely attracts people that want power over others, a lot of in building work is not supervised and bc a lot of the visits aren’t checked ur case worker essentially doesn’t have to actually do their job to keep their job, i think it’s similar to how many nurses are mean even tho it isn’t reflective of the entire profession many ppl seeking to harm kids or justify harming kids flock to those jobs for a good pay check with little repercussion for wrong doing, u can ask a more specific question if u want as i’ve watched my mom work and been with her at work and visits for most of my life, this is just a general statement

i understand that this sentiment can be valuable for people with restrictive eating disorders. you are allowed to eat and nourish your body and not feel guilty. but saying that "oh your knees wont hurt as much and your LDL/A1C will improve but thats it it's otherwise Very Unhealthy" is grossly negligent

ldl? you mean cholesterol? a1c? you mean blood sugar levels? you mean by eating in a way that nourishes your body but not in significant excess will help prevent heart disease and type 2 diabetes? which are lifelong medical conditions that can be expensive to live with in countries with no socialized health care?

how about instead of lying and saying that Losing Weight Is Bad we talk about eating varieties of nutrient-dense foods. we talk about adding in foods that are good for our bodies and slowly reducing the amount of foods that are genetically engineered to make you crave more and more and are sold by companies that do not give a shit about your health

like. eating 1500 calories a day is not a starvation diet for anyone under 5 foot 4. it is for taller people. because who would have thought people with larger frames need more energy to make their bodies work. because there is more of them to move around.

this shit makes me SO FUCKING ANGRY. i have seen a dietician, who has graduated me from seeing her. i do not have an eating disorder. but these fucking posts that are just LYING are actively triggering!!!

for the love of god there are communities of people out there who have lost a significant amount of weight, have kept it off, and are EXTREMELY supportive for people who want that for themselves! people who choose to stick around once theyre in "maintenance" (staying at a weight that is healthy for them) because they want to help people improve their lives! acting like NO ONE keeps the weight off is just wrong!!

some of us have fucked up hunger cues!! some of us have adapted overeating as an unhealthy coping mechanism!! as a form of self-harm!! and these things deserve to be faced with kindness and understanding, not "You Will Fail, You Will Fail, You Must Stay Fat"

being fat is morally neutral!! being thin is morally neutral!! you are not a bad person for wanting to gain weight! you are not a bad person for wanting to lose weight! you are not a bad person for wanting to stay the same weight! you are not a bad person for not even being concerned about your weight! but by fucking god you are allowed to feel happy and comfortable with your body in whatever shape it is, and if you know you would be happier in a different shape, you are allowed to work for that!!! fuck!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hi saul - do you mind if i ask you about what sort of stuff/signs in writing tells you when the author is using abuse cheaply? you made a post about it a few days ago, and as a writer and reader i thought id ask so i could watch out for that sort of thing. conversely, do you know any books that you consider to portray abuse well? of course feel free not to answer, thank you for your time anyway

It's a lot, let me tell ya.

thank you for asking, also please excuse my atrocious grammar.

Take these with a grain of salt, but all these are just what i noticed reading cheap books while i was traveling. these books are cheap for a reason, theyre bad, and most likely not representative of good literature. I tend to enjoy mostly mystery books as well as classics, so i dont go about choosing books that are good at depicting home lives of abuse victims consciously, and dont really have any recommendations on books that depict abuse respectfully. i reckon other people will though if you search well enough youll find books written by people who were abused and chose to share thier stories through non fiction or fiction, or find books written respectfully that tackle the concepts of abuse. but what im going to talk about right now is how apparently a lot of authors cant find any good ways to handle abuse as a topic without being immensely disrespectful to multitudes of people- just solely based on my observations from the many many terrible books ive read over the years, mostly shitty thriller novels that exist to shock people crassly.

the most common cheap mentions of abuse that i have commonly seen and read tend to be as such: evil 'crazy' villain was abused as a child which leads to why he's evil, abusers are all people who have personality disorders cause mental illness is 'crazy' and leads to evil people, abused children are 'damaged' and such will do bad things if they become 'crazy' enough, etc. It's always related to some sort of nonsensical pathologising of completely neutral conditions people have, and the demonising of already vulnerable groups of people by showing them as abusers, even though these people are most likely victims of abuse. This is the main sign that the abuse mentioned in a story is most likely being used as a scare mongering tactic against mentally ill people, for nothing but shock value. I find this to be one of the most common, cheap uses of abuse as a topic in (mainly horror and thriller) books.

The second most cheap mention of abuse is this very strange twisting of abusers as people who have he capacity to change, as some sort of optimism porn or something. In my experience and the experience of many others, its insulting that books make it seem like abusers are secretly good people who are just misguided and will change on their own 'once they realise'. Or that they can make up for their behaviour through apologies and actions, because 'actions speak louder than words'. The idea that everything can be forgiven through the power of change or some magical bullshit, incredibly disrespectful to victims of abuse. Abusers are repeat offenders, and rarely are they ever people who just have one form by which they abuse people. Physical abuse comes verbal, and emotional. but most people only focus on the physical and verbal, and think that if someone shows abusers the 'right way' they'll simply learn their wrong ways and change. thats not how it works, you would never abuse someone if you were secretcly a good person. theres a fundamental flaw in giving the benefit of the doubt to people who have done immeasurable damage to their victims, theres nothing to achieve when you dont have more empathy and compassion for the victims and their pain.

A lot of abusers were abused themselves as kids, and so choose to continue the cycle of abuse, but this cannot be used to create a form of 'oh they were so hurt and they dont know any better' type of image. because they do know better, but they dont think theyre being abusive, cause they think they have the right to behave the way they do. You can address what led people to be the way they are without absolving them of their behaviour in fiction. in the end theyre all characters but the least you can do to people who were abused by people like these characters in a similar fashion is to not write abusers like they are not responsible for their actions, jsut because they went through the same thing in the past. theres no valid reason to be an abuser, and there never will be.

the worst of all is obviously with those 50 shades type romance thriller novels that romanticise misogyny and abuse, we all know about this, some new romance novel or the other with 'spicy' scenes becomes popular every few weeks on tiktok, ahem hem for example The Wives by Tarryn Fisher. terrible book, its so fucking terrible, its downright evil.

for writing tips on accurately and thoughtfully depicting abuse, you have to actually read or listen multiple people who have shared their experience with abuse. Be intelligent with how you use resources available, and dont fall into the trap of following easy but damaging tropes to shock readers.

1. hrmm, abt when they officially got together n who confessed first.

that's a tricky one. i think the most plausible answer would be that they knew ever since they were kids. like, it just happened for them, yanno? :) they place so much trust on eo, so y wouldnt they share these wonderful feelings at the first chance they can get? whispered under their kitchen table, sharing a bag of chips and chilling, feeling like forever. or just stowed away in their bedroom, unanimously agreeing on their future. the just knew in that sense :) for sure they r not the types to keep secrets to eo

-and even if they did already know such feelings were wrong for example ૮꒰/ฅ//ฅ//꒱ა i believe they'd still confess it, if only so their brother could help them. they trust each other that much. judgment? between these two? :) come on, now-

in the case of confessions, i think it's a toss-up on who catches feelings first. somehow i think it's kudari who'd be the first to say something bc he lacks a filter moreso than ingo. plus, i dont think ingo would be the type to realize such feelings at a young age. like, he'll have the same attraction towards emmet but he'd just assume it's his usual urge to spoil his baby brother or something. so he would just.. not notice it as soon. idk how to explain it but yeah :3

it's a mixed opinion haha. i mean beside @akirasdigbick's nori, i don't think i like imagining them w children? dont get me wrong, i go nuts for dad!nbr, like srslyyy one of the hottest characters in an au ever :') but i usually like stuff that r as close to canon as possible unless i get sold on it.

n i especially don't like it when it's the 'x adopts y' format where y is a canon character in the game. the reason in particular for this one is that emmet gets left behind in these kinds of fun :P the dad!ingo agenda sells by the dozen w a multitude of characters from both pla and bw and suree i see it, but it doesnt rly interest me ever since again, no emmet XP wc is a shame bc if emmets anything like me, kids would follow him around constantly

ingo will always pull him aside and be verrry strict w him ofc n emmet would make a saucy joke or two if he wasnt as pale as a sheet, sounding like one too w the way he whistles between his breaths.

ofc ingo wouldn't stay mad for too long and inevitably just sigh and help emmet relax by filling a hot bath w some great salts and warmed chocolate moomoo milk and all the marshmallows. they have a tub big enough to fit both of them in, ingo would massage his back n chest and at first they'd just talk abt their day -complain snark n rant even- until ingo once again whispers for emmet to take care of himself, pleading between kisses on his shoulder blade to wc then emmet would finally just cry :'))))))

i do think that even at a young age, they will absolutely be like so normal abt it. ingo would totally be the best brother ever. liek emmet will totally chill around after his baths by a bit topless bc he'd suddenly be distracted w a game or something midway thru dressing up n ingo will just like not care, just tell his brother to stop being so slow to snap him out of it if he hasnt already. he doesnt go on unnecessarily fights w the kids who bully emmet abt it bc he and emmet knows its not worth shit. he was quick to fling emmet's binder to his face bc ingo told him to clean up his side of the room at the times when even emmets parents hugged him a bit stiffly when he had his binder on. ingo held his hands when he first started taking hormones bc even tho he knew emmet didnt rly fear needles -ingo feared sharp things more than him even- emmet was still scared, even though he'd been putting on a brave face for his parents. then they all had ice creams n still neither let gooooo :3333333333

i do not understand people that think kris's gender is "up for interpretation". pronouns dont necessarily equal gender so they may not be non-binary, but they/them pronouns also dont automatically mean ambiguity. the people who think that the reason they go by they/them is because its been intentionally left ambiguous or because they are meant to be projected onto confuse me.

have you PLAYED deltarune? do you know what the entire point of deltarune is? are you aware of kris's main character arc/plot point?

deltarune has a multitude of plot points and thematic devices that i dont understand fully, im not claiming to be a deltarune expert, but like. its GLARINGLY obvious that the player has no influence over the in-game events. the GAME NARRATOR tells you. OTHER CHARACTERS tell you. the MAIN CHARACTER actively fights you for control. the entire point of deltarune, right from the get go, is that the player. doesnt. matter. the characters are their own characters, with their own lives and thoughts and feelings, and while the player is the puppet master, kris is completely seperate from the player. idk whats so hard about that for transphobes to grasp?

theres other stuff, like toby actively correcting people on their pronouns, and tobys history of lgbt+ rep, and every other human character [even the one thats not technically a protag] going by they/them, but thats the main point that pisses me off. like if youre going to make an argument against them being lgbt+ rep then at least make an argument that is consistent with the purpose of the entire game.

everyone jumping to defend you and make you feel better about yourself either don't know about how you treat people you don't agree with or don't care enough to hold you accountable. look how you responded to a very non-threatening message asking you to treat people better on a website we're all trying to coexist on. being rude, insulting me, telling me to go fuck myself, when all i said was that your actions are harmful to others and you should work on being a better person? protesting too much

Oh, you're serious! Okay. I could address this seriously and in a multitude of ways. That said, I'll address it in four :

First: Don't mention the people I write with, or the people that commented on that post. You're not dealing with them, you're dealing with me. Your beef is with me, keep your focus on me. Diverting from your original goal will only weaken your position and weaken my perception of you as credible.

Second: I responded to your 'non-threatening' message the way I did because I thought it was a goof, and a gaff! When you show up in my house with vague, far-reaching statements about me 'making people feel unsafe' I can only assume you're goofing with me! You haven't even offered any sources of me actively hurting people, making them feel unsafe, or whatever else it was you said I did. I'm not gonna hold you, chief, I immediately erased the bulk of it from my memory after I hit 'Post Now'.

That said, I'll treat your anonymous, cowardly messages with more gravitas going forward because you're not goofing, not gaffing, and are clearly on the hunt for my attention here. I'll give you what you want in the form of my attention, but I can also promise you that I'm not going to magically have a change of heart and 'better' myself because some scared weakling on the internet thinks I need to be nicer to... you know, whomever the fuck I've upset by walking around with my shirt off and my caps lock on.

Third: If my actions were harmful to anyone, they can come tell me face. to. face. Come in my IMs, add me on discord, find my mom on facebook and ask for my phone number (she's given my phone number out to people before, I fucking can't believe her...). my thoughts on the claudia situation from ep5 (tw: SA)

it's wrong. for one, it should not have happened to her. multiple anne rice's characters suffer from some sort of SA and that's okay and her books are a place where that sort of stuff is portrayed. that's not inherently bad or wrong.

BUT. claudia wasnt supposed to live that. that's anne rice's dead daughter for christ sake, and if she did not put it in her story line. there is a reason, because she could have very well decided to and has for multiple others. but not claudia. and i dont think this simply comes from a "she represents her daughter" type of thing, but something about her character. her complexity comes from a multitude of things, and NOT being a victim of SA is a part of that. and they ruined that.

also, it's important to remember that some characters do suffer from those things and that's equally important and makes them more complex. it didnt make claudia more complexity, it just gave her a reason to come back. that's bullshit, if you wanna add that to her storyline, you better treat it with the consideration it deserves, especially since claudia is black in the series. having a black woman (girl actually, which is even worse) be subject to SA is traumatic and should not just serve a tool to "toughen her up", especially when SA is treated in a completely different way in the books.

usually it's depicted as a loss/retaking of control, and that gives the character a more complex understanding of things. whether it's being subjected to or doing the act, that tells you something about the character and their relationship with control (most of the time), whether it's a sex thing or a blood thing (which is extremely related in the books, not as much in the show).

anyways, i think that's it? i have many more thoughts, feel free to add to it because i think it's unfair and should be discussed (with all the respect and consideration it deserves). this is a heavy topic and should be treated as such.

(note: im a white woman and therefore cannot completely understand the whole thing from the perspective of a black woman but i tried to give as much nuance to the conversation as i believe it deserves that. feel free to correct me on anything, i know i did not fully explain the perspective change from a white claudia to a black claudia, but i feel like im not the right person for that. again, feel free to leave your thoughts, this is a safe space for discussions and deferring opinions)

So I was looking at soap's wiki page and it says that he visited his cousin in the SAS many times and also tried to join under aged a few times, right? Well it doesn't say why, tho. And any normal person would assume that he wanted to join so bad because of his cousin. But im not normal so I got to thinking.well even if he did join just because of that cousin, that doesn't explain why whe tried to join early. Multiple times. So obviously there is atleast another factor in this situation. And we've all established his thing for hating himself, just a bit, and he's definitely not a straight man. And well homosexual and military down exactly sound like a the most delicious martini. And I'm not exactly caught up on Scotland's ally status, nor have I found much info about his family. So what if this was his way of self punishment for being a gay man?

But, El, what if he didn't realize his sexuality until aftet he joined? Or his family was supportive? An excellent question. If it wasn't that maybe it was because he had no direction in life. Perhaps he felt lost. Academics maybe weren't his strong suit, or he burnt out at somepoint, so college (university?) Wasn't an option. Maybe his parents said either higher education or a job, right?(yes I'm heavily projecting onto this poor man, I'm sorry but you also can't stop me) In today's day and age it is becoming increasingly difficult to find a job without a college degree. And jobs like that can always be unstable or underpaid or overworked, understaffed, unnecessarily dangerous, and a multitude of other things. But the military? Well you know what you're signing up for, you really only have to do as your told and no more, and you can do alot of good. Plus he already has a cousin in there.

Or maybe its as simple as his family has/had money issued and the military gives good pay?

Also apparently I left a comment on the latest chapter of I.S.B.T.P.K.F.T.S and I don't remember lol. Also I promise the next part of my favorite moments is coming out. I've been very busy lately. Sorry for the long ask

I've had SO many thoughts about Soap joining the military ESPECIALLY the fact he tried to join at 16 but was refused. You are allowed to join the military at 16 with parental consent, so I've come to the conclusion that his parents wouldn't like the fact that he wanted to be in the military - this tracks considering many Scots who see them self separate from Brits aren't typically the biggest fans of joining UK collective things like the military (this is coming from my Irish bg so it could be different).

As to why he wanted to join, I think there are multiple reasons, but if his queerness is a reason I would think its less to do with punishing himself (though sometimes it may feel like a punishment being around Ghost when Soap wants him so badly) and more to do with him possibly avoiding telling his family. Scotland as a whole recently is quite up there in ally status but that 1) doesn't reflect how the 2000's/2010's were 2) doesn't mean everyone is an ally ofc. Anyway, the MacTavishes aren't homophobic in any regard but that doesn't mean Soap knows that or isn't scared (either bc he's never seen his family react to queer people irl or, if he has, he'll think he'll be an exception).

Other causes likely are due to his school career: he was a footballer, but I don't think he ever tried to go pro, and in ISBTPKFTS the backstory I've given him wouldn't allow him to (W.C status and home life). And you make a great point with burnout - if we're sticking to real rules of the army, he wouldn't be able to be medicated or have lesson plan adjustments for his ADHD if he's diagnosed (i think I read that somewhere) so he's either not diagnosed or he never had accommodations so burnout is very likely. Uni, of course, would seem like a horrible thing for him, even if he was like many ppl who go to uni for the experience or bc of the job market.

But the idea that his parents expecting him to get a job or go to uni is very real (dw I'm also projecting here) and the monotonous work/life balance sounded like hell. Knowing his cousin's life in the army definitely planted the seed, and I think (in the fic at least) he'd visit his cousin to get some free time away from home but it ends up convincing him of what he wanted to do with his life. Like you said, you know what you sign up for with the army. He probably didn't expect the RSD to follow him especially if he isn't diagnosed, or if he's not very clued up on that part of his ADHD,hence why he can't rationalise his own feelings when they start to overwhelm him

i was so ready for the pool scene but I got this episode instead :/ I don’t even know what to say. is kinn really this stupid?? falling for tawan’s lies again? tell me he’s not this stupid. I honestly don’t know what to think. I’ve seen some people theorize that he believes Porsche is innocent and he’ just acting like he’s falling for it but idk I would like to believe this theory but I feel like he genuinely doesn’t trust Porsche. which is so absurd?? he literally didn’t do anything? 1/8

why would eavesdropping on t prove he’s a mole? I seriously dont understand. god his facial expressions when k said to lock him up. the way he was confused at first and rightfully so like he just wanted to help?? and the second time he tried to reason with him because this is nonsense and how does k not see it?? by the third time he just completely gives up and it’s so heartbreaking. apo’s acting was so good in this scene I can’t even put into words the multitude of emotions he goes through. and at the end when he thought k was coming to get him and said ‘I knew you’d trust me’ GOD the angst in this show.I swear to god tankhun is the only one with the braincells in this show.he likes to act “crazy” but he’s far from it. everyone can see from a mile away that tawan is lying. I cannot believe that kinn can’t. when he said he’ll clear things up with p that gave me hope. he must be acting like he’s falling for tawan’s lies right? this is all part of his plan to catch him. there’s only a few episodes left it wouldn’t make sense if k still didn’t fully trust him. but in that shoot-out scene from the mv p says Im on your side so like? its still not clear? p still has to convince him? vikki I’m genuinely losing my mind over these gays. okay the things I loved: THE MILK!! metaphor of the damn century. out of all the things they could have chosen for this they chose milk.. I love that for them. and kimchay!! after the last ep I was ready for angst but we got a kiss. they are so cute idk what happens to them in the novel but I hope they get a happy ending in this. although I’m sure some shit is about to go down first. and vegas my boy. idk how you feel about him but personally I’m a weak hoe. I see a sexy villain and I simply have to simp for him. I’ve been dying to see some vegaspete and it’s finally happening!! I know about some stuff he does in the novel but I have no idea what they’ll do in the show and it’s just so exciting. will he genuinely like pete or just use him? I’m dying to find out. and he’s so good at playing Porsche. I mean it’s good to watch but p is not falling for it at all. after that pool scene part of me is convinced this is all just an act and he doesn’t give a fuck about p but another part of me is like what if he was just planning on using him against kinn but started to genuinely like him at some point?? I really don’t know. I mean he’s probably just using him but still I like to be a little delulu and imagine things. and the ending?? run away with me Porsche?? I was screaming!!! there’s no way p would go with him but the possibility of p tricking vegas and using him to get out of jail? chefs kiss. so yeah I think I’ve screamed about everything I wanted. I make theories in my head what could happen next episode but I’m always wrong lmao. and I just wanted to say I hope you’re doing better now and everything is well i'm genuinley so thankful that i can come here and talk about kp with you

the way we were baited with that pool scene 💀💀 and during the first week of pride month? kp cancelled for being homophobic against me personally actually. the way i was watching the timer tick down the whole episode like "oh boy haha 30 minutes left i wonder when the pool scene will happen. oh boy only 15 minutes now................haha only five more minutes guys..........." im not a clown im the whole circus

i genuinley don't think kinn trusts tawan in the slightest but im a kinn defender at heart. kinn knows that tawan never loved him, he made that clear at the end of episode 8 during that conversation with porsche when he crumpled up his picture. kinn is very much aware of the fact that he was in love with tawan, but tawan used him and played him and was never in love with him. i think it's easy for us to sit here and say that porsche hasn't done anything but we have the benefit of hindsight we know what he was doing when he bugged tawan's room, kinn doesn't. from his perspective it just looks like porsche was spying on him and following him around without permission, and that scene with vegas by the pool probably didn't help either since he thinks the information is being passed along to the minor family of course everything starts to look kinda sus.

there are a few emotions kinn doesn't deal well with, two of the big ones being jealousy and betrayal. it's less about him not trusting porsche (because he does trust him imo, just in his own way. why else would he continiously let himself be alone around porsche, let himself be vulnerable around porsche, if he didn't trust him ykwim?) and more about him not trusting himself and his emotions. he was burned so visciously by tawan and he has genuine trauma from it that i think a lot of people don't want to see, it's not as easy as telling kinn to just get over it now he has porsche, he has a lot of trust issues and when you couple that with his identity crisis his actions start to make a lot more sense.

the "i knew you'd trust me" genuinley broke a little piece of my soul because kinn does trust him!! and porsche has enough faith in him to know that he does!! again it all comes right back to the fact that these two have problems with communicating their emotions - they have sex and they think it solves the majority of their problems but it doesn't.

i swear to god i've rewatched the trailer at least 12 times this week to try and piece all the scenes we haven't got yet together. where does the scene with his uncle and the "you shagged him for this" come in, why are they laughing together at the back of yok's bar, when is kim going to beat the shit out of someone i need answers five episodes is not enough time for all the answers that i need!!!!! and we still have to get that scene of porchay crying when he's looking at his phone kimchay is gonna go up in flames soon i know it is and im not prepared to see him cry

listen bible is SO pretty but i want to spin vegas' jaw right now like im gonna feel bad about bruising all his pretty but im still gonna DO it get a job stay away from porsche. i heard that they toned a lot of the vegaspete arc down from the novel which im obviously happy about because oh boy...... vegaspete novel arc is just not it babes novel vegas im sharpening my knives as we speak
