An old oil pastel sketch I did some years ago of a view from the Jacobite steam train on the West Highland Line. Going on that train journey was a super special treat for me. I probably have this sketch somewhere in my studio, but no idea where.

7th August 1894 saw the first train arrives in Fort William on the newly opened West Highland Line.

The West Highland Line runs from Glasgow to Fort William, the largest town in the West Highlands of Scotland, and onwards to Mallaig, a tiny fishing port and terminal for the ferry to Armadale on the Isle of Skye. Most of the line is a twisting single track railway through fabulous Highland scenery, often miles from the nearest road. There's also a branch to Oban, the ferry terminal for various Scottish islands, dubbed The Gateway to the Isles.

Tiring of the 50-mile trek to the railhead of Kingussie on the Highland Line to Inverness, the citizens of Fort William decided they must have their own railway, and construction started in 1889. It was not an easy railway to build, across remote and difficult regions of the Scottish highlands. Lack of money meant the line featured many steep gradients and sharp curves as more direct alignments would have meant expensive viaducts & cuttings. The first trains linked Glasgow with Fort William in August 1894.

The next step was an extension to the sea, to serve the fishing industry on the west coast. A plan to serve Roshven was blocked by a local landowner, so Mallaig was chosen instead. However, the extension became something of a political football and the Mallaig Extension wasn't opened until 1901.

The separate branch line to Oban wasn't originally part of the Glasgow-Fort William-Mallaig line at all, it had its own route from Glasgow via Callander, opened in 1880 and operated by the rival Caledonian Railway. This passed under the Glasgow-Fort William line just north of Crianlarich, and you can just make out the old track-bed today from the train to Fort William. The line from Glasgow via Callander was closed during the Beeching cuts in the 1960s, and trains between Glasgow and Oban diverted to share the line to Crianlarich with the Fort William trains.

Whilst all journeys on the West Highland Line are enjoyable, the Jewel in the Crown must surely be the Jacobite steam-hauled train from Ft William to Mallaig, it is often sold out and popularity in the journey was helped by the success of the Harry Potter books and films.

Lairds and Ladies!

Heute fahren wir genau die gleiche Strecke von gestern noch einmal - nur mit dem Auto und lauern unterwegs dem Jacobite Train mehrfach auf. 

Schließlich wollen wir für unseren Film gescheite Außenaufnahmen von dem Zug haben und die bekommt man nicht, wenn man selbst drin sitzt.

Und da wir nicht, so wie das Filmteam gestern, über einen Helicoptet verfügen, müssen wir eben selber fahren. Dabei passiert wir noch einmal einige der schönsten Sehenswürdigkeiten der Highlands.

Die A830, wie die Road to the Isles eigentlich heißt, gehört angeblich zu einer der schönsten Straßen der schottischen Highlands. 

Beginnend bei Fort William schlängelt sich die Road to the Isles zunächst am Loch Eil entlang. Kaum hat sie es aber hinter sich gelassen, erheben sich die Berge der Highlands an ihrer Seite.

Die Dichte an Drehorten der Geschichte des Zauberlehrlings an dieser Straße, ist unschlagbar: der Jacobite Steam Train etwa ist auch als „Harry Potter Zug“ bekannt. 

Das Glenfinnan Viaduct ist als runde Brücke mehrfach zu sehen: Mal sauste Harry Potter mit seinen Freunden zur Zauberschule von Hogwart im Dampfzug, dann wieder ein einem fliegendem Auto, das irgendwie einem Trabbi ähnlich sieht.

Loch Shiel verkörpert den Hogwarts See und in Loch Eilt findet sich die Insel mit Dumbledores Grab.

Bei Glenfinnan sammelten sich einst die Clans unter dem Banner von Bonnie Prince Charlie, ehe sie den letzten Jakobitenaufstand starteten.

Es gibt einen anderen Kultfilm aus den 1980ern, der hier gedreht wurde. Denn auf dem Wasser von Loch Shiel brachte einst Sean Connery dem „Highlander“ das Balancieren bei. Und weiter im Westen, an den Morar Silver Beaches, versetzen sich die beiden in einen Hirsch und rannten den Sandstrand entlang.

Und genau dieser Strand war einst im Film „Local Hero“ in den 80ern als Strand von Ferness zu sehen.

Die Sehenswürdigkeiten an der Straße reisen wir hier allerdings nicht streng von von Ost nach West ab, da der Jacobite Steam Train zu bestimmten Zeiten an bestimmten Punkten auf der Strecke zu sehen ist, springen wir hin und her.

Hier lohnt es sich zum Beispiel zu Beginn am Glenfinnan Monument zu halten, dort einige Zeit zu verbringen und dann weiter zu fahren. Auf dem Rückweg lassen sich dann in Ruhe die natürlichen und kostenfreien Schönheiten erleben.

Im Windschatten des Hogwarts-Express wurde ein Bauwerk weltberühmt: Der Harry Potter-Zug windet sich über eine Brücke mit bogenförmigen Pfeilern, die sich in die Senke einer zauberhafter Landschaft schmiegt. Diese Brücke gibt es wirklich, sie heißt Glenfinnan-Viaduct – und sie ist nicht nur für Harry Potter-Fans sehenswert.

Die beeindruckende Brücke mit ihren 21 Bögen und staksigen Pfeilern befindet sich beim Örtchen Glenfinnan. Über sie hinweg verläuft die Bahnverbindung von Fort William nach Mallaig. Dazu gehört sowohl der berühmte Jacobite Steam Train, als auch ein normaler Triebkopfzug. 

Das Glenfinnan Viadukt bezieht seinen Charme einerseits aus der Landschaft um sich herum: Im Hintergrund liegen zackige Gipfel, die oft von Wolken verdeckt werden. Im Vordergrund verläuft das lange Glen Shiel mit dem gleichnamigen Loch, das übrigens ebenfalls seine Rolle bei Harry Potter spielt.

Zum Anderen ist die Brücke selbst – trotz Betonbauweise – ein wahre Schönheit: Auf etwa 380 Meter Länge schlägt sie einen harmonischen Bogen in die grandiose Kulisse, wobei sie eine Höhe von bis zu 30 Meter erreicht. Ein Prachtstück.

Die Bahnstrecke wurde 1901 eröffnet und damit auch das Glenfinnan Viadukt. Erbaut wurde es von 1897 bis 1898 und zwar von Robert McAlpine, der – damals revolutionär! – nur Beton als Baumittel benutzte. Sie galt als derartiges technisches Wunderwerk, dass der Konstrukteur den Ritterschlag von King George V. erhalten hat – und außerdem vom Volk den Spitznamen “Concrete Bob”, also „Beton Bob“.

Von Loch Shiel aus hat man einen guten Blick auf das Glenfinnan Viaduct. Möchte man denn noch einen echten Moment mit dem Harry Potter-Zug auf der Harry Potter-Brücke haben, muss man auf den Jacobite Steam Train warten.

Diese Idee haben inzwischen täglich hunderte von Menschen, wenn nicht sogar tausende. Die ursprünglich vorhandenen Parkplätze reichten bei weitem nicht aus, um dem Besucheransturm zu verkraften.

Inzwischen wurden mehrere Parkplätz, die mit 3,50 £ pro für den PKW zu Buche schlagen, geschaffen. Weitere Parkplätze sind im Bau. Dazu gibt es natürlich die obligatorische Infrastruktur an Andenkenbuden, Fressbuden, Picknick-Plätzen, Ambulanz Service usw. usw.  Nur eine Toilette fehlt, dafür wird der zahlende Gast runter zum Besucherzentrum von Glenfinnan geschickt.

Ganze Karawanen machen sich auf den Weg zum Viadukt, um sich einen schönen Platz für die Foto- und Filmaufnahmen zu sichern. Achtung liebe Drohnenfans: Drohnen sind verboten!

Die Zeiten, wenn der Jacobite Train das Viaduct überquert, sind natürlich nur ungefähr. Am besten ist man früh genug da und sichert sich einen Foto Spot. Mir fiel da sofort die alte Sportreporter-Legende Hans Maegerlein ein: Tausende standen an den Hängen und Pisten ...

Wer den Zug gleich 2x sehen will, wählt den Nachmittag, denn dann kommt der zweite Zug aus Fort William über das Viaduct geknattert und etwas später der Erste zurück aus Mallaig.

Der Betreiber der Zuglinie empfiehlt dazu, zu Fuß auf der kleinen Straße unter dem Glenfinnan Viaduct hindurch zu gehen und dann links den den Berg hinaufzulaufen. So hat man einen Blick auf den Jacobite Steam Train in der Kurve. Natürlich ist man dort auch nicht alleine, da viele dort ihre Fotos machen.

Es finden sich aber überall in der Gegend tolle Punkte, von denen man einen schönen Blick hat. 

Achtung: die Gegend finden auch die unsäglichen Midges (ekelhaft stechende Kribbelmücken) total super und umschwärmen die wartenden Besucher. Von daher Mückenschutz nicht vergessen!

Blöd ist es nur, wenn die ganzen Menschen dort hocken und warten und dann wurde die Dampflok in die Diesellok umgetauscht. Dann hat man zwar einen Zug auf der Brücke, aber leider keinen Dampf dazu, was das Erlebnis natürlich deutlich schmälert.

Auf dem Rückweg kann man dann noch das Glenfinnan Monument besichtigen. Hier landete 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie und hisste sein Banner, um anschließend den Jakobiten-Aufstand zu führen. 

Die Standarte, die Fahne seines Vaters James VIII, Sohn des letzten regierenden Stewart-Königs auf britischem Thron. Sie wehte im Wind auf einer Anhöhe, gut sichtbar für mögliche Unterstützer – dahinter erstreckte sich das wunderschöne Loch Shiel, an dessen Ufern er gelandet war.

Tatsächlich war das hier der Beginn des großen Aufstandes der Jakobiten, der in Culloden schließlich traurig endete. Nach etwas über einem halben Jahrhundert setzte eine gewisse Romantisierung der damaligen Vorgänge ein, so dass man hier schließlich 1815 ein Denkmal errichtete. Die Statue oben zeigt übrigens nicht den Prinzen, sondern einen unbekannten Highlander.

Über eine kleine Wendeltreppe in dem Denkmal kann man sogar auf die obere Plattform gelangen. Von dort soll man einen guten Blick auf das Loch und die Landschaft haben. Was allerdings fehlt, ist Platz: Oben können vielleicht vier Personen stehen. Die Treppe lässt jeweils auch nur eine Person durch – Gegenverkehr hat Pech. 

Weiter geht es entlang des Loch Eilts. Die Straße nimmt hier das der Bahnstrecke gegenüberliegende Ufer. Am Ende des Lochs lohnt es sich anzuhalten und durch den Matsch ein Stück zum Loch zu gehen. Der Blick über das Loch mit seinen Inselchen ist wirklich nett.

Und die erste Insel von diesem Ende aus wurde als Drehort für Dumbledores Grab genutzt. Eine kleine Insel im Loch Eilt mit Bäumen darauf. Dank des Films „Harry Potter und der Halbblutprinz“ gelangte sie zu Weltruhm.

Es ist eine traurige Szene in den Harry Potter-Filmen: Hogwarts Schulleiter Albus Dumbledore wird zu Grabe getragen vom Riesen Hagrid. Ein Feuer umschließt den Körper und als es erlischt, liegt der Leichnam in einem weißen Grab auf der Insel. Später wird Voldermort hier den Zauberstab stehlen.

Die Filmemacher haben aber anscheinend einen Trick verwendet: Sie haben Eilean na Mòine digital auf das Wasser von Loch Arkaig weiter im Nordosten versetzt.

Auf dem Rückweg nach Fort William versuchen wir ohne Tischreservierung irgendwo zu Abend unterzukommen. Fehlanzeige! Alles ist “fully booked” mit diversen Reisegruppen. Am Ende geben wir auf und wir gehen zu der schottischen Fastfood-Kette. Das ist der weltweit bekannte Laden mit dem großen, gelben M - vom Clan der MacDonalds (kein Scherz!).

Der Laden liegt direkt, also fußläufig, hinter unserem Hotel. Vielleicht so 150 Meter entfernt. Da brauchen wir auch keinen Parkplatz suchen, sondern bleiben einfach auf unserem vor dem Hotel stehen.

Glenfinnan, located in the Scottish Highlands, holds historical significance as the site of the Jacobite Rising in 1745, where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard in a bid to restore the Stuart monarchy, resulting in the famous Battle of Glenfinnan, and today, it is known for its iconic Jacobite Monument and the Glenfinnan Viaduct featured in the Harry Potter films.

The Jacobite train stops here for half an hour.
