BENIDORM FEST 2024 - PARTICIPANTS

Yesterday (november 11) all 16 participants of Benidorm Fest 2024 were revealed - the songs will be revealed on december 14th. I wanted to make this post talking about all the possible representants of Spain in ESC 2024, as a little intro to them and how their songs might sound like. As always, everything will be below the cut :)

ALMÁCOR

Arturo Almarcha Corella, better known as Almácor (Villena, 26) is an urban artist that started his career in 2019. He has released an EP since then, and has collabed with artists like Henry Mendez or Chimbabala. This year he was nominated in the Best New Urban Artist in the Los 40 Music Awards. His most popular song is DE TO', and his last released song is Pop Tech.

ANGY FERNÁNDEZ

Angy Fernández (Palma, 33) is a LEGEND and our very own emo princess, she's an icon. Her leap to fame was being the runner up in the first edition of Spanish X Factor, in 2007, but she became a phenomenon when she starred in iconic teen drama Física o Química (2008-2011) as Paula Blasco. She also released various albums and songs, like the hit and iconic emo bop Sola en el silencio. After the show she has appeared in various TV programs like Tu Cara Me Suena, and has continued making music as well as acting in theatre, cinema and TV shows. Her last released song is Dualidad.

DELLACRUZ

Jorge de la Cruz Correa, better known as Dellacruz (Santa Cruz de Tenerife) is a Canarian urban pop singer that started his own singing career in 2019 after ample experience as a songwriter; he has written songs for artists such as Sergio Dalma, Xuso Jones, or Dvicio, among many others. His most known song is La Trama, whereas his last released song is Tocamos Cielo.

JORGE GONZÁLEZ

Jorge González González (Madrid, 35) first rose to fame after competing in OT 2006, and he since has been in two Spanish preselections for ESC 2009 and 2014. He has also participated in The Voice and in Tu Cara Me Suena, where he won in the 2020 edition. His most famous song is Por Besarte, and his last released song is Agüita.

LÉRICA

Lérica is a duo composed of Tony Mateo (San Fernando, 29) and Juan Carlos Arauzo formed in 2015 that sings pop infused flamenco and urban music, and have collabed with very big artists like Belinda, Gente de Zona, Abraham Mateo (brother of Tony Mateo), Cali y el Dandee or Juan Magán. They have 14 platinum albums and 9 golden ones, and are right now the most listened to Spanish duo in terms of streams. Their most famous song is Flamenkito, and their latest released song is Un Rato pa Siempre.

MANTRA

Mantra is a pop band made out of Carlos Marco (Alacant, 31), Paula Pérez and Charly Weinberg (Madrid, 25), born in 2020 when the three friends decided to start a project together. All three have been in the music industry for a long time; Carlos Marcos is the most-known of them, as he was part of the boyband Auryn (alongside Spain's representant in ESC 2021, Blas Cantó), who participated in the ESC 2011 preselection. They have an up-beat and positive attitude in their songs, and have released their first album in 2023. Their most popular song is No Te Esperaba, and their latest single is ¿Te Acuerdas o No?.

MARÍA PELÁE

María Peláe (Málaga, 33) is an icon and a flamenco singer known for her witty and ironic lyrics, with a modern spin on traditional sounds. She started her career in 2016 after studying Anthropology and Social Work in university, and so her songs usually have a social message. In fact, in 2023 she was awarded the Rainbow Award by the Ministry of Equality for her work in the LGBTQ+ scene. A song I really recommend of hers regarding this is La Niña, a very fun song about wlws (also the music video is soooo). She has released two albums - the second of which won an Odeón to Best Flamenco Album, and has participated in various TV shows like Tu Cara Me Suena. Her most popular song is Por si te vas, and her latest single is Letra Menúa.

MARLENA

MARLENA is an indie pop duo composed by Ana Legazpi (voice) and Carolina Moyano (guitar) that formed a band in 2017 when they decided to participate in X Factor Italy. They became friends with Damiano and Victoria from Maneskin, and decided to name themselves after one of their songs, Torna a Casa, where the name Marlena appears. They even sing some of Maneskin's song in their concerts. In 2021 they were nominated for Best New Artist or Group in the Los 40 Music Awards, and have collabed with Nil Moliner, La Pegatina or Despistados. I listen to their song bailamorena at least once a week (i wish i was joking), tho their most popular song is Me Sabe Mal. Their latest released song is Red Flags.

MISS CAFFEINA

Miss Caffeina, formed by Alberto Jiménez (voice), Sergio Sastre (guitar and keyboard) and Antonio Poza (bass) is definitely the biggest name this edition. They are a staple in the indie rock scene since their inception in 2006, and are especially staples in music festivals all over the country and abroad. They have realeased three albums and an EP, and their most known song is the modern classic Mira Cómo Vuelo, with over 13 m views on youtube. Their last released single is Para toda la vida.

NEBULOSSA

Nebulossa is an electropop band formed by María Bas (voice) and Mark Dasousa (producer, synths). They debuted in 2021, and define their formula as MPYMS (A lot of Pop and a lot of Synths), basing their music on the sounds an rhythms of the 80s. Their most popular song is GLAM, and their latest song is 1N84.

NOAN

Noan (Zarautz, 25) is a pop-rock indie artist that debuted in 2020. He has collabed with zzoilo or El Sueño de Morfeo, and I personally really enjoy his collab with Paula Koops, Odio que te Quiero. His most popular song is ME MATA(S), and his latest song is Zero (which is a cover btw).

QUIQUE NIZA

Quique Niza (Madrid, 20) is a musical theatre actor who has been performing all of his life; some of his notable roles are Kurt von Trapp in The Sound of Music, and Danny Zuko in Grease (I saw him live here, and he's incredible!). He has also appeared in some TV shows, like UPA Next and Días Mejores. He has only released one song so far, Ardo.

ROGER PADRÓS

Roger Padrós (Polinyà, 26) is a Catalan singer and piano player that first rose to fame as a participant in The Voice. He has since released an EP and an album, with songs both in Spanish and Catalan (he has confirmed his song for Benidorm Fest will be in Catalan). He is also the resident musician of Casa Batlló, in Barcelona. His most popular song is Digue'm, and his latest song is El Buit.

SOFIA COLL

Sofia Coll i Benito (Barcelona, 24) is a singer, actress, and dancer who rose to fame as a participant of The Voice Kids when she was 14, although she didn't release music until 2019, with songs that mixed Spanish and English. She was one of the protagonist of the TV show Bany Compartit (I watched the first episode while writing this, it's really fun and I really recommend it! Episodes are around 10 minutes long, and you can find all of them in RTVE Play and Youtube; they're in catalan, but there's Spanish subs available), and she was one of the dancers in Rosalía's mv for Fucking Money Man. Finally, she participated in the Catalan music contest Eufòria this year, ending up 4th. Her most popular song is Tú Mente y Yo Corazón, and her latest song is Génesis: Alive.

ST. PEDRO

Pedro Hernández, better known as st. Pedro (Santa Cruz de Tenerife) is an urban artist, rising to fame due to The Voice, where he participated in 2017. Through the program he met Juanes, his musical godfather. He has know collabed with Alizzz in Miami, where he lives now. His most known song is Cerca del Sol, and his latest song is No es lo que toca.

YOLY SAA

Yoly Saa (Pontevedra) is a Galician singer-songwriter singing in Spanish that has been making music since 2020, although she has also composed for other artists such as Luz Casal o Malú. She has released an EP and a full album, and participated in Dúos Increíbles in 2022. Her most popular song is Todo contigo, and her latest song is Mal de altura.

Love, Sin & Evil

Vampires archetypes.

The three archetypes of vampirism in love, sin & evil, symbolizes the three main vampires and who created the genre.

The wolf is an old aristocracy that has not unclenched its fangs of tradition and power through the centuries. Producer Dracula. The main vibes are taken from Castlevania and Vampire Ball.

Clan: Carstein

The cat is a mystical vice and temptation, inherited from an ancient era when vampires were not yet undead in the modern sense, but were either ghosts, witches, or demons.

Ancestress - Carmilla. The vibes are taken from the most romantic images of Bathory and of course Lilith.

Clan: Limia

The bat is a prehistoric image of a ghoul before it became romanticized from the hands of Russian and British classics. Those. a humanoid beast living by hunting and thirst.

His ancestor is, of course, Count Orlok from Murnau's Nosferatu, performed by Max Schreck. The picture decided to concentrate specifically on the monstrous part of the vampire and his obsession. I would especially recommend the interpretation of this image in the film “Shadow of the Vampire”.

And the third pillar of vampire hunters. This time from Japan. The Castlevania series revolves around a family that has been fighting Dracula for centuries. Of course the last name was changed from a Japanese corruption back to the real one. Actually, this is the image of daring heroes who never give up and find a way out of any situation. Her character was infused with Hollywood and anime notes of enthusiasm and pathos (especially in the person of the smart, cool heroine).

The comments noted the similarity with “Dee Vampire Hunter” and it is more than true. The image was, of course, based on the works of Yoshitaka Amano and Ayami Kojima, which generally influenced the visual style of both Castlevania in particular and the entire Japanese game development in general.

Her weapon is also a gaming reference. Only if in the original it was some kind of strange boomerang cross, then I put a real historical Wurfkreuz in her hands.

Abraham Van Helsing

Time period: End of the 19th century.

Another father of all vampire hunters whose name has become a household name. However, in the endless series of action games, it was forgotten that the original character was actually a doctor and scientist.

In addition to the original source itself, his image has a lot of ahem... the doctor from "Ball of the Vampires", if only he weren't so shamefully comic. I really liked the concept of this old man who: “Well, first I’ll give my aching knees a nice rest, and drink this wonderful lavender tea, and then I’ll rid the world of this troublesome misunderstanding called vampires.”

In the story, he personifies the path of the logic - everything is knowable, everything is manageable, everything is conquerable. The power of science! Where there is not such a clear line between the annoyingness of bedbugs and the tyranny of nosferatu. Of course, he is either German or Austrian by origin.

Solomon Kane.

Time period: Late 16th - early 17th centuries.

The character is as ancient as the very idea of hunters of evil spirits in the media. And in general the “father” of this archetype. By the way, it came from the pen of Howard, who also gave us another immortal Archetype: Conan the Barbarian.

In my story it displays the "Athletic" path i.e. act rather than doubt. Yes, in general, an unpleasant bloke who embodies the ideals of fanaticism capable of breaking even an ancient vampire with courage, and this trope “Who is the bigger monster?”

By literary origin he is British, but I also put a lot of Dutch traits into him.

Well, as I said above, Jorge de Fantasma speaks about him in SIF (Sail in the Fog) as a comrade-in-arms of his ancestor in the fight against evil spirits. This is also what Collins means when he talks about his shaman ancestors who converted to faith (and in the books he hunted evil there too).

Backstory: Doctor / Professor / Miss Nova Eris Teufel was born in Brooklyn in 1954, her mother was killed in 1958, and her father placed on death row until 1969, when he was executed. She was raised by doctors in a slew of psych wards all over New York until she was 18, when she was released into her brother's custody. Her brother, Mars Teufel, helped her through her studies and still lets her live with him. She befriended Stantz through talking about her experiences with ghosts. She teaches Criminology, Eschatology and Mortuary Science full-time.

I hope you're answering questions and this one doesn't bother you. I'm curious about Tin/Jupiter and the roles it may have in an alchemical story.

I'm away from my reference books for a while, but off the top of my head the one character who is associated with Jupiter/tin is Ron Weasley in Harry Potter. Ron refers to Jupiter a few times in the series--he exclaims "By Jupiter" for example, if I recall correctly.

I know @hamliet has a copy of Lyndy Abraham's dictionary, so you might want to ask her to look up Jupiter/tin.

One of the plates in Splendor Solis is devoted to Jupiter, so that's a potential source of story ideas for an author who wants to work the "lesser" metals in. I'm unable to upload the image, but here's a description of it by Jorg Vonagel, an art historian at the State Museums of Berlin.

Drawn by two peacocks, their tail feathers down, Jupiter’s planetary chariot navigates its way across the heavens. Holding two arrows as attributes in his right hand, the planetary god sits enthroned in his chariot while an aid, kneeling before him, offers him a bowl. The more noble circles of society fall under Jupiter’s rule, including the nobility and the clergy. The painter of the Splendor Solis expands this group to include alchemists, whom he depicts in the right midground in a state of industrious activity. Here, one of the adepts can be seen leaning over towards a helmet-shaped oven-top known as an alembic, while the other one inspects the flask he is holding in his left hand. The left-hand side of the picture is occupied by a pigeon-blue palace building which is based on an engraving by Daniel Hopfer. Out the front of the building a pope seated beneath a red baldachin is crowning a new emperor. As is the case with several of the illustrations in the Splendor Solis, the coronation scene incorporates a number of details drawn from a woodcut in Hans Holbein the Younger’s series Bilder des Todes (Pictures of Death). Showing the emperor kissing the feet of the pope, Holbein’s woodcut “Der Bapst” (The Pope) signals the submissiveness of the secular world in the face of the church’s omnipotence. In the Splendor Solis, however, the emperor not only receives the crown with his head upright but is also endowed with the physiognomy of Charles v, who had just been crowned Holy Roman emperor in Bologna in 1530. This discovery is quite remarkable in an artistic sense insofar as the painter of the Splendor Solis took the liberty of updating the stereotypical pope and emperor featured in the original source of 1524-26 in order to capture the latest historical developments. Set within the angular niche of the inserted panel is a glass flask upon a green laurel wreath. Inside the flask, three birds – black, white and red – are fighting with one another. This renewed allusion to the three principal colours of alchemy is discussed in the text that precedes it. The painter copied the motif of the three fighting birds from the alchemical illuminated manuscript of the Aurora Consurgens. It symbolises the separation of matter by heating, its subsequent purification in the next stage of transmutation, and, as will be seen in the following miniature, its fusion into one bird with three heads.

Jesús Abraham “Tato” Laviera Sánchez (May 9, 1951 - November 1, 2013) a community activist, poet, declamador, playwright, author, and “a chronicler of life in El Barrio,” was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico to Maria Sánchez Ramos, an embroiderer, and Pablo Laviera Ramírez, a political nationalist, bricklayer, and contactor.

His Lower East Side (Loisaida) fifth-grade Catholic schoolteacher in NYC refused to call him Jesús because he was Black and did not speak English, thus his middle name held. He affixed “Tato,” bestowed by his brother. He attended Cornell University and Brooklyn College.

He was the director of the University of the Streets youth program. He led the Association of Community Service Centers and Hispanic Drama Workshop. He taught creative writing at Rutgers University.

As president of the New Jíbaro Democratic Club, he secured Loisaida US Post Office formal recognition and marshaled 100 activists to seize the offices of Gouverneur Hospital. The successful protest prevented the planned closing of the only multilingual medical facility.

He was inspired to write after meeting Afro-Puerto Ricans Juan Boria, Cortijo y su Combo, Luis Palés Matos, Clemente Soto Vélez, and Jorge Brandon. His books include, La Carreta Made a U-Turn, Enclave, AmeRícan, Mainstream Ethics, and Mixturao. His plays include La Chefa, Here We Come, Becoming García, King of Cans, and Piñones. “AmeRican” is the most anthologized Puerto Rican poem and many of his works are part of the Latinx literary canon. La Carreta was the first Arte Público publication and he helped the press become the largest publisher of US Latinx authors. He is in Birthwrite, Los dos Mundos de Angelita, and The Browning of America films.

He received the Long Island State University Lifetime Achievement, Comité Noviembre Puerto Rican Heritage, Puerto Rican Embassy’s Pedro Pietri Hand, and American Book awards. Artist Don Rimx created a Tato-depicted mural memorial at East Harlem’s Taíno Towers. Pumas Tabasco Stays Unbeaten with Late Victory in Mexican Liga MX Action

<h2>Pumas Tabasco Remains Undefeated in Mexican League Action</h2> <p>On February 11, Pumas Tabasco kept their undefeated start to the 2023 season alive with a 2-1 win over Correcaminos in Mexico. The victory leaves them fourth in the Liga MX Expansion after five matches.</p> <p>Playing at the Olympic Stadium in Villahermosa, Pumas Tabasco scored late to claim all three points. In the sixth minute of stoppage time, Carlos López played a cross into the box that Rafael Durán headed past the goalkeeper for the winning goal.</p> <p>The scoring had opened in the first half when Sergio Ceballos finished off a long throw-in by Emiliano Freyfeld. However, Correcaminos equalized shortly after halftime from the penalty spot. Giovani Hernández's penalty was saved but he followed up to tap home the rebound.</p> <p>Despite conceding the equalizer, Pumas Tabasco held on for their fifth straight win to start the season. They have accumulated 11 points so far, keeping them in fourth in the early league table.</p> <p>Local coach Israel Hernández said after the match: "It was a tactical battle out there today. I'm proud of how my players adapted their game and worked hard for the team. We have a deep squad and I believe in this group's ability to achieve our goals if we all stay focused."</p> <p>Up next for Pumas Tabasco is a Monday night match away at Leones Negros. The game was originally scheduled for the opening weekend but had to be postponed due to field conditions. Piden parlamentistas mayores efectiva protección a sus derechos y justicia social

CHILPANCINGO * Octubre 4, 2023. ) Congreso de Guerrero Durante el desarrollo del Parlamento de las Personas Adultas Mayores realizado este

miércoles en el Congreso del Estado, las y los participantes demandaron la efectiva aplicación de las leyes en materia de protección de los derechos y acceso a la justicia social de los adultos mayores, que les garantice una mejor calidad de vida. Ante diputadas y diputados de la LXIII Legislatura presentes en el evento, las y los parlamentaristas plantearon también la necesidad de trabajar en la construcción de una cultura social con nula discriminación y violencia hacia este grupo social. De la misma manera, exigieron a las autoridades de los tres órdenes de gobierno la implementación de políticas públicas que garanticen un envejecimiento digno, responsable e incluyente, con servicios de salud y trabajo dignos, que contemple la habilitación de

estancias donde se impartan talleres, capacitación, deportes y actividades culturales y de recreación. Este inédito ejercicio desarrollado en el Salón de Plenos “Primer Congreso de Anáhuac” del Congreso del Estado logró aglutinar a una veintena de hombres y mujeres de las diferentes regiones de la entidad, quienes abiertamente expusieron sus inquietudes y propuestas para que la LXIII Legislatura las retome e incorpore en una agenda legislativa en favor del sector. En específico, destacó la petición a las y los legisladores locales de reformar el artículo 119 fracción décima de la Constitución Política del Estado para que se incluya el reconocimiento

pleno de los adultos mayores a partir de 60 años, y que los diputados federales planteen la misma reforma en el Congreso de la Unión. Asimismo, que en el Presupuesto de Egresos 2024 se etiqueten recursos para la construcción de hospitales con especialistas en cardiología, gerontología, fisioterapia, traumatismo y tricología, dotados de todos los medios para atender y trasladar a los adultos mayores. Pidieron también al Congreso local que legisle en materia de infraestructura, para que los espacios públicos y calles garanticen la movilidad de este sector vulnerable, y que se plasme en las leyes locales la entrega de sillas de ruedas, andaderas, bastones y demás aparatos que coadyuven a la movilidad y condiciones de vida de las personas adultas. De manera remarcada pidieron a diputadas y diputados intervenir ante el Gobierno del Estado y el ISSSPEG para que se solucionen los problemas que enfrentan los 7 mil jubilados y se les proporcione el seguro de jubilación por 120 días de salario al momento del retiro; que el seguro de vida no sea descontado del salario; seguridad social, y que las pensiones, indemnizaciones y prestaciones correspondientes sean pagadas oportunamente. Respecto a la participación y representación política, pidieron su incorporación en la toma de decisiones y en el proceso de creación de leyes, políticas públicas y programas, y que sus propuestas sean incorporadas en los planes de desarrollo anual y sexenal de los gobiernos en turno, para que sean apegados a la realidad y favorezca verdaderamente al desarrollo del sector.
