Lately my art hasn't been arting very much. So I spent this two weeks doing a bunch of busts of UY characters to overcome the art block!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't know how Sakai does to have so many characters and give spotlight to almost all of them. Respect.

Okay I know this is a turtles au and there's a lot going on with them but!! How much usagi lore are you tying into ew? Is there a jotaro :eyes:
Well, since Miyamoto Usagi’s age has always unspokenly fluctuated and adapted so that he’s closer to the particular turtles he’s friends with—in my au he’s only like 17.
So no Jotaro—or at least, he certainly won’t be his son. I could make him his little brother, but I’m idk how many Usagi characters I want yet. I’ll have Katsuichi as Usagi’s old childhood sensei, and more than likely Gen and Chizu as childhood friends. All of whom he thought were dead, but he later finds out survived the Foot Clans attack. (No Kitsune, since I think it’ll just be too confusing with two Kitsune’s lol)
Pretty much the most I’m taking from Sakai-sensei’s Usagi is his personality and values, and any other lore might just be hinted at if it is included.

Hello, I just wanted to let you know that I am really fascinated by your version of Usagi and wanted to know more about him. What are the similarities and differences between your version and the comic version of Usagi? And well the other characters of Usagi Yojimbo appear as well, like Kitsune, Gen, and Tomoe, and if so how are they like in your version?
hi!!! thank you for taking interest in my iteration, its means a lot. in my au usagi is a teen(around 16-17) who traveled from japan to new york because he “wanted to travel more.” in reality he is trying to avoid another encounter with jei, as the last one kinda scarred him a bit. the thought of jei being in any town he’s visiting took away the possibility of a peaceful night for him.
gonna cut it off here since i just noticed how long this is haha
ayway, he definitely still sticks his nose into other people’s business and gets involved into things that were 100% avoidable. He would still be incredibly good with kids as well as helping anyone who needs it no matter how difficult the task is. Either way he still has a shit ton of warrants on his head!!!
Another thing that is absolutely vital to him is his inability to commit to anything🙏 he likes his life of wandering and it feels wrong to him to stay put in one place. he does not want his life to change and that doesn’t really help if he ever wants a relationship. to make it worse he will not speak about his feelings, i think he’d rather be struck by lightning.
the way he acted before moving to the hidden city was very different. he was much more carefree and always got into situations without much of a plan. he’d throw in some jokes in the middle of fights and hype himself up sometimes. i based off this phase of his life off of his younger self in the comics. but after this he tries to take things more seriously, keeping to himself and not breaking rules as often and acts like a dick sometimes . he gets better tho after hating leo for a while and gets to know him better.
i did change some characters a bit like katsuichi. he still lives as a hermit but took usagi in when he was much younger due to his dad passing. he takes on a more fatherly role than just a sensei for usagi. i dont see him calling him a cockroach or a head lice knowing this poor kid just lost his dad😭
kitsune, gen, and tomoe are living their lives back in japan. kitsune still lives as a street performer and a thief and shes having a good life rn honestly. shes knowledgeable in some mystic items as they’re usually a part of her performances. she’d be active on social media platforms, she’d have very organized posts. she’s also the one who reaches out the most to usagi; she pokes fun at him but she does it as a way to check in on him since the last time she really saw him he wasn’t in the best shape. i haven’t really gotten to gen yet, but he’s still a bounty hunter. he’d still be a bit of an ass when it comes to money or usagi.
dont have much on tomoe, which is honestly a crime, but i have the idea that she is a student at her father’s school. i think she’d be entirely dedicated to her skills and wouldn’t have much time for anything else. she’d only ever see usagi if he’s visiting the geishu province. i plan on them leaving eachother on strained terms when he left japan, they’d eventually sort it out in the future though. there’s also chizu, who usagi has worked with in the past but eventually stopped. She’s completely dedicated to the neko ninja, willing to do everything she has to for their cause. she ended their friendship by deceiving him since “friendship is a weapon that is used by the ninja, but it can be much worse if the ninja develops feelings of friendship.”
chizu is honestly a big reason who usagi heavily distrusted leo at first; his experience with ninja isn’t very pleasant

Do you happen to have any thoughts, shenanigans, or ideas about Usagi and Leo from the apocalypse timeline? 👀
Any… hare-y conflicts hAHA… I’ll see myself out. /lh
Oh, anon. This. This is lovely!
(And it was supposed to be a one-shot but I'm splitting it into two, why do I keep doing this?!)
---
In another time, Miyamoto Usagi isn't attacked by a band of hired muscle sent from Japan by Lord Hijiki. No blue-masked turtle with a daring grin and flashing blades comes flipping into the vacant alley of the Hidden City bazaar to change Usagi's life forever with a quip on his silver tongue and wink to the baffled samurai he'd come to rescue like a damsel.
In another time, the Krang rip open the sky and run the humans underground, mixing with mutant and yokai kind for the first time in centuries for safety and security.
In another time, Usagi's sensei, Katsuichi—his father—is torn to pieces by a horde of infected Yokai before him and his little sister, Hana, roaring at them to run and leave him behind.
“Protect your sister! Live, Miyamoto Usagi!”
In another time, The United Council are formed--a (very) tentative alliance between the Council of Heads and the remaining human leaders of the United States to establish order and a semblance of peace as the world caves in, forcing everyone further underground.
It doesn't last longer than a year. Society finally crumbles, splitting into colonies across the country.
In another time, the survivors of the fabled Hamato Clan rise from the ashes of their own tragedy to take the lead of the Liberty Colony. Not all are on board with this, least of all the remnants of the crumbling Earth Protection Force, most notably their leader, Bishop.
In another time, Usagi joins the ranks to fight alongside the honourable (if unconventional) ninja clan, fulfilling his master's final order and honouring his own late ancestors to fight for those who cannot.
(The blue-masked turtle jokingly calls him “carrot cake” once, and Usagi decides he hates him.
It spurs a rivalry between them, which has half the base rolling their eyes, caught between exhaustion and fondness as they bicker like children every chance they get.
The other half starts a betting poll on how long it'll be before they finally kiss, for god's sake.)
In another time, the Krang break through their first base, and Usagi falls, injured. The blue-masked turtle—Leonardo—saves him from the jaws of a Krang hound, all grace, muscle and deadly steel dipped in searing rage. Usagi, speechless for once, lets Leonardo carry him to safety and passes out in his arms.
(Later, waking up in the makeshift infirmary, his sister cuddled under his left arm, Leonardo dozing fitfully on his right, Usagi stares at the turtle's pinched, restless face and decides he owes him his life.
A friendship blooms like a tentative rose among the thorns of a crumbling world, scathing jeers morphing into teasing jabs and scrappy spars in the vacant training hall. Their friends and family watch on with tolerant grins and, in the case of Donatello, mild jealousy but begrudging acceptance.
Soon, the jabs turn into hip bumps in the hallways, mirroring grins during training, brushing shoulders during war meetings, twinging hands during blackouts and lockdowns, sharing beds on colder nights and whispering secrets after screaming nightmares.
The rosebud blooms full and bright weeks later with Leonardo's awkward smile, sweaty palms and a stammered question that Usagi, hopelessly fond, answers with a kiss.
Donatello wins everyone's money.)
In another time, Usagi fails. A recon mission goes awry, and in her second-ever mission, Hana gets infected.
On his knees, he watches in frozen horror as his little sister, barely ten years old, writhes and screams in terror and agony as the Krang infection takes over. She begs her big brother through tears to kill her, spare her from turning, from hurting him.
It feels like hours, years, an eternity, infinity. In reality, it's only seconds as he slices Willow Branch through her chest.
Leonardo is there in the aftermath, stopping Usagi from taking his blind grief and rage out on the corpse of the Krang that killed his sister, yanking him away and holding him until his roars and struggles ebb, until they're on their knees in the abandoned office complex, Usagi sobbing his heart out in Leonardo's chest.
The days pass in a blur, but Leonardo is there, unfailing, patient, kind, loyal and true, and Usagi decides he loves him.
(A year later, standing among the gore and gravel of a rare but hard-earned victory against a legion of Krang, Usagi seeks Leonardo out. A fair distance away atop a fallen Mech suit, he stands tall and strong despite his exhaustion, covered in blood that's not his own, glowing in the spotlights of Donatello's searching drones. In that moment, he is beautiful, and Usagi doesn't—can't, won't—wait a second longer.
“Leonardo!” he calls.
Immediately, his boyfriend turns to find him, meeting his eyes across the way. “Yeah?”
“Will you marry me?!”
“WHA—?!” he hears Donatello squawk through the comms. Around him, their squad starts laughing and whooping and swearing in shock. April is screaming, shaking or slapping the nearest person—judging by the cries of pain, it's probably Donnie.
Leonardo's eyes are comically huge, his jaw gaping. Heart hammering, Usagi doesn't take his eyes off him, and he's glad for it when the slider's shock turns into a gleaming, helplessly delighted grin.
“You asshole!” he cries through gasping laughter, tears leaving scars down his bloodied face. “You couldn't—are you for real right now?!”
“Is that a yes?!” Usagi asks.
“IT BETTER F%&CKING BE!” Michelangelo hollers from—somewhere on the battlefield; honestly, Usagi had lost track of him in the chaos. “I AIN'T LOSING NO MORE BETS!”
“Language!” Raph barks on comms.
“I'M TWENTY-ON YEARS OLD, YOU BITCHASS SNAPPER! I CAN SWEAR IF I WANT TO!”
Leonardo throws his head back with a cackle, a trembling hand over his streaming eyes as his family devolves into an argument. Usagi climbs and leaps the distance between them just as the turtle drops his hand and faces him, golden eyes brighter than they've been in years.
“You idiot,” he chokes, reaching for Usagi's hand and holding it tight enough to hurt. “Yes.”
April screams in delight with the rest of their squad. Donatello hollers as his sister shakes him senseless, Raphael sobs, and Michelangelo lets loose a stream of mystic fireworks right as Leonardo sweeps Usagi into a spinning hug. Breathless and giddy, Usagi wraps his arms around his boyfriend's—fiance, husband—broad shoulders and kisses him. Leonardo holds him closer and kisses him back.
I won't waste this life. I won't waste our time together, however long that may be. I won't let you go, Hamato Leonardo.
When they part, Leonardo makes a face even as he presses their foreheads together. “Couldn't wait 'till I had a shower?” he chuckles. “I'm literally covered in Krang blood.”
Usagi nuzzles his nose against his own. “Apologies. I couldn't help myself,” he says, running a hand down Leonardo's plastron with a grin. “You looked very sexy just now. In a ravaged, war-torn hero kind of way.”
“Oho,” Leonardo raises a brow, his new grin downright devilish in a way that sends a shiver down Usagi's spine. “Ravaged, eh? That's a funny word to use outside the—”
“I swear to god, Nardo, if the next word out of your mouth is 'bedroom', I am going to be physically ill ALL OVER YOUR FACE!” Donatello shouts through comms.
That does it as Usagi collapses to his knees in laughter. He doesn't collect himself in time to avoid being whisked into a bridal carry by his fiance when the commotion (and mystic fireworks, Mikey) attracts more Krang in the distance. But he doesn't complain one bit.)
In another time, Leonardo and Usagi are twenty-two and married without a ceremony.
In another time, Hamato Usagi is happy even at the end of the world.
---
Stay tuned for part two <3

I just love the fact that Usagi gets so nervous after he found out that turtle babies are tiny. I wonder what the rest of the Tenshu gang think/react to Kaida being so tiny. I know the tmnt gang is like it’s just normal, but what is there reactions? I’m guessing Katsuichi’s reaction is just as worried
Part 2
It was early in the afternoon when they finally made it to the Tenshu. Jotaro walked between Usagi and Leo happy to hold onto Usagi’s hand, Leo’s cane was on that side but he would latch onto the fabric tied around it as away to hold on to his Dad as well. Leo had Sakura resting in his hip and Usagi had Ume on his. Kaida was resting in a small pouch around Leo’s chest. They walked though the portal that opened up where it always did now, underneath their tree.
Kitsune and Gen were there waiting for them as the stepped out. “Finally what took you so long Bunny butt?” Gen asked. Ume caught sight to them and imidiatly made grabby hands towards Kitsune. Her godmother quickly moving to pluck her from her Usagi’s arms. She blew a kiss into her niece’s cheek causing the girl to squeal.
“Sorry guys there was a bit of a mishaps this morning.” Leo excused their late arrival as best he could. They were all suppose to come together, but obviously Leo and Usagi had missed the meeting time. The last thing Leo wanted to do was to tell them why they were late.
Usagi’s worry about their daughter’s small size was endearing. But Kitsune and Gen were just as bad. If they knew that the reason the family was late was because Leo and Usagi thought they lost their youngest the two would lose their minds. Kitsune had already considered tying a ballon around the baby’s waist. Which Depending on how big she was when she started crawling Leo might just have to do that. Gen had wanted to stand guard over the little girl as she was ‘much to small’ to be left alone.
Leo love them, truly he did, he hit the jackpot when it came to in-laws. But he wished they’d calm down about Kaida’s size, he had been the same size once. She also inherited his strength, just as Jotaro had, she was far more durable then her size would have you believe. Not that Leo wanted to put that to the test, but he also didn’t want to over baby his daughter.
He had a feeling it wouldn’t get any better once Katsuichi saw her for the first time.
Speaking of which.
“Jiji!” Jotaro cried letting go of his Tou-san’s hand and running off down the hill. There walked Katsuichi who bent down so Jotaro could run straight into his arms. He picked the boy up and spun him around with a playful roar.
“How are you Lionheart?” Katsuichi asked as he tossed the boy in the air and caught him again. The little bunny was giggling up a storm as the big lion approached his parent. “My boy it’s good to see you.” Katsuichi moved Jotaro to rest on his hip and placed his now free hand on Usagi’s shoulder.
“It’s good to see you to Sensei.” Usagi smiled and gave his old master a respectful bow. Sakura started reaching for the lion as soon as he was in sight. Katsuichi turned to face her and Leo with a smile.
“Hello Blossom.” He said as he gently lowered Jotaro down so he could pluck Sakura from Leo’s arms. “Good to see you to Leo-kun.” He smiled at his son-in-law who returned the smile. Leo watched as the old lion hugged his daughter close placing a kiss on her head. “Now where is your sister?” Sakura pointed over at Ume who was still sitting happily in Kitsune’s arms. Katsuichi smiled at the girl and moved over to place a kiss on her forehead as well. “Hello Petals.” He knew better then to separate the little girl from her godmother. He would wait his turn to hold her.
Katsuichi gently handed Sakura off to Gen before turning to face the two parents. “So where’s my new granddaughter?” He was worried when he didn’t see the little one immediately. He had worried about their delay all day. After the twins had been born there had been some health complications. Leo had said that the girls had come a little early and just need extra care. He hadn’t seen them in almost six months after they left. He knew that the children’s health came first, he would never argue that. But he did miss his family terrible when they left. He had been thinking of retiring in Leo’s world so he could be closer to his children and grandchildren.
He still had yet to meet the newest. When he didn’t see a baby or a baby sling as he knew the boys had worn with the others, he started to grow worried. What if their delay this morning was to drop Kaida off as she had gotten sick like the twins had. No Leo and Usagi never would have left her if that were true. But then where was his granddaughter. He was more then happy with the first three children being here, but he really wanted to meet the newest member of their family.
Leo smiled at him and reached in to a little strap across his chest. It was far to small to hold a baby. Then Leo pulled his hand out and resting in his palm was the smallest little baby Katsuichi had ever seen.
He leaned down close to the little turtle unable to process what he was seeing. She was small, fitting in Leo’s palm well. They had put a little yellow bow around her waist. The little girl yawned and blinked her eyes open. She had Usagi’s ruby red eyes. Katsuichi knew some people found the color creepy but to him his boy’s eyes had always been warm and inquisitive. His daughters eyes were much the same as she blinked up at him. She then reached out and patted his nose with her little hand.
Just like that Katsuichi knew he would burn villages to the ground for her. Just as he would for his other grandchildren.
“Do you want to hold her?” Usagi had moved to stand at Katsuichi’s side also staring down at his littlest girl. Katsuichi nodded and held his hands up cupping them together to make sure she had a stable place to rest. Usagi gently picked his daughter up from Leo’s hand and transferred her over to Katsuichi.
The little turtle chirped up at him, before snuggling into his hands.” His heart melted.
“She does the same thing to Usagi-chan. My guess is it’s because you’re warm blooded and she’s cold blooded. The warmth from your hands feels nice.” Leo explained watching his daughter find a new napping spot.
“She’s so small.” Katsuichi whisper in awe drawling her close to his face.
“That’s what I said.” Gen agreed as he held Sakura close. “Strips, you sure she wasn’t early to?” He asked. He was worried that Kaida was to small for her age but he had no frame of reference for turtles. He just knew she was to small.
Leo sighed. “I’m sure, she’s perfectly healthy. She’ll catch up with her siblings in no time. Dad said by the time we were two we were the average size of a toddler if not slightly bigger.” Leo explained to Gen again.
“She’s so small.” Katsuichi repeated looking at the sleeping turtle in his hands. He looked up quickly at Leo and Usagi. “What happens if you lose her?”
Leo chocked on air. Well if they hadn’t answered that question this morning. Unfortunately Usagi chocked at the exact same moment giving them away.
Katsuichi’s head snapped up to look at both of them. “You already lost her.” He said it in a whisper as if horrified, and to be fair to him, Leo would be to if he didn’t have context to the story.
“You lost her!” Gen let out on an angry huff.
“When did this happen?” Kitsune questioned them. Both parties stepped closer holding the twins closer as the did so. Jotaro who had been standing beside Leo shuffled to hide behind his legs. Griping onto his pant leg for comfort. Leo reached his hand down to rest comfortingly on the boys head.
“We didn’t lose her.” Leo started to explain. He was keeping his voice calm for Jotaro’s sake as he didn’t want the boy to feel like anyone was mad at him.
“Then what happened?” That was Gen. Straight to the point and blunt. Leo knew he wasn’t trying to be combative, he just had a gruff way of putting things and always wanted his loved ones safe, so he tried to not let the tone get under his skin.
“This morning when I went to go get her, she wasn’t in her bassinet.” Usagi began to explain.
Leo picked up the story, giving Jotaro’s ears a ruffle as he did. “You all know how much Jotaro-chan loves his sisters.” There was a subtle nod from the group of adults in front of them. “Well he decided he wanted to help us out this morning by getting Kaida-chan for us.” Leo smiled down at his son who gave a shy smile back.
Usagi looked over at them fondly as he continued the story. “He just didn’t tell us what he was doing. So when I went to go get her I thought she was lost.”
“Not lost.” Leo reassured the group. “Just on an adventure with her big brother.” Jotaro’s shy face poked out from behind Leo to look at the group in front of them. Kitsune awed while Gen and Katsuichi let out a laugh. Now that there was context the whole story was rather adorable then horrifying as they initially worried.
“That’s our Lionheart always there for his family.” Katsuichi said smiling down at the small boy. Jotaro ran forward to hug his leg tilting his head up to beam at his Jiji. Katsuichi carefully handed Kaida to Usagi before scooping up the little boy again. “Well we should head inside. We were all quite worried at your delay this morning though I do understand it.” Katsuichi said smiling at the young parents. “But Lord Mifune and Lord Noriyuki have been anxiously awaiting your arrival.” Translation Lord Mifune wanted to see his grandnephew and grandnieces, and Lord Noriyuki wanted to see his big brother Leo and his children.
The family started making their way towards the Tenshu. It was almost lunch time so it was a perfect time to gather everyone together. Usagi watched as his family walked ahead. His children in the arms of his siblings and father. He held his youngest close to his chest and took Leo’s hand with his free one. They shared a smile and a quick kiss before following behind their family.
It was the start of a wonderful visit.

So I'm reworking/properly fleshing out my rottmnt!Usagi (well aware I'm late to the party) as I had originally made him when I was only just beginning Chronicles and I think early-mid 2000s era of Yojimbo
Tumblr media
He's a version of Yuichi Usagi, but still different enough I'm considering a name change as well but what I'm mainly thinking of is
Who his sensei will be. Because Yojimbo Usagi was trained by Katsuichi-sensei and Sōjōbō the daitengu, and SRTUC Usagi was trained by his Auntie and Karasu-tengu so im thinking of Rise!Usagi also being trained by a tengu SO!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He'd still have his training begun by his Auntie but his tengu sensei would straighten him out the rest of the way

Until I came across a stack of recent collections at my local library, I hadn't read any Usagi Yojimbo for a few years -- I knew I'd missed all of the recent full-color collections, but not that I'd also missed a few from the end of the series at Dark Horse, back when it was still published in black-and-white. If you haven't read any for a while, either, the series is as good as ever, and as much as I liked the old uncolored books the newer collections are fabulous, too. These are the three I liked best.
Usagi Yojimbo: Mysteries (Volume 32) by Stan Sakai. Introduction by Yuki Matsuzaki. Dark Horse, 2018. 9781506705842. 180pp plus a cover/pinup gallery. Contains #159-165 of UY Volume 3.
Usagi comes across a dead, high-ranking samurai in the woods, and finds a little girl hiding nearby. On his way to take her to Inspector Ishida, they're accosted by some samurai who want the girl and even go so far as to attack Usagi when he's buying her a meal. It's a huge mistake and only the beginning of a larger mystery that starts with finding the girl's father's confession. Thieves Kiyoko and Kitsune make an appearance, and of course my favorite scenes are the "The Body in the Library" chapters.
Usagi Yojimbo: Homecoming (Volume 35) by Stan Sakai, colors by Tom Luth. Introduction by Peach Momoko. IDW, 2021. 9781684058020. Contains #8-14 of UY Volume 4.
This volume starts with a graphic lesson on how tatami mats are made, which plays into the plot. Usagi heads to the north province where he grew up. He crosses paths with samurai transporting new tatami mats for Lord Gifu, who will use them as part of a tea ceremony for an emissary of the shogun. When the samurai are attacked, Usagi helps defend the tatami from the ninja. Later Usagi is pursued because he continues to wear the mon of Lord Mifune, which begins a journey to his home village, Mariko (the woman he loved), and Kenichi, his childhood friend and rival. Katsuichi-sensei (Usagi's teacher) and Jotaro, who is secretly now Usagi's son, also make appearances. The best part of the color version: seeing the blue Usagi wears during the fight scenes.
Usagi Yojimbo: Tengu War! (Volume 36) by Stan Sakai, art assist by Randy Clute, colors by Hi-Fi Design. Introduction by Kevin Eastman. IDW, 2022. 9781684058754. Contains #15-21 of UY Volume 4.
Usagi seeks his other master, a one-handed tengu named Sojobo. There's a flashback to how Usagi earned the right to be trained by him, and, in the present day, as you might guess from the title, Usagi finds himself in the midst of a war between supernatural creatures. Toward the end of the story he meets someone from his past, from just as he fled the battlefield with Lord Mifune's head. And then Usagi meets Yukichi, who remembers when their paths crossed years ago.

How did Jotaro came to be? Interested in hearing that story.
oh man!! i'm glad you asked because i've actually put thought into it ;w;
jotaro is usagi and leo's son from the future! they found him in a crumbling building during a krang attack when he was 2 and adopted him.
jotaro was sent to the past so that he could be safe, only taking a few things with him. clothes, his bokken, stuffed turtle, a necklace with his dads' promise rings, and a photo of the two when they were younger. past usagi found him wandering around in the hidden city, and got SO confused when he kept calling him "papa". he thought at first he was just being confused for jotaro's actual dad, but when no one recognized him, katsuichi (usagi's sensei/guardian in this au) agreed to let him stay with them. so usagi refers to him as his "little brother"* until jotaro finally sees leo. and then all the dots start to connect.
*lowkey based on how in the comics, usagi knows jotaro's his birth son, but calls him his nephew to avoid shock
WOW I REALLY LOVE JOTARO. he's just a BABEY ;o; i also feel like future!leo would absolutely go full Miles Hughes mode and never shut up about his husband or son (which makes his fate in the movie even worse >:3c fun fact in this au, that wound he has? it's from krangified usagi)

Usagi Yojimtober Day 23 - First meetings
At this point you all know I love Tomoe, but you know what I love more about her?? The way she doesn't hesitate to kick ass as soon as someone disrespects her!!
So I thought, what if instead of taking Usagi home in "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to The Tournament", Katsuichi still take him to the tournament so he can apologize properly for his behavior?
And then, when they finally find Tomoe and her father Usagi tries to say sorry, but things don't go the way he wanted and both start fighting again.
This is my idea of fun!

So since we know that Usagi tends to display some rabbit behavior.
Katsuichi-sensei Is a lion and in the comics we see that Usagi sometimes roar’s(usually when he fights)
Do the guys know that Usagi tends to do this? If they do, how do they discover it?
They figure it out during a fight, as you'd expect. Usagi's only roars he's let out while fighting with the turtles were when they were unconscious (or briefly dead), so they're definitely startled by the sound.
Usagi only roars when he's ANGRY. When he loses himself to that anger. He roars to let that anger out so he can keep control of himself. He doesn't lose himself often, so it doesn't happen often. Leo hears about it from Gen, Tomoe, Chizu and Kitsune before he ever hears Usagi's actual roar, and it shakes him how absolutely terrifying the sound is.
Usagi may be a rabbit but he was raised by a lion, and sometimes Leo forgets until it's very obvious.

btw Usagi’s timeline in Dirty Paws kinda looks like this:
6-10: trains under Katsuichi-sensei, returns to the school he attended with Mariko and Kenichi and bests Kenichi in single combat
11-13: retainer for Mifune, grows closer to Mariko
14: WAR, sees Mifune die and escapes with and buries his head, begins life as a ronin (Jotaro is born sometime here)
15: 1st Battle Nexus chasing death, defends Splinter from Drako
16-17: traveling his Japan, meets Gennosuke and several other Yojimbo characters like Tomoe Ame and Noriyuki
18: 2nd Battle Nexus, meets Leo
19: Leo lands in 2nd Earth, Real World pts 1/2 and Samurai Tourist happen
20: you are here

Miyamoto Usagi
Tumblr media
From the earth 2016-U23, Japan (year 1630).
Doe.
She/Her (trans woman).
Bisexual.
27 years old (going on dates with Lee since they were 19 years old).
She measures 1.66
White fur. Brown black eyes.
She left her clan after her sensei was killed and she became a ronin.
She came to the turtles' dimension after helping them defet Sabanti Romero (again). She was stranded there for a while and decided that she wanted to stay in their dimension with them.
It took her 4 years to learn English (and she's still not good at all).
She loves Lee very much.
Donnie doesn't like her very much.
Usagi was an orphan girl from Feudal Japan. The place where she spent her childhood was not the best, but she had nothing better, she had been there since she was a baby.
Aoki-san, one of the workers, told her to find something to do with her life so that she could get out of there and not end up like them, so she began to think how she could do it. In her child head, she came to the conclusion that the warriors who came to the house must be the answer, the boss said that they had a lot of recognition in the country, so Usagi one day asked one of them what to do to be like them (the man only answered when he got dr0nk).
He told her that to be a samurai one must be good at wielding the sword and winning battles, so the doe started training in the forest every day to become a samurai. One day her training caught the attention of a lion samurai, who asked the boss if he could take her to teach her how to be a samurai. She went with him, and faced many obstacles.
She did well, everyone praised her talent and before long many of them were interested in her progress, until she told her sensei that she was a girl. From that moment on, everyone looked at her very strangely, as if she shouldn't belong there, but her teacher didn't let them get in her way, Katsuichi-sensei accepted her and continued to train her as always, even teaching her to read (the femenines samurais existed and were just as lethal as the masculine ones, but they were not respected in the same way, they always had to be accompanied by a man, and they were not allowed to learn to read and write).
Her life was hard, but she was doing well... Until her sensei died. It was when she was 18 years old, they had been attacked by the enemy, she suffered several damages, her left ears had been cut off and her right had almost suffered the same fate, they also cut off her hair that she had been growing for years (it didn't seem very important but it hurt her), and she earned a distinct scar on her forehead, but what hurt her the most was that her sensei couldn't survive...
After that, during the first few days without Katsuichi-sensei, she suffered harassment from others, and because of that, it didn't take long for her to leave and leave the clan, she became a ronin.
She left her hair short to "close cycles" and began a new journey without destination.

She had been wandering for a year, working as a yojimbo from time to time, when some singular warriors appeared in her path, some... Kappa? Ninjas? She attack them thinking they were enemys.
When they convinced her that they did not want to attack her and they stopped fighting, they explained that there was something called the multiverse, it seems that they had met another version of herself and were looking for him to ask for his help, but for some reason they ended up in her dimension and not in his. The enemy that was attacking them (a VERY strange creature if she is allowed to say, and she has seen strange things) found them and attacked them, and Usagi decided to help.
They managed to defeat... That crazy creature, to tell the truth Usagi would need a few days to process what a crap adventure that was... But she doesn't regret helping that group, they were nice.
She had to stay in the turtles' dimension for a while until Renet and the Time Lord managed to open a portal to her dimension, but, Usagi doubted if she should go through. She had had a lot of fun these last few days with the turtles, aaaand she had liked the kunoichi in blue very much... And she had no reason to return to her dimension.
For some reason Time Lord let her stay. Everyone was very surprised by her decision, because she would stay in a dimension where she has to stay hidden?! Anyway, that was her decision.
Months later Usagi and Lee began dating, and the doe began to grow her hair again.

Title: Lucky One
Part: 1, 2
Verse: ROTTMNT
Summary: Maybe next time Leo will think twice before getting involved in someone else’s business
Characters: Leonardo, Miyamoto Usagi, Katsuichi
Pairings: GUYS NO, N O
Warnings: None
Portaling wasn’t exactly something Leo was unfamiliar with.
In the past few months since obtaining his sword, it was an invaluable resource that he only used in dire situations like getting out of danger (or grabbing snacks from the fridge, pulling the chair from underneath Donnie…)
But this was different.
Instead of instantly appearing in another location, it felt like every fiber of his being was being magnetized forward in a tunnel of blinding light. In a way, he would have mistaken it for Big Mama’s temporary portal discs, where his body was constantly trying to reform, contrasting to this moment.
He was barely aware of his own body.
Just when he thinks he’s trapped in the tunnel of light forever, he’s shoved back into reality. If reality felt like a very hard wooden floor. His sore, aching body immediately regretted his wish to be solid again. He rolls onto his shell and rubs his head, hoping to alleviate the ringing or the unnatural piercing brightness that made him worried he might have hit his head too hard.
But as his senses return, Leo sees a familiar figure fussing about his back while reaching into the floor (was that right? No, he wasn’t mistaken.) With his returning vision, Leo could see the figure was reaching into a fire pit on the floor. A hanging pot had been set to the side to make room for him. Leo sat back on his heels, looking at the pit as though he expected it to jump out at him before relaxing.
“Alright. Alright, I can put it back later, but this is safe for now. That was a bad idea. No, not a bad idea. A terrible idea! What was I thinkin'? Okay, I wasn’t. But it's fine now! Sensei will never know, and it’ll be like nothing ever-'' as the rabbit starts turning to pick up the pot, he finally notices Leo sitting behind him and freezes like a deer in headlights.
The two simply blink at each other for a moment before Leo puts on an awkward smile and a weak wave, “Heeeeyyyyyy.”
The panic in the rabbit's eyes (Usagi was it? That’s what he told Hueso) somehow seemed to double, “Nonononono what are you doing here!?! You can't be here-”
“Uuuuuh you’re the one who- actually, I don’t know what you did. Did you portal us?”
“No! I mean yes. But I also mean no! I didn’t-” the rabbit takes several breaths, obviously trying to work something out in his head. “I was being harassed by those- those things, and you weren’t talking. Then something loud happened and I got scared! I was trying to get away- and- and I pulled you with me? I didn’t know I could do that! Oh no oh no-” Usagi drops his face in his hands, “This is so bad. So very, very bad.”
“The portaling or your stress reaction? Cause, not gonna lie, they could both use work.” Leo gets to his feet with far less panic than he probably should have felt. Now that his senses had returned entirely, he could fully take in his surroundings. It wasn’t too cramped for a one-room home, but it left much to be desired.
The floor that had so kindly softened his landing was, in fact, woven with some sort of plant life. It had some give to it that Leo could feel under his bouncing toes, with very few decorations. Save for a few chests and a small window propped open by a stick and a front door. “This is your home? It's… nice?”
Leo picks up a clay pot and looks over it with a grimace before tossing it over his shoulder (barely noticing the sound of Usagi diving after it). “I mean, I think. Where’s your tv? Radio? Bluetooth?” Leo opens a chest to his right and starts digging through it, tossing clothes and wooden trinkets over his shoulder. He hears Usagi squawk in panic again, diving around to catch the more fragile items before his hand grabs Leo’s shoulder and gives a hard yank back. He put the objects back, meticulously trying to put them back the way they were.
“Can you stop!? You’re making a mess!”
“Bro, seriously, your setup is something out of Lou Jitsu in Dill and Bread's Eggcellent Adventure. Mind if I take a selfie for my bros? They’ll never believe me. Say nothing if it's ok!” He says, already pulling his phone out sideways and angling it to catch his face (framed to perfection by his thumb, forefinger, and devilish grin). Behind him was a very confused Usagi who was either about to strangle him or pass out. As Leo takes the picture, his eyes drift to the corner to check the battery life. That’s when he notices something else that makes him audibly gasp and hold the phone closer to his face to ensure his eyes aren’t deceiving him, “Wh-.” Without looking away, he reaches back and grabs Usagi’ by the front of his kimono and yanks him over, “What is THAT?!” he shoves the screen towards Usagi.
“What is what?! What am I even looking at-”
“T H A T,” Leo points at the screen with such intensity. Usagi raises his hands in panic, “Th-that spot! The bars, the waves! The wifi! The memes! The MEMES!!!! What sort of wifi-less hell is this!?” He falls onto his knees and curls up on his side in the fetal position, “Am I in the eighties,” Leo asks himself in horror.
“Please, please calm down! It’ll be alright! If you quiet down I will find you the memes-”
Leo looks over his shoulder at the rabbit with a loud scoff, “you can not FIND a meme! Memes are born during special events when a well placed moment meets an excellent joke, one does not simply MAKE a meme!”
He's so melodramatic and loud that, at first, Usagi simply pulls down his long ears over the sides of his head with his eyes squeezed shut. “Alright, alright. One problem at a time. You can not stay here. If you calm down and follow me, and stay calm,” he adds quickly. “Then I can get you home, and you can find your own memes, alright?”
“Why didn’t you say so sooner? Pizza Supreme, I almost panicked.” Leo says as he climbs to his feet, ignoring Usagi dragging both hands over his face. The rabbit returned to the fire pit, pulling out what Leo finally recognized as the katana and wakizashi he had seen Usagi wearing earlier, “You do know swords don’t normally go there, right?”
“I know that, but I was going to put them back later when I had time..” Usagi looks to the window where Leo sees a windchime, “Which I have even less now, so let's make haste.” Usagi hurries past Leo to the entrance, sliding the door open. Leo follows, and for the first time, he sees where he’s ended up.
Leo wasn’t sure what he had been expecting, but when he adjusted to the light, he saw (to the bane of his acrophobia) he was, in fact, on some sort of cliff edge that gave way to a large valley below. It went on for miles without any man-made structures. The edge gave enough room for a large garden and a clothesline. A small river ran out just outside the property and emptied over the cliff into some water underneath, with a narrow, flat bridge covering it. A nearby space was cleared out and rounded by some flattened stones that was probably used as a training area. Leo looks back to the house to see a wooden structure elevated slightly off the ground with a thatched roof covered in large rocks.
He starts to realize that there’s a good chance he’s not in his eighties. But before he can dwell too much, Usagi pulls on his arm.
They go down a path that runs along the side of the cliff. It looked wide enough for two people to walk side by side, but it left much to be desired and barely looked stable enough for half his weight. Usagi must have noticed his anxiety, and for the first time, the worry around his eyes let up, “It's alright. It's just made to look that way. It's safe.”
“Um, sure.” Leo steps out for a moment to move forward, and when he doesn’t fall to his death, he takes another. Usagi watches him a moment longer, probably to make sure he is actually going to follow, and starts walking at an uncomfortable speed. As Leo steps into the same spots as Usagi, he finds his confidence and manages to keep up, “For the record, if you actually want neighbors, you might want to update your method of transportation.”
“I did not build this path. Nor do we need neighbors.”
Before Leo could ask who ‘we’ was, the path turned inward to a tunnel barely visible at their angle. Usagi turns as though he’s about to enter when his ear suddenly twitches, and his face fills with horror. “Don’t make a sound. Let me-' ' before Usagi yelps loudly and draws his now wet hand back with disgust, “Did you lick my hand?! What is wrong with you!?”
“What's wrong with you!?” Leo demands back, but Usagi grabs his arm.
”Just please, please keep quiet for me. Please, please. I’ll find you a place to hide.” Maybe it was the fact this seemed like a different fear than the one he had seen in the house, or the way Usagi was now clutching his swords to his chest as though they were sin personified. But Leo grabbed the words from the rabbit, looked over the ledge, and swung down to a large out jutting rock that he flattened himself underneath. The turtle was now hanging by his fingertips on to, thankfully, secure hand places.
There’s a large enough gap in the side that he can look through and see Usagi spinning around in utter confusion, looking for him (honestly, one of his favorite things about being a ninja) before he turns back to the tunnel and straightens up, “Sensei! You’re back so soon!”
Sensei?
Leo moves around to get a closer look but cannot see anything until a tall figure exits into the sunlight. A tall lion wrapped in a dark blue kimono. His tan fur was traced with a gray that spread to his long dark red hair and beard. It gave the appearance of a mane, and it was the only indication of what he was. At the sight of a katana and wakizashi on his hip, Leo puts a hand over his mouth and lowers himself more. He wasn’t sure if the lion could reach him even if he could see him, but he didn’t want to take the risk.
“Usagi? What are you doing out here? Did you finish your meditation for the day?”
“Yes Sensei, I finished up a moment ago and thought it would be alright to stretch my legs.”
Did he meditate every day? Sheesh, even the one day a year Leo meditated was boring. He couldn’t imagine doing it every day. But the Lion nods with a slight smile, “Good, I’m grateful to have a student who takes his training seriously. But you should return home now. I don’t want you wanderin' off too far.”
“Y-yes, Sensei. I just-” but Usagi stops as the Lion takes off his woven back carrier that looks full of firewood and product. As Leo moves to see the inside better, the Lion freezes, and for a moment, Leo thinks he’s been caught. That must've also been Usagi’s fear since he quickly added, “I found a fresh source of bracken the other day, and I was hoping to get it before dinner to surprise you.”
There is another pause, but another smile graces his face, “That's very considerate of you. But do not go far and return home as soon as you’re done. Understood?”
“Y-yes sensei, thank you,” Usagi says with a bow before going down the tunnel. Leo doesn’t dare to move until the Lion disappears down the stairs back to where the house sits. Even then, Leo crawls up the side and stays low, only standing up when he steps into the cave. He nearly runs into Usagi, who jumps nearly a foot in the air, “Gods! Where did you disappear to?!”
“Don’t worry about it. Just be happy I know how to hide from authority figures.” Leo says as he pulls the swords from their safe position on his shell. Then, as he goes to hand them back, he looks at the blades again and looks at them an inch closer.
The handle, though worn, has dust nearly ingrained into the fabric, and as he angles them up to inspect the sheath, Leo sees the same effect against the dark material. “Sheesh, do you ever use these things? They’re-” before he could finish his undoubtedly hilarious joke, Leo looked to see Usagi return to his anxious stance. Rather than just pointing at Leonardo, Usagi also looks at the swords. As if he wasn’t sure which to be more worried about at the moment. Leo takes out the wakizashi and hands them back to Usagi, “It's ok, see? I’m not taking them.”
“I- I know you weren’t. I just, I need to return before Sensei finds out I took them.” But, again, being a master rule breaker, Leo had a feeling it was more than that, “Your teacher seems like a really strict man. Is he your Yoda or something?”
“Who is- never mind. His name is Katsuichi. He is my teacher and a master samurai.”
“Oh, that explains,“ Leo waves his hand over the rabbit, “This whole situation.”
“Situa-” Usagi looks down at himself in confusion, ”what situation? You just gestured to all of me-”
“Agree to disagree, but yes, you are a situation.” Then a thought occurs to the blue turtle, “When was the last time you saw another person before today?”
Usagi breaks eye contact as his shoulders bunch up by his ears, which is almost impressive and is enough of an answer for Leo, “That long?”
“Sensei leaves once in a while to visit friends and I have an Uncle who visits sometimes with small gifts but I am not to leave the mountain until my training is complete, and no one comes to the mountain.”
“What about your parents? Don’t they ever- '' Usagi breaks eye contact, gripping his other arm self-consciously. Leo didn't have to be Mikey to understand what that meant, “Oh-”
“Let us just get to our destination and get you home. It's the least I can do for accidentally bringing you. Then we can move on with our lives.” Usagi starts walking on ahead before Leo can say anything. Leo lets out a small sigh before following after him and follows after him glancing over at the path.
Leo knew how to go unnoticed and leave no trace, but for a path used every day by a teacher, he sure seemed to go out of his way to make sure it was almost unnoticeable. And if he hadn’t been walking in Usagi’s footsteps, Leo would have slipped off and made a Wilie Coyote imprint at the base of the cliff.
Before he could think too deeply about it, Usagi finally stopped and gestured for Leo to follow him into a large crack that, like most of the path, Leo almost looked over. They followed the trail, and the stone pressed him from either side even though he wasn’t bigger than Usagi. But Leo’s shell couldn’t give in to the rock, and it scraped against him, forcing him to put his hands over his head to make room.
Leo feels his mask catch on a piece of rock, “Agh- hold on, hold on!” He calls after Usagi as he tries to twist free.
Usagi looks back his way with a sigh, “Oh for the love of-” He makes his way back in the turtle’s direction. “Duck down,” he tells Leo, who does his best, as Usagi starts messing with the caught material, “I do not understand why you wear a mask, modesty does not seem to be a problem with you.”
“Dad says they’re ninja masks, but I kinda think it was the only way he could tell us apart,” the turtle says with a smirk.
Leo hears what almost sounds like a chuckle, but before he can say anything, the material finally comes free. “There, we’re almost there,” Usagi says as he starts back down the tunnel.
Leo reaches back to check his mask tails and feels the larger-than-comfortable rip that makes him gripe, “Looks like I gotta dig out the spare mask when I get home.” The sound of rushing water meets him before the small pass finally gives way to what looks like a much smaller clearing than the one Usagi lived in. A massive crack in the ceiling allowed the sun to feed the grass inside. There was a large stream that ran almost too quickly for comfort. It was undoubtedly fed the stream at Usagi’s home, “This your hang-out?”
“Not exactly, I spent a lot of time here trying to figure out the swords.” Usagi gestures to the swords on his waist, “where Sensei couldn’t see me.”
“Yeah explain that to me, he’s your teacher right? Why would he give you swords he didn’t want you to use?”
“It's not like that. They’re not…mine?” For not the first time, a look of guilt crosses Usagi’s face, making Leo grin widely.
“Ohhhh, I recognize the ‘I did something I’m not supposed to’ look. I INVENTED that look!”
“It’s not like that! Sensei was out, and I was minding my own business sweeping the grass and I just so happened to see a spot under the house that looked like it was disturbed. So, I just happen to crawl under and dig it up and I just so happen to find them-”
“Ok that’s a lot of lawyer-speak for ‘I was snooping and found something I wasn’t supposed to-”
“It was an accident! Kind of. It was kind of an accident. I meant to put them back! I truly did, but I was drawn to them after I activated them. That was an accident. And there was a book with them, and it had all these places and instructions,” He adds quickly before Leo can make his ‘sinners’ face again) “And- and I was curious, so I started practicing here and- and I thought I’d go on a test run.” Usagi squeezed his eyes shut, and Leo waited for him to continue. Instead, Usagi put the swords back on his waist, “‘It doesn't matter. None of it does. As soon as I’m finished helping you, I’m going to rebury them and go back to my meditation. My teacher wants that, and I should have never disobeyed him.”
“Ok, wow, so your first time off the mountain version of Rapunzel's tower and that’s it?”
“You saw what happened! I got in over my head, enraged two locals, and nearly got crushed by a building. Clearly my teacher was right-”
Leo had almost forgotten about that last part, but either way, “You ended up where you wanted, didn’t you? So what, you enraged two weirdos. That's just New York. I do that every day and I”m only related to one of them. Take it from me, bun-man, swords like ours want to be used. They,” pausing at Usagis’ confusion, “Oh right, I got a sword that does the portaling thing too.”
“You have a- why did you not mention that sooner?”
“Honestly, I kinda forgot? It's like having a shell, you get used to it and forget you have it after a while, but I digress. Swords want adventure, and they want to be useful. You felt those swords, right? They called to you?” Usagi nods slightly, “Then they think you’re ready for an adventure too. No one knows New York better than my bros and me! Let us help you, man! Let's have an adventure!”
“I- I can not. As I explained my teacher doesn't want me to leave the mountain-”
“Yes, but he didn’t say anything about staying in this particular dimension.” Usagi only gives Leo a flat look in return, “You said he leaves sometimes right?”
“Once every few months to visit a friend-” Usagi paused, “He has been talking about visiting his friend's fencing school. He would be gone for several days, but- No, I can not break his trust.”
Leo wants to argue, but he takes a moment and a deep breath, “Yeah ok. I get it. You don’t have to decide anything now. That’s not fair on you. How about this, I’ll portal to this spot innnnnn, three days and you can give me your answer then. Heck, you can leave a note telling me to eat a rock and I’ll only come back once in a while to annoy you. Ok?”
Usagi gives him a look that Leo doesn’t recognize, but after a moment, it finally breaks into a small smile and the chuckle he had heard back in the tunnel, “You are strange. But I have not witnessed something strange in a long time.” He moves over to the water and draws out his swords. The rabbit shakes his arms to loosen up with his eyes closed.
After a moment, Leo notices the sounds of the stream absent and sees the stream. The rushing current seems to bulk and twist past Usagi – as though it was magnetizing to his form without stopping the river's flow. Light starts at the hilt and outlines the blades, giving off a faint transparent mist. Usagi strikes his swords in a crisscross pattern and leaves two lights in their place that form a large tear in the air with the same light Leo recognized from before, “This should take you to the area where we departed, though I can’t promise it's the same spot.”
“Thanks bun-man!” Leo turns to jump in before doing a quick spin and giving Usagi finger guns, “Think about it! Would you rather live as a hermit or actually live?” With that, Leo jumps back through the portal with his arms behind his head.
After Leo disappeared, the portal faded with him, and the river resumed its natural course. Usagi waits a moment before blinking, “That fool never even gave me his name.”

Where's your dad?
My biological parents passed away when I was a baby, so I don't really remember a lot about them. My adopted dad, Katsuichi, is back in Japan in Neo Edo! He helped Auntie take care of me and Miyamoto growing up and eventually became Miyamoto's Sensei!
