Amphibia - Vacation Part 4: Koala
“Oh boy, she’s tearing up.”
Sasha leaned on the little wooden fence as she watched the attendant hand Anne the koala, who was looking decidedly disinterested in the whole situation. They were up in the mountains, at a little town called Kuranda, having taken the cable car up; they would later take the train back down.
Marcy laughed as Anne’s eyes became glassy as she looked at the fluffy marsupial in her arms. She leaned in next to her - they were doing a couples photo with the koala, and Sasha was watching.
“Oh, you’re such a cute little baby boy… what’s his name?” asked Anne.
“So you didn’t want to be in this?” the man next to her asked.
“Nah, man, I’m doing the python after this,” replied Sasha.
“Nice,” said the man.
They watched as the two girls smiled for the camera.
“You don’t feel left out?” he asked.
“Hm?”
“That it’s just them, I mean,” said the man. “Not to assume anything, but they seem pretty close.”
“We’re all close,” said Sasha.
“Yeah, but they seem… well, closer.”
Sasha snorted.
“They’re close in a different way,” she said. “Though they don’t really see it yet. Doesn’t mean I’m less close to them. We’re an ensemble.”
She smiled.
“Just cause you’re not romantically in love doesn’t mean your not in love,” she said, “and platonic love isn’t any less important than romantic love. You get what I mean?”
The man blinked.
“It’s going over my head a bit, mate,” he admitted.
“You’d understand if you knew us,” Sasha shrugged. “We don’t have to explain anything to anyone.”
“Good outlook, that,” nodded the man.
There was a flash as the photo was taken, and the attendant walked over to take back the koala. As they did so, Anne burst into tears.
“No!” she exclaimed. “Me and Charlie have a bond! You can’t separate us!”
“Anne, you’ve got to give him back to them,” said Marcy softly.
“Nooo! He is my son!”
“Ho boy,” sighed Sasha as Anne dodged the attendant, the koala still totally disinterested in everything going on, “this is the time we petted the meerkats all over again…”

Monday, March 11, 2024: We took the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway from Cairns to Kuranda. (The train was not available because of recent rains.) It was an enjoyable long ride. The highlight was a stop at Barron Falls, which was especially full due to rain. We even saw a rainbow!

It’s a city in Queensland, on the tropic north east coast.
The population is about 150,000 plus lots of tourism is happening here.
Some of the world’s most beautiful diving spots are here, on the Great Barrier Reef.
It’s known for agriculture, the port, and now a destination for worldwide travel.
The best time to visit is spring or fall, as the tropical rainforest and climate is lovely nearly anytime.
The people here are genuine and really easy to relate to. They are kind and personal and warm. You can meet them where they are and get to know them with a few nice greetings and respect for their surroundings. When I visited, I met several of the locals and they were all helpful and accommodating.
I flew to Cairns from Brisbane, and stayed for about a week before flying to Alice Springs. The Great Barrier Reef was my destination and I enjoyed the boat trips Snorkeling with the turtles and seeing the many Islands.nI’d like to name all of the nearby islands, but there too many to name. Some islands are not for humans because they are protected. Here are three main ones, where you can spend the night if you want.

Besides the ocean, on land, you’ll want to visit the Kuranda Scenic Railway. It’s built into the mountain it seems in some areas. It’s a train right through a dense rainforest, with steep ravines and picturesque waterfalls within the World Heritage listed Barron Gorge National Park. Fourth Stop (I) : Cairns and Great Barrier Reef
Diving at the Great Barrier Reef was THE highlight of our trip. Lili and Leon dived the first time after the certification lessons in the lake. We fell in love with the sea life - nemos, turtles, fish of all colors and sizes, and the coral garden. We also saw sharks! We lived aboard for the 3days+2nights diving. The diving instructor won the kids' hearts. She brought joy and fun to the kids during the dives and on the ship. She made even virgin colada cocktail drinks for the kinds every day!
After returning to the land, we rented a car and drove to Kuranda, a small village in the middle of the rain forest, full of wildlife and aboriginal culture. We drove 30 minutes to a train station to change to the nostalgic sightseeing train to go up to Kuranda. The aboriginals show their dancing, boomerang throwing, spear-throwing and music playing skills. We returned to the car parking with the cable car. The cable car flew over the rain forest. It has not only windows 360 degrees, but also a glass bottom. A different perfective to view the rainforest, waterfalls and wallabies!
