Pheelz And Young Jonn: The Nigerian Producers Now Succeeding As Recording Artists
Pheelz’s EP, Pheelz Good arrived in January, and it is a fine summation of his foray into performing artistry. Before this he had secured his place in the industry with “Finesse”, the mellow Afropop joint from a year ago with a chorus so addictive it became a Tiktok legend even before its release. The song’s popularity stretched beyond Nigerian borders, landing spots on the UK’s Official Charts and the Billboard Global 200 after an incredible global run. He followed this up with “Electricity” 5 months later, recruiting Davido for a single that lived up to its predecessor enough to open questions about which song was better. Subsequent releases in “Balling” and ”Stand By You” restated the undiminishing depths of his talent while showcasing his impressive range, with each addition helping to etch in permanent ink his new artistic status. Pheelz Good is therefore curated as a palette for his music, displaying in equal measure these fan favorites and a new set of songs he intends to propel him to the next stage of his career.
Pheelz is basking in his success, and his decision to take charge of his own music—after a decade spent laying the beats for other artists—is proving more and more intelligent in its planning and execution. His career began in a fashion similar to other young creatives—in the backrooms of studios of a more established act, this time the legendary Street Pop producer, ID Cabasa. There, his career grew alongside Olamide’s, who at that time was preparing to exit the incubation stage of Nigerian music and approach the limelight. Together they spun party starters like "First Of All" and "Durosoke", and as Pheelz grabbed a chunk of production credits for Olamide's YBNL and Baddest Guy Ever Liveth albums, the talented pair built their careers and portfolios while building each up. With Pheelz’s crossing over to the performing side of music, he sits at the charge of a vanguard of producers opening up their craft to take on more than just beat making. As Pheelz alluded to in a recent interview, he had been supplying backup vocals on as much 90% of his produced tracks, in addition to taking some of the songwriting burden as music producers often do. Between 2015 and 2020, he interspersed his production career with the occasional song of his own, leading up to 2021’s Hear Me Out EP where he would make his most committed step toward his current status, before following it up with “Finesse” the following March.
Young Jonn, another music producer who made a significant mark on 2022’s music chapter, has a career with an uncannily similar path. He began his journey looking up to Olamide and Pheelz in Hit Factory studio, which at the time had an affiliation with Olamide's YBNL, while he worked on his own beats he hoped would one day be graced by the rapper’s voice, a wish that was granted with the release of "Story For The Gods" in 2014 .The 28 year old artist also possesses credits to some of Olamide’s most alluring Street-ready tracks, including bona-fide anthems like "Bobo", "Wo" and "Science Student", culminating in taking complete charge of Olamide’s 7th studio album, Lagos Nawa, with the sole exception of "Shine", which Olamide produced himself. Since then he's opened his services to other members of Nigerian music's top class, including Davido, Kizz Daniel and Tiwa Savage. His entry into music wasn't quite the start and stop motion of his YBNL colleague; he took the gradual decision to slow down his music production while he invested an increasing studio time into writing and recording his own music.
"Dada", his March 2022 release was his statement of intent, and since it coincided with the announcement of his signing to Chocolate City as a recording artist, it was clear Young Jonn had put his hands on the plough and had no intentions of looking back. That proved to be the right decision, as the song quickly rose in popularity and became a fixture on the airwaves, so much so that Davido wanted in on the action in a bigger, better remix. Young Jonn sought, as is to be expected, to cement this stand with some projects, interspersing these singles with the releases of the EPs, Love Is Not Enough and its Vol 2, where he laced his melodic tales of love and heartbreak over bouncy Afropop production. Already he has made a fine start to the year, with a long-anticipated collaboration with Olamide that arrived earlier this month.
Pheelz and Young Jonn are currently the most prominent travelers of this route, but they are not the first. KDDO (Or Kiddominant) earned his credits behind the boards stamping his signature tag to legendary Afrobeats records, especially Davido’s “Fall”, which is still accumulating certifications five years post-release. His rebranding came with more than just a name change, and the newly christened KDDO released “Beamer Body” in April 2021, with his debut EP Too Late Too Lit arriving a month later. It featured Mayorkun and The Cavemen, as well as South African act Sho Madjozi. His collaboration with Cassper Nyovest, the Amapiano-tinged “eWallet” also made an appearance on the EP a year after its original release, making it clear KDDO intended his project to have a bi-national appeal. The artist is currently gathering laurels via his work as co-writer and co-producer of Chris Brown’s “Under The Influence”, while he plots his next big move in music.
Before these men, many other artists had spent their formative years as music producers before committing to singing, though these periods admittedly did not last long enough for them to make a mark as music producers. CKay’s voice can be heard at the start of “Ella”, Dice Ailes’ love ballad from 2017, as well as other Chocolate City records from that period, as he cut his teeth in the industry and slowly settled into his artistry. His production credits can also be found on parts of his breakout EP, CKay The First, most notably on the global smash, “Love Nwantiti” that brought it to relevance. Tems too, possesses a history of self production, one of many similarities the singers share, as her debut EP, For Broken Ears, came off the back of several DIY sessions learning production on Youtube.
Artists pulling themselves to popularity with songs and projects they produced, wrote and delivered themselves is impressive, but even more so are creatives that juggle both roles even after establishing themselves in the music industry. Maleek Berry self-produced cult classics like “Been Calling” and “Juice” (with Ycee) while working with other acts like Davido, Wande Coal and Runtown in a strictly production capacity; Tekno may be more famous as the harbinger of the catchiest feel-good tracks around, but he was the producer and songwriter of Davido’s “If”; Don Jazzy spent his time at Mo’hits and early Mavin days doubling as producer and artist but has now stepped back from both and taken a role guiding other young artists behind the curtain. With Nigerian music’s time in the sun opening up channels for even more artists to join in the fun, it wouldn’t be surprising to see other producers make this transition, ready to take more a conspicuous spot in the industry and gain a fanbase for themselves. Pheelz and Young Jonn have set an example with their 2022 headlines that there are no limitations to creativity, and it will be interesting to see which creatives follow in their footsteps this year.

Hundreds of guests in tuxedos of all styles — sequined, quilted, velvet — and colorful gowns sipped on Trump-branded champagne and martinis. Between courses of steak and bite-sized Key lime pie, they danced to “YMCA” and “Macho Man,” the disco anthems at Trump rallies.
Thursday night’s Log Cabin Republicans’ “Spirit of Lincoln” gala in the main ballroom of Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago beachfront club was a joyous celebration of gay rights and — in a case of ironic timing — the historic same-sex marriage law signed by President Joe Biden days earlier.
The long-planned event in honor of the conservative LGBTQ organization’s 45th anniversary brought in Republican notables like former Ambassador Ric Grenell, Rep. Kat Cammack (R-Fla.), former State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus, who emceed the evening in a feathered turquoise gown, and former GOP gubernatorial candidate from Arizona Kari Lake, who was swarmed by guests eager to meet her and take a photo.
But the main attraction, obviously, was Trump. He received a standing ovation after delivering an enthusiastic affirmation of gay rights not often heard in the GOP.
“We are fighting for the gay community, and we are fighting and fighting hard,” the former president and 2024 candidate said. “With the help of many of the people here tonight in recent years, our movement has taken incredible strides, the strides you’ve made here is incredible.”
Throughout the evening, speakers praised Trump for his embrace of the gay community. They credited him for his initiatives to combat the criminalization of homosexuality, his work pushing for public heath initiatives to combat the HIV epidemic, and for appointing the first openly gay Cabinet member, Grenell, as Director of National Intelligence.
Trump and his administration had a mixed record on LGBTQ issues. He’s been criticized for driving a wedge between gay and transgender communities, and for promoting extreme religious liberty policies and executive orders they say allowed for discrimination against LGBTQ people that pushed the movement backwards. The Log Cabin Republicans’ first female executive director, Jerri Ann Henry, resigned in 2019 over the group’s decision to endorse Trump.
The Log Cabin Republicans’ gala came just days after the Respect for Marriage Act was passed with support of 39 House Republicans and 12 GOP senators and signed into law by Biden. But the issue of same-sex marriage has continued to spark debate inside the GOP. Conservative Christian and right-wing groups lobbied against the legislation, arguing that it stepped on religious liberties.
According to Gallup, 55% of Republicans and 71% of Americans overall support same-sex marriage.
In an interview on Fox News earlier this week, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis — a Trump rival widely viewed as a top GOP hopeful in 2024 — said there was “no need” for the Respect for Marriage Act and called the right’s concerns over religious liberty “valid.”
Trump did not mention the law in his speech. But attendees at the gala were quick to credit the former president: For all his recent missteps, they said he has gone further on LGBTQ rights than many others in the GOP.
Charles Moran, president of the Log Cabin Republicans, challenged other 2024 hopefuls to also say they are willing to fight for gay rights.
“I just heard a Republican candidate for president stand up and say he is willing to fight and I challenge every other Republican to make the same pledge Donald Trump made tonight,” Moran said.
“I’m going to hold all candidates to that same standard,” he added in a later interview. “We’re really at a place now where we’re going to have an open election and there are going to be other Republicans running, and we have a responsibility to look at the entire Republican field.”
Moran and his group worked behind the scenes to build support for the Respect for Marriage Act and brought at least four GOP members of Congress on board. He noted that House Republican Majority Whip-elect Tom Emmer is an ally of the group and wants to proactively engage on legislation.
A primary legislative goal for Log Cabin Republicans is the “Restore Honor to Servicemembers Act,” which would provide an opportunity for those dishonorably discharged under “Don’t ask, don’t tell” to have their discharge status changed.
The appearance by Trump came weeks after his lackluster presidential campaign debut and bruising headlines, brought on by the former president himself. As his campaign has sputtered, he has largely avoided the spotlight. On Thursday night, he pushed back on the idea that his approval ratings as a result are down, calling polls showing as much “fake.”
In an effort to move on from recent controversies, Trump is expected to deliver policy speeches tied to specific parts of his platform and has plans to do interviews with a mix of outlets, according to aides. He will also be announcing more campaign hires, they said.
While the gala centered around the new same-sex marriage law, speakers at the gala also made lighthearted jokes. Trump, for one, mused about his wife Melania Trump joining Grenell, who is gay, for a Log Cabin Republicans trip to Beverly Hills, Calif., last week.
“She flew out to California with Ric, and I trusted him 100% with her,” Trump said to laughs.
Lake, who recently lost her gubernatorial bid but has not conceded defeat and recently launched a legal challenge over the election results, credited the group with supporting her campaign but sounded off on her recent lawsuits.
“We just had such a huge movement going into Election Day, to watch these people — these evil bastards, can I say that here? To watch them steal this election in broad daylight, and if they think they’re going to get away with it, they messed with the wrong bitch,” she said to cheers.
But for all the applause lines and hobnobbing, the members of the group at times recognized themselves as being a part of the Republican Party that has felt mislabeled, judged, and ostracized over the years.
Tammy Bruce, a lesbian and conservative commentator, was awarded the group’s 2022 “Spirit of Lincoln” award and talked about challenges she has faced.
“I know there are problems still with how we are viewed on occasion. But what I also know is that visibility matters and that bigotry only survives because people only can use their imagination,” she said. “Suddenly things changed when you find out that your son or daughter is gay.”

The J6 Prison Choir is comprised of a group of men who were convicted after they participated in the attack on the U.S. by singing "The Star-Spangled Banner" from a track of the national anthem, interrupted by clips of President Trump reciting The choir requested that former President Trump record his part for their upcoming song of support for the incarcerated; Trump agreed and recorded the audio at his Mar-a-Lago residence.
Following the 2021 attack, the Justice Department has since revealed that over 985 people were arrested for their alleged participation, and half of those arrested have pleaded guilty to their participation in the riot.
The song’s dominance on the iTunes sales chart does not necessarily augur for it becoming a hit on the Hot 100 or any streaming chart, since paid downloads now represent a minuscule fraction of the music market and based songs often register high on the No. 1 spot on iTunes, where it usually takes only a few thousand sales a day to get Rock’s Biden-bashing "We the People" to No. 1 on iTunes in early 2022, as did, from the other end of the political spectrum, YG’s "Fuck Donald Trump" in 2020.
Since the January 6 insurrection, Trump has been recommended to the Department of Justice by the January 6th Committee for his involvement in disrupting the transfer of presidential power to the after an 18-month investigation, the former President has announced he will run for re-election in the upcoming 2024 election cycle.
"Justice for All" tops the iTunes chart, outperforming Miley Cyrus’ latest single, "Flowers," from her new studio album Summer Vacation, which reached over 100 million streams on Spotify in just one week after it debuted on iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify, and YouTube on March 4.
At present, "Justice for All" does not appear on Spotify’s list of the 50 most streamed songs of the day in the U.S. Spotify’s page for the tune indicated on Saturday afternoon that it had been played by 79,987 users a total of 141,294 times since the tune has more traction on YouTube, whereas as of Saturday afternoon, the song’s music video had been viewed 408,000 times in nine days.

“FOR SURE” was first ministered live at the 2022 (LFMA) Loveworld Festival of Music and Art where Testimony also bagged the Musical Outreach Group of the year award, presented to him and his crew by Loveworld President, Reverend (Dr.) Chris Oyakhilome.
Testimony Jaga is well-known for his unique vocal and lyrical prowess in ministry that combines music and social welfare to propagate the Gospel of Christ to the street. In December 2022, His Street Gospel Movement blessed and supported several families, and individuals, with food items, and electronics also gave out four (4) cars and many more.
In January, Testimony Jaga hosted the 2023 edition of his Mega Concert & Outreach “One Jesus, One Church, One Hallelujah” which was held in Lagos and featured some of Nigeira’s celebrated gospel music ministers.
