Molly Sprayregen at LGBTQ Nation:
A prominent anti-LGBTQ+ activist has slammed Donald Trump for “pro-homosexual policies” ahead of an upcoming Log Cabin Republicans (LCR) event at Mar-A-Lago at which Melania Trump is a guest of honor.
Trump, it should be noted, is arguably the most anti-LGBTQ+ president of all time. A 2021 study found that LGBTQ+ people experienced a greater increase in extreme mental distress during the Trump presidency than non-LGBTQ+ people as a result of his anti-LGBTQ+ policies. Past studies have found that suicide hotline calls to Trans Lifeline quadrupled after Trump’s attacks on transgender people, trans teen suicide attempts may have spiked because of his tweets, and areas that voted for Trump experienced increased reports of school bullying. Nevertheless, Peter LaBarbera — founder and president of the anti-LGBTQ+ organization Americans for Truth About Homosexuality — believes Trump isn’t extreme enough in his anti-LGBTQ+ views and actions. LaBarbera claimed that Melania’s role at the LCR fundraiser indicates Trump is “escalating his pro-homosexual policies in advance of a possible second term.” “Far from Making America Great Again, Trump is contributing to our nation’s moral and spiritual decline,” LaBarbera said, adding that Trump should “read the Bible rather than merely sell it.”
[...] Melania will indeed be the guest of honor at an April 20 Log Cabin Republicans event at Mar-a-Lago. But according to LGBTQ Nation columnist John Gallagher, the former First Lady’s role in the event by the conservative LGBTQ+ group is a symbol of the group’s waning relevancy. “Now, in the age of Trump, LCR is little more than window dressing, an opportunity for members to content themselves in the belief that they really are part of the MAGA universe,” Gallagher wrote. “But by and large, the new LCR holds LGBTQ+ people in the same contempt that the Trump universe does. For proof, look no further than the ‘ambassador’ LCR hired last year: Isabella Riley Moody. She has openly wished for a more homophobic society, has called gay people ‘groomers,’ and said ‘Heil Hitler’ after interviewing an antisemite.”
Donald Trump was the most anti-LGBTQ+ "President" in American history, but even that isn't good enough for rabid homophobe Peter LaBarbera, as he criticized Trump due to his wife Melania being honored at an event by the Log Cabin Republicans at Mar-A-Lago.

Ron DeSantis is not hiding the fact that he is an unambiguous Nazi.
His feverishly homophobic campaign is bizarrely trying to paint Donald Trump as too moderate for the GOP. Imagine a Nazi primary in late Weimar Germany — that's where the Republicans are in this cycle.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg pushed back on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) on Sunday for a video his campaign posted last week seemingly attacking former President Donald Trump for past remarks he’s made in support of  the LGBTQ+ community. The video shared on Twitter by the DeSantis War Room — the account Florida governor’s campaign uses to rile up right-wing, MAGA fans on Twitter — accuses Trump of being too sympathetic toward transgender rights while promoting the anti-LGBTQ+ laws, like the notorious “Don’t Say Gay” bill, DeSantis passed in Florida during his time as governor. The one minute and 13 second video starts off with a clip of Trump giving a speech at the 2016 Republican convention, saying, “I will do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens.” That comes alongside a montage of photos, screenshots of headlines and tweets and two Trump clips where he seemingly shows support for the LGBTQ+ community. About 25 seconds in, the video takes a bizarre turn. As the background music changes we start seeing a montage of photos and videos of Desantis alongside images of shirtless men with six packs and scenes from several movies with over-the-top masculine male characters, including the 2004 movie “Troy” featuring Brad Pitt as Achilles, one of the greatest warriors in all of Greek mythology.
Talk of DeSantis being a "smart Trump" or a "sane Trump" is absurd. DeSantis would be just as bad as Trump but with a different style.
BTW, one group I'll never understand is the Log Cabin Republicans. They are the living embodiment of the expression "self-hating".
Meanwhile, the Log Cabin Republicans — a group that represents LGBTQ conservatives and allies — described the video as venturing “into homophobic territory,” adding that DeSantis’ “policy positions are dangerous and politically stupid.”
What is truly "politically stupid" is sticking with a party which hates you and serially demonizes you.
A TV station in Jacksonville, DeSantis's birthplace, aired this report on Racist Ron's latest public outburst of homophobia.

Hundreds of guests in tuxedos of all styles — sequined, quilted, velvet — and colorful gowns sipped on Trump-branded champagne and martinis. Between courses of steak and bite-sized Key lime pie, they danced to “YMCA” and “Macho Man,” the disco anthems at Trump rallies.
Thursday night’s Log Cabin Republicans’ “Spirit of Lincoln” gala in the main ballroom of Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago beachfront club was a joyous celebration of gay rights and — in a case of ironic timing — the historic same-sex marriage law signed by President Joe Biden days earlier.
The long-planned event in honor of the conservative LGBTQ organization’s 45th anniversary brought in Republican notables like former Ambassador Ric Grenell, Rep. Kat Cammack (R-Fla.), former State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus, who emceed the evening in a feathered turquoise gown, and former GOP gubernatorial candidate from Arizona Kari Lake, who was swarmed by guests eager to meet her and take a photo.
But the main attraction, obviously, was Trump. He received a standing ovation after delivering an enthusiastic affirmation of gay rights not often heard in the GOP.
“We are fighting for the gay community, and we are fighting and fighting hard,” the former president and 2024 candidate said. “With the help of many of the people here tonight in recent years, our movement has taken incredible strides, the strides you’ve made here is incredible.”
Throughout the evening, speakers praised Trump for his embrace of the gay community. They credited him for his initiatives to combat the criminalization of homosexuality, his work pushing for public heath initiatives to combat the HIV epidemic, and for appointing the first openly gay Cabinet member, Grenell, as Director of National Intelligence.
Trump and his administration had a mixed record on LGBTQ issues. He’s been criticized for driving a wedge between gay and transgender communities, and for promoting extreme religious liberty policies and executive orders they say allowed for discrimination against LGBTQ people that pushed the movement backwards. The Log Cabin Republicans’ first female executive director, Jerri Ann Henry, resigned in 2019 over the group’s decision to endorse Trump.
The Log Cabin Republicans’ gala came just days after the Respect for Marriage Act was passed with support of 39 House Republicans and 12 GOP senators and signed into law by Biden. But the issue of same-sex marriage has continued to spark debate inside the GOP. Conservative Christian and right-wing groups lobbied against the legislation, arguing that it stepped on religious liberties.
According to Gallup, 55% of Republicans and 71% of Americans overall support same-sex marriage.
In an interview on Fox News earlier this week, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis — a Trump rival widely viewed as a top GOP hopeful in 2024 — said there was “no need” for the Respect for Marriage Act and called the right’s concerns over religious liberty “valid.”
Trump did not mention the law in his speech. But attendees at the gala were quick to credit the former president: For all his recent missteps, they said he has gone further on LGBTQ rights than many others in the GOP.
Charles Moran, president of the Log Cabin Republicans, challenged other 2024 hopefuls to also say they are willing to fight for gay rights.
“I just heard a Republican candidate for president stand up and say he is willing to fight and I challenge every other Republican to make the same pledge Donald Trump made tonight,” Moran said.
“I’m going to hold all candidates to that same standard,” he added in a later interview. “We’re really at a place now where we’re going to have an open election and there are going to be other Republicans running, and we have a responsibility to look at the entire Republican field.”
Moran and his group worked behind the scenes to build support for the Respect for Marriage Act and brought at least four GOP members of Congress on board. He noted that House Republican Majority Whip-elect Tom Emmer is an ally of the group and wants to proactively engage on legislation.
A primary legislative goal for Log Cabin Republicans is the “Restore Honor to Servicemembers Act,” which would provide an opportunity for those dishonorably discharged under “Don’t ask, don’t tell” to have their discharge status changed.
The appearance by Trump came weeks after his lackluster presidential campaign debut and bruising headlines, brought on by the former president himself. As his campaign has sputtered, he has largely avoided the spotlight. On Thursday night, he pushed back on the idea that his approval ratings as a result are down, calling polls showing as much “fake.”
In an effort to move on from recent controversies, Trump is expected to deliver policy speeches tied to specific parts of his platform and has plans to do interviews with a mix of outlets, according to aides. He will also be announcing more campaign hires, they said.
While the gala centered around the new same-sex marriage law, speakers at the gala also made lighthearted jokes. Trump, for one, mused about his wife Melania Trump joining Grenell, who is gay, for a Log Cabin Republicans trip to Beverly Hills, Calif., last week.
“She flew out to California with Ric, and I trusted him 100% with her,” Trump said to laughs.
Lake, who recently lost her gubernatorial bid but has not conceded defeat and recently launched a legal challenge over the election results, credited the group with supporting her campaign but sounded off on her recent lawsuits.
“We just had such a huge movement going into Election Day, to watch these people — these evil bastards, can I say that here? To watch them steal this election in broad daylight, and if they think they’re going to get away with it, they messed with the wrong bitch,” she said to cheers.
But for all the applause lines and hobnobbing, the members of the group at times recognized themselves as being a part of the Republican Party that has felt mislabeled, judged, and ostracized over the years.
Tammy Bruce, a lesbian and conservative commentator, was awarded the group’s 2022 “Spirit of Lincoln” award and talked about challenges she has faced.
“I know there are problems still with how we are viewed on occasion. But what I also know is that visibility matters and that bigotry only survives because people only can use their imagination,” she said. “Suddenly things changed when you find out that your son or daughter is gay.”

It's so cute when the Log Cabin Republicans come out with some new position on the various anti-LGBTQ bills plaguing state legislatures.
"We supported Don't Say Gay, but we're going to oppose some of these other bills..." Awwww, and I'm sure your opinion is going to carry very far! I'm sure every Republican in the country is hanging on the edge of their seat to hear what you're going to say.
We'll never know who loves the Log Cabin Republicans more: left-wing queers or other Republicans. But there's a lot of love for them to go around. Best of luck to them in their efforts to continue their storied career.

in 2012 and the first quarter of 2013 I was part of a movement within my county to shift the republican party closer to the center from within. I left the party after the first quarter meeting because of how one member of log cabin republicans was treated by the vacancy committee:
when I talked to the men at the log cabin republicans booth at Pride, I mentioned this incident. the men said, "Oh, Chris Busby" fondly. I asked if he was there and they said no.
well, it turns out chris left the republican party in 2016.

Republicans have essentially declared war on the LGBTQ community. In red states their homophobic histrionics and anti-gay/anti-trans laws have encouraged an atmosphere of violence against LGBTQ people.
Because of Republican efforts to fire up their rabidly homophobic base prior to the 2022 election, no anti-LGBTQ conspiracy theory is considered too bizarre or outlandish to be circulated by extremist Trump Republicans.
25 percent of Republicans identify as believers of the Pizzagate successor QAnon, and the far right’s capacity for street violence has grown. At the same time, where once most elected Republican officials would at least nominally distance themselves from Pizzagate-pushers out on the fringe, that wall has largely eroded. Across the country, GOP lawmakers have waged a legislative crusade targeting queer and trans kids, smearing opponents as “groomers,” language that rhymes with the “pedophile” claims that inspired the attack on Comet Ping Pong. And where once the targets of these conspiracy theories were largely confined to a select group of Democratic lawmakers and their allies, the fearmongering—amplified by Fox News and prominent conservative social media accounts—is now targeted at all LGBTQ people, from national figures to members of your local community. The stage is set for a Pizzagate in any city.
Republican extremists at Fox News and in state governments have set the tone for this atmosphere. Anybody who opposes them is automatically labelled as a “groomer” and is implicitly deemed worthy of violence.
What we are already seeing this Pride season is alarming, but it did not come out of nowhere. It is a continuation of campaigns targeting drag queen story hours. It is fed by Republican attacks on queer and trans kids in state legislatures across the country. And it is coordinated, by people on the far right who have names and specific movement affiliations. As these threats continue, as they generate yet more videos of confrontations, they also may give heft to the lie that supporting LGBTQ youth is grooming and that queer community spaces are commercial settings for child abuse. No Republican would say, the Pizzagate shooter had a point. But now, based simply on videos of deliberate confrontations with kids at Pride events, they are happy to co-sign.
One group I’ll never understand is the self-hating Log Cabin Republicans.

Old-school homophobia is back Why anti-LGBTQ laws and accusations of “grooming” children seem to be everywhere now.
If you are LGBTQ, the only use Republicans have for you is as a target. In the long term, voting Democratic is the only defense against official homophobia from people like Ron DeSantis, Greg Abbott, and Josh Hawley.
Don’t fool yourself into thinking this will all go away all by itself. Without a strong rejection of Republican candidates this November, we’ll just get even more of the same hate-mongering from the GOP.

Michelangelo Signorile at The Signorile Report:
Melania Trump held a fundraiser for her husband’s campaign—billed as her first foray into the 2024 race—with the gay Republican group, the Log Cabin Republicans, last Saturday night at Mar-a-Lago. But you wouldn’t know much about it from media coverage, as the puny gathering, which only attracted 60 people, was shrouded in semi-secrecy, with few details revealed both before and after the event. It was billed by Log Cabin as an “LGBT” fundraiser for Trump’s campaign, but I’m loathe to use the “T” in discussing this since Log Cabin has completely thrown transgender people under the bus, supporting heinous anti-trans laws in the states.
There’s nothing the group is even remotely doing to help transgender people—nor gay, lesbian, or bisexual people, for that matter, supporting a candidate who was the most anti-LGBTQ president in history and even recently backing “don’t say gay” laws. And Trump’s plans, through his embrace of Project 2025, make clear how devastating another Trump presidency would be for LGBTQ people and for transgender people in particular. But perhaps because Caitlyn Jenner attended the Mar-a-Lago fundraiser, Log Cabin thought they could get some cover in calling it an “LGBT” fundraiser, even though the privileged Hollywood celebrity has become a reliable Fox go-to guest to bash other trans people.
Before the event, promoted by Log Cabin as the kickoff of their “Road to Victory” tour, few in the media were able to get anyone on the record from Trumpworld to talk about it, resorting to quoting “sources” discussing the details and describing Trump’s former ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell—the gay, far-right figure who cozied up to right-wing extremist leaders in Europe and helped elect George Santos—as organizing the event with Melania.
[...] In other words, this was another completely closeted gay event in which the words “gay” or “LGBT” or “rights” weren’t mentioned.
The anti-LGBTQ evangelical right has gotten used to swallowing closeted gay events by Republicans, taking them as relatively harmless as long as nothing overt is said that actually supports LGBTQ rights. They understand that these PR stunts are necessary to reach out to suburban voters and make Trump seem more moderate, just as he recently tried to appear to be more moderate—and failed miserably—on the issue of abortion, saying it should “go back to the states.” [...] That told us everything about who this event was staged for. It and any further events like it will be enormously ineffective, however, because Trump is a known quantity. He has embraced his own actions as president, which stripped LGBTQ people of their rights. His four-year record on LGBTQ rights, documented many times in the media, stands on its own—as do the plans he and his allies have laid out on LGBTQ rights for another term.
This past Saturday, former FLOTUS Melania Trump hosted a fundraiser for quisling group Log Cabin Republicans, a group that purports to support LGBTQ+ rights within the Republican Party but is opposed to transgender rights and increasingly LGBTQ+ rights.

Melania Trump has been largely absent from the Trump campaign trail so far. Now, she’s finally hosting a fundraiser: for LGBTQ+ group the Log Cabin Republicans. A few news sources have previously implied that she doesn’t want to devote any energy into helping Donald Trump to get re-elected president, with CNN quoting a source as saying: “It is her decision on how much or how little she will be campaigning.” Several articles have been written asking “where is Melania?” with the answer seemingly being: “avoiding her husband at all costs.” Even when the event is Trump’s Super Tuesday victory party at Mar-a-Lago: her home. However, it seems that one cause has finally lured her out of hiding. Politico reports that Melania is planning to host a fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago this month to raise money for the Log Cabin Republicans: described as “the nation’s largest Republican organization dedicated to representing LGBT conservatives and allies.” Her decision to host the fundraiser closely follows her husband’s latest furious rant about trans rights: notably, the fact that Transgender Day of Visibility shared a date with with Easter this year. Donald Trump has also vowed to cut federal funding for schools that promote what he calls “transgender insanity” if he’s re-elected.

So ... this piece is instructive in both good and bad ways.
First, we should all be more like San Antonio.
Second, gay Republicans are taking up the malformed "drag queens as groomers" argument. This is bad. It is disastrously researched, and makes them look stupid -- all of which allows them to move between Rabid Right and LGBTQIA circles.
Stay safe, San Antonio. We ♥️🧡💛💚💙💜 you.
