I’m rewatching Mad Men and every time I see the character of Lane Pryce on screen, my brain instantly churns up this specific limerick from The Crown, that the character of King George VI loved (both roles were played by Jared Harris).
“There once was a young lady named Sally,
Who enjoyed the occasional dally.
She sat on the lap,
Of a well-endowed chap,
And cried: "Sir, you're right up my alley!"”
I constantly end up laughing whenever I see him, as all my brain is doing, is repeating this (I’m very immature!). 😂🤦‍♀️
Also an added limerick in this vid. 💙👑

Annie - Pete Townshend & Ronnie Lane (1977)
"Annie" was released in September 1977 on the collaborative album Rough Mix, by The Who's guitarist Pete Townshend and former Small Faces and Faces bassist Ronnie Lane. This is just a seriously beautiful song. It features clips from Terence Davies' 2008 "Of Time and the City"....one of the most beautiful (and depressing) documentary films I've ever seen. (If you find the footage as compelling as I do, you might enjoy the video I made for The Waterboys' "Old England" https://youtu.be/j7_3bIM_K94 )
from the album "Rough Mix" by Ronnie Lane and Pete Townshend of The Who . Released in 1977

"Rough Mix was a great album,Pete and Ronnie created something very special."
"The unsung hero of both the Small Faces and the Faces. Rod Stewart said Plonk was "The heart and soul of the band".
"Written by Plonk, Kate Lambert (his, Ronnie's, wife at the time), and Eric Clapton."

Old oaks stand tall, Annie (they've) Seen the world grow small, Annie But when they fall, Annie, where will we be? Winter has come, Annie No strength in the sun, Annie And when it's gone, Annie Where shall we be? When all those colors have faded When ol' Jack comes to call Don't tell them no, tell them maybe Oh now, Annie, may God bless us all Oh yeah, Annie, God bless us all Hear the children they call, Annie? Every leaf must fall, Annie God bless us all, Annie Wherever we'll be.

"This song was wrote for my Great Grandmother Annie Price who used to live next door to Ronnie. She lived in a little house across the field from Fishpool farm and used to babysit for Ronnie and Kate. Whenever Eric Clapton was in the area he used to call on her with, he spoke about her in Ronnies Documentary THE PASSING SHOW She moved to Llanidloes to be nearer my Grandmother and died around the mid 1980's."

Friends, I have failed you all. I've seen a lot of posts over the last week with a lot of great biographical detail about many of the flyers and aircrew who've been name-dropped so far in Masters of the Air - and I haven't seen a single thing about the one name that is directly in the center of this blog's lane.
In Part 2, returning from their mission to Trondheim, Cleven and Egan walk into the Interrogation hut and Egan accepts a cup of coffee from a woman he thanks as Tatty. Later on, at the dance, James Douglass remarks that he will be 'coming in hot' on one of the American Red Cross women on the other side of the room, and one of his friends asks "General Spaatz's daughter? Or the other one?"
Katherine "Tatty" Spaatz was a member of the American Red Cross Clubmobile service and the daughter of General Carl "Tooey" Spaatz, who commanded the Eighth Air Force on its move to England. (General Spaatz later moved to overall command of the entire Army Air Forces in the Europe Theatre of Operations, or ETO. He is, as the kids say, rather important.)
But we're not talking about him here. We're talking about her.
Tumblr media
Katherine was 22 years old when she arrived in Europe with the Red Cross. (One of her traveling companions that trip was Kathleen Kennedy, daughter of former U.S. Ambassador Joseph P Kennedy Sr., also coming to serve overseas with the ARC.)
The American Red Cross's mission in Europe had many facets during the Second World War - in addition to activities we might think of today, like collecting blood, providing disaster relief at home and running first aid seminars, they were responsible for collecting and distributing packages for Prisoners of War.
They also operated large canteens like the Rainbow Corner club, a recreational facility in London where soldiers on leave could get a room for the weekend, a bite to eat, and a number of other amenities. Smaller clubs called Donut Dugouts provided a space where a serviceman could always be assured of a cup of hot coffee, a donut, and a pretty girl to talk to, specially recruited for being friendly, fair, approachable, and specially trained to be the girl next door overseas. In addition to these more permanent installations, they also operated the Clubmobile service, a mobile version of their popular Dugouts that moved operations into retooled Green Line Bus Company buses to take donuts and a taste of home to the front line.
Tatty, as she was called, worked on the Clubmobile "North Dakota" along with Julia "Dooley" Townsend, Virginia "Ginny" Sherwood, and Dorothy "Mike" Myrick. Life Magazine did a full article on their clubmobile in February of 1943, which you can read online at the link. There is another lovely blog post with pictures here. She also worked for a time in a more permanent post at the USAAF base at Snetterton Heath, and was later sent to France. You can read a little bit more about her and see more pictures at her bio page at the American Air Museum in Britain website.
If you'd like more information about Tatty, Helen, and women like them, as well as the Clubmobile service, consider reading the following:
Slinging Doughnuts for the Boys by James H. Madison Battlestars & Doughnuts: World War II Clubmobile Experiences of Mary Metcalfe Rexford War through the Hole of a Donut, by Angela Petesch Goodnight, Irene (fiction) - Although this is a novel, it is based on Luis Alberto Urrea's mother's time as a Clubmobile worker and her personal papers.

Danica McKellar (A Royal Date for Christmas, Swing Into Romance) and Oliver Rice (Firefly Lane, Magic In Mistletoe) have booked their next flick for Great American Family. The duo will star in A Royal Christmas Ball, with waltzes choreographed by Dancing With the Stars pro Gleb Savchenko.
Production begins this week on the movie that will premiere this November as part of Great American Christmas 2024.
In A Royal Christmas Ball, Chelsea Jones (McKellar) is a dance instructor and studio owner in Chicago who inspires kids to find themselves through dance. Just before Christmas, Chelsea discovers a photo she’s never seen before. Chelsea thinks the young woman is her birth mother who passed away when she was only five years old. The woman is in a wedding dress tugging on the hand of a man wearing a wedding ring, but that is all that can be seen of the man Chelsea believes may be her father.
The photo’s handwritten inscription reads, “Our place, Havenshire, December 23, 1984.” With only the internet, a plane ticket, and lifelong determination to go on, Chelsea now has four days in Havenshire to solve the mystery of her birth family. Along the way, she’ll have to sneak into a castle, teach a stubborn Prince how to dance, and be in just the right place on Christmas Eve when the bells toll.
“Royal movies are among our viewers’ favorites,” said Bill Abbott, President & CEO, Great American Media. “Finding love when and where you least expect it is the heart of royal fan fiction and Danica and Oliver do a brilliant job of making heartfelt wishes come true.”
“Oliver Rice exudes a dashing Cary Elwes-vibe,” added McKellar. “Oliver grew up in London and graduated from Oxford School of Drama and brings genuine nobility to the role of Prince Phillip. I cannot wait for fans to see him in the film.”
A Royal Christmas Ball is executive produced by Brad Krevoy, Amy Krell, Vince Balzano, McKellar, Jimmy Townsend, Susie Belzberg Krevoy, and Don McBrearty. Producer is David Anselmo. Supervising producers are Kelly Martin, Michael Shepard, Michael Beard, and James Mou.
A Royal Christmas Ball is written by Marcy Holland. Story is from McKellar and Marcy Holland.

So now that I've finally watched The Blacklist series finale ...
... I thought I'd share my Top 15 favorite episodes out of all 10 seasons it was on the air.
What? I fangirl hard. I won't apologize for that. 😏
Don't worry. I didn't just remember all of these episodes off the top of my head. I basically did a series 3-9 rewatch last fall before the final 10th season started. Then, I did a rewatch of the first 2 seasons while the 10th season ran because I couldn't remember some of those details they kept referencing.
Tumblr media
Enough dilly dallying. Let's dive in, shall we?
Btw, these are in chronological order, and I've pinched the brief descriptions of each episode from IMDB.com:
Luther Braxton (s2, e9)
The task force tries to save Red when he's arrested and taken to a secret detention facility. At the facility, Red tangles with a thief with whom he shared a complicated history. Guest star: Ron Perlman as Luther Braxton
T. Earl King VI (s2, e14)
A former paramour involves Reddington in a deadly game with a wealthy and powerful family dynasty whose ill-begotten fortune was amassed from an underground auction of human and material contraband. Meanwhile, Tom takes on a new mission.
Marvin Gerard (s3, e2)
As Liz pleads for her safety in the Russian Embassy, Red discovers a new plan devised by the Cabal to kill her. A familiar face reaches out to Ressler. Guest star: Fisher Stevens as Marvin Gerard
Kings of the Highway (s3, e8)
Red and Liz are separated when Red falls into a perilous situation. Elsewhere, Samar makes a risky choice to help Liz, and Tom and Cooper continue their quest to exonerate Liz.
Mr. Gregory Devry (s3, e11)
With her name finally cleared, Liz attempts to reclaim her former life. Red works with the task force to infiltrate an assembly of high-level criminals at large in a rare, risky opportunity to capture the heads of the world's most lethal organized crime syndicates. Guest star: Jake Weber as Gregory Devry
The Apothecary (s4, e15)
Red has to figure out who betrayed him when he's poisoned; Liz and the task force look for the toxin's designer to save Red's life. Note: Even though season 4 had my favorite "Big Bad" of the entire series, I could only choose one episode from this season to include in my top 15.
Abraham Stern (s5, e11)
Red goes on the hunt for a legendary treasure; Liz studies the methods of one of the Blacklist's most dangerous criminals. Guest star: Nathan Lane as Abraham Stern
The Osterman Umbrella Company (s6, e14)
Red directs Liz to investigate a secret organization of assassins hired by global intelligence agencies to eliminate former agents, a case with ramifications that will change the task force forever. Note: This episode is probably the one that broke my heart the most. If you've seen it, then you'll know why.
Cornelius Ruck (s7, e12)
Secluded on a private island, Red reunites with an old flame and a ring of thieves in a plot to make millions off of stolen art. Plans are quickly derailed, however, when guests on the island mysteriously show up dead. Guest star: Joely Richardson as Cassandra Bianchi Note: I really liked this one as a nice one-off from the usual formula the show followed.
The Wellstone Agency (s8, e6)
Red and Dembe go to great lengths to fulfill the final wishes of a dear friend; Aram goes undercover as an interpreter to a company that provides services to criminals; Park helps a friend in trouble. Note: The sweetest goodbye I've ever seen a TV series give to a recurring character since The Big Bang Theory.
Anne (s8, e13)
Red enjoys a quiet visit with a friend at her home in rural America. Note: Another great one-off with an ending that made me hate Liz even more than I already did.
Ivan Stepanov (s8, e17)
Red tries desperately to rescue an old friend at all costs, while Liz and Townsend conduct an interrogation. Guest stars: David E. Harrison as Ivan Stepanov and Rana Roy as Priya Laghari
The SPK (s9, e3)
A new case involving stolen artifacts reunites Red with a former Blacklister. Aram faces a difficult decision. Guest star: Stacy Keach as Robert Vesco
Eva Mason (s9, e14)
While searching for Senator Panabaker's missing daughter-in-law, the task force learns there may be a larger pattern of abductions. Red continues to piece together the mystery behind Liz's death. Guest star: Lea DeLaria as Nurse Binstock
The Four Guns (s10, e3)
An assassination attempt on Sen. Panabaker leads the Task Force to a group of renowned pickpockets; Red sends a dangerous gift to an old friend in custody. Guest stars: Stacy Keach as Robert Vesco and Jacob Pitts as Quentin Dodd Note: The scene between Reddington and Quentin where the latter "reads" the former on command and almost perfectly characterizes him is one of my favorite scenes of the entire 10th season.
And that's it folks! I've liked a lot of episodes over the show's run, even when Liz made me want to pull my hair out or when the writing was not as strong as I hoped.
But these 15 episodes above are probably the ones I would recommend to someone who has never seen the show, but wants to know what I liked about it so much that made me stick with it until the end.
As I mentioned before, season 4 had my favorite major villain (aka "Big Bad") but I only picked one episode from that season to add to this list. And although I think season 8 was the most infuriating in terms of characterization, it actually had a lot of great episodes that I would watch over and over again.
I think it's interesting that I didn't have any episodes from season 1 on my list. 🤔
I'm not going to review the series finale or the show overall. I just wanted to mark the occasion and say that I'm happy to see the show sunset, and I will be forever grateful that it gave us 10 years of James Spader on my television.
Yes, I hated that they didn't answer any of my questions about who Red really was to Liz, but I'm still feeling very, very grateful because this character was one for the ages.

Quilcene Loop
26 June 2023
Tumblr media
I’ve had ideas for rides in this corner of the Olympics for a long time, but it took a recent piece by Jan Heine on the Rene Herse Blog to spur my interest enough to get me out here. I picked up coffee, caught the ferry in Edmonds, and was pedaling from the Quilcene Ranger Station by 9:00. Despite what I was afraid might be a very long, grueling day of climbing, I was back to the car by 2:30. The total ascent was more than 5600’, but while the climbing was certainly hard, it was never painfully so. On the other hand, I was very happy to reach the final summit.
I rode the loop counterclockwise, which meant that the elevation ratcheted upwards in several separate climbs over more than 30 miles before the much quicker drop back to sea level at the end. The route crosses Bon Jon Pass at Mile 25, but the high point (3500’) comes later at Mile 32. All of the climbing was on gravel, while much of the descent was on pavement, which was my main rationale for doing the loop in this direction.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The downhill at the end was great, although it would have been greater had there not been an uphill segment half way down. Much of the descent is on a single-lane paved road (generally good surface, but with some big divots that require some caution), although there was an annoying section of fresh gravel near the bottom (which masked, but didn’t eliminate some nasty washboard). The final couple of miles are back on a regular two-lane road. This side would make a great climb if you simply wanted a stiff 1000+meter ascent without the longer loop (but that short gravel section would be tough on a road bike).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I saw almost no cars the entire ride. There were a few in the first and the last few miles, but that was about it, other than a few parked cars at trailheads. I stopped and chatted with one guy on an ATV who was hopelessly turned around - but I think I got him headed back in the right direction. It’s pretty easy to get lost back here. The roads aren’t marked well, the terrain is confusing, the trees are thick, and in the morning, clouds still obscured the sun. I was certainly grateful for having my route loaded on my GPS (I use RWGPS and a Wahoo Bolt) and for Gaia GPS which I use for offline maps on my phone (I also use a Garmin Messenger for tracking when I’m away from cell coverage).
The entire ride is in the trees, except for a few clear cuts and a couple borrow pits. I got a few glimpses of the surrounding hills and cliffs, occasional glimpses of Mount Townsend (the trailhead for which is near the high point of this route) and one view of Mount Constance(?) (with a large Texas camper van parked strategically in front), but it’s mainly just a lot of trees. Above 3000’, the rhododendrons start showing up in the understory.
The last time (the only other time) I was up here was in 2016 when I hiked up Mount Townsend (hshipman: Mount Townsend).

Should be credited to Ronnie Lane and not Pete Townsend. It’s from a collaborative album they did.

50 Years of Island Books: Erica Bauermeister
Tumblr media
Erica Bauermeister lives in Port Townsend, Washington, with her husband and 238 wild deer. She's the New York Times bestselling author of many books, including The Scent Keeper, The School of Essential Ingredients, House Lessons: Renovating a Life, Let’s Hear It for the Girls, and her latest, No Two Persons. We've taken great pleasure in watching our community gather to celebrate her books. Lori Robinson welcomed Erica to the blog last May to launch No Two Persons, and today I'm bringing her back to contribute to our walk down Island Books memory lane.
Miriam: It's so nice to have you back here, Erica. Tell me, what are you thinking about when you walk into a bookstore?
Erica: I read once that almost 2,000 new books are published each Tuesday.  It boggles the mind, and it is what I think of each time I walk in a bookstore. I look at the selection of the books, especially the Staff Recommendations.  Are the books just the ones that everybody is talking about? Or can I sense an insightful reader’s mind behind the choices? When I encounter the latter, I know that I will also find the gems, the books I will open and realize that I need in my life, when a minute before I hadn’t even known they existed.
It takes an extraordinary amount of work to create a bookstore that feels as if it was made just for you. This is the special magic of Island Books. The tables at Island Books tempt me to read memoir, history, non-fiction, beach reads and mysteries. I find books in categories I might not otherwise, because I am tempted by  the obvious care in the selections. And I am grateful for the dedicated people who put these books in my life. To have an independent bookstore that is 50 years old and operates at such a high standard is amazing.
Tumblr media
Miriam: I feel the same way and will spend the rest of my life marveling at the collective energy of so many minds. I'm so glad you're one of those writers as well as readers! Now, you've done multiple events over the years with Island Books. We hosted you in 2011, 2020 on Zoom at the height of the pandemic, and only a few months ago in May 2023. Do you have any particular memories from those events that stand out in your mind?
Erica: I’ve enjoyed all my visits, but I think my favorite was the most recent. It was an absurdly hot day in May. I completely expected the event to be me and a single bookseller, just sitting there sweating together.  But the welcome was so enthusiastic, and the chairs were full and the air fans were going and you could feel the community in the room. These were booksellers who loved their jobs, and customers who loved books and their bookstore. Readers in the best sense of the word. And you know what struck me at the end? The sheer number of people who bought books and had them personalized to someone else—and the smiles on their faces as they said “it’s a gift."
Tumblr media
Miriam: I love that! In your opinion, what separates Island Books from the big bookstores and popular websites?
Erica: I love the serendipity of finding books that I didn’t know existed but which feel as if they were written just for me. Exploring the Staff Recommendations is one way, but my favorite is what I call The Bookseller Game. Rather than thinking about books in genres—literary, mystery, women’s fiction, dystopian, etc—you consider the feel of the books you most like to read. Are they plot or character driven? Do you gravitate toward long and luxurious sentences or short declarative ones? Is setting important? Do you like the puzzle of multiple narrators or the immediacy of a single, first-person narrator? Do you need a burning question at the center (who did it? why did this family fall apart? will the couple fall in love?) or do you relish just living in a different world for a while?
Then you bring your answers to an indie bookseller and see what they suggest.  For example, the first time I played, I said I was looking for a wicked-smart novel with beautifully written sentences and an unreliable narrator. The bookseller suggested Gone, Girl. I said I didn’t read thrillers (completely forgetting the point of the game). She said “oh, you will now.” She was right, and I read more widely now because of her.
I suppose it’s possible to play this game with an algorithm, but I find algorithms bland and predictable. They know only what you have read, not what you could. The surprises happen at the smaller stores where the booksellers know their inventory. And my favorite part is watching a bookseller's face light up and hearing their enthusiasm. At its core, reading is about human connection, and the booksellers at Island Books are really, really good at it.
Miriam: Thank you. We love the work we do. That look on anyone's face when they're excited about a book is my absolute favorite as well. Readers can never go wrong with Gone Girl. Erica, it's always great to connect with you and we're grateful for your support and love for Island Books over so many years. We love your work and sharing your books with customers.
To our Island Books community: In the next 50 Years of Island Books installment, I’ll be talking to author and store friend Kevin O’Brien. The author of 21 internationally-published thrillers, he won the Spotted Owl Award for Best Pacific Northwest Mystery and served on the board of Seattle 7 Writers. Kevin's latest nail-biter, The Enemy at Home, just hit shelves in August. Check it out in the meantime!
—Miriam

#cecilsaid
We made a plan to explore the Smoky Mountains National Park on our final full day in Gatlinburg. We had been told that Townsend was a good place to start as it embodies what Gatlinburg used to which is classic outdoors, tourist adventure. The drive to Townsend was lovely and the village itself fine. It is really spread along the highway and so difficult to get a feeling of community. Their motto is the Peaceful side of the Smoky Mountains and it certainly is that. There was a lovely and quaint white Baptist church surrounded by the purple blossomed plum trees, lots of coffee places and a beautiful general store complex that included a Smoky Mountain Outdoor Center (SMOC). We purchased some souvenirs for the kids before heading into the Park.
Tumblr media
The Park is beautiful. There are moss-covered stone retaining walls everywhere and stone tunnels that make it feel that you have entered a different world. The road snakes through the park following waterways that have carved spaces through and around the mountains. Spring is coming alive everywhere. We decided to explore the Cade’s Cove Loop as Cecil (Mom and Dad’s timeshare salesperson) let them know that it was quite beautiful. In fact #cecilsaid was our fun tagline for the trip through the Park as he had provided Mom and Dad lots of insider scoop about the Park. The Loop is an historic area that loops through a valley where at one point almost 800 settlers (156 families) had settled. The single-lane road was lined with traffic. LINED with traffic! 2 000 000 visitors travel the loop annually. It has been amazing to us the sheer volume of traffic everywhere here and the Park was the very same. We had a lovely autoroute tour book that explained each of the 18 sites on the loop which was very well done and a bargain at $1 from the visitors centre.
The park road brought us back to Gatlinburg around 3 pm. We were famished and decided upon Bennett’s Barbecue Restaurant thanks to a recommendation by our trolley driver the day before. We enjoyed a lunch of deep fried deviled eggs (yup!), pulled pork sandwiches, bbq chicken breasts and a meat platter (Poppa of course!). Julien had a delicious wood fired pizza that he gulped down. It was a great place to eat and we were hungry from our big day.
After lunch we hit up Hillbilly Golf in Gatlinburg. After loading into the tram that brought us up the hill, we played 18 of the most creative holes we have experienced in our mini-putt experience thus far, as we descended part way back down the mountain. What fun! Back to the car where Amma and Poppa had a wee rest, we headed to the Tanger Outlets for a bit of a shop while Julien and Syl tried out the indoor Crave Golf Course. Mom had a bit of a show-down with the clerk at the Cosmetic Store when she said she wouldn’t let mom go and get the store coupon. Guess who won? 😉
Dinner was at the Five Oaks Farm Kitchen across from the outlets. The building is gorgeous! A timber frame jewel created from Canadian oak. The dinner was good too - especially the banana pudding for dessert. 🍌
Home for our final night at the resort by 9:30. We were so tired after a long and full day of fun and adventure.
