Friends, I have failed you all. I've seen a lot of posts over the last week with a lot of great biographical detail about many of the flyers and aircrew who've been name-dropped so far in Masters of the Air - and I haven't seen a single thing about the one name that is directly in the center of this blog's lane.
In Part 2, returning from their mission to Trondheim, Cleven and Egan walk into the Interrogation hut and Egan accepts a cup of coffee from a woman he thanks as Tatty. Later on, at the dance, James Douglass remarks that he will be 'coming in hot' on one of the American Red Cross women on the other side of the room, and one of his friends asks "General Spaatz's daughter? Or the other one?"
Katherine "Tatty" Spaatz was a member of the American Red Cross Clubmobile service and the daughter of General Carl "Tooey" Spaatz, who commanded the Eighth Air Force on its move to England. (General Spaatz later moved to overall command of the entire Army Air Forces in the Europe Theatre of Operations, or ETO. He is, as the kids say, rather important.)
But we're not talking about him here. We're talking about her.
Tumblr media
Katherine was 22 years old when she arrived in Europe with the Red Cross. (One of her traveling companions that trip was Kathleen Kennedy, daughter of former U.S. Ambassador Joseph P Kennedy Sr., also coming to serve overseas with the ARC.)
The American Red Cross's mission in Europe had many facets during the Second World War - in addition to activities we might think of today, like collecting blood, providing disaster relief at home and running first aid seminars, they were responsible for collecting and distributing packages for Prisoners of War.
They also operated large canteens like the Rainbow Corner club, a recreational facility in London where soldiers on leave could get a room for the weekend, a bite to eat, and a number of other amenities. Smaller clubs called Donut Dugouts provided a space where a serviceman could always be assured of a cup of hot coffee, a donut, and a pretty girl to talk to, specially recruited for being friendly, fair, approachable, and specially trained to be the girl next door overseas. In addition to these more permanent installations, they also operated the Clubmobile service, a mobile version of their popular Dugouts that moved operations into retooled Green Line Bus Company buses to take donuts and a taste of home to the front line.
Tatty, as she was called, worked on the Clubmobile "North Dakota" along with Julia "Dooley" Townsend, Virginia "Ginny" Sherwood, and Dorothy "Mike" Myrick. Life Magazine did a full article on their clubmobile in February of 1943, which you can read online at the link. There is another lovely blog post with pictures here. She also worked for a time in a more permanent post at the USAAF base at Snetterton Heath, and was later sent to France. You can read a little bit more about her and see more pictures at her bio page at the American Air Museum in Britain website.
If you'd like more information about Tatty, Helen, and women like them, as well as the Clubmobile service, consider reading the following:
Slinging Doughnuts for the Boys by James H. Madison Battlestars & Doughnuts: World War II Clubmobile Experiences of Mary Metcalfe Rexford War through the Hole of a Donut, by Angela Petesch Goodnight, Irene (fiction) - Although this is a novel, it is based on Luis Alberto Urrea's mother's time as a Clubmobile worker and her personal papers.

And just like that, we are done with chapter two!
Also, happy to say that I have two more pages left until this comic is complete! Omg, I started this comic March of last year and it's finally close to being finished.
Ooh, I wonder what that strange shadow is. Looks very familiar. Oh, I wonder who it could be. lol
Either way, it doesn't look very good for Ace right now. lol
Stay safe and I'll see you next week for the start of chapter three!

ryu si-o is terrible at handling heartbreak: a headcannon
remember how the only type of love ryu si-o knows is the kind of love survival depends on? to feel needed. to need somebody, something.
now hear me out, because there's no way the drugs were ever actually going to kill her, especially with that time she got poisoned with tetrodotoxin? and it wore off in seconds? her metabolism is fast. the whole intention was to make her feel intense thirst, knowing she couldn't reach out for the water in front of her.
what if ryu si-o was putting her through the exact type of pain he went through after her betrayal?
with how he regards love, it would have felt like something vital for his survival was being snatched away. like the ground was falling out from beneath his feet.
and he needed her to know what it felt like. he needed her to know what she'd done to him.

cringe culture is dead, this is my Powerpuff Girls / Townsville OC
Gonna start posting my illustrated Gangreen Gang fic soon! And more doodles and little comics. But for now, have this wee bean.
Hazel is a Townsville teen who thinks of herself as a bad girl, but cries if she steps on a bug. She's a gentle soul with a crush on an awkward bad boy...
As a legally blind person myself, I wanted to make a self-indulgent OC who is also a blind little goth baby. Tried to replicate the PPG art style with questionable success, lol.

Hey tumblr fam!
On March 1st, the National World War Two Museum in New Orleans is doing a one-day conference on Women in World War Two in honor of Women's History Month. And as with most of their conferences, you can attend online for free!
They've got a really great lineup of speakers this year, and they're also going to be talking about their new exhibit, "Our War Too: Women in Service." I also happen to know that one of the women who consulted on Tyler Perry's upcoming film about the 6888th Postal Battalion is speaking!
This is a really big deal. I have several friends who are historians and museum professionals who've been to the NWWII, and they've said that while it is a beautiful museum, it is very much telling a white, male-centered story. The new exhibit they are opening is a first for them, and it needs to succeed in order for them to do more like it.
If you find yourself with some free time on March 1, please consider signing up and tuning in to the livestream. Attendance at programs like these, even digital attendance, helps show museum executives that people care about these topics and want to see more of them.

Finally, here is the cover! I can't believe that we're already here!
Unfortunately, I couldn't finish all of the pages like I wanted to, but I do only have nine pages left until the comic is complete. So I am pretty happy with what I have gotten done so far. You're still going to be getting about four or five pages a week depending on the chapter.
I'm also kind of sad that we're at the end now, I've started this project in late 2019 and started sharing it in 2020. It's crazy that we're already at the last book. Working on this series had meant a lot to me and I had loved sharing it with all of you.
Thank you all so much, stay safe and I'll see you on Sunday, March 3rd for the start of book 3!

Little art challenge I found on twitter, using only the printer Cartoon Network color palette.
I never really do lineless art, so I thought it would be fun to try it out with Ace. And it was!

mel c magdalene made me realize what was missing from my magdalene design and it's that she's not fucking jacked. it's crucial to her character
#🧅#literally my takeaway from jcs2012 was mary magdalene's arms. yeah those guys were there too i guess#i think hers might be my favorite portrayal of mary#like. not just because she's jacked i just really liked how jc2012 worked with magdalene#she felt more fleshed out. and i <3 yvonne elliman in this role i always will but lets be so for real in the 1973 movie mary was a sexy lam#character except instead of sexy she was like. sopping wet cat lamp character#i mean i think she was also sexy. but that's beside the point this post is not about how attractive i find yvonne elliman#or mel c#well it kind of is about how attractive i find mel c#whatever. my point is it was the 70s and she was a female character. so like. you get it !#and i feel like a lot of the time magdalene is very girlbossified in a way that makes her very one dimensional#without EVER her appearing masculine of course because god forbid the one female character does not appear to the male gaze#(well originally female character anyways. today genderbend casting is a thing and it fucks)#it's either she's a Girl Disciple (no further elaboration) or she's like. a girlboss stone hearted biker gang leader leather jacket queen#(no actual further elaboration but her one 'ooh i love this man and i dont know how to show it' solo tricks you into thinking there is)#while 2012 magdalene somehow seems much more well rounded to me.#they let her be herself more. idk. that's how i interpreted it at least. in my mind.#it's like. i feel many other marys i've seen are described by how they treat jesus (and sometimes judas)#but this one still feels present even when jesus is not around. or he is but she's not interacting with him.#again this is a very specific interpretation that clicked in my brain im not saying that jcs2012 like. did some groundbreaking feminist#portrayal of magdalene. but yknow !#she also didn't acknowledge judas' existence once while he had created some weird one sided beef with her which was. very funny to me#literally did not waste a glance at him.
