Reading about behavioral effects on fish from contaminants, listening to the rain outside, and i realized im really gonna miss my cozy little set up here when i go off to grad school in the fall

Thinking about starting a grad school blog once i start up, being from miami always sorrounded by a hispanic community, i am a bit anxious about living somewhere like Delaware, hopefully my time there can provide me with some knowledge i could give to up and starting Latinx marine biologists... stay tuned!!

Blog Post #5 - Tuesday, January 9th

Today I worked with Maria Candelaria(Candy) Lorens and she taught me how to do Western Blot. Candy is a visiting doctor from Argentina. She began to be interested in biology because she was always interested in the microscopic aspects of life and living things. You can use biology in almost every scientific area of study, and that drew her to it. She got her PhD. in chemical science at the National University of Cordova, and she plans on doing her post-doc in Cordova as well. During her PhD. she also studied breast cancer and signaling pathways. She also mentioned she did her PhD. in English because it’s the universal language of science, but it was still difficult adjusting to speaking English all the time here. This is her second time in the U.S. and she’ll only be here for three months on this visit. Her last visit was for 5 months at the University of Pennsylvania. At the lab here she’s studying the GPCR pathway which is a receptor of the Z protein. She’s very kind and there was a few times where she didn’t know how to say something in English so she told me in Spanish or she didn’t know what I was saying in English so I said it to her in Portuguese, and overall it was very good learning from her and learning about her educational history.
