I forgot how awful Liam is in Lioness Rampant. Like he is so utterly condescending to Alanna, and it makes me sick every time he uses a pet name. Can’t wait for him to be out of the picture

Jon, George, Liam
Fake Date: Jon
I think dating a prince sounds awful but fake dating one sounds fun! We’d be going out and having fun on his dime, and Jon is charming and enjoyable in small doses.
Slow Burn: George
I don’t know that I would want to go that slow with George, but I could never be his enemy, and I only want to real date him, not fake date 😂
Enemies to Lovers: Liam
I hate his personality so enemies on sight, but Alanna did say he was a fun hook up, so I guess I could see myself tempted to attempt being with him...at least for a very short time lmao

Thinking a lot about Liam Ironarm on this Lioness Rampant reread and I still don't really know what to make of him. On one hand, I do think it's a good depiction of like... a relationship where two people care about each other a lot but are just fundamentally incompatible romantically. But it does it in a way that doesn't actively villainize either party (though I do think Liam's really condescending towards Alanna in ways I find super irritating and unwilling to accept who she really is as a person). And I do think that's good for young kids to read about! Even though I never liked them together longterm, I found how their relationship was written was really unique to read as a young preteen. Honestly, same with Alanna's relationship with Jonathan! How they were in love as teenagers but just grew into different people that couldn't work together as a romantic couple, and how Alanna realized their relationship couldn't work out due to Jon's duties as king and what being married to him would force her to be. And again, just how she was able to maintain very strong friendships with both these people after the relationship ended (Jon took a minute, but they got there eventually)
BUT AT THE SAME TIME. Liam and Alanna's relationship is sooooo frustrating to get through, he's so condescending towards her aaaaaagh. And when I was a kid, I didn't realize that she and George had technically broken up because... I don't really get why they did?? I don't think Alanna ever planned to stay away from Corus FOREVER and George would totally have been down with a long distance relationship until she was ready to come back. I mean, that's how it went with Jonathan before they broke up (even though Jon was probably cheating on her cause he was still being an ass at the time and didn't see just sleeping with other women as being unfaithful, idk this never gets confirmed or denied) Honestly I really just wish Alanna and George had just stayed together for the majority of Lioness Rampant and just written letters to each other or talked through magic fire. It doesn't feel super fair that George is easily the best romantic option, but Alanna probably spends the least amount of time pining over him the way she does with Liam and Jon.
I mean, they do get married though. So my dude definitely wins in the long run. But still!! I wanted more pining!!

Three ships: Joe/Nicky (The Old Guard), Jyn/Cassian (Rogue One, also Andor even though she’s not even in it but that has resurfaced feelings), Bucky/Natasha (after all this time? always)
First ever ship: I’d have to say Alanna of Trebond/Liam Ironarm from Lioness Rampant. I did come around to Alanna/George, though, but Alanna/Jon was not meant to be!
Last song: "Mr. Brightside” on iTunes, constant refrain of “Baby Shark” out loud except that Bébé has usually has replace “baby” with various names...also sometimes “shark” becomes “goat,” because she met a baby goat in December.
Last movie: Matilda the Musical
Currently reading: Bébé keeps having me start She Persisted but then nopes out around Helen Keller. Perhaps it’s a commentary on Keller’s complicated but indelible legacy?
Currently watching: Leverage: Redemption. I’m really enjoying it—there’s a little more Hardison in the new season, Breanna is a gem, Harry’s actually pretty fun most of the time (and knows his place, narratively and otherwise), and the rest of the original cast remains magnificent. Also...look, it’s not prestige TV, and it’s not the original run. But it’s still a lot of fun, and the show knows you’re there to, like, watch Sophie do a million accents at the flip of a switch, Eliot serve appetizers while beating down henchmen, and Parker flipping through lasers while bad people get their comeuppance. And it delivers. (I still don’t miss Nate, still like how the show’s employed him in-universe as character motivation for Sophie and the others.)
Currently consuming: A lot more Blue Apron than usual while Boyfriend is quarantining at an Airbnb and declined to plan on cooking himself anything while convalescing with XBB. So I’ve been sharing things with Bébé for dinner and then eating the rest for lunch the next day. It’s been a long couple of weeks.
Currently craving: The end of the aforementioned quarantine; he got COVID at a conference and basically got home, tested, and left so Bébé and I wouldn’t get sick. This has worked (four negative rapids and two negative PCRs over here! Also vaccines!) but we pretty much haven’t seen him in a week and a half and that’s sucked.
Tagging: If you haven’t done this and would like to, go for it. I don’t know your life.

"Looking at him, Alanna saw understanding. He knows, she thought. He knows about things like betrayal, and being afraid, and the looks on people's faces when they know you did something they thought impossible."

You know, the Song of the Lioness quartet gets a whole lot funnier when you headcanon every main character as a disaster bi just losing their mind at any given point in time.

wow ok if I ever needed clear evidence that age & life experience really change the way you read a book, I have it now, because 12-year-old me HATED Liam Ironarm SO MUCH for being a dick to Alanna about magic and distracting from her and George, and now reading Lioness Rampant again at 23 the whole time I was like... you know what? he’s fine. it’s fine. I get it. George isn’t even there! their relationship is mainly based on physical attraction and honestly Liam’s fear of magic is fine, indeed reasonable when you look at the shit Thom has done and Roger is doing with magic, and he’s 100% in the right to get mad at Alanna for violating his trust and boundaries because she very much did do that and even though she is The Hero and did it for a Noble Purpose it was still wrong of her to do!
and sure, he’s still a dick at times, Thayet is right when she says he wants to fit everyone into neat little boxes so he can understand them easily and it’s not cool that he treats Alanna wanting to be more feminine the way he does, but like on balance? he’s still arguably better to her in this book than Jonathan was in the third book because he may be a jerk about her choices in trying to balance being a woman and being a warrior but at least he’s not trying to make them for her! and also they were never going to end up together and they both knew that and that is just fine!
so life has led me here and I’m on board now and Liam Ironarm is just fine, actually! anyway reread books once every decade, it’s good for you

Personal Headcanon: Whenever Alanna slept with Jon or George, Faithful would curl up and sleep in bed with them (I mean the actual sleeping part; he wouldn't be there for the sexy times). With Liam, Faithful sleeps elsewhere. Or maybe he's obnoxious and cuddles with Liam to make him uncomfortable on purpose...
But Jon in particular LOVES that cat, and I like to think he would get some good kitty cuddles.

Every time there’s Tortall age gap talk people tend to get so focused on George and Numair and if you’re like “What about Liam? He was 20 years older than Alanna” people are always like “Wait...I totally forgot he was so much older, I thought he was like her age”
and I’m convinced that that is because although it is clearly stated in the text that Liam is a full-on middle aged man it’s easy to forget since his emotional maturity and general behavior would seem to indicate that he was maybe 19 at most
