ACE AIR: SAMANTHA QUICK
youtube
Program: Ace AIR Location: Ace Hotel New York Date of Stay: 11.25.18 Artist: Samantha Quick
Creator Samantha Quick spent the night at Ace Hotel New York and made a video entitled Lifestyle Coach Destroys Dietician, featuring a mock debate between “psychologist-turned-lifestyle coach” Jordan B. Peterson and “actress-turned-lifestyle coach” Gwyneth Paltrow. Embracing the prevalence of both the debate format and the viral mashup style of editing in YouTube culture, Quick’s video offers a playful look at celebrity and health. Quick says:
Both figures ascribe to, and encourage others to ascribe to, a wellness philosophy where responsibility for "feeling good" is mainly the responsibility of the individual.  I wanted to explore the parallelisms between these two public figures, the ways in which their relationship with food functions as a form of control, and how diet plays a role in regaining control over their bodies and happiness.
Samantha Quick is a prolific VR content creator, with almost 100 bylines in The New York Times. She graduated from New York's School of Visual Arts with a BFA in Computer Art, VFX and 3D animation. Quick has since worked as a producer, shooter, editor and technical advisor in VR/AR and games. She has notably worked with Doug Liman as a VFX producer on the VR series Invisible. In 2016 she became one of the founding members of The Daily 360, an ambitious New York Times project to publish one 360 video per day with the goal of learning about and experimenting with the possibilities (and limitations) of 360 and VR video.
This November, our Artists in Residence are curated by Nordic International Film Festival (NIFF). Founded by the Swedish actors and film producers Linnea Larsdotter and Johan Matton, NIFF has quickly grown to become a cultural element in the competitive film festival landscape. NIFF is at the forefront of the battle for an inclusive film market, proudly following the lead of the Nordic countries that top the world’s equality tests. The festival programmers take the Bechdel test and the Vito Russo test into consideration in making the official selection.

ACE AIR: COREY CAMPERCHIOLI
Tumblr media
Program: Ace AIR Location: Ace Hotel New York Date of Stay: 11.18.18 Artist: Corey Camperchioli
On a recent Sunday stay at Ace Hotel New York, writer/actor Corey Camperchioli embraced “the space to step away from the hustle of New York City life” and penned a series of poems as a “reminder to take time for yourself when you can.” You can read Corey’s series in its entirety here, with his poem Start Small featured below:
A woman on the downtown N train told me to write a poem and here I am she said start small and go big so this is a small poem for you, however old you are! I couldn’t tell if you were 17 or 40 I can’t tell if this long-distance thing will work, so I send him a text saying simply I miss you. Because you told me to start Small are you Happy?  I am somewhere between remorse and remodeling my bathroom.   But I will change out the moldy shower curtain today because, start small.
Corey Camperchioli is the writer, associate producer and star of Femme, a wildly successful short film that is currently being adapted to television with Emmy and Golden Globe winner Rachel Brosnahan attached as Executive Producer. Corey made his film debut opposite Laverne Cox in Migraine, which premiered at Tribeca Film Festival. He is a graduate of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. The Daily Mail writes, "Camperchioli has learned how to embrace his femininity and is inspiring others from around the world to do the same."

ACE AIR: BRANDON BROWN
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Program: Ace AIR Location: Ace Hotel New York Date of Stay: 11.04.18 Artist: Brandon Brown
With the late afternoon sunlight streaming through the windows of his room at Ace Hotel New York, filmmaker Brandon Brown shot a series of digital photos entitled Frames within frames. Brown offers the following reflections on his work that day:
The photos that I shot were inspired by Hôtel Monterey, a silent film directed by Chantal Akerman in 1973. I wanted to experiment with how objects in my room at Ace were framed, and how objects outside of the room (adjacent buildings and the sky) were framed. Overall, I played with the idea that a hotel room is a place within a place (a city) and often away from a place (that you’ve originally come from).
Brandon Brown is originally from Upstate New York. He studied at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and graduated with a BFA in film. He directs long and short-form films, which have screened at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Art of Brooklyn Film Festival and NorthwestFest (Edmonton). Writer/director Keith Hodder describes Brandon's work as "that of a true cinephile."

ACE AIR: HALEY RICE
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Program: Ace AIR Location: Ace Hotel New York Date of Stay: 11.11.18 Artist: Haley Rice
During her recent stay at Ace Hotel New York, Haley Rice checked in with "a lot of pain [and] a desire to heal" which she sculpted into an array of vignettes entitled That Fucking Bitch: An Exercise in Perspective. After jotting down supportive quotes from friends on notecards, she arranged them on the floor of her hotel room and used them as inspiration for a twelve-hour writing marathon that continued into the early morning. Reflecting on an incident of her partner's infidelity, Rice "walked with these women who hurt me and made myself see their perspective."
You can read That Fucking Bitch: An Exercise in Perspective in its entirety here, with a short excerpt featured below:
This woman was a card in my hand. She had always been— she was effusive and kind, self-deprecating, bubbly and fun, which was what made her such a good bartender years ago when I met her, and good manager now. But she was emotional, which made her playable, and she had a weakness for men, which is why she was in hell. Or so it seemed. It had been 8 months since her guy pulled that stunt with our coworker, and ever since she had confided in me that she was struggling with insomnia and panic attacks. In the middle of it all, she was writing this play she kept blabbing about like it would change the world.. so delusional. And then last week her favorite coworker asked if she could bring his ex to the staff party.
Haley Rice hails from Nashville, Tennessee. She graduated from the New York Film Academy's Musical Theatre Conservatory and obtained a BA in voice and theatre from the University of South Carolina. She backpacked through Europe for the better part of 2015 and considers these travels to have provided her greatest education. Haley also trained extensively at the Matthew Corozine Studio in New York. Her 2017 play LOU premiered at New York's Paradise Factory and received features in The Huffington Post and Broadway Select.
