This planting of Liquidambar styraciflua (sweet gum, American sweet gum, satin walnut) made a great addition to this car park. This deciduous tree has maple-like leaves but these grow alternately on the twigs rather than the opposite placement of Acer species (maple).

me uploading 14 observations of american sweetgum seedlings knowing probably most people won't be able or willing to identify them because the baby leaves are different from the adult leaves like source: trust me

Here's the baby leaves:

The autumn colour of Liquidambar styraciflua 'Worplesdon' (sweet gum) is enhanced by sunshine. The tree has lobed leaves, which are similar to that of Acer (maple) species but the leaves are alternately positioned on the branches rather than opposite.
