#Repost with @spinedocny Retractor • City: Surgeons use all types of retractors. Retractors help us hold an incision or wound open during a procedure. They also help in holding back certain organs or tissues to give us a better look at the target location of the surgery. . . You’ve got to love the names of all these different types of retractors: Army-Navy, Hohmann, Meyerding, Ladyfinger, Weitlaner (which for the longest time I thought was spelled Wheatlander), Gelpis. Each of them are helpful in certain unique situations and types of surgeries. . . The retractor system pictured here is plays an essential part in the cervical spine surgery I last posted about. It has a good name: the Shadowline retractor. The different colors represent varying lengths of each blade depending on how deep someone’s spine is located from the incision. The blades hook onto the wooden handles seen in the bottom left of the tray allowing me to place them in the wound. A self retaining retractor is then used (requiring no surgeon hands) to keep my surgical field and microscope view clear. . . I know we have lots of medical professionals/students/nurses following. Spine • Tumor • Removal: one of the most interesting cases we get to perform as a spine surgeon is removal of a tumor from the spinal cord as seen in this video. #Repost @spinedocny (@get_repost) ・・・ . Here the tumor is intradural meaning it's literally inside the membrane (the dura) that surrounds the spinal cord. Tiny microscopic sutures are used to pull the dura flaps apart while the tumor removal is done. The clear fluid you see is cerebrospinal fluid that our spinal cord is bathed in.
