Note
I had abnormal red blood cell counts on tests like CBC panels where the RDW and such would come back funny for literally YEARS until a doctor bothered to listen to me and run my feratin at which point it was a 3 and I needed infusion therapy... So yeah definitely make sure y'all get your iron checked especially if RBC counts are funny on other tests!
yes!!!! literally!! if you're able to access the numerical results for your blood tests yourself I would recommend it because then *you* can look at what's going on there. Having looked at my CBC results from the past few years, my MCHC (concentration of hemoglobin (an iron rich protein) in red blood cells) is either in the low range or below the range reccomended but it's never been flagged up. And I only even got most of my CBCs because they're required for my testosterone prescription.
Get your iron and ferritin levels checked!!

Exploring Your Blood Composition: The Complete Blood Picture (CBP)
The Complete Blood Picture (CBP), also referred to as a Complete Blood Count (CBC), serves as a fundamental diagnostic tool in modern medicine. By analyzing various components of the blood, this test offers invaluable insights into an individual's health status, aiding in the diagnosis and management of numerous medical conditions. Let's delve into the intricacies of the CBP, exploring its significance, components, and clinical applications.
Significance of the Complete Blood Picture:
The Complete Blood Picture (CBP) test, holds immense significance in healthcare due to its ability to provide comprehensive information about the composition and functionality of blood. This test aids healthcare professionals in assessing overall health, diagnosing disorders, and monitoring treatment responses. By evaluating key parameters within the blood, the CBP offers valuable clues regarding the presence of infection, inflammation, anemia, clotting disorders, and various systemic illnesses.
Components of the Complete Blood Picture:
The CBP encompasses a range of blood components, each offering unique insights into an individual's physiological state:
1. Red Blood Cells (RBCs):
Red blood cells, also known as erythrocytes, are responsible for transporting oxygen from the lungs to tissues throughout the body. The CBP measures parameters such as RBC count, hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit level, and mean corpuscular volume (MCV), providing crucial information about oxygen-carrying capacity and the presence of anemia.
2. White Blood Cells (WBCs):
White blood cells, or leukocytes, play a vital role in the body's immune response, defending against infections and foreign invaders. The CBP assesses WBC count and categorizes different types of white blood cells, such as neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils, aiding in the detection of infections, inflammatory conditions, and immune system disorders.
3. Platelets:
Platelets, also called thrombocytes, are essential for blood clotting and wound healing. The CBP measures platelet count, helping identify potential bleeding disorders, thrombocytopenia (low platelet count), or thrombocytosis (high platelet count).
4. Other Parameters:
In addition to RBCs, WBCs, and platelets, the CBP may include assessments of mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), and red cell distribution width (RDW), providing further insights into the characteristics and morphology of blood cells.
Clinical Applications of the Complete Blood Picture:
The CBP finds extensive applications across various medical specialties and clinical scenarios:
1. Diagnosis of Anemia:
By evaluating RBC indices and hemoglobin levels, the CBP helps diagnose different types of anemia, including iron deficiency anemia, vitamin B12 deficiency anemia, and hemolytic anemia.
2. Detection of Infection and Inflammation:
Abnormalities in WBC count and differential count can indicate the presence of bacterial, viral, fungal, or parasitic infections, as well as inflammatory conditions such as autoimmune diseases and allergic reactions.
3. Monitoring Disease Progression:
The CBP facilitates the monitoring of certain chronic conditions, including leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloproliferative disorders, by tracking changes in blood cell counts and morphology over time.
4. Assessment of Bleeding and Clotting Disorders:
Platelet count and other clotting parameters assist in diagnosing and managing bleeding disorders such as thrombocytopenia, hemophilia, and von Willebrand disease.
5. Evaluation of Overall Health:
The CBP serves as a routine screening tool during general health check-ups, enabling early detection of underlying health issues and facilitating timely interventions.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, the Complete Blood Picture (CBP) is an indispensable tool in modern medicine, providing valuable insights into blood composition and function. By evaluating key parameters such as red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and hemoglobin levels, the CBP aids in the diagnosis, monitoring, and management of various medical conditions, ultimately contributing to improved patient care and outcomes.

What are the benefits of a CBC test?
Tumblr media
A complete blood count (CBC) test is a common blood test that is ordered by healthcare providers for a variety of reasons, such as to evaluate overall health, monitor treatment for certain medical conditions, or to diagnose certain medical conditions. The CBC test measures various components of blood, including:
1. Red blood cells (RBCs): The number, size, and shape of RBCs are evaluated to determine if a person has anemia or other blood disorders.
2. White blood cells (WBCs): The number and type of WBCs are evaluated to determine if a person has an infection or inflammation.
3. Platelets: The number and size of platelets are evaluated to determine if a person is at risk for bleeding or blood clots.
4. Hemoglobin (Hb) and Hematocrit (Hct): These values reflect the amount of oxygen-carrying protein (hemoglobin) and the percentage of RBCs in the blood (hematocrit).
5. Mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC): These values reflect the size and amount of hemoglobin in RBCs.

Benefits of a Complete Blood Count
A complete blood count (CBC) is an important diagnostic and screening tool used by healthcare providers to evaluate a patient’s overall health. It can help detect a variety of conditions, such as infections, anemia, diseases of the immune system, and more. The CBC measures the number, size, and types of cells in your blood. It looks at red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body while white blood cells help fight infection. Platelets are responsible for helping with clotting when bleeding occurs.
A CBC can be done as part of a routine checkup to screen for problems or because someone isn't feeling well. An abnormal result from a complete blood count test can alert healthcare providers to potential issues that may need further investigation or treatment. It can also provide valuable information about how your body is functioning overall so that any changes that arise over time can be tracked and monitored accordingly.

How Is the Test Performed?
A Complete Blood Count (CBC) is a common test performed by your healthcare provider to measure different parts and features of your blood. The CBC can help detect anemia, infection, inflammation, and many other disorders. To perform the test, a sample of blood is taken from your arm or finger and analyzed using an automated hematology analyzer that counts cells and collects information on their size and structure. It also measures the concentration of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, hemoglobin levels, hematocrit levels, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and red cell distribution width (RDW). A CBC with differential is also known as a blood differential test because it includes further evaluation of the types of white blood cells present in the sample. This type of testing may be ordered as part of a routine exam or if there are signs or symptoms suggesting an underlying medical condition. To prepare for the CBC test, you should fast for 8-10 hours before having your blood drawn so that accurate results can be obtained. The skin at the puncture site will also be cleansed with antiseptic before taking a sample to reduce potential risk of infection.

Essential Blood Tests You Need Every Year
Blood tests are the most common type of medical tests and are useful in many ways. Blood tests reveal the general health of a person. In case of any infections, blood tests are done to find out the pathogens in the blood. Blood tests also reveal how the liver and kidney are functioning and in case of certain genetic conditions, blood tests are used to screen the patients.
Common instructions before getting a blood test include not eating or drinking (except water) for at least 12 hours prior to the test. It is also advised not to take any medication. What are some of the blood tests that can be taken yearly? Thyroid test TSH – Thyroid stimulating hormone and other thyroid hormones such as thyroxine and triiodothyronine are tested through this blood test. Having lower or higher levels of these hormones indicate a thyroid condition. Diabetes Test this test helps detect the sugar levels in your blood. The blood test to check diabetes is of three types: fasting glucose test, glucose tolerance test, HbA1C test. In case you have been diagnosed with diabetes you can use blood glucose kits to check the blood sugar levels at home. These are available at your nearest pharmacy and can also be ordered online. Mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration or MCHC blood test is part of the complete blood count (CBC) blood test. This is used to find out the severity of anaemia in a patient. WBC blood test is done to find the WBC count in one’s blood. WBC or leukocytes help in fighting infections. This also included in the Full blood count (FBC) of the blood test report. The FBC helps to also reveal the platelets report. Normal platelet counts ranges 150,000 to 450,000 platelets per micro litre of blood. High platelet count is a condition called thrombocytosis and lower is called thrombocytopenia. A type of blood test called blood typing is done to identify the blood group you belong to. This is extremely important for everyone to get this done at least once as early in life as possible. Knowing your blood group type is highly important as it can save your life and the life of others. In case of an accident that requires immediate blood transfusion knowing the blood group type helps in donating blood. In correct transfusion of one blood type to another can result in life threatening complications. Blood typing is a blood test done before any transfusion of blood into the patients. It is also done to prevent the rhesus disease in pregnant mothers, to identify if the blood group of the child is same as that of the mother. If it isn’t, the RBCs from the mother’s body start attacking the child.

Sooooo it’s the last night of my trip. I came down to WV to visit my Aunt and Uncle for the week. It was great because I knew before coming down that it was going to be very low key, hanging around the house, watching movies, baking, cooking... and that’s exactly what happened!
Me and my Aunt did go out to a couple stores for some light shopping which was nice but other than that we pretty much stayed home. I made these amazing oatmeal pecan chocolate chip cookies that were such a big hit the first time that I ended up making them again! I also made beef stew with dumplings...so delicious... might make it this week at home.
Usually when I come down here I take the train to Baltimore and they pick me up and we drive further down to WV or I’ve even driven all the way from Boston. Either way it’s an all day affair and I typically leave 6am/7am and get to their house in the afternoon/early evening. This time I flew to DC and then rented a car and drove to their house and it was the best decision I ever made! This trip was all about relaxing and I didn’t feel like spending 10-12 hours traveling. The plane was 1.5 hours and then DC to WV was another 1.5 hours. So I arrived here before noon last Sunday and tomorrow I’ll be back in Boston before 11am!! I’ve visited them so many times in the last 10 years since they moved down here and this short trip is amazing... and a lot more expensive, but so worth it!
I met with my therapist early in the week and we talked more about switching jobs and the fear. I’m down to seeing her every two weeks now. I worked more on my application for a job at McLean but I think I’m so worried I’m not experienced or educated enough that I’m doing it at a slow pace. Even though they clearly say “no experience required” and “bachelors preferred”. Ughhhh I know this specific job listing is going to disappear soon cause it’s been posted since the 4th but at the same time I’m also waiting for other postings/units to pop up cause I know they’re so short staffed/always hiring.... I don’t know... I just don’t want to look like a fool and still be at Stop & Shop come April because I’ve told so many people at work that I was stepping down in March/before Easter, but I’m nervous about switching careers.
I did so much online shopping while I’ve been here. Afterpay and Klarna are a godsend!! But I told myself no matter what, I am not opening any packages until I go through and donate all my clothes that I don’t wear anymore. I honestly don’t know how I accumulated so much because when I moved out 2.5 years ago I did a massive deep clean of my clothes and then when we moved 1.5 years ago I did the same thing and now my half of the bedroom is just piled up with so. many. clothes. It’s ridiculous.
There was a couple things I wanted to do while I was down here and stop eating ice was one of them. That did not happen because I forgot that their refrigerator’s ice machine has a “crushed ice” feature. So the addiction is still as bad and to my shock I still haven’t broken a tooth yet. A couple of people have told me that eating ice can be a sign of low iron and sure enough my blood test results from a week ago showed so many different tests were low. I don’t know how low is bad but googling “low HGB”, “low HCT”, “low MCV”, “low MCH”, “low MCHC”, high “RDW-CV”.... they all say low iron and point to anemia. God, one of them mentioned cancer and the other night I literally had a dream that I had to start radiation... it was so fucking scary. I doubt my medical stuff is that bad but I know something is up cause I have other symptoms of anemia but I’m trying to not self diagnose, so I’m just waiting for the call from my doctor to discuss this more.
I think that’s enough of my essay long update 🙃

Hey everyone. My dog, Destiny, has been diagnosed with lymphoma 😢 I'm sharing her case study to help future vets/techs and also to help myself process the news. I apologise in advance for the long post since mobile doesn't have a read more options.
• Signalment: 11yo SF mixed breed canine
[Most patients are 4-9 years old at diagnosis; high-risk breeds include boxer, basset hound, golden retriever, Saint Bernard, Scottish terrier, Airedale terrier, and bulldog]
• History: History of roundworms and whipworms as a young puppy. HBC without serious injuries at 5mo. Spayed at 6m. Had a benign skin growth removed a few years ago. Tooth root abscess dx'd on May 27, 2020 and treated with Carprofen and Ciprofloxacin, responded well to tx. Finished medications on 6/3/20. UTD on vaccines and parasite prevention.
Starting 6/4/20, Mom noticed Destiny having a decreased appetite and increased thirst. She had 1 instance each of vomiting and diarrhea. Otherwise she was behaving normally.
On 6/6/20 Destiny woke her up very early with an episode of dyspnea and anxious vocalizing. While trying to calm her down, Mom felt a hard lump under her neck. Mom immediately called me and sent me video of her breathing. After she'd been awake for a few minutes, the episode subsided, but it returned whenever she tried to sleep. Her MM stayed pink. I called Doc and forwarded the video, and she decided Destiny needed seen right away.
When I picked her up from Mom's, I felt under her neck and my heart sank. Her submandibular lymph nodes were the same size and hardness as a baseball. I've only had 2 cases where the lymph nodes felt like that and it was *not* lymphoma (one was a severe erhlichiosis and the other was an autoimmune condition).
• Physical Exam: Moderate POD present. She had bilateral enlargement of her submandibular, prescapular, and politeal lymph nodes [I'm bad at palpating lymph nodes; if I can feel them, it's Not Good]. Otherwise PE was unremarkable. After returning to her kennel, she vomited water and stomach fluid.
• Diagnostics: We ran an Idexx 4dx SNAP test, which was negative. We also drew blood for a CBC and Chemistry panel, and I did a FNA of 3 different lymph nodes. We sent the samples out to Idexx for analysis.
• Treatment plan: Since an oncologist referral isn't in the cards for us, we started her on the palliative prednisone dose recommended by the oncologist, doxycycline in case it was a tick disease not covered by the 4dx, and Cerenia for the vomiting and diarrhea. We also put her on a bland diet.
• Diagnostic results:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Taken together, especially in light of her clinical signs, her bloodwork abnormalities point further toward a diagnosis of lymphoma:
- A very high WBC count
- Neutrophilia
- Large #s of band cells, indicating an increased demand for neutrophils
- Lymphocytosis
- Monocytosis
- Eosinophilia
- Hyperglobulinemia (can be caused by lymphoma or by chronic infection, like POD)
- decreased albumin:globulin ratio (due to decreased albumin with an increase in globulins)
- The increased SDMA could also be due to lymphoma, or it could just be a response to the course of NSAIDs she recently finished, as well as a few other causes that are less likely in her case.
- Hypoalbuminemia can be due to increased losses through the intestines or into tissue, or due to inappetence
- MCH and MCHC can decrease due to low albumin
- High specCPL indicates something has upset the pancreas; it could be a low-level pancreatitis due to table scraps or it could be a secondary result of inflammation caused by a primary disease.
However, the FNA results provided the definitive diagnosis of lymphoma:

We are going to continue Destiny on palliative care until her quality of life diminishes, and then we'll put her to sleep. Because it depends on the type of lymphoma and her response to the disease and palliative medication, it may only be a week, or it may be a few months. Doc has seen 1 dog go into remission with pred alone, but it's very unlikely. We're preparing for the worst and will just be grateful if we get more good time with her 💔

i have some personal good news (to me at least) that i thought i'd share bc i'm really happy rn (or maybe more like, feel really validated, the news in on itself isn't good)
here lemme put a read more to not bother anyone
[[MORE]]
i had my blood tested today in the morning, and the results came in the afternoon (online).
i was really stressing over the test for the last days, as it was to check for inflammation, and i was scared it'd turn out that everything's normal. that it's all in my head. that i don't have any actual issues, and just make it up, imagine it because i want attention. i was terrified of taking the test.
the results came- and they gave me more than i could ever ask for.
first off, i AM anemic. all the mcv, mch and mchc are WAY below the norm. meaning, anemia. i wasn't imagining it. i wasn't just under the subjective impression of being exhausted and weak.
secondly, all the ones that indicate inflammation/bacterial infection are way up. also, one of those is at a level that clearly says "single-organ infection/inflammation". i wasn't imagining the pain. i DO have appendicitis. it's real, it wasn't just in my head.
i WASN'T imagining being tired, sleepy and in pain every single day. i'm anemic with an inflamed appendix. i have ALL THE RIGHT to feel like this. i'm sick. i'm not imagining it. i have a right to feel so bad, i'm not lying to myself that something's wrong, i'm not just trying to get attention, i'm not hypochondriac (like my mom likes to say i am), i don't have munchausen syndrome or anything like that. it's real. it was real all along, i wasn't imagining my symptoms. my problems are real.
i just feel- really validated by it. i can't be called a hypochondriac anymore. and i can't put myself down because of it anymore, i can't doubt myself anymore (in that specific area), it's all on paper, written by someone fully objective.
it just... feels nice. to know that it wasn't all in my head.
sure, the news are pretty bad, but it's a huge weight off my shoulders.
i will continue on taking iron supplements, and patiently waiting for my appendicitis to finally progress. but now i won't be worrying about it being my imagination. i was right, even if at some point even i started doubting it.
