ABC Sports: MLB 1988-NLCS-Game 4-Los Angeles Dodgers @ New York Mets: Full Game
. Source:The Daily Press The Mets and their fans have to feel that 1988 was a year that got away from them. Because the Mets and Oakland Athletics were the two best all around teams in MLB that year and neither one of them won the World series. 1988 goes to show you that baseball is a game where if you get great pitching and play great defense, all you need to do is score enough runs to win.…

Perfect piece by Zachary Rymer of Bleacher Report! I wish I'd written it myself! I've literally had every single same thought - he just fleshes them out a bit, uses the fun word "Jeterian" (i wouldn't have come up with that so 👍) & has some fun with Judge simply being a "giant - Fun read & it's 110% RIGHT ON!

Giants’ Kapler pauses protest, stands for national anthem
PHILADELPHIA — San Francisco Giants manager Gabe Kapler stood just outside the third base dugout at Citizens Bank Park for the national anthem on Monday, taking a break on Memorial Day from his protest against the direction of the nation. Kapler, who began his protest Friday, stood by himself at the railing of the Giants dugout during the playing of taps during the holiday ceremony, which was…

BASEBALL PRIMER: Playoffs
Here is the tag where you can find all the posts.
The MLB playoffs are an elimination style tournament. There are several series within the MLB Playoffs: the division, championship, and world series.
The divisional series are the American League Divisional Series (ALDS) and National League Divisional Series (NLDS) respectively. Winners of the divisional series then move on to the championship series.
Then, there is the American League Championship Series (ALCS) and National League Championship Series (NLCS), in which the winner of each series will face the other in the World Series. This is the first time in this tournament an NL team will see an AL team, and vice versa.
WHO QUALIFIES?
Five teams from each league qualify (making it ten total). Six are the winners of each division--NL West, NL Central, NL East, AL West, AL Central, and AL East--and automatically qualify for the playoffs. The four remaining ones are known as the 'wild card', and these are the teams in each league that had the best record but did not win the division.
WILD CARD
The wild card round makes up the first round of the playoffs. This is a single elimination game, so you only have one chance to make it into the playoffs. One winner will be from the AL, one will be from the NL.
DIVISIONAL PLAY
At this point, eight teams remain, four from each league. This series is either known as the ALDS or the NLDS. Whoever won the wild card game then goes on to play the team with the best regular season record in their league. The other two remaining teams in the league play each other. At this point, the games are best of five--first team to three wins in a series moves on to the NLCS or ALCS respectively.
CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
This series works just like the others, but at this point, there are only four teams remaining, two from each league. This time, these play off in a seven game series, and first one to four wins.
WORLD SERIES
The winner of the ALCS and the NLCS face off against each other in a seven series game, first to four wins it all and will be crowned World Series Champions.
Back at the very beginning, what the team won wasn't a trophy, but a pennant that they then could fly over their stadium. Times have changed and they win a trophy now, but it's still called the pennant race.

hii!
how are you?
I saw you posts about the blue jays, and as someone trying to get into baseball, can you like maybe give me a rundown of how the league works and maybe an overview of the blue jays since thats the team Im probably gonna be rooting for? I'm trying to get into it but im completely new to the sport and im honestly a little overwhelmed.
p.s I love your blog!
-🦫
hiii! i'm decent!! i hope you are too :)
omg okay, i only got into baseball a couple of seasons ago, so i don't know like every tiny detail, but here's a little overview! i'm a little honoured you asked me kjnskdjnsda
i'm assuming you know more or less how a game of baseball is played, but if not lmk!
so. mlb first.
the teams are divided between east, central, and west. within each of those there is also the american league and the national league.
AL east: Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays, Toronto Blue Jays
AL central: Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Guardians (formerly the Indians but pretty much only old people still call them that), Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals, Minnesota Twins
AL west: Houston Astros, LA Angels, Oakland Athletics, Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers
NL east: Atlanta Braves, Miami Marlins, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, Washington Nationals
NL central: Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Brewers, Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals
NL west: Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, LA Dodgers, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants
In the NL, pitchers used to have to bat as well as hit, whereas in the AL there was a designated hitter (DH) who was not in the field, but rather stayed on the bench until it was their turn in the lineup to bat (instead of the pitcher). This rule changed last season I believe, and pitchers are no longer required to bat in the NL, but they can still do so if they want (see Shohei Ohtani, an incredible pitcher and batter). Pretty sure that's the only major difference. The AL and NL distinction is used during the All Star Games where the best (objectively) players from across the league play a game: AL versus NL.
It used to be that teams played their division rivals more than other teams, but the MLB has a new schedule this year that is trying to make it so each team plays division rivals less and interleague teams more (e.g., instead of playing other AL east teams a million times, the Blue Jays will play more NL teams). This is to try and make things a bit more even in terms of who plays whom, and also will allow fans to hopefully see their favourite teams more regularly.
For baseball, unlike in, say hockey where there's just single games against teams at a time, MLB baseball has series, in which two teams play anywhere from 2-4 games back to back. There are winners and losers of each game, of course, but there's also the winner and loser of the series. Series that have 2 or 4 games can have a tie, though.
Like other professional sports, there is a final playoff stint for MLB. It happens in the fall. This site has a good rundown of the playoff format!
And here's a list of over 150 basbeall terms/phrases!
Onto the Blue Jays:
So, the jays are Canada's only MLB team and as a result they pretty much have an entire country backing them. They are very vocal and proud of this fact, and take pride in representing a whole country. So that's always nice!
There are some favourites on the team, especially on tumblr lol. These include:

Whit Merrifield
Second baseman or outfielder

American
Came to the Jays last year and was a little controversial bc of uhhh vaccine stuff but it's chill now (i think)
Kinda just a Dude
Kevin Kiermaier
Outfielder
Number 39
32 years old
Huge uproar when he was signed this off season because of a stolen data card that Kirk dropped (read about it here if you want)
But is doing well in spring training so far so he's slowly being forgiven by the fans
This is not every player at all. If there are any that I didn't put and you wanna ask about, go ahead! I just did not want this post to be fucking massive, and I feel bad for taking so long as it is.
But yeah, I hope this helped somewhat! Again, I am still kinda new to baseball myself and do not know everything, but I'm always happy to help teach others about the Jays :D

48 Hours in Chicago
Chicago is a great city explore on foot, as many of the sites are clustered together. Even though it's the third largest city in America, it can be conquered in a weekend.
Aside from the obligatory tourist sites like the world famous architecture and Millenium Park (with that bean-mirror structure called Cloud Gate), there are plenty of off-the-beaten path surprises that reward random exploring on foot. Two tours I recommend are the architecture river cruise and the Gangsters and Ghosts walking tour. Both are about 90 minutes and can be easily done in a morning or afternoon. The Willis Tower has awesome views of the city, but lines can get long so book tickets in advance.
I'm not a huge art guy, but The Art Institute of Chicago is definitely worth a couple hours. Some real classics in here, including Edward Hopper's Nighthawks, Grant Wood's American Gothic, a bunch of Van Goghs and some Dali-inspired surrealist stuff. This is one of those museums where there are cool surprises around every corner.
A few miles north of downtown (also called "The Loop") is Lincoln Park. The park has a huge free zoo, all sorts of random stuff to check out (including this huge National Historical Landmark lily pool), and on a hot day...shade. West of the park in the Lincoln Park neighborhood are tons of restaurants, shops and shaded residential streets. The lost-in-time Biograph Theatre is where notorious bank robber John Dillinger was shot in 1934.
North of Lincoln Park is the oldest ballpark in the National League, Wrigley Field (1914). The park is like stepping into a time-capsule, and along with Boston's Fenway, a must for all MLB fans. Make sure to grab a PBR and a Chicago dog!
Speaking of food, while in Chicago it is mandatory to have the deep dish pizza (try Lou Malnati's), an Italian beef sandwich (Al's) and of course the Chicago Dog (The Weinercircle).

The Dodgers' secret sauce
Tumblr media
ARIZONA - The Dodgers enter the season with more superstar talent than any team in Major League Baseball (MLB). But what makes this group even more special is team depth and versatility. Manager Dave Roberts and President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman have always valued players who can play multiple positions. Chris Taylor has made a name for himself in Los Angeles doing just that.
Tumblr media
Smashing: Kiki Hernandez goes yard on one of his two home runs against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Opening Day, March 28, 2019. The Dodgers his eight home runs in the team's opening day victory at Dodger Stadium. Photo by Dennis J. Freeman/News4usonline The two latest additions to the roster during Spring Training involved enhancing flexibility, something the front office has loved during their recent stretch of NL West dominance. With the re-signing of Kiké Hernández and the addition of Andre Lipcius, Los Angeles now once again leads the league in super-utility players. “I think they can move everywhere,” said Dave Roberts. Taylor made the All-Star team in 2021, moving all over the infield and outfield. Hernández can play anywhere, having seen time at every position on the diamond, excluding catcher. Yes, he has even pitched before. Lipcius will likely start the season in the minors but will be called upon in the case of injury. Last year, he saw time at first, second, and third base and even spent some time in left field. “I think adding Andre is just another piece of depth, where in a long season, things can happen. So, another guy that can play anywhere on the dirt and conduct an at-bat has sort of been one of our secret sauces on the position player side,” said Roberts. Lipcius got his first crack at big-league action last year with the Detroit Tigers and had a .286 batting average in 13 games. Surprisingly, he was DFAed midway through camp before being scooped up by the Dodgers. “I certainly know bringing Kiké back was a priority, and what CT has done for us over the last five years has been huge, so we expect Andre to fit that same mold,” said Roberts. For Hernández, it is another chance to cement himself further as one of the all-time fan favorites in Dodger Blue. He won a World Series with the team in 2020 and is often viewed as the guy who raises team morale in the dugout and locker room while also coming up with clutch hits in monumental situations.
Tumblr media
Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts was selected as the National League Player of the Month for the month of August. Photo by Melinda Meijer/News4usonline His game-tying home run in game seven of the 2020 NLCS will go down as one of the biggest swings in Dodgers history, and his three-home run performance to send the Dodgers to the World Series in 2017 is just another example of how he always comes through in the biggest moments. “I feel like I am one of those players that plays better on winning teams and when a team is winning because of what I can bring to the table. In the end, it came down to Dodgers or Yankees,” said Hernández. “They were able to guarantee me to at least start against left-handed pitchers to start the year, and then from there on, anything can happen.” When Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, or Freddie Freeman need a day off this season, the lineup will not suffer. Another player will fill in with ease. Most teams would see a significant drop-off, but it is just business as usual for the Dodgers. It would not be surprising for one of the utility guys in Los Angeles to be the star on any given night, as it is something they have done time and time again. The rich keep getting richer, and at this point, it really is not even fair. Top Image Caption: LOS ANGELES, CA - OCTOBER 06: Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Chris Taylor (3) celebrates as he rounds the bases after hittting a walk-off two run home run in the 9th inning of the MLB National League Wild Card game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Los Angeles Dodgers on October 6, 2021 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, CA. BASEBALL PRIMER: The League
Here is the tag where you can find all the posts.
In this post we'll be talking about the league itself and how it's structured. It's pretty simple as far as leagues go, but I've also grown up with it structured like this, so I think it's still a great idea to cover it.
MLB is split up into two 'leagues': the American League (AL), and the National League (NL). Each league is split up into divisions. I would say you could think of them as conferences, but I don't think even that is right, because you can have two teams in the same region of the US in a different league. Currently, both leagues have an equal number of teams at fifteen each.
We'll start with the National League below the cut.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
The NL was established in 1876 and is sometimes called the "Senior Circuit". It originally started with eight chartered teams, and some of them are still around today: Chicago White Stockings (not to be confused with the CHICAGO WHITE SOX; this team became to be known as the CHICAGO CUBS), Boston Red Stockings (not to be confused with the BOSTON RED SOXS; the original Boston Red Stockings became the BOSTON BRAVES, then the MILWAUKEE BRAVES, and are now known today as ATLANTA BRAVES). However, this was at the very beginning of the leagues creation, and so teams came and went, but there are still some teams who have survived 100 and some odd years later: Cincinnati Reds, Los Angeles Dodgers (originally Brooklyn Dodgers), Pittsburgh Pirates, and the St Louis Cardinals.
Now, the league is split into three divisions. I will be indicating which year they were brought into the league, and their stadium.
National League East
Atlanta Braves - 1871, moved to ATL in 1966 - Truist Park
Miami Marlins - 1993 - LoanDepot Park
New York Mets - 1962 - Citi Field
Philadelphia Phillies - 1883 - Citizens Bank Park
Washington Nationals - 1969 - Nationals Park
National League Central
St Louis Cardinals - 1892 - Busch Stadium
Chicago Cubs - 1903 - Wrigley Field
Cincinnati Reds - 1890 - Great American Ballpark
Pittsburgh Pirates - 1891 - PNC Park
Milwaukee Brewers - 1969 - American Family Field
National League West
San Francisco Giants - 1958 - Oracle Park
Los Angeles Dodgers - 1958 - Dodger Stadium
Colorado Rockies - 1993 - Coors Field
Arizona Diamondbacks - 1998 - Chase Field
San Diego Padres - 1969 - Petco Park
AMERICAN LEAGUE
Established 25 years later and referred to as the "Junior Circuit". For a long time, and even still kind've today, the AL has had slightly different rules than the NL. For example, up until a couple of years ago, the AL was the only league to sanction a permanent DH. In the NL, pitchers were still allowed to hit and did more often than not. But the NL ended up adopting the ALs rule, and now they're even again. The AL also has some historic teams as well, and because the NYY are a part of their league, the AL has the most World Series wins.
The AL is divided up similarly as the NL.
American League East
Baltimore Orioles - 1954 - Oriole Park at Camden Yards
Boston Red Sox - 1901 - Fenway Park
New York Yankees - 1903 - Yankee Stadium
Tampa Bay Rays - 1998 - Tropicana Field
Toronto Blue Jays - 1977 - Rogers Centre
American League Central
Chicago White Sox - 1900 - Guaranteed Rate Field
Cleveland Guardians - 1900 - Progressive Field
Detroit Tigers - 1901 - Comerica Park
Kansas City Royals - 1969 - Kauffman Stadium
Minnesota Twins - 1961 - Target Field
American League West
Houston Astros - 1962 - Minute Maid Park
Los Angeles Angels - 1966 - Angel Stadium
Texas Rangers - 1972 - Globe Life Field
Oakland Athletics - 1968 - Oakland Coliseum
Seattle Mariners - 1977 - T-Mobile Park
