Ok, so Allays are cute and all, but can we talk about the subtitles for their sounds? Because it turns out they have different sounds depending on whether or not they have an item. The first one makes sense, when they're looking for an item of the same type as the one they're holding, the subtitles say "Allay seeks". They're seeking out an item that matches what they already have. But the subtitles for when they don't have an item say "Allay yearns". They are longing for something to hold, and I have a theory as to why.
Everyone who's seen both of them has noted the similarities between the Allay and the Vex, and they're always found in the same place, kind of. You can find Allays in cages around Pillager outposts, and technically the Vex aren't there, but the Evokers that summon them participate in raids, so they're obviously in close contact. The other place you can find Allays is in the cells in woodland mansions, where you can find the Vex summoning Evokers naturally.
So what if the Evokers aren't actually summoning them, as we typically think of summoning, but rather conjuring the Vex. What if the Vex are temporarily kept in a pocket dimension until they're needed, at which point they're pulled into the overworld to fight for the evil mages. This would mean that they would have a limited supply of Vex, and would eventually have to restock. So how do they get the Vex? By corrupting the Allay.
It's worth noting that, despite the similarities, there's one huge difference between the two: their substantiallity. Vex can travel through walls, but anyone that's tried to wrangle an Allay into a farm in survival can tell you that they are infuriatingly physical. So how can they be related if there's such a prominent disparity between the two of them? Are the Vex just the ghosts of the Allays? Maybe, but that's not what I think. I think that if the Allay doesn't have something to anchor itself to physicallity, it begins to fade. And as their body fades, so too does their mind. So of course they yearn for something to hold, without it, they effectively fade from existance.
