reading the welcome to night vale novels kinda makes you realize how important cecil is to the town (and, by extension, how important carlos is to the town). i mean, if you think about it, cecil has a lot of power. there aren’t a lot of non-government controlled public news providers in night vale, and, even if even nvpr is controlled to a certain extent, cecil says a LOT of things he probably shouldn’t. like, a Lot. cecil isn’t just a radio broadcaster in a small town, he is the voice of night vale, his program is something everyone listens to on and off throughout the day, and everyone in town seems to know who he is. he has a huge effect on what the public thinks. even the city council, at one point, admitted they didn’t want to harm carlos because whatever cecil would do in retribution just wasn’t worth the grief. cecil, as much of a dork as he seems to be, is an extremely powerful and influential person in night vale, so much so that his words have started revolutions. don’t get me wrong, i stand by my hypothesis that if someone was in line for the copier in front of him and they took like 45 minutes to copy something for no good reason he wouldn’t do anything except sit there impatiently and make vaguely passive aggressive comments, but if he cares about something, then he’s a force to be reckoned with.

Night Vale is a lot of things and it's certainly not perfect politically but I wouldn't say... liberal, exactly

this particular writer also went through great lengths to specify corporatism, corporate capitalism, and like... predatory capitalism (as if there is capitalism that is not predatory)? so idk

anyway this was all the introduction and it was clearly aimed at people who don't know anything about Night Vale which is part of why the mixed up details in places did bug me?

like at least get your facts straight for the crash-course: he was talking about ads and said that there was no evidence of a Home Depot or Joann Fabrics in Night Vale but... the Joann ad is a super funny one in 72 and then on the next page he quoted the part from 19A mentioning Home Depot? and please stop saying NVPR I am going to have some kind of existential crisis

and then just a lot of it was stuff I knew as someone familiar w/ the podcast

there's more stuff and the rest is by other people, though! really looking forward to analysis of Cecil as a character + the subjects of "intimacy, distance, and memory" tbh

Like okay Real Talk: We know there are other shows/hosts on NVPR right? Like, that’s canon.

So. What are they like? How does Cecil interact with them? Do they have coffee together?? Do they all complain amongst each other that Cecil doesn't do his job properly and just spouts nonsense about his private life?? Do they have to share the same booth as Cecil and like, that dude, he never cleans up after himself.

And like - what are the other shows like? Is one of them just, idk, someone talking about idk invisible corn prices?? Someone else screaming into the void? Do the angels have a show? IS THERE A MUSIC STATION? A call in show?

did anybody else notice...

Did anybody else notice all of the NVPR broadcast today, Cecil spent the entire time talking about a new succulent Carlos got him? Like, nobody knows that the city council just passed a law banning purple glow in the dark shoes, but we know about his plant. 

The plant does sound really cute though, he said it had two eyes! Two! And, it’s fur is in the shape of a tail! Like that’s so cute... okay now I understand why he spent the whole broadcast on this. Sorry, I like plants.
